Litter quality and diversity are major factors structuring decomposer communities. However, little is known on the relationship between litter quality and the community structure of soil protists in tropical forests. We analyzed the diversity, density, and community structure of a major group of soil protists of tropical montane rainforests, that is, testate amoebae. Litterbags containing pure and mixed litter of two abundant tree species at the study sites (Graffenrieda emarginata and Purdiaea nutans) differing in nitrogen concentrations were exposed in the field for 12?months. The density and diversity of testate amoebae were higher in the nitrogen-rich Graffenrieda litter suggesting that nitrogen functions as an important driving factor for soil protist communities. No additive effects of litter mixing were found, rather density of testate amoebae was reduced in litter mixtures as compared to litterbags with Graffenrieda litter only. However, adding of high-quality litter to low-quality litter markedly improved habitat quality, as evaluated by the increase in diversity and density of testate amoebae. The results suggest that local factors, such as litter quality, function as major forces shaping the structure and density of decomposer microfauna that likely feed back to decomposition processes.  相似文献

Current urban policies are associated with deep changes in urban structures, which may impoverish urban biodiversity. A major concern is the disappearance of nesting sites for wild vertebrate species living in urban areas. New urban structures without any cracks or cavities may especially preclude cavity nesters from breeding in cities and they may cause population declines. In that context, we experimentally investigated this question in an urban exploiter bird species (the house sparrow Passer domesticus), which is dramatically declining in most European cities. To test if the lack of cavities is limiting house sparrow populations in urban areas, we equipped 11 sites along an urbanization gradient with nest boxes and we then evaluated the rate of occupancy of these nest‐boxes. This urbanization gradient was characterized by very rural places (isolated farms) and moderately urbanized areas (town of medium size, i.e. 60 000 inhabitants). Surprisingly, rural nest boxes were more occupied than urban ones, suggesting that cavity availability is probably more constraining in rural areas relative to urban ones. Therefore, our study suggests that urban house sparrow populations are probably not constrained by a lack of nesting sites in medium size cities with urban designs similar to our city of interest (Niort, western France). This hypothesis definitely needs now to be tested in further urban landscapes (e.g. large cities and urban landscapes with other architecture and management policies).  相似文献

The Elatia Mires of northern Greece are unique ecosystems of high conservation value. The mires are climatically marginal and may be sensitive to changing hydroclimate, while northern Greece has experienced a significant increase in aridity since the late twentieth century. To investigate the impact of recent climatic change on the hydrology of the mires, the palaeoecological record was investigated from three near-surface monoliths extracted from two sites. Testate amoebae were analysed as sensitive indicators of hydrology. Results were interpreted using transfer function models to provide quantitative reconstructions of changing water table depth and pH. AMS radiocarbon dates and 210Pb suggest the peats were deposited within the last c. 50 years, but do not allow a secure chronology to be established. Results from all three profiles show a distinct shift towards a more xerophilic community particularly noted by increases in Euglypha species. Transfer function results infer a distinct lowering of water tables in this period. A hydrological response to recent climate change is a tenable hypothesis to explain this change; however other possible explanations include selective test decay, vertical zonation of living amoebae, ombrotrophication and local hydrological change. It is suggested that a peatland response to climatic change is the most probable hypothesis, showing the sensitivity of marginal peatlands to recent climatic change.  相似文献

The natterjack toad (Bufo calamita) shows variation in embryonic and larval salinity tolerance across populations in southern Spain. However, its aquatic/terrestrial biphasic life cycle, together with remarkable differences in salinity tolerance between Spanish and UK freshwater populations suggest an alternative hypothesis to local adaptation. Drought resistance during the terrestrial phase and salinity tolerance during the aquatic phase are both related to osmotic stress tolerance, and if there were an association between them, one could have evolved as an exaptation from the other. To test such an association, we reared B. calamita juveniles from three populations known to differ genetically in their salinity tolerance, under either dry or humid conditions. Drought decreased growth rate, enhanced burying behaviour, and decreased foraging activity and efficiency. No significant population x treatment interaction was found for any variable, i.e. populations were equally affected by drought. These results do not support the hypothesis of a genetic association between salinity and drought tolerance.  相似文献

