A torque-driven, subject-specific 3-D computer simulation model of the impact phase of one-handed tennis backhand strokes was evaluated by comparing performance and simulation results. Backhand strokes of an elite subject were recorded on an artificial tennis court. Over the 50-ms period after impact, good agreement was found with an overall RMS difference of 3.3° between matching simulation and performance in terms of joint and racket angles. Consistent with previous experimental research, the evaluation process showed that grip tightness and ball impact location are important factors that affect postimpact racket and arm kinematics. Associated with these factors, the model can be used for a better understanding of the eccentric contraction of the wrist extensors during one-handed backhand ground strokes, a hypothesized mechanism of tennis elbow. 相似文献

Summary Chromosome 5B of bread wheat is known to carry two major genes giving rise to genetic disorders, Ne1 for hybrid necrosis and Vg for winter variegation. Additionally, in many european winter wheat varieties this chromosome is represented in a translocated form, with 5BL-7BL, 5BL-7BS chromosomes rather than the normal 5B and 7B forms of the standard variety Chinese Spring. Genetic analysis has been carried out to map these genes and the translocation break point, and to investigate their pleiotropic effects or those of linked quantitative trait loci (qtl) for economically important characters. This was facilitated by the development of single chromosome recombinant lines between a normal and translocated karyotype, and growing these in field experiments over two seasons. There was differential segregation in favour of the translocated karyotype in the population of recombinant lines. Linkage analysis revealed that the two morphological markers and the isozyme locus Ibf-B1 were located on the long arm of 5B with a gene order of: breakpoint — Ne1 — Vg — Ibf-B1. Analysis of quantitative characters using these genes as landmarks showed pleiotropic effects of Ne1 or effects of tightly linked qtl on most of the quantitative characters related to grain yield. An additional qtl determining spikelet and grain number/ear appeared to be linked to the centromere. Effects on ear emergence time were associated with both Ne1 and Vg, and these interacted with environments. Similarly, effects on plant height were associated with Ne1 and Vg. In addition, there was a further unlocated locus (loci) for height acting independently of the markers. 相似文献

Reaction time, first-step quickness, lateral (side steps), and forward speed over short distances are important parameters for tennis performance. The aims of this study were: (i) to diagnose the presence of laterality in tennis lateral movements and (ii) to compare the effects of plyometric training (PT), tennis-specific drills training (TDT), and combined training (CT) on performance in tennis-specific movements and power/strength of lower limbs. Sixty-four novice tennis players (21.1 +/- 1.3 years) were equally (n = 16) assigned to a control (C), PT, TDT, or CT. Training was performed 3 times/week for 9 weeks. Testing was conducted before and after training for the evaluation of reaction time (single lateral step), 4-m lateral and forward sprints, 12-m forward sprints with and without turn, reactive ability, power, and strength. There was a significant difference in lateral speed (side-steps) between the 2 sides (P < 0.05). PT, TDT, or CT improved the 4m lateral and forward sprints (P < 0.05). PT and CT improved also the reaction time of the "slow" side (P < 0.05), whereas TDT and CT improved the 12-m sprint performances with and without turn (P < 0.05). Power and strength improved in most tests after PT and CT. Lateral and forward sprints were correlated (r = -0.50 to -0.75; P < 0.05) with power/strength. In conclusion, PT improved fitness characteristics that rely more on reactive strength and powerful push-off of legs such as, lateral reaction time, 4-m lateral and forward sprints, drop jump and maximal force. TDT improved all 4-m and 12-m sprint performances, whereas CT appeared to incorporate the advantage of both programs and improved most tests items. Tennis coaches should be aware that each training regimen may induce more favorable changes to different aspects of fitness. 相似文献

