Captive groups of primates often exhibit higher rates of aggression than wild, free-ranging groups. It is important to determine which factors influence aggression in captivity because aggression, particularly intense aggression, can be harmful to animal health and well-being. In this study, we investigated the effect of ground substrate as well as season, rank, age, and group size on rates of agonistic interactions per female in seven captive groups of rhesus macaques (n = 70 females, 1,723 focal samples) at the California National Primate Research Center. Agonistic interactions were divided into three categories: displacements, mild aggression, and intense aggression. Females living in enclosures with gravel substrate were 1.7 times more likely to be involved in intense aggression (e.g. chases and physical contact) than females living in enclosures with grass (Poisson regression model: P < 0.001). High-ranking females were at least 1.3 times more likely to be involved in mild (e.g. threats and lunges) aggression than lower-ranking females (low rank: P = 0.03; mid rank: P = 0.001). Females of all ranks were 1.5-1.9 times more likely to be involved in both intense and mild aggression during the breeding season than other seasons. Age and group size did not affect rates of mild or intense aggression. These findings indicate that although some aggression appears to be natural and unavoidable, i.e. aggression during the breeding season, the well-being of captive macaques can be improved by developing grass substrate in outdoor enclosures.  相似文献

A captive group of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) was observed during the breeding season to determine if consortship behavior, rather than promiscuous matings, resulted in higher reproductive success for either partner. The 38 adult females in this group were observed “in consort” with the 5 adult or 4 subadult males on 179 occasions. Most of these consortships were short-term, lasting less than one day. Six females engaged in consortships with one male that spanned more than three days, but the majority of these long-term associations did not result in a pregnancy with that male. The term “consortship” has been traditionally accepted as a specific nonhuman primate mating pattern, but the exact nature of this behavioral pattern and its evolutionary importance have been less clearly understood. Consort behavior could be considered a precursor to a monogamous mating system if long-term exclusive sexual associations resulted in higher reproductive success for the participants. But this study demonstrates that for rhesus macaques, who exhibit both consort behavior and more promiscuous matings, there is no clear reproductive advantage to long-term consortships. In light of the inconsistent use of the term consortship, the possible adaptive significance of an exclusive male-female sexual association for the evolution of human mating patterns needs to be reevaluated.  相似文献

For most of the 18 years recorded, fewer than 50% of the adult females gave birth in any one year. The colony, of 6 social groups, showed a clear-cut breeding season. Female parity and dominance had no effect on breeding rate, though 1st infants were born earlier in the year than 2nd-born ones. Only when females gave birth in successive years were the months of giving birth correlated. Mothers and daughters may tend to give birth closer in time within a breeding season than do other females.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the matrilineal affiliation of 410 infants born in three captive groups of rhesus macaques is independent of the patrilineal affiliation of these infants was tested. Preferential mating with particular patrilines was observed for matrilineal members. We conclude that lineage affiliation does influence mate choice of rhesus macaques, at least when a large number of matrilines and relatively few patrilines which include natal males are represented in the group. Such nonrandom mating might explain high levels of genetic heterogeneity reported among matrilines within rhesus groups, despite high rates of male emigration, and is consistent with the maintenance of high levels of within-matriline kinship which might promote cooperative behavior among matriline members.  相似文献

The extent of heritability for overall brain size and regional cortical surface features such as sulcus lengths is important for demonstrating a genetic component to the observed phenotypic differences among individuals and for evaluating the potential for evolutionary change in response to selection. Although the genetics of brain size has been extensively considered, the detailed morphology of the cortical surface has not previously been subjected to genetic analysis. We estimated the heritability of brain size and cortical sulcus lengths using 438 endocranial casts taken from skeletons of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) from the Cayo Santiago population. Estimates were obtained both by mother-offspring regression and symmetric-differences-squared (SDS) methods. Brain size, measured as cranial capacity, was highly and significantly heritable in this population, confirming results of previous studies with laboratory mice. Overall, cortical sulcus lengths were also heritable, with 35% of the sulci significantly heritable at the 5% level in the mother-offspring analysis. The average mother-offspring heritability estimate, 0.31, was the same as the average heritability obtained previously from a series of 56 cranial metric characters. The SDS analyses generally corresponded to the findings based on mother-offspring regressions, although the significance test appeared more conservative. Both gross and detailed morphology of the brain are heritable.  相似文献

An abnormal behavior pattern (covering the eyes with one or both hands) is studied in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). In adults, the eye covering pattern is more frequent and less variable in form than in youngsters; in addition, intermediate forms with play are observed. The frequency of eye covering increases when subjects are placed in an aversive situation (social isolation) and decreases when they perform another behavior (feeding). At the same time, eye covering increases in the evening due to the anticipation of light-dark transition by subjects. The spread of eye covering by way of social transmission is considered.  相似文献

