Analyses of fine-scale and macrogeographic genetic structure in plant populations provide an initial indication of how gene flow, natural selection, and genetic drift may collectively influence the distribution of genetic variation. The objective of our study is to evaluate the spatial dispersion of alleles within and among subpopulations of a tropical shrub, Psychotria officinalis (Rubiaceae), in a lowland wet forest in Costa Rica. This insect-pollinated, self-incompatible understory plant is dispersed primarily by birds, some species of which drop the seeds immediately while others transport seeds away from the parent plant. Thus, pollination should promote gene flow while at least one type of seed dispersal agent might restrict gene flow. Sampling from five subpopulations in undisturbed wet forest at Estación Biologíca La Selva, Costa Rica, we used electrophoretically detected isozyme markers to examine the spatial scale of genetic structure. Our goals are: 1) describe genetic diversity of each of the five subpopulations of Psychotria officinalis sampled within a contiguous wet tropical forest; 2) evaluate fine-scale genetic structure of adults of P. officinalis within a single 2.25-ha mapped plot; and 3) estimate genetic structure of P. officinalis using data from five subpopulations located up to 2 km apart. Using estimates of coancestry, statistical analyses reveal significant positive genetic correlations between individuals on a scale of 5 m but no significant genetic relatedness beyond that interplant distance within the studied subpopulation. Multilocus estimates of genetic differentiation among subpopulations were low, but significant (Fst = 0.095). Significant Fst estimates were largely attributable to a single locus (Lap-2). Thus, multilocus estimates of Fst may be influenced by microgeographic selection. If true, then the observed levels of IBD may be overestimates.  相似文献

This study explores whether ecological factors, such as pollinators and pollen flow, or variation in pollen and ovule development account for the observed differences (approximately twofold) in the reproductive output of pin and thrum individuals of Erythroxylum havanense. The importance of ecological factors was assessed by means of comparison of the identity of pollinators and the rates of flower visitation, and by performing controlled hand pollinations and measurements of fruit set. In addition, we described the pollen and ovule development of thrum and pin individuals. Our results indicate that pollinators of E. havanense do not distinguish between floral morphs. The differences in fruit set between pin and thrum plants held even after hand pollination and, therefore, the observed differences in reproductive output between floral morphs of E. havanense cannot be explained in terms of asymmetrical pollen flow. There were no differences in the pattern of gynoecium development between the pin and thrum morphs, however androecium development showed marked differences between the morphs, and there was a resemblance between the developmental pathways leading to male sterility of the thrum morph of E. havanense with that of species with cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS).  相似文献

We studied a population of the distylousPalicourea padifolia (Rubiaceae) in a cloud forest remnant near Xalapa City, Veracruz, México to explore possible asymmetries between floral morphs in the attractiveness to pollinators, seed dispersers, nectar robbers, floral parasites, and herbivores. We first assessed heterostyly and reciprocal herkogamy by measuring floral attributes such as corolla length (buds and open flowers), style and anther heights, stigma and stamen lengths and the distance between the anther tip to the stigma lobe. We then estimated floral and fruit attributes such as flower size, anther height, number and size of pollen grains, fruit size, seed size, nectar production, and flower and fruit standing crops to assess differences between floral morphs in attracting and effectively using mutualistic pollinators and seed dispersers. Also, floral parasitism and nectar robbing were assessed in this study as a measure of flower attractiveness to antagonists. The system seems to conform well to classical heterostyly (e.g. reciprocal stamen/style lengths, pollen and anther dimorphism, intramorph incompatibility) yet, there were several tantalizing differences observed between pin and thrum morphs. Thrum flowers have longer corollas and larger but fewer pollen grains than pin flowers. Both morphs produced the same total number of inflorescences, developed the same number of buds, and opened the same number of flowers per inflorescence during the flowering season. Nectar production and sugar concentration were similar between floral morphs but the reward was not offered symmetrically to floral visitors throughout the day. Nectar concentration was higher in pin flowers in the afternoon. The numbers of developing, fully developed, and ripe fruits were the same between floral morphs, however, fruits and seeds were larger than those of thrums. The incidence of fly larvae was higher among thrum flowers and damage by nectar robbing was the same between floral morphs. Fruit abortion patterns of flowers manually pollinated suggest intra-morph sterility (self and intramorph incompatibility). There were no differences between morphs in fruit and seed set per flower following legitimate pollination although thrums were more leaky than the pins (intramorph compatibility).  相似文献

