Brycon nattereri (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae), a threatened South American freshwater fish, occurs in the Paraná, Tocantins and São Francisco river basins in central Brazil. It is a middle-sized (up to 50 cm SL), omnivorous species, which occurs in swift, clear-water rivers with well-preserved riparian vegetation. Main threats to the species are water pollution, dam building, and deforestation.  相似文献

We describe seven microsatellite loci, including tetra‐, tri‐ and dinucleotides, isolated from Brycon hilarii, which is a migratory fish inhabiting the Paraguay River basin (Brazil) and is highly valued for its meat quality. Three to eight alleles per locus were detected and the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.31 to 0.81. Positive results were obtained with cross‐amplification in five other species of Brycon. These microsatellites provide a potential tool for wild population and aquaculture studies of B. hilarii and other species of the genus.  相似文献

Dam constructions cause fundamental changes in the natural landscape, creating new ecological and evolutionary challenges for aquatic organisms. In some cases, such water impoundments have been related with morphological changes in organisms. Understanding how populations respond to rapid environmental changes imposed by dams is the first step to elucidate the consequences that disturbed habitats may have on species evolution. In this work, we analyzed shape and size variation in Bryconamericus iheringii Boulenger 1887 from the Chasqueiro stream basin, south of Brazil, which was recently dammed. We used linear measurements and geometric morphometrics to identify morphological differences among specimens from the reservoir (lentic habitat) compared to the habitat upstream and downstream of the dam (lotic habitats). We also tested for size- and shape-related sexual dimorphism to determine whether variations observed were the same for both sexes. We found that B. iheringii from the artificial reservoir were distinct in shape and size to those from their natural habitat in the stream. The size variation between environments was the same for both sexes, but the shape variation differed between males and females. Regarding the linear measurements, lotic populations were larger (greater body length, width, pectoral fin base length and caudal peduncle length), probably in response to increased swimming activity. Regarding body shape, we found that both sexes have a more fusiform body in lotic habitats than in the reservoir. In addition, females showed an altered mouth position that was distinct between these environments. This work indicates that the water reservoir seems to be an important factor influencing morphological variation in B. iheringii, a species with sexual shape dimorphism.

The use of fresh soybeans as an attractant in fishing has been altering the diet of the characiform Brycon falcatus, which are thriving at fishing spots. This has subsequently affected the amount of abdominal fat in the species from the Tapajós River basin, Southern Amazon. In the Teles Pires River basin region, one of the most common capture techniques employed by fishermen is the use of attractant feeds (soybeans, corn, cassava) at certain locations to attract mostly omnivorous fish. Tourists also feed fish chips and breadcrumbs. In the experimental design, rivers were mapped according to attractant availability to develop an attractant‐density classification system comprising four rivers with different attractant densities (low, medium, and high), plus a river serving as control (no attractants). Monthly collections were carried out during the 2012 and 2013 dry seasons. For diet analyses, methods of frequency of occurrence and relative volume were used to calculate the feeding index (IAi) of 97 specimens. For analyses of abdominal fat, an index was calculated by dividing the wet weight of the abdominal fat by the total wet weight of each individual. Standard length ranged from 15.0 to 48.5 cm, and weight between 0.18 and 4.40 kg. Composition and diversity of diet items changed with the increasing density of attractants. In the river with a high attractant density, fresh soybeans and corn were dominant diet items; in the control river, the diet was natural (e.g. seeds, fruits, leaves, and insects) and therefore similar to those described for B. falcatus in undisturbed environments. Fish collected from rivers with high attractant densities were in better condition than those from the river with no attractants. Although use of attractants is prohibited by State legislation, there are no inspections. This study clearly shows an alteration in the natural diet and abdominal fat of B. falcatus resulting from an imbalanced, high‐calorie feed via an attractant. It is recommended that these areas be monitored for the preservation of B. falcatus.  相似文献