It is generally predicted that grazers enhance soil microbial activity and nutrient availability and promote soil bacteria in fertile ecosystems, but retard microbial activity and nutrient availability and promote soil fungi in infertile ecosystems. We tested these predictions in tundra by comparing grazing effects between fertile and infertile habitats and with/without nutrient manipulation by fertilization. Grazing decreased soil N content in fertile and in fertilized plots in infertile habitats while increased it in infertile tundra habitats, which directly opposed our prediction. We conclude that this unpredicted outcome probably resulted from nutrient transport between habitats. Also contrasting with our hypothesis, grazing increased fungal rather than bacterial abundance in fertilized plots at both habitats. In support with predictions, grazing increased microbial activity for soil C decomposition in fertile but decreased it in infertile habitats. The effect of grazing on soil C decomposition followed same patterns as grazer‐induced changes in the activity of β‐glucosidase, which is an extracellular enzyme synthesized by soil microorganisms for degrading soil cellulose. We suggest that the theoretical framework on grazer–soil interactions should incorporate microbial potential for extracellular enzyme production (‘microscale’ grazer effects) and nutrient translocation by grazers among habitats (‘macroscale’ grazer effects) as important mechanisms by which grazers influence soil processes and nutrient availability for plants at contrasting levels of habitat fertility.  相似文献

The role of phenotypic plasticity in plant invasions is among the most often discussed relationships in invasion ecology. However, despite the large number of studies on this topic, there is little consistency. Reconsideration of the role of plasticity by distinguishing two substantially distinct trait-groups, performance traits (contributing directly to fitness) and functional traits (influencing fitness indirectly), could form a more operative framework for comparative studies. In the current study we expect that invasive species benefit from being plastic in functional traits, which allows them to maintain a more constant performance across different environmental conditions compared to non-invasive alien species. We compared invasive and naturalized non-invasive alien plant species by their germination (20 species), their vegetative (10 species) and their reproductive (four species) responses to three different levels of water, light and nutrient availability in a common garden experiment. Used traits were classified into performance (germination ratio, total biomass, seed number) and functional traits (time to germination, root:shoot ratio, specific leaf area, reproductive allocation). We found that invasive and non-invasive species responded similarly to environmental factors, except for example that invasive species germinated earlier with decreasing light conditions or, surprisingly, non-invasive species reacted more intensely to increased nitrogen availability by having a superior ability to achieve greater biomass. The two groups were equally plastic in all the germination and vegetative traits measured but the reproductive traits, since higher plasticity in relative reproductive allocation and higher constancy in reproductive performance showed a pronounced relation with invasiveness.  相似文献

In 2001, Hamilton and Brown proposed a controversial hypothesis of handicap signalling to potential insect parasites as an adaptive explanation for autumn leaf colouration. In subsequent studies there has been little attention to the costs and benefits of early autumnal colour change. Yet, in an observational study by Hagen et al. (2003) it was demonstrated that birch trees [Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii Ehrhart (Betulaceae)] turning yellow early in autumn had less damage from insects chewing on leaves the subsequent summer. Here, two experiments are presented which test the mechanisms in this model. The first addresses the proposed defence of leaves of B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii by letting caterpillars of Epirrita autumnata Borkhausen (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), the birches’ most common insect parasites, choose between leaves from trees that either turned yellow late or early the foregoing autumn. The second experiment addresses whether adult female E. autumnata choose between early or late senescent (i.e., yellow or green) ‘twigs’ when ovipositing in autumn. We could not find evidence of preferences in either larvae or females, suggesting that timing of colour change in B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii is not a warning signal that elicits a response in E. autumnata.  相似文献

