Translational proteomics in neurodegenerative diseases--16th HUPO BPP workshop September 5, 2011 Geneva, Switzerland

The HUPO Brain Proteome Project (HUPO BPP) held its 16th workshop in Geneva, Switzerland, on September 5, 2011 during the 10th HUPO World Congress. The focus was on launching the Human Brain Proteome Atlas as well as ideas, strategies and methodological aspects in clinical neuroproteomics.

During the 10th HUPO Annual World Congress held in Geneva (Switzerland) from 4th to 7th September, a workshop on Human Liver Proteome Project (HLPP) Initiative took place. Four research groups presented their latest results from different ongoing projects. Later on, during the HLPP executive members' meeting, the status of current projects and the next possible steps to be taken were discussed.

Outlook for Restrictive Animal Legislation in the 89th Congress

Past records indicate that legislation, be it extreme or moderate in design, will be the goal of the proponents of restrictive animal legislation in the 89th Congress. Bills similar to those introduced in past sessions almost surely will appear again. If the President succeeds in soliciting congressional support for his goals of the Great Society, Congress may have little time for other legislative matters. The medical and scientific forces that oppose the use of federal legislation as a means of upgrading the standards of animal care and improving the validity of the results of biological research can be expected to continue their support of voluntary control through education and research. Continued support of the effective “task forces” and public relations programs that developed during the 88th Congress must come from all segments of the organized health professions.     

The 2009 Human Liver Proteome Project (HLPP) Workshop 26 September 2009, Toronto,Canada

The Human Liver Proteome Project (HLPP) was formally launched by HUPO in 2002. The 11th HLPP Workshop was held on September 26th, 2009 during the 8th HUPO World Congress in Toronto, Canada. The representative progresses were presented from four groups. Subsequently, the workshop ended with a lively discussion on four topics related to the project as well as other initiatives.

The 10th International Palynological Congress (IPC) will be held in Nanjing from 24th to 30th June, 2000. This meeting is an important event in the field of palynology in China, which will create increasing impacts on palynological studies, communities and co-operations. As a gift to this congress, we have collected a part of Quaternary pollen-study products in which the major studies were carried by Chinese palynologists during the last 10 years, assembled in the present issue.

The 275th anniversary of Russian Academy of Sciences and history of biophysics

Within the framework of scientific arrangements devoted to the 275th Anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Second Congress of Biophysicists of Russia was held in Moscow from 23 to 27 August 1999 on the basis of the Lomonosov State University. More than 600 scientists from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States took part in the Congress. Below we present abridged a report of the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Prof. G.R. Ivanitskii. This report opened the Congress.     

The necessity, aim and tasks of establishing the Oncology Nursing Section of the Hungarian Cancer Society

The Hungarian Cancer Society organized its 27th Congress in Budapest on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The 27th jubilee celebration congress took part in the spirit of this in the Budapest Congress and World Trade Center between November 8-10. The Oncology Nursing part had its turn on 10 November where within the frames of Oncology Nursing the invited could listen to presentations in 3 different sections: Prevention, Active Clinical Oncology Nursing and Cure of Souls-Rehabilitation. I could also call November 10th a day of historic importance since the Nursing Section had the opportunity for reorganization on its 50th anniversary and could hold its statutory meeting as a member of the Society of the same rank. Dr. Jan Foubert Ph.D., the former president and present Executive Director of EONS (European Oncology Nursing Society), honored the congress with his presence, assisting our work with his valuable pieces of advice. As a result of this on December 1, 2007 our Section could join EONS, which is centered in Brussels and has 29 countries as members well-prepared. With the Section having been reorganized, a wide cooperation amongst doctors, oncologists, oncology nurses and further experts could start, where they can all work together now against cancer, a serious problem of our age all over the world.     

The 12th Human Liver Proteome Project (HLPP) Workshop,September 2010, Sydney,Australia

The 12th HLPP workshop was held in conjunction with the 9th HUPO 2010 World Congress on September 20th in Sydney, Australia. This 2‐h workshop was chaired by Prof. Fuchu He (Beijing Proteome Research Center). Highlights included: (i) progress of the post‐translational modification of liver proteome; (ii) construction of the human liver protein interaction and localization maps; (iii) progress made in terms of identifying biomarker for liver diseases; and (iv) discussion on the second phase of the initiative. This was followed by a lively discussion related to the project.