This double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject experiment examined the effects of low-dose caffeine on pain reported during an exhaustive grip task. The grip task consisted of holding a metal block attached to standard Olympic weight plates with the arm at the side until the participants could no longer maintain their grip. Apparently healthy recreationally trained college-aged adults (men, n = 5; women, n = 5) were given either a piece of Stay Alert? gum that delivered 85% of the effective dose of 100 mg of caffeine in 5 minutes or an identical placebo gum that contained no caffeine. Subsequently, pain perception and ratings of perceived exertion were recorded during an exhaustive grip task every 15 seconds and the overall time to exhaustion. No significant difference was found in time to exhaustion between treatments. A significant main effect of treatment for reported pain (p < 0.001, Φ = 0.377) was observed. Thus, in a population of recreationally trained college-aged adults, low-dose caffeine may attenuate the individual's perception of pain during a grip to exhaustion task. 相似文献

Stability ball training (SBT) is believed to improve spinal stability (SS) and could reduce the risk of back pain in sedentary individuals. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of SBT on SS. Twenty sedentary individuals were randomly assigned to either an experimental group that performed SBT twice per week for 10 weeks or to a control group. Differences between groups were assessed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures. The experimental group improved significantly (p < 0.05) on the static back-endurance test from pretest (149.3 +/- 72.3 seconds) to posttest (194.6 +/- 56.7 seconds) and the side bridge test from pretest (45.4 +/- 39.4 seconds) to posttest (71.3 +/- 59.7 seconds). Back endurance for the control group did not change from pretest (123.4 +/- 64.9 seconds) to posttest (87.5 +/- 40.2 seconds), nor did the results of the side bridge test change for this group from pretest (41.8 +/- 26.4 seconds) to posttest (51.6 +/- 35.9 seconds). These findings illustrate that SBT may provide improvements in SS within this population. Practitioners might use SBT exercises where the position of the spine is maintained during the early phases of back-pain prevention programs. This type of programming might be beneficial to individuals who spend a good deal of time sitting (i.e., in corporate fitness programs) or for individuals who are prone to back pain and have been cleared to exercise. Also, the side bridge and static back endurance assessments may be good choices for measuring SS in field settings. 相似文献

Tennis stroke mechanics have attracted considerable biomechanical analysis, yet current filtering practice may lead to erroneous reporting of data near the impact of racket and ball. This research had three aims: (1) to identify the best method of estimating the displacement and velocity of the racket at impact during the tennis serve, (2) to demonstrate the effect of different methods on upper limb kinematics and kinetics and (3) to report the effect of increased noise on the most appropriate treatment method. The tennis serves of one tennis player, fit with upper limb and racket retro-reflective markers, were captured with a Vicon motion analysis system recording at 500 Hz. The raw racket tip marker displacement and velocity were used as criterion data to compare three different endpoint treatments and two different filters. The 2nd-order polynomial proved to be the least erroneous extrapolation technique and the quintic spline filter was the most appropriate filter. The previously performed "smoothing through impact" method, using a quintic spline filter, underestimated the racket velocity (9.1%) at the time of impact. The polynomial extrapolation method remained effective when noise was added to the marker trajectories. 相似文献

Microcracking has been shown to occur when bone is 'damaged' as shown by a loss of stiffness. The effect on bone's toughness of the types of damage produced at low losses of stiffness are not known. We loaded bovine bone specimens in bending and tension to stiffness losses of up to 27%, and examined the microcracking produced. The tensile specimens had diffuse arrays of microcracks of 2-20 microm in length, characteristic of tensile loading, on all surfaces. The bending specimens showed tensile microcracking on the tensile surface and characteristic long, straight, cross-hatched compression cracks on the compressive surface. Specimens were then broken in impact. Those that had been damaged in bending were divided into two groups, in one group the part of the specimen which had undergone compression damage was placed in tension, and in the other group the tensile damage was placed in tension. Tensile damage loaded in tension did not reduce the bone's energy-absorbing ability in impact until a modulus reduction of over 20%. However compression damage loaded in tension did severely reduce the bone's energy absorption capabilities (by an average of about 40%). 相似文献

