Laboratory studies showed that 1st-instarBonnetia comta (Fallén) maggots (planidia) had a significant impact (P<0.05) on mortality of all black cutworm (BCW),Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel), instars, either by killing 1st- and 2nd-instar BCWs 2.3 to 9.7 days after parasitization or by producing a puparium from older host instars. Diet consumption and utilization by BCW larvae parasitized byB. comta as 4th instars were similar to those of nonparasitized larvae until 1 to 2 days before the parasitoid emerged. In a 2-year host exposure study in Iowa, it was found thatB. comta primarily parasitized released BCWs in June through September and did not seem to play a role in controlling the damaging 1st generation of BCW larvae. Techniques were developed to produce and store large numbers ofB. comta planidia.Bonnetia comta deposited large numbers of planidia on filter paper treated with a fecal supernatant. These planidia could be stored on filter paper in a covered Petri dish at 4.4°C for 5 days with minimal mortality. Preliminary field data show that planidia placed around corn seedlings infested with 4th-instar BCW larvae do parasitize the pest and reduce the hosts cutting potential.  相似文献

The mermithid,Hexamermis albicans (Siebold) was recovered from larvae ofLymantria (Porthetria) dispar (L.) collected from various localities in Burgenland, Austria in 1974 and 1975 and from Würzburg, Germany, in 1974. It was recovered also fromStilpnotia salicis (L.) in Austria in 1974. The mermithid was recovered from all field collected larval instars. The majority of the nematodes emerged fromL. dispar larvae collected as second and third larval instars although some nematodes were recorded from larvae collected as first instar larvae still on the egg mass. Peak emergence occurred in the laboratory during the period June 11–17 of both years, but emergence continued at a much lesser degree through the end of larval development. The nematode was found in both high and low host density populations. In 3 localities studied both years, there was a general increase in the percentage parasitism the second year. However, except for one locality in Austria in 1975 where individual samples produced up to 11% parasitism, the overall parasitism increased from 0.4% in 1974 to only 2.5% in 1975.  相似文献

The LT50 ofFarinocystis tribolii Weiser to larvae ofTribolium castaneum (Herbst) increased with the age of the insect indicating that older larvae were relatively more tolerant to the infection though there was 100 % mortality ultimately. The adults were less susceptible than larvae and between sexes, females were more susceptible than males. The number of spores produced increased with the stage of the larvae, but there was no variation in the size of spores in the different instars. The LC50 on 20th and 40th day of inoculation were 1.4×107 and 2.1×106 respectively. Mortality-time due toF. tribolii was shorter at 35 °C than at 25 °C. Sporulation occurred earlier at 35 °C than at 25 °C.  相似文献

The seasonal histories and phenological relationships of European corn borer,Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), and its 2 parasitoids,Macrocentrus grandii (Goidanich) andEriborus terebrans (Gravenhorst) were studied in southcentral Minnesota. Both parasitoids overwintered in mature borer larvae, broke diapause, completed development, and emerged at the same time as did borer adults. Thus the 1st generation parasitoids coincided with the peak abundance of their preferred larval instars of the 1st host generation. Both parasitoids had a 2nd generation, matching the bivoltinism ofO. nubilatis in Minnesota. The activity of 2nd generationE. terebrans was before the peak 2nd generation borer moth flight and was not synchronized with the peak abundance of 2nd generation borer larvae. The peak activity of 2nd generationM. grandii occurred after the peak 2nd generation borer moth flight and was fully synchronized with the peak abundance of 2nd generation borer larvae. Thus,M. grandii has both generations synchronized with the host seasonal history, and was the more effective of the 2 parasitoids.  相似文献

Observations, linear measurements, dissections, and histological preparations were made of parasitized and nonparasitized larvae of the alfalfa weevil,Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), on a daily basis. The observed developmental period lasted from 24 h after oviposition byBathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) orBathyplectes anurus (Thomson) until parasite larvae emerged from their hosts. Adult and larval parasites significantly altered growth and development ofH. postica larvae.B. curculionis andB. anurus caused 24 and 29% greater premature mortality in young host larvae than that observed in the unparasitized controls. Rate of development for parasitized larvae during the 1st 12 days was essentially the same as for nonparasitized larvae. Nonparasitized larvae reached maximum size in 17–18 days, whereas larvae parasitized byB. curculionis andB. anurus required 14–21 and 19–22 days, respectively. Larvae parasitized byB. curculionis are smaller in overall lengths, widths and head capsule widths than nonparasitized larvae and those parasitized byB. anurus.  相似文献

