Three types of receptive fields (RF) were revealed in the studies of mechanisms of spatial-frequency filtration in the cat's visual cortex. The spatial-frequency selectivity of RF of the first type (mainly simple fields) manifests itself in a narrow range of the gratings orientations close to the preferable one, being absent beyond this range. Two other types of RF (mainly complex and hypercomplex ones) are selective to the spatial frequencies at any gratings orientation. At such gratings orientation RF of one type respond with frequency-selective inhibition, RF of another--with frequency-selective excitation. For the majority of RF the two-dimensional spatial-frequency selectivity is realized at short lengths of gratings at which the orientation selectivity of RF is not manifested. A conclusion is drawn that the twodimensional spatial-frequency filters are not Fourier filters.  相似文献

The neural substrate of the phenomenological experience of a stable visual world remains obscure. One possible mechanism would be to construct spatiotopic neural maps where the response is selective to the position of the stimulus in external space, rather than to retinal eccentricities, but evidence for these maps has been inconsistent. Here we show, with fMRI, that when human subjects perform concomitantly a demanding attentive task on stimuli displayed at the fovea, BOLD responses evoked by moving stimuli irrelevant to the task were mostly tuned in retinotopic coordinates. However, under more unconstrained conditions, where subjects could attend easily to the motion stimuli, BOLD responses were tuned not in retinal but in external coordinates (spatiotopic selectivity) in many visual areas, including MT, MST, LO and V6, agreeing with our previous fMRI study. These results indicate that spatial attention may play an important role in mediating spatiotopic selectivity.  相似文献

To what extent are the left and right visual hemifields spatially coded in the dorsal frontoparietal attention network? In many experiments with neglect patients, the left hemisphere shows a contralateral hemifield preference, whereas the right hemisphere represents both hemifields. This pattern of spatial coding is often used to explain the right-hemispheric dominance of lesions causing hemispatial neglect. However, pathophysiological mechanisms of hemispatial neglect are controversial because recent experiments on healthy subjects produced conflicting results regarding the spatial coding of visual hemifields. We used an fMRI paradigm that allowed us to distinguish two attentional subprocesses during a visual search task. Either within the left or right hemifield subjects first attended to stationary locations (spatial orienting) and then shifted their attentional focus to search for a target line. Dynamic changes in spatial coding of the left and right hemifields were observed within subregions of the dorsal front-parietal network: During stationary spatial orienting, we found the well-known spatial pattern described above, with a bilateral hemifield representation in the right hemisphere and a contralateral preference in the left hemisphere. However, during search, the right hemisphere had a contralateral preference and the left hemisphere equally represented both hemifields. This finding leads to novel perspectives regarding models of visuospatial attention and hemispatial neglect.  相似文献

We address how spatial frequency selectivity arises in Macaque primary visual cortex (V1) by simulating V1 with a large-scale network model consisting of O(104) excitatory and inhibitory integrate-and-fire neurons with realistic synaptic conductances. The new model introduces variability of the widths of subregions in V1 neuron receptive fields. As a consequence different model V1 neurons prefer different spatial frequencies. The model cortex has distributions of spatial frequency selectivity and of preference that resemble experimental findings from the real V1. Two main sources of spatial frequency selectivity in the model are the spatial arrangement of feedforward excitation, and cortical nonlinear suppression, a result of cortical inhibition. Given that both auditory and visual systems have anatomically separate object identification ("what") and spatial ("where") pathways, it is of interest whether attention-driven cross-sensory modulations occur separately within these feature domains. Here, we investigated how auditory "what" vs. "where" attention tasks modulate activity in visual pathways using cortically constrained source estimates of magnetoencephalograpic (MEG) oscillatory activity. In the absence of visual stimuli or tasks, subjects were presented with a sequence of auditory-stimulus pairs and instructed to selectively attend to phonetic ("what") vs. spatial ("where") aspects of these sounds, or to listen passively. To investigate sustained modulatory effects, oscillatory power was estimated from time periods between sound-pair presentations. In comparison to attention to sound locations, phonetic auditory attention was associated with stronger alpha (7-13 Hz) power in several visual areas (primary visual cortex; lingual, fusiform, and inferior temporal gyri, lateral occipital cortex), as well as in higher-order visual/multisensory areas including lateral/medial parietal and retrosplenial cortices. Region-of-interest (ROI) analyses of dynamic changes, from which the sustained effects had been removed, suggested further power increases during Attend Phoneme vs. Location centered at the alpha range 400-600 ms after the onset of second sound of each stimulus pair. These results suggest distinct modulations of visual system oscillatory activity during auditory attention to sound object identity ("what") vs. sound location ("where"). The alpha modulations could be interpreted to reflect enhanced crossmodal inhibition of feature-specific visual pathways and adjacent audiovisual association areas during "what" vs. "where" auditory attention.  相似文献