In this paper I report components of effectiveness for pollinators of a tropical distylous shrub, Psychotria suerrensis (Rubiaceae), which is visited by a variety of bees, wasps, and butterflies, and by two species of hummingbirds. In the field, I measured the following components of effectiveness: frequency of visits, evenness of visits across plants, and diurnal pattern of visits. I also used flight-cage experiments to compare pollentransfer abilities of euglossine bees and heliconiid butterflies. Euglossine bees visited more frequently, visited earlier in the day, and visited a higher proportion of plants in the population than did other taxa. In flight cage experiments, bees and butterflies transferred similar amounts of pollen overall, but bees transferred significantly more inter-morph (compatible) pollen. For each component measured, euglossine bees appeared to be the most effective pollinators.  相似文献

Mucilage-secreting dendroid trichomes develop from the adaxial epidermis of young stipules surrounding the shoot apex. Each trichome consists of a multicellular stalk from which radiate many branch cells. The trichome has no cuticle and the branch cell walls distally are loose cellulosic frameworks. Dictyosomes produce vesicles whose products are secreted through the plasma-lemma and cell wall. Enlarged portions of the ER are frequently associated with dictyosomes and may be part of the system for synthesis and transport of secretion products. Bacteria, which later occur in leaf nodules, are present in the mucilage surrounding trichomes and young leaves. The latter develop stomata through which the bacteria enter. As stipules and leaves grow out of the apical region, the secretory trichomes degenerate and are replaced by non-secretory ones.  相似文献

In this study we quantify the relative rates and amounts of between-morph (legitimate) cross-pollination, within-morph (illegitimate) cross-pollination and self-pollination in a natural population of distylous Gaertnera vaginata (Rubiaceae) endemic to the oceanic island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Since pollen size distributions of each morph overlap we develop a method, based on chi-squared comparisons of observed to expected pollen size distributions, to quantify pollen transfer proficiencies. This method, unlike previous methods, does not assume an equal chance of pollen transfer for pollen grains in the region of overlap. The probability that a single pollen grain from a short-styled plant undergoes legitimate pollen transfer to long-styled flowers (4.19×10−2) was more than twice that for illegitimate transfer to other short-styled plants (1.56×10−2). In contrast, the probability that a single pollen grain from a long-styled flower undergoes legitimate pollen transfer to short-styled flowers (1.65×10−2) was no greater than that of illegitimate pollen transfer to other long-styled plants (2.15×10−2). The transfer proficiencies of individual pollen grains are thus highly asymmetric. However, because long-styled flowers produce significantly more pollen, the ratio of legitimate to illegitimate pollen on the stigmas of short-styled flowers (1.85) markedly exceeded that for long-styled flowers (1.11). Short-styled flowers incurred significantly higher levels of self-pollination than long-styled plants, emphasizing the importance for self-pollination to be removed before comparing stigmatic pollen loads. The method we propose could be applied to other distylous species with pollen size overlap between morphs and thus allow for a more widespread study of the pollination ecology of heterostylous species.  相似文献

The population genetics and mating system of the understory tropical rain forest tree Psychotria faxlucens were studied at two plots in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, México, on the Gulf of México coast. This species is distylous and is pollinated by moths, mainly small hawkmoths. The seeds are dispersed by gravity and by frugivorous birds. Controlled pollinations indicate that the trees are self-incompatible and that intramorph pollinations have lower compatibilities than intermorph pollinations. The pollen: ovule ratio is high, suggesting obligate xenogamy. Using electrophoretic allozyme methods we found that eight out of 20 loci were polymorphic (P = 0.400), the observed heterozygosity (H) was 0.198, and the mean expected heterozygosity (H) was 0.495, both relatively high values compared with that reported for tropical trees. The genetic differentiation between the two plots is low, as shown by the heterogeneity in allele frequencies and the Fst (mean Fst seedlings = 0.031, mean Fst adults = 0.026), although for some loci the plot differentiation is statistically significant. The studied populations are near Hardy-Weinberg proportions, both for seedlings (mean F = 0.128) and adults (mean F = 0.075). From the fixation rate, an indirect estimate of the outcrossing rate at equilibrium gave a mean of t = 0.898 for plot 1 and 0.685 for plot 2. Direct single loci and multiloci outcrossing rate estimates were generally not statistically different from 1.0.  相似文献

