The large but shallow (3,558 km2, up to 15.3 m deep) lake is eutrophic, with Chironomus plumosus and Potamothrix hammoniensis as dominating macroinvertebrates in the profundal. The extensive well-aerated sublittoral with sandy bottom sediments has a mesotrophic appearance and supports a diverse fauna with several oxyphilous species, including a very abundant population of Dreissena polymorpha. The phytophilous fauna is limited to small sheltered areas only. The average abundance of the small animals of macrozoobenthos (without big molluscs) was 2,617 ind. m–2, their biomass 12.34 g m–2 (corresponding to 52.2 kJ m–2) in 1964–1994. The same figures for big molluscs (mostly Dreissena) were 304 ind. m–2 and 238 g m–2 in 1964–1994, and even 864 ind. m–2 and 687 g m–2 in 1985–1988, at the time of their special mapping. The sublittoral zone revealed the lowest biomass of small animals but the highest biomass of big molluscs. The southern, shallower lake regions, more enriched with nutrients and better protected from wind, revealed a significantly higher biomass of small macrozoobenthos in the near-shore zone than the cleaner and open northern part, while no positive effect of enrichment was observed neither in the biomass of profundal zoobenthos nor in that of big molluscs. The production of the small macrozoobenthos was calculated as 111 and 53 kJ m–2 during two annual cycles in Lake Peipsi s. s., the most productive period being the autumn overturn. Lake Peipsi-Pihkva has the highest abundance and biomass of macrozoobenthos among the large lakes of North Europe.  相似文献

The littoral macrozoobenthos (MZB) of two low acid neutralizing capacity (ANC = 50.0 µeq l–1) northeastern Pennsylvania lakes (treatment and reference) were sampled each ice free season, 1984 through 1988, to evaluate response to limestone addition. Following addition of 100 tons agricultural limestone (CaCO3) to the treatment lake in February 1985, mean annual ANC rose from 20 µeq l–1 to 668 µeq l–1 then decreased. In October 1987, ANC in the treatment lake was decreasing, so 15 additional tons of limestone were added. Pre- limestoning there were few significant (p<0.05) differences between MZB assemblages in the two lakes, but 4 years post treatment the following differences (p<0.05) were detected in the treatment lake: more Chironomidae, Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Hyalella azteca, total MZB numbers and higher Mollusca wet weight than in the reference lake. From 1984 to 1988 in the treatment lake the annual means of the following community characteristics increased (p<0.05): totals of Chironomidae, Ephemeroptera (including Caenis spp.), Odonata, Trichoptera, Sphaeriidae, collectors and MZB numbers; Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera taxa richness and total taxa richness; total and Mollusca wet weight. However, the treatment lake ecosystem is neither self-sustaining nor stable because limestone must be added every 2 to 3 years to maintain ANC above 50 µeq l–1 In the reference lake annual means of ANC, specific conductance, calcium and magnesium decreased (p<0.05) while Secchi depth increased (p<0.05), suggesting continuing acidification.  相似文献

Bryozoans were investigated during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water bodies throughout Norway from 1960 to 1978. The frequency of occurrence of Plumatella fruticosawas evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance, and absence. According to our material P. fruticosais one of the most common bryozoan species in Norwegian fresh water, represented in samples from 251 localities. This species occurred frequently all over the country, north to 71° 06 N (the northernmost record globally). Maximum elevation above sea level was 1179 m (maximum for Northern Europe). In most studies of freshwater bryozoans from the holarctic region, Plumatella fruticosahas been reported as widely distributed, but locally rare. In Norway, however, P. fruticosa is frequently found all over the country, even far to the north. The species apparently finds an optimal climate in the cold temperate and cold regions of Norway. Plumatella fruticosapreferred lakes, avoided slow-flowing rivers and ponds, and was absent in smaller water bodies. The species preferred somewhat higher elevation (400–900 m above sea level), but avoided lakes with the lowest summer temperatures (below 11 °C). P. fruticosa also preferred oligotrophic conditions with poor aquatic vegetation, stony shores, lakes poor in calcium and magnesium (sometimes almost comparable with distilled water), where the water was clear and colourless, and slightly acidic to neutral. The species also preferred lakes surrounded by Sphagnum bogs and was absent when pH was below 5.2. P. fruticosa avoided eutrophic conditions with rich aquatic vegetation, alkaline water (pH above 7.0), lakes with a higher content of calcium and magnesium and those with strongly coloured water (above 100 mg Pt l–1). In spite of its preference for ion-poor conditions, it was also found in a brackish water lake. For most environmental variables, the species had a wider tolerance range than reported from elsewhere.  相似文献