Among more than 50 isolates ofBacillus thuringiensis Berliner (B.t.) tested, 7 incited 100% mortality when 2nd instar larvae ofSpodoptera littoralis Boisduval were fed on alfalfa leaves dipped in a spore-crystal suspension of 108 colony forming units/ml. Among those isolates,B.t. 24 demonstrated the highest activity. Larvae of instars 1 and 2 were the most susceptible toB.t. Susceptibility decreased with larval development. However, larvae of all instars were killed by isolateB.t. 24. Larvae that survived after feeding withB.t. 24 were retarded and fed less. Their weight relative to the controls was lower as the spore concentration on the leaves on which they fed was higher. Survival of the spores in the field dropped drastically to 2% after 4 days. Insecticidal activity of the sprayed suspension on those leaves, however, remained significant.B.t. 24 was also effective against larvae on cotton plants in the greenhouse and in a preliminary field experiment. Numbers of colony forming units recovered from leaves dipped in suspension of various spore concentrations showed significant correlation with the initial concentrations as did sprayed leaves. However, colony forming units recovered from sprayed leaves were 5–7.5 fold lower than from dipped leaves. Dipped cotton leaves showed 3.1×10?5 ml attached to 1 mm2 leaf surface whereas sprayed ones had 6×10?6 ml. Those data are important for the determination of spore concentrations in suspensions required for spraying. The isolateB.t. 24 was serotyped byH. de Barjac as H-6B. thuringiensis entomocidus.  相似文献

The internal parasiteMicroplitis rufiventris Kok. passes through 3 instars but moults 3 times within its host. The last moult occuring just at emergence time. The morphology of the egg and larval stages of the parasite are discussed. At 27°C and a photoperiod of 6 h (6L:18D) the endo-developmental cycle of the parasite can summarize as follows: Egg 18–24 h; instar 1,4 days (fighting phase 48 h; feeding phase 30–48 h); instar 2, 12–18 h and instar 3,3 days. The effect of different photoperiods on the relative speeds of the endo-developmental stages of the parasite at each of 30, 25, 20°C were carefully studied. At the first 2 temperatures, the short photoperiod (6L:18D) accelerated the development of larval instars, while both of 18L:6D or 0L:24D slowed down the development. Under the latter photoperiods some larvae failed to moult and had emergence problems. The influence of photoperiod is significantly noticeable at 20°C. The incubation period of the egg-stage was prolonged significantly at 18L:6D and the development of larval instars was significantly faster and refined at 6L:18D. The factor(s) inhibiting the development of the egg-stage perhaps differ from those affecting the larval development. The ventral area of the host mid-gut among malpighian tubes seems to be where the surplus parasite larvae are eliminated by physical attack. A physiologically suppressed parasite larva is able to attack its developed competitor of the same age. Teratocytes cells perhaps play a part in eliminating the surplus parasite larvae by physiological suppression.  相似文献

The synchrony of the citrus blackfly (CBF)Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby and its parasitoidAmitus hesperidum Silvestri was studied in southern Florida.A. hesperidum adults emerge from 4th instar nymphs 160–300 thermal units after CBF adults. This insured excellent temporal synchronization between the parasitoids and the early CBF instars they prefer since egg to 3rd instar nymph in CBF takes 380 thermal units. AlthoughA. hesperidum parasitized only 29% of the surviving 4th instar CBF, it was the factor responsible for the observed decline in the CBF population level in southern Florida.  相似文献

