There has been much taxonomic confusion over the identification of Prosopis species, especially where introduced. Prosopis juliflora is the most widespread species in the arid and semi-arid tropics, although it has been confused with other species, particularly the closely related Prosopis pallida. In this study, RAPDs markers were used for the first time to distinguish between these species. Eighteen primers were used in amplification reactions, which yielded an average of 120 bands per accession. A dendrogram showing genetic similarities among accessions was constructed using UPGMA cluster analysis and the Nei and Li similarity coefficient. The genetic similarity observed between P. juliflora and P. pallida is similar to the value in sympatric Prosopis species in North America, and reconsideration of the series rank in section Algarobia is suggested. Species-specific markers confirmed that material in Burkina Faso is P. juliflora, but suggested that material collected in Brazil, Cape Verde and Senegal is P. pallida, whereas this has previously been identified as P. juliflora.  相似文献

Prosopis chilensis and Prosopis flexuosa (Fabaceae) are closely related hardwood arboreal species that are widely distributed in the arid regions of Argentina. The development of highly polymorphic markers, such as microsatellites, is desirable for genetic studies of these species. Here, we present the development and characterization of six polymorphic microsatellite markers in P. chilensis and P. flexuosa. These markers showed a polymorphism information content between 0.14 and 0.85 and the number of alleles varied from two to 13 considering both species. All markers revealed a broad cross‐species affinity when tested in seven other Prosopis species. All primers amplified in at least five species.  相似文献

The genus Prosopis (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae), comprises 44 species widely distributed in arid and semi-arid zones. Prosopis pallida (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) Kunth and P. juliflora (Sw.) DC. are the two species that are truly tropical apart from P. africana, which is native to tropical Africa (Pasiecznik et al. 2004), and they have been introduced widely beyond their native ranges. However, taxonomic confusion within the genus has hampered exploitation and better management of the species. The present study focusses primarily on evaluating the genetic relationship between Prosopis species from the section Algarobia, containing most species of economic importance, though P. tamarugo from section Strombocarpa is also included for comparison. In total, 12 Prosopis species and a putative P. pallida × P. chilensis hybrid were assessed for their genetic relationships based on RAPD markers and microsatellite transferability. The results show that P. pallida and P. juliflora are not closely related despite some morphological similarity. Evidence also agrees with previous studies which suggest that the grouping of series in section Algarobia is artificial.  相似文献

While climatic extremes are predicted to increase with global warming, we know little about the effect of climatic variability on biome distribution. Here, we show that rainy El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events can enhance tree recruitment in the arid and semiarid ecosystems of north‐central Chile and northwest Peru. Tree‐ring studies in natural populations revealed that rainy El Niño episodes have triggered forest regeneration in Peru. Field experiments indicate that tree seedling recruitment in Chile is much less successful than in Peru due mostly to larger mortality caused by herbivores. The dramatic impact of herbivores in Chile was derived from the combined result of slower plant growth and the presence of exotic herbivores (European rabbits and hares). The interplay of herbivory and climatic effects we demonstrated implies that rainy ENSO events may represent ‘windows of opportunity’ for forest recovery if herbivore pressure is minimized at the right moment.  相似文献

This study provides information about the diet across geographic areas and throughout ontogeny and sex of two coastal and commercial batoid species in Peru (Chilean eagle ray Myliobatis chilensis and Pacific guitarfish Pseudobatos planiceps). Data was collected in the central coast (13°30′S to 14°30′S; Pisco district, Lima) and in the northern coast (13°12′S to 13°49′S; San Jose district, Lambayeque) off Peru during the second semester of the years 2015 and 2016 (i.e., winter and spring) in an El Niño event. A total of 357 stomach contents were analyzed in northern and central Peru with different oceanographic and ecological conditions. In the central coast, M. chilensis showed a high trophic position (tertiary consumer) due to its high consumption of Peruvian anchoveta (Engraulis ringens), while P. planiceps had a lower trophic position (secondary consumer) and a less specialized diet of benthic invertebrates (i.e., crustaceans and mollusks) and pelagic fish (e.g., E. ringens). In the northern coast, both species preyed mainly upon benthic invertebrates and to a lesser degree on fish; therefore, their trophic position was lower. Dietary variation was influenced by species, geographic location, and ontogeny. The diet variability between geographic locations shows insights of these batoids’ trophic plasticity and opportunistic feeding behavior in response to differences in the local prey availability, an effect that may be amplified during the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The spatial variation in this species diet may indicate that they play different ecological roles in distinct environments. This study contributes to the scarce literature about batoids’ ecology in the southeast Pacific Ocean and presents novel information on habitat-specific diet composition.

