In southern Africa, Aloe marlothii flowers during the dry winter season and offers copious dilute nectar to a variety of birds. Avian abundance and community composition were monitored at an A. marlothii forest at Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, South Africa. Sampling occurred during two summer months (February–March) when no flowers were present, and six months (May–October) that spanned the winter flowering. We hypothesized that an influx of occasional nectarivores to the A. marlothii forest during flowering would lead to significant changes in the avian community. Overall bird abundance increased 2–3 fold at the peak of nectar availability (August). We recorded 38 bird species, of 83 species detected during transects, feeding on A. marlothii nectar; this diverse assemblage of birds belonged to 19 families, including Lybiidae, Coliidae, Pycnonotidae, Sylviidae, Cisticolidae, Muscicapidae, Sturnidae, Ploceidae and Fringillidae. Surprisingly, only two species of sunbird (Nectariniidae) were observed feeding on A. marlothii nectar, and both occurred in low abundance. We predicted that competition for nectar resources would be high, but few aggressive inter- and intra-specific interactions occurred between birds while feeding on inflorescences. During peak flowering, insect feeders (insectivores, omnivores, nectarivores) fed on nectar during the cold morning when insect activity was low, whilst non-insect feeders (frugivores and granivores) fed on nectar in the middle of the day. Our study highlights the importance of A. marlothii nectar as a seasonal food and water source for a diverse assemblage of occasional nectarivores.  相似文献

The western pygmy possum (Cercartetus concinnus) is a small nocturnal marsupial that relies primarily on the nectar and pollen of myrtaceous species at Innes National Park and may occasionally also ingest invertebrates. This study confirmed plant utilization by C. concinnus using scat samples and pollen swabs, and investigated the flowering phenology of dietary plants to determine resource availability. We compared nectar composition between day and night and analyzed nectar sugar production for dietary species. Pollen swabs and scats suggested that C. concinnus relied primarily on the nectar and pollen of Kingscote mallee, Eucalyptus rugosa (76.8% of grains counted in combined scat samples) at Innes National Park, when available; only one of 30 scat samples contained numerous moth scales. The nectars of the species investigated showed marked differences in their composition, but only Melaleuca gibbosa and M. halmaturorum sugar composition changed between day and night. The nectar sugar ratio of E. rugosa differed from those of most other species investigated. C. concinnus may select this plant’s flowers because its nectar is relatively high in hexose sugars. Although E. diversifolia was abundant, its flowers were mostly ignored by possums, perhaps because the nectar in these flowers was proportionately much richer in sucrose than other species’. E. rugosa’s flowering index (calculated from flower load and canopy size) was greatest in December. Six of the seven eucalypt species flowered between November and April; for half of the year pygmy possums must find other resources.  相似文献

Parasitoid adults can directly feed on floral nectar and honeydew containing monosaccharides and disaccharides. Oligosaccharides such as maltose, melezitose and raffinose are also found in honeydew but are rare in floral nectar. The effects of six different sugar resources on the longevity, fecundity and nutrient reserves of Microplitis mediator, a larval endoparasitoid in the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) were determined in our laboratory. The results showed that both food and sex affected longevity of this wasp. Females and males of M. mediator fed with 1 M sucrose solution survived longer than controls fed with water (5.7- and 3.7-fold longer, respectively). When provided with sucrose, glucose or fructose solutions, the parasitoid generated 3.6- to 3.7-fold more offspring than controls, and 60–75% of these progenies were produced during the first 5 days. When separately given fructose, sucrose or glucose, this wasp accumulated fructose and total sugar at the highest level, which means a high sugar levels might lead to prolonging longevity and more offspring in M. mediator. In addition, compared with organisms fed galactose or raffinose, M. mediator fed sucrose or fructose accumulated high glycogen levels. Furthermore, in M. mediator, the lipid content declined with the advancing age. Females showed the slowest lipid metabolic rates when fed with sucrose, glucose, fructose, mannose and galactose solutions versus when fed with raffinose and control. In addition, only sucrose had a significant effect on lipid levels in males nearing the end of life.  相似文献

