A basic paradigm in behavioral ecology is that organisms expand their distribution as preferred sites become saturated with individuals that reduce the availability of resources (e.g., shelter, prey) on a per capita basis. Previous fish community studies at Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary have shown that juvenile Acadian redfish Sebastes fasciatus (<20cm total length; TL) were primarily associated with boulder reefs that have deep interstices amongst the boulders; and that redfish expanded their distribution to adjacent gravel habitats when local abundance on reefs was high. Multibeam and sidescan sonar surveys in Stellwagen Basin (primarily a cohesive mud seafloor) have shown that discrete small areas of the basin floor are composed of mud draped gravel and partially buried boulders. Linear video transects using remotely operated vehicles and a video/photographic equipped grab sampler across five of these sites in 1997 showed that exposed boulders do not have crevices along their lower margins and are surrounded by dense patches of cerianthid anemones, Cerianthus borealis. These anemone patches are not present on the surrounding mud seafloor. Video image data showed that late juvenile redfish (11–20cm TL) occurred on boulder reefs as well as in the dense cerianthid patches but not on unstructured mud habitat (without cerianthid anemones). Comparisons of boulder reef and cerianthid habitats in 1998 showed that early demersal phase (0-year) redfish (0–10cm TL) occurred only on reefs but late juveniles occurred both on the reefs and in dense cerianthid habitats. Adult size classes (>20cm TL) also occurred in dense cerianthid habitats. Two explanations for these distributions can be advanced. The simplest is that redfish use both boulder and cerianthid habitats on an encounter basis, regardless of habitat saturation or predation pressure. Alternatively, boulder reefs serve as recruitment habitats and cerianthid habitats serve as a conduit for redfish moving away from saturated boulder reef sites, essentially serving as elements of a 'redfish pump'.  相似文献

The amylase activity of the digestive tract of three carnivorous fish species (Sparus aurata, Scophthalmus maximus and Sebastes mentella) has been studied. The activity of seabream and turbot showed its maximum at neutral pH (7.0–7.5); meanwhile, the activity of redfish had an optimum pH at 4.5-5.0. The t° function ranged between 35 and 45°C for the three species. The Arrhenius plots of the intestinal activities of seabream and turbot showed breakpoints at temperatures close to those of their physiological activities. High saline concentrations inhibited the activity of seabream and turbot and activated the activity of redfish. Seabream activity was absolutely dependent on calcium ions. On the contrary, redfish activity was only detected in the absence of this metal. Studies carried out by using several effectors suggested that the activities found in these three species are different. Considering our results from a point of view of the environmental conditions of these species, it might be concluded that enzymatic digestion of dietary carbohydrates proceeds at very low rate. Experimental fishing with long-lines and gillnets was conducted on the continental shelf off southwestern Norway between 150 and 350 m depth. Abundance and distribution of redfish (Sebastes marinus L., 1758), ling (Molva molva L., 1758), and tusk (Brosme brosme Ascanius, 1772) were quantified in Lophelia pertusa (L., 1758) coral reefs and in non-coral habitats. The largest catches of redfish were made with long-line fleets set in coral reef habitats. Ling and tusk were also most numerous in coral habitats, although not statistically significant. Fish caught in coral habitats tended to be larger in size than in non-coral habitats. The diet of redfish, tusk and ling included the same prey groups in all habitats, but they differed at the species level. Lophelia-reefs may provide a profitable feeding place for tusk. For the planktivorous Sebastes, on the other hand, their affinity to the reefs seems primarily to be related to the physical structure offered by the reefs.  相似文献

The annual production of redfish Sebastes mentella of the Norway-Barents Sea population is estimated. The main contribution to the formation of production is made by specimens of the 10–15 year age and in the period of high abundance of recruitment the main contribution is by immature specimens of the 1–8 year age. The generative production of redfish is, on average, by four times lower than the somatic production. The ratio between generative and somatic production is estimated in relation to the population structure. The value of P/B coefficient is in reverse relationship with the individual age and weight. As the part of the junior age groups in the population decreases P/B coefficient increases, and with the increase of the individual average weight in the population it decreases. The relationship between the specific rate of weight growth of redfish and the value of P/B coefficient is shown. The average value of P/B coefficient for the Norway-Barents Sea population of redfish is 0.3.  相似文献

