Resting Port Jackson sharks Heterodontus portusjacksoni with dorso-lateral pit organs ablated oriented with a mean angle of 263° to the current direction in a flume. This was significantly different ( P <0·01) to controls (normal and sham operated) who had a pooled mean angle of 44° to the current. Thus the dorso-lateral pit organs of H. portusjacksoni , like the free neuromasts of some teleosts, provide sensory information for rheotaxis.  相似文献

Early mortality in the South American fur seal ( Arctocephatus australis ) in Peru is considerably higher than that seen in any other population of fur seal; 31–49% in the first month as opposed to a maximum of 20% in other populations. In 1987 and 1988, pup mortality was found to be enhanced by density-related effects and predation on pups by the southern sea-lion ( Olaria byronia ). At a high density beach, where 60% of the fur seals bred, mortality correlated with the number of females ashore as did aggression. Female aggression was driven to high levels by a combination of high density and movement within the colony to thermoregulate. However, even at a low density, beach mortality remained high due to a high level of predation by male southern sea-lions (low density beach 5·0–8·3% of all pups; high density beach 0·2%). Predation rates were lower at the high density beach because male fur seals expelled most attacking sea-lions during the breeding season (low density beach 10·0% of attacking sea-lions expelled; high density beach 58·8%).  相似文献

The reproductive biology and ecology of the Port Jackson shark Heterodontus portusjacksoni was investigated at three locations on the central and southern coast of New South Wales (NSW), Australia from January 2002 to December 2005 using underwater visual census surveys and samples obtained from a commercial fishery. Adults displayed sexual dimorphism in total length ( L T) at sexual maturity, with males maturing between 762 and 772 mm L T and females between 902 and 905 mm L T. The mean ovarian fecundity was estimated at 16 offspring per female but was unrelated to female L T. Male gonado-somatic ( I G) and hepato-somatic ( I H) indices and female I G declined from July to November as did maximum ovarian follicle diameter and the diameter of the three largest follicles. Adults were absent from inshore reefs between December and July. Hence, H. portusjacksoni has a synchronous annual breeding season in NSW, which occurs between July and November (the austral winter to spring), with a peak in oviposition from August to October. Heterodontus portusjacksoni copulatory and ovipository behaviour are reported for the first time. Copulation was observed and involved oral grasping of the female's pectoral fin by a single male, which wrapped his body around hers to insert one clasper. Ovipositing females appeared to search crevices in the reef prior to delivering a single capsule, which was washed into the crevice by water movement, with the female departing very soon after oviposition. This study represents the first rigorously quantitative analysis of H. portusjacksoni reproductive biology and ecology in NSW waters.  相似文献

The time taken for oxytetracycline to be incorporated as an intense, discrete band was determined by examining vertebrae and dorsal fin spines of Heterodontus portusjacksoni that were injected with oxytetracycline 2–180 days post-treatment. Oxytetracycline was visible in dorsal fin spines 2 days after treatment and 3 days after treatment in sectioned vertebrae. A distinct mark could not be identified in unsectioned vertebrae.  相似文献

A total of 1280 (670 females and 610 males) Squatina guggenheim , an angel shark endemic to the south-west Atlantic, was caught during five research cruises (1995, 1997 and 1998) carried out in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) at depths of 3·5–266 m. All angel sharks captured were sexed and measured. Of the 947 examined for stomach contents, 556 (58·7%) contained food and 391 (41·3%) were empty. Numerically, bony fishes were the principal dietary component (89·7%), followed by crustaceans (4·8%) and molluscs (4·4%). The most important prey species were Engraulis anchoita (58·3%), shrimps (4·4%) and Ilex argentinus (2·3%). Male and female diets were not found to differ significantly ( P  > 0·01), however, the diets of different size classes showed significant differences ( P  ≤ 0·01) (group 1, 23–44, group 2, 45–74 and group 3, 75–91 cm L T). Low rates of cannibalism were observed. The spatial and seasonal variability in the trophodynamics of S. guggenheim is discussed.  相似文献

