Race,Menopause, Health-Related Quality of Life,and Psychological Well-Being in Obese Women

Objective: To investigate the health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in African-American (AA) and white (W) obese women. Research Methods and Procedures: Participants were 145 obese women (80 AA and 65 W; 87 premenopausal and 58 postmenopausal) who completed the Medical Outcomes Study short form, the Brief Symptom Inventory, the Life Distress Inventory, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale before entering a weight-loss study. The mean age of the subjects was 46.3 ± 11.1 years and the mean body mass index was 35.2 ± 4.2 kg/m². Results: Although AA women were slightly heavier (95.3 ± 10.3 kg vs. 91.5 ± 11.6 kg, p < 0.05) and less educated (14.2 ± 3.7 years vs. 15.7 ± 3.7 years, p < 0.05) than the W women in the sample, there was no difference between the two ethnic groups in any of the reported HR-QOL variables. Menopausal status had a significant effect on HR-QOL, with premenopausal women being more distressed (p = 0.002), having more limitations in social activity (p = 0.007), and having less vitality (p < 0.001) than the postmenopausal women. This was especially true in the AA women. Discussion: These data show no difference in HR-QOL between AA and W obese women and suggest that menopausal status may have an impact on HR-QOL, especially in AA women.

Survivorship and fecundity of Argulus bengalensis (Crustacea; Branchiura) under laboratory conditions

The Life table features and the fecundity schedule of the fish louse Argulus bengalensis (Branchiura: Argulidae) were estimated under laboratory conditions using Cirrhinus mrigala as the model host. The cohort-based Life table revealed that survival of A. bengalensis declines as a function of age. Life expectancy was observed to be 34?days for a newly emerged adult. The mean number of eggs produced per egg strip was 86 (±8.89 S.E.). The sex ratio 2:1 was biased towards males. The net reproductive rate (R₀) varied between 50 and 487 while the cohort generation time (T_c) ranged between 24 and 26?days. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) was 0.14–0.23, while the finite rate of increase (λ) remained between 1.16 and 1.28. The Life table features and the fecundity schedule of A. bengalensis are comparable with congenerics of temperate regions. Early reproduction (between 21 and 23?days) and an extended postreproductive phase (47?days) of females are characteristic of A. bengalensis and a reflection for survival under uncertain conditions and a parasitic mode of life.

丛枝菌根真菌促进南美蟛蜞菊生长及对难溶磷的吸收

为了解2种丛枝菌根真菌(AMF)摩西管柄囊霉(Funneliformis mosseae, FM)和地表球囊霉(Glomus versiforme, GV)对入侵植物南美蟛蜞菊(Wedelia trilobata)的生长和对难溶性磷酸盐利用的影响,采用沙培盆栽方式,研究了南美蟛蜞菊在接种AMF与添加难溶性磷酸盐的生长和磷含量的变化。结果表明,在磷限制环境下FM对南美蟛蜞菊的侵染率达55%～69%,GV的侵染率达到63%～80%。添加难溶性磷酸盐后,2种AMF均促进了南美蟛蜞菊茎的伸长(FM:+46%; GV:+65%)、总生物量的增加(FM:+27.2%; GV:+40%)和磷含量的增加(FM:+36.6%; GV:+40.7%)。对比FM,GV对植物利用难溶性磷有更显著的促进作用。因此,南美蟛蜞菊与2种AMF形成的共生体系可以促进植物生长和对营养资源的利用,提高对难溶性磷的吸收效率可能使得南美蟛蜞菊在营养贫乏的环境中更好地建立种群。

以1年生毛竹实生苗为研究对象,研究多效唑对不同水分条件下毛竹实生苗的叶绿素含量、光合参数、非结构性碳水化合物(NSC)含量、碳氮比、根系活力的影响。设置3个水分梯度:W1(75%相对田间持水量,CK)、W2(50%相对田间持水量,中度干旱)和W3(35%相对田间持水量,重度干旱),以及2个多效唑浓度:P1(0mg/L)、P2(40mg/L)。结果表明:随干旱强度增加,P1W1、P1W2、P1W3处理叶色逐渐变淡。与对照P1W1相比,P1W2和P1W3处理下叶绿素a、叶绿素b、类胡萝卜素、叶绿素a/b和叶绿素总含量显著下降(P0.05),Pn、Tr、WUE显著下降(P0.05),Ls显著上升(P0.05),毛竹叶片及根系中非结构性碳水化合物(NSC)含量显著上升(P0.05),毛竹根系活力显著下降。多效唑处理后,P2W2和P2W3的叶片色素含量相对于P2W1显著提高,但P2W2与P2W3无显著差异。同时,施加多效唑使Pn显著提高,P2W3较P1W3增加了146.9%。此外,P2W3处理使可溶性糖大量积累,达最大值3.41mg/g;毛竹叶片及根系淀粉含量显著上升,根系活力显著提高。试验揭示了多效唑通过提高干旱水平下毛竹实生苗的根系活力、光合速率,增加光合色素、非结构性碳水化合物含量,并将养分从地上转移到地下部分,进而抵御干旱胁迫带来的伤害。
