Results are presented from archaeobotanical analyses carried out in ‘The Mirror Pit’, a rectangular pit, situated in the city of Ferrara, in Emilia Romagna—Northern Italy. The study is part of wider research focused on the Mediaeval period of this city. The pit belongs to a building which was in use from the second half of 14th to the end of 15th century a.d. The pit itself was filled with domestic rubbish during a few years in the middle of the 15th century. The layers were preserved by waterlogging and are therefore extraordinarily rich in organic remains and artifacts, among which was the beautiful spherical mirror which gave its name to the pit. Approximately 256,000 well-preserved seeds and fruits belonging to 98 species or carpological types were identified in 12 l of sediment from the different layers. Ficus carica, Brassica rapa subsp. rapa/subsp. sylvestris and Vitis vinifera subsp. vinifera prevailed. Many cultivated plants and weeds were present, together with a smaller number of wild plants of wet environments and woodlands. Altogether they provided much new information on the diet (cultivated and wild fruits, cereals and pulses, vegetables, spices and medicinal/fibre/oil plants) of the middle to upper class inhabitants of a city in Northern Italy during the Renaissance period. Peptide patterns and immunological properties of the cytoplasmic and chloroplastic -1,4-glucan phosphorylase (EC 2.4.1.1) from spinach leaves have been studied and were compared with those of phosphorylases from other sources. The two spinach leaf phosphorylases were immunologically different; a limited cross-reactivity was observed only at high antigen or antibody concentrations. Peptide mapping of the two enzymes resulted in complex patterns composed of more than 20 fragments; but no peptide was electrophoretically identical in both proteins. Approximately 13 to 15 of the fragments exhibited antigeneity but no cross-reactivity of any peptide was observed. Therefore, the two compartment-specific phosphorylase forms from spinach leaves represent isoenzymes possessing different primary structures. Peptide patterns of potato tuber and rabbit muscle phosphorylase were different from those of the two spinach leaf enzymes. Although the potato tuber phosphorylase resides in the plastidic compartment and is kinetically closely related to the chloroplastic spinach enzyme, it reacted more strongly with the anti-cytoplasmic-phosphorylase immunoglobulin G. Similar results were obtained with rabbit muscle phosphorylase. The de novo synthesis of maltose in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) was shown to be catalyzed by a maltose synthase, which converts two molecules of -d-glucose-1-phosphate (-G1P) (Km 1.5 mmol l-1) to maltose and 2 orthophosphate (Pi). This enzyme was purified 203-fold by fractionated ammonium sulfate precipitation and by column chromatography on Sepharose 6B. The addition of -G1P (15 mmol l-1) to the isolation buffer is required to stabilize the enzyme activity during the extraction and purification procedure. Molecular weight determination by gel filtration yielded a value of 95,000. -Gluconolactone, ATP and Pi are competitive inhibitors toward the substrate -G1P. The maltose synthase catalyzes an exchange of the phosphate group of -G1P with [32P] orthophosphate; this transfer reaction suggests that the synthesis of maltose occurs via a glucose-enzyme in a double displacement reaction. Caryopsis and spikelet fork remains of Dasypyrum villosum (L.) Coss. & Durieu ex P. Candargy have been recovered from a Hallstatt period archaeobotanical assemblage (ca. 900/800–450 cal. bc) in western Hungary (Carpathian basin). The presence of D. villosum has not been reported previously from any Hungarian archaeological sites, however there are accounts of its possible occurrence from the Neolithic, the Bronze and Iron Age in northern Serbia. The exact identification of the species has been hindered by its morphological similarity to wild rye and wheat species, as well as to Secale cereale L. and Triticum timopheevii Zhuk. ssp. timopheevii. D. villosum has been found growing at seven locations in Hungary during the past 100 years. Most of these occurrences do not exist today, and the species is not considered indigenous to the present Hungarian flora. The new finds of this species from an Iron Age feature dated to 702–696 cal. bc in western Hungary leave doubts as to whether it is indigenous or not, and should encourage archaeobotanists to consider the possibility of the occurrence of this species on other sites.  相似文献

Antisera were raised against two forms of -1,4-glucan phosphorylase (EC 2.4.1.1) which had been purified from leaves of Spinacia oleracea L. Immunoglobulin G preparations were isolated from the antisera, and their specificity was ensured by immunoplobulin G preparations were used for in situ localization of the two phosphorylase forms in spinach leaf thin sections by indirect immuno-fluorescence. Both enzyme forms were present in the palisade and spongy parenchyma and in the guard cells, but their intracellular distribution was complementary. One phosphorylase form (designated as the chloroplastic form) was restricted to the stromal space of chloroplasts whereas the other (the non-chloroplastic form) was present only in the cytoplasm of chloroplast-containing cells. The study of the political activism of black African diasporas in France after the independence era remains a neglected area of research. This paper fills a gap in the literature by exploring the first notable postcolonial protests in the country by sub-Saharan migrants. The struggle of black African workers against their dire housing conditions opened up a ‘cycle of collective action’ that led to the better-known Sonacotra migrant hostels (foyers) rent strike of 1975–1980. Even before the Sonacotra strike, however, black African workers had been able to call on the authorities from both their origin and residence countries and to mobilize transnational networks in order to support their demands. This article provides the first comprehensive historical study of this decisive period. It highlights how ethnic ties are intertwined with political and social ones, focusing on the solidarities that these migrants developed in political networks and in their neighbourhoods.  相似文献