Labelling parasitoids with trace elements is a potentially powerful technique for studying dispersal and trophic interactions in these usually small insects. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the feasibility and efficiency of different methods for trace element labelling of the hymenopteran parasitoid Cotesia glomerata. We concentrated on Sr as a marker and in some relevant aspects also compared its labelling efficiency to that of Rb, which is the trace element commonly used to label insects. Laboratory-reared wasps had a mean background level of 0.43±0.26 (SD) g g–1 for strontium (Sr) and 0.51±0.25 (SD) g g–1 for rubidium (Rb), which was much lower than that for seven other common trace elements (i.e. B, Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Cu, and Zn). Cotesia glomerata could be effectively labelled with Sr by: (1) feeding adults on sucrose solution spiked with Sr; (2) rearing larvae from Pieris brassicae fed the cabbage plant (Brassica oleracea) soil-drenched with aqueous Sr; or (3) feeding adults on extrafloral nectar from a plant (Vicia faba) soil-drenched with aqueous Sr. Although Sr content in labelled wasps varied with the concentration and the method applied, it did not decline significantly with age. Labelled wasps could be unequivocally distinguished from unlabelled counterparts even 16 days after they were denied access to the Sr-enriched food sources. Labelling with Sr did not seem to have any negative effect on the parasitoid fitness. Thus, Sr is an ideal internal marker to label C. glomerata and other hymenopteran parasitoids for investigations of bi- and tri-trophic interactions.  相似文献

Age-related consumption and longevity were monitored in the laboratory for adultA. ipsilon fed either a 1M sucrose solution or water. An additional group was completely starved. Adults consumed sucrose solution and water just after eclosion; the percentage feeding daily and the mean daily consumption for females and males fed sucrose solution declined with time, whereas the percentage feeding daily and the mean daily consumption of those fed water increased with time. Total consumption was significantly higher for those fed sucrose solution (P<0.01) because they lived longer, but consumption per day averaged over the entire adult stage was not significantly different between those fed sucrose solution and those fed water (P>0.05). Mean longevity was significantly extended for females and males fed sucrose solution over those fed water or starved (P<0.01). Moreover, consumption of either fluid was significantly correlated with extended longevity in all groups (P<0.05). These data on fluid consumption by adultA. ipsilon are discussed relative to posteclosion migratory activities.  相似文献

The mechanisms mediating the use of flowers in the butterfly Heliconius erato phyllis (Nymphalidae) are poorly understood. Availability of nectar and pollen, nectar concentration, and abundance of Stachytarpheta cayennensis and Lantana camara (Verbenaceae), two flower species commonly used by H. erato phyllis in the Neotropics, as well as flower use by this butterfly species in the field were examined in southern Brazil. Under insectary conditions, the preference of H. erato phyllis for different sucrose concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40, and 80%) and the ability to associate sucrose concentrations with preferred and non-preferred flower colors were evaluated through choice tests. Lantana camara inflorescences were less abundant, but contained larger amounts of pollen and nectar than S. cayennensis, and H. erato phyllis utilized the flowers of the former species with higher frequency compared to the latter. In the choice tests, butterflies fed more intensely on 20 and 40% sucrose solutions, an interval in which the nectars of L. camara and S. cayennensis are situated, and were able to associate preferred sucrose concentrations with flower color efficiently within the color spectrum of L. camara flowers (i.e., preferred colors), but not within that of S. cayennensis (non-preferred colors). Thus, the greater use of L. camara flowers by H. erato phyllis is related to the plant’s superior floral rewards and not flower abundance, and to the cognitive abilities of these butterflies to adjust their feeding to the availability of pollen and nectar. To our knowledge, this is the first report showing sucrose preferences in a butterfly species.  相似文献

In conservation biological control, diversification of the agro ecosystem with flowering vegetation is seen as an important tool to support the broad range of predators and parasitoids that require nectar and pollen sources to survive and reproduce. In order to identify flowering plants that provide suitable food sources for natural enemies without supporting the pest species, we analyzed the exploitation of 19 flowering plants by two important lepidopteran cabbage pests, Pieris rapae and Plutella xylostella, and their hymenopteran parasitoids, Cotesia glomerata and Diadegma semiclausum. The experiments were conducted at 90% r.h., while Pieris rapae was tested both at 45% r.h. and at 90% r.h. At 45 ± 5% r.h., corresponding with field conditions at which P. rapae is predominantly active, the butterfly was unable to feed on a number of exposed floral nectar sources whose nectar was successfully exploited at 90% r.h. The broader nectar exploitation by P. rapae at the high humidity is presumably explained by the resulting decrease in nectar viscosity. When comparing D. semiclausum and its herbivorous host P. xylostella, the herbivore exploited a broader range of plants. However, those plants that benefited both the parasitoid and the herbivore had a much stronger effect on the longevity of the parasitoid. The results from the accessibility bioassay suggest that flowers where nectar is not accessible can have a negative impact on insect survival presumably by stimulating foraging without providing accessible nectar. Our results underline the importance of considering species-specific environmental conditions when fine-tuning the choice of nectar sources to be used in conservation biological control programs.  相似文献

