The potential influence of pollen-tube competition on offspring “quality” has received considerable attention in recent years. Yet the prevalence of pollen competition in natural populations is largely unknown because few investigators have actually measured rates of pollen deposition on stigmas. In this study, we assess the potential for pollen-tube competition in natural populations of the self-compatible, pollinator-dependent herbaceous perennial, Hibiscus moscheutos. Individual flowers averaged two to four visits per 15 min by potential pollinators (Ptilothrix and Bombus), and about 34% of these visits involved contact with a stigma. The median number of pollen grains deposited on virgin stigmas per contact visit was 70 grains (values ranged from 0 to 889), and flowers averaged about four contact visits per hour. Approximately 360 pollen grains must reach stigmas for full seed set to occur in a typical flower (an average ovary has 139 ovules, and 2.6 pollen grains are required per seed). Within 2 and 3 hr exposure to pollinators, 65% and 97% of the flowers received excess pollen (>360 grains) and median stigmatic pollen loads exceeded the number of ovules by a factor of 4.0 and 5.4, respectively. Based on 3 yr observations, it is concluded that pollen competition may frequently occur in this species.  相似文献

Comparettia falcata is an epiphytic, neotropical orchid that produces nectar as a pollinator reward. In Puerto Rico, C. falcata is allogamous and pollinated by the endemic hummingbird Chlorostilbon maugaeus. Autogamous pollinations are possible, but may result in reduced fruit set. For the 1989 and 1990 flowering seasons, the probability of pollinarium removals and natural pollinations increased with individual inflorescence display size. However, the frequency of effective pollinator visits was independent of flowering phenology in both years. A positive correlation between inflorescence size and reproductive success occurred in 1990 but not in 1989. In 1990 plants produced longer spurs, a higher standing crop of nectar, and a more concentrated nectar than in 1989. There was no relation between nectar availability (= standing crop of nectar) and sugar concentration in either year. Nectar availability and sugar concentration did not vary among the first four flowers of an inflorescence in either season. Nectar availability was not a good predictor of effective visitation. Comparettia falcata has a higher natural fruit set than tropical deceptive orchids, suggesting that pollinator visitation may be enhanced by nectar reward. The small, dilute nectar volumes secreted by C. falcata may benefit the plant by increasing interplant pollinator movement and pollen dispersal.  相似文献

Pollen dispersal success in entomophilous plants is influenced by the amount of pollen produced per flower, the fraction of pollen that is exported to other flowers during a pollinator visit, visitation frequency, and the complementarity between pollen donor and recipients. For bumble bee-pollinated Polemonium viscosum the first three determinants of male function are correlated with morphometric floral traits. Pollen production is positively related to corolla and style length, whereas pollen removal per visit by bumble bee pollinators is a positive function of corolla flare. Larger-flowered plants receive more bumble bee visits than small-flowered individuals. We found no evidence of tradeoffs between pollen export efficiency and per visit accumulation of outcross pollen; each was influenced by unique aspects of flower morphology. Individual queen bumble bees of the principal pollinator species, Bombus kirbyellus, were similar in male, female, and absolute measures of pollination effectiveness. An estimated 2.9% of the pollen that bumble bees removed from flowers during a foraging bout was, on average, deposited on stigmas of compatible recipients. Significant plant-to-plant differences in pollen production, pollen export per visit, and outcross pollen receipt were found for co-occurring individuals of P. viscosum indicating that variation in these fitness related traits can be seen by pollinator-mediated selection.  相似文献

The pollination process in loblolly pine has been examined over several years, both in the field (seed orchards) and experimentally on greenhouse-grown material. Female strobili are receptive to pollination for periods of a wk or more. Initially, background pollen from outside the seed orchard is the main source of pollen but as peak receptivity approaches, pollen from the stand itself predominates especially in older orchards. Consequently, strobili can receive pollen both from outside the orchard as well as from within. The pollen lands on the micropylar horns where it is transferred through the micropyle onto the nucellus by either rainfall or the pollen drop, whichever comes first. Since the pollen drop does not occur until the latter part of the receptive period, rainfall is the most likely transfer agent and pollen flotation is vital if rain occurs. Early arriving pollen does not appear to have an advantage over later arriving pollen for uptake onto the nucellus, even if rain follows the first pollination immediately. Therefore, total pollination of the strobilus can result from both distant and nearby pollen sources.  相似文献

