Total and per gram fecal corticosteroid concentrations were determined for agouti and non-agouti deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus gracilis) over 24 h under normal caging conditions and after exposure to the stress of novel caging. Per gram corticosteroid concentrations, fecal output, and 24-h corticosteroid production were greater in stressed compared with unstressed deer mice of both color morphs, whereas stressed agoutis had a greater increase in per gram corticosteroid concentrations when compared with non-agoutis. However, due to increased fecal output, stressed non-agouti deer mice had greater 24-h corticosteroid production. Thus, agouti and non-agouti deer mice differ in their hormonal reaction to stress. This is the first demonstration of corticosteroid differences associated with the agouti locus.  相似文献

Total thyroxine was assessed by radioimmunoassay for 58 female deer mice of two subspecies (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii and P. m. gracilis) and two color morphs (agouti and non-agouti). P. m. bairdii of both color-morphs had significantly higher mean thyroxine levels than P. m. gracilis. Non-agouti deer mice of both subspecies had significantly higher mean thyroxine levels than agouti deer mice. This is the first report of thyroid hormone differences associated with the non-agouti allele.  相似文献

以2015年1月至12月捕自四川荥经县的310只成体赤腹松鼠(Callosciurus erythraeus,雄鼠174只,雌鼠136只)为研究对象,分析了其体重及7种内脏器官湿重的性别和季节差异,以及妊娠对内脏器官湿重的影响。1)雌、雄鼠的体重无性别和季节差异。2)心湿重雌、雄鼠差异显著,春季雄性大于雌性,夏季相反;肝、脾、肺和肾的湿重均无性别差异。3)肝湿重夏、冬季高于春、秋季;脾湿重秋季高于冬季和春季;肺湿重春季最高,夏季最低;肾湿重冬、春季高于夏季;心湿重雄鼠秋季高于夏、冬季,雌鼠夏、秋季高于冬季;睾丸和子宫湿重都在春季最高,秋季最低。4)妊娠鼠肝、肺和肾湿重均高于未妊娠鼠。结果表明,随着季节更替赤腹松鼠的体重维持稳定,雌、雄鼠心湿重差异显著,且器官湿重表现出了一定的弹性,这可能与雌、雄鼠的繁殖状态及季节性环境的多样性变化有关。  相似文献

The genetics of coat colors in the mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Genetic studies demonstrated three loci controlling coat colors in the Mongolian gerbil. F1 hybrids of white gerbils with red eyes and agouti gerbils with wild coat color had the agouti coat color. The segregating ratio of agouti and white in the F2 generation was 3:1. In the backcross (BC) generation (white x F1), the ratio of the agouti and white coat colors was 1:1. Next, inheritance of the agouti coat color was investigated. Matings between agouti and non-agouti (black) gerbils produced only agouti gerbils. In the F2 generation, the ratio of agouti to non-agouti (black) was 3:1. There was no distortion in the sex ratios within each coat color in the F1, F2 and BC generations. This indicated that the white coat color of gerbils is governed by an autosomal recessive gene which should be named the c allele of the c (albino) locus controlling pigmentation, and the agouti coat color is controlled by an autosomal dominant gene which might be named the A allele of the A (agouti) locus controlling pigmentation patterns in the hair. The occurrence of the black gerbil demonstrated clearly the existence of the b (brown) locus, and it clearly indicated that the coat colors of gerbils can basically be explained by a, b, and c loci as in mice and rats.  相似文献

异温动物的体温和内脏器官重量与其所处的环境密切相关,具有一定的可塑性。本文以活捕于鲁西南山区的东北刺猬为对象,比较了其体温和内脏器官的性别差异和季节变化,旨在了解其对环境的适应性特征。结果表明:1)东北刺猬的体温以夏季最高,且与环境温度呈正相关关系,但性别间无差异;2)东北刺猬的肥满度指数以春季最高,秋季最低,亦无性别差异;3)东北刺猬的内脏器官重量与体重呈显著的正相关关系,雌雄脾脏重量以春季最大,夏季最小;4)季节与性别间交互作用对肾上腺重量的影响显著,雄体睾丸和附睾秋季最轻,雌体子宫则秋季最轻;5)雌体心率显著高于雄体,无季节性差异;非冬眠期心电图中各个波持续时间无性别差异,QRS 波群和T 波的持续时间在秋季显著长于夏季和春季,S - T 段相反,秋季最短。本文研究结果提示:东北刺猬非冬眠期的心率与体温变化无关,心脏功能受季节变化影响较小。体温、肥满度、脾脏、睾丸和附睾、子宫、心电等生理指标的可塑性对于东北刺猬适应环境具有重要意义。  相似文献