The effect of tree clumps on soil characteristics was investigated in a humid savanna (Lamto, Côte d'Ivoire). Soil texture and field capacity were not significantly different under tree clumps compared to open grassland. On the other hand, bulk density was lower under tree clumps, likely due to a greater soil fauna activity under the trees. The pH, available phosphorus, cation exchange capacity, total carbon and total nitrogen contents were higher under tree clumps due to greater organic matter input beneath canopies. Potential soil respiration and mineral nitrogen accumulation were also enhanced, indicating a higher potential microbial activity under tree clumps. Soil water content was slightly lower beneath canopies (from July to November only between 0 and 10 cm depth) when soil moisture was above field capacity. During the other months, no significant difference was measured.  相似文献

  • Self‐fertilisation that is delayed until after opportunities for outcrossing have ceased has been argued to provide both the reproductive assurance benefits of selfing and the genetic advantages of outcrossing. In the Campanulaceae, presentation of pollen on stylar hairs and progressive stigma curvature have been hypothesised to facilitate delayed selfing, but experimental tests are lacking. Stigma curvature is common in Campanula, a genus largely characterised by self‐incompatibility, and therefore is unlikely to have initially evolved to promote self‐fertilisation. In derived self‐compatible species, however, stigma curvature might serve the secondary function of delayed selfing.
  • We investigated delayed selfing in Triodanis perfoliata, a self‐compatible relative of Campanula. Using floral manipulation experiments and pollen tube observations, we quantified the extent and timing of self‐pollination. Further, we hypothesised that, if stigma curvature provides the benefit of delayed selfing in Triodanis, selection should have favoured retention of self‐pollen through the loss of a stylar hair retraction mechanism.
  • Results of a stigma removal experiment indicated that autonomous selfing produces partial seed set, but only some selfing was delayed. Pollen tube observations and a flower senescence assay also supported the finding of partial delayed selfing. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that pollen‐collecting hairs retract during anthesis, which may limit the extent of delayed selfing.
  • Delayed selfing appeared to be only partially effective in T. perfoliata. The stylar hair retraction in this species would seem to contradict selection for selfing. We suggest that caution and rigour are needed in interpreting floral traits as adaptive mechanisms for delayed selfing.

At the arctic archipelago of Svalbard, bare glacier surfaces are populated by microalgae like Ancylonema nordenski?ldii (Zygnematales, Streptophyta). The resulting blooms cause, due to a vacuolar pigmentation, brownish colourations of the glacier surface. This freshwater ice alga has been described from several polar and alpine glaciers; however, these reports lacked data about the ecophysiology or ultrastructure. Considering the harsh environmental conditions of the exceptional habitat, such as permanently low temperatures, exposure to high irradiation or a short vegetation period, the aim of this study was to elucidate cellular adaptations of A. nordenski?ldii. Thus, samples were collected at two glaciers in Spitsbergen. The cytoarchitecture of the cylindrical cells, which are arranged in unbranched filaments, demonstrates active cells with Golgi bodies, mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum close to the nucleus when investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The cell walls are pore less and only 90 nm thin. A. nordenski?ldii only sporadically produces oblong zygotes when two filaments conjugate. The most remarkable cytological feature is peripheral brownish vacuoles, appearing osmiophil and electron dense by TEM. Aqueous extracts of this pigmentation show a broad absorption in the visible light and in the UV. Consequently, a protection against excessive irradiation is provided. Photosynthesis measurements performed at different temperatures and light levels indicate that the metabolism is adapted to temperatures close to the freezing point as well as to high light conditions. Therefore, A. nordenski?ldii can be regarded as metabolically and cytological well adapted to live on glaciers.  相似文献