This paper describes the influence of nitrate availability on growth and release of dissolved free and combined carbohydrates (DFCHOs and DCCHOs) produced by Spondylosium pygmaeum (Cooke) W. West (Zygnematophyceae). This strain was isolated from a subtropical shallow pond, located at the extreme south of Brazil (Rio Grande, RS). Experiments were carried out in batch culture, comparing two initial nitrate levels (10/100 μM) in the medium. Growth was monitored by direct microscopic cell counts and chl a content. Nitrate consumption was determined by ion chromatography, while the production of extracellular carbohydrates was monitored by the phenol‐sulfuric method. The monosaccharide compositions of DFCHOs and DCCHOs were determined in each growth phase by HPLC with pulse amperometric detection (HPLC‐PAD). At the end of the experiment, the total composition of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) molecules >12 kDa was determined by gas chromatography. Nitrate availability had no influence on S. pygmaeum cell density at any phase. On the other hand, chl a content decreased after a few days growth when the availability of nitrate was restricted, but continued to rise when nitrate was plentiful. Also, nitrate depletion was faster at 10 μM nitrate. No influence of the growth phase or nitrate availability on the total carbohydrates (TDCHOs) released per cell was observed. Only DCCHOs were released by S. pygmaeum, and the composition varied between growth phases, especially at lower nitrate availability. EPS molecules >12 kDa were composed mainly of xylose, fucose, and galactose, as for other desmids. However, a high N‐acetyl‐glucosamine content was found, uniquely among desmid EPSs.  相似文献

Coconut trees are mostly anemophilous; however, because bees and ants forage on coconut tree inflorescences for floral food, entomophilous pollination can also occur. The aim of this study was to determine the food resource preference of bees and ants while they collect pollen, nectar and, for ants, occasionally prey on coconut tree inflorescences, as well as to evaluate their impact on self-pollination. The number of ant visits to first female and then male flowers is significantly higher than that of bees. For Apis mellifera (L.) and Pseudomyrmex gracilis (Fabricius) 14% of the sequences were favorable to direct self-pollination. The probability of visits for all of the sequences was similar for both bees and ants and there was no difference in resource choice. For these reasons, neither can be considered a more effective pollinator of the coconut tree.  相似文献

Pollen organization and morphology of the South American Chloraeinae (Orchidaceae) was examined by scanning electron microscopy and compared with that of the remainder of the otherwise Australasian Diurideae. All five genera of the Chloraeinae, Bipinnula, Chloraea, Codonorchis, Gavilea, and Geoblasta, and at least one genus from each of the other subtribes were sampled. The Australasian Diurideae are diverse in pollen organization and morphology. The two genera of the Acianthinae, Corybas and Acianthus, have very different pollen and their classification is questioned. Monad pollen organization of Pterostylis (Pterostylidinae) is reinterpreted as primitive and not secondarily derived. Pollen of the Chloraeinae is uniform in exine morphology and organization. Most species sampled have reticulate pollen which tends to be foveolate distally. The basic pollen unit of all Chloraeinae is the tetrad, except Codonorchis which possesses monads. Pollen morphology and organization of the Chloraeinae is most similar to the Caladeniinae, which supports the contention that the Chloraeinae including Codonorchis should be retained in the Diurideae.  相似文献

Floral development in Florex and Ottawa cultivars of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.: Leguminosae) was examined by scanning electron microscopy. No differences between the two cultivars were found. The terminal inflorescence is initiated in the axil of the penultimate bract before the final bract is initiated. After initiation of the final bract, the remnant apical dome is transformed to become the least mature part of the inflorescence dome. Subsequent inflorescences are initiated laterally in basipetal sequence. Inflorescence development is zygomorphic. This leads to an unusual pattern of floret initiation, the oldest florets resting basally and proximal to the penultimate bract. Florets develop with zygomorphic symmetry, each whorl of floral organs developing unidirectionally from the abaxial side. Initiation of the adaxial organ of each whorl is delayed until the abaxial organ of the succeeding whorl has been initiated. Thus there is overlapping development of the whorls of organs. The antepetalous stamens arise in close association with their respective petal primordia. As development proceeds, the corolla tube and the staminal tube exhibit basal zonal growth. In the mature flower, above the distal zone of fusion of the keel petals, marginal cells project and interlock, producing a pollination mechanism that can be sprung by the pollinator.  相似文献