Physiological responses to seasonal drought were explored for Psychotria limonensis (Rubiaceae), an abundant understory shrub in a seasonally dry tropical forest in Panama. Control and irrigated plants were compared at the beginning and again at the end of the 4-mo dry season. Stomatal conductance remained high throughout for irrigated plants, but fell to very low levels for control plants late in the dry season. Net assimilation rates under both saturating and ambient light were unaffected by irrigation. As a consequence, instantaneous water-use efficiency (assimilation ÷ evapotranspiration), derived from gas exchange measures, and long-term water-use efficiency, estimated from stable carbon isotope ratios of leaf tissue, were similar for both treatments. The maintenance of high assimilation rates despite drought may be related to osmotic adjustment. Control plants had more negative osmotic potentials at full turgor and higher moduli of elasticity in the late dry season.  相似文献

Various aspects of the reproductive biology of two populations of the distylous shrub Jasminum fructicans (Oleaceae) in the northwest Iberian Peninsula were studied during 1994 and 1995. This species is a 'tropical' relict of pre-Miocene origin. Two morphs (the L morph with long-style/short-pistil, and the S morph with short-style/ long-pistil) occur. Our results indicate that morph frequency ratio in the study populations is one-to-one. Experimental crosses revealed self-incompatibility, very weak within-morph compatibility and strong between-morph compatibility (in all cases as is typical of distylous species). Pollen grains are larger in S-morph plants, while both nectar reward and fruit set are higher in L-morph plants. However, no differences were detected in number of pollen grains per stamen or in pollinator spectrum (the most frequent visitors to flowers of both morphs being species of the hy-menopteran genera Anthophora, Melecta and Bombus ).  相似文献

Architecture of 19 species of Psychotria L. (Rubiaceae) was studied in Panama, principally on Barro Colorado Island. Three sets of data were gathered: 1) dynamics of normal branching events, by monitoring tagged plants; 2) dynamics of injury response, by monitoring experimental injuries; and 3) architecture of additional individuals and species, by static evaluation. Essentially three branching-event types were found, herein called Types 1, 2, and 3, each of which defines a Hallé-Oldeman (1970) whole-plant model: Chamberlain, Leeuwenberg, and Koriba, respectively. All species were found perfectly consistent with respect to architecture. Architecture appears also to be a potentially important taxonomic character at the subgeneric and species-group levels. Finally, nearly half the species examined do not fit a Hallé-Oldeman whole-plant model, often being characterized instead by a combination of branching types; three species, for instance, show Type 3 branching along the main trunk and Type 2 branching in the lateral branch complexes.  相似文献

Attempts were made to obtain bacteria-free plants of Psychotria punctata from tissue cultures. Stem explants and callus derived from them were induced to form roots but failed to form buds on Linsmaier and Skoog medium and 96 chemical modifications of it, including most of those known to induce bud formation in other species. Roots formed with ample IAA (2 mg/liter or more) and a low kinetin concentration (0.25 or 0.50 mg/liter). Adenine inhibited root formation in these media, but tyrosine did not. Tyrosine did lower the percentage of calluses commencing growth. When enzyme-hydrolyzed lactalbumin (1.3 g/liter), kinetin (0.5 mg/liter) and IAA (5 mg/liter) were added to Linsmaier and Skoog medium modified by decreasing inorganic nitrogen and increasing inorganic phosphate, callus grew at the fastest rate observed (increasing threefold in fresh weight in three weeks) and formed numerous roots. This was adopted as the stock callus medium. Casein hydrolysates also stimulated growth but less so than lactalbumin hydrolysate. When lactalbumin hydrolysate or a casein hydrolysate lacking tryptophan was supplied, growth occurred without added auxin if sufficient cytokinin was added. Cytokinin was required at unusually high concentration and was tolerated at still higher concentration. Formation, elongation, and branching of roots persisted on a saturated solution of BA which inhibited callus growth about 70 % and delayed callus senescence. Light caused earlier callus senescence after growth had ceased but did not affect callus growth or root formation. Light-induced senescence was prevented by a high cytokinin concentration.  相似文献