Growth, survival and condition of redfish larvae Sebastes spp., reared in the laboratory (0, 500 1500 and 4500 prey l-1) were highest in the 1500 prey l-1 treatment. Significantly lower larval growth and survival in the 4500 prey l-1 treatment corresponded with lower prey bite: orient ratios in later weeks, suggesting that larvae were unable to forage efficiently at high prey densities. While these prey densities are higher than those reported in the field, naturally co-occurring Atlantic cod Gadus morhua larvae require higher prey densities when reared under similar conditions in the laboratory. These data suggest that prey availability may not be as limiting to redfish as for other commercially important marine species.  相似文献

为了确保黑鲷(Acanthopagrus schlegeli)和美国红鱼(Sciaenops ocellatus)在开放海域的养殖产量和鱼类养殖福利,在20℃下,对体长差异性不显著(P>0.05)的两种鱼进行续航游泳能力测试。首先,确定不同流速下的耐力游泳时间,然后选择耐力游泳时间为150min时的速度进行续航游泳实验。其中黑鲷和美国红鱼分别被迫以3.15和4.32 BL/s的恒定游泳速度,进行0、30min、60min、90min、120min和150min的测试,解剖鱼获得肌肉、血液和肝脏,测定样品在6个时间点的代谢物浓度,每个时间点保证3组有效数据。对0和150min的实验组对比,结果显示,两种鱼肝糖原、背肌乳酸和血糖浓度差异显著(P<0.05),肌肉糖原浓度差异不显著(P>0.05)。双变量相关分析显示,随着疲劳程度增加,肝糖原浓度下降,背肌乳酸和血糖上升。灰度关联分析和主成分分析显示,血糖和肝糖原浓度是影响疲劳的主要因素,但黑鲷相比美国红鱼,其浓度变化范围更大。综上:(1)美国红鱼比黑鲷拥有更强的游泳能力,而且黑鲷和美国红鱼不适合养殖在流速超过3.15和4....  相似文献

Phosphodiesterases from blood cells and serum can be subdivided in several groups according to substrate specificity, optimum pH and effects of inhibitors: 1) Acidic phosphodiesterase activities were not inhibited by EDTA, represented the whole p3'T hydrolysing activity, but only a part of the activity hydrolysing the other substrates (p5'T was not hydrolysed at acidic pH). This acid phosphodiesterase activity was high in white blood cells and platelets but very low in serum. 2) Neutral phosphodiesterase activity was prevalent in leucocytes when BpP and BMP were used as substrates. 3) Alkaline phosphodiesterase activity was characterized by substrate specificity at optimum pH and distribution in cells and serum: in serum there are phosphodiesterases hydrolysing all checked substrates (p3'T excepted) at optimum pH 9.0, whereas in blood cells alkaline phosphodiesterase activities are very low for all substrates (excepted for p Phi Pn and p5'T). In each cell and serum we have determined, for all phosphodiesterase activities, the linearity of activity of versus time and versus protein concentration, the effect of substrate and effector concentration and the heat stability.  相似文献

As part of a more extensive study on the inter- and intraspecific genetic variation of redfish, genus Sebastes , a total sample of 593 individuals of the species Sebastes viviparus were collected from several locations in Norwegian waters and off the south-west coast of Iceland. Haemoglobin and five polymorphic enzymes were analysed. A new haemoglobin polymorphism was observed, and unique alleles were found in Icelandic and Norwegian samples. The results of the enzyme analyses were largely consistent with previous results, but interpopulation variation was observed in the frequencies of IDHP * and Hb * alleles. S. viviparus displayed higher similarity with S. fasciatus from the West Atlantic than with the other Sebastes species.  相似文献

On the basis of the results of complex interdisciplinary investigations of the population composition and structure of the beaked redfish Sebastes mentella of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, its three populations are discerned relatively isolated from each other by the system of permanent marine currents—North Atlantic, Flemish-Cape, and Norway-Barents Sea. The population structure of the species in the southern part of its area corresponds to the model of a local stock. Interaction of the North Atlantic and the Norway-Barents Sea populations well correspond to the model of fluctuating stocks. Redfish aggregations in different biotopes (mesobenthal and mesopelagial) are intrapopulational epigenetic groups. In the period of warm and anomalously warm years, a part of mature specimens from the pelagial of the North Irminger Sea make an irreversible migration to the southern part of the Norwegian Sea and form there mixed aggregations of fish from the North Atlantic and Norway-Barents Sea populations. With consideration of the effect of climatic–oceanological processes, a principally new scheme is elaborated describing the process of seasonal migrations of redfish in the mesobenthal and mesopelagial. The previous views on direction of return migrations of redfish of the Norway-Barents Sea population are reconsidered. Juveniles from the western part of the Barents Sea and Spitsbergen not only supplement the demersal aggregations but also migrate to the pelagial of the Norwegian Sea.  相似文献