The W locus, a codominant locus influencing floral pigment intensity in the tall morning glory, Ipomoea purpurea, is polymorphic throughout the southeastern United States. Previous studies suggest that this polymorphism is actively maintained by balancing selection, and that increased selfing accompanied by lack of pollen discounting (“Fisher effect”) may act to protect the white allele when it is rare. Processes that act to protect the dark allele and thus stabilize the polymorphism in conjunction with the Fisher effect have not been previously detected. The goal of this study was to determine whether any of three such processes might operate in I. purpurea. Estimates of breeding system parameters in a large experimental population in which the white allele was in higher than normal frequency (0.5) provided little evidence that either dark- or light-flowered plants were more successful as pollen parents than white-flowered plants. In addition, no evidence was found for a transmission bias favoring the dark allele in the ovules produced by light heterozygotes. In contrast, a strong transmission bias favoring the dark allele in pollen of heterozygotes was observed. A simple model using parameter estimates derived from this and previous studies indicates that a balance between the Fisher effect and biased transmission in heterozygote pollen could account for many properties of the polymorphism.  相似文献

Salt stress may impose osmotic and respiratory costs on nonhalophytes that limit the availability of carbohydrates for growth. This was examined in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) by the analysis of soluble carbohydrates, starch, and respiration rates in mature and expanding leaves from plants exposed to moderate salt stress. Plants were grown for 35 days in solution culture at 1, 37, and 75 mM NaCl under greenhouse conditions. Total carbohydrates increased in mature and expanding leaves with increasing salinity. The majority of this increase was as starch. Mature leaf respiration also increased under salt stress. The net accumulation of non-osmotically active carbohydrates in expanding leaves suggests that growth was not limited by the generation or availability of carbohydrates but rather by the ability of the plant to effectively utilize this substrate in osmotic adjustment and growth.  相似文献

We previously developed a luminescent Synechococystis sp. strain PCC 6803 cyanobacterial bioreporter that is used as a real‐time whole‐cell sensor to assess nitrate assimilatory capacity in freshwaters. Applying the bioreporter assay to Lake Superior, a system whose nitrate levels have increased 6‐fold since 1900, we investigated factors that constrain nitrate utilization in this oligotrophic system. Clean sampling methods were used to collect water from Lake Superior during spring and summer 2004, and nitrate utilization was measured by monitoring bioreporter luminescence. Bioreporter response was monitored during experiments in which the lake water was amended with nutrients and incubated under light regimes simulating integrated spring and summer mixing depths. These studies demonstrated that nitrate utilization was enhanced at most stations following addition of phosphorus (P). Moreover, at many stations, addition of iron (Fe) enhanced the P effect. Strength‐of‐effect statistical analysis provided the individual contribution of P and Fe toward stimulating bioreporter response. In general, distance from shore and season were not good predictors of nitrate assimilatory capacity. Manipulation of light flux during bioreporter experiments also showed that light intensities experienced during spring mixing are likely insufficient to saturate the rate of nitrate utilization. Overall, these data suggest that P‐limited algae are deficient in their ability to assimilate nitrate in Lake Superior. Furthermore, we suggest that a secondary limitation for Fe may occur that further constrains nitrate drawdown. Lastly, during spring, light fluxes are sufficiently low to prevent maximal nitrate utilization, even in the absence of nutrient limitation.  相似文献

