Thermoregulation in free-ranging Nycteris thebaica (Nycteridae) during winter: No evidence of torpor
Bats are among the most heterothermic mammals, with nearly all species investigated under free-ranging conditions to date exhibiting some degree of daily torpor and/or hibernation. We investigated thermoregulation during late winter by seven Nycteris thebaica in a warm, semi-arid habitat in northern South Africa, using temperature-sensitive transmitters to measure skin temperature (Tskin). Unexpectedly, we found no evidence for any expression of daily torpor or hibernation based on a total of 86 days of data from 7 bats (one male and six females), despite air temperatures as low as ~10 °C. Instead, daytime Tskin was distributed unimodally with most values in the 33–35 °C range, and a minimum Tskin of 28.4 °C at a roost temperature of 24.6 °C. There are several possible reasons why N. thebaica may avoid torpor, including predation in roosts, and the long nightly foraging periods of this species compared to many others. 相似文献

This study describes the foraging strategies, foraging areas, and roosts used by four female radio-tagged Nycteris grandis along the Zambezi River in Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. The bats exhibited two foraging strategies, sometimes hunting from perches, other times flying continuously close to the ground. Some individuals used one strategy more than the other. During the study, the bats fed mainly on frogs, selecting only Ptychadena anchietae ; they also took crickets, moths and cicadas. Each bat usually consumed two frogs each night and patterns of occupation of feeding perches suggest that their foraging efficiency was between 21 and 36%. The marked bats roosted in an old water tower or in a hollow Acacia albida. Four of five marked females were nursing young during this study. 相似文献

The bat family Nycteridae contains only the genus Nycteris, which comprises 13 currently recognized species from Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, one species from Madagascar, and two species restricted to Malaysia and Indonesia in South‐East Asia. We investigated genetic variation, clade membership, and phylogenetic relationships in Nycteridae with broad sampling across Africa for most clades. We sequenced mitochondrial cytochrome b (cytb) and four independent nuclear introns (2,166 bp) from 253 individuals. Although our samples did not include all recognized species, we recovered at least 16 deeply divergent monophyletic lineages using independent mitochondrial and multilocus nuclear datasets in both gene tree and species tree analyses. Mean pairwise uncorrected genetic distances among species‐ranked Nycteris clades (17% for cytb and 4% for concatenated introns) suggest high levels of phylogenetic diversity in Nycteridae. We found a large number of designated clades whose members are distributed wholly or partly in East Africa (10 of 16 clades), indicating that Nycteris diversity has been historically underestimated and raising the possibility that additional unsampled and/or undescribed Nycteris species occur in more poorly sampled Central and West Africa. Well‐resolved mitochondrial, concatenated nuclear, and species trees strongly supported African ancestry for SE Asian species. Species tree analyses strongly support two deeply diverged subclades that have not previously been recognized, and these clades may warrant recognition as subgenera. Our analyses also strongly support four traditionally recognized species groups of Nycteris. Mitonuclear discordance regarding geographic population structure in Nycteris thebaica appears to result from male‐biased dispersal in this species. Our analyses, almost wholly based on museum voucher specimens, serve to identify species‐rank clades that can be tested with independent datasets, such as morphology, vocalizations, distributions, and ectoparasites. The major economic constraint for culturing sole (Solea solea) is its slow and variable growth. The objective was to study the relationship between feed intake/efficiency, growth, and (non-) feeding behaviour of sole. Sixteen juveniles with an average (SD) growth of 2.7 (1.9) g/kg0.8/d were selected on their growth during a 4-week period in which they were housed communally with 84 other fish. Selected fish were housed individually during a second 4-week period to measure individual feed intake, growth, and behaviour. Fish were hand-fed three times a day during the dark phase of the day until apparent satiation. During six different days, behaviour was recorded twice daily during 3 minutes by direct observations. Total swimming activity, frequency of burying and of escapes were recorded. At the beginning and end of the growth period, two sequential behavioural tests were performed: “Novel Environment” and “Light Avoidance”. Fish housed individually still exhibited pronounced variation in feed intake (CV = 23%), growth (CV = 25%) and behavior (CV = 100%). Differences in feed intake account for 79% of the observed individual differences in growth of sole. Fish with higher variation in feed intake between days and between meals within days had significantly a lower total feed intake (r = −0.65 and r = −0.77) and growth. Active fish showed significantly higher feed intake (r = 0.66) and growth (r = 0.58). Boldness during both challenge tests was related to fast growth: (1) fish which reacted with a lower latency time to swim in a novel environment had significantly higher feed intake (r = −0.55) and growth (r = −0.66); (2) fish escaping during the light avoidance test tended to show higher feed intake (P<0.1) and had higher growth (P<0.05). In conclusion, feeding consistency, swimming activity in the tank, and boldness during behavioral tests are related to feed intake and growth of sole in captivity. 相似文献