Aim In aquatic ecosystems, standing (lentic) and running (lotic) waters differ fundamentally in their stability and persistence, shaping the comparative population genetic structure, geographical range size and speciation rates of lentic versus lotic lineages. While the drivers of this pattern remain incompletely understood, the suite of traits making up the ability of a species to establish new populations is instrumental in determining such differences. Here we explore the degree to which the association between habitat type and geographical range size results from differences in dispersal ability or fundamental niche breadth in the members of the Enochrus bicolor complex, an aquatic beetle clade with species across the lentic–lotic divide. Location Western Mediterranean, with a special focus on North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and Sicily. Methods DNA sequences for four loci were obtained from species of the E. bicolor complex and analysed using phylogenetic inference. Dispersal and establishment abilities were assessed in lentic–lotic species pairs of the complex, using flight wing morphometrics and thermal tolerance ranges as surrogates, respectively. Results There were clear differences in range size between the lotic and lentic taxa of the complex, which appears to have had a lotic origin with two transitions to standing waters. Only small differences were observed in temperature tolerance and acclimation ability between the two lotic–lentic sister species studied. By contrast, wing morphometrics revealed clear, consistent differences between lotic and lentic Enochrus species pairs, the latter having a higher dispersal capacity. Main conclusions We hypothesize that there have been two habitat shifts from lotic to lentic waters, which have allowed marked expansions in geographical range size in western Mediterranean species of the E. bicolor complex. Differences in dispersal rather than in establishment ability appear to underlie differences in geographical range extent, as transitions to lentic waters were associated with changes in wing morphology, but not in thermal tolerance range. In this lineage of water beetles, selection for dispersal in geologically short‐lived lentic systems has driven the evolution of larger range sizes in lentic taxa compared with those of their lotic relatives.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to test if morphological differences in pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus found in their native range (eastern North America) that are linked to feeding regime, competition with other species, hydrodynamic forces and habitat were also found among stream‐ and lake‐ or reservoir‐dwelling fish in Iberian systems. The species has been introduced into these systems, expanding its range, and is presumably well adapted to freshwater Iberian Peninsula ecosystems. The results show a consistent pattern for size of lateral fins, with L. gibbosus that inhabit streams in the Iberian Peninsula having longer lateral fins than those inhabiting reservoirs or lakes. Differences in fin placement, body depth and caudal peduncle dimensions do not differentiate populations of L. gibbosus from lentic and lotic water bodies and, therefore, are not consistent with functional expectations. Lepomis gibbosus from lotic and lentic habitats also do not show a consistent pattern of internal morphological differentiation, probably due to the lack of lotic–lentic differences in prey type. Overall, the univariate and multivariate analyses show that most of the external and internal morphological characters that vary among populations do not differentiate lotic from lentic Iberian populations. The lack of expected differences may be a consequence of the high seasonal flow variation in Mediterranean streams, and the resultant low‐ or no‐flow conditions during periods of summer drought.  相似文献

Monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis and racer goby N. gymnotrachelus, both native to the Ponto‐Caspian region, were discovered in Polish rivers during the mid‐1990s and currently they are invading the River Vistula. Preliminary studies were carried out on the diet of both species at two sites in the lower River Vistula, one lotic (main channel of the river downstream of the W?oc?awek river reservoir) and the other lentic (left bank, middle section of the W?oc?awek Reservoir). Significant differences were noted in diet between the two species and within species according to habitat, in particular the types of chironomid taxa taken. Over a single diel cycle, monkey goby were captured between 07:00 and 19:00 hours only, feeding more intensively on chironomid larvae than the racer goby, which was captured at most times of day. The wide diet plasticity of these non‐native fish species favours their expansion.  相似文献

1. As species' physiological breadth determines their potential to deal with environmental changes, and influences individuals' survival and the persistence of populations, information about lethal and sublethal responses could be fundamental for conservation purposes. 2. We used a standard experimental approach to explore mortality and behavioural avoidance responses (i.e. flight and emersion from the water) to a combination of acute heat and osmotic stress on six species of saline water beetles (belonging to Enochrus, Nebrioporus, and Ochthebius genera). 3. Heat stress affected survival and behavioural responses in all of the species, whereas osmotic stress and the interaction between both stressors only showed significant effects for the Ochthebius genus. Behavioural and survival patterns were highly interrelated across the stress gradients. The Enochrus and Nebrioporus studied species showed maximum avoidance activity at 35–40 °C, and a short (< 30 min) exposure to 45 °C was lethal. Ochthebius species were the most heat tolerant and displayed increasing behavioural responses with increasing temperature. In the Nebrioporus and Ochthebius genera, the species occupying lotic, more environmentally stable habitats, showed greater mortality, and avoidance responses were higher or initiated at lower stress thresholds than lentic species. In contrast, both Enochrus species displayed a similar mortality, and the lentic species E. bicolor emerged and flew more than the lotic E. falcarius, in concordance with its higher dispersal capacity. 4. Avoidance responses could provide interesting information about species' physiological amplitudes as a complement to lethal responses. The lotic species here studied showed narrower physiological amplitude (i.e. N. baeticus and O. glaber) or lower dispersal ability (i.e. E. falcarius) than their lentic relatives; both traits could result in a higher vulnerability of lotic species to thermal habitat changes.  相似文献

