Modulation of a turgor-growth movement called circumnutation in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) was investigated using a picture analysis system. Two photoperiod conditions were applied: light–darkness conditions (LD) 8:8 and LD 20:10. After about 3 weeks of these regimes, the plants were placed under constant light to determine whether circadian regulation of circumnutation existed or not. The rhythms of movement activity with regard to the trajectory length, period, and shape of individual circumnutations were examined. Data were processed by Fourier spectral analysis. All the parameters, trajectory length, period, and shape, revealed the ability to entrain to the administered daily cycles (16 h or 30 h). We observed diurnal fluctuations of the circumnutation parameters with the phase of the highest trajectory length, the shortest period, and the highest shape coefficient (the most circular form) during the dark period. After the LD–LL transition, the parameters revealed periodicity, which was close to 24 h. After several days of a clear circadian free running rhythm, a gradual decrease of the amplitude of the rhythm was observed. However, the rhythm did not disappear completely. The trajectory length manifested the strongest entrainment; the circumnutation period and the circumnutation shape were less modulated by photoperiod. These findings indicate for the first time that different parameters of circumnutation in sunflower are circadian-regulated rhythms, not solely ultradian as had been thought previously.  相似文献

Oxalis regnellii Mig. is a trifoliate plant, and the three leaflets usually show synchronized up and down movements with a circadian period of 26–27 h. The three leaflets can also perform desynchronized ultradian oscillations, and we report on such rhythms under different conditions. A study of the occurrence of ultradian leaf movement rhythms as a function of irradiance is presented. At an irradiance of approximately 1 μW cm−2, the occurrence was maximal and ca 30%. The periods varied from 5 to 15 h. Four other cases of ultradian rhythms in different conditions are also presented. In one case spontaneous ultradian rhythms occurred, and in another, two of the leaflets showed ultradian rhythms when the third leaflet had received a light pulse. In two more cases, the three leaflets on a leaf were separated by physical cuts along the petiole between the pulvini; in both cases the period was approximately 5 h. Possible mechanisms to explain the ultradian rhythms in Oxalis regnelli are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Endogenous Rhythms in Mimosa pudica L. Leaf Movements.

The rhythmic movements performed by the leaves of the “Sensitive plant”, Mimosa pudica L., observed by time lapse photography, result of periodical turgor variations taking place in the parenchymatous cells of specialized motor organs. These turgor variations are associated with membrane permeability changes and ionic movements. These leaf movements allow to specify the temporal organization of this plant. Statistical analysis of observed periodicities in leaf movement shows that, in alternating conditions of light and dark (L/D:14/10) three distinct rhythms exist: a circadian rhythm synchronized by the photoperiodic cycle (τ = 24 hrs), and two ultradian rhythms with mean period values 3.8 hrs and 0.5 hrs respectively. In constant conditions from germination (L/L), the leaf behavior is strongly modified, but the three period values are found again (mean period values of 25.1 hrs, 3.5 hrs and 0.6 hrs respectively). The occurence of many rhythms with various periods taking place in the same organ is discussed in reference to observations effected on other biological subjects. Then, it appears that the period value within 2 and 4 hrs may be considered as a characteristic one in plants.  相似文献

The sensitivity of the circadian leaf movement of Oxalis regnellii Mig. to imipramine (a tricyclic dibenzazepine) was investigated. Imipramine, like Li+, is used as a therapeutic agent against depressive disorders in man. The therapeutic effects of the two substances might be mediated via effects on basic circadian rhythms and the cellular level. It was indeed possible to influence the circadian movement of Oxalis by imipramine; pulses (10−3 M , 4h) phase shifted the rhythms and caused advances. A phase response curve is presented. No period change of the movements was caused by permanent presence of imipramine (5 - 10−5 or 10−5 M ). The nature of the imipramine-induced phase shift is discussed and compared with Li−1 effects on the same circadian system.  相似文献

