Oppositely sexed pairs of gorillas were tested behaviorally during the menstrual cycle to determine the relationship between hormone concentrations of the female and the frequency of sexual activity by the pair. Five females were tested individually during two cycles with each of two males, but serum samples for hormone assay were obtained from each female only during the first cycle of testing. There was no clear relationship between hormones and behavior for the single cycle in which the serum samples were obtained, with the exception that no copulations occurred after the early luteal phase, when progesterone was greater than 5 ng/ml. Normalized behavioral data from all four test cycles for all pairs suggested that female-solicited copulations were restricted primarily to the periovulatory period. Male sexual initiative (by one of the males) accounted for most copulations temporally dissociated from the periovulatory period. Normalized hormone data for all of the females suggested that (1) attractivity was associated with estradiol concentrations during the follicular phase, (2) proceptivity with estradiol and testosterone at midcycle, whereas (3) receptivity was not associated with hormone patterns or cycle phase. The data suggest that hormones are one of several variables that contribute to the regulation of sexual behavior in gorillas.  相似文献

The reproductive status of female gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) was estimated by measuring the sex steroid hormones in fecal samples instead of in blood samples. Fecal samples from female gorillas were used to examine the reliability of this non-invasive assay system, which included the extraction method for estradiol-17β (E2) and progesterone (P) from fecal samples. Fecal samples from three female gorillas were collected daily for about 55 days, and fecal E2 and P were assayed to clarify the fluctuation patterns of these steroids in the feces. Fecal sampling from one female was repeated for another 50-day period (starting 75 days after the end of the first observation period) and assayed to confirm if the menstrual cycle of this subject was ovulatory. Although fecal E2 concentration measurements were quantitative by using this assay system, fecal P concentration measurements were semi-quantitative. Relative amounts of fecal P in fecal samples were estimated by using the values of B/B0 (bound/total binding in the radioimmunoassay system). Two of the four fluctuation patterns of fecal hormones observed throughout the menstrual cycle for the three female gorillas were typical for normal ovulatory cycles. In the subject observed for two periods, one pattern was typical and the other atypical. The results show that this non-invasive method is simple and practical for monitoring the reproductive status of great apes as well as Old World monkeys.  相似文献

The role of reproductive hormones in mediating sexual desire in healthy women is still unclear. Elucidation was sought in this study by comparing the hormonal milieu of two groups of subjects with markedly different levels of sexual desire. Seventeen women ages 27-39 who met DSM III-R criteria for severe, persistent, and generalized loss of desire (hypoactive sexual desire disorder, HSD), but had no other current psychological or medical problem, were compared to 13 healthy, sexually active women. All subjects and spouses were interviewed extensively to determine the women's sexual desire and responsiveness. Blood samples were drawn every 3 to 4 days for one menstrual cycle and were analyzed by RIA for testosterone, SHBG, estradiol, progesterone, prolactin, and luteinizing hormone. Results indicated that the HSD women's gonadal hormones fluctuated normally over the menstrual cycle, were within normal limits for each cycle phase, and were never significantly different from those of controls. Neither testosterone, non-SHBG bound testosterone, nor prolactin differentiated between the HSD women with the most and least severe HSD parameters (e.g., frequency of fantasy, masturbation, or female-initiated coitus), nor between women with lifelong and acquired HSD. The present findings did not provide evidence that reproductive hormones are important determinants of individual differences in the sexual desire of these eugonadal women.  相似文献

We investigated the relationship between the menstrual cycle and hormone levels in cynomolgus monkeys, and developed a sulpiride-induced hyperprolactinemic anovulation model. On this study, we demonstrated the usefulness of the commercial human prolactin immunoradiometric assay kit for the measurement of cynomolgus monkey serum samples. In the normal menstrual cycle of the cynomolgus monkey, serum prolactin concentrations were not significantly different between luteal and follicular phases. However, the serum prolactin concentration tended to elevate at the ovulation stage. And serum progesterone began to increase after an estradiol surge, and then declined before the ensuing preovulatory rise in estradiol. During the luteal phase, the serum concentration of progesterone was elevated. Moreover, we aimed to develop an anovulation model, using sulpiride-induced hyperprolactinemia in the cynomolgus monkey. The serum prolactin level gradually increased during the twice-daily administration of sulpiride, and the drug produced as big a response at 5 mg/kg. In this study, the length of the menstrual cycle was approximately 29 days in normal cynomolgus monkeys. When treatment with sulpiride had been continued for more than one month, serum progesterone and estradiol levels fell to within the range seen in the follicular phase of the normal cycle, and the absence of ovulation was recognized by laparoscopy. Moreover, in this period we found that amenorrhea or anovulatory menstruation in the experimental animals. We could produce an anovulatory model induced by sulpiride repeatedly administered over a long time period. Our findings suggest that the cynomolgus monkey is useful as a endocrinological model that uses prolactin as a parameter and as an anovulatory model; thus, it could be a useful model for the hyperprolactinemic amenorrhea and/or anovulation seen in humans.  相似文献

Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived hormone involved in the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Its concentrations are decreased in patients with obesity, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis and are higher in females than in males. Gender differences of adiponectin levels raise the possibility that sex hormones directly regulate its serum concentrations, which may in turn influence insulin sensitivity in different phases of the menstrual cycle. To test this hypothesis we measured serum adiponectin, estradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone concentrations daily throughout the menstrual cycle in six healthy women. Mean adiponectin levels strongly positively correlated with serum cortisol concentrations [R=0.94286; p=0.0048 (Spearman correlation test)], but were not significantly related to other anthropometric, biochemical and hormonal characteristics of the subjects (BMI, blood glucose, insulin, testosterone, prolactin, cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides concentrations, or atherogenic index). Furthermore, no significant changes of serum adiponectin levels were found throughout the menstrual cycle. We conclude that changes in sex hormones during the menstrual cycle do not affect total circulating adiponectin levels in healthy women. Therefore, the differences in insulin sensitivity in various phases of the menstrual cycle are not due to changes of circulating adiponectin levels.  相似文献

Recent research has documented a variety of ovulatory cues in humans, and in many nonhuman species, the vocal channel provides cues of reproductive state. We collected two sets of vocal samples from 69 normally ovulating women: one set during the follicular (high-fertility) phase of the cycle and one set during the luteal (low-fertility) phase, with ovulation confirmed by luteinizing hormone tests. In these samples we measured fundamental frequency (pitch), formant dispersion, jitter, shimmer, harmonics-to-noise ratio and speech rate. When speaking a simple introductory sentence, women's pitch increased during high- as compared with low-fertility, and this difference was the greatest for women whose voices were recorded on the two highest fertility days within the fertile window (the 2 days just before ovulation). This pattern did not occur when the same women produced vowels. The high- versus low-fertility difference in pitch was associated with the approach of ovulation and not menstrual onset, thus representing, to our knowledge, the first research to show a specific cyclic fertility cue in the human voice. We interpret this finding as evidence of a fertility-related enhancement of femininity consistent with other research documenting attractiveness-related changes associated with ovulation.  相似文献

Recent authors have reported a relationship between women''s fertility status, as indexed by menstrual cycle phase, and conservatism in moral, social and political values. We conducted a survey to test for the existence of a relationship between menstrual cycle day and conservatism.2213 women reporting regular menstrual cycles provided data about their political views. Of these women, 2208 provided information about their cycle date, 1260 provided additional evidence of reliability in self-reported cycle date, and of these, 750 also indicated an absence of hormonal disruptors such as recent hormonal contraception use, breastfeeding or pregnancy. Cycle day was used to estimate day-specific fertility rate (probability of conception); political conservatism was measured via direct self-report and via responses to the "Moral Foundations” questionnaire. We also recorded relationship status, which has been reported to interact with menstrual cycle phase in determining political preferences.We found no evidence of a relationship between estimated cyclical fertility changes and conservatism, and no evidence of an interaction between relationship status and cyclical fertility in determining political attitudes. Our findings were robust to multiple inclusion/exclusion criteria and to different methods of estimating fertility and measuring conservatism. In summary, the relationship between cycle-linked reproductive parameters and conservatism may be weaker or less reliable than previously thought.  相似文献