Lydella thompsoni Hertin,Tachinidae, is an endoparasitoid frequently associated in southern France with larvae ofOstrinia nubilalis, Pyralidae, Sesamia nonagrioides, Noctuidae, Archanara geminipuncta andA. dissoluta, Noctuidae. The tachinid was reared successfully at 21°C in the laboratory by providing the adult flies with a high humidity, a light intensity of 8,000–10,000 lux for mating and a mixture of casein proteolysate and honey as food. Under such conditions, the flies lived for about 30 days and about half of them mated successfully. Hosts were infested by dissecting mature tachinid females and placing 1–2 of the extracted planidia onto each moth larva. Half of the planidia successfully entered their larval hosts. The biology of the tachinid larvae was studied on the 2 main hosts,O. nubilalis andS. nonagrioides. At 21°C, 25°C and 28°C, larval development took less time onO. nubilalis than onS. nonagrioides. At 25°C, female larvae onO. nubilalis required 9.0±0.5 days and onS. nonagrioides 10.5±0.3 days, male larvae onO. nubilalis required 8.3±0.5 days and onS. nonagrioides 10.6±0.3 days. Pupal duration was also influenced by the larval host. In winter, 2nd instar larvae ofL. thompsoni enter a resting or quiescent condition. This condition is terminated sooner (December–January) in larvae developing onS. nonagrioides than in those developing onO. nubilalis (February–March). The life cycle of the tachinid in the field was studied by trapping flies in water dishes and by collecting parasitized host larvae from various plants. Flies were caught from April to October, mainly in September. Larvae of the spring generation of the parasitoid developed on larvae of species ofArchanara that fed on the reed,Phragmites communis. From 1976 to 1982, parasitism averaged about 16%. Parasitism by summer generation onS. nonagrioides was highest (4–5%) in June. Parasitism ofO. nubilalis did not change by more than 2 fold in either of the 2 summers studied (10–17 % in 1981, 6–10 % in 1982). By September the numbers of host larvae had increased to 10–20 times the number available earlier in the season. Larval populations ofL. thompsoni similarly increased from 3–400 larvae per ha in June to 4–5,000 per ha in September. The stability of the relationship between this parasitoid and its hosts in southeastern France is discussed and compared to relationship described elsewhere.  相似文献

Nabis roseipennis Reuter nymphs demonstrated a preference for nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) — infected over healthyAnticarsia gemmatalis Hübner larvae when offered a choice of larval prey in Petri dishes and on soybean. In Petri dishes, small (second-third instar) and large (fifth-sixth instar) nymphs attacked a significantly greater number of diseased than healthy larvae at all larval instars tested (first-fifth instars) and exposure periods (2, 5 and 24 h), except that at 2 h the number of 1st and 3rd instar larvae attacked by large nymphs did not differ significantly (P≤0.05). Nabis roseipennis caged with larvae on individual soybean plants in the greenhouse resulted in a generally low percentage of attack by small and large nymphs after 2 days, ranging from 5.6 to 36.7%. As in the Petri dishes, the nabids showed a significant preference for diseased larvae over healthy larvae attacked for all nabid and larval sizes on soybean, with the percentage of diseased larvae attacked ranging from 28.0 to 65.4% (P≤0.05). This preference for diseased larvae on soybean as well as in Petri dishes demonstrates that the preference was not due to the close proximity in which the host and prey were found in the Petri dishes. The preference for diseased larvae may be due to a reduction in a defensive response in late stages of disease. Studies on deepwater rice in Bangladesh from 1977 to 1980 showed that 61–89% of the egg masses of the yellow rice borer,Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker), were attacked by hymenopterous parasites. Egg parasitism increased from 43–48% in broods 2–4 (May–August) to 64–88% in broods 5–6 (September–November). Parasitism was reduced in broods 4 and 5 in 1979 (because of lower host densities) and in 1980 (possibly due to extreme late flooding). Telenomus rowani (Gahan), active throughout the year, parasitized 64% of the eggs in the masses it attacked, 32 larvae/mass surviving.Tetrastichus schoenobii Ferrière first appearing at medium host densities, increased rapidly to attack half of the brood 5 and 6 masses. More than 98% of the eggs in the attacked masses were parasitized, leaving only 1.6 surviving larvae/mass. In 1979 its appearance was delayed by 10 weeks and fewer masses were parasitized due to lower host densities.Trichogramma japonicum Ashmead andTelenomus sp. (a new record) were less important. Multiple parasitism of masses rose from 7% in brood 2 to 28% in brood 5. Egg parasites clearly reduce the numbers ofS. incertulas, a major pest, and thus probably improve the yields of deepwater rice.  相似文献