  1. The importance of flow‐related factors to benthic organisms, as well as the role of habitat conditions in shaping aquatic communities during low‐flow periods, have been recognised. Despite this, the preferences of macroinvertebrates to the ratio of lentic to lotic habitats at the reach scale have not been accurately quantified in most instances.
  2. Aquatic invertebrates and habitat features in a range of temporary rivers in Sardinia were investigated. The investigation focused on the flow‐related characteristics that contribute to defining the lentic–lotic condition of the river reaches. The relation of habitat features to benthic taxa distributions was assessed using multidimensional scaling. The main aim of the paper was to quantify the responses of taxa to the different lentic and lotic habitat conditions by applying hierarchical logistic regressions. Finally, taxon optima were aligned along the lentic–lotic gradient and the responses of different taxonomic groups compared.
  3. Unbroken waves and imperceptible flow were correlated with benthic taxa variability, suggesting local hydraulics and turbulence have a major role in regulating community composition. The overall lentic–lotic character of the river reaches was also clearly related to the benthic taxa distribution. More than 80% of taxa were significantly related to the lentic–lotic gradient, and an asymmetrical response curve was the predominant model.
  4. Benthic groups showed taxon optima clustered in different ranges of the lentic–lotic gradient. Odonata, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Mollusca preferred clearly lentic conditions. Diptera mainly ranged on the lotic side of the gradient, while Trichoptera were relatively uniformly distributed across the gradient. Ephemeroptera taxa clustered in intermediate lentic–lotic conditions, with two species preferring extremely lentic habitats. In general, optima converged at intermediate and extremely lentic conditions, presumably due, respectively, to the coexistence of different lentic and lotic features and to the highly diverse environmental characteristics under extremely lentic situations.
  5. These results support the conclusion that dissimilar ecological factors act on benthic taxa along the lentic–lotic range and species favouring different lentic–lotic conditions are subjected to pressures of different nature. This should not be ignored when defining species preferences and studying community structure or relationships between species in Mediterranean rivers, which cyclically vary their habitat composition. In addition, the uneven distribution of optima of different groups along the lentic–lotic gradient might affect macroinvertebrate metrics when assessing ecological status or establishing reference conditions under variable climatic conditions.

We classified 235 randomly selected lentic waterbodies (>1 ha) in the Northeast USA as human created, or natural. We compared geographic extent and distribution, morphology and hydrology, trophic state, and fish assemblage metrics of impoundments and natural drainage lakes. We estimated that 46% of the 10 608 (±1695; 95% CI) lentic waterbodies in the region were impoundments or quarries; 68% of Uplands lakes and 26% of Lowlands lakes were natural. Impoundments were smaller, shallower, had shorter water residence times, and were in watersheds with greater human activity than were natural drainage lakes. More than half (55%) of Lowlands impoundments were eutrophic, accounting for 67% of eutrophic or hypereutrophic lentic waterbodies in the Northeast. An estimated 90% of eutrophic lakes and impoundments were <23 ha. Impoundments had greater proportions of fish species and individuals tolerant of human disturbance, and greater proportions of non-native species and individuals than did natural drainage lakes. We discuss some management implications of the differences between impoundments and natural drainage lakes.  相似文献

