When excised wheat roots are exposed to blue light, catalase activity changes in a way to he expected as a result of photodestruction with first order kinetics. Wheat root catalase in vivo is less light sensitive than animal catalase in vitro, possibly due to internal screening. Illumination of the roots with red light causes some increase in catalasc activity. Peroxidase activity is much less affected by light. No relation has been found between catalase destruction and chlorophyll formation. The ability of roots to oxidize pyrogallol to purpurogallin (by other workers interpreted as peroxide production) is decreased by light, especially blue light. On the contrary, one peroxide producing enzyme, glycolic acid oxidase, was detected only in roots grown in blue light. The total flavin content, or the fraction present as FAD, is not affected by light. The ascorbic acid content is low, but slightly increased by blue light.  相似文献

Abstract A growth model for reproductive energy allocation pattern and schedule is proposed. Assumptions are as follows: (1) the assimilation rate for an individual is given by a logistic curve of vegetative dry weight; (2) size variability is expressed by the parameter W of the logistic curve (asymptotic value of vegetative dry weight); (3) a plant controls allocation of the assimilate to vegetative and reproductive structures so as to maximize the reproductive energy investment at the end of the growth period. The models were analyzed in comparison with field and experimental observations and gave reasonable explanations for the reproductive allocation pattern of individuals which reflects ecological preferences and life history characteristics, such as environmental conditions of habitats (stable or changing), length of life span (annual, biennial or perennial) and growth form (erectophile or planophile). Decreasing RA (reproductive allocation) with individual size and delayed switchover time from vegetative to reproductive growth were found in plants which occur in stable environments and have a more or less fixed growth period; in those which occur in changing environments where growth period depends on individual size, RAs that remain constant or increase with variations in individual size and early switchover time were detected. Most perennials conform to the former case, but annuals and biennials conform to the latter case. Under extremely overcrowded conditions, planophiles, which are much more subject to crowding effect than erectophiles, tend to have increasing RA with increasing size, while erectophiles tend to have almost constant RA irrespective of size. These trends are discussed in the light of the life history characteristics and ecological distribution of plant species studied.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine a physiological basis for competitive differences between Senecio vulgaris L. biotypes which are either resistant or susceptible to triazine herbicides. Net carbon fixation of intact leaves of mature plants was higher at all light intensities in the susceptible biotype than in the resistant biotype. Quantum yields measured under identical conditions for each biotype were 20% lower in the resistant than in the susceptible biotype. Oxygen evolution in continuous light measured in stroma-free chloroplasts was also higher at all light intensities in the susceptible biotype than in the resistant biotype. Oxygen evolution in response to flashing light was measured in stroma-free chloroplasts of both biotypes. The steady-state yield per flash of resistant chloroplasts was less than 20% that of susceptible chloroplasts. Susceptible chloroplasts displayed oscillations in oxygen yield per flash typically observed in normal chloroplasts, whereas the pattern of oscillations in resistant chloroplasts was noticeably damped. It is suggested that modification of the herbicide binding site which confers s-triazine resistance may also affect the oxidizing side of photosystem II, making photochemical electron transport much less efficient. This alteration has resulted in a lowered capacity for net carbon fixation and lower quantum yields in whole plants of the resistant type.  相似文献

目的 动物的生长繁殖性能是其生理学数据的重要组成部分 ,对实验动物的开发和应用具有指导意义。方法 选择离乳的长爪沙鼠 80只 (雌雄各半 ) ,一雌一雄长期同居。结果 每胎产仔 3~ 7只的居多 ,占总胎数的 77% ;平均每胎产仔 (5 .0 2± 2 .1 1 )只 ;每年产仔胎数 5~ 9胎的较多 ,占总胎数的 91 .7% ,平均 (7.4 9± 2 .0 1 )胎 /年 ;最早的初产周龄为 1 3周龄 ,最长的 5 2周龄 ,在 1 3~ 2 0和 2 5~ 2 8周龄的居多 ,占总对数的 80 %。长爪沙鼠的平均出生重为 3.5g ,成年鼠平均体重雌性 5 5 .6g ,雄性 6 7.2g。结论 普通级长爪沙鼠封闭群配种日龄最早在 6 5日龄 ,初产日龄超过 2 0 0日龄的长爪沙鼠应淘汰 ;性别对长爪沙鼠体重无显著影响  相似文献

Seselin, a natural coumarin derivative isolated from citrus roots, inhibited radicle growth in seedlings of cucumber (Cucumis sativa), lettuce (Lactuca sativum), radish (Raphanus sativus), and wheat (Triticum aestivum) grown in the dark. Coumarin similarly inhibited radicle growth of cucumber seedlings. Growth retardation of the cucumber radicles was accompanied by an increased activity of peroxidase and indole-3-acetic acid oxidase. Both compounds antagonized indole-3-acetic acid-induced growth of wheat coleoptiles, whereas coumarin was much less effective than seselin in antagonizing gibberellic acid-induced release of reducing sugars from barley endosperm. It is suggested that seselin plays an important role in the regulation of root growth, and that it is the indole-3-acetic acid oxidase cofactor previously detected in citrus roots.  相似文献