Earlier investigators established that a finger-like colleter with elongate axial cells and a palisade epidermis is the standard type in the Rubiaceae. This type, with some variation, also prevails in Psychotria, based on a worldwide anatomical survey of vegetative buds from herbarium specimens of 296 species (about 50 % of total). It is virtually the only type found outside of continental Africa. Among African species, it is most common in subgenus Psychotria, with mostly nodule-free species. In subgenus Tetramerae, with only leaf-nodulated species, there is a strong tendency toward brushlike and dendroid colleters in which epidermal cells are extremely elongate and separated from each other. It is speculated that this change in colleter morphology associated with presence of nodule bacteria may be correlated with a change in secretion product more suitable for support of bacteria. Three morphological forms of crystal occur: raphides, styloids, clustered crystals. They may occur singly or in combination. Several patterns and trends were noted in crystal distribution that could be of taxonomic significance.  相似文献

The evolution of male-sterile individuals in hermaphroditic species represents the first step in the evolution of sex specialization. For male-sterile individuals to persist they must have some fitness advantage that compensates for their loss of the male function. Female fecundity also depends on environmental factors as those determining the likelihood of pollination and fertilization. Here we assessed the effects of both male sterility and reproductive synchrony (an environmentally affected trait) on the magnitude of female compensation of Erythroxylum havanense, a distylous shrub with morph-biased male sterility. In vitro measurements of pollen germination showed that thrums were more male sterile than pins. The compensatory advantage of thrums changed by a factor of five depending on flowering synchrony. Flowering in synchrony with the population increased fruit production in both morphs. However, because pins that flowered out of synchrony produced almost no fruits, the reproductive compensation of thrums was higher in these circumstances. Because the magnitude of compensation is frequently considered as a key factor in the evolution of sex specialization, the environmentally induced variation in the magnitude of the reproductive compensation of thrum plants may have profound effects on the evolutionary dynamics of the reproductive system of E. havanense.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Because distylous species have two hermaphroditic style-length floral morphs, they face two sex allocation problems: the equilibrium morph ratio and the optimal allocation to pollen and seed production in each floral morph. Gender specialization is expected among distylous species when floral morphs differ in reproductive output. However, spatio-temporal variability in female reproductive output between morphs needs to be investigated to fully understand patterns of sexual expression and gender specialization in distylous plants. Between-year variation in flower and fruit production of hummingbird-pollinated Palicourea padifolia (Rubiaceae) was examined, focusing on functional gender expression of long- and short-styled morphs and comparing their reproductive performance in five consecutive years (1998-2002). METHODS: Between-year variation in inflorescence, floral bud and fruit production was monitored and quantified. These traits were then used as parameters to determine functional gender differences between floral morphs through time. KEY RESULTS: Inflorescence production varied among years but no significant differences were found between floral morphs. Long-styled plants initiated more floral buds per inflorescence every year than short-styled plants, suggesting higher allocation to pollinator attraction and, potentially, an increase in male fitness through pollen donation. Although fruit production was similar between morphs, their functional gender shifted across years. CONCLUSIONS: The gender expression inconsistency across years is surprising because a number of floral characters and attributes that contribute to differently attracting and rewarding effective pollinators in P. padifolia suggest gender specialization. The evidence that morphs of distylous species might specialize in functional gender mostly comes from differences among populations in seed production and non-equilibrium morph ratios based on 1-year field population surveys. The results suggest that more sampling through time is needed to detect gender specialization among distylous species with a perennial habit.  相似文献

Distyly, a reproductive system characterized by the presence of long-styled (thrum). and short-styled (pin) individuals within a population, has been repeatedly used as a model for the study of the evolution of the reproductive systems in plants. Erythroxylum havanense is a distylous species in which most thrum plants fail to develop a fertile androecium, thus behaving as male-sterile or partially male-sterile plants. Short-styled (thrum) individuals have an increased performance as female parents, thereby compensating for their loss of male fitness. Previous studies of populations within close proximity to each other suggest that E. havanense may be involved in a process of gender specialization in which, unlike other heterostylous species, thrum plants are specializing as females and pins (long-styled) as males. In this paper we describe more general patterns of male sterility, one of the first steps in the evolution of gender specialization, among populations of the distylous shrub Erythroxylum havanense. Pollen germination differed among populations (range 0.52 ± 0.03 to 0.06 ± 0.04), and between morphs. Pollen from pin plants was almost two times (1.89) as fertile as that from thrums (0.36 ± 0.03 and 0.19 ± 0.03, pin and thrums respectively). Thrums were significantly more male sterile in four out of five populations. The population where differences between the floral morphs were not apparent showed the lowest levels of pollen fertility. Accordingly, our results indicate that populations of E. havanense show marked differences in pollen fertility and higher male sterility associated with the thrum morph. We hypothesize that differences between morphs could be explained if restorers of male sterility are linked to the distyly haplotype, while differences in genes associated with male sterility could explain the variation among populations. Overall, the prevalence of thrum-biased male sterility across populations suggests that E. havanense is subject to a process of gender specialization.  相似文献