Summary Goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) were acclimated to environmental temperatures of 3 °C, 18 °C and 31 °C for a period of three months. Cytochemical techniques were used to study the metabolism and myofibrillar ATPase activities of individual muscle fibres. Fish muscle is composed of three basic fibre types each with distinct contractile and metabolic characteristics. Cold acclimation resulted in a shift to a more aerobic type of metabolism, particularly in the red and pink fibres. In addition, environmental temperature was found to affect the size and relative distribution of the different fibre types in the myotome. The total number of pink and red fibres increased significantly with cold acclimation. Mechanisms of environmentally-induced adaptation of muscle fibre phenotype are discussed. In addition to changes in the metabolism and distribution of muscle-fibre types, biochemical studies have provided evidence for different kinetic forms of Mg2+Ca2+ myofibrillar ATPase at different environmental temperatures. Activities of myofibrillar ATPase assayed at 31 °C were 2–3 times higher in fish acclimated to the higher environmental temperature. Activation enthalpy (H ) of the ATPase was also signficantly reduced in the cold adapted enzyme. Reduction of H in the cold acclimated ATPase is thought to reduce the temperature sensitivity of the activation process thus partly compensating for the reduced cell temperature.  相似文献

The lengths of the body, the posterior spine and the three longest anterior spines were measured for 25 specimens of Kellicottia longispina from each of the eight lakes distributed from Imikpuk at Point Barrow, Alaska (latitude 71° 15) to Lake Washington (latitude 47° 38). Collections were available for more than two dates from six of the lakes. Temperature ranged from 1.2° to 18 °C. Mean lengths and ratios were examined in relation to latitude and temperature. Each population differed from the others in some aspect of absolute size, variability, or shape as expressed by the ratios of the dimensions. The population from Point Barrow is similar but not identical to Olofsson's var. heterospina.  相似文献

Fifty-seven small- to middle-size lakes of Sweden (size-range from <0.1 to about 200 km2) representing different regions and lake-types were selected for the purpose of demonstrating the indicative value of profundal oligochaete communities also of relatively small lakes. It is well known since previously that profundal oligochaete assemblages of large lakes in Europe may be particularly indicative of the current trophic situation, but little has been known about smaller lakes in this respect. Characterizations based on oligochaete community structure in these lakes could be summarized in eight different groups: Characteristic oligochaete communities in oligotrophic lakes of relatively small size are Spirosperma ferox, Stylodrilus heringianus and Tubifex tubifex. Oligochaete species richness is low (1–3 species) and so is species abundance (<300 specimens m–2). Very eutrophic lakes of the same size-range are largely dominated by the tubificids Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and/or Potamothrix hammoniensis. Substitute or complementary species may be T. tubifex. Species richness is usually low (1–3 species), but abundance is high to very high (>5000 specimens m–2). Mesotrophic to moderately eutrophic lakes of the same size categories contain more species than the above extremes, most of them being fairly tolerant to oxygene deficiency such as Tubifex ignotus, a number of species of the genera Aulodrilus and Limnodrilus and a variety of so-called Ponto-Caspian Potamothrix species, most of them having recently invaded south-eastern Sweden. Species richness is moderate to high (4–8 species), while abundance may vary considerably (range from about 300 to about 5000 specimens m–2). In this respect, small- to middle-size lakes do not differ much from larger lakes. For the trophic characterization of lake water the mean concentrations of total-phosphorus (in g l–1) is generally regarded to be the most appropriate measure. The match between characterizations based upon oligochaete community structure and total-phosphorus concentrations is generally very good for large lakes. The present study shows that this applies fairly well also to the majority of the small- to middle-size lakes selected for this study. This has not been shown before. Obvious deviations from this rule could be caused by a scarcity of reliable chemical data, or considerable seasonal shifts in the chemical composition ot the water, which in its turn may be caused by short water residence time. Littoral elements in the fauna, which are generally less indicative, or effects of local inflows may also be more frequent here than in lakes of larger size.  相似文献

