Components made from shape memory alloys (SMAs) such as nitinol often fail from stress concentrations and defects such as notches and cracks. It is shown here for the first time that these failures can be predicted using the theory of critical distances (TCDs), a method which has previously been used to study fracture and fatigue in other materials. The TCD uses the stress at a certain distance ahead of the notch to predict the failure of the material due to the stress concentration. The critical distance is believed to be a material property which is related to the microstructure of the material. The TCD is simply applied to a linear model of the material without the need to model the complication of its non-linear behaviour. The non-linear behaviour of the material at fracture is represented in the critical stress. The effect of notches and short cracks on the fracture of SMA NiTi was studied by analysing experimental data from the literature. Using a finite element model with elastic material behaviour, it is shown that the TCD can predict the effect of crack length and notch geometry on the critical stress and stress intensity for fracture, with prediction errors of less than 5%. The value of the critical distance obtained for this material was L?=?90?μm; this may be related to its grain size. The effects of short cracks on stress intensity were studied. It was shown that the same value of the critical distance (L?=?90?μm) could estimate the experimental data for both notches and short cracks.  相似文献

Bone defects create stress concentrations which can cause fracture under impact or cyclic loading. Defects are often repaired by filling them with a bone graft material; this will reduce the stress concentration, but not completely, because these materials have lower stiffness than bone. The fracture risk decreases over time as the graft material is replaced by living bone. Many new bone graft materials are being developed, using tissue engineering and other techniques, but currently there is no rational way to compare these materials and predict their effectiveness in repairing a given defect. This paper describes, for the first time, a theoretical model which can be used to predict failure by brittle fracture or fatigue, initiating at the defect. Preliminary results are presented, concentrating on the prediction of stress fracture during the crucial post-operative period. It is shown that the likelihood of fracture is strongly influenced by the shape of the defect as well as its size, and also by the level of post-operative exercise. The most important finding is that bone graft materials can be successful in preventing fracture even when their mechanical properties are greatly inferior to those of bone. Future uses of this technique include pre-clinical assessment of bone replacement materials and pre-operative planning in orthopaedic surgery.  相似文献

Fracture mechanics of bone with short cracks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Tensile fracture experiments were performed upon specimens of wet mature bovine Haversian bone, with short, controlled notches. Stress concentration factors were found to be significantly less than values predicted using a maximum stress criterion in the theory of elasticity. Results were also modeled with the aid of linear elastic fracture mechanics. Agreement of experiment with theory was better in this case, however deviations were seen for short notches. Two mechanisms were evaluated for the behavior: plasticity near the crack tip, and effects of the Haversian microstructure, modelled by Cosserat elasticity, a generalized continuum theory. Plastic zone effects were found to be insignificant. Cosserat elasticity, by contrast, predicted stress concentration factors which better approximated observed values. To explore strain redistribution processes, further experiments were conducted upon notched specimens in torsion at small strain. They disclosed a strain redistribution effect consistent with Cosserat elasticity. These microelastic effects were attributed to the Haversian architecture of bone. The implications of the results are that bone resists the effect of stress raisers such as fatigue microcracks and surgical sawcuts to a much greater extent than anticipated on the basis of its elastic or elastoplastic properties.  相似文献

This study investigates the biomechanical interaction of different mini-plate fixation types (shapes/sizes and patterns) with segmental advancement levels on the Le Fort I osteotomy using the non-linear finite element (FE) approach. Nine models were generated under a standard 1-piece LeFort I osteotomy for advancement with 3, 6 and 9 mm distances and four mini-plates with three fixation patterns including LL, LI, and II patterns placed on the maxillae models by integrating computed tomography images and computer-aided design system. The axial and oblique occlusal forces were 250 N applied to each premolar/molar and 125 N applied at 30° inclination to the tooth long axis and from palatal to buccal, respectively. The relative micro-movement values between the two maxillary bone segments and maximum mini-plate stress increased obviously with maxilla advancement increment and the increasing trend can be fitted by exponential curve. The corresponding values in II mini-plate fixation presented apparently high values in all simulated cases. The mini-plate stress concentration locations were found at the bending regions to increase high fracture risk. The mini-plate yield strength can be mapped to a critical (limited) advancement for three types of fixations for safe consideration. This study concluded that L-shaped mini-plates with lateral fixation are recommended to provide better stability. The risk for mini-plate fracture and bone relapse increases when maxillary advancement is larger than a critical value of 5 mm in the Le Fort I osteotomy.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate the critical threshold stress causing bone resorption evaluated from strain measurement in vivo, comparing the various finite element models. In this study strains of miniplates used for mandibular fractures were measured once a week until the strains reduced. The maximum bite force for each patient was applied in the incisal, right molar and left molar region. The strains increased and reached a peak level at 2-4 weeks, whereas the bite forces increased during the period of measurements. A 3-D osteosynthesis model using finite element method showed that the compressive stresses of the bone surrounding screws ranged within approximately -40 MPa under the condition generating the same amounts of strains measured in the miniplates. Furthermore, various finite element models simulating mandibular reconstruction using the fibular graft were constructed. The models for reconstruction using single strut fibula showed distinct stress concentration in the cortical bone surrounding screws, and the peak stress levels were 2 to 3 times as strong as that of the fracture model. We conclude that critical threshold for bone resorption should be approximately -50 MPa (3600 micro strain).  相似文献