We describe some of the sources of variation in gestation length among rhesus macaques. the data were obtained from the timed-mating breeding program at the California Regional Primate Research Center (CRPRC). Information about approximately 700 pregnancies that resulted in spontaneous vaginal deliveries of liveborn young is presented. The average length of these pregnancies was 166.5 days. In this population, older females with higher parities had significantly longer pregnancies and significantly heavier infants than other females did. Other factors, including infant sex, month of conception, maternal reproductive history, and paternal identity, had no consistent effect upon gestation length.  相似文献

Late-prophase high-resolution chromosomes were successfully cultured for 22 of 27 Macaca mulatta samples. Twelve of the successful cultures were adequate for karyotyping high-resolution spreads. High-resolution chromosome technique provides an important contribution to primate genetics because it can be used to identify chromosomal anomalies undetected in metaphase spreads and may be useful for paternity exclusion analysis.  相似文献

Identifying changes with age in physiological variables of captive nonhuman primates will aid in the proper treatment and clinical diagnosis of these animals, as well as enhance our understanding of nonhuman primate models for human aging. Information for 33 physiological variables was obtained from the Primate Aging Database, a multi-centered database being developed for clinical and research use. Using multiple regression analyses, we investigated the relationship of age to hematological variables, blood chemistry and body weight in 345 captive rhesus monkeys (age range 7-30 years) from three different primate research facilities. The analyses revealed that 15 of these variables show a significant relationship with chronological age and are altered in older as compared with adult animals. Here we present the first phase of a project that will: a) identify changes with age in physiological variables among adult captive rhesus macaques; and b) characterize normative values for the aging rhesus population.  相似文献

To preserve genetic variability and minimize genetic subdivision among captive Macaca mulatta at each of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored regional research colonies, the genetic structure of each colony must be characterized. To compare population genetic and demographic parameters across colonies and generations, one standard panel of highly informative genetic markers is required. We assembled a core marker set of four multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) panels comprising 15 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci with high information content selected from existing panels of well-characterized markers that are currently used for parentage assessment and genetic management of rhesus macaques. We then assessed the effectiveness of these loci for providing high probabilities of individual identification and parentage resolution, and for estimating population genetic parameters that are useful for genetic management.  相似文献

Endocasts from skulls of 330 rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) of known age are scored for closure of nine bilateral and three unilateral sutures or segments of sutures. A variety of tests reveals a strong relationship between age and stages of suture closure, although increasingly broad confidence intervals prevent sutures from being very useful for precisely aging older macaques. The order in which endosutures begin to close, as well as that in which closure is finally achieved, is determined for macaques, and these sequences compared to those for endosutures of humans (Todd and Lyon, 1924). The basilar suture is the earliest to close, while the masto-occipital and rostral and caudal squamosal sutures achieve closure quite late in both species. On the other hand, humans and macaques differ in their schedules for the sphenofrontal suture and in the initiation of closure for the rostral portion of the squamosal suture. Two sutures close significantly sooner on the right than on the left side (the rostral squamosal and masto-occipital) and asymmetry favoring closure of the right lateral lambdoid suture also approaches significance at the 0.05 level. No sutures close significantly sooner on the left side. It is suggested that macaque sutures may close from the inside out, that endosutures are more sensitive than ectosutures for detecting sequences in which cranial sutures begin to close, and that directional asymmetries in suture closure of macaques may be related to minor asymmetries in brain/skull shape (petalias).  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Severe disseminated vasculopathy was observed in two simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). These animals developed clinical signs of AIDS, including lymphadenopathy, weight loss, diarrhea and collapse. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Grossly, both animals showed emaciation, lymphadenopathy, vegetations on the mitral valve, renal infarcts and a dilated intestine; one animal had multifocal hemorrhages in multiple organs. Histologically, both cases had disseminated arteriopathy characterized by intimal thickening and fibrosis with varying degrees of vasculitis. The lesion was prominent in the kidney, intestine, pancreas, liver, heart, lymph nodes, spleen and testis. Occasional venules had intimal thickening. Both cases had cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection with intranuclear inclusions, CMV antigen and nucleic acid; some inclusions were observed in endothelial cells within some of the vascular lesions in one of the two. These data suggest that CMV caused the unusual lesions.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that affiliative contact between opponents increases after conflicts in a number of primate species. This study investigated the effect of inter-opponent distance on the occurence of reconciliation in stumptail and rhesus macaques. Both species were represented by multi-male, multi-female groups housed in large outdoor compounds. Ten-minute focal animal observations during post-conflict (PC) and matched control (MC) samples were collected in which affiliative interactions and the inter-opponent distance at the beginning of each sample were recorded. A total of 251 and 561 PC-MC opponent pairs were obtained for stumptail and rhesus macaques, respectively. Inter-opponent distance was smaller in PC than in MC observations for both stumptail and rhesus macaques. Conciliatory tendency varied as a function of the initial PC-MC inter-opponent distance. In particular, the closer opponents were in PC compared to MC periods, the more likely they were to reconcile. When the inter-opponent distance was the same in PC and MC periods the conciliatory tendency of both species was notably reduced. These findings have implications for the estimation of conciliatory tendency and its use in comparative studies.  相似文献