Freshwater bryozoans were investigated during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water bodies throughout Norway from 1960 to 1978. The frequency of occurrence of the two Fredericella species was evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance and absence. The typical European Fredericella sultana (with glossy statoblasts) occurred at 72 localities, north to 70° 25 N (the northernmost record on a global scale). Its frequency dropped towards the north. Maximum elevation above sea level was 1097 m (maximum recorded for Northern Europe). Another species with pitted statoblasts, tentatively considered to be Fredericella indica, occurred at 50 localities, north to 71° 09 N (the northernmost record reported to date). The geographical distribution reflected a typical northern cold-water species. One third of the 50 records were from lakes situated north of the Arctic Circle, and rich colonies were found on the North Cape plateau, as far north as possible on the European mainland. The few records from southeastern Norway were from high mountain lakes, up to 1397 m above sea level (highest record for Europe). This species was not found in any of the numerous lowland lakes investigated in southeastern Norway where F. sultana was common. Both species tolerated a cold climate, especially Fredericella indica, and they occurred in a wide range of environments. F. sultana preferred lakes with rather low elevation above sea level, rich vegetation with plant species typical for eutrophic environments, gyttja sediments and stony "hard" shores, some wave action, high content of calcium, and slightly coloured water. This species avoided ponds and was absent from ditches and mires, avoided dystrophic lakes surrounded by Sphagnum bog, with dy sediments and strongly coloured water, avoided sites with small wave action, was indifferent to magnesium and low concentrations of calcium, and was absent from lakes with pH below 5.4. F. indica was only recorded from lakes. It preferred rather low temperatures, oligotrophic conditions with poor aquatic vegetation and stony shores, some wave action, pH above 7.0, and low water colour (below 11 mg Pt l–1). This species avoided lakes with high temperatures and was absent above 20 °C, was absent where aquatic vegetation was rich or consisted of Sphagnum bog, avoided lakes with soft sediments of dygyttja and dy, places with small wave action, acid lakes, was absent at pH below 5.9, tended to avoid water with colour above 10 mg Pt l–1 and was absent in lakes with colour above 40 mg Pt l–1. F. sultana and F. indica occurred together in only six lakes, four in the north, and two in the southern mountain areas. The opposite sensitivity and reactions of the two species towards several environmental variables were supported by a logistic regression analysis. The main ecological difference between the two species is that F. indica appears to be more strongly dependent on climatic factors.  相似文献