Circumnutation is a helical organ movement widespread among plants. It is variable due to a different magnitude of trajectory (amplitude) outlined by the organ tip, duration of one cycle (period), circular, elliptical, pendulum-like or irregular shape and clock- and counterclockwise direction of rotation. Some of those movement parameters are regulated by circadian clock and show daily and infradian rhythms. Circumnutation is influenced by light, temperature, chemicals and can depend on organ morphology. The diversity of this phenomenon is easier to see now that the digital time-lapse video method is developing fast. Whether circumnutation is an endogenous action, a reaction to exogenous stimuli or has a combined character has been discussed for a long time. Similarly, the relationship between growth and circumnutation is still unclear. In the mechanism of circumnutation, epidermal and endodermal cells as well as plasmodesmata, plasma membrane, ions (Ca2+, K+ and Cl), ion channels and the proton pump (H+ATPase) are engaged. Based on these data, the hypothetical electrophysiological model of the circumnutation mechanism has been proposed here. 叶片暗呼吸温度敏感性对研究森林生态系统碳循环及其对气候变化的响应具有重要意义,但其树种内的变异性及季节动态还不清楚.本研究于2018年在同质园内测定了移栽自4个纬度(塔河、松岭、黑河和带岭)的兴安落叶松针叶的暗呼吸温度敏感系数(Q10),旨在探索来自不同气候条件树木的Q10的种内变异性及季节动态.结果表明: 4个移栽地的Q10具有明显的季节动态,其最大值均出现在生长季中期.4个移栽地树木的Q10存在显著差异,其变动范围为(1.48±0.01)~(2.15±0.03),并且在每个生长季阶段中差异的变化格局一致,即来自低纬度高温地区的树木Q10值较大.Q10与针叶氮浓度、可溶性糖浓度、移栽地年均气温和年均降水量间均存在显著正相关关系.综上,Q10在移栽地之间的差异及其季节动态主要由针叶养分含量和树木对移栽原地气候的长期适应引起的,这些因素在森林碳循环对气候变化响应的模型和预测中应该予以考虑.  相似文献

The period (∼3-5 min) of the ultradian rhythm of the lateral leaflet movement of Desmodium motorium is strongly lengthened (≤30-40%) by the K+ channel blocker tetraethylammoniumchloride (20, 30, and 40 mM) and vanadate (0.5 and 1 mM), which is an effective inhibitor of the plasma membrane-bound H+ pump. The alkali ions K+, Na+, Rb+, and Cs+ (10-40 mM) shorten the period only slightly (≤ 10-15%). Li+ (5-30 mM), however, increases the period of the leaflet rhythm drastically (≤80%). We concluded that the plasmalemma-H+-ATP-ase-driven K+ transport through K+ channels is an essential component of the ultradian oscillator of Desmodium, as has been proposed for the circadian oscillator.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to study the possible role of the gastric antrum and small bowel in the rhythm(s) of plasma gastrin. The cat was used as the laboratory animal. Three groups of cats were provided with a gastric fistula for the study of gastric acid and plasma gastrin rhythms. The first group (N = 7) served as controls. A second group (N = 3) was antrectomized and later subjected to a 80% small bowel resection. Gastric acid secretions were collected every 30 min from 0800 to 2400. Blood samples for determination of gastrin were drawn every 2hr from 0800 to 2400. In control animals a circadian (i.e.<24hr) and 3 ultradian (i.e.<24 hr) rhythms were detected for acid output. In the antrectomized cats, circadian and ultradian rhythms were documented. After small bowel resection circadian and ultradian rhythms in gastric acid secretion were observed. For plasma gastrin, circadian and ultradian rhythms were found in the control cats. In the antrectomized cats no rhythms were observed. After small bowel resection an ultradian rhythm reappeared in these antrectomized cats. Removal of the antrum in the cat induces disappearance of circadian and ultradian rhythms of plasma gastrin but fails to modify the acid rhythms. Small bowel resection results in the reappearance of an ultradian rhythm for plasma gastrin and a shift in acrophase for the circadian rhythm in acid secretion.  相似文献