From December 2005 to November 2006, 216 samples were taken from the main channel of the Goiana Estuary, representing a total sampled area of 23 ha. Ariidae species were the most abundant in density (1600 individuals ha?1, 53%) and biomass (18 813 g ha?1, 63%). Cathorops spixii was the most abundant in density (1340 individuals ha?1) and biomass (14 203 g ha?1). The variables: number of species, total density and biomass, showed significant interactions between the factors of areas and seasons (P < 0·01). The highest total density (7394 individuals ha?1) and biomass (70 292 g ha?1) occurred in the middle and upper estuaries, respectively, during the early‐rainy season. The density of C. spixii differed significantly between areas and seasons (P < 0·01), while Cathorops agassizii differed significantly only between seasons (P < 0·01). The biomass differed significantly for the species C. spixii, C. agassizii and Sciades herzbergii between seasons, and C. spixii and C. agassizii between areas. Also, the density and biomass of C. spixii and C. agassizii showed interaction between areas and seasons. Only the biomass of S. herzbergii showed interaction between areas and seasons (P < 0·01). This indicates that seasonal variations influenced the distribution of Ariidae species in the different areas of the Goiana Estuary. Moreover, canonical correspondence analysis highlighted a strongly significant correlation (P < 0·01) between the seasonal variations of the environmental gradients (salinity and water temperature) and distribution of catfishes. The management and conservation of estuaries should take into account the life cycle of these species in different estuarine areas and hydrological seasons.  相似文献

Several phylogeographic studies in northern Mesoamerica have examined the influence of Pleistocene glaciations on the genetic structure of temperate tree species with their southern limit by the contact zone between species otherwise characteristic of North or South America, but few have featured plant species that presumably colonized northern Mesoamerica from South America. A phylogeographical study of Palicourea padifolia, a fleshy-fruited, bird dispersed distylous shrub, was conducted to investigate genetic variation at two chloroplast regions (trnS-trnG and rpl32-trnL) across cloud forest areas to determine if such patterns are consistent with the presence of Pleistocene refugia and/or with the historical fragmentation of the Mexican cloud forests. We conducted population and spatial genetic analyses as well as phylogenetic and isolation with migration analyses on 122 individuals from 22 populations comprising the distribution of P. padifolia in Mexico to gain insight of the evolutionary history of these populations. Twenty-six haplotypes were identified after sequencing 1389 bp of chloroplast DNA. These haplotypes showed phylogeographic structure (N(ST) = 0.508, G(ST) = 0.337, N(ST) > G(ST), P < 0.05), including a phylogeographic break at the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, with private haplotypes at either side of the isthmus, and a divergence time of the split in the absence of gene flow dating back c. 309,000-103,000 years ago. The patterns of geographic structure found in this study are consistent with past fragmentation and demographic range expansion, supporting the role of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as a biogeographical barrier in the dispersal of P. padifolia. Our data suggest that P. padifolia populations were isolated throughout glacial cycles by the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, accumulating genetic differences due to the lack of migration across the isthmus in either direction, but the results of our study are not consistent with the existence of the previously proposed Pleistocene refugia for rain forest plant species in the region.  相似文献

Electrophoretic analysis of progeny arrays was used to determine whether Ardisia escallonioides (Myrsinaceae). a self-compatible tropical understory shrub in south Florida, exhibits a mixed-mating system. Ten seedlings from seven to 16 maternal plants from four populations were analyzed using five polymorphic enzyme systems. Multilocus population out-crossing rates ranged from 0.39 to > 1, with three populations showing high levels of selfing. Both single and multilocus inbreeding coefficients (F) indicated excess homozygosity in seedlings but not adults for three of the four populations. Population outcrossing rate was not positively correlated with increased numbers of flowering plants. The importance of annual variation in population outcrossing rates is discussed with regard to the high temporal variability in seedling recruitment in this species.  相似文献