Among eight populations of grayling Thymallus thymallus that shared common ancestors 8–28 generations earlier, mean egg mortality ranged between 1·2 and 59·8%; mortality during yolk sac absorption was low (0middot;0–8middot;0%) and mean survival to swim-up was high (90–97%), with two exceptions (20% and 50%). Survival probabilities differed significantly among populations, even after statistically adjusting for size at swim-up and water depth, water velocity, gravel size and temperature. Development time from fertilization to first observed swim-up was significantly different among populations, ranging between 27 to 40 days, or 264 to 280 degree-days. Mean specific growth rates during the first external feeding period varied between 1·2 and 2·0% day-1 among populations. Population-specific growth rates were independent of temperature. Rates of divergence were of the same order as in other salmonid studies showing rapid evolution. The phenotypic differences may be due partly to genetic differentiation among the populations.  相似文献

We studied the effects of predation and oviposition activity on reproductive success of a late-season moth, Epirrita autumnata by exposing adult females and eggs to predation in their natural habitat in two successive years. Daily survival rates of adult females ranged from 0.4 to 0.8, average being 0.7. Most predation occurred during nights and was caused by harvestmen and other invertebrate predators. Avian predation did not have an effect on adult survival rates, most likely because of the lateness of E. autumnata flight season. Eggs were also preyed upon by invertebrate predators, although a notable proportion of egg mortality was attributable to causes other than predation. Daily survival rates of eggs were more than 0.99. Using modeling based on empirical data on eclosion of female adults, their oviposition behavior and survival rates of adults and eggs, the daily survival rates were translated into population level consequences. Adult predation was estimated to decrease reproductive success of non-outbreaking E. autumnata by 60–85 percent and egg mortality by 20–40 percent. Predation on adult lepidopterans is a mortality factor potentially as relevant as predation in any other life history stage and thus, should not be ignored in studies of population regulation.  相似文献

The prevalence of Myxobolus dahomeyensis in ovaries of Tilapia zillii was 31·6% and 18·3% in Sarotherodon melanotheron melanotheron . A rapid semi-quantitative ecological risk assessment method (productivity and susceptibility analysis) indicated that, despite its low biological productivity, the Port Jackson shark Heterodontus portusjacksoni is at low risk to all fishing methods in far-eastern Victoria, Australia, under the present fishing practices, because of its low catch susceptibility. The risk to this population, however, would increase if the shark gillnet fishery operating in the region were to retain the species as a by-product. Demographic analysis indicated that the species has medium intrinsic population growth rate and potential rebound in comparison with other chondrichthyan species, juveniles have higher elasticity than mature females and both juvenile and mature females have higher elasticities than hatchlings. Because of its low biological productivity and moderate resilience to the effects of fishing, cautious management measures will be necessary to ensure the sustainable use of H. portusjacksoni if its marketing increases in the future. Information on the dynamics of a population that is valuable to provide management advice can be obtained through demographic methods, but rapid assessment methods can also provide complementary information on the effects of fishing by considering the catch susceptibility of the population to each fishing method.  相似文献

Theoretical models predict that a delayed density-dependent mortality factor with a time lag of ca 9 months is able to drive 3–5-yr population cycles of northern voles. We studied numerical responses of predators in western Finland during 1986–92, in an area with 3-yr population cycles of voles. Abundances of small mammals were monitored in several farmland areas (each 3 km2) by snap-trapping in April, June, August, and October (only in 1986–90), and the abundances of avian, mammalian, and reptilian predators by visual censuses during trapping occasions. The 3-yr cycle studied was a cycle of Microtus voles (field vole M. agrestis and sibling vole M. rossiaemeridionalis ) and their small-sized predators (small mustelids and vole-eating birds of prey). The numerical responses of both migratory avian predators and small mustelids to changes in vole densities were more alike than different. In late summer (August), the time lag in the numerical response of all main predators was short (0–4 months), whereas longer time lags prevailed from spring to early summer. The length of the time lag in spring appeared to be related to the length of the winter, which indicates that strong seasonality may create longer time lags to the numerical response of predators at northern latitudes than at more southern latitudes. Our results suggest that, from spring to early summer, predation by migratory avian predators may act in concordance with mustelid predation to produce the long time lag necessary to drive the 3-yr cycle of voles, whereas almost direct density-dependent predation by all major predators in late summer may dampen spatial variation in prey densities.  相似文献