The water balance of nectarivores is tightly linked to their energy balance. When nectar is dilute, consumption of a large water excess is inevitable. We investigated energy and water balance in lesser double-collared sunbirds, Nectarinia chalybea (8 g), kept at 20 °C and fed different nectar concentrations (0.4, 0.8 M sucrose or 1.2 M sucrose). The mass of sucrose consumed, body mass, day-time mass gain and night-time mass loss were the same irrespective of diet, the birds compensating energetically for changes in sucrose concentration by drinking greater volumes of the more dilute solutions. Sunbirds consumed between 0.5 times and 1.8 times their body mass in preformed water per day, depending on sucrose concentration, and excreted around 75% of the water. The difference between water gain (preformed and metabolic water) and excreted water is assumed to equal evaporative water loss, and was similar on 1.2 M and 0.8 M sucrose, but was higher on a diet of 0.4 M sucrose. The osmolalities and K+ and Na+ concentrations of the excreted fluid were extremely low, so that sunbird urine resembled that of hummingbirds and freshwater vertebrates rather than that of typical terrestrial vertebrates. N. chalybea is able to maintain energy and water balance over a range of nectar concentrations by adjusting the volume of solution consumed and by excreting copious, dilute fluid. Summary Pink-flowered tubular Penstemon roseus (Plantaginaceae), which has shifted partially to hummingbird pollination, blooms on high-elevation slopes in the mountains in Tlaxcala, Mexico. We studied the interactions between pollinator visitation rates to flowers, pollen removal and deposition, flower size, and nectar removal frequency on seed production in P. roseus. We combine observational and experimental studies in two contrasting natural populations. Our manual pollinations revealed that P. roseus is fully self-compatible. Autonomous self- and manual self-pollinated flowers matured as many seeds as when outcrossed, but outcrossing seems to become better than selfing as the flowering season progressed. Early in the season flowers that were bagged and hand-selfed, hand-outcrossed, or autonomously selfed, or unbagged and naturally pollinated had equal seed set in all four treatments. But later in the season, outcross pollen gave approximately twice as much seed set as the two self-treatments. Low levels of pollen receipt and pollen removal were consistent with the long time elapsed for a given plant to be visited by hummingbirds, which suggests pollen shortage in both sites. Despite differences in pollinator visitation rates to flowers, probability of flower visitation, removal and deposition of pollen, and nectar production rates between populations, we found that total nectar production had no effect on seed production at either site. The daily nectar secretion rate of 0.3–0.65 mg sugar per flower per 1–3 days was low relative to other hummingbird-adapted Penstemon species (typical range: 1.5–5 mg sugar per flower), and it might be intermediate between hummingbird- and bee-adapted Penstemon flowers. Our results support the hypothesis about a shift toward hummingbird pollination, and provide an example of a ‘despecialized’ Penstemon species, which attracts high-energy pollinators (hummingbirds) and profits from outcrossing, but retains bee-syndrome floral traits and low sugar production rates.  相似文献

Abstract. The effect of sugar feeding on the survival of adult phorid fly Pseudacteon tricuspis is investigated. Flies fed 25% sucrose in aqueous solution continuously throughout their lifespan have greater longevity (mean ± SE longevity: female = 7.9 ± 0.8 days, male = 8.9 ± 0.9 days) than completely starved (provided no water and no sugar solution) flies, sugar-starved (provided water only) flies, or flies fed sugar solution only on their first day of adult life. Completely starved flies rarely lived beyond one day. Provision of water increases longevity by 2 days, and one full day of sugar feeding further increases longevity by an additional 1–2 days. Flies fed 50% sucrose have similar survivorship as those fed 25% sucrose. The temporal patterns of nutrient accumulation and utilization are also compared in P. tricuspis fed different diets: sugar-starved, sucrose-fed on the first day of adult life only, and sucrose-fed continuously. Adult P. tricuspis emerge with no gut sugars, and only minimal amounts of body sugars and glycogen. Although the levels of body sugars and glycogen decline gradually in sugar-starved flies, a single day of sugar feeding results in the accumulation of maximum amounts of gut sugars, body sugars and glycogen. High levels of these nutrients are maintained in female and male phorid flies fed on sucrose continuously over the observation period, whereas nutrient levels decline in flies fed only on the first day of life, beginning 1 day postfeeding. Female and male P. tricuspis emerge with an estimated 12.3 ± 2.3 and 7.2 ± 1 g of lipid reserves per fly, respectively. These teneral amounts represent the highest lipid levels detected in adult flies, irrespective of their diet, and are maintained over the life times of sucrose-fed female and male flies, but declined steadily in sugar-starved females. These data suggest that adult P. tricuspis are capable of converting dietary sucrose to body sugars and glycogen, but not lipids.  相似文献