Special traits of ecology, zoogeography, formation of fauna of parasites, and occurrence of external lesions are investigated in redfish Sebastes mentella from the Norwegian Sea and the adjacent area of the Barents Sea. A considerable weakening of connection with bottom biocenoses in redfish in the pelagial of the Norwegian Sea indicates that it lives here for most of its annual life cycle. In redfish from south of the open part of the Norwegian Sea, there are noticeable differences in the fauna of parasites and in occurrence of external lesions from those in the fish from the north and east of this sea while traits characteristic of redfish from the Irminger Sea are present.  相似文献

Thalidomide ([+]-alpha-phthalimidoglutarimide), a psychoactive drug that readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic, and immunosuppressive properties through a mechanism that is not fully established. Due to the central role of NF-kappaB in these responses, we postulated that thalidomide mediates its effects through suppression of NF-kappaB activation. We investigated the effects of thalidomide on NF-kappaB activation induced by various inflammatory agents in Jurkat cells. The treatment of these cells with thalidomide suppressed TNF-induced NF-kappaB activation, with optimum effect occurring at 50 microg/ml thalidomide. These effects were not restricted to T cells, as other hematopoietic and epithelial cell types were also inhibited. Thalidomide suppressed H(2)O(2)-induced NF-kappaB activation but had no effect on NF-kappaB activation induced by PMA, LPS, okadaic acid, or ceramide, suggesting selectivity in suppression of NF-kappaB. The suppression of TNF-induced NF-kappaB activation by thalidomide correlated with partial inhibition of TNF-induced degradation of an inhibitory subunit of NF-kappaB (IkappaBalpha), abrogation of IkappaBalpha kinase activation, and inhibition of NF-kappaB-dependent reporter gene expression. Thalidomide abolished the NF-kappaB-dependent reporter gene expression activated by overexpression of TNFR1, TNFR-associated factor-2, and NF-kappaB-inducing kinase, but not that activated by the p65 subunit of NF-kappaB. Overall, our results clearly demonstrate that thalidomide suppresses NF-kappaB activation specifically induced by TNF and H(2)O(2) and that this may contribute to its role in suppression of proliferation, inflammation, angiogenesis, and the immune system.  相似文献

Redfish Sebastes mentella samples were collected in 2004 and 2005 during commercial cruises to the Irminger Sea on board the Polish vessel M/T ‘Wiesbaden’. Ichthyological studies included length and weight measurements, sex, gonad maturity stages and age determinations. Meristic and morphometric measurements were performed on digital images of the redfish. Comparison of the pelagic redfish from the northeastern (depths deeper than 500 m) and southwestern (depths shallower than 500 m) fishing grounds of the Irminger Sea indicates a number of differences including spatial and vertical distribution, ambient temperature, length and age composition. Moreover, 12 morphometric and 4 meristic characters differed significantly between fish samples from these two areas. Results of Cluster Analysis showed the clear grouping of samples into that of the ‘oceanic’ component (depth 300–450 m) and the ‘deep sea’ component (depth 550–800 m). These results were confirmed by Principal Component Analysis, which revealed the separation of samples into two catch depth groups. The share of fish allocated by Discriminant Analysis into the pelagic ‘deep sea’ component in the northeastern area was nearly 92%, while the ‘oceanic’ component was dominant in the southwestern area and comprised more than 88% of the fish. Cluster and Principal Component analyses suggest that the ‘oceanic’ component is a more homogeneous group than the ‘deep sea’ component. Anaerobic bacteria tentatively identified as species of Catenabacterium were recovered from brain, liver, kidney and blood of fish involved in a massive epizootic of grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) and redfish (Sciaenops ocellata). Pathogenicity was demonstrated for grey mullet (M. cephalus) and sea catfish (Arius felis) but not for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) or white mice. Diseased fish were disoriented, weak and swimming at the surface of the water. Thioglycolate and salt bovine blood agar containing 40 microg/ml gentamicin were useful as selective culture media.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of redfish Sebastes mentella in the pelagic zone of the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean (the Irminger Sea and the Labrador Sea) is investigated. Analysis of the data on size-age composition, sex ratio, ratio of mature and immature specimens, rate of maturation, composition of the parasite fauna, infestation level, infestation with the copepod Sphyrion lumpi, and occurrence of pigment formations on the body of redfish from the investigated areas indicate the absence of stable isolated aggregations of this species in the oceanic pelagial of the North Atlantic. Pelagic aggregations are formed of rapidly maturating specimens migrated from the slopes of Greenland. The spatial variation of the size-age composition of redfish depends on the life cycle and regional hydrological conditions.  相似文献

