History of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology

Scientists studying diseases of invertebrates in the USA, Europe, and Asia began to meet at international congresses in the 1950s and early 1960s, and soon recognized that they needed both a society and a journal where their common interests could be discussed and their findings presented. Edward A. Steinhaus played a major role in bringing together scientists from across the globe with common interests in these diseases. As a consequence, the Journal of Invertebrate Pathology (then Journal of Insect Pathology) was initiated in 1959 and Steinhaus became its first editor. Along with Albert Sparks he organized a meeting at Seattle, Washington in 1967 that led to the founding of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology with Steinhaus as its first President. The Society held its first meeting at Ohio State University in 1968, and has continued to meet annually. The Society has instituted a Founder's Lecture series, graduate student awards, and Divisions of Microbial Control, Microsporidia, Bacteriology, Fungi, Viruses, and Nematodes. Members enjoy several social functions at meetings as well as symposia, submitted papers, and poster sessions. The Society for Invertebrate Pathology is a truly international organization which to date has held meetings in 13 countries and 14 US states, usually attended by members from at least 20 countries.

The BirdLife International Partner in Ethiopia is the Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society (EWNHS), established in 1966. The aims of the society are mentioned and projects run by the EWNHS, within the framework of the ‘Conservation for Survival’ agenda, are described. These projects include the Important Bird Areas Project, the Environmental Education Support Publications, School's Environmental Education Project, Plant Locally and Nurture Trees project and The Indoor/Outdoors Activities project.     

The French Society of Young Radiation Oncologists: History,goals and perspective

The SFjRO was created ten years ago to promote radiation oncology teaching in France. Our society has now more than 120 members from all around the country. Each year, two national courses are organized where all members are invited.     

The Young Naturalists' Society and Natural History in the Northwest

SYNOPSIS. The beginnings of professional natural history inSeattle date from 1879. In this year a group of young men whowere completely untrained in the sciences formed the Young Naturalists'Society. The society quickly grew to eventually become a majorinstitution for natural history investigations in the PugetSound area at the end of the nineteenth century. The activitiesof the Young Naturalists included collecting a large and impressivecabinet, exchanging specimens with naturalists throughout theUnited States, organizing expeditions for marine investigations,and providing educational opportunities for the public throughlectures, public exhibits, newspaper reports, and summer Chautauqua.As the society became more professional in its work, it developedstrong ties to the University of Washington. In fact, by themid-1890s it was difficult to separate the natural history worksponsored by the University from the studies under the aegisof the Young Naturalists. Eventually the society disbanded andbecame absorbed by the various natural science departments ofthe University and by the Washington State Museum. The importanceof the Young Naturalists' was through its critical role in providingthe foundation for the development of a professional naturalhistory community in Seattle.