Fritz, U., Alcalde, L., Vargas‐Ramírez, M., Goode, E.V., Fabius‐Turoblin, D.U. & Praschag, P. (2012). Northern genetic richness and southern purity, but just one species in the Chelonoidis chilensis complex. —Zoologica Scripta, 41, 220–232. The Chelonoidis chilensis complex, the sister group of the famous Galápagos tortoises, is a widely distributed group of South American land tortoises, ranging from the dry Chaco of Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina to northern Patagonia. Within this complex, up to three distinct species have been recognized. Using sequence data of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and length polymorphisms of 10 microsatellite loci, we investigate genetic differentiation among all three nominal species. We find only negligible differentiation, with decreasing genetic diversity from north to south. We conclude that only one species, Chelonoidis chilensis (Gray, 1870), is valid, with C. donosobarrosi ( Freiberg, 1973 ) and C. petersi ( Freiberg, 1973 ) as its junior synonyms. Morphological variation within C. chilensis sensu lato is in accord with the observation that size variation in chelonians follows Bergmann’s rule, with body size increasing with latitude. The observed phylogeographic differentiation inverses the well‐known pattern of southern genetic richness and northern purity from the northern hemisphere, resulting from dispersal from glacial refugia. This implies that in higher latitudes of both hemispheres genetic diversity may decrease with increasing distance from the refugium. For C. chilensis sensu lato, it seems likely that long‐distance dispersal via rafting on the Desaguadero River led to the foundation of the southernmost populations in northern Patagonia during the Holocene.  相似文献

1. At the higher taxonomic levels Psylloidea have largely co‐evolved with their host plants, and the colonisations of new plant lineages have been relatively few. The mechanisms that have constrained the evolution of host relationships throughout the history of this superfamily are not understood. The host relationships of Prosopidopsylla flava were studied in order to identify possible genetic or ecological constraints to macroevolutionary change in host range, using methodology developed for the host specificity testing of potential biological control agents. 2. The five Prosopis taxa (Leguminosae) tested appeared to be indistinguishable as hosts. Adult feeding required for survival, and for the initiation and continuation of egg production, was specific to Prosopis species. Oviposition occurred on 57 of the 58 non‐Prosopis plant species tested within the Leguminosae and Rosaceae, and was highest on plant species that belonged to the same subfamily. Eggs were inserted into plant tissue by their peduncle but hatched independently of host species. Complete development was restricted to Prosopis, although some early nymphal development was observed on species within the same subfamily as Prosopis (Mimosoideae). 3. Multiple phylogenetic constraints restrict host selection and utilisation by P. flava to Prosopis species, implying a long association between insect and host. Specificity of adult feeding was of special significance, being required for survival, oogenesis, and probably indirectly determining the oviposition host. This supports the hypothesis that genetically set limits in particular aspects of life history are responsible for the inability of some psyllids to readily colonise new plant lineages, rather than stabilising selection.  相似文献

In the last two decades, several researchers have noted rodent population outbreaks in semiarid South America, in association with unusually high precipitation that seemingly concurs with El Niño events. To date, no studies have been conducted to determine the statistical relationships between ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) events, increased precipitation, and rodent irruptions. Here we show that: 1) there is a statistical association between ENSO events and inereased precipitation in the semiarid region of northern Chile: 2) the occurrence of rodent outbreaks in that region is statistically related with the precipitation levels of the same year: 3) the multi-annual patterns of the total annual precipitation levels and population abundance of those rodents during the summer are positively associated. The putative chain of effects seems to start with unusually high rainfall brought by ENSO to semiarid environments, which thus respond with inereased primary productivity (herbage and seeds), which then fuels the rodent outbreaks.  相似文献