Behaviour and diet of sea trout post-smolts in a Norwegian fjord system   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In order to study the behaviour of sea trout Salmo trutta L., in the early post-smolt phase, reared smolts were tagged with acoustic transmitters and released in the estuary of the River Aurland (Western Norway) and observed for 31–137·5 h. The study was conducted in May-June 1991 and 1995 on a total of seven tagged smolts. The fish moved back and forth along the littoral zone close to the surface and migrated net distances of 100–8000 m. In 1991 the tagged fish were usually observed in schools averaging 24–55 fish, while the tendency to school was less pronounced in 1995. Post-smolts of wild and reared origin were caught by 25 m long gillnets in the littoral zone. In 1991 the mean distance to shore at capture was 4·3 m and the mean depth 0·6 m, and the corresponding numbers in 1995 were 8·0 and 0·8 m. The distribution of the post-smolts is explained by a general preference for shallow water caused by osmoregulatory problems in high-salinity deep water, together with a preference for the sheltered littoral zone and a strong predation pressure in the open sea from fast swimming pelagic fish predators and gulls Larus sp. Schooling seemed to restrict predation by cod Gadus morhua L., in the littoral zone in 1991, while no cod were observed in this habitat in 1995. In both years the stomach contents of the netted fish consisted mainly of terrestrial insects. Reared fish chose prey items similar to those taken by wild fish, but consumed less food.  相似文献

In an attempt to document the migratory pathways and the environmental conditions encountered by American eels during their oceanic migration to the Sargasso Sea, we tagged eight silver eels with miniature satellite pop-up tags during their migration from the St. Lawrence River in Québec, Canada. Surprisingly, of the seven tags that successfully transmitted archived data, six were ingested by warm-gutted predators, as observed by a sudden increase in water temperature. Gut temperatures were in the range of 20 to 25°C—too cold for marine mammals but within the range of endothermic fish. In order to identify the eel predators, we compared their vertical migratory behavior with those of satellite-tagged porbeagle shark and bluefin tuna, the only endothermic fishes occurring non-marginally in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We accurately distinguished between tuna and shark by using the behavioral criteria generated by comparing the diving behavior of these two species with those of our unknown predators. Depth profile characteristics of most eel predators more closely resembled those of sharks than those of tuna. During the first days following tagging, all eels remained in surface waters and did not exhibit diel vertical migrations. Three eels were eaten at this time. Two eels exhibited inverse diel vertical migrations (at surface during the day) during several days prior to predation. Four eels were eaten during daytime, whereas the two night-predation events occurred at full moon. Although tagging itself may contribute to increasing the eel''s susceptibility to predation, we discuss evidence suggesting that predation of silver-stage American eels by porbeagle sharks may represent a significant source of mortality inside the Gulf of St. Lawrence and raises the possibility that eels may represent a reliable, predictable food resource for porbeagle sharks.  相似文献

Predation can be a major factor in recruitment success of yellow perch ( Perca flavescens Mitchitl). Trawl catches of age-0 yellow perch in western Lake Erie declined from 870·3 per trawling h in June to 3·3 per trawling h in late July 1988. Coincident with the decline in relative abundance of age-0 yellow perch we found large numbers of age-0 yellow perch in the stomachs of small walleyes ( Stizostedion vitreum Mitchill). From this evidence we hypothesized that predation by walleyes may have caused the demise of the 1988 year-class of yellow perch. We used a population and bioenergetics modelling approach to estimate the impact of walleye predation on the abundance of age-0 yellow perch. Modelling showed that 6·8 × 109 age-0 yellow perch that had attained 18 mm total length ( t.l. ), were eaten by small (age-2 and younger) walleye from June through July 1988. We estimated that walleye ate 28·4–89·7% of the yellow perch reaching 18 mm t.l. during 1988. The majority of this predation (77% of total) was by the abundant age-2 cohort of walleyes. We concluded that, even in a large system such as Lake Erie, predation can play a major role in structuring year-class strength of yellow perch and, thus, management of percid fisheries should be conducted on a fish-community basis.  相似文献