Understanding female reproductive characteristics is important for assessing fertility, interpreting female behavior, and designing appropriate conservation and captive management plans. In primate species lacking morphological signs of receptivity, such as most colobines, determination of reproductive parameters depends on the analysis of reproductive hormones. Here, we use fecal hormone analysis to characterize cycle patterns (N=6 females) and gestation length (N=7 females) in a group of wild Phayre's leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus) in Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand. We found that both fecal estrogen (fE) and progestin (fP) levels showed clear biological patterns indicative of ovulation and conception. However, because fP patterns were inadequate in determining the end of the luteal phase, we used fE rather than fP patterns to delineate menstrual cycle parameters. We found a mean cycle length of 28.4 days (N=10), with follicular and luteal phases of 15.4 (N=10) and 12.5 days (N=14), respectively. On average, females underwent 3.57 (N=7) cycles until conception. Average gestation length was 205.3 days (N=7), with fE levels increasing over the course of pregnancy. Overall, the reproductive characteristics found for Phayre's leaf monkeys were consistent with results for other colobine species, suggesting that fecal hormone monitoring, particularly for fE metabolites, can provide useful reproductive information for this species. The population of western lowland gorillas in North American zoos is aging and, as is the case with the aging human population, may have unique physical and social needs. We have documented previously that 25% of aging females (5/22) ceased to show reproductive cycles entirely, and could be defined as menopausal. Approximately 32% of females showed somewhat irregular cycling patterns. We review our hormonal and behavioral findings on reproductive aging in gorillas; describe the range of cycling patterns that we see and how we interpret these; and discuss the implications of these findings for captive management and husbandry of aging gorillas. We monitored fecal hormone metabolites (progestogens) in 30 gorillas and collected simultaneous behavioral data to evaluate the relationship between cyclicity and sexual behavior. We identified and described several discrete patterns of irregular cycling. These included extreme variability of cycle length, cyclic patterns with unusually low progestogen peak concentrations that possibly may not support luteal activity, and large variability in maximum progestogen peak height among cycles. All of these changes are consistent with age‐related hormonal changes observed in humans and may be signs of changes in fertility as well. Behaviorally, nearly all cycling females exhibited signs of estrus. Affiliative behavior between male silverbacks and estrous females was observed in the control females, but not the geriatric females. These findings suggest that pre‐menopausal females are exhibiting signs of perimenopause. As is the case in humans, such changes in hormone patterns may occur years before the onset of menopause. As enhancements in nutrition, husbandry, and veterinary medicine have led to increased longevity in our zoo populations of apes, it has become imperative that we investigate and better understand associated physiological and behavioral changes in geriatric animals to ensure appropriate management of this increasing demographic sub‐population. Physical activity is an important physiological variable impacting on a number of systems in the body. In rodents and several species of domestic animals, levels of physical activity have been reported to vary across the estrous cycle; however, it is unclear whether such changes in activity occur in women and other primates across the menstrual cycle. To determine whether significant changes in activity occur over the menstrual cycle, we continuously measured physical activity in seven adult female rhesus monkeys by accelerometry over the course of one menstrual cycle. Monkeys were checked daily for menses, and daily blood samples were collected for measurement of reproductive hormones. All monkeys displayed ovulatory menstrual cycles, ranging from 23 to 31 days in length. There was a significant increase in estradiol from the early follicular phase to the day of ovulation (F(1.005,5.023) = 40.060, P = 0.001). However, there was no significant change in physical activity across the menstrual cycle (F(2,12) = 0.225, P = 0.802), with activity levels being similar in the early follicular phase, on the day of the preovulatory rise in estradiol and during the midluteal phase. Moreover, the physical activity of these monkeys was not outside the range of physical activity that we measured in 15 ovariectomized monkeys. We conclude that, in primates, physical activity does not change across the menstrual cycle and is not influenced by physiological changes in circulating estradiol. This finding will allow investigators to record physical activity in female primates without the concern of controlling for the phase of the menstrual cycle.  相似文献

As our closest living relatives, great apes likely experience behavioral and physiological patterns associated with reproductive aging and menopause that are similar to human patterns. We present results from a nationwide zoo-based study on behavioral and hormonal changes in female western gorillas. We evaluated progestogen concentrations via daily fecal sampling in 30 gorillas, 22 of which were geriatric (≥30). We collected concurrent behavioral data 1–3 times weekly on 16 of the females. While control females cycled regularly, ca. 23% of geriatric females are acyclic (menopausal), and another 32% show variable hormonal patterns suggesting perimenopause. Patterns included increased variability in cycle length and peak progestogen values, and frequent insufficient increases in progestogen levels during the luteal phase. Acyclic females have significantly lower overall progestogen concentrations than the self cycling females, though differences are not significant when cycle phase is incorporated. We detected behavioral estrus in 9 of 10 cycling females for which data were available. In all but 1 case, proceptive behavior occurred during the follicular phase, preceding ovulation on average by 6.6 d. Females spent more time in proximity to the silverback male while in behavioral estrus than during other periods. To date, maximum longevity in captive female gorillas is 52 yr, with poor reproductive prognosis beginning from the age of 37. We demonstrate that both perimenopause and menopause characterize aged female gorillas, which may experience a postreproductive lifespan of >25% of their lives. Continued study of aging apes is warranted, and apes may serve as models for age-related reproductive changes in humans.  相似文献