We examined the thermoregulatory responses of male and female mice Mus musculus that had been divergently selected on voluntary food intake, corrected for body mass, to produce a high-intake and a low-intake strain. Resting metabolic rate was determined by indirect calorimetry (at 30 degrees C, 25 degrees C, 15 degrees C and 5 degrees C). Body temperature responses were measured in a separate group of mice in a parallel protocol. High-intake mice had significantly elevated body masses compared to low-intake mice in both sexes. Lower critical temperature in both strains appeared to be around 28 degrees C. At 30 degrees C there was a significant strain effect on resting metabolic rate, with high strain mice having greater metabolism than low strain mice. Sex and body mass were not significant main effects on resting metabolic rate and there were no significant interactions. Body temperature measured at 30 degrees C, 25 degrees C, 15 degrees C and 5 degrees C differed significantly between sexes (females higher) and there was a significant sexxbody mass interaction effect, but there was no difference between strains. Thermal conductance was significantly related to strain and sex, mice from the high strain and males having greater thermal conductances than mice from the low strain and females. Artificial selection has resulted in high-intake mice having greater body masses and greater thermal conductances, which together account for up to 45% of the elevated daily energy demands that underpin the increase in food intake. The greater levels of food intake were also associated with higher resting metabolic rates at 30 degrees C.  相似文献

All laboratory golden hamsters originate from a sibling pairing back in 1930. To investigate possible differences between domesticated and wild conspecifics, descendants of both strains were maintained under standardized laboratory conditions individually and in unisexual groups. Body mass and food consumption were monitored from birth to 22 weeks of age. The animals were subsequently sacrificed, and body measurements and body composition were analysed. In addition, the absolute and relative masses of different organs were measured. Laboratory hamsters gained more body mass through higher food consumption. However, they did not get fatter, since relative fat values were the same for both strains. Body measurements revealed only minor differences (in body and ear lengths). As deducible from the body mass, the organs (spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, testes, epididymis and ovaries) were seen to be heavier in laboratory hamsters. Furthermore, with the exception of the kidneys, the same went for the relative values. There were distinct sexual specific differences in both strains only for body fat ( male symbol male symbol upward arrow ) and adrenal glands ( male symbol male symbol upward arrow ). In females, group housing induced an elevated level of aggression. In general, these housing conditions led to social stress symptoms, such as heavier adrenal glands. Additionally, spleen, kidneys, ovaries, body length and mass, body water and body fat were increased in group-housed hamsters. In conclusion, no major differences between laboratory and wild-derived hamsters were observed.  相似文献

Agouti is a common pigmentation phenotype in mammals including primates. Mutations in the agouti signaling protein gene (ASIP) are known to result in non-agouti black hairs in laboratory mice. It is still unclear whether sequence variation in ASIP is linked with the agouti/non-agouti phenotypes in macaques (Genus Macaca). To address this issue, we have determined and compared nucleotide sequences of protein coding region of ASIP in 18 macaque species and have identified 16 different sequences of the ASIP. Macaca nemestrina, which showed yellow agouti hairs, shared an identical amino acid sequence of ASIP with several non-agouti species. No sequence changes were found in functionally important sites of ASIP in the macaques showing non-agouti dark hair color. These results indicated that the variation in the protein coding region of ASIP did not explain the non-agouti dark coat color in the macaques. Upstream regulatory regions of ASIP and other genes participating in pigmentation system remain to be investigated for the hair color variation in the macaques.  相似文献