Sibling cannibalism among vundu Heterobranchus longifilis larvae started at the age of 4 days, with the prey caught tail-first then swallowed up to the head, which was eventually discarded (type I cannibalism). At 17 days old, this type of cannibalism vanished and was replaced by the ingestion of the whole prey (type II cannibalism), which could only be exerted by predators six times as heavy as their prey. Type II cannibalism consisted of a seemingly opportunistic ambush attack by a formerly passive predator towards a disorientated prey. It required no preliminary aggression or chase, or even contact with the prey, suggesting that the attack was not mediated by the tactile sense, and that cannibalism was independent of aggressive behaviour. When alternative food resources (formulated feed, live tilapia prey) were available, the intensity of cannibalism decreased but pellet-eaters or tilapia predators always achieved lower growth rates than those feeding on conspecifics, suggesting that cannibalism was the most advantageous foraging tactic. Losses to cannibalism among populations of 30-day old juvenile vundu with an initial ratio of 4% of cannibals were as high as 75·5–79·9% over 15 days. Predation peaked during the first days (up to 2·8 prey C−1 day−1), then vanished progressively as surviving prey grew faster than cannibals and escaped their predation. Cannibals preferred consuming the largest prey available with respect to the logistics of cannibalism (body weight ratio of 6·0). This preference for large prey was interpreted both as a foraging tactic aiming to maximize the energetic return, and as foraging strategy enabling the cannibals to exploit their prey as long as possible. The reproductive biology of the Oxleyan pygmy perch Nannoperca oxleyana is described from simultaneous studies of wild populations in north-eastern New South Wales and mature fish held in aquaria. In the wild, 50% of males and females matured at total lengths of 24·0–25·9 and 28·0–29·9 mm, respectively. The species displays sexual dichromatism during the spawning season, with males developing more intense red and brown fin and body colouration, and black pelvic fins. Captive male broodfish displayed territoriality during the breeding season, closely guarding sites within artificial, plant-like substrata in which pairs of fish spawned adhesive eggs. Protracted serial spawning of wild and captive fish occurred from September to April and May at mean water temperatures ≥16·6° C and day length ≥10·7 h. Captive broodfish spawned on an average of 57% of days during the 256 day spawning period. Gonado-somatic indices averaged 0·7% for all ripe males and 4·1–4·2% for all ripe females collected. Mean total and batch fecundities of captive females were 1323 eggs per fish and 7·8 eggs per fish per day, respectively, and relative fecundity was 587 eggs g−1 of body mass. Batch fecundity of wild females was estimated at 7·8 eggs per fish. The adaptive significance of this reproductive strategy in a harsh, variable environment is discussed.  相似文献

A histological analysis of the gonad of the pelagic crystal goby Crystallogobius linearis , from the coastal central area of the Adriatic Sea, showed it to be a truly semelparous species; after the first spawning the mature gonads of both males and females appeared to have lost the capability for further spawning. Mature females had very low fecundity (200–700 mature oocytes) and small egg size (0·2–0·55 mm) similarly to other progenetic species. This reproductive strategy is compared with that of Aphia minuta , and a possible cause for the post-reproductive mortality of the two gobies is suggested and discussed.  相似文献

