Third-instar praying mantids (Tenodera sinensisSaussure: Mantidae) were fed either a sequence of unpalatable milkweed bugs (Oncopeltus fasciatusDallas: Lygaeidae) and palatable fruit flies (Drosophila melanogasterMeigen: Drosophilidae) or a control diet of palatable flies only. Mantids fed a sequence of 3 days of unpalatable bugs and 4 days of palatable flies took, on average, 5 days longer to develop to the fourth instar than the controls, and consequently, their growth rate was less than that of the controls. They ate 10–15 unpalatable bugs in that time, but also, because the stadium was prolonged, they ended up eating as many flies as the faster-growing controls and therefore attained similar biomass. Mantids subjected to episodes of 2 days with unpalatable bugs followed by 4 days of flies had reduced growth rates that were a function of both more time spent in the stadium and less weight gained than the controls. Mantids subjected to episodes of 1 day with unpalatable bugs followed by 4 days of flies did not gain as much weight as the controls but had similar growth rates. Mantids fed unpalatable bugs on Days 1 and 6 and palatable flies on the other days and mantids fed flies for 4 days and then 1 day without food grew at the same rate. In this case, eating unpalatable prey for 2 days of 7 (with 7 days = average stadium duration) slowed weight gain as much as missing food for a day. We conclude that, depending on the sequence, episodes (in this case, 1 or more days) of eating unpalatable prey can reduce the daily rate of consumption sufficiently to have a negative impact on biomass gained, stadium duration, and growth rate.  相似文献

The effects of the parasitic phorid fly, Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier, on the competitive interactions between the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and a native North American ant, Forelius pruinosus (Roger), were investigated in the laboratory. P. tricuspis is a highly host-specific endoparasitoid of S. invicta workers that is currently being reared and released as a biological control agent of S. invicta in the US. We tested the effect of P. tricuspis on the colony growth rate of S. invicta when S. invicta was forced to compete with F. pruinosus for a protein resource (freeze-killed crickets) in laboratory competition arenas. In addition to colony growth rate, we quantified the effect of the phorid flies on the foraging rate of S. invicta. Though S. invicta significantly reduced its foraging rate in the presence of the phorid flies, we did not detect an effect of the flies on colony growth rate. Possible explanations for these results include behavioral compensation by S. invicta for the presence of the flies. We present these laboratory results in light of a literature search indicating that laboratory tests of biological control agent efficacy are good predictors of field efficacy. We conclude that P. tricuspis alone is unlikely to suppress S. invicta populations in the field by reducing their competitive ability.  相似文献

A method for maintaining anin vivo culture ofEntomophthora muscae (C) Fres. on its original host, adult carrot flies (Psila rosae F.), is described. The lethal time for adult carrot flies was greatly influenced by temperature, both for infected and for uninfected flies. In the range 8.2°C–20.2°C the LT50 for infected flies was about 5.4 times shorter than the estimated average life-span for uninfected flies. The discharge of primary spores was also strongly dependent on temperature. The total number of primary spores discharged per fly at 100% RH and in darkness ranged between 1.2×104 and 9.6×104 with a mean of 5.1×104.   相似文献

Aphids, like most phloem-feeding insects, commonly exhibit a high degree of host specificity. Plant-specific chemical compounds are likely to serve as important host selection cues for monophagous aphids and such substances could be present in aphid honeydew. Apterous virginoparae ofMyzus persicae (Sulzer) andPhorodon humuli (Schrank) were reared on a buffered sucrose solution containing various aphid honeydews or a mixture of amino acids. In two separate experiments, the host-specificP. humuli (hop aphid) could grow and reproduce only on diets containing honeydew collected from hop (Humulus lupulus L.).M. persicae (the green peach aphid, GPA) did not perform well on diets containing hop honeydew, perhaps because hop is a poor GPA host. Honeydew collected from preferred GPA host plants rape,Brassica napus L., and jimsonweed,Datura stramonium L., allowed GPA growth and reproduction. Hop aphids, however, performed poorly on rape and jimsonweed honeydew diets. Bell pepper,Capsicum annuum L., honeydew supported neither the hop aphid nor GPA. The study of aphid honeydew components may contribute towards a more complete understanding of host preference and selection phenomena in aphids.  相似文献

