Winter CO2 CH4 and N2O fluxes on some natural and drained boreal peatlands   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
CO2 and CH4 fluxes during the winter were measured at natural and drained bog and fen sites in eastern Finland using both the closed chamber method and calculations of gas diffusion along a concentration gradient through the snowpack. The snow diffusion results were compared with those obtained by chamber, but the winter flux estimates were derived from chamber data only. CH4 emissions from a poor bog were lower than those from an oligotrophic fen, while both CO2 and CH4 fluxes were higher in theCarex rostrata- occupied marginal (lagg) area of the fen than in the slightly less fertile centre. Average estimated winter CO2-C losses from virgin and drained forested peatlands were 41 and 68 g CO2-C m–2, respectively, accounting for 23 and 21% of the annual total CO2 release from the peat. The mean release of CH4-C was 1.0 g in natural bogs and 3.4 g m–2 in fens, giving rise to winter emissions averaging to 22% of the annual emission from the bogs and 10% of that from the fens. These wintertime carbon gas losses in Finnish natural peatlands were even greater than reported average long-term annual C accumulation values (less than 25g C m–2). The narrow range of 10–30% of the proportion of winter CO2 and CH4 emissions from annual emissions found in Finnish peatlands suggest that a wider generalization in the boreal zone is possible. Drained forested bogs emitted 0.3 g CH4-C m–2 on the average, while the effectively drained fens consumed an average of 0.01 g CH4-C m–2. Reason for the low CH4. efflux or net oxidation in drained peatlands probably lies in low substrate supply and thus low CH4 production in the anoxic deep peat layers. N2O release from a fertilized grassland site in November–May was 0.7 g N2O m–2, accounting for 38% of the total annual emission, while a forested bog released none and two efficiently drained forested fens 0.09 (28% of annual release) and 0.04 g N2O m–2 (27%) during the winter, respectively.  相似文献

Increased radiative forcing is an inevitable part of global climate change, yet little is known of its potential effects on the energy fluxes in natural ecosystems. To simulate the conditions of global warming, we exposed peat monoliths (depth, 0.6 m; surface area, 2.1 m2) from a bog and fen in northern Minnesota, USA, to three infrared (IR) loading (ambient, +45, and +90 W m–2) and three water table (–16, –20, and –29 cm in bog and –1, –10 and –18 cm in fen) treatments, each replicated in three mesocosm plots. Net radiation (Rn) and soil energy fluxes at the top, bottom, and sides of the mesocosms were measured in 1999, 5 years after the treatments had begun. Soil heat flux (G) increased proportionately with IR loading, comprising about 3%–8% of Rn. In the fen, the effect of IR loading on G was modulated by water table depth, whereas in the bog it was not. Energy dissipation from the mesocosms occurred mainly via vertical exchange with air, as well as with deeper soil layers through the bottom of the mesocosms, whereas lateral fluxes were 10–20-fold smaller and independent of IR loading and water table depth. The exchange with deeper soil layers was sensitive to water table depth, in contrast to G, which responded primarily to IR loading. The qualitative responses in the bog and fen were similar, but the fen displayed wider seasonal variation and greater extremes in soil energy fluxes. The differences of G in the bog and fen are attributed to differences in the reflectance in the long waveband as a function of vegetation type, whereas the differences in soil heat storage may also depend on different soil properties and different water table depth at comparable treatments. These data suggest that the ecosystem-dependent controls over soil energy fluxes may provide an important constraint on biotic response to climate change.  相似文献