This article presents a mathematical model for hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle which predicts the occurrence of follicle waves in normally cycling women. Several follicles of ovulatory size that develop sequentially during one menstrual cycle are referred to as follicle waves. The model consists of 13 nonlinear, delay differential equations with 51 parameters. Model simulations exhibit a unique stable periodic cycle and this menstrual cycle accurately approximates blood levels of ovarian and pituitary hormones found in the biological literature. Numerical experiments illustrate that the number of follicle waves corresponds to the number of rises in pituitary follicle stimulating hormone. Modifications of the model equations result in simulations which predict the possibility of two ovulations at different times during the same menstrual cycle and, hence, the occurrence of dizygotic twins via a phenomenon referred to as superfecundation. Sensitive parameters are identified and bifurcations in model behaviour with respect to parameter changes are discussed. Studying follicle waves may be helpful for improving female fertility and for understanding some aspects of female reproductive ageing.  相似文献

Marijuana use among women is highly prevalent, but the societal conversation on marijuana rarely focuses on how marijuana affects female reproduction and endocrinology. This article reviews the current scientific literature regarding marijuana use and hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis regulation, ovarian hormone production, the menstrual cycle, and fertility. Evidence suggests that marijuana can reduce female fertility by disrupting hypothalamic release of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), leading to reduced estrogen and progesterone production and anovulatory menstrual cycles. Tolerance to these effects has been shown in rhesus monkeys, but the effects of chronic marijuana use on human female reproduction are largely unknown. Marijuana-induced analgesia, drug reinforcement properties, tolerance, and dependence are influenced by ovarian hormones, with estrogen generally increasing and progesterone decreasing sensitivity to marijuana. Carefully controlled regulation of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is required for successful reproduction, and the exogenous cannabinoids in marijuana may disrupt the delicate balance of the ECS in the female reproductive system.  相似文献

The endocrine effects of cimetidine (Tagamet) during the menstrual cycle were investigated in seven healthy female volunteers. The subjects were studied for six menstrual cycles divided into the pretreatment phase, a phase of therapy with 1.2 g of orally administered cimetidine daily for two cycles, and a post-treatment phase. Cimetidine therapy induced a significant increase in the mean plasma level of follicle-stimulating hormone during the periovulatory period, followed by modest but sustained hyperprolactinemia throughout the luteal phase of each cycle. No significant changes were found in the mean plasma levels of luteinizing hormone and progesterone, and the mean plasma estradiol level was significantly decreased only in the midproliferative phase of each cycle. The mean plasma prolactin levels after a bolus injection of thyrotropin-releasing hormone in the midluteal phase during cimetidine administration did not differ from the mean control levels, which indicates that cimetidine modulates the release of prolactin at the suprapituitary locus. However, the significance of the endocrine changes remains to be established.  相似文献

Laboratory research has implicated several variables which contribute to the regulation of reproductive behaviour of captive gorillas. Females were found to be increasingly attractive to males during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle when estrogen and testosterone concentrations in the female were increasing. Females solicited mating from the males primarily at midcycle, about the time when the concentration of testosterone was maximal. No mating occurred during the mid- to late luteal phase after progesterone concentrations were elevated. Both males and females initiated mating during the midcycle, periovulatory period, but male initiative accounted for most mating that was temporally dissociated from that period. Individual differences between males and among females contributed to the variability in results. Confinement of a male and female in relatively small quarters appears to interact with certain aspects of species-typical behaviour to distort patterns of mating in laboratory tests. Data on behaviour of gorillas in the wild contributed to interpretation of the laboratory results and suggest an enlightened approach to the captive maintenance and breeding of gorillas. An important consideration in promoting captive breeding of gorillas seems to be the provision of options to the female for regulating the frequency and distribution of mating in the cycle.  相似文献