The breeding system of the hedgehog cactus, Echinocereus coccineus Engelm. (Cactaceae), was studied at two sites in the northern Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico. Two distinct flower types, restricted to separate plants, were observed. One was hermaphroditic and the other male-sterile. Hand-pollinations and field observations showed them to be functionally male and functionally female, respectively. There were significant quantitative intersexual differences in floral morphology. The main pollinators of the populations studied are probably two species of halictid bee. Sex ratios based on the number of plants and flowers at the two sites did not differ significantly from 1:1. Significant differences in fruit set existed between functional female plants from the two sites. The floral dimorphism described here appears confined to eastern and northwestern populations, at the periphery of the range of E. coccineus. Floral dimorphism was not observed in three closely related species.  相似文献

We studied the relative role of inflorescence traits, flowering synchrony, and pollination context for infructescence and fruit initiation in two Spanish populations of Arum italicum, a species in which inflorescences are the pollination unit. In this species, a specialized inflorescence organ, the appendix, is important for pollinator attraction. However, the short floral longevity and the production of mostly one inflorescence per plant make its pollination potentially dependent on strong flowering synchrony and on external factors not controlled by the plant (the pollination context). The flowering period in both sites lasted >3 mo. Day-to-day variation in simultaneous antheses was high, and 11-50% of antheses occurred on days during which no pollen donor was present. Inflorescence traits, flowering synchrony, and between-plant distance all influenced infructescence and fruit initiation, but their relative importance differed between sites. In one large population, infructescence initiation was positively related to inflorescence traits; in a smaller population infructescence initiation increased with the number of donor inflorescences. In both sites, percentage of fruits initiated per infructescence was dependent on a combination of inflorescence traits, flowering synchrony, and between-plant distance. Plants producing 2-4 inflorescences had higher probability of infructescence initiation and overlapped their antheses with more plants than single-inflorescence ones.  相似文献

Urban streams globally are characterised by degraded habitat conditions and low aquatic biodiversity, but are increasingly becoming the focus of restoration activities. We investigated habitat quality, ecological function, and fish and macroinvertebrate community composition of gully streams in Hamilton City, New Zealand, and compared these with a selection of periurban sites surrounded by rural land. A similar complement of fish species was found at urban and periurban sites, including two threatened species, with only one introduced fish widespread (Gambusia affinis). Stream macroinvertebrate community metrics indicated low ecological condition at most urban and periurban sites, but highlighted the presence of one high value urban site with a fauna dominated by sensitive taxa. Light-trapping around seepages in city gullies revealed the presence of several caddisfly species normally associated with native forest, suggesting that seepage habitats can provide important refugia for some aquatic insects in urban environments. Qualitative measures of stream habitat were not significantly different between urban and periurban sites, but urban streams had significantly lower hydraulic function and higher biogeochemical function than periurban streams. These functional differences are thought to reflect, respectively, (1) the combined effects of channel modification and stormwater hydrology, and (2) the influence of riparian vegetation providing shade and enhancing habitat in streams. Significant relationships between some macroinvertebrate community metrics and riparian vegetation buffering and bank protection suggest that riparian enhancement may have beneficial ecological outcomes in some urban streams. Other actions that may contribute to urban stream restoration goals include an integrated catchment approach to resolving fish passage issues, active reintroduction of wood to streams to enhance cover and habitat heterogeneity, and seeding of depauperate streams with native migratory fish to help initiate natural recolonisation.  相似文献

Fluorescence microscopy and histological studies have been used to show that in Illicium floridanum Ellis (Illiciaceae), a primitive apocarpous angiosperm, functional syncarpy is achieved by intercarpellary growth of pollen tubes. After pollen germinates on the separate stigmatic crests of the carpellary whorl, tubes grow within the carpels obliquely down and inward toward the central floral axis which is modified as a stigmalike “apical residuum.” In a restricted shallow region around the base of the apical residuum, some pollen tubes grow out between the unfused margins of the carpels and circumferentially around the surface of the apical residuum from where they may enter neighboring carpels. Some pollen germination and tube growth also occur on the apical residuum itself. The apical residuum with its associated unfused carpel margins acts as an extragynoecial compitum for pollen tube transfer between carpels, and, as such, is believed to represent a mechanism for increasing the efficiency of seed set. The pollen tube pathway of Illicium appears to be a primitive expression of a line of evolutionary development leading to syncarpous gynoecia through stages possibly exemplified by certain members of the Trochodendraceae (lower Hamamelididae).  相似文献