We investigate temporal changes in methane emissions over a three-year period from two peatlands in Michigan. Mean daily fluxes ranged from 0.6–68.4 mg CH4 m–2d–1 in plant communities dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, an eficaceous shrub, to 11.5–209 mg CH4 m–2d–1 in areas dominated by plants with aerenchymatous tissues, such as Carex oligosperma and Scheuchzeria palustris. Correlations between methane flux and water table position were significant at all sites for one annual cycle when water table fluctuations ranged from 15 cm above to 50 cm below the peat surface. Correlations were not significant during the second and third annual periods with smaller water table fluctuations. Methane flux was strongly correlated with peat temperatures at –5 to –40 cm (r s = 0.82 to 0.98) for all three years at sites with flora acting as conduits for methane transport. At shrub sites, the correlations between methane flux and peat temperature were weak to not significant during the first two years, but were strong in the third year.Low rates of methane consumption (–0.2 to –1.5 mg CH4 m–2 d–1 ) were observed at shrub sites when the water table was below –20 cm, while sites with plants capable of methane transport always had positive net fluxes of methane. The methane oxidizing potential at both types of sites was confirmed by peat core experiments. The results of this study indicate that methane emissions occur at rates that cannot be explained by diffusion alone; plant communities play a significant role in altering methane flux from peatland ecosystems by directly transporting methane from anaerobic peat to the atmosphere.  相似文献

The importance of floating peat to methane fluxes from flooded peatlands   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
The effect of flooding on methane (CH4) fluxes was studied through the construction of an experimental reservoir in a boreal forest wetland at the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario. Prior to flooding, the peatland surface was a small source of CH4 to the atmosphere (1.0± SD of 2.3 mg CH4 m–2 d–1). After flooding, CH4 fluxes from the submerged peat surface increased to 64±68 mg CH4 m–2 d–1 CH4 bubbles within the submerged peat caused about 1/3 of the peat to float. Fluxes from these floating peat islands were much higher (440±350 mg CH4 m–2 d–2) than from both the pre-flood (undisturbed) and the post-flood (submerged) peat surfaces. The high fluxes of CH4 from the floating peat surfaces may be explained by a number of factors known to affect the production and consumption of CH4 in peat. In floating peat, however, these factors are particularly enhanced and include decreased oxidation of CH4 due to the loss of aerobic habitat normally found above the water table of undisturbed peat and to increased peat temperatures. The extremely high fluxes associated with newly lifted peat may decrease as the islands age. However, CH4 flux rates from floating peat islands that were several years old still far exceeded those from undisturbed peat surfaces and from the water surface of a newly created reservoir.  相似文献

Summary Methane emissions were observed from knees of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) in floodplain swamps of the Ogeechee river, a blackwater river in the lower coastal plain of Georgia, USA Emissions were sampled on 10 dates from March 1988 to September 1989, with small chambers placed over single knees. Methane emission rates from individual knees averaged 0.90 mg/d, corresponding to an average of 0.14 mg m–2 d–1 for the whole floodplain. In the habitat with the highest knee density (0.42 knees/m2), the average rate was 0.55 mg m–2 d–1. Spatial patterns in emissions from knees were similar to those of overall methane emissions from the swamp surface, though because of their low density were a minor contribution (0.42%) to total methane emissions from this system.  相似文献

Methane emissions from fen,bog and swamp peatlands in Quebec   总被引:8,自引:1,他引:7
A static chamber technique was used weekly from spring thaw to winter freezing to measure methane emissions from 10 sites representing subarctic fens and temperate swamps and bogs. Rates of < 200 mg CH4 m–2 d–1 were recorded in subarctic fens: within-site emissions were primarily controlled by the evolution of the peat thermal regime, though significant releases during spring thaw were recorded at some sites. Between subarctic fens, topography and water table elevation were important controls on methane emissions, with the general sequence: pool = horizontal fen> string. Emission rates from the 2 swamp sites were lower (< 20 mg CH4 m–2 d–1 ), except during the spring thaw and when the sites were saturated. The low water table ( < 80 cm depth) in abnormally dry years reduced emission rates; rates were also low from a swamp site which had been drained and cleared of vegetation for horticulture. Methane emission rates were also low (< 5 mg CH4 m–2 d–1) from 2 ombrotrophic bog sites. Laboratory measurements of rates of methane production under anaerobic conditions and methane consumption under aerobic conditions revealed that production rates were generally highest in the surface layers (0 to 2.5 cm depth); production was high in the fens and very low in the bogs. The swamp samples were able to produce methane under anaerobic conditions, but were also able to consume methane under aerobic conditions. Annual methane emission rates are estimated to be 1 to 10 g CH4 m–2 from the fens, 1 to 4 g CH4 m–2 from the swamps and <0.2 g CH4 m–2 from the bogs and drained swamp.  相似文献