The function of ultradian rhythms is not yet clearly elucidated. In particular, short-term rhythms are expressed during early ontogeny, especially in broods of precocial birds. We investigated the relationship between the clarity of the ultradian rhythm of the activity/rest cycle of a group of young Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and the level of social synchronisation and spatial cohesion between the birds within that group. The subjects were descended from two lines selected for either very pronounced rhythmic or arrhythmic circadian activity. We found a positive relationship between the clarity of the ultradian rhythm of the activity/rest cycle when birds were young and the clarity of the circadian rhythm of feeding activity when birds were older, but still immature. The temporal organisation of the behaviour of the chicks from these two lines was observed in outdoor aviaries, when they were 4, 8, 12 and 15 days old. The mean ultradian period expressed by groups of 12 chicks was variable, with a minimum of 6 minutes. The ultradian period lengthened regularly as chicks grew older, and reached approximately 40 min on day 15. The clarity of the ultradian rhythmicity of group activity was linked to the level of inter-individual social synchronisation and of spatial cohesion; the more pronounced the ultradian rhythms of a group, the greater the temporal and spatial cohesion of the chicks within the group. Moreover, these characteristics varied with the age of the chicks. Finally, chicks in the less rhythmic groups weighed less. These results stress the adaptive value of this temporal organisation strategy under natural conditions.  相似文献

The effect of abscisic acid on the circadian leaf movements of Oxalis regnellii Mig. was investigated. Leaf stalks were cut and put into a nutrient solution, and the leaf movements automatically recorded. Continuous application of ABA (10-5 or 10-4 M ) to the solution did not alter the circadian period. However, the treatment delayed the rhythm and the amplitude was somewhat decreased. ABA pulses (4 h, 10-4 M ) caused permanent phase shifts of the rhythm with delays and advances. Transient wilting of the stalks plus leaves did not produce permanent phase shifts of the rhythm. A wilting period of 4 h gave a (transient) 2 h advance as judged from the first maximum after the wilting treatment. This advance was independent of the time of application of the wilting. Wilting treatment for 8 h caused advances, the magnitude of which varied according to the timing of the wilting treatment. It is concluded that there was no connection between the (permanent) ABA effects and the (transient) wilting effects on the phase of the circadian rhythm. A direct action of ABA on the circadian oscillator is possible and the molecular mechanism might be via effects on ion permeability of the pulvini cells.  相似文献

Background: Circadian rhythms in plasma concentrations of many hormones and cytokines determine their effects on target cells. Methods: Circadian variations were studied in cortisol, melatonin, cytokines (basic fibroblast growth factor [bFGF], EGF, insulin-like growth factor-1 [IGF-1]), and a cytokine receptor (insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 [IGFBP-3]) in the plasma of 28 patients with metastatic breast cancer. All patients followed a diurnal activity pattern. Blood was drawn at 3h intervals during waking hours and once during the night, at 03:00. The plasma levels obtained by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) or radioimmunoassay (RIA) were evaluated by population mean cosinor (using local midnight as the phase reference and by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Cortisol and melatonin showed a high-amplitude circadian rhythm and a superimposed 12h frequency. bFGF showed a circadian rhythm with an acrophase around 13:00 with a peak-to-trough interval (double amplitude) of 18.2% and a superimposed 12h frequency. EGF showed a circadian rhythm with an acrophase around 14:20, a peak-to-trough interval of 25.8%, and a superimposed 12h frequency. IGF-1 showed a high value in the morning, which is statistically different t test) from the low value at 10:00, but a regular circadian or ultradian rhythm was not recognizable as a group phenomenon. IGFBP-3 showed a low-amplitude (peak-to-trough difference 8.4%) circadian rhythm with the acrophase around 11:00 and low values during the night. Conclusions: (1) Circadian periodicity is maintained in hospitalized patients with metastatic breast cancer. (2) Ultradian (12h) variations were superimposed on the circadian rhythms of the hormones and several of the cytokines measured. (3) Studies of hormones and cytokines in cancer patients have to take their biologic rhythms into consideration. (4) The circadian periodicity of tumor growth stimulating or restraining factors raises questions about circadian and/ or ultradian variations in the pathophysiology of breast cancer. Four plant movements are considered: circumnutation of apeces of Phaseolus, nutations (ultradian movement) of lateral leaflets of Desmodium gyrans, nyctinastim and Mimosa pudica seismonastic movement. The rhythms mechanisms are briefly summarized except for seismonastism: in this case, experimental evidence progressively accumulated, at first indirect and recently direct is described, leading eventually to conclusions about the existence and function of contractile proteins. Indeed, in spite of the nowadays clear evidence, the mechanism has not yet gained total recognition among plant physiologists and it is usually overseen or ignored in a reductionist approach. From these four exemplative cases, an interesting evolutionary organization change is apparent in movement, morphogenesis, chemistry and mechanism.  相似文献