Intensity of mineralization processes in mountain lakes in NW Slovenia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The potential and actual intensity of mineralization in sediments of fourteen mountain lakes and one subalpine lake in NW Slovenia have been measured. Potential mineralization was measured as the intensity of the electron transport system (ETS) activity of microzoobenthos and microbial communities and the actual mineralization as the oxygen consumption of respiration processes, both measured at a standard temperature of 20°C. The lakes are of different trophic levels and some exhibit seasonal anoxia. All but one are hardwater lakes. Two layers of sediment cores from the deepest point of the lakes were analysed: a surface layer and one below 15 cm. Significant differences among different lakes in their ETS activity and oxygen consumption in the surface and lower layers of sediment were observed. ETS activities and oxygen consumption rates were higher in the surface layers of all the lakes. From the three investigated deterministic factors (temperature, lake depth and total phosphorus in the water column) on sedimentary metabolism ETS activity in the surface layer correlated significantly with total phosphorus and lake depth, but oxygen consumption rate showed a significant correlation only with total phosphorus. The relationship between oxygen consumption and ETS activity was also investigated. ETS activities correlated with oxygen consumption rates according to the equation of logR = 0.421* logETS + 0.898 (r=0.82; n=30; p<0.001). The R/ETS ratio was lower at the sediment surface than in the layers deeper than 15 cm. It is concluded that ETS activity and oxygen consumption are good indicators of the intensity of the metabolic activity and mineralization in lake sediments. As the characteristics of lakes and some environmental factors influence the ETS activity and the oxygen consumption differently, the same R/ETS ratio should not be used as conversion factor in calculations for different lakes.  相似文献

Comparative limnology of Sambhar and Didwana lakes (Rajasthan,NW India)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Two alkaline saline inland lakes of Indian arid region were studied during 1984 and 1985, to assess functioning and interaction of various environmental and biological factors. Changes in physical and chemical variables, planktonic composition, chlorophyll content and phytoplankton primary productivity were examined.Salinity in both lakes fluctuated from almost fresh water (1.80), to hypersaline (300) and acted as the main controlling factor for almost all the biotic parameters. Maximum total alkalinities were 2162 mg l–1 and 2090 mg l–1, respectively in Sambhar and Didwana lakes. Dissolved oxygen ranged from completely anoxic conditions to maxima of 11.68 and 7.29 mg 1–1, respectively in Sambhar and Didwana lakes. Nutrient enrichment in the lakes was low.The phytoplankton species composition of Sambhar lake was reduced from an earlier reported 20 genera to only 11 (Nostoc, Microcystis, Spirulina, Aphanocapsa, Oscillatoria, Merismopedia, Nitzschia, Navicula, Synedra, Cosmarium and Closterium). Phytoplankton of Didwana was composed of only 9 genera including Anabaena and Nodularia. Sambhar lake, which once contained Artemia, is now totally devoid of them. On the other hand, Artemia was the most dominant zooplankter in Didwana lake at a salinity range of 15–288. Other zooplankters such as Moina, Cyclops and Brachionus flourished at lower salinity levels in Didwana lake. The seasonal quantitative and qualitative phyto- and zooplankton changes in relation to salinity are documented.  相似文献

The absorption of the lipophilic anions dipycrilamine (DPA-) and tetraphenylborate (TPhB-) by the lipid matrix of the squid axon membrane, and the kinetics of their translocation, were studied by the charge pulse relaxation technique. The axons were treated with tetrodotoxin (TTX) and 4-aminopyridine to block the ionic currents responsible for nerve excitation. At high enough concentrations of absorbed ions ( 10-12 mol/cm2) the membrane voltage relaxation following a brief current pulse consisted mainly of two exponential components, whose time constants and relative amplitudes were used for estimating the translocation rate constant, K, and the density of absorbed ions, N. These measurements were performed at different hydrostatic pressures in the range 1–100 MPa ( 1,000 atm), and at different temperatures in the range 5° C–20° C. Both K and N were found to be little affected by pressure. The pressure dependence of K indicated that the translocation of lipophilic ions across the nerve membrane involves activation volumes of the order of 5 cm3/mol. In all experiments the passive membrane resistance was little affected by pressures up to 80 MPa. However, above 100 MPa it fell dramatically to low values, presumably because of phase separation phenomena between the membrane components. The temperature dependence of K, both for DPa- and TPhB-, implied an activation energy for ion translocation of the order of 60 kJ/mol, close to that measured in artificial lipid bilayers. It is concluded that the lipid bilayer structure of the nerve membrane is not modified by pressures below 80 MPa and that the intramembrane movements of relatively small charged groups cannot account for the large activation volumes involved in the gating of ionic channels.  相似文献