The Mer Bleue peatland is a large ombrotrophic bog with hummock-lawn microtopography, poor fen sections and beaver ponds at the margin. Average growing-season (May–October) fluxes of methane (CH4) measured in 2002–2003 across the bog ranged from less than 5 mg m−2 d−1 in hummocks, to greater than 100 mg m−2 d−1 in lawns and ponds. The average position of the water table explained about half of the variation in the season average CH4 fluxes, similar to that observed in many other peatlands in Canada and elsewhere. The flux varied most when the water table position ranged between −15 and −40 cm. To better establish the factors that influence this variability, we measured CH4 flux at approximately weekly intervals from May to November for 5 years (2004–2008) at 12 collars representing the water table and vegetation variations typical of the peatland. Over the snow-free season, peat temperature is the dominant correlate and the difference among the collars’ seasonal average CH4 flux is partially dependent on water table position. A third important correlate on CH4 flux is vegetation, particularly the presence of Eriophorum vaginatum, which increases CH4 flux, as well as differences in the potential of the peat profile to produce and consume CH4 under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. The combination of peat temperature and water table position with vegetation cover was able to explain approximately 44% of the variation in daily CH4 flux, based on 1097 individual measurements. There was considerable inter-annual variation in fluxes, associated with varying peat thermal and water table regimes in response to variations in weather, but also by variations in the water level in peripheral ponds, associated with beaver dam activity. Raised water level in the beaver ponds led to higher water tables and increased CH4 emission in the peatland.  相似文献

Nutrient benthic fluxes, as well as sediment phosphorus concentration at the open sea and coastal water stations of the Central and South Adriatic were studied during 1997–98. The fluxes were in the ranges: 0.16–2.67 mmol m–2 d–1 (silicate); –0.031–0.164 mmol m–2 d–1 (phosphate); –0.51–2.03 mmol m–2 d–1 (ammonia); and –1.32–1.62 mmol m–2 d–1 (nitrate + nitrite). Silicate flux showed a gradient from the coastal area to the open sea. Ammonia was the main nitrogen species in the flux at the estuary and bay stations, while the sum of nitrate and nitrite was predominant at the open sea stations. Relationships between phosphate and ammonia fluxes (r = 0.699, p<0.01) as well as phosphate and silicate (r = 0.529, p<0.01) were established.  相似文献

Atmospheric CO2 and CH4 exchange in peatlands is controlled by water table levels and soil moisture, but impacts of short periods of dryness and rainfall are poorly known. We conducted drying-rewetting experiments with mesocosms from an ombrotrophic northern bog and an alpine, minerotrophic fen. Efflux of CO2 and CH4 was measured using static chambers and turnover and diffusion rates were calculated from depth profiles of gas concentrations. Due to a much lower macroporosity in the fen compared to the bog peat, water table fluctuated more strongly when irrigation was stopped and resumed, about 11 cm in the fen and 5 cm in the bog peat. Small changes in air filled porosity caused CO2 and CH4 concentrations in the fen peat to be insensitive to changes in water table position. CO2 emission was by a factor of 5 higher in the fen than in the bog mesocosms and changed little with water table position in both peats. This was probably caused by the importance of the uppermost, permanently unsaturated zone for auto- and heterotrophic CO2 production, and a decoupling of air filled porosity from water table position. CH4 emission was <0.4 mmol m?2 day?1 in the bog peat, and up to >12.6 mmol m?2 day?1 in the fen peat, where it was lowered by water table fluctuations. CH4 production was limited to the saturated zone in the bog peat but proceeded in the capillary fringe of the fen peat. Water table drawdown partly led to inhibition of methanogenesis in the newly unsaturated zone, but CH4 production appeared to continue after irrigation without time-lag. The identified effects of irrigation on soil moisture and respiration highlight the importance of peat physical properties for respiratory dynamics; but the atmospheric carbon exchange was fairly insensitive to the small-scale fluctuations induced.  相似文献