The present study compares the binding and inhibitory activity of two photosystem II inhibitors: 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (diuron [DCMU]) and 2-chloro-4-(ethylamine)-6-(isopropyl amine)-S-triazene (atrazine). Chloroplasts isolated from naturally occurring triazine-susceptible and triazine-resistant biotypes of common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L.) showed the following characteristics. (a) Diuron strongly inhibited photosynthetic electron transport from H2O to 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol in both biotypes. Strong inhibition by atrazine was observed only with the susceptible chloroplasts. (b) Hill plots of electron transport inhibition data indicate a noncooperative binding of one inhibitor molecule at the site of action for both diuron and atrazine. (c) Susceptible chloroplasts show a strong diuron and atrazine binding (14C-radiolabel assays) with binding constants (K) of 1.4 × 10−8 molar and 4 × 10−8 molar, respectively. In the resistant chloroplasts the diuron binding was slightly decreased (K = 5 × 10−8 molar), whereas no specific atrazine binding was detected. (d) In susceptible chloroplasts, competitive binding between radioactively labeled diuron and non-labeled atrazine was observed. This competition was absent in the resistant chloroplasts.  相似文献

Two Phaseolus vulgaris L. cultivars were grown at 20/15, 25/20,and 30/25 °C day/night temperatures in growth chambers witha 16 h thermoperiod corresponding to the photoperiod. When thefirst trifoliolate leaf was fully expanded rates of CO2 exchange(CER) were measured at 27 °C and saturating light usinginfrared gas analysis. Stomatal (rs) and mesophyll resistances,CO2 compensation points, activities of the enzymes ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase), glycolate oxidase (GAO),malate dehydrogenase (MDH), and fructose-1, 6 diphosphate (FDP),chlorophyll content, Hill activities, and leaf anatomy at boththe light and electron microscope level were also investigatedin these leaves. Rates of CO2 exchange in the light, transpiration rate, andchlorophyll content increased with increasing growth temperaturewhile leaf thickness, specific leaf weight, RuBPCase activity,compensation point, and stomatal resistance decreased. Mesophyllresistance also decreased when calculated assuming zero chloroplastCO2 concentration (rm, o), but not when calculated assuminga chloroplast CO2 concentration equal to the CO2 compensationconcentration (rm, g). Average leaf size was maximal in 25/20°C plants while dark respiration, MDH activity, stomataldensity, and starch were minimal. The activities of GAO andFDP and Hill activity were not affected by temperature pretreatment.  相似文献

British populations of Senecio vulgaris frequently contain two common capitulum morphs (radiate and non-radiate) and one rare intermediate morph. The radiate morph shows a higher maternal rate of intermorph outcrossing than the non-radiate morph and due to the ‘cost of outcrossing’ should decline in frequency, ultimately to be lost from a population. To determine whether the radiate morph exhibits some inherent advantage in fitness to offset the ‘cost of outcrossing’, a comparison was made of the survivorship and fecundity of the radiate and non-radiate morphs raised in pure stands and 1 : 1 mixture at three planting dates (autumn 1983, and spring and autumn 1984). Plants in stands established in spring 1984 were harvested in late August 1984, while plants in stands established in autumn overwintered before being harvested the following summer. In spring planted stands, the two morphs exhibited equivalent survivorships, while the fecundity of the non-radiate morph tended to be greater than the radiate morph. In autumn planted stands, survivorship and Net Reproductive Output (survivorship × fecundity) of the non-radiate morph was greater than that of the radiate morph in mixture, and also in pure stands established in 1983. In no instance was the Net Reproductive Output of either morph significantly greater in mixture than in pure stand. Density had a contrasting effect on morph survivorship and fecundity in the spring and autumn 1984 planted stands. Whereas, in spring stands, fecundity was subject to compensating density dependent regulation while survivorship was density independent, the opposite trend was observed in autumn planted stands. It is concluded that under the conditions of the experiments, the radiate morph exhibited no fitness advantage which might offset the inherent disadvantage it suffers in natural polymorphic populations due to the ‘cost of outcrossing’.  相似文献