Summary The Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) has partially replaced wild celery (Vallisneria americana Michx.) as a community dominant in the littoral zones of lakes of Madison, Wisconsin. The two species have very different growth forms, with that of M. spicatum corresponding more closely to the optimal growth form simulated by the macrophyte production model WEED. The objective of this research was to investigate the mechanisms by which Vallisneria could compensate for its nonoptimal growth form and coexist with Myriophyllum.A quantification of midsummer growth form for the two species at a rooting depth of 80–90 cm showed that M. spicatum had 68% of its shoot biomass within 30 cm of the surface, whereas V. americana had 62% of its leaf biomass within 30 cm of the bottom. Vallisneria had a light extinction coefficient ranging from 0.013 to 0.019 m2·g-1, much higher than the value (ca. 0.006 m2·g-1) for M. spicatum. This indicates less effective penetration of light to lower leaves of V. americana. Half-saturation constants describing the light-dependence of carbon uptake in shade and sun tissues ranged from 60–197 microeinsteins·m-2·s-1 for V. americana, and 164–365 einsteins·m-2·s-1 for M. spicatum. The optimum temperature for photosynthesis was 33.6°C for M. spicatum and 32.6°C for V. americana, but Myriophyllum was nearly twice as effective at carbon uptake at 10°C. Integration of all of the above features with WEED showed that, for midsummer conditions, V. americana more than compensated for apparently disadvantageous morphological features by its greater physiological adaptability to low light regimes. Coupled with the temperature-dependence of photosynthesis, it appears that V. americana is favored by midsummer conditions, whereas M. spicatum is at an advantage at other times.  相似文献

Phytoplankton dynamics in a deep, tropical, hyposaline lake   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The annual variation of the phytoplankton assemblage of deep (64.6 m), hyposaline (8.5 g l–1) Lake Alchichica, central Mexico (19 ° N, 97° W), was analyzed in relation to thermal regime, and nutrients concentrations. Lake Alchichica is warm monomictic with a 3-month circulation period during the dry, cold season. During the stratified period in the warm, wet season, the hypolimnion became anoxic. N–NH3 ranged between non detectable (n.d.) and 0.98 mg l–1, N–NO2 between n.d. and 0.007 mg l–1, N–NO3 from 0.1 to 1.0 mg l–1 and P–PO4 from n.d. to 0.54 mg l–1. Highest nutrient concentrations were found in the circulation period. Chlorophyll a varied from <1 to 19.8 g l–1 but most values were <5 g l–1. The euphotic zone (>1% PAR) usually comprised the top 15–20 m. Nineteen algae species were identified, most of them are typical inhabitants of salt lakes. Diatoms showed the highest species number (10) but the small chlorophyte Monoraphidium minutum, the single-cell cyanobacteria, Synechocystis aquatilis, and the colonial chlorophyte, Oocystis parva, were the numerical dominant species over the annual cycle. Chlorophytes, small cyanobacteria and diatoms dominated in the circulation period producing a bloom comparable to the spring bloom in temperate lakes. At the end of the circulation and at the beginning of stratification periods, the presence of a bloom of the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, N. spumigena, indicated nitrogen-deficit conditions. The well-stratified season was characterized by low epilimnetic nutrients levels and the dominance of small single-cell cyanobacteria and colonial chlorophytes. Phytoplankton dynamics in tropical Lake Alchichica is similar to the pattern observed in some deep, hyposaline, North American temperate lakes.  相似文献