Drainage of peatlands for forestry starts a succession of ground vegetation in which mire species are gradually replaced by forest species. Some mire plant communities vanish quickly following the water-level drawdown; some may prevail longer in the moister patches of peatland. Drainage ditches, as a new kind of surface, introduce another component of spatial variation in drained peatlands. These variations were hypothesized to affect methane (CH4) fluxes from drained peatlands. Methane fluxes from different plant communities and unvegetated surfaces, including ditches, were measured at the drained part of Lakkasuo mire, Central Finland. The fluxes were found to be related to peatland site type, plant community, water-table position and soil temperature. At nutrient-rich fen sites fluxes between plant communities differed only a little: almost all plots acted as CH4 sinks (−0.9 to −0.4 mg CH4 m−2 d−1), with the exception of Eriophorum angustifolium Honck. communities, which emitted 0.9 g CH4 m−2 d−1. At nutrient-poor bog site the differences between plant communities were clearer. The highest emissions were measured from Eriophorum vaginatum L. communities (29.7 mg CH4 m−2 d−1), with a decreasing trend to Sphagna (10.0 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) and forest moss communities (2.6 mg CH4 m−2 d−1). CH4 emissions from different kinds of ditches were highly variable, and extremely high emissions (summertime averages 182–600 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) were measured from continuously water-covered ditches at the drained fen. Variability in the emissions was caused by differences in the origin and movement of water in the ditches, as well as differences in vegetation communities in the ditches. While drainage on average greatly decreases CH4 emissions from peatlands, a great spatial variability in fluxes is emerged. Emissions from ditches constantly covered with water, may in some cases have a great impact on the overall CH4 emissions from drained peatlands.  相似文献

Concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in the water column and their exchange at the water/air interface were studied during the open water period in two freshwater ponds with different catchment characteristics in the northern boreal zone in Finland; either peatlands or coniferous upland forests dominated the catchment of the ponds. Both ponds were supersaturated with dissolved CO2 and CH4 with respect to the equilibrium with the atmosphere, but were close to the equilibrium with N2O. The mean CO2 efflux from the pond was higher in the peatland-dominated catchment (22 mg m–2 h–1) than in the forested catchment (0.7 mg m–2 h–1), whereas the mean CH4 emissions were similar (7.6 and 3.5 mg m–2 d–1, respectively). The fluxes of N2O were generally negligible. The higher CO2 concentrations and efflux in the pond with the peatland-dominated catchment were attributed to a greater input of allochthonous carbon to that pond from its catchment due to its higher water colour and higher total organic carbon (TOC) concentration. The water pH, which also differed between the ponds, could additionally affect the CO2 dynamics. Since the catchment characteristics can regulate aquatic carbon cycles, catchment-scale studies are needed to attain a deeper understanding of the aquatic greenhouse gas dynamics.  相似文献