Colonies ofNeodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy) larvae infected by nuclear polyhedrosis virus were visited by parasitoids, predators, and scavengers. Six transmission pathways were studied in detail. Viable virus polyhedra (PIB) were isolated from external surfaces of parasitic wasps and faeces of tachinid flies, coccinellid larvae, and scavenging flies. Faeces of the scavenging flies remained infectious 9 months on foliage in the field. A bird fed on earthworms from contaminated soil passed infectious faeces. Raindrops on foliage below diseased larval colonies contained more than 108 PIB/ml. It was concluded that although there are numerous transmission pathways, only a few may be available at any one time. The stochastic nature of many pathways implies that the overall transmission rate is highly variable. These results are consistent with frequent observations of low transmission levels between larvae of the same generation.   相似文献

At 21 °C,Spalangia nigra Latreille (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) averaged 29.3 days between exposure and emergence of 1st progeny from host house flies,Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). At 27 °C, the average developmental time to 1st emergence was reduced to 26.6 days, and a majority of adult wasps emerged from host house fly puparia between 29 and 40 days postoviposition. The sex ratio of progeny ranged from 1.4 to 1.8 female-to-male, but all progeny of virgin females were male. Male wasps lived from 6.8–15 and females 11–17.8 days at 27 °C; honey as a food source increased longevity. No significant differences in parasitism byS. nigra were associated with host house fly pupal densities ranging from 1 to 200 pupae per female-male pair of wasps, but average percent parasitism decreased at host densities greater than 50. House fly pupae exposed to parasitism at ages ranging from 4 to 96 h did not differ in subsequent production of adult flies.S. nigra did not demonstrate preference for house flies or stable flies,Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) as hosts. The results of these studies indicate thatS. nigra may contribute significantly to previously unexplained mortality of house flies and stable flies.   相似文献

Host preferences in both sexes of Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier (Jaguariuna biotype) and Pseudacteon curvatus Borgmeier (Formosa biotype) and their relative attraction to the imported fire ants (IFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren (red IFA), Solenopsis richteri Forel (black IFA) and S. invicta × S. richteri hybrids (hybrid IFA) were investigated in two separate experiments utilizing multiple choice flight bioassays. The results of both experiments clearly showed that both sexes of the Jaguariuna biotype of P. tricuspis could distinguish among the three IFA species and demonstrated greater preference for hybrid IFA and red IFA. This conclusion is supported by a variety of data collected on the number of fly visits, attack rate, and hovering duration (Experiment 1), and on the number of trapped flies (Experiment 2), which showed that black IFA is the least preferred of the three species. Similar results were recorded for the Formosan biotype of P. curvatus, although the data were not as strongly conclusive. Females of this biotype spent a significantly greater amount of time in hovering mode over red IFA and hybrid IFA compared to black IFA, but the other data were not significant. The red IFA is the natural host of both phorid fly biotypes and our results suggest that both biotypes may have evolved a specialized relationship with red IFA including an ability to discriminate it from related fire ants. These results are discussed in relation to the possible role of fire ant chemicals in mediating host preferences in phorid flies, contributions of male phorid flies to fire ant biocontrol, and the practical implications of the key findings.  相似文献