The pattern of virulence (based on inclusion bodies) for 3 baculoviruses ofHeliothis, i.e. a unicapsid, nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HzSNPV); a multicapsid, nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HaMNPV); and a granulosis virus (HaGIV) was the same (HzSNPV>HaMNPV>HaGIV) for 3 species ofHeliothis. Based on numbers of nucleocapsids, however, the HaGIV was ca 2X more virulent than the HaMNPV for larvae ofH. virescens, (F.), and the HaMNPV was about 6X more virulent than the HaGIV for larvae ofH. armigera (Hübner). The fastest rate of larval mortality was obtained with HzSNPV. Although the mortality rate for HaGIV was faster than that of HaMNPV forH. virescens andH. armigera, it was slower than that of HaMNPV for larvae ofH. zea (Boddie). The pattern of susceptibility ofHeliothis species to HzSNPV and HaMNPV wasH. zea>H. virescens>H. armigera. Differences in susceptibility of the least susceptible species (H. armigera) and the most susceptible species (H. zea) to HzSNPV was ca. 1.6 X. Larvae ofH. zea, however, were ca. 4 to 6 X more susceptible to HaMNPV than were larvae ofH. virescens orH. armigera. A different pattern of susceptibility was recorded for HaGIV when larvae were challenged with HzSNPV and HaMNPV. Larvae ofH. virescens were ca. 20 and 35 X more susceptible to HaGIV than were larvae ofH. zea andH. armigera, respectively.  相似文献

The lepidopteran insect pests have significant importance in vegetable production. The present study was performed to investigate the baseline studies about the assessment of feeding and consumption potential, utilization indices and losses promises of leafworm, Spodoptera litura (Fab.) on Okra. The data regarding feeding potential, food utilization and consumption indices as well as losses of different larval instars were recorded and subjected to appropriate statistical analysis. The results showed that, in the beginning, the approximate digestibility of various instars was increase, e.g. third instar (51.36%–64.03%), fourth instar (63.42%–69.45%) and fifth instar (70.25%–76.10%). However, after a certain period, the digestibility was decreased and efficiency to convert the ingested food into biomass varied significantly. The consumption index values increased with an increase in time but the consumption and growth rate was declined of fourth instar larvae. The ingestion and digestion increased of third (10.01–13.06, 8.32–11.91 mg), fourth (11.27–17.28, 10.96–14.03 mg) and fifth (12.60–19.40, 11.93–15.28 mg) larval instars. The corrected weight of consumed leaves increased with a gain in body weight. However, in the third instar, a decline was observed on the last day of feeding. Maximum leaf area was consumed by fifth instar larvae (44.66 cm2) followed by fourth (35.41 cm2) and third (27.98 cm2) instars. In conclusion, all the dependent parameters, including food utilization potential, consumption indices and losses were higher for fifth instar larvae than others. These results emphasized the re-establishment of fundamental (economic threshold level: ETL, economic injury level: EIL) integrated pest management concepts.  相似文献

Macrorhaphis acuta were bred in the laboratory (25°C) and fed on larvae ofAscotis selenaria reciprocaria. The incubation period was 8.4 days and the mean hatch was 94.4%. There were 5 nymphal instars which occupied 3.3, 5.0, 5.6, 6.6 and 12.0 days, respectively, from the lst to the 5th. Each nymph consumed an average of 22.8 host larvae to complete development. Adults had a mean longevity of 74.9 days and each consumed an average of 67.5 host larvae. Significant reduction was noted in pupation of 5th instar host larvae sucked by adult predators for periods ranging from 4 to 10 mn. The food requirements of 3rd, 4th, and 5th instar nymphs fed on 3rd instar host larvae were also investigated. The conversion ratio varied with the weight of food consumed during the instar and later instars were more efficient than earlier ones. Predatory value did not vary significantly with successive instars.  相似文献