Taro is a staple crop that is often grown in wetlands throughout the Indo-Pacific, but the long-term impacts of its cultivation on wetland ecosystem functions are unknown. The objective of this study was to determine how cultivating taro affects carbon cycling by comparing key pathways in a forested peatland and an adjacent cultivated taro patch. Leaves decomposed rapidly at both sites with roughly 73% remaining after 2 weeks, 53% after 8 weeks, 38% after 17 weeks, and 17% after 36 weeks. Root decomposition proceeded much more slowly with roughly 93% remaining after 2 weeks, 80% after 8 weeks, 71% after 17 weeks, and 66% after 36 weeks. Annual litterfall was 1181 g m–2 year–1 and 849 g m–2 year–1 for the forested and cultivated sites, respectively. For the two sites combined, litterfall consisted of 78% leaves, 10% reproductive material, 3% branches, and 9% miscellaneous material. Fine root biomass was greater in the forested site than the cultivated site, averaging 205 g m–2 and 34 g m–2, respectively. Fine root production was much greater in the forested than the cultivated site, averaging 226 g C m–2 year–1 and 48 g C m–2 year–1, respectively. Soil respiration averaged 99 mg C m–2 h–1 and 55 mg C m–2 h–1 at the forested and cultivated sites, respectively. We found that the major change to carbon fluxes in the cultivated site was less carbon was entering the peatland, particularly less root production. Alterations to the carbon cycle caused by cultivation would probably not be permanent, because taro patches are periodically abandoned and allowed to regenerate naturally.  相似文献

Anaerobic microbial activity in northern peat soils most often results in more carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) production than methane (CH4) production. This study examined why methanogenic conditions (i.e., equal molar amounts of CH4 production and CO2 production) prevail so infrequently. We used peat soils from two ombrotrophic bogs and from two rheotrophic fens. The former two represented a relatively dry bog hummock and a wet bog hollow, and the latter two represented a forested fen and a sedge-dominated fen. We quantified gas production rates in soil samples incubated in vitro with and without added metabolic substrates (glucose, ethanol, H2/CO2). None of the peat soils exhibited methanogenic conditions when incubated in vitro for a short time (< 5 days) and without added substrates. Incubating some samples > 50 days without added substrates led to methanogenic conditions in only one of four experiments. The anaerobic CO2:CH4 production ratio ranged from 5:1 to 40:1 in peat soil without additions and was larger in samples from the dry bog hummock and forested fen than the wet bog hollow and sedge fen. Adding ethanol or glucose separately to peat soils led to methanogenic conditions within 5 days after the addition by stimulating rates of CH4 production, suggesting CH4 production from both hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogenesis. Our results suggest that methanogenic conditions in peat soils rely on a constant supply of easily decomposable metabolic substrates. Sample handling and incubation procedures might obscure methanogenic conditions in peat soil incubated in vitro.  相似文献

Fluxes of N2O,CH4 and CO2 on afforested boreal agricultural soils   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
After drainage of natural boreal peatlands, the decomposition of organic matter increases and peat soil may turn into a net source of CO2 and N2O, whereas CH4 emission is known to decrease. Afforestation is a potential mitigation strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emission from organic agricultural soils. A static chamber technique was used to evaluate the fluxes of CH4, N2O and CO2 from three boreal organic agricultural soils in western Finland, afforested 1, 6 or 23 years before this study. The mean emissions of CH4 and N2O during the growing seasons did not correlate with the age of the tree stand. All sites were sources of N2O. The highest daily N2O emission during the growing season, measured in the oldest site, was as high as 29 mg N2O m–2d–1. In general, organic agricultural soils are sinks for methane. Here, the oldest site acted as a small sink for methane, whereas the two youngest afforested organic soils were sources for methane with maximum emission rates (up to 154 mg m–2d–1) similar to those reported for minerogenous natural peatlands. Soil respiration rates decreased with the age of the forest. The high soil respiration in the younger sites, probably resulted from the high biomass production of herbs, could create soil anaerobiosis and increase methane production. Our results show that afforestation of agricultural peat soils does not abruptly terminate the N2O emissions during the first two decades, and afforestation can even enhance methane emission for a few years. The carbon accumulation in the developing tree stand can partly compensate the carbon loss from soil.  相似文献