The effects of food sources on Japanese monkey home range size and location, and population dynamics
The effects of supplemental feeding by tourists on wild Japanese monkey's home range size and location, and troop size and composition were studied for two monkey troops, Troop A and Troop B, living along the Irohazaka loop road, Nikko National Park, central Japan. Changes were documented based on data gathered from 1982 to 1996 by the use of radio telemetry. Troop A's home range size shrank and changed from separate winter and summer ranges to a single, year-round home range, with its core located in a high elevation area where supplemental feeding by tourists was heavy. Troop B's home range also shrank and shifted to a lower elevation where supplemental feeding by tourists was heavy. Troop A's population size increased between the winters of 1983–1984 and 1990–1991 in conjunction with an increase in human encounter rates, and then decreased. Troop B's size increased until the winter of 1993–1994, and then decreased. The instability of troop size between 1993 and 1996 may be explained by documented factors such as a decrease in the adult sex ratio, an increase in the infant-female ratio, and an increase in juvenile mortality and/or emigration, all of which may have been influenced by supplemental feeding by tourists. 相似文献

The Global Positioning System (GPS) gives precise estimates of location. However, the investigation of animal movement and behavior often requires interpolation to examine events between such fixes. We obtained 6,288 GPS locations from an electronic tag deployed for 170 d on an adult male gray seal ( Halichoerus grypus ) that ranged freely off the east coast of Scotland, and interpolated between subsamples of these data to investigate the growth of uncertainty within the intervals between observations. Average uncertainty over the path increased linearly as the interval between interpolating locations increased, reaching 12 km in longitude and 6 km in latitude at 2-d separation. The decrease in precision caused by duty-cycling, only collecting data in part of the day, was demonstrated. Adding noise to the GPS locations to simulate data from the ARGOS satellite system had little effect on the total errors for observations separated by more than 12 h. While the rate of growth in interpolation error is likely to vary between species, these results suggest that frequent, and preferably evenly spaced, location fixes are required to take full advantage of the precision of GPS data in the reconstruction of animal tracks. 相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the cardiovascular and metabolic effects of a 5 wk arm crank (AC) training program on submaximal wheelchair (WC) ergometry in able-bodied women. The 6 subjects in the training group (TG) and 4 in the control group (CG) performed a 10 min WC exercise prior to and following the training period at a power output (PO) that elicited 70% of the pre-training peak oxygen uptake (VO2). Steady state VO2, heart rate (HR), cardiac output (Qc) and stroke volume (Vs) were measured. Resting and post-exercise blood lactate concentrations (LA) were measured, the difference was recorded as net LA. The TG exercised on the AC 3 d.wk-1 at a PO that elicited 85% of each subject's recorded peak HR. Each session consisted of four 4 min exercise bouts preceded by a 2 min warm-up and interspersed with 2 min rest periods. After training, the TG had a significantly (p less than 0.05) lower HR, larger Vs and lower LA in response to the WC exercise. Qc and VO2 were not significantly altered. The results demonstrate that the AC exercise program used in this study produced a physiological training effect which was observed during submaximal WC exercise of an intensity frequently encountered during daily WC ambulation. It appears that short-term, moderate intensity AC training offers an adequate stimulus to reduce the stress imposed by wheelchair locomotion. 相似文献

To investigate the constraints placed on the location and design of mammal burrows by the resident mammal's need for an adequate exchange of respiratory gases with the free atmosphere, we constructed several simple mathematical models for the steady-state diffusion of these gases in sterile burrow-soil systems. In this exchange, diffusion through the soil is of prime importance. Openings of narrow tunnels further than three body lengths from a mammal have a negligible effect on its respiratory microenvironment. Since only a short length of a narrow tunnel around the mammal is of importance in this exchange we may confine attention to design and siting criteria for a discrete chamber containing the mammal.The porosity of the soil in which a burrow chamber is sited and the volume of the burrow chamber have strong and moderate effects respectively on the rate of gas exchange between a resident mammal and the free atmosphere. The depth of the burrow chamber, beyond two chamber diameters, has only a weak effect on this transfer. Soil temperature within the thermoneutral zone of the resident mammal has a weak effect on this transfer, but below the thermoneutral zone, where temperature modifies the rate of consumption (production) of respiratory gas, the effect is strong. Concentrations of respiratory gas in the burrow chamber approach free-atmosphere values when soil porosity, soil temperature, and chamber volume increase and burrow depth decreases.Large mammals are more restricted in the design and siting of burrows than small mammals. Our models indicate that normothermic eutherian mammals with masses much in excess of 0·5 kg are precluded from an indefinite occupation of deep burrows in most field situations. In considering the limitations to our models, several avenues for expanding a mammal's respiratory space are suggested. 相似文献