Brycon spp. occur in Neotropical watersheds to the west and east of the Andes, and as they are sensitive to anthropogenic changes, many these species are endangered in southeastern Brazil. Coastal rivers in southeastern Brazil are characterized by the presence of relatively few freshwater fish species and high endemism of this fauna. The objective of this study was to examine whether Brycon spp. occurring in the coastal basins of southeastern Brazil are monophyletic, using cytogenetic data, mitochondrial, and nuclear molecular markers. All the species showed a diploid number of 50 chromosomes, a conserved number within the subfamily Bryconinae. However, the karyotypic formulas were unique to most species, including Brycon devillei (26m+22sm+2st), Brycon ferox (26m+12sm+12st), Brycon insignis (22m+20sm+8st), Brycon opalinus, and Brycon vermelha (24m+20sm+6st), indicating the prevalence of pericentric and paracentric inversions in the chromosomal evolution of these species. All of them had nucleolar organizer regions in the first pair of subtelocentric chromosomes and no equilocal distribution of heterochromatin in the first pair of chromosomes of the karyotype. These two features, not seen in any other Brycon spp. examined to date, indicate that Bryconinae species from the Brazilian southeastern coastal basins, including the monotypic genus Henochilus, are monophyletic. Also, this is the first study that reports NOR location and C-banding patterns as synapomorphies for a Neotropical fish species group. The monophyly was also supported by a phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA (16S), cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), alpha-myosin (MYH6) genes and S72 intron molecular data. Our results partially corroborate the “Brycon acuminatus” group proposed by Howes in 1982: our proposed clade keeps B. devillei, B. ferox, and B. insignis; but it also includes B. opalinus, B. vermelha, and H. weatlandii whereas it excludes B. nattereri. The phylogeographic unit formed by Bryconinae species in southeastern Brazil reflects the long and isolated paleohydrological history of these coastal basins relative to the continental watersheds.  相似文献

Freshwater fishes often show large amounts of body shape variation across divergent habitats and, in most cases, the observed differences have been attributed to the environmental pressures of living in lentic or lotic habitats. Previous studies have suggested a distinct set characters and morphological features for species occupying each habitat under the steady–unsteady swimming performance model. We tested this model and assessed body shape variation using geometric morphometrics for two widespread fishes, Goodea atripinnis (Goodeidae) and Chirostoma jordani (Atherinopsidae), inhabiting lentic and lotic habitats across the Mesa Central of Mexico. These species were previously shown to display little genetic variation across their respective ranges. Our body shape analyses reveal morphometric differentiation along the same axes for both species in each habitat. Both possess a deeper body shape in lentic habitats and a more streamlined body in lotic habitats, although the degree of divergence between habitats was less for C. jordani. Differences in the position of the mouth differed between habitats as well, with both species possessing a more superior mouth in lentic habitats. These recovered patterns are generally consistent with the steady–unsteady swimming model and highlight the significance of environmental forces in driving parallel body shape differences of organisms in divergent habitats. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 114 , 152–162.  相似文献

Synopsis We assessed the structure of the fish assemblages in the Itaipu Reservoir (Paraná River, Brazil-Paraguay) along a longitudinal or river-dam gradient (composed of riverine, transitional and lacustrine zones) and transversal or upstream–downstream gradients of the tributaries (composed of lotic and lentic stretches of tributaries and reservoir shores). We sampled stations distributed along the environmental gradients quarterly during two years. We caught mostly piscivorous, detritivorous and insectivorous fishes. The structure of the whole fish assemblage both at the regional spatial scale and at the zones of each gradient was significantly non-random according to null models and ordination analysis. When the assemblage was broken into groups, the piscivores and detritivores as well as the predators and prey showed significant non-random structure whereas the insectivores, omnivores, herbivores, benthophages and mud-eaters showed random structure. The first groups are those that had more species and the last mentioned are those with fewer species. The tributaries varied more in composition among themselves than the reservoir shores, showing a high heterogeneity in the transversal gradient. The most widespread species was the introduced piscivore Plagioscion squamosissimus. The loricariids were most abundant in the lotic and lentic stretches of the tributaries. We also observed temporal variability in species composition, mainly in the reservoir shores possibly due to the influence of the upstream floodplain on the migratory fish that periodically use the reservoir as feeding habitat. In the tributaries, the temporal changes were less predictable. A combination of habitat preferences and interactions among species, especially predator–prey relations, might be responsible for the observed structure patterns.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to verify whether the in situ supply of soybean as a fish attractant bears any influence on the length–weight relationship and condition factor of the omnivorous fish species, Brycon falcatus. In addition, estimated was the length–weight relationship, standard and total length, condition factor, and size of B. falcatus in the spawning period in the Teles Pires River Basin. In the experimental design, rivers of the Teles Pires Basin containing soybean attractant (Verde River, Celeste River, Teles Pires River and the Tapaiuna River) were mapped. Fish were also collected from the Cristalino River, which contained no soybean attractant (treatment control). Samples were collected from August 2012 to July 2013. Length–weight relationship of B. falcatus in the Teles Pires River Basin can be obtained by the expression: Wt = 0.0091*SL3.376, r2 = .97, = 102, and length‐length relationship: TL = 1.128*SL + 3.978, r2 = .96. The condition factor of all specimens collected in the Teles Pires Basin was k = 1.055. Size at capable phase (L50) of spawning was estimated at 23 cm standard length. Results showed no significant difference in the length–weight relationship or condition factor of B. falcatus collected from rivers with or without soybean attractant. Concluded is that the in situ supply of soybean as a fish attractant does not interfere with the wellbeing of B. Falcatus in the Teles Pires River Basin.  相似文献