A total of 78 brownfield (post-industrial and urban) sites were surveyed for beetles between 1991 and 2001 throughout England using pitfall traps. The distribution of ground, rove and phytophagous beetle assemblages was investigated using ordination and classification analyses. Site drainage and vegetation cover had a profound effect on the distribution of ground and rove beetle assemblages but site location was also important for phytophagous beetle assemblages. A total of 182 records of 46 nationally rare and scarce species (16 ground, 10 rove and 20 phytophagous species) were generated. A number of these species are more usually associated with other, more natural habitats such as riverine sediments, sandy heaths and chalk grassland. Brownfield sites provide habitat conditions similar to more natural habitats and they may help maintain populations of some rare and scarce species. The results indicate that brownfield sites are important habitats for beetles and there is evidence that the situation is similar for other invertebrate groups. There should be no further assumptions that post-industrial and urban sites have no conservation interest.  相似文献

Biodiversity is believed to be low in regions with vegetation that has adapted to water stress. Additionally, there is little interest by authorities in establishing and expanding conservation units in these areas. In Brazil, the Caatinga and the Cerrado biomes comprise this xerophilous vegetation. In both, climate is tropical and the dry season is long and well-defined. The Caatinga is the Brazilian biome with the smallest area protected by conservation units. This study evaluates the efficacy of conservation units in the Caatinga biome based on abundance and richness of drosophilids. Flies were collected inside and outside these areas. In total, approximately 23,000 flies of 32 species were collected in six conservation and six non-conservation sites. Two non-described species occurred exclusively inside protected areas, underlining the importance of conservation efforts in the maintenance of biodiversity. Other species were recorded exclusively outside conservation areas, which emphasizes the importance of establishing and expanding conservation units in the Caatinga. Native species were significantly more abundant inside conservation units, though the richness was similar in protected and non-protected areas. Abundance of exotic species outside conservation areas was statistically different in comparison with that of native ones.  相似文献

It has recently been shown that many proteins are unfolded in their functional state. In addition, a large number of stretches of protein sequences are predicted to be unfolded. It has been argued that the high frequency of occurrence of these predicted unfolded sequences indicates that the majority of these sequences must also be functional. These sequences tend to be of low complexity. It is well established that certain types of low-complexity sequences are genetically unstable, and are prone to expand in the genome. It is possible, therefore, that in addition to these well-characterised functional unfolded proteins, there are a large number of unfolded proteins that are non-functional. Analogous to 'junk DNA' these protein sequences may arise due to physical characteristics of DNA. Their high frequency may reflect, therefore, the high probability of expansion in the genome. Such 'junk proteins' would not be advantageous, and may be mildly deleterious to the cell.  相似文献

A survey of aphids was carried out during the period 2008-2011 in different regions of Algeria by collecting and identifying aphids and their host plants. Aphids were collected from 46 host plants. Forty-six species were reported including thirty-six species which were recorded for the first time in this country and thirty species which were recorded for the first time in the Maghreb (North Africa). In this article we review the existing cytogenetic information on the polymorphic dot-like chromosomes in Trinomys iheringi, the only species in the family Echimyidae harboring them, and provide new data on the frequency, banding properties, meiotic behavior and DNA composition of these minute chromosomes. Since no individuals lacking these chromosomes have hitherto been found, one of the main properties of B chromosomes, i.e. dispensability, has not yet been tested, so that some reasonable doubt might exist on whether they are true B chromosomes. The dot-like chromosomes were also present in the twelve new individuals analyzed, showed intraindividual variation in number, most likely due to mitotic instability during development, failed to show C-bands, showed late-replication, paired among them in meiosis, but not with the large chromosomes, and appeared to be mainly composed of telomeric DNA. These results suggest that these dot-like chromosomes might actually be mitotically unstable micro B chromosomes showing very high frequency in the natural populations thus far analyzed. But, to be confident of this conclusion, individuals lacking the dot-like chromosomes should actively be searched in future research to test their dispensability.  相似文献