Abstract

To test the hypothesis that an oscillator located outside the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) controls the circadian rhythm of body temperature, we conducted a study with 14 blinded rats, 10 of which receiving a SCN lesion. Body temperature was automatically and continuously recorded for about one month by intraperitoneal radio transmitters. Food intake, drinking and locomotor activity were also recorded. Periodograms revealed that 3 rats with histologically verified total bilateral SCN lesions did not exhibit any circadian rhythmicity. The 7 other rats appeared to have partial lesions. They showed shortening of period and severe amplitude reduction in all functions. Thus, no support was found for the hypothesis of a separate circadian ‘temperature oscillator’ located outside the SCN. Nevertheless, after large partial lesions body temperature showed more persistency than some of the other behavioral rhythms.

Ultradian rhythms in temperature persisted after partial and total lesions. Other functions showed parallel ultradian rhythms. In intact rats the ultradian peaks were restricted predominantly to the subjective night. After total lesions these peaks became more or less homogeneously distributed in time but more heterogeneously after partial lesions. So the SCN plays a role in the temporal structure of ultradian rhythms but does not generate them. Non‐24‐hour actograms showed instabilities of period and phase of ultradian rhythms. Intact and lesioned rats were similar with respect to the mean (about 3.5 hrs) and standard deviation (about 1.5 hrs) of ultradian periods in temperature. These features indicate that a mechanism outside the SCN is underlying ultradian rhythmicity, capable of generating short‐term oscillations. Two approaches, homeostatic sleep‐wake relaxation oscillations and multiple circadian oscillators, are discussed.  相似文献

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) regulates the circadian rhythms of body temperature (T(b)) and vigilance states in mammals. We studied rats in which circadian rhythmicity was abolished after SCN lesions (SCNx rats) to investigate the association between the ultradian rhythms of sleep-wake states and brain temperature (T(br)), which are exposed after lesions. Ultradian rhythms of T(br) (mean period: 3.6 h) and sleep were closely associated in SCNx rats. Within each ultradian cycle, nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep was initiated 5 +/- 1 min after T(br) peaks, after which temperature continued a slow decline (0.02 +/- 0.006 degrees C/min) until it reached a minimum. Sleep and slow wave activity (SWA), an index of sleep intensity, were associated with declining temperature. Cross-correlation analysis revealed that the rhythm of T(br) preceded that of SWA by 2-10 min. We also investigated the thermoregulatory and sleep-wake responses of SCNx rats and controls to mild ambient cooling (18 degrees C) and warming (30 degrees C) over 24-h periods. SCNx rats and controls responded similarly to changes in ambient temperature. Cooling decreased REM sleep and increased wake. Warming increased T(br), blunted the amplitude of ultradian T(br) rhythms, and increased the number of transitions into NREM sleep. SCNx rats and controls had similar percentages of NREM sleep, REM sleep, and wake, as well as the same average T(b) within each 24-h period. Our results suggest that, in rats, the SCN modulates the timing but not the amount of sleep or the homeostatic control of sleep-wake states or T(b) during deviations in ambient temperature.  相似文献