Sex differential nectar production, floral longevity and pollinator foraging were examined in Lobelia cardinalis, a self-compatible, protandrous species that is hummingbird pollinated. The staminate phase of the flowers lasts significantly longer and produces significantly more nectar (total sugar) per day than the pistillate phase of the flowers. Additional pollen is presented throughout the staminate phase. Because inflorescences of L. cardinalis mature acropetally, the nectar reward on any given day is greatest at the top of the inflorescence (where staminate phase flowers are located). Hummingbirds appear to be sensitive to this pattern of nectar presentation as they most commonly began foraging in the middle of an inflorescence and proceeded upward. This foraging pattern tends to promote outcrossing and suggests that staminate phase flowers are visited more often than pistillate phase flowers. We conclude that L. cardinalis emphasizes the male function at anthesis. Others have hypothesized that the features of this species are a logical consequence of intrasexual selection, but further research is needed before we place great confidence in a sexual selection interpretation of our data.  相似文献

We compared the effects of floral nectar from buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum Moench, and honeydew produced by the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphididae), on longevity, nutrient levels, and egg loads of the parasitoid Diadegma insulare Cresson (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Diadegma insulare lived for 2 days in control treatments of water or clean soybean leaves, for 6–7 days with honeydew, and in excess of 2 weeks with buckwheat nectar. Potential reasons for the superiority of buckwheat nectar over soybean aphid honeydew for extending the longevity of parasitoids include: (i) parasitoids ingest more sugars from floral sources, (ii) oligosaccharides in honeydew have a lower nutritional value than nectar sugars, and (iii) honeydew has antagonistic compounds. Overall sugar levels were lower in honeydew‐ vs. nectar‐fed female wasps, suggesting a lower feeding rate, but other explanations cannot be excluded. Diadegma insulare eclosed with high levels of lipids and glycogen, and low levels of gut and storage sugars. All carbohydrates increased over the life of both nectar‐ and honeydew‐fed wasps, but remained low or decreased in starved wasps. Lipid levels declined over the lifespan of female wasps, but females fed floral nectar showed the slowest rate of lipid decline. Diet did not affect egg load, probably because the females were not given hosts in the experiment.  相似文献

Due to their long‐distance migration routes and high longevity, monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are likely to benefit from learning how to discriminate and remember suitable feeding resources. In this study, we assessed monarchs’ abilities to track changing nectar sources over time and to retain learned information presented in two conditioning schedules. Non‐preferred (blue and red) and preferred (yellow) artificial flowers were concomitantly offered to monarchs in a three‐phase experiment. In each phase, flowers of only one color contained sucrose solution, while the others contained water. The rewarding color was changed in each phase. Instantaneous observations were made to assess butterfly visits to each color during each phase; continuous observations over the first 90 min of a new phase allowed us to look in more detail at the transition process. Overall, monarchs tracked sucrose availability, visiting the rewarding flowers more often than the unrewarding ones, regardless of innate preferences. However, butterflies reverted to innate color preferences when the newly rewarding color was different from the initial trained color. In a second experiment, memory decay was compared for butterflies trained according to two schedules: ‘single training’ (sucrose solution in red vs. water in blue artificial flowers in one 15‐min session per day) or ‘intermittent training’ (as above, but in two 7.5‐min sessions per day). Afterwards, butterflies were tested on alternate days for a week in arrays containing unrewarding models of both colors. Following either training schedule, memory persisted for at least 3 d after reinforcement ceased. Our findings reveal that monarchs are able to change their feeding responses according to the flowers’ reward status despite innate preferences, as well as to retain flower information for about half a week regardless of the conditioning dynamics.  相似文献