The distribution of 17 Potamogeton species was examined at 430 sites in central North America with respect to water body type, bottom substrate and 8 water chemistry parameters (pH, total dissolved solids, total alkalinity, chloride, sulphate, phosphorus, combined nitrate and nitrite, and dissolved organic matter). All except 2 of the species showed statistically significant distributions with respect to some of the environmental parameters examined. Each species occupied a different combination of chemical parameter ranges. The species formed a distribution spectrum with respect to water chemistry, with P. epihydrus and P. obtusifolius frequenting low inorganic concentrations at one end of the scale, and P. filiformis, P. pectinatus and P. vaginatus at the other end, these species characterized by high mean inorganic values and occurring most often in saline or alkaline habitats. While 41 significant positive interspecific associations were found within the genus in lentic waters, only 4 were apparent in lotic habitats. Potamogeton species richness (PR) was related to water body and bottom type, with lakes and sand bottoms showing the highest mean PR values. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that, in the area as a whole, the water chemistry parameters examined accounted for <25% of the observed variability in PR. The relative importance of individual chemical parameters in relation to PR varied in different water body types.  相似文献

Lentic habitats (standing water, such as ponds and lakes) differ from lotic habitats (running water; streams and rivers) in their spatiotemporal persistence, with lentic habitats being more ephemeral in evolutionary time. This habitat instability is thought to select for dispersal, and several phylogenetic and macroecological studies have suggested that high rates of dispersal are more characteristic of lentic than lotic species. We tested this hypothesis using a comparative population genetic and phylogeographic approach based on mitochondrial DNA for 59 aquatic beetle species, sampled across Madagascar. Species were classified as lotic (n = 25), lentic (n = 25), or lotolentic (associated with both running and standing water; n = 9). Hierarchical population genetic structure (AMOVA), nucleotide diversity (π), and geographic structure were compared among habitat types. Lotic species had significantly greater population structure (ФST = 0.55, hierarchical AMOVA) than lentic (ФST = 0.13) and lotolentic (ФST = 0.19) species using phylogenetic generalized least squares (PGLS) to correct for phylogeny. Body size was independent of habitat preference, and did not explain any of the intraspecific variation. A greater proportion of lotic species were endemic to Madagascar and lotic species had more pronounced geographic structure in their haplotype networks. The results indicate that dispersal is consistently lower among lotic species, independent of phylogenetic relatedness. This has macroevolutionary and biogeographical consequences for the freshwater fauna of this tropical biodiversity hotspot where remaining natural habitats are becoming increasingly isolated from one another.  相似文献

The reports of testate amoebae species in Colombia are limited to a few studies in lentic and peat bog systems; however, the diversity in lotic systems has been poorly investigated. Zooplankton sampling was performed in lotic environments of the Piedemonte Llanero in Colombia. Ten individuals of the species Arcella gandalfi were identified to document the first record of A. gandalfi from the Piedemonte Llanero in Colombia, expanding its distribution from Brazil to Colombia. This finding corroborates the status of A. gandalfi as a flagship species from the South America continent.  相似文献