Factors influencing the rate of superoxide (O 2 - ) production by thylakoids were investigated to determine if increased production of the radical was related to injury induced by chilling at a moderate photon flux density (PFD). Plants used were Spinacia oleracea L., Cucumis sativus L. and Nerium oleander L. grown at either 200° C or 45° C. Superoxide production was determined by electron-spin-resonance spectroscopy of the (O 2 - )-dependent rate of oxidation of 2-ethyl-1-hydroxy-2,5,5-trimethyl-3-oxazolidine (OXANOH) to the corresponding oxazolidinoxyl radical, OXANO ·. For all plants, the steady-state rate of O 2 - production by thylakoids, incubated at 25° C and 350 mol photon · m–2 · s–1 (moderate PFD) with added ferredoxin and NADP, was between 7.5 and 12.5 mol · (mg chlorophyll)–1 · h–1. Incubation at 5° C and a moderate PFD, decreased the rate of O 2 - production 40% and 15% by thylakoids from S. oleracea and 20° C-grown N. oleander, chillinginsensitive plants, but increased the rate by 56% and 5% by thylakoids from C. sativus and 45° C-grown N. oleander, chilling-sensitive plants. For all plants, the addition of either ferredoxin or methyl viologen increased the rate of O 2 - -production at 25° C by 75–100%. With these electron acceptors, lowering the temperature to 5° C caused only a slight decrease in O 2 - production. In the absence of added electron acceptors, thylakoids produced O 2 - at a rate which was about 45% greater than that when ferredoxin and NADP were present. The addition of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea reduced O 2 - production under all conditions tested. The results show that the rate of O 2 - production increases in thylakoids when the rate of electron transfer to NADP is reduced. This could explain differences in the susceptibility of thylakoids from chilling-sensitive and chilling-insensitive plants to chilling at a moderate PFD, and is consistent with the proposal that O 2 - production is involved in the injury leading to the inhibition of photosynthesis induced under these conditions.Abbreviations Chl chlorophyll - DCMU 3-(3,4-dichlorophen-yl)-1,1-dimethylurea - Fd ferredoxin - MV methyl viologen - 20°oleander Nerium oleander grown at 20° C - 45°-oleander N. oleander grown at 45° C - OXANOH 2-ethyl-1-hydroxy-2,5,5-tri-methyl-3-oxazolidine - PFD photon flux density (photon fluence rate) - TEMED tetramethyl ethylenediamine We would like to thank R.T. In vitro cultures of Nephrolepis exaltata and Cordyline fruticosa were stored at 5°, 9° or 13°C, at a low irradiance (3–5 mol m–2 s–1) or in darkness. Prior to storage the cultures were subjected to 18°, 21°, 24° or 27°C and 15, 30 or 45 mol m–2 s–1 in a factorial combination. The optimal storage conditions for Nephrolepis were 9°C in complete darkness. These cultures were still transferable to a peat/perlite mixture at the end of the experimental period of 36 months. The optimal storage conditions for Cordyline were 13°C and a low light level (±3–5 mol m-2 s-1). When the pre-storage conditions were normal growth room conditions (24°C and 30 mol m-2 s-1), in vitro cultures could be stored for 18 months. With the most favourable pre-storage treatment (18°C and 15 mol m-2 s-1) some cultures still had green shoots after 36 months of storage, but did not survive transfer to peat/perlite.Pre-conditioning before storage was most favourable for Nephrolepis, and not that important, but still favourable, for Cordyline. There was an interaction between pre-storage temperature and pre-storage irradiance. For both species a high irradiance level was less favourable than a low irradiance level when combined with high growth room temperatures.Abbreviations BA 6-benzyladenine - IAA indole-3-acetic acid - NOA 2-naphthoxyacetic acid  相似文献