Drainage of waterlogged sites has been part of the normal forestry practice in Fennoscandia, the Baltic countries, the British Isles and in some parts of Russia since the early 20th century, and currently, about 15 million hectares of peatlands and other wetlands have been drained for forestry purposes. The rate of forest clear-felling on drained peatlands will undergo a rapid increase in the near future, when a large number of these forests approach their regeneration age. A small-scale pilot survey was performed at two nutrient-rich and old peatland drainage areas in southern Finland to study if forest clear-felling has significant impacts on the exchange of nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) between soil and atmosphere. The average N2O emissions from the two drainage areas during three growing seasons following clear-felling were 945 and 246 g m–2 d–1. The corresponding CH4 fluxes were –0.07 and –0.52 mg m–2 d–1. Clear-felling had impacts on the environmental factors known to affect the N2O and CH4 fluxes of peatlands, i.e. clear-felling raised the water table level and increased the peat temperature. However, no substantial changes in the fluxes of CH4 following clear-felling were observed. The results concerning N2O indicated a potential for increased emissions following clear-felling of drained peatland forests, but further studies are needed for a critical evaluation of the impacts of clear-felling on the fluxes of CH4 and N2O.  相似文献

Seasonal variation of methane emissions from a temperate swamp   总被引:6,自引:4,他引:2
Methane flux measurements were made at four sites in a freshwater temperate swamp over the 13 month period of April 1985 through May 1986. Emissions were highly variable both between sites and over time at any one site. Ebullition from sediments was an important component of methane release. Although release of methane through bubbling occurred in only 19% of the measurements made between April and June 1985, when instrumentation allowed us to separate diffusive and bubble fluxes, ebullition accounted for 34% of the total flux during this period. Methane release rates showed a strong seasonal variation, with highest emission rates observed in early spring and again in late summer, which was associated with changes in plant growth and physiology. Emission rates were partially correlated with sediment temperature, but the relationship was not straightforward, and resembled a step function. Emissions responded strongly to temperature change through the range of 10–16°C. At winter sediment temperatures between 4–9°C, CH4 flux continued at low rates (0–28 mg CH4 m–2d–1; average = 7.9 mg CH4m–2d–1) and appeared insensitive to changes in sediment temperature. Annual methane emission from three constantly flooded sites (mean water depth = 35 cm) was 43.7 +/- 7.8 gm–2 (standard error); annual flux from a bank site was 41.4 +/- 20.5 gm–2. A comparison of flux measurements from fresh and saline wetlands in the immediate area of Newport News Swamp emphasizes the importance of edaphic factors in controlling flux.  相似文献

Since information concerning the mycorrhization of endangered plants is of major importance for their potential re-establishment, we determined the mycorrhizal status of Serratula tinctoria (Asteraceae), Betonica officinalis (Lamiaceae), Drosera intermedia (Droseraceae) and Lycopodiella inundata (Lycopodiaceae), occurring at one of two wetland sites (fen meadow and peat bog), which differed in soil pH and available P levels. Root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytes (DSE) was quantified. Colonization by AMF appeared to be more frequent in the fen meadow than in the peat bog, and depended on the host plant. Roots of S. tinctoria and B. officinalis were well colonized by AMF in the fen meadow (35–55% root length) and both arbuscules and vesicles were observed to occur in spring as well as in autumn. In the peat bog, L. inundata showed a low level of root colonization in spring, when vesicles were found frequently but no arbuscules. In roots of D. intermedia from the peat bog, arbuscules and vesicles were observed, but AMF colonization was lower than in L. inundata. In contrast, the amount of AMF spores extracted from soil at the peat bog site was higher than from the fen meadow soil. Spore numbers did not differ between spring and autumn in the fen meadow, but they were higher in spring than in autumn in the peat bog. Acaulospora laevis or A. colossica and Glomus etunicatum were identified amongst the AMF spores extracted from soil at the two sites. S. tinctoria and B. officinalis roots were also regularly colonized by DSE (18–40% root length), while L. inundata was only rarely colonized and D. intermedia did not seem to be colonized by DSE at all.  相似文献