It has recently been recognized that flowers pollinated by generalist opportunistic nectarivores tend to have different nectar properties to those pollinated by specialist nectarivores (including both hummingbirds and specialist passerines). While renewed interest in specialist avian nectarivore sugar preferences and digestive physiology has helped explain the concentrated sucrose-dominated nectar of plants they feed on, there has been little progress in understanding why generalist or occasional nectar-feeding birds tend to be associated with flowers that have dilute hexose-dominated nectar. We examined sugar preferences and assimilation efficiencies over a range of concentrations, and concentration preferences, in Dark-capped Bulbuls Pycnonotus tricolor, one of the more common occasional avian nectarivores in southern Africa. Dark-capped Bulbuls showed significant preference for hexose sugar solutions, irrespective of concentration, when given a choice between hexose and sucrose solutions in equicaloric pair-wise choice tests conducted at five different concentrations (5–25%). This contrasts with results from specialist nectarivore groups which generally show a significant concentration-dependant switch in preference from hexose at low concentrations to sucrose at high concentrations for equicaloric solutions. In addition, Dark-capped Bulbuls showed an unusual lack of preference for solutions of higher sugar concentration when simultaneously offered four solutions varying in concentration from 10 to 25%. Dark-capped bulbuls also showed a unique effect of concentration on sugar assimilation efficiency, assimilating relatively more energy on 5% diets than on 25% diets. Although able to assimilate sucrose effectively, assimilation rates of hexose sugars were marginally higher. These results shed new light on pollination systems involving occasional nectarivores and, in particular, help to explain the prevalence of low concentration hexose-dominated nectars in flowers pollinated by these birds.  相似文献

1. Field observations in the Swiss Jura mountains showed that males and females of the bivoltine Adonis Blue butterfly Lysandra bellargus Rott. differed significantly in their flower visitation patterns. 2. In both generations, females visited a broader range of available nectar plants than did males. The specific flower visitation patterns of males and females were not affected by the general availability and abundance of potential nectar plant species during both flight periods, indicating high selectivity for nectar plants by both males and females. 3. In addition, the sexes differed in their nectar foraging behaviours: distances between successively visited flowers were significantly longer in males than in females, indicating that male and female butterflies have different foraging strategies. 4. Investigations of nectar characteristics showed that the sexes preferred flowers with different nectar compositions. Males of both generations preferred flowers with high proportions of sucrose and high amounts of total sugar, whereas females preferred flowers with high portions of glucose in their nectar, and, in the spring generation, flowers rich in amino acids. 5. Flowers visited exclusively by males or females in spring differed significantly in their amino acid composition. 6. This clear‐cut pattern did not hold for the autumn generation, most probably due to the limited availability of flowers. 7. The observed nectar foraging patterns underline the importance of adult feeding for longevity and reproduction in butterflies. The findings are particularly relevant for conservation, because L. bellargus is an increasingly threatened species in many European countries.  相似文献

Basidiospore germination in an ectomycorrhizal ammonia fungus Hebeloma vinosophyllum was stimulated by 10–500 mM NH4Cl aqueous solution at pH 4.5–9.0, but not by pure water. The basidiospores germinated at 10°–35°C with an optimum at 25°–30°C. The highest germination percentage (83.0%) was observed in 100 mM NH4Cl aqueous solution adjusted to pH 8.0 by KOH, when the basidiospores were incubated at a density of 106 spores/ml at 30°C for 14 days. The percent germination value decreased with the increased duration of storage under both dry and wet conditions. Humidity and temperature affected the longevity of H. vinosophyllum basidiospores. The basidiospores maintained their germination ability longer under a dry condition than under a wet condition. The greatest longevity was accomplished by storage at 15°C under a dry condition.  相似文献

An account is given of the flower of Echium plantagineum in south-eastern Australia, including stages and timing of flowering, behaviour of raindrops in the flower and aspects of floral microclimate. The concentration of nectar solutes varied with time and site, with means varying from 2 to 62% (as g sucrose/100 g solution). There was a significant negative correlation between nectar solute concentration and ambient relative humidity: the drier the air, the more concentrated the nectar. Rates of nectar secretion per flower varied with the bagging method, with long-term bagging reducing net secretion rates, possibly because of re-absorption. Rates varied with time, day and site, with a temporal pattern of change suggesting a link between rates of photosynthesis and secretion. Maximum nectar secretion rates in short-term bagging experiments were ca. 300 μg sugar/flower/hr (equivalent to > 2 mglflower/24 hr). Secretion rate was correlated with flower density. As flower density increased, secretion rate per flower decreased; rate of sugar production per unit area increased relatively more slowly than flower density. E. plantagineum could produce > 500 mg sugar/m2/day. Honeybees foraged on E. plantagineum only at ambient air temperatures above ca. 17°C unless irradiance exceeded ca. 750 W m-2. Foragers collected nectar or pollen alone, or both, with the type of visit significantly correlated with nectar solute concentration. Below 35% (as g sucrose/100 g solution) most bees took pollen only; above 40%, most took nectar. Mean standing crop of nectar was generally < 100 μg/flower when most bees were taking nectar, but could exceed 1000 μg/flower when bees were absent or foraging mainly for pollen. Honeybees did not always remove all nectar from flowers they probed. Reabsorption of residual nectar may augment the following day's secretion.  相似文献