Three cyanobacterial strains originating from different habitats were subjected to temperature shift exposures and monitored for levels of proline, thiol and activity of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). Thermophile Mastigocladus laminosus (growth optimum, 40 °C), raised the proline level 4.2-fold at low temperature (20 °C), for the psychrophile Nostoc 593 (growth optimum, 20 °C), it was raised 8-fold at 40 °C while in the mesophile Nostoc muscorum (growth optimum, 30 °C), the imino acid level increased 2.3-fold during temperature shiftdown to 20 °C or 3.5-fold in sets facing shiftup (40 °C). Alterations in thiol levels in the above strains were in line with proline. It is suggested that such fluctuations reflect metabolic shifts as a response to stress. Interestingly, GAPDH activity was maximum at the respective growth temperature optimum of M. laminosus (122 nmol NADPH oxidized min –1 mg –1 protein) and Nostoc 593 (141 nmol NADPH oxidized min –1 mg –1 protein) while in N. muscorum, it increased at 40 °C (101 nmol NADPH oxidized min –1 mg –1 protein) and to 93.3 nmol NADPH oxidized min –1 mg –1 protein (20 °C) relative to 86 nmol NADPH oxidized min –1 mg –1 protein at 30 °C. It seems that extremophiles maintain the GAPDH activity/level during growth at their respective temperatures optimal while the mesophile increases it in order to cope up with temperature-stress.  相似文献

Summary Phytoplankton biomass and distribution of major phytoplankton groups were investigated in relation to sea ice conditions, hydrography and nutrients along three north-south transects in the north western Weddell Sea in early spring 1988 during the EPOS Study (European Polarstern Study), Leg 1. Three different zones along the transects could be distinguished: 1) the Open Water Zone (OWZ) from 58° to 60°S with high chlorophyll a concentrations up to 3.5 g l–1; 2) the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) from 60° to about 62.5° with chlorophyll a concentrations between 0.1 and 0.3 g l–1, and 3) the closed pack-ice zone (CPI) from 62.5° to 63.2°S with chlorophyll a concentrations below 0.1 gl–1. Nutrient concentrations increased towards the south showing winter values under the closed pack-ice. Centric diatoms such as Thalassiosira gravida and Chaetoceros neglectum forming large colonies dominated the phytoplankton assemblage in terms of biomass in open water together with large, long chain forming, pennate diatoms, whereas small pennate diatoms such as Nitzschia spp., and nanoflagellates prevailed in ice covered areas. Fairly low concentrations of phytoplankton cells were encountered at the southernmost stations and many empty diatom frustules were found in the samples. The enhanced phytoplankton biomass in the Weddell-Scotia-Confluence area is achieved through sea ice melting in the frontal zone of two different water masses, the Weddell and the Scotia Sea surface waters.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Seasonal fluctuation in river stage strongly affects the ecological functioning of tropical floodplain lakes. This study was conducted to assess the influence of hydrological seasonality on bacterial production and abundance in two floodplain lakes of the Autana River, a blackwater river in the Middle Orinoco basin, Venezuela. Water samples for nutrient chemistry, chlorophyll a, and microbiological determinations were collected in two floodplain lakes and in the mainstem of the river during 1997–98. DOC and chlorophyll a concentrations were similar between mainstem and lake sites during high water when river and lakes were well connected but became different during the period of low water when the interaction was minimal. Higher values of bacterial production were observed in the floodplain lakes (0.62–1.03 g C l–1 h–1) compared to the mainstem sites (0.17–0.19 g C l–1 h–1) during the period of low water, while during the period of high water river and lake sites showed similar levels (0.04 g C l–1 h–1). Bacterial numbers followed bacterial production in the floodplain lakes, reaching higher numbers during the period of low water (1.41–2.40 × 106 cells ml–1). Availability of substrate and inorganic nutrients, pH, and inputs and losses of bacterial cells could be determining the observed seasonal patterns in bacterial production and abundance. The Autana lakes exhibited a strong seasonal pattern in the chemical and biological conditions, showing higher productivity during the lentic phase that lasted between 5 and 6 months.  相似文献