Ephemeral rivers and the vegetation they support have numerous ecological and economic values to the mammals and people who rely on these systems. Yet, these crucial environments are believed to be threatened by exotic plant invasion. In Africa, invasive trees of the genus Prosopis have detrimental effects on native vegetation, bird and dung beetle communities; however, to date, there is no evidence that Prosopis establishment has affected indigenous wild mammalian distribution and ecology in its introduced range. Using a combination of camera traps and vegetation surveys, we tested the hypothesis that Prosopis invasion has a negative impact on the mammals of the ephemeral Swakop River in Namibia by reducing mammal species richness and species occupancies. Prosopis was found to have no negative impact on species richness; however, evidence for species‐specific responses to Prosopis abundance was found. This is the first study to confirm an impact of Prosopis on sub‐Saharan African mammals, providing a foundation for future research and the development of appropriate management policy.  相似文献

Polylepis tarapacana is the highest-elevation tree species worldwide growing between 4000 and 5000 m a.s.l. along the South American Altiplano. P. tarapacana is adapted to live in harsh conditions and has been widely used for drought and precipitation tree-ring based reconstructions. Here, we present a 400-year tree-ring width (TRW) chronology located in southern Peru (17ºS; 69ºW) at the northernmost limit of P. tarapacana tree species distribution. The objectives of this study are to assess tree growth sensitivity of a northern P. tarapacana population to (1) precipitation, temperature and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability; (2) to compare its growth variability and ENSO sensitivity with southern P. tarapacana forests. Our results showed that this TRW record is highly sensitive to the prior summer season (Nov-Jan) precipitation (i.e. positive correlation) when the South American Summer Monsoon (SASM) reaches its maximum intensity in this region. We also found a positive relationship with current year temperature that suggests that radial growth may be enhanced by warm, less cloudy, conditions during the year of formation. A strong positive relationship was found between el Niño 3.4 and tree growth variability during the current growing season, but negative during the previous growth period. Growth variability in our northern study site was in agreement with other populations that represent almost the full range of P. tarapacana latitudinal distribution (~ 18ºS to 23ºS). Towards the south of the P. tarapacana TRW network there was a decrease in the strength of the agreement of growth variability with our site, with the exception of higher correlation with the two southeastern sites. Similarly, the TRW chronologies recorded higher sensitivity to ENSO influences in the north and southeastern locations, which are wetter, than the drier southwestern sites . These patterns hold for the entire period, as well as for periods of high and low ENSO activity. Overall, P. tarapacana tree growth at the north of its distribution is mostly influenced by prior year moisture availability and current year temperature that are linked to large-scale climate patterns such as the SASM and ENSO, respectively.  相似文献

Experimental infection of Prosopis species with the mistletoe Phoradendron tomeniosum subsp. tomentosum in a uniform garden demonstrated that differences in infection success between species, populations, and individuals can be caused by genetically-based differences in both hosts and parasites. Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa was least resistant to infection; P. laevigata was more resistant; and P. torreyana was most resistant. A population of P. glandulosa var. glandulosa grown from seeds collected in the lower Rio Grande valley was significantly more resistant to infection than three populations of the same variety from central and northern Texas. The higher resistance of the Rio Grande valley population appears to be due to introgression with P. laevigata. The experimental population of Phoradendron tomentosum subsp. tomentosum from northeastern Mexico and the population of the same subspecies from southern Texas had greater infectivity than did those from central and northern Texas, corresponding to the greater resistance of the southern Prosopis populations.  相似文献