Hypoaspis miles Berlese and H. aculeiferCanestrini (Acari: Laelapidae) were usedagainst Scatella tenuicosta Collin(Diptera: Ephydridae) at the rates of 7, 14and 36 mites per 0.3-l peat pot (1000, 2000 and5000 per net-m2 of peat) with mint (Mentha piperita L.) as the crop. The predatorswere applied either one day (preventivecontrol) or nine days after (curative control)exposing the pots to the flies in thegreenhouse. Based on the number of flies thatemerged from the pots, the control efficacy of preventive H. aculeifer treatments at therate of 36 mites per pot was 84–100% and 92–97% (range over four replicate blocks)after two and three weeks, respectively, fromthe application. The control efficacy ofcurative treatments was 93–100% and 83–94% after two and three weeks, respectively, from the application. Preventive treatmentswith H. miles applied at the rate of 36per pot controlled the flies by 92–100% and 68–97% two and three weeks, respectively, afterthe application. Curative treatments with 36H. miles per pot were less effective (–53–68% and –16–65%, respectively). All treatments with lower mite rates with eitherspecies were ineffective. Due to moreconsistent reduction of fly numbers by Hypoaspis aculeifer, the species was concluded to be a better biocontrol agent ofshore flies in short-term greenhouse cropsgrown in peat pots, probably due to its higherpredation capacity in comparison to H. miles.  相似文献

Growth responses to temperature and resource limitation in three dipteran species with similar life histories were compared. With respect to current life history theory, two points are raised. First, growth rate in real time increased steeply with temperature in all species, following the standard pattern. However, when expressed in physiological time growth rate increased as temperature decreased in the yellow dung fly Scathophaga stercoraria, remained approximately constant in Sepsis cynipsea, and increased in Drosophila melanogaster. These responses can be understood as adaptations to climate and seasonality. It is concluded that some patterns of adaptation may be more easily interpreted if, and some may even go undetected unless, they are analysed in physiological time. Second, a decrease in body size, development rate and growth rate when resources are limited is believed to be nearly universal and generally predicted by life history models. Despite their similar life histories, the three species investigated showed qualitatively different growth responses to larval food shortage. At unlimited resources, yellow dung flies showed the fastest initial larval body mass gain per unit time, while those of S. cynipsea and D. melanogaster were lower and about equal. The period of no body mass gain at the end of larval development was longest in S. stercoraria and shortest in S. cynipsea. When facing resource limitation, S. stercoraria emerged smaller but earlier (thus nearly maintaining their growth rate), S. cynipsea smaller after the same development period, and D. melanogaster smaller and later (showing reduced and much reduced growth, respectively). It is concluded that whether growth really slows when resources are limited depends on the precise ecological circumstances of the species in question. More refined models, particularly those where mortality costs are independent of time, and more experiments are necessary to account for the variation in growth and size and age at maturity present in nature. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The genusPlectranthus (Lamiaceae) shows remarkable radiation on the sandstones of southern Natal and northern Transkei in South Africa, where six endemic species occur. Two of these endemic species,P. hilliardiae andP. oribiensis, are included in this study, as well asP. reflexus, for which only limited data are available. The other species that were studied areP. ambiguus, P. ciliatus, P. ecklonii, P. madagascariensis andP. zuluensis. Four of these taxa,P. ambiguus, P. hilliardiae, P. reflexus andP. saccatus var.longitubus, have uniquely long corolla-tubes (20–30mm) and this is related to pollination by nemestrinid flies of the genusStenobasipteron that have proboscides of similar length. Other nemestrinid species of the genusProsoeca have shorter proboscides and pollinate two species ofPlectranthus with shorter corolla-tube lengths (6–15mm). Acrocerid flies, tabanid flies and anthophorid bees are also important visitors to these species. This study on the pollination of seven species of varying corolla-tube lengths shows a correlation between floral tube length and proboscis length of insect visitors, many of which are recorded for the first time as pollinators ofPlectranthus.  相似文献