Summary A discussion arose in 1977 regarding the nature of the Silurian/Devonian boundary bed at Klonk, and the beds below and above it. Present revision of the stratotype sequence found that most clayey limestones display a multiple and composed rhythmic arrangement of laminae. Deposition of pelagic particles, effects of traction bottom currents, and turbidite inputs are distinguishable, however, the latter are rare. Semilithified surfaces and hardgrounds were found. The boundary bed No. 20 consists of several laminated rhythms. The Devonian base, marked by first occurrences ofMonograptus uniformis corresponds to a semilithified surface, a break in deposition for several tens to hundreds of years, and a change in direction of bottom currents. A moderately rippled set at the Devonian base is only about 1 cm thick and passes again into the horizontal laminated rhythms. The deposition of the boundary bed lasted about 1.2 to 2.0 Ka. It cannot be explained as a turbidite.  相似文献

Concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn were determined in stem wood of beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) from 3 sites in northern Germany. Distinct radial distribution patterns of the elements were observed in the xylem. Concentrations of Cd and Pb increased from the youngest, outermost annual rings towards the center of the stem. With Zn intermediate concentrations were observed in the sapwood and higher levels at the center of the stem.Temporal and spatial stability of such distribution patterns in the trunks was investigated. Wood samples taken from the same individual tree in different months of the year were analysed. Marked seasonal variations of mineral concentrations were observed. Also the shape of the distribution patterns of the elements varied with the season. Such variations were larger than those observed with samples taken simultaneously from different sides of the trunk. Furthermore, Pb concentrations in the stem showed variations with height above ground.The results indicate, that radial distribution patterns of Cd, Pb and Zn in xylem rings of beech are not stable. Biomonitoring trace element pollution levels by analysis of beech wood is, thus, questionable. To obtain a reliable historical record of pollution from tree rings, the distribution patterns should be stable over a long period of time. This basic requirement of the dendroanalytical method does not hold for the examined beech. Still, with other tree species and under more favourable conditions the dendroanalytical biomonitoring method may prove valuable.Presented as symposium paper at the V International Congress of Ecology, Yokohama, August 23–30, 1990.  相似文献

The abscisic acid (ABA)-deficient mutant of barley, Az34, exhibiteda much reduced rate of leaf expansion at a bulk density of 1.6g cm–3 as compared to the isogenic wild-type variety,Steptoe. Az34 had a consistently lower xylem sap ABA concentrationat 7 d and 14 d after emergence (DAE). The xylem sap data suggestthat ABA present at Steptoe concentrations may have a directrole in maintaining leaf expansion at the sub-critical bulkdensity (1.6 g cm–3 To test this hypothesis, additionof synthetic ABA either to the rooting environment (100 nM)or directly to the xylem sap (5 pg µl–1 to reproducethe xylem sap ABA concentrations found in Steptoe, increasedleaf expansion in Az34 to the wild-type level. Furthermore,feeding Steptoe xylem sap to Az34 produced similar effects.These experiments provide direct evidence of a positive rolefor ABA as a root-to-shoot signal which assists in maintainingleaf growth in plants experiencing subcritical levels of compactionstress. Dams and weirs strongly affect or interrupt the longitudinal connectivity of rivers, by limiting the movements of several fish species while altering and fragmenting habitats. Fishways, especially pool-type fishways, are used to diminish this impact by enabling fish to negotiate barriers. The aim of this work is to study the behaviour of a small-sized resident cyprinid fish, the Iberian chub—Squalius pyrenaicus (Günther, 1868)—within a prototype of a pool-type fishway, equipped with both surface notches and bottom orifices, and experiencing two different flow regimes, plunging and streaming. Results show that the fish tended to be more successful in their upstream movements under streaming flow and that, for this regime, the surface notch was the preferred route for upstream movements. Flow velocity patterns corroborated the results, showing that the plunging flow regime may have driven fish downstream, while the streaming flow regime may have attracted fish upstream. The plunging flow also prevented access of this surface-oriented species to the surface notch, effectively reducing the area available for transport. Thus, the streaming flow regime can be a sound option for this and other small-sized species, as it enhances fish movements through the fishway.  相似文献