The marine otter (Lontra felina) inhabits patches of rocky coastline from central Peru to southern Chile and is classified as Endangered by the IUCN. Given the limited information available about the species, we set out to assess marine otter diet with a view to detecting latitudinal differences, and to assess marine otter activity budgets and interspecific interactions (including anthropogenic) at Peruvian fishing villages and to compare results with similar Chilean studies. Nine study sites from central Chile to southern Peru were sampled for otter spraints to assess relative frequency of prey types and two fishing ports in southern Peru were monitored through focal and scan observations to assess activity patterns, interspecific interactions, habitat use patterns, and dive durations. Results indicate that toward the northern part of its range, crustaceans become less important and fish more important in the diet. Interactions were observed between marine otters and other species, including stray dogs and cats. The strong dependence of marine otters on the availability of safe rocky shelters, and the species’ apparent tolerance to living alongside humans raise conservation concerns about vulnerability to anthropogenic threats. These factors, if not correctly managed, could turn some of these rocky seashore patches into population sinks.  相似文献

The genus Prosopis contains many valuable, long-lived, multi-purpose legume trees, some of which are also invasive species. The time of first flowering is important for increasing production of sweet, protein-rich pods in plantations, especially under short rotations, and affects the rate of spread as a weed. Trees generally begin flowering at 3–5 years of age. However, seedlings from a small seedlot collected from an introduced population in southern Mauritania were observed to begin flowering at 3–4 months after germination. This is unknown in the native range of any Prosopis species, and appears to represent a major evolutionary event triggered after naturalization. This paper reports a detailed investigation with seed collected from Aleg, Brakna region, Mauritania, in 1998 (Prosopis sp. ‘Aleg’). Two experiments were established, in glasshouses at Cirad, Montpellier, France, and Coventry University, UK. Flowering began at the two sites 104 and 169 days after sowing, respectively, and 97.5% of plants had flowered at Coventry after 306 days. Flowers produced abundant pollen with 50–60% viability indicated by FDA staining and 40–50% germination on an artificial medium. No pods were formed. All plants analysed were diploid. Morphologically, these juvenile plants were similar to American species of section Algarobia, and exhibited leaf characters typical of P. pallida. However, due to the large variation in morphology within this section of the genus, further studies are required to confirm the actual species. This is the first record of precocious flowering in Prosopis, and has been found only in a single, introduced population. Implications for genetic improvement of tropical Prosopis, and particularly the spread of these species as invasive weeds, are discussed. Such a life history shift in the increased reproductive ability of a species following introduction, with potentially significant environmental effects, may not be restricted to Prosopis and merits further detailed investigation.  相似文献

The problems of delimitation of species of Prosopis originate from the few morphological discontinuities which exist among some of them; some, however, originated as a result of wide distribution of germplasm without proper knowledge of the species, in particular, much material catalogued as P. juliflora, but being of other species, was distributed for reforestation projects worldwide. This work tests the morphological results obtained for P. pallida and P. limensis of the Peruvian–Ecuadorian coast and for P. juliflora of the Caribbean Basin of Colombia and Venezuela utilizing a study of AFLPs and a study of the morphology of plantlets developed in a conventional garden study. The phenogram obtained for the AFLPs demonstrates each of the three species to be a well differentiated cluster and the molecular variance between them is significantly greater than the variance within each species. Study of the plantlets also indicates statistically significant differences for four morphological characters between P. juliflora and the other two species (P. pallida and P. limensis). These results, in addition to the morphological differentiation evident between adult plants of P. pallida and P. limensis and the clear separation of these two species from P. juliflora, corroborate the genetic identity of the three taxa analyzed.  相似文献