A variegated position effect on the autonomous gene, purple, has been studied enzymologically in Drosophila melanogaster. Sepiapterin synthase, the enzyme system associated with pr +, was examined for activity in different developmental stages of the fly. The results indicate that T(Y:2) pr c5, cn/prc4 cn flies (flies in which pr + has been translocated and which exhibit variegation) have a reduced amount of enzyme activity as compared with both Oregon-R and pr 1 flies. This reduction in activity was not found in larval stages, which suggests that the inactivation process probably occurs in late larval or early pupal stages. The phenotype of the variegated adult has white eyes with red-colored spots and patches where drosopterins occur. The phenotype of the fly carrying the translocation is modified by the presence of additional Y chromosomes. This extends the observation from other systems that extra heterochromatin acts to suppress the variegated position effect. The advantages of studying the variegation by measuring enzyme activity, as well as the phenotypic expression, are several; for example, the developmental time at which variegation occurs may be estimated even though drosopterin synthesis is not occurring. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is operated by Union Carbide Corporation for the Department of Energy under Contract No. W-7405-eng-26.  相似文献

A field experiment with Drosophila melanogasterrevealed that when flies encounter a particular food type soon after emergence, the probability of their subsequently being attracted to such a resource is increased. In this experiment, the length of time flies experienced their postemergence environments was under the control of the flies themselves. The experiment thus realistically mimicked one form of experiential effect that may be important in nature. A theoretical model is developed which shows that enhanced adult preferences for the types of resources fed on as larvae can substantially increase the degree of host-based genetic subdivision within a polyphagous population.  相似文献

Several aphid honeydews were incorporated into sucrose solutions and presented to hop aphids, Phorodon humuli (Schrank), as artificial diets in free-choice bioassays. Small additions of honeydew collected from two species of aphid feeding on hop, Humulus lupulus L., arrested the searching behavior of the hop aphid and appeared to stimulate prolonged periods of ingestion. This effect was more dependent on the host plant honeydew source than the species of aphid that produced the honeydew. Aphid honeydews collected from plants other than hop (non-hosts to P. humuli) contained hop aphid phagostimulants that were less effective. Our results indicate that analysis of aphid honeydew could help describe chemical cues involved in the recognition of appropriate host plants by aphid species.  相似文献

Euphasiopteryx depleta (Wied) flies successfully developed in the mole cricketsScapteriscus borellii Giglio-Tos andScapteriscus vicinus Scudder, as well as in the short-tailed cricket,Anurogryllus sp., after artificially placing larvae under their pronota. Using this technique, no relation was found between the number of larvae placed on each cricket and the resulting number of puparia obtained from the cricket. In all cases, the number of flies emerging from the puparia was small, with females failing to mature reproductively. AsE. depleta has been reared from field collectedScapteriscus spp., the exact reasons for lack of maturation remain unknown.Anurogryllus sp. can be considered a probable alternate host forE. depleta.   相似文献

Prey preference and egg production of the carabid beetleAgonum dorsale   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In order to elucidate whether the aphidRhopalosiphum padi is low quality food for the carabid beetleAgonum dorsale, as it has previously been found to be for cereal spiders, we performed a series of experiments using fruit fliesDrosophila melanogaster as a standard alternative prey (‘control prey’): 1) Prey preference, 2) Aphid consumption for satiated and starved beetles, 3) Egg production on different diets and 4) Preference experiments with fruit flies coated with a taste of different prey types. Other alternative prey types used were earthworms and sciarid midges, all potential prey in the field.A. dorsale has a low preference for aphids compared to fruit flies. Apparently there is an upper limit to the consumption of aphids independent of hunger and much below the beetles' total food demand. Egg production on a pure diet of aphids is lower than on a pure diet of fruit flies; it is extremely low on a pure diet of earthworms; the highest fecundity is found on a mixed diet. As fruit flies coated with a taste of aphids or sciarid midges are less prefered than flies covered with a taste of fruit flies there may be a chemical factor, acting through taste, involved in determining prey preference.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine attraction and feeding propensity of Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), to different protein bait mixtures with and without the insecticides malathion, spinosad, and phloxine B. Protein baits were more attractive to females than to males. Protein-starved females responded more than protein-fed females. The type of protein (USB® yeast hydrolysate enzymatic, Mazoferm®E802, Nu-Lure®Insect Bait, or Provesta® 621 autolyzed yeast extract) in the bait had a major influence on C. capitata attraction, which was strongest to fresh Provesta. Aged baits (four day-old) were not as attractive as fresh baits. In feeding propensity studies, highest response was observed for USB protein. On the basis of attraction and feeding responses Provesta (attraction and feeding) and USB (feeding) outperformed the standard Nu-Lure. Protein-starved flies were much more likely to feed on protein compared to protein-fed flies. For protein-starved flies, a mixture of Provesta and malathion repelled fruit flies, compared to a mixture of Provesta and spinosad or phloxine B. This was not the case with protein–fed flies. The wasp Fopius arisanus (Sonan), one of C. capitata's primary natural enemies in Hawaii, would not consume protein baits. Our studies suggest that spinosad or phloxine B, with low contact toxicity, mixed with protein baits offers a more environmentally friendly choice for control of C. capitata and conservation of F. arisanus, whereby the nontarget effects of broad spectrum contact poisons such as malathion can be avoided. Presumably, due to greater selectivity with spinosad and phloxine B bait treatments, the host would be killed, but not the natural enemy.  相似文献