为了研究种群密度对东方田鼠(Microtus fortis)内脏器官(心、肺、肝、脾、肾、肾上腺)的影响,随机选取稳定的同性别饲养群的成年东方田鼠258只,雌雄各半,分A组30笼:2只/笼,B组15笼:4只/笼,C组11笼:6只/笼和D组9笼:8只/笼共4个密度组,饲养90d后解剖,取内脏器官,称重以及测定血浆皮质醇浓度并进行比较。结果表明:在相同密度内,除B组孕鼠的肝脏重较未孕鼠有极显著差异外,其它各组(A、C、D)怀孕鼠和未孕鼠的各内脏器官重均无显著差异。在不同密度间,怀孕鼠的肝脏重有极显著差异,孕鼠与未孕鼠的其余各内脏器官均无显著差异;雄鼠的肺重、脾脏重和雌鼠的脾脏重、肾上腺重差异显著,其余各器官重在不同密度间虽未表现出显著差异,但均具有随着密度增加而器官重量逐渐增大的趋势。各个密度组中的雄性个体血浆皮质醇浓度分别显著高于雌性,且差异显著;同一性别比较,不同密度间的雌性个体血浆皮质醇浓度差异不显著,而雄性个体血浆皮质醇浓度差异则显著,随密度增大而明显增加。可见高密度压力导致内脏器官重量上有所调节,但不同脏器受密度因素影响程度不同。  相似文献

Body mass is a key determinant of fitness components in many organisms, and adult mass varies considerably among individuals within populations. These variations have several causes, involve temporal and spatial factors, and are not yet well understood. We use long-term data from 20 roe deer cohorts (1977-96) in a 2600 ha study area (Chizé, western France) with two habitats contrasting in quality (rich oak forest in the North versus poor beech forest in the South) to analyse the effects of both cohort and habitat quality on adult mass (i.e. median body mass between 4 and 10 years of age) of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Cohort strongly influenced the adult body mass of roe deer in both sexes: males born in 1994 were 5.2 kg heavier when aged between 4 and 10 years old than males born in 1986, while females born in 1995 were 4.7 kg heavier between 4 and 10 years old than females born in 1982. For a given cohort, adult males were, on average, 0.9 kg heavier in the rich oak forest than in the poor beech forest. A similar trend occurred for adult females (0.5 kg heavier in the oak forest). The effects of cohort and habitat were additive and accounted for ca. 40% of the variation observed in the adult mass of roe deer at Chizé (males: 41.2%; females: 40.2%). Population density during the spring of the birth accounted for about 35% of cohort variation, whereas rainfall in May-June had no effect. Such delayed effects of density at birth on adult body mass probably affect population dynamics, and might constitute a mechanism by which delayed density-dependence occurs in ungulate populations.  相似文献

对洞庭湖区社鼠(Niviventer confucianus)野外自然种群脏器的重量指标进行了测定,并比较了其在年龄组、性别、季节及生境间的差异。结果表明,社鼠内脏(心、肺、肝、脾、肾脏)随着年龄组的增加,重量有明显的增加,其重量与体重有极其显著的相关性。两性间的脏器重量指标没有显著性差异。脏器季节变化的共同特征是夏季脏器重量较低,四季间比较,仅有心脏重量有显著的季节变化。生境间心脏和肾脏重量的变化相对较大,达显著水平。参与繁殖与未参与繁殖的雌鼠相比,心、肺、肝、肾脏的各项指标均较高,脾脏则相反,但均未有显著性差异。总的来看,洞庭湖社鼠种群的脏器指标相对稳定,尽管重量指标随着年龄组而增加,受性别、季节、生境及繁殖行为的影响相对较小。  相似文献

Body size and condition of coyotes (Canis latrans) from a high-density population in Webb County, Texas (USA) were analyzed for age, sex and seasonal differences during 1980 to 1986. Mean body mass was progressively greater for juvenile, yearling and adult coyotes. Males were heavier and longer than females in each age class. Indices of intraperitoneal fat deposits were similar between sexes. Juveniles continued growth from fall to spring. Adults and yearlings both lost intraperitoneal fat overwinter. Mean body mass of adults decreased overwinter but mass of yearlings did not differ significantly between fall and spring. Territorial and transient female coyotes did not differ in mean body mass, length or indices of subcutaneous fat deposits.  相似文献