The extent to which brain functions are localized or distributed is a foundational question in neuroscience. In the human brain, common fMRI methods such as cluster correction, atlas parcellation, and anatomical searchlight are biased by design toward finding localized representations. Here we introduce the functional searchlight approach as an alternative to anatomical searchlight analysis, the most commonly used exploratory multivariate fMRI technique. Functional searchlight removes any anatomical bias by grouping voxels based only on functional similarity and ignoring anatomical proximity. We report evidence that visual and auditory features from deep neural networks and semantic features from a natural language processing model, as well as object representations, are more widely distributed across the brain than previously acknowledged and that functional searchlight can improve model-based similarity and decoding accuracy. This approach provides a new way to evaluate and constrain computational models with brain activity and pushes our understanding of human brain function further along the spectrum from strict modularity toward distributed representation.  相似文献

Background

Visual processing network is one of the functional networks which have been reliably identified to consistently exist in human resting brains. In our work, we focused on this network and investigated the intrinsic properties of low frequency (0.01–0.08 Hz) fluctuations (LFFs) during changes of visual stimuli. There were two main questions to be discussed in this study: intrinsic properties of LFFs regarding (1) interactions between visual stimuli and resting-state; (2) impact of repetition rate of visual stimuli.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We analyzed scanning sessions that contained rest and visual stimuli in various repetition rates with a novel method. The method included three numerical approaches involving ICA (Independent Component Analyses), fALFF (fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuation), and Coherence, to respectively investigate the modulations of visual network pattern, low frequency fluctuation power, and interregional functional connectivity during changes of visual stimuli. We discovered when resting-state was replaced by visual stimuli, more areas were involved in visual processing, and both stronger low frequency fluctuations and higher interregional functional connectivity occurred in visual network. With changes of visual repetition rate, the number of areas which were involved in visual processing, low frequency fluctuation power, and interregional functional connectivity in this network were also modulated.

Conclusions/Significance

To combine the results of prior literatures and our discoveries, intrinsic properties of LFFs in visual network are altered not only by modulations of endogenous factors (eye-open or eye-closed condition; alcohol administration) and disordered behaviors (early blind), but also exogenous sensory stimuli (visual stimuli with various repetition rates). It demonstrates that the intrinsic properties of LFFs are valuable to represent physiological states of human brains.  相似文献

Pattern electroretinograms (P-ERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to 4 Hz alternating square-wave gratings were simultaneously recorded in 23 subjects. Responses were Fourier analyzed and amplitude and phase of the 2nd and 4th temporal harmonics were measured. The spatial frequency-amplitude function of the P-ERG 2nd harmonic component displayed either a bandpass tuning behavior, or a low-pass behavior. The peak amplitude for subjects with bandpass tuning was at 1.5 c/deg. The phase of the P-ERG 2nd harmonic decreased monotonically as spatial frequency increased. The VEP 2nd harmonic had a bimodal spatial frequency function with a peak at 3 c/deg and a second increase at spatial frequencies below 1 c/deg, regardless of the P-ERG characteristics. The phase of VEP 2nd and 4th harmonic had an inverted U-shaped function with peak at 3 c/deg and 1.5 c/deg respectively.Comparison of simultaneously recorded P-ERG and VEP spatial frequency functions demonstrated different tuning behavior for cortical and retinal responses. It is concluded that the proposed technique permits the separate analysis of retinal and cortical processing of visual information. The 2nd and 4th harmonic components of VEP behave independently of each other suggesting they may be generated by different subsystems.  相似文献

Unit responses of the inferior colliculi of anesthetized albino rats to frequency-modulated stimuli were studied. The number of spikes and the pattern and duration of the unit discharges in response to frequency modulation in different directions were shown to depend on the depth and rate of modulation. With a change in the rate of frequency modulation the number of spikes in the discharge of individual neurons could increase, decrease, or remain constant. Neurons of the inferior colliculi give their material discharge at different rates of frequency modulation. A change in the depth and rate of modulation did not change the sensitivity of most neurons to the direction of the frequency change in the stimulus within the frequency range corresponding to the center of the excitatory zone of the unit response.  相似文献