A survey was conducted on confined dairy cattle farms and a pig farm from May–October in 1999 to determine the activity and relative abundance of pupal parasitoids and the prevalence of entomopathogenic fungi in populations of the haematophagous stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae), in Denmark. Four species of pteromalids were found with Spalangia cameroni as the predominant. The other parasitoids were S. nigripes, S. nigra and Phygadeuon fumator (Ichneumonidae). Peak activity of the parasitoids was observed to be late in the summer and the beginning of autumn (August–September) when approximately 10% of the collected stable fly pupae were parasitised. Adult stable flies were infected with four species of entomopathogenic fungi: Entomophthora muscae, E. schizophorae, Beauveria bassiana and Verticillium lecanii. All fungi occurred in low percentages (max. 4%) and remained at this level throughout the sampling period. Likewise, adult house flies were infected with B. bassiana and V. lecanii, but Metarhizium anisopliae, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus and V. fusisporum were also recorded. The overall hyphomycete prevalence in house flies was 0.3%, and single species rarely exceeded 0.1%. The prevalence remained low in spite of increasing house fly numbers in August–September.  相似文献

Summary We undertook a deletional analysis of the gypsy retrotransposon in order to determine which sequences of the element are required for its mutagenic effect. We show that a phenotype indistinguishable from that ofy 2 flies can be generated by transformingy flies with a construct containing theyellow gene and a gypsy element located at the same insertion site inyellow as found iny 2 flies. When flies are transformed with similar constructs in which increasing amounts of the 5 transcribed untranslated region of gypsy have been removed, either a partialy 2 revertant or a completely revertant phenotype is obtained. These results yield direct proof that the region of gypsy to which thesu(Hw) protein binds is required for the generation of mutant phenotypes by this retrotransposon.  相似文献

We investigated the response of the tachinid fly, Exorista japonica (Townsend), to host frass or its extracts in order to clarify the host location mechanisms of female flies in a potential host habitat. Host searching time in a patch and the number of patch visits were analyzed by using a frass-containing patch which was excreted by host larvae, Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and patches to which host frass extracts were applied. E. japonica females were arrested in response to the host-frass-containing patch after contacting the frass with their front tarsi, thereby spending most of the time to search the patch and to revisit the host-frass patch. While host-searching time in the patch by the females was longest at their first visit of a patch with host frass, searching time decreased with successive visits. The female flies also exhibited area-restricted searching with methanol extracts of the host frass. Area-restricted searching activity increased with the concentration of host-frass extract, i.e., total searching time in the patch and the number of patch visits varied in a dose-dependent manner. E. japonica females likely employ chemicals in host frass as arrestants in host location.  相似文献