The host specificity, infection process and effectiveness of nodules produced by several African sinorhizobial strains on different Acacia and Prosopis species (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae) were studied. Sinorhizobium arboris strain HAMBI 1552T, S. kostiense strains HAMBI 1489T and HAMBI 1493, S. saheli strain HAMBI 1496 and S. terangae bv. acaciae strain ORS 1058 induced nitrogen fixing nodules on seedlings of the following African or Latin American species (marked with *): A. angustissima * , A. mellifera, A. nilotica, A. oerfota (synonym A. nubica), A. senegal, A. seyal, A. sieberiana, A. tortilis subsp. raddiana, P. chilensis * , P. cineraria, P. juliflora and P. pallida * . All strains increased plant yield significantly compared with uninoculated seedlings watered with nitrogen-free medium, but none appeared to be superior. The sinorhizobial strains were unable to effectively nodulate Sesbania rostrata (Papilionoideae). All roots had hairs, but particularly in the case of Acacia spp. they were often sparse. After inoculation root hairs were deformed and, in general, infection in Acacia spp. occurred through short root hairs and in Prosopis spp. through longer ones. After entry, the rhizobia filled infection pockets in the root hair, which later expanded into sac-like structures. When infection threads occurred, they usually started from sac-like structures. Elongation and ramification of the nodules indicated that Acacia spp. and Prosopis spp. have indeterminate nodules. A persistent apical meristem, which is the characteristic feature of the indeterminate nodule type, was much clearer in Prosopis spp. than in Acacia spp. Sinorhizobial strains formed tumour-like structures with undifferentiated cell tissue on the Australian acacia A. holosericea and ineffective, nodule-like structures on the African P. africana.  相似文献

Abstract. Facilitation of the establishment of certain plant species by nurse plants is a common phenomenon in arid and semiarid ecosystems. The most commonly reported mechanisms of facilitation include cooler temperatures and increased soil nutrients beneath the nurse plant canopy, which favor establishment of other plant species. During conversion of upland grasslands to thorn woodland in southern Texas, Prosopis glandulosa appears to facilitate establishment of other woody plants, including Celtis pallida, whereas Acacia smallii occurs only in habitats between P. glandulosa canopies. We tested the hypothesis that light intensity and soils under P. glandulosa canopies facilitate seedling emergence and growth of C. pallida but inhibit seedling emergence and growth of A. smallii. In the field, C. pallida and A. smallii seeds were planted under P. glandulosa canopies and in adjacent interspaces. Percent emergence of C. pallida seedlings was greater under the canopy of P. glandulosa, whereas percent emergence of A. smallii seedlings was greater in interspaces. In a greenhouse experiment, seeds of each species were planted in pots filled with soil from under P. glandulosa canopies or from adjacent interspaces. Two treatments, shade and sunlight, were imposed and plants harvested seven weeks later. Seedling mass of both species was greater in canopy soil than in interspace soil in sunlight but mass of the two species did not differ between soil sources in shade. Canopy soils contained more total and available nitrogen than interspace soils. These results suggest that light is more limiting than nutrients under shaded conditions and so neither species can take advantage of the high nutrients beneath P. glandulosa. Shade and greater soil nutrients beneath P. glandulosa do not appear to be the major factors that facilitate C. pallida or inhibit A. smallii. Aggregation of C. pallida beneath P. glandulosa canopies appears to be a complex process that involves both passive facilitation (seed dispersal by birds) and active facilitation (reduction of seed dormancy by under-canopy temperatures) operating only during the seed germination stage with successional mechanisms other than facilitation operating during later stages of shrub establishment and growth.  相似文献

Tree species from Prosopis genus were widely planted for rehabilitation of degraded drylands of Kenya. However, they have invaded riverine ecosystems where they cause negative socio‐economic and ecological impacts. GIS was used to estimate the reverine area threatened by Prosopis invasion in Kenya. Landsat satellite images, field surveys and past studies were also used to assess the resulting potential ecological impacts in the Turkwel ecosystem in Kenya. The study revealed that 3.0 to 27.7 million hectares are threatened by invasion, based on documented riverine forests width of 0.5–3 km. Image analysis showed that 34% of the sites under positive change were invaded, with most invasions occurring in natural forests and abandoned farms. Prosopis had overall occurrence of 39% in all the sampled sites in 2007, in contrast to 0% in 1990 that was reported in an earlier study. In these areas, Acacia tortilis occurrence dropped from 81% in 1990 to 43% in 2007, suggesting that Prosopis could be displacing it. Utilization of Prosopis for fodder, fuel wood and pods for animal feeds is recommended as a management tool to reverse the trend. The methods used in this study are also recommended for invasion prediction and management in other similar ecosystems.  相似文献