Abstract In the absence of inhibitory concentrations of copper, the photoautotrophic growth of Chlorella vulgaris INETI58C at 27°C exhibited a higher specific growth rate and reached a higher maximal concentration of biomass, under irradiance of 150 W m−2, compared with 100 W m−2. However, when the mineral growth medium was supplemented with CuSO4 (range 40–80 μM), algal growth was significantly affected at the higher light intensity. In the presence of Cu2+, the increase in dry biomass was uncoupled from the increase in cell concentration since more than 16 autospores gathered together, inside the enlarged mother cell, suggesting that copper arrested the normal bursting of the mother cell wall. At the higher irradiance, growth medium supplementation with 80 μM of CuSO4 led to bleaching of photosynthetic pigments. No growth was observed, while, under the lower irradiance, growth was only slightly inhibited. Results clearly showed that copper toxicity to growth of C. vulgaris was strongly influenced by light intensity. Higher light intensity elicits lethal or sublethal Cu2+ damage at concentrations lower than the threshold level for damage at lower light intensities. Cu2+ may elicit lethal or sublethal light damage at irradiances lower than the threshold level for unpolluted aquatic systems. Received: 17 January 1997; Accepted 15 April 1997  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of uptake, partitioning and redistributionof dry matter, N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cuby the cormaceous plant Ixia flexuosa were studied in pot cultureat Perth, Western Australia. Dry matter and P, N, K, Zn andCu were redistributed from the mother corm with about 90 percent net efficiency: there was no net redistribution of Ca,Na, Fe or Mn. The efficiency of redistribution from the leafyshoot to fruits and the new season's corm was 80 per cent forN and P, 24–49 per cent for K, Cu and Zn, and 0–15per cent for Na, Fe, Ca, Mn, Cl, Mg, S and dry matter. Redistributionfrom the mother corm and vegetative organs could have suppliedthe replacement corm, cormlets and fruits with 32–53 percent of their S, K, P, N, Cu and Zn, and 11–25 per centof their Ca, Cl, Mn, Mg and dry matter. The mature replacementcorm had over 60 per cent of the plant's N and P, 25–50per cent of its dry matter, Zn, Cu, Mg, K and Cl, but less than20 per cent of its Ca, Na, Fe and Mn. Each plant produced anaverage of 12 cormlets; these had 35 per cent of the dry matterand 23–47 per cent of the amount of a particular nutrientin the new season's corms. Fruits had less than 16 per centof the dry matter and each mineral in the mature plant. Ratesof mineral intake by Ixia were much lower than reported forcrop plants, and may be related to the long growing season ofthe species. Results are reported for two experiments in which bean plantswere grown in a range of daylengths from i hour to continuousillumination at temperatures of 15° C and 25° C. Markeddifferences in total leaf area and in areas of individual leaveswere found, and these are related in a quadratic fashion withtotal radiation received per day. With high levels of radiationa decrease in leaf area was noted, and this is not explicablein terms of a simple nutritional hypothesis. There are pronouncedeffects of total radiation on specific leaf area but the mechanismby which these effects are brought about is not clear. The mostimportant influence of temperature on the expansion of the leafsurface appear to be: firstly, by controlling the rate at whichleaves unfold from the stem apex; and secondly, by controllingthe partition of dry matter between the leaves and the restof the plant. Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L.), healthy or infected with therust fungus Puccinia lagenophorae Cooke, was grown at a rangeof nutrient concentrations in sand culture. There were statisticallysignificant interactions between the effects of infection andnutrient supply upon the dry weights of stems, leaves, rootsand reproductive tissues, leaf area and cumulative capitulumproduction. This interaction occurred since infection causedsignificant inhibitions of growth only at moderate or high nutrientconcentrations. At low concentrations rusted plants were similarto or slightly larger than controls. Both in controls and rustedplants root: shoot ratios increased as nutrient supply declined.The ratio of root: shoot dry weight was consistently reducedby infection whilst root length: leaf area ratio was relativelyunchanged. More detailed investigations confirmed that infection had littleeffect on plant growth under nutrient deficient conditions despitesuppression of the host's ability to increase root: shoot ratiosin response to nutrient stress. This reflected the inhibitionof relative growth rates in rusted plants at high but not lownutrient concentrations, which in turn reflected reduced netassimilation rates (NAR). Excised primary roots of Phaseolus vulgaris L. were treated with canavanine and the effect on arginine utilization was studied. Arginine utilization was observed to be depressed to a low level by canavanine (1.8 × 10?4M) in rapidly dividing and growing tissues. In addition, canavanine inhibited arginine utilization to a lesser degree in root sections composed of mature and non-dividing tissues. This demonstrated that canavanine inhibition is not limited to those tissues where active DNA synthesis occurs. Canavanine was observed to inhibit the onset of mitosis in primary roots as evidenced by a significant reduction of the frequency of mitotic figures. In addition, this amino acid was found to affect the course of mitosis once it was initiated by altering the relative frequency of mitotic stages, decreasing the percentage of prophase figures and increasing the percentage observed in the telophase. An influence on the rate of spiralization and despiralization of the chromosomes is suggested. The effects on mitosis are probably related to growth-inhibitory and toxic effects of canavanine. The possible function of canavine as an allelopathic substance is hypothesized.  相似文献