Total S concentration in the top 35 cm of Big Run Bog peat averaged 9.7 mol·g — wet mass–1 (123 mol·g dry mass–1). Of that total, an average of 80.8% was carbon bonded S, 10.4% was ester sulfate S, 4.5% was FeS2S, 2.7% was FeSS, 1.2% was elemental S, and 0.4% was SO4 2–S. In peat collected in March 1986, injected with35SSO4 2– and incubated at 4 °C, mean rates of dissimilatory sulfate reduction (formation of H2S + S0 + FeS + FeS2), carbon bonded S formation, and ester sulfate S formation averaged 3.22, 0.53, and 0.36 nmol·g wet mass–1·h–1, respectively. Measured rates of sulfide oxidation were comparable to rates of sulfate reduction. Although dissolved SO4 2– concentrations in Big Run Bog interstitial water (< 200 µM) are low enough to theoretically limit sulfate reducing bacteria, rates of sulfate reduction integrated throughout the top 30–35 cm of peat of 9 and 34 mmol·m–2·d–1 (at 4 °C are greater than or comparable to rates in coastal marine sediments. We suggest that sulfate reduction was supported by a rapid turnover of the dissolved SO4 2– pool (average turnover time of 1.1 days). Although over 90% of the total S in Big Run Bog peat was organic S, cycling of S was dominated by fluxes through the inorganic S pools.  相似文献

Changes of water table position influence carbon cycling in peatlands, but effects on the sources and sinks of carbon are difficult to isolate and quantify in field investigations due to seasonal dynamics and covariance of variables. We thus investigated carbon fluxes and dissolved carbon production in peatland mesocosms from two acidic and oligotrophic peatlands under steady state conditions at two different water table positions. Exchange rates and CO2, CH4 and DOC production rates were simultaneously determined in the peat from diffusive-advective mass-balances of dissolved CO2, CH4 and DOC in the pore water. Incubation experiments were used to quantify potential CO2, CH4, and DOC production rates. The carbon turnover in the saturated peat was dominated by the production of DOC (10–15 mmol m–2 d–1) with lower rates of DIC (6.1–8.5 mmol m–2 d–1) and CH4 (2.2–4.2 mmol m–2 d–1) production. All production rates strongly decreased with depth indicating the importance of fresh plant tissue for dissolved C release. A lower water table decreased area based rates of photosynthesis (24–42%), CH4 production (factor 2.5–3.5) and emission, increased rates of soil respiration and microbial biomass C, and did not change DOC release. Due to the changes in process rates the C net balance of the mesocosms shifted by 36 mmol m–2 d–1. According to our estimates the change in C mineralization contributed most to this change. Anaerobic rates of CO2 production rates deeper in the peat increased significantly by a factor of 2–3.5 (DOC), 2.9–3.9 (CO2), and 3–14 (CH4) when the water table was lowered by 30 cm. This phenomenon might have been caused by easing an inhibiting effect by the accumulation of CO2 and CH4 when the water table was at the moss surface.  相似文献

The organic carbon cycle of a shallow, tundra lake (mean depth 1.45 m) was followed for 5 weeks of the open water period by examining CO2 fluxes through benthic respiration and anaerobic decomposition, photosynthesis of benthic and phytoplankton communities and gas exchange at the air-water interface. Total photosynthesis (as consumption of carbon dioxide) was 37.5 mmole C m–2 d–1, 83% of which was benthic and macrophytic. By direct measurement benthic respiration exceeded benthic photosynthesis by 6.6 mmole C m–2 d–1. The lake lost 1.4 × 106 moles C in two weeks after ice melted by degassing C02, and 6.8 mmole C m–2 d–1 (1.5 × 106 moles) during the remainder of the open water period; 2.2 mmole C m2 d–1 of this was release Of CO2 stored in the sediments by cryoconcentration the previous winter. Anaerobic microbial decomposition was only 4% of the benthic aerobic respiration rate of 38 mmole C m–2 d–1. An annual budget estimate for the lake indicated that 50% of the carbon was produced by the benthic community, 20% by phytoplankton, and 30% was allochthonous material. The relative contribution of allochthonous input was in accordance with measurement of the 15N of sedimented organic matter.  相似文献