Recently, much interest has been expressed in understanding how animals use phenotypic plasticity of tissue size and function to meet increased metabolic demands. We set out to learn (i) whether female deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) given lactation (two to seven pups per litter), cold (5 degrees C), or cold plus lactation as energy demands display phenotypic plasticity in organ size and function; (ii) whether that plasticity is similar to laboratory mice given the same demands; and (iii) whether lactational performance in deer mice is derived from limits on central or peripheral organs. We found that deer mice responded to lactation by increasing digestible food intake and increasing the masses of the stomach, small intestine, cecum and liver, and the length of the small intestine. Heart mass was lower in lactating than in nonlactating mice. Cold exposure also caused increases in digestible food intake and increases in the masses of the small intestine, kidney, and heart. We conclude that deer mice display organ tissue plasticity in response to both lactation and cold exposure in a similar manner to laboratory mice. We also conclude that deer mice are not limited by central processing organs because they are able to increase digestive organ size continuously with increased energetic demands.  相似文献

We tested the influence of population density and of drought intensity (measured as the Gaussen Index in spring and summer of the year of birth) on winter body mass, hind foot length, and body condition of roe deer fawns. Body mass decreased with increasing density and increased with increasing Gaussen Index in summer, in a similar way for both males and females. Hind foot length of males showed the same response. On the other hand, hind foot length of females decreased with increasing density only after dry summers, hence when environmental conditions were very harsh. Body condition was affected neither by density nor by drought intensity. Our results indicate that body mass and size are much better indicators of phenotypic quality than body condition in roe deer. The sex-specific responses of body size to environmental conditions could correspond to a differential allocation in favour of daughters by heavier than average roe deer mothers.  相似文献

A new autosomal recessive coat color mutant in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) is described: recessive yellow. On the dorsal side the mutant has a rich yellow to ginger color. Ventrally it shows the typical creamy white belly of a wild-type Mongolian gerbil. The dorsal yellow hairs have short black tips, and a light olive green base. A clear demarcation line between dorsal and ventral color is present. Crosses between recessive yellow animals and multiple homozygous recessive tester animals (a/a; cchm/cchm; g/g; p/p) resulted only in animals of an agouti (wild-type) phenotype, showing that the new allele is not allelic with any of the known coat color mutations in the Mongolian gerbil. Molecular studies showed that the new mutant is caused by a missence mutation at the extension (E) locus. On a non-agouti background (a/a; e/e) mutant animals look like a dark wild-type agouti. In contrast to wild-type agouti it shows yellow pigmentation and dark ticking at the ventral side, resulting in the absence of a demarcation line. Since black pigment is present in both the agouti and non-agouti variant (A/A; e/e and a/a; e/e), we conclude that recessive yellow in the Mongolian gerbil is non-epistatic to agouti. Additionally we describe a second mutation at the same locus leading to a similar phenotype, however without black pigment and diminishing yellow pigment during life. Fertility and viability of both new mutants are within normal range. The extension (E) gene is known to encode the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R). Interestingly, this is the only gene that is known to account for substantial variation in skin and hair color in humans. Many different mutations are known of which some are associated with higher skin cancer incidence.  相似文献

The evolutionary origin of the long neck of giraffes is enigmatic. One theory (the 'sexual selection' theory) is that their shape evolved because males use their necks and heads to achieve sexual dominance. Support for this theory would be that males invest more in neck and head growth than do females. We have investigated this hypothesis in 17 male and 21 female giraffes with body masses ranging from juvenile to mature animals, by measuring head mass, neck mass, neck and leg length and the neck length to leg length ratio. We found no significant differences in any of these dimensions between males and females of the same mass, although mature males, whose body mass is significantly (50%) greater than that of mature females, do have significantly heavier (but not longer) necks and heavier heads than mature females. We conclude that morphological differences between males and females are minimal, that differences that do exist can be accounted for by the larger final mass of males and that sexual selection is not the origin of a long neck in giraffes.  相似文献