Cannibalism in walleye pollock off the eastern coast of the Hokkaido Island, Japan was important only during spring (April to June), and its importance increased from 0% in dry mass for <200 mm L S fish to 48·9% for >400 mm L S fish. Most of the prey was represented by age 1 year fish, showing a unimodal body size distribution with a mode at 121–130 mm. Although cannibal body size was larger in deeper (>150 m) water, there was no difference in prey size by depth, suggesting impingement of the predators inhabiting deeper water into the shallow areas to cannibalize 1 year fish. The minimum ratio cannibal: prey size was 1·74. There was a positive but non-significant correlation between the contribution of cannibalism to a potential predator's (>300 mm) diet and an estimate of the previous year's recruitment. This was due to an extremely high contribution of cannibalism during 1992, when a distinctly larger size of predators seemed to bias the contribution. When the 1992 data were removed from the analysis, a significant correlation was obtained ( r 2=0·77, P <0·01), showing that Pollock cannibalism is rather density dependent. Based on the results, it is hypothesized that the'overflow' of 1 year fish from the shelf waters due to their high abundance and the weak stratification in the spring water column results in increased co-occurrence with adult fish and consequent cannibalism.  相似文献

The mortality and stress responses (plasma cortisol concentration) of undersized (total length, L T, <370 mm) pike-perch Sander lucioperca caught as by-catch in a trawl fishery were assessed. The effects of three different holding methods on pike-perch caught by trawl were compared: (1) fish that were transferred to ambient-temperature water (15·0–21·4° C) immediately after capture and not exposed to chilling water, (2) fish held in chilling water for 10 min and (3) fish exposed to chilling water for 2 h. The sample fish were held and monitored in individual plastic restrainers at ambient-water temperature for 48 h after each of the handling procedures. Total mortality was similar for fish held in chilling tanks for 10 min (27·2% total mortality) compared to fish that were only held in ambient-temperature water (28·2% mortality). Total mortality reached 91·3% when fish were held in chilled water for 2 h. Mortality and plasma cortisol concentrations correlated inversely with size (96–368 mm L T) and directly with lake-water temperature (15·0–21·4° C) after treatment. In addition, the effect of chilling was observed in elevated cortisol concentration and delayed start of recovery. The results show that quickly removing (<10 min) undersized pike-perch from chilled water could markedly improve the survival of released fish. Due to delayed recovery, however, fish should be allowed to recover (30–40 min) in a deck tank before release.  相似文献

Early development of Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baeri was divided into two different phases, the prelarval stage between hatching (10·4–11·1 mm LT) and first feeding (19·6–21·0 mm LT), and the larval stage between the initiation of external feeding and metamorphosis (28·6–32·4 mm LT). Morphogenesis and differentiation were more intense during the prelarval than larval and early juvenile stages; the prelarval period was characterized by the replacement of embryonic adaptations and functions by definitive ones, such as branchial respiration, exogenous feeding, and active swimming. The positive allometry of the head for feeding, sensorial and respiratory functions (inflexion point at 20·0 mm LT), and the tail for reducing costs of transport, routine swimming and escape reactions from predators (inflexion point at 20·2 mm LT) confirmed the hypothesis that growth patterns of early life stages closely match specific needs.  相似文献

Northern squawfish Ptychocheilus oregonensis cause significant mortality of juvenile salmon in the lower Columbia River Basin (U.S.A.). The effects of light intensity on this predator-prey interaction were examined with laboratory experiments and modelling studies. In laboratory experiments, the rate of capture of subyearling chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha by northern squawfish was inversely related to light intensity. In a large raceway, about five times more salmon were captured during 4 h periods of relative darkness (0–03 Ix) than during periods with high light intensity (160 Ix). The rate of predation could be manipulated by increasing or decreasing light intensity.
A simulation model was developed for visual predators that encounter, attack, and capture juvenile salmon, whose schooling behaviour was light-sensitive. The model was fitted to laboratory results using a Monte Carlo filtering procedure. Model-predicted predation rate was especially sensitive to the visual range of predators at low light intensity and to predator search speed at high light. Modelling results also suggested that predation by northern squawfish on juvenile salmon may be highest across a narrow window of fight intensity.  相似文献