Facial expressions and gestures seen in eight wild caught adult and three laboratory born stump-tailed macaques are described. Systematic observations, designed to show the association of these with attack, fleeing, grooming, or copulating are reported. The behaviour is in general very similar to that of other macaques.However, we find that Presenting and Lipsmacking are given by animals who are likely to win or lose fights and are shown to babies. These are clearly not just appeasing in function (reducing attack) but also reassuring (reducing fleeing). Two forms of non-sexual Presenting were found to follow and lead to different behaviour. Copulation appears to be different from that described in rhesus, ejaculation occuring on each mounting, which last for around one minute. In our animals the males bit the females during the later stages of copulation, but seldom showed any signs of aggression when not mounting.Grin-lipsmacking (lipsmacking with lips retracted exposing the teeth) is associated with fleeing, with changing from fighting to grooming and with copulation. A link between these situations may be provided earlier in development by the observation that mothers comfort frightened, Grin-lipsmacking babies by manipulating the external genitalia. 相似文献

The behaviour in groups of both sexes of marbled newts (Triturus marmoratus) from Sintra, Portugal, kept for a few weeks in a large aquarium, is described. Behaviour patterns described for this species
and for other species in this genus were recognised. The following behaviours are described for the first time: Walk-over,
Land-over, Stand-on, Show, Erect-body, Yawn, Circle, and Dig. Females seem to have a more active role in courtship than is
usually considered. The behaviour frequencies for each sex were analysed using simulation statistics. Some elements usually
classified as male sexual behaviours occur in both sexes and are likely to play other social roles.

The feeding behaviour of some 30 species of Octocorallia was examined in the laboratory and in the field. All of the species from the Orders–Alcyonacea, Gorgonacea, Stolonifera and Telestacea, appear to have a common, basic feeding strategy. Fine particulate matter and zooplankton were captured in a raptorial manner by the tentacles and pinnules. Upon capture of food particles, the tentacles were flexed rapidly inwards and closed or wiped across the mouth. At the same time the mouth opened and ingestion was accomplished by directional ciliary currents in the mouth and the pharynx. Food capture by means of mesenterial filaments, mucus strands or ciliary currents was not observed. The examination of gut contents of Alcyonacea showed that they feed upon zooplankton. Epibenthic copepods from the demersal coral reef zooplankton were an important element of the diet of alcyonaceans. 相似文献

digestive tract occurs only at the moment of Twist and not any other time. The standard feeding patterns ofMisgurnus anguillicaudatus are thus quick inhalation of organic matter together with substrate, occurring at the moment of Twist, which is released

In this article, we describe and compare the sunning behaviour of four ibis species, which represent four different genera (Threskiornis, Plegadis, Geronticus and, for the first time, Eudocimus). Sunning is a genetically fixed form of comfort behaviour. Sunning behaviour can be divided in an initiation and ascending. When sunning, each species has its specific body and wing posture. For each species, we show the typical sunning behaviour and variations of it, also the factors which initiate and influence it.While the other ibis species have similar postures, the genus Eudocimus seems to represent a separated taxon. Sunning behaviour only occured with full sunshine (>11000 Lux) and when temperatures reached a species-specific minimum. Never sunning and drying were combined in any ibis species.Sunning behaviour does not seem to be vital, but it has a strong “wellness” aspect. It can be seen as a hint for good care, as sunning behaviour is shown under optimal conditions. In addition, it is a very attractive behaviour for visitors. 相似文献

Scales on the hairs of pollinating bats spread out at an angle to the main hair shaft. In contrast, the hairs of most bats not associated with plants are relatively smooth. Both megachiropteran and microchiropteran flower-feeding bats show this divaricate scale structure which may aid in the collection of a heavy coating of pollen. Some of the pollen is transferred to subsequent flowers, but most is groomed from the fur and ingested as the only reliable nitrogen source for the bat. The tongues of nectar-feeding bats also show structural modifications which allow efficient uptake of the carbohydrate fraction of the diet. The food consumption and egg production of 26 adult (13 female and 13 male) Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) were monitored during prespawning, spawning and postspawning periods. Females spawned from late January to mid-April. Feeding activity occurred from December to early January and ceased for females, on average, 36 days (15–54 days) before the onset of spawning. The duration of spawning by females was, on average, 42 days (10–61 days) and feeding was suppressed by both sexes during the first three-quarters of each female's spawning period. Mature females went, on average, 70 days or 19% of the year without eating. An abrupt increase in feeding activity, particularly by females, occurred during the last quarter of spawning or shortly after the release of the last egg batch (on average, feeding started again after 91% of a female's eggs had been released or 82% of egg batches). Females consumed greater quantities of food than males during both winter and postspawning feeding periods. During spawning, females lost, on average, 29% of their body weight and males 14%. Fecundity ranged from 0.75 to 3.97 million eggs per female. The volume of eggs produced by four individual females (range = 1285–5995 ml in four to 11 batches) ranged from 99 to 195% (mean 150%) of a female's postspawning body volume. Six immature cod fed throughout the experimental period and gained, on average, 8% of initial body weight. Laboratory results were supported by stomach fullness index values of Georges Bank cod exhibiting different maturity states. 相似文献