Many vertebrate species exhibit alternative phenotypes (or morphs), in which one sex displays phenotypic variation equal to or greater than the variation between the sexes. Males in such species typically display differences in reproductive strategies and morphology. Steroid hormones such as testosterone are known modulators of reproductive behavior and morphology and therefore are obvious candidates for the mediation of phenotypic differences between morphs. We conducted a year-round study in the white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) that exhibits alternative phenotypes in plumage coloration and behavior in both sexes: during the breeding season, white-striped males and females are more aggressive and have higher song rates than tan-striped individuals. At the beginning of the breeding season, free-living white-striped males had higher plasma testosterone concentrations than tan-striped males. However, this finding might have been due to different social experiences because captive male morphs sampled at similar times of year did not differ in testosterone concentrations. Captive white-striped males had larger testis and cloacal protuberance sizes than tan-striped males, which might be related to the divergent mating strategies of the morphs. Male morphs showed similar increases in luteinizing hormone following injections of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, but white-striped males showed larger increases in testosterone, indicating differences between morphs in gonadal testosterone production. Females had low concentrations of testosterone, and morphs did not differ. Plasma dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) concentrations were elevated in both sexes and morphs during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. These data do not support the hypothesis that testosterone activates behavioral differences between alternative phenotypes in the white-throated sparrow. Alternative testable hypotheses include hormonal effects during early development and direct genetic effects.  相似文献

Meprin is a membrane-bound metalloproteinase which is expressed at high levels in the brush border membrane of proximal tubules of kidneys of some mouse strains (referred to as high meprin-activity mice). The mature active proteinase is not present in kidneys of many inbred strains of mice; however, these low meprin-activity mice possess a kidney protein that crossreacts with polyclonal antibodies prepared against meprin. In the present studies, immunohistochemical methods were used to determine the presence of meprin in liver, pancreas, spleen, testis, thymus, kidney, salivary glands, stomach, duodenum, and skin. Meprin crossreactivity was observed only in kidney and salivary glands. In salivary glands, the enzyme was found on the luminal surface of intercalated and striated ducts of submandibular and parotid glands and on interlobular ducts of the latter. In both kidney and salivary glands, the intensity of immunochemical staining was greater in males compared with females. For both sexes, immunoreactivity was markedly greater in the high meprin-activity mice compared to the low meprin-activity mice. These studies indicate that meprin has a limited tissue distribution, and that genetic and hormonal factors that regulate the proteinase are similar in kidney and salivary glands. The localization of the proteinase implies that the enzyme functions in modifying proteins and peptides that are secreted or re-absorbed in the ducts of these tissues.  相似文献

Levels of norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) were measured by HPLC from the cortex, striatum and brain stem of agouti and nonagouti deermice (Peromyscus maniculatus gracilis). In the brain stem, agouti animals exhibited significantly higher NE whereas nonagouti animals had significantly higher DA. In contrast, agouti deermice had nearly twice the DA levels of nonagouti animals in both the cortex and striatum. Levels of cortical and striatal NE were similar in both color morphs, although NE in nonagouti animals was 8% higher and less variable. The variability of both NE and DA was much lower in the brain stem than in either the striatum or the cortex. This is the first evidence of a pleiotropic effect of the agouti coat-color locus on brain catecholamines.  相似文献

The effects of selection of agouti rats (with genotype AAHH) on the tame and aggressive behavior and dietary methyl given to females from the eighth day of pregnancy to the fifth day after the birth of the offspring on the intensity of the agouti coat color in the offspring have been studied. The morphometric parameters of hair determining the darkness of the agouti color (the total length of guard hairs, the lengths of their eumelanin end and pheomelanin band, the ratio between the lengths of the eumelanin and pheomelanin portions of the hair, the total length of the awn hairs, and the relative length of their widened “lanceolate” upper end) have been compared. It has been found that selection of agouti rats for aggressive behavior is accompanied by darkening of the coat color compared to tame rats due to an increase in the ratio of the length of the black eumelanin end of the guard hairs to the length of the yellow pheomelanin band. Methyl-containing additives to the diet of females affect the intensity of the agouti coat color in the offsprings with both types of behavior, but to different extents. Aggressive offspring is more sensitive to the mother’s methyl-containing diet: the percentage of animals that are darker than control rats is higher among aggressive animals than among tame ones due to a greater increase in the ratio between dark and light portions of hairs. The possible mechanisms of differences in the phenotypic modifications of coat color in control and experimental agouti rats with different types of behavior are discussed.  相似文献