The sensitivities of apoptosis induced by E1A, c-Myc, Bax, and Nip3 to wild-type (wt) and mutated p53 and Id proteins were analyzed by transient transfection followed by flow cytometry with p53 null mouse cerebellum cell lines W7 and M13 that express wt and mutated p53 in response to dexamethasone, respectively. Apoptosis induced by c-Myc was stimulated weakly by wt p53, strongly by Ids, but suppressed completely by mutated p53 irrespective of coexpression with Ids, while apoptosis induced by E1A was suppressed by mutated p53 but stimulated when coexpressed with Ids. Apoptosis induced by Bax was little affected by wt and mutated p53, but inhibited by Ids, while apoptosis induced by Nip3 was inhibited by both wt and mutated p53 and inhibition was stimulated by Ids. Caspase-1 was activated only by Bax significantly when coexpressed with mutated p53 but not with wt p53. These results indicate that the apoptotic processes elicited by these inducers are different and differently affected by wt and mutated p53 and by Ids.  相似文献

Food type or quality can influence assimilation efficiency (AE). AE (digestibility of dry matter) of two captive adult ringed seals (Phoca hispida; one male, one female) was estimated for five prey types. In trials, each of >8 days duration, the seals were fed redfish (Sebastes spp.), capelin (Mallotus villosus), Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida), Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) and a mixture of herring and shrimp (Pandalus borealis). Prey were marked so that faecal samples could be matched to individual seals, and AE was estimated by the relative concentration of Mn2+ in food and faeces. AE was high but varied among the prey species (redfish 83%; capelin 87%; Arctic cod 88%; herring 94%; herring/Pandalus mixture 92%). There was a weak, positive relationship between AE and prey lipid content or energy density, but a negative relationship with inorganic content. AE was lower than expected for cape lin with high fat content. AE was not correlated with meal mass, number of fish in a meal, or seal mass. AE did not differ between the two seals. The regulation of Mac-1, LFA-1, and p150,95 expression during leukocyte differentiation was examined. LFA-1 was present on almost all cell types studied. Both Mac-1 and p150,95 were present on the more mature cells of the myelomonocytic series, but only p150,95 was detected on some B cell lines and cloned cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) stimulation of B chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells dramatically increased p150,95 expression. The resultant Mac-1, LFA-1, p150,95 phenotype resembled hairy cell leukemia, a B cell plasmacytoid leukemia. The promonocytic cell line U937 and the promyeloblastic cell line HL-60 expressed only LFA-1. Monocytic differentiation of U937 cells was stimulated by PMA, and induced the concomitant expression of Mac-1 and p150,95, with more p150,95 induced than Mac-1. Granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) stimulation of U937 cells gave similar results. PMA-stimulated monocytic differentiation of the HL-60 cell line also induced expression of both Mac-1 and p150,95. The number of p150,95 molecules on PMA-stimulated U937 and HL-60 cells were 5 X 10(5) and 3 X 10(5), respectively. Retinoic acid stimulated myeloid differentiation of HL-60 cells and induced expression of both Mac-1 and p150,95. These cells acquired a Mac-1, LFA-1, p150,95 profile that resembled that of granulocytes, with more Mac-1 than p150,95 induced. GM-CSF stimulation of HL-60 cells induced a similar Mac-1 and p150,95 phenotype. The contributions of Mac-1, LFA-1, and p150,95 to aggregation of PMA-differentiated U937 cells were assessed. Monoclonal antibodies to the beta subunit and the LFA-1 alpha subunit, but not those to p150,95 or Mac-1 alpha subunit, inhibited this homotypic adherence.  相似文献