The influence of heat- and cold-induced pain on tactile sensitivity, a touch gate, was measured under conditions in which the location of the noxious stimuli was varied with respect to the tactile stimulus applied to the thenar eminence of humans. Vibrotactile thresholds were measured in the absence of pain and during administration of a painful stimulus, with the stimulus frequencies selected to activate independently the four psychophysical channels hypothesized to exist in human glabrous skin. Heat-induced pain produced by spatially co-localizing the noxious stimuli with the tactile stimuli was found, on average, to elevate threshold amplitude by 2.2 times (6.7 dB). Co-localized, cold-induced pain raised the average thresholds by about 1.5 times (3.6 dB). Heat-induced pain presented contralaterally produced no change in vibrotactile sensitivity indicating that the effect is probably not due to attentional mechanisms. Ipsilateral heat-induced pain caused an elevation in tactile thresholds even when the noxious and non-noxious stimuli were not co-localized, and the effect may seem to require that the painful stimulus be within the somatosensory region defined possibly in terms of dermatomal organization. Thus the effect is probably related to somatotopic organization and is not peripherally mediated. Mechanical loading of the low back during lifting is a common cause of low back pain. In this study two-handed lifting is compared to one-handed lifting (with and without supporting the upper body with the free hand) while lifting over an obstacle. A 3-D linked segment model was combined with an EMG-assisted trunk muscle model to quantify kinematics and joint loads at the L5S1 joint. Peak total net moments (i.e., the net moment effect of all muscles and soft tissue spanning the joint) were found to be 10+/-3% lower in unsupported one-handed lifting compared to two-handed lifting, and 30+/-8% lower in supported compared to unsupported one-handed lifting. L5S1 joint forces also showed reductions, but not of the same magnitude (18+/-8% and 15+/-10%, respectively, for compression forces, and 15+/-17% and 11+/-14% respectively, for shear forces). Those reductions of low back load were mainly caused by a reduction of trunk and load moment arms relative to the L5S1 joint during peak loading, and, in the case of hand support, by a support force of about 250 N. Stretching one leg backward did not further reduce low back load estimates. Furthermore, one-handed lifting caused an 6+/-8 degrees increase in lateral flexion, a 9+/-5 degrees increase in twist and a 6+/-6 degrees decrease in flexion. Support with the free hand caused a small further increase in lumbar twisting. It is concluded that one-handed lifting, especially with hand support, reduces L5S1 loading but increases asymmetry in movements and moments about the lumbar spine. 相似文献

In walking, humans prefer a moderate step width that minimizes energetic cost and vary step width from step-to-step to maintain lateral balance. Arm swing also reduces energetic cost and improves lateral balance. In running, humans prefer a narrow step width that may present a challenge for maintaining lateral balance. However, arm swing in running may improve lateral balance and help reduce energetic cost. To understand the roles of step width and arm swing, we hypothesized that net metabolic power would be greater at step widths greater or less than preferred and when running without arm swing. We further hypothesized that step width variability (indicator of lateral balance) would be greater at step widths greater or less than preferred and when running without arm swing. Ten subjects ran (3m/s) at four target step widths (0%, 15%, 20%, and 25% leg length (LL)) with arm swing, at their preferred step width with arm swing, and at their preferred step width without arm swing. We measured metabolic power, step width, and step width variability. When subjects ran at target step widths less (0% LL) or greater (15%, 20%, and 25% LL) than preferred, both net metabolic power demand (by 3%, 9%, 12%, and 15%) and step width variability (by 7%, 33%, 46%, and 69%) increased. When running without arm swing, both net metabolic power demand (by 8%) and step width variability (by 9%) increased compared to running with arm swing. It appears that humans prefer to run with a narrow step width and swing their arms so as to minimize energetic cost and improve lateral balance. 相似文献