Prosopis spp. areintroduced rangeland weeds in Australia. In asearch for biological control agents, thepsyllid Heteropsylla texana, which causessevere distortion to growing leaf and floralshoots, was imported from Texas, USA forhost range testing in quarantine facilities.No-choice tests were conducted on 60 plantspecies including P. pallida, P. velutinaand P. juliflora. In these trials, adultssurvived on 45 non-target plants but ovipositedonly on the Prosopis spp., Dichrostachys spicata and Acaciabidwillii. Nymphs developed to ovipositingadults on all Prosopis spp. and both D. spicata and A. bidwillii. Developmentof small numbers of adults on D. spicataand A. bidwillii occurred for only onegeneration. Damage was noticed only on Prosopis spp. In multiple-choice trials usingthree plant species, oviposition and subsequentdevelopment of eggs and nymphs to adults tookplace on P. pallida and D. spicatabut not on A. bidwillii. The low numbersdeveloping, the longer development times toadults when reared on D. spicata and A.bidwillii, and the failure of these plantsto sustain populations beyond one generationindicate that these plants are not hosts ofH. texana. While adult survival on manytest plants may imply that adult feedingoccurred, the risk to populations of theseplants in the field is negligible. It wasconcluded that H. texana is specific toProsopis spp. and could be released inAustralia for control of Prosopis spp.Observations of the biology of this speciesmade during the course of rearing andexperimentation indicated that nymphs developedthrough five instars to adults in 7–8 days sothat total development from egg to adult takes13–17 days. Females produce up to 100 eggs.  相似文献

A study of the Pinguipes chilensis Valenciennes 1833 diet was carried out on 414 specimens captured on the Talcahuano, Chile coastline (36°41′S; 73°06′E) between October 1998 and March 2000. P. chilensis, endemic to the southeast Pacific (from Tumbes, Peru to Magallanes, Chile), is confirmed as a general predator over a wide trophic spectrum including 61 taxa. Crustaceans (mostly mysids, but also a wide variety of decapods) made up the principal dietary component, followed by fish and annelids. Prey belonging to Mollusca, Ophiuroidea, Echinoidea, Rhynchocoela, Sipunculida, Echiura and Urochordata were also present. There were no significant differences between male and female diets, although they shared only 32 prey. A significant dietary difference was found, however, between analysed size groups: specimens under 30 cm total length (TL) preyed mainly on the amphipod, Ampelisca araucana; those over 30 cm TL preyed on the mysid, Neomysis sp.; and those over 40 cm TL on fish, annelids, molluscs and echinoderms. Seasonal differences, due in large part to the dynamics of the prey species, were also found to be significant. Crustaceans were the predominant prey throughout the study with the exception of autumn, when fish were the most common prey.  相似文献

Fleas associated with small mammals from seven localities from northern and central Chile were assessed. We captured 352 small mammals belonging to 12 species from which we obtained 675 fleas belonging to 15 different species. The most frequently captured flea species were Neotyphloceras crassispina crassispina (n = 198) and N. chilensis (n = 175). High values of flea species richness and diversity were found in Fray Jorge National Park (NP), a north‐central Chilean site, whereas the highest values of mean abundance (MA) and prevalence were found in three diverse sites that include Los Molles River, a high altitude site located in north‐central Chile, Fray Jorge NP and Dichato, in south‐central Chile. On the other hand, high values of flea richness and diversity were found on two rodent species, Abrothrix olivacea and A. longipilis, whereas the highest values of MA and prevalence were found on Oligoryzomys longicaudatus, A. longipilis and Phyllotis xanthopygus. A total of three new host recordings, nine new localities and nine new host species and locality recordings are reported. Also, this study represents the first known record of Tetrapsyllus (Tetrapsyllus) comis in Chile and the first ecological analysis of Neotyphloceras chilensis.  相似文献