The circamensal changes in the hormonal milieu may influence exercise performance. The generation of maximal voluntary muscle strength, mediated by changes in the steroid hormones, has been the focus of recent research, particularly ergogenic effects of oestrogen. Peak force of the adductor pollicis, normalised for muscle size, has been reported mid-cycle in concert with the rise in oestrogen. The removal of an oestrogen and progesterone environment results in muscle weakness in humans and animals. These hormones decline concomitantly following natural ovarian failure (i.e., the menopause) and surgical extraction of the ovaries (i.e., bilateral oophorectomy). To overcome the problem of controlling for rapid cyclical changes in reproductive hormones across the menstrual cycle, and to isolate the effects of oestrogen when measuring strength, other models have been adopted. Treatment of in vitro fertilisation patients involves, in part, the down-regulation of gonadotropin releasing hormone receptors followed by up-regulation with exogenous pituitary hormones. This presents a very low and very high oestrogenic milieu while progesterone remains rel atively stable. Under these conditions, maximal strength of the first dorsal interosseus muscle has been unchanged. The rapid loss in strength observed post-menopause is preserved, and possibly restored, in women taking hormone replacement therapy. These findings are significant for the preservation of skeletal and muscular health of post-menopausal women. There is increasing evidence to support the role of reproductive hormones in the regulation of muscle strength. Since the link between the hormone milieu during the menstrual cycle and strength changes is weak, other models must be employed. Strength declines rapidly at the menopause, and offsetting muscle weakness in post-menopausal women has implications in reducing the risk of muscloskeletal injury. Female athletes who are prone to amenorrhoea constitute another target group. A hormone-deficient state may not be beneficial to performance, but may compromise muscle function.  相似文献

Circulating levels of steroid and protein hormones were measured in 17 adult male lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla). The population included both fertile and infertile males as identified by previous siring of offspring and presence or absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate obtained by rectal probe electrostimulation. Correlations were sought between levels of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androstenedione, estrone, estradiol, progesterone, 170H-progesterone, dihydroepiandrosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and potential fertility status. The results identify normal circulating levels of these hormones, and indicate that aspermatogenesis and infertility are not necessarily associated with any alteration in levels of gonadal steroids. There is an association of aspermatogenesis with elevation of FSH. Levels of adrenal androgens are more similar to other non-human primates than to the human, which is of interest because in other aspects of reproductive physiology so far investigated the gorilla has proved to resemble the human more closely than it does the other nonhuman primates.  相似文献

Although the clinical and experimental data were in favour of the existence of prolactin in humans like other vertebrates, as a pituitary hormone distinct from growth hormone, its presence remained contested until recent years. The predominant influence of the human hypothalamus on prolactin secretion is inhibitory. Circulating prolactin shows diurnal variations, which are not synchronized with that of TSH or ACTH; the prolactin rhythm is abolished during the last trimester of pregnancy and in patients with prolactin secreting tumors. Estrogens appeared to be less marked stimulators of prolactin secretion in man than in animals, although serum prolactin levels follow a pattern similar to that of endogenous estrogens during the normal menstrual cycle and during pregnancy. After delivery, basal prolactin levels declined progressively. In women under long term medroxyprogesterone acetate treatment, the immunoreactive serum prolactin was within the normal range of cycling women. Prolactin is found in appreciable amounts in amniotic fluid and in the serum of newborn infants. Synthetic LH and FSH releasing hormone did not change circulating prolactin levels in normal humans. A possible luteotrophic action of human prolactin in synergism with LH cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Numerous studies have shown that menstrual cycle related variations in sex hormones influence various cognitive processes. These shifts are considered as the evidence for a hormone-mediated adaptive design underlying human mating motivation. In a series of related studies we have shown that (i) femininity does not vary across the menstrual cycle, whereas masculinity is the most pronounced during the fertile period, (ii) masculinity, but not femininity, predicts shifts in spatial cognition across the menstrual cycle, and (iii) women with different positions on masculinity and femininity dimensions differ in their self-perceived mate value. These results suggest that (i) there might be a hormone mediated psychological mechanism making a woman more assertive and dominant during a short time-window when the conception is likely, (ii) menstrual cycle related shifts in cognitive abilities and mating motivation might have a common hormonal mechanism, and (iii) women's mate value (and indirectly her reproductive success) depends upon both feminine and masculine traits.  相似文献