Aims

In spite of the important role played by herbivory in plant community structure and the fact that it constitutes one of the most important ecological disturbance processes in the dynamics of both natural and anthropic systems, few studies have concentrated on the consequences of browsing on vegetation spatial patterns. The main objective of this study was to examine the role of domestic livestock pressure in the spatial distribution pattern and interspecific competition of two sand dune shrubs: Retama monosperma and the endangered species Thymus carnosus.

Methods

We compared three areas featuring different intensities of livestock pressure. Two 25 × 25 m plots were established in each study area, and the crown heights, diameters and x, y coordinates of every individual in each plot were recorded.

Results

Livestock activity produced a considerable effect, not only on plant cover and size (larger and higher crowns of both species in non herbivory plots) but also on spatial pattern. Whereas light herbivory lead to a random spatial pattern for both species, high herbivory resulted in a repulsion one.

Conclusions

Under high and no livestock pressure, T. carnosus is displaced by R. monosperma, creating a repulsion point pattern distribution between the two species. However, when livestock disturbance was low, our data reveal relatively higher T. carnosus cover values than in the other livestock pressure scenarios, along with a random distribution pattern.  相似文献

Plants of Dianthus carthusianorum from a calamine (zinc–lead) waste heap and from unpolluted stands were compared in the field and under controlled laboratory conditions. It was found that the waste-heap plants differed significantly from those in the normal population in respect to the following morphological traits: lower weight of aerial parts, shorter and narrower leaves, smaller number of leaves per plant. In combination with shorter, less numerous shoots, these features reduce the transpiration area of the plants. The general habit (predominance of forms with short and trailing shoots) of the waste-heap population points to adaptation to a xeric environment. Under controlled conditions all of the above traits were maintained through three successive generations. They are thus genetically controlled. Root tolerance tests showed that the waste-heap plants had higher tolerance to zinc and lead. These results indicate that strong selection processes have generated a clear ecotypical differentiation for heavy metal tolerance and drought tolerance in a zinc–lead-rich waste-heap population of D. carthusianorum (variety).  相似文献

Abundant and diverse Prunus fruitstone remains from cherries, plums, sloes, peaches, etc. are frequently recovered from archaeological waterlogged contexts such as wells, latrines, lake dwellings etc. in Europe. The distinction between most of the Prunus species, based on traditional morphological characters of the fruit stones, is usually not problematic. However the discrimination between P. avium L., P. cerasus L. and related cherry species, based on classical criteria alone, often turns out to be ambiguous because of the increasing number of varieties which have been bred since Roman times. By combining geometric and traditional morphometrical approaches, the overall variation in shape and size of stones from French and Swiss excavations dating from the 1st century to the 16th century a.d. were assessed. Among these important archaeobotanical data, the detailed examination of 100 waterlogged stones from the 16th century H?tel-Dieu cesspit at Tours, France, revealed that the morphological diversity is structured into two distinct morphotypes which diverge mainly according to geometrical features. Finally, the comparison between morphological features of these well-preserved archaeological stones and modern reference material including P. avium, P. cerasus and P. × gondouinii, suggests that these two morphotypes, which have been initially attributed to P. avium (long stones) and P. avium/cerasus (rounded stones) according to traditional morphological parameters, would correspond to two different cultivated varieties, both belonging to Prunus avium. Results presented in this work constitute new and preliminary data obtained during the development of this project that throw light on morphological variability and biosystematic aspects.  相似文献

Within the framework of the Sicily Mummy Project, the orofacial complex of a significant sample of individuals (n = 111) from the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Italy, was inspected. The heads and dentitions of the mummies were documented and the recorded findings described: the state of preservation of skeletal and soft tissues; dental pathologies such as carious lesions and alveolar bone loss; enamel hypoplasia; and ante- and post-mortem tooth loss. Despite limitations in data collection, the oral health of these mummies was assessed and the frequencies of pathologies were compared to those of similar populations. From their position within the corridors of the Catacombs, sex and social status of the mummies were also inferred, allowing the dental pathologies to be specified in the social and historical context. Most interestingly, the rate of oral health problems did not differ between the groups of the members of the Capuchin Order and the laymen of the city of Palermo, despite their different lifestyles.  相似文献

Pollen counts in Burgundy were monitored by means of four Hirst volumetric traps. Their analysis revealed a sharp rise of Ambrosia from 1996 to 1997. The minimum amount of ragweed pollen likely to provoke allergies (13 grains m–3) was reached or exceeded several days every year, but without leading to clinical symptoms. The circadian variation of Ambrosia pollen showed two peaks: the first one in the morning was suggested to coincide with local pollination, although the second one, in the afternoon, seemed to result from a long range transport which was confirmed by the study of wind roses.  相似文献