Due to primate adaptations for sociality, captive rhesus macaques have optimal welfare and utility as a biomedical model when they can be maintained in outdoor social groups. As a despotic species; however, aggression can result in costly injuries and may result in temporary or permanent removal of specific individuals from social housing. Enrichment items, such as toys, climbing structures, and foraging material, are employed to keep captive animals occupied. We hypothesized that produce enrichment that requires more processing to extract may reduce socially‐derived injuries by keeping animals occupied. We tested the effects of additional weekly produce (corn‐in‐husk, whole melon, or whole squash) on trauma incidence in an outdoor social group of rhesus macaques across two distinct seasons (mating and birthing seasons) at the California National Primate Research Center. Aggression and status behavioral data, food resource use and proximity, and trauma incidence were collected over two 16‐week periods, with eight control and treatment conditions alternating biweekly. Mixed‐effects regression modeling was used to determine the best predictors of trauma risk and severe aggression at the group level and at an individual level. We found that food resource use was an important predictor of trauma risk at both group and individual levels; greater use of food resources reduced trauma risk. Produce enrichment did not; however, reduce severe aggression. We suggest that other captive social groups of rhesus macaques with high levels of trauma may benefit from supplemental produce enrichment that increases animal engagement with food resources.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of rhesus monkeys,Macaca mulatta, was studied between 1978 and 1981. The study site, located in the Murree Hills of northwestern Pakistan, supported a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest community and was characterized by a high degree of human disturbance. We used a linear transect method to sample the species composition and structure of the vegetation. Comparison of these data with historical records showed that the forest has undergone major changes in the last hundred years. Data on feeding behavior were collected through on-the-minute focal animal sampling. The monkeys spent about 45% of the day feeding. Their preferred foods were grass, clover, and other ground herbs that occur in the disturbed sites. Fruit accounted for less than 9% of feeding records. The rhesus monkey may be pre-adapted to living in disturbed-site, forest-edge communities. The evolutionary history of Macaca mulatta may be tied closely to the disappearance of forest and the spread of meadows and savannahs over the last million years.  相似文献

Genetic characterization of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in Nepal   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Indian-origin rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) have long served as an animal model for the study of human disease and behavior. Given the current shortage of Indian-origin rhesus, many researchers have turned to rhesus macaques from China as a substitute. However, a number of studies have identified marked genetic differences between the Chinese and Indian animals. We investigated the genetic characteristics of a third rhesus population, the rhesus macaques of Nepal. Twenty-one rhesus macaques at the Swoyambhu Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal, were compared with more than 300 Indian- and Chinese-origin rhesus macaques. The sequence analyses of two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) loci, from the HVS I and 12 S rRNA regions, showed that the Nepali animals were more similar to Indian-origin than to Chinese-origin animals. The distribution of alleles at 24 short tandem repeat (STR) loci distributed across 17 chromosomes also showed greater similarity between the Nepali and Indian-origin animals. Finally, an analysis of seven major histocompatibility complex (MHC) alleles showed that the Nepali animals expressed Class I alleles that are common to Indian-origin animals, including Mamu-A*01. All of these analyses also revealed a low level of genetic diversity within this Nepali rhesus sample. We conclude that the rhesus macaques of Nepal more closely resemble rhesus macaques of Indian origin than those of Chinese origin. As such, the Nepali rhesus may offer an additional resource option for researchers who wish to maintain research protocols with animals that possess key genetic features characteristic of Indian-origin rhesus macaques.  相似文献

Control of intestinal parasites is a major concern in maintaining the health and well-being of captive primates. This study established that percutaneous application of ivermectin was as effective as subcutaneous administration for the control of nematodes in captive rhesus macaques. The method is less intrusive than the standard subcutaneous or oral delivery routes and did not adversely affect the health of any of the study subjects.  相似文献

The age-related incidence of malignant neoplasia was surveyed from a total of 301 necropsy cases of rhesus monkeys ranging in age from 13–37 years performed in the Pathology Service Unit of the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center during the past 15 years. All our aged monkeys lived in indoor cages and were fed with monkey chow and supplemental fruits during the past decades. In this survey, we found a total of 51 malignant neoplasms, and among them 25 cases were colon cancer. The incidence of colon cancer increased with advancing age: 3.2% at 13–19 years, 9.2% at 20–25 years, 13.5% at 26–29 years, and 20.7% at 30–37 years. Most cancers were located in the cecum and transverse regions with a unicentric origin. Two multicentric cases were associated with chronic hypertrophic colitis. Precancerous polypous lesions were not found in all cases. Histologically, all cases were mucinous adenocarcinoma and had local invasion to the muscular wall. Metastasis to the mesenteric lymph nodes was found in only two cases. As in humans, colon cancer is a common outcome of aging in nonhuman primates. Am. J.