  • In sexually dimorphic species, hermaphrodite flowers in gynodioecious species or male flowers in dioecious species are often larger and produce more nectar than their conspecific female flowers. As a consequence, hermaphrodite or male flowers frequently receive more pollinator visits.
  • Sex ratio, flower size, floral display, nectar production and floral visits were evaluated in two natural populations of Fuchsia thymifolia, a morphologically gynodioecious but functionally subdioecious insect‐pollinated shrub.
  • Sex ratio did not differ from the expected 1:1 in the two studied populations. As expected, hermaphrodite flowers were larger than female flowers, but in contrast to the general pattern, hermaphrodite flowers did not produce nectar or produced much less than female flowers. Flower visitors were flies (68%) and bumblebees (24%), both of which showed a preference for female flowers. No sex difference was detected in either flower longevity or floral display across the flowering season.
  • Higher nectar production by females may attract more pollinators, and may be a strategy to enhance female reproductive success in this species. Finally, floral dimorphism and insect preferences did not seem to hamper the maintenance of sub‐dioecy or prevent the evolution of dioecy in F. thymifolia.

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine specific sugar ratios (fructose, glucose and sucrose) in nectars of nine families of flowering plants. All nectars contained all three sugars with the exception of that of Asclepias. Asclepias nectar was nearly a pure sucrose solution. Sucrose/hexose ratio was correlated with flower morphology, with tubular flowers having more sucrose and open flowers having more hexose. Open flowers contained nectar whose concentration was more affected by relative humidity than tubular flowers. Available nectar in unbagged flowers was found in volumes of 0.1 to 5 μl (17.5 to 68.2% sugar). Total sugar available per blossom amounted to 0.07 to 3.54 mg. We note that care must be taken in converting % concentration to mg sugar. Energetic yield was not as variable as the other measures and ranged from 0.72 to 3.58 cal/μl. Total daily nectar production was measured in five families and 24-hr sugar production varied from 0.64 to 5.52 mg per flower. Insect nectar feeders frequently searched many blossoms with little or no reward, but were rewarded sufficiently at rare “lucky hit” blossoms which contained relatively large nectar rewards. Insect pollinators did not seek nectars of specific sucrose-hexose ratios, but instead took nectar where caloric reward and accessibility made it most profitable.  相似文献

Effects of elevated CO2 on flowering phenology and nectar production were investigated in Trifolium pratense, Lotus corniculatus, Scabiosa columbaria, Centaurea jacea and Betonica officinalis, which are all important nectar plants for butterflies. In glasshouse experiments, juvenile plants were exposed to ambient (350 μl l−1) and elevated (660 μl l−1) CO2 concentrations for 60–80 days. Elevated CO2 significantly enhanced the development of flower buds in C. jacea. B. officinalis flowered earlier and L. corniculatus produced more flowers under elevated CO2. In contrast, the number of flowers decreased in T. pratense. The amount of nectar per flower was not affected by elevated CO2 in the tested legumes (T. pratense and L. corniculatus), but was significantly reduced (!) in the other forbs. Elevated CO2 did not significantly affect nectar sugar concentration and composition. However, S. columbaria and C. jacea produced significantly less total sugar under elevated CO2. The nectar amino acid concentration remained unaffected in all investigated plant species, whereas the total of amino acids produced per flower was reduced in all non-legumes. In addition, the amino acid composition changed significantly in all investigated species except for C. jacea. The observed effects are unexpected and are a potential threat to flower visitors such as most butterflies which have no alternative food resources to nectar. Changes in nectar production due to elevated CO2 could also have generally detrimental effects on the interactions of flowers and their pollinators.