Aleurothrixus floccosus (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) first invaded eastern urban areas of Athens, Greece, in May 1991. At Zographou, Athens, in 1992–1994, most overwinteringA. floccosus nymphs were of the 3rd and 4th instars, and pupae; during other periods of the year, all developmental instars were found, at fluctuating rates. In 1993, peaks in the numbers of eggs laid coinciding with sharp increases in percentage of 1st instar nymphs found permitted the distinction of 6 overlapping generations. High densities ofA. floccosus infesting citrus in autumn 1992, in the range of 9.1–10.9 nymphs/cm2 leaf surface, were brought under control by autumn 1993, with maximum densities of 1.1–1.7 nymphs/cm2. This reduction is attributed mostly to the action of the introduced parasitoidCales noacki (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), released 3 km from Zographou in 1992 and at Zographou itself in 1993. No indigenous parasitoid was ever found parasitizingA. floccosus. The first record ofClitostethus arcuatus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Greece is reported. In summer 1992, eggs larvae and adults ofC. arcuatus were noticed on citrus leaves infested withA. floccosus at Zographou. From 1992 to 1994, the adults were often detected in field samplings and on yellow sticky traps. C. arcuatus adults and larvae were successfully reared, under optimal laboratory conditions, on eggs and early-instar nymphs ofA. floccosus and on eggs ofAnagasta kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), but the adults did not reproduce.  相似文献

Rates of respiration and growth were measured for larvae of the spider crab Hyas araneus L., reared in the laboratory from hatching to metamorphosis. The moulting cycle was simultaneously monitored. In both zoeal instars individual respiration rate (R) increased as a linear function of time (t) of development, whereas growth, measured as dry weight (W), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), and energy content (E, calculated from C) followed a power function of t. Weight-specific respiration rate (QO2) was in all instars maximum in early postmoult, and minimum in intermoult and early premoult. Zoea II and megalopa instars showed another conspicuous QO2 increase during late premoult. Respiration (both R and QO2)and growth of the megalopa could be described by non-linear (quadratic) functions of t. R and QO2 during this larval stage were not correlated with W, but were controlled by events of the moulting cycle: R followed a similar pattern to QO2 (minimum values in intermoult), whereas biomass of the megalopa changed conversely, with a maximum in intermoult and early premoult. The respiratory coefficient (i.e. the ratio of metabolic energy loss: energy gain by body growth) was far lower (<0.8) in the zoeal instars than in the megalopa (>5), suggesting a strongly reduced capability of energy conversion in the final larval stage of H. araneus.  相似文献

Consumption of larvae and females ofAphis craccivora Koch by 1st and 4th larvae and adults ofCheilomenes vicina (Muls.) was studied under fluctuating temperature (24–30°C). The early aphid instars were consumed in significantly greater numbers than later instars and females. The feeding rates ofC. vicina were significantly positively correlated with the population density of prey. The number of prey consumed daily by each predator stage tested, increased more steeply at lower than at higher prey densities, exhibiting thus the type 2 functional response

The mode of infection and cycle of development ofTolypocladium cylindrosporum Gams was examined inAedes sierrensis andCulex tarsalis. Larvae were found to be infected through the external cuticle, the pharynx and the midgut. Blastospores and conidia were both infective although for equal numerical concentrations blastospores proved more virulent causing high mortality within the first 48 h after inoculation (80 % for L2 larvae exposed to 5×105 spores/ml), while conidia generally took 7–10 days to produce the same results. Sporulation did not occur on submerged cadavers. Conidia were produced only on floating cadavers in contact with air. Conidial production on floating 4th instar larvae was found to average 1.8×107 conidia/larva. Invasion of the haemocoele and fairly extensive growth of the fungus almost invariably occurred before larvae were killed. This was particularly true forAedes sierrensis larvae. Details are presented of growth within the host and post-mortem penetration of the fungus out of the cadaver. AdultA. sierrensis sprayed with a conidial suspension proved susceptible to infection with 100 % mortality being recorded at 10 days. Infections originated in the thorax, suggesting, the integument or possibly the thoracic spiracles to be the most probable site of infection.  相似文献

Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, carbaryl, carbofuran, and infection withNosema pyrausta (Paillot) acted independently in reducing stalk damage by larvalOstrinia nubilalis (Hübner). There were significant interactions of insecticide X days after application for the number and weight of 1st-generation larvae. There also were significant inter-actions of disease class X days after application of insecticide for: larvae/plant in the 2nd generation, weights of larvae in the 1st generation, percentageNosema-infected larvae and intensity of infection of larvae in both generations.  相似文献