Striate cells showing linear spatial summation obey very general mathematical inequalities relating the size of their receptive fields to the corresponding spatial frequency and orientation tuning characteristics. The experimental data show that, in the preferred direction of stimulus motion, the spatial response profiles of cells in the simple family are well described by the mathematical form of Gabor elementary signals. The product of the uncertainties in signalling spatial position (x) and spatial frequency (f) has, therefore, a theoretical minimum value of xf=1/2. We examine the implications that these conclusions have for the relationship between the spatial response profiles of simple cells and the characteristics of their spatial frequency tuning curves. Examples of the spatial frequency tuning curves and their associated spatial response profiles are discussed and illustrated. The advantages for the operation of the visual system of different relationships between the spatial response profiles and the characteristics of the spatial frequency tuning curves are examined. Two examples are discussed in detail, one system having a constant receptive field size and the other a constant bandwidth.  相似文献

Gamma rhythms in many brain regions, including the primary visual cortex (V1), are thought to play a role in information processing. Here, we report a surprising finding of 3 narrowband gamma rhythms in V1 that processed distinct spatial frequency (SF) signals and had different neural origins. The low gamma (LG; 25 to 40 Hz) rhythm was generated at the V1 superficial layer and preferred a higher SF compared with spike activity, whereas both the medium gamma (MG; 40 to 65 Hz), generated at the cortical level, and the high gamma HG; (65 to 85 Hz), originated precortically, preferred lower SF information. Furthermore, compared with the rates of spike activity, the powers of the 3 gammas had better performance in discriminating the edge and surface of simple objects. These findings suggest that gamma rhythms reflect the neural dynamics of neural circuitries that process different SF information in the visual system, which may be crucial for multiplexing SF information and synchronizing different features of an object.

Gamma rhythms in many brain regions are thought to play a role in information processing. This study reports the surprising coexistence of three narrow-band gamma rhythms in visual cortex with distinct coding properties for visual features and distinct neural origins.  相似文献

Phase-of-firing coding of natural visual stimuli in primary visual cortex   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We investigated the hypothesis that neurons encode rich naturalistic stimuli in terms of their spike times relative to the phase of ongoing network fluctuations rather than only in terms of their spike count. We recorded local field potentials (LFPs) and multiunit spikes from the primary visual cortex of anaesthetized macaques while binocularly presenting a color movie. We found that both the spike counts and the low-frequency LFP phase were reliably modulated by the movie and thus conveyed information about it. Moreover, movie periods eliciting higher firing rates also elicited a higher reliability of LFP phase across trials. To establish whether the LFP phase at which spikes were emitted conveyed visual information that could not be extracted by spike rates alone, we compared the Shannon information about the movie carried by spike counts to that carried by the phase of firing. We found that at low LFP frequencies, the phase of firing conveyed 54% additional information beyond that conveyed by spike counts. The extra information available in the phase of firing was crucial for the disambiguation between stimuli eliciting high spike rates of similar magnitude. Thus, phase coding may allow primary cortical neurons to represent several effective stimuli in an easily decodable format.  相似文献

Studies analyzing sensory cortical processing or trying to decode brain activity often rely on a combination of different electrophysiological signals, such as local field potentials (LFPs) and spiking activity. Understanding the relation between these signals and sensory stimuli and between different components of these signals is hence of great interest. We here provide an analysis of LFPs and spiking activity recorded from visual and auditory cortex during stimulation with natural stimuli. In particular, we focus on the time scales on which different components of these signals are informative about the stimulus, and on the dependencies between different components of these signals. Addressing the first question, we find that stimulus information in low frequency bands (<12 Hz) is high, regardless of whether their energy is computed at the scale of milliseconds or seconds. Stimulus information in higher bands (>50 Hz), in contrast, is scale dependent, and is larger when the energy is averaged over several hundreds of milliseconds. Indeed, combined analysis of signal reliability and information revealed that the energy of slow LFP fluctuations is well related to the stimulus even when considering individual or few cycles, while the energy of fast LFP oscillations carries information only when averaged over many cycles. Addressing the second question, we find that stimulus information in different LFP bands, and in different LFP bands and spiking activity, is largely independent regardless of time scale or sensory system. Taken together, these findings suggest that different LFP bands represent dynamic natural stimuli on distinct time scales and together provide a potentially rich source of information for sensory processing or decoding brain activity.  相似文献

In the present study, we examined the frequency dependence of auditory search performance. Detection thresholds were measured for an 800-Hz target tone in a sequence of distractor tones (informational masking) as a function of frequency separation between the target and the distractor tones. The results showed that the thresholds decreased monotonically with frequency separation increasing. To further quantify the frequency dependence of auditory search performance, we applied a roex function (Patterson and Moore, 1986) to estimate a filter bandwidth for the threshold data. The estimated bandwidth was wider than that of an auditory filter by a factor of five (Leek et al., 1991). This result, together with some earlier results (Mori, 2003), demonstrates the effectiveness of the informational masking we used.