Summary The effect of the dnaN mutation on the growth of single-stranded DNA phages was studied by burst experiments. In HC138 dnaN cells exposed to 42.5° C at 5 min before infection, growth of spherical (microvirid or isometric) phages such as 3, Kh-1 and X174 was partially reduced at the nonpermissive temperature. When infection was performed at 30 min after temperature shift-up, viral replication was completely inhibited at 42.5° C in the dnaN strain but not in a dna + revertant. At 41° C, multiplication of filamentous (inovirid) phages M13 and fd was restricted specifically in HC138 F+ dnaN bacteria. When dnaN cells lysogenic for i21 were grown at 42.5° C for 60 min and then shifted down to 33° C, a burst of i21 occurred with concomitant cellular lysis, manifesting induction of the prophage development.  相似文献

Grazing rates of zooplankton were analysed in the summer of 1999 in Yellow Belly Lake, an oligotrophic system in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho (U.S.A.). The colonial rotifer Conochilus unicornis was a dominant species in the epilimnion, with densities reaching 20 colonies l–1 (ca. 400 ind. l–1). Clearance rates were measured with an in situ Haney Grazing chamber and synthetic microspheres 5, 9 and 23m in diameter. At epilimnetic temperatures of around 14 °C, mean clearance rates for 5m particles ranged from 30 to 65 l ind.–1 h –1. Clearance rates were 2–9 times higher on the 5m spheres than on the 9 m spheres, and C. unicornis almost never fed on the 23 m spheres. Grazing rates did not change over the diel cycle. Clearance rates declined more than 10-fold as temperatures declined from 14 °C in the epilimnion to 7 °C in the metalimnion. In the epilimnion, grazing by C. unicornis was more important than grazing by crustaceans in the community, at least on particles 9m. The results show the importance of grazing by rotifers in lakes, and the significance of spatial variations that influence grazing rates.  相似文献

The littoral benthos of 18 lakes in Alberta and Saskatchewan ranging in salinity from 3 to 126 (g1–1 TDS) were investigated twice, in the spring and in the summer of 1986. Multiple Ekman dredge samples were taken at water depths of about 0.5, 1.0 and 2 metres in each transect. Two to three transects were used in each lake according to its estimated limnological diversity for a total of 114 stations. A total of 76 species was present varying from 29–31 species in the three lakes of lowest salinity (means of 3.1–5.55) to only 2 species in lakes exceeding 100. Species richness decreased rapidly in salinities greater than 15.Biomass maximum mean of 10.91 g m–2 dry weight (maximum 63.0 g m–2) occurred in culturally eutrophic Humboldt Lake (3.1) but one third as great in other low salinity lakes. However, biomass again increased to about 4.5 gm–2 in two lakes of 15 As the salinity increased still further biomass declined steadily until a minimum of 0.0212 g m–2 was recorded in most saline Aroma Lake (mean 119). Summer biomass (11 lakes) was greater than spring biomass (4 lakes) because some groups such as amphipods, corixids and ostracods became more abundant in summer. Wet weight biomass averaged 15.8 of dry weight biomass.Seasonality (spring or summer), sediment texture and organic matter content, water depth, pH, salinity (TDS) and the presence of aquatic plants ( plant cover) were considered in the matrix involving species dry weight biomass at each of 117 stations. TWINSPAN classification of the samples yielded a dendrogram with 18 indicator species. Successive dichotomies divided these indicator species into four main lake groups based on salinity, i.e., Group I: 3–10 (Gammarus, Glyptotendipes I, Chironomus cf. plumosus), Group II: 10–38%. (Hyalella, Enallagma,Bezzia), Group III: 38–63 (Hygrotus salinarius, Cricotopus ornatus), Group IV: >63 (Dolichopodidae, Ephydra hians). Each of these main groups was subdivided into smaller groups of lakes based on factors such as pH, seasonality (spring or summer species dominance), organic matter and plant cover. Depth of samples played no apparent role.  相似文献