The feeding response of 3rd‐instar Costelytra zealandica larvae to 20 amino acids tested individually at 2 concentrations was assessed. Six of these compounds had a phagostimulatory effect; in particular, the ubiquitous amino acids L‐aspartic acid, L‐glutamic acid, and L‐serine induced considerable feeding by the grubs. Ascorbic acid was also a strong feeding stimulant and, in combination with sucrose, evoked an intense behavioural response. ABSTRACT. The parasitoid, Bracon mellitor , will probe with its ovipositor plant structures containing its host. The identification of methyl parahydroxy-benzoate (methyl parasept), an antimicrobial additive to the semi-synthetic diet used for rearing the host, as a releaser of this behaviour prompted an investigation of the parasitoid's response to this chemical. Its absence from field hosts suggested the response was learned. Female parasitoids reared in host-infested cotton plant buds from the fields or in methyl parasept-free hosts did not respond to methyl parasept alone until exposed to hosts contaminated with it. This is taken to imply associative learning by the females reared from the methyl parasept-free hosts. A few responses to methyl parasept were elicited from inexperienced females reared from methyl parasept-contaminated hosts, but their responsiveness increased after they had been exposed to methyl parasept-contaminated hosts as oviposition stimuli. These results point to the caution that must be exercised in the isolation and identification of kairomones. 相似文献

Various studies address the morphology of the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of insectivorous bat species. However, detailed morphometric studies including mucin histochemistry are scarce. This study compares various GIT measurements as well as the quantification of intestinal mucin secreting cells in four insectivorous bat species representing four different families of Chiroptera. Alcian blue/Periodic acid Schiff's stain was used to differentiate between acid and neutral mucin-secreting cells while the Aldehyde fuchsin/Alcian blue stain further differentiated between two acid mucins, namely sialo-, and sulphomucins. The number of cells was quantified and statistically analysed. All species had a simple GIT morphology represented by a simple, completely glandular stomach and the absence of a cecum. The exception was R. hardwickii, where a small cecum was observed which had histological mucosal features of both the small and large intestine. In R.hardwickii, distal to the cecum, typical colonic mucosal features such as the absence of villi and an abundance of goblet cells were observed. In all four species, the total number of goblet cells increased from the proximal to the distal intestinal regions. Mixed (acid and neutral) mucins dominated the entire GIT of all species. Neutral mucin-secreting cells were observed in the gastric pylorus and proximal intestinal regions in all species. Brunner's glands stained positive for neutral mucins. Exclusively acid mucin-secreting cells were seen in the distal intestinal regions of all species except N. thebaica. Sulphomucin-secreting cells were the most prominent acid mucin cell-type towards the distal intestine. The distribution of different mucin secreting cells indirectly provides information regarding the quality of the intestinal biofilm in the species studied. 相似文献

Connecting behaviour and performance: the evolution of biting behaviour and bite performance in bats
Variation in behaviour, performance and ecology are traditionally associated with variation in morphology. A neglected part of this ecomorphological paradigm is the interaction between behaviour and performance, the ability to carry out tasks that impact fitness. Here we investigate the relationship between biting behaviour and performance (bite force) among 20 species of ecologically diverse bats. We studied the patterns of evolution of plasticity in biting behaviour and bite force, and reconstructed ancestral states for behaviour and its plasticity. Both behavioural and performance plasticity exhibited accelerating evolution over time, and periods of rapid evolution coincided with major dietary shifts from insect‐feeding to plant‐feeding. We found a significant, positive correlation between behavioural plasticity and bite force. Bats modulated their performance by changing their biting behaviour to maximize bite force when feeding on hard foods. The ancestor of phyllostomids was likely a generalist characterized by high behavioural plasticity, a condition that also evolved in specialized frugivores and potentially contributed to their diversification. 相似文献