土壤呼吸的温度敏感性(Q10)是陆地碳循环与气候系统间相互作用的关键参数。尽管已有大量关于不同类型森林Q10季节和年际变化规律的研究, 但是对Q10在区域尺度的空间变异特征及其影响因素仍认识不足, 已有结果缺乏一致结论。该研究通过整合已发表论文, 构建了中国森林生态系统年尺度Q10数据集, 共包含399条记录、5种森林类型(落叶阔叶林(DBF)、落叶针叶林(DNF)、常绿阔叶林(EBF)、常绿针叶林(ENF)、混交林(MF))。分析了不同森林类型Q10的空间变异特征及其与地理、气候和土壤因素的关系。结果显示, 1) Q10介于1.09到6.24之间, 平均值(±标准误差)为2.37 (± 0.04), 且在不同森林类型之间无显著差异; 2)当考虑所有森林类型时, Q10随纬度、海拔、土壤有机碳含量(SOC)和土壤全氮含量(TN)的增加而增大, 随经度、年平均气温(MAT)、平均年降水量(MAP)的增加而减小。气候(MATMAP)和土壤(SOCTN)因素间存在相互作用, 共同解释了33%的Q10空间变异, 其中MATSOCQ10空间变异的主要驱动因素; 3)不同类型森林Q10对气候和土壤因素的响应存在差异。在DNF中Q10MAP的增加而减小, 而其他类型森林中Q10MAP无显著相关性; 在EBF、DBF、ENF中Q10TN的增加而增大, 但Q10TN的敏感性在EBF中最高, 在ENF中最低。这些结果表明, 尽管Q10有一定的集中分布趋势, 但仍有较大范围的空间变异, 在进行碳收支估算时应注意尺度问题。Q10的主要驱动因素和Q10对环境因素的响应随森林类型而变化, 在气候变化情景下, 不同森林类型间Q10可能发生分异。因此, 未来的碳循环-气候模型还应考虑不同类型森林碳循环关键参数对气候变化的响应差异。  相似文献

Circadian rhythms in the retina may reflect intrinsic rhythms in the eye. Previous reports on circadian variability in electrophysiological human retinal measures have been scanty, and the results have been somewhat inconsistent. We studied the circadian variation of the electrooculography (EOG), electroretinography (ERG), and visual threshold (VTH) in subjects undergoing a 36h testing period. We used an ultrashort sleep-wake cycle to balance effects of sleep and light-dark across circadian cycles. Twelve healthy volunteers (10 males, 2 females; mean age 26.3 years, standard deviation [SD] 8.0 years, range 19-40 years) participated in the study. The retinal functions and oral temperature were measured every 90 min. The EOG was measured in the light, whereas the ERG and the VTH were measured in the dark. Sleep was inferred from activity detected by an Actillume monitor. The EOG peak-to-peak responses followed a circadian rhythm, with the peak occurring late in the morning (acrophase 12:22). The ERG b-wave implicit time peaked in the early morning (acrophase 06:46). No statistically significant circadian rhythms could be demonstrated in the ERG a-wave implicit time or peak-to-peak amplitude. The VTH rhythm peaked in the early morning (acrophases 07:59 for blue and 07:32 for red stimuli). All retinal rhythms showed less-consistent acrophases than the temperature and sleep rhythms. This study demonstrated several different circadian rhythms in retinal electrophysiological and psychophysical measures of healthy subjects. As the retinal rhythms had much poorer signal-to-noise ratios than the temperature rhythm, these measures cannot be recommended as circadian markers.