Fracture mechanics studies have characterized bone's resistance to fracture in terms of critical stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate measured at the onset of a fracture crack. This approach, although useful, provide a limited insight into fracture behavior of bone because, unlike classical brittle materials, bone is a microcracking solid that derives its resistance to fracture during the process of crack propagation from microfracture mechanisms occurring behind the advancing crack front. To address this shortfall, a crack propagation-based approach to measure bone toughness is described here and compared with crack initiation approach. Post hoc analyses of data from previously tested bovine and antler cortical bone compact specimens demonstrates that, in contrast to crack initiation approach, the crack propagation approach successfully identifies the superior toughness properties of red deer's antler cortical bone. Propagation-based slope of crack growth resistance curve is, therefore, a more useful parameter to evaluate cortical bone fracture toughness.  相似文献

In the present study, the fixation system of a femoral medullary nail connection was investigated. In surgical treatment of fractured femurs, the fracture is bridged by a medullary nail that is fixed by interlocking screws in the bone. Bone failure around these screws is the most common complication associated with the treatment of fractures of osteoporotic bone. The present study analyses the stresses present in the region of the implant/bone system. Three-dimensional finite element models were generated, a nonlinear structure analysis performed, and the stresses at material interfaces investigated. The highest concentration of stresses is to be found in the middle of the interlocking screws and the holes drilled in the bone. This is in agreement with the results of experimental investigations.  相似文献

Advances in the fracture mechanics of cortical bone   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1

As cortical bone is a semi-brittle solid, its fracture is dependent not only on the magnitude of the applied stress, but also on the nature of any intrinsic or introduced cracks. Consequently a variety of fracture mechanics techniques have been utilised to evaluate the fracture toughness of cortical bone, including the single edge notched, centre notched cylindrical and compact tension methods, and values have been established for the critical stress intensity factor (Kc) and the critical strain energy release rate (Gc). The Kc and Gc values obtained depend on the orientation of the cortical bone, as well as on bone density, the velocity of crack propagation and specimen geometry. The significance of these fracture mechanics parameters for cortical bone is critically reviewed.  相似文献

The fracture aspects of impact twisted human femurs and tibias have been studied in their wet condition. The main tool used to correlate fracture behaviour with bone structure was the scanning electron microscope. Supplementary data were obtained from macroscopic fracture pattern analyses and stress coat experiments on slowly tested dried bone. The interest of the data reported concerns two major points. Firstly the analysis of the fractographic results leads to the conclusion that the fracture has presumably been initiated by shearing parallel with the torsion axis. The fracture propagates along so called spiral and oblique fracture lines. Secondly, the correlation of the macroscopic fracture pattern with microscopic fracture aspects indicates that the fracture is initiated along the cement lines, which can be considered as the weak matrix in an osteon-cement lining composite. The fracture propagates along the cement lines as well as through osteons and lamellae. Throughout the impact fracture surfaces ductile and brittle fracture aspects were observed, although the brittle fracture mode was predominant during propagation.  相似文献

A fracture criterion for bone tissue is proposed. Bone material is considered to be anisotropic and its properties are described by invoking the concept of directional variation of porosity. The fracture criterion is expressed as a scalar-valued function of the stress tensor and it incorporates an orientation-dependent distribution of compressive/tensile strength. The proposed mathematical framework is applied to a numerical analysis of fracture in the proximal femur due to a fall from standing height. The risk of fracture is assessed in the context of two different porosity distributions, simulating a healthy and an osteoporotic bone.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) is listed as endangered by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Manatee ribs have different microstructure from the compact bone of other mammals. Biomechanical properties of the manatee ribs need to be better understood. Fracture toughness (K(C)) has been shown to be a good index to assess the mechanical performance of bone. Quantitative fractography can be used in concert with fracture mechanics equations to identify fracture initiating defects/cracks and to calculate the fracture toughness of bone materials. METHOD OF APPROACH: Fractography is a standard technique for analyzing fracture behavior of brittle and quasi-brittle materials. Manatee ribs are highly mineralized and fracture in a manner similar to quasi-brittle materials. Therefore, quantitative fractography was applied to determine the fracture toughness of manatee ribs. RESULTS: Average fracture toughness values of small flexure specimens from six different sizes of manatees ranged from 1.3 to 2.6 MPa(m)(12). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show most of the fracture origins were at openings for blood vessels and interlayer spaces. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative fractography and fracture mechanics can be combined to estimate the fracture toughness of the material in manatee rib bone. Fracture toughness of subadult and calf manatees appears to increase as the size of the manatee increases. Average fracture toughness of the manatee rib bone materials is less than the transverse fracture toughness of human and bovine tibia and femur.  相似文献

This study aimed to develop and validate a finite element (FE) model of a human clavicle which can predict the structural response and bone fractures under both axial compression and anterior–posterior three-point bending loads. Quasi-static non-injurious axial compression and three-point bending tests were first conducted on a male clavicle followed by a dynamic three-point bending test to fracture. Then, two types of FE models of the clavicle were developed using bone material properties which were set to vary with the computed tomography image density of the bone. A volumetric solid FE model comprised solely of hexahedral elements was first developed. A solid-shell FE model was then created which modelled the trabecular bone as hexahedral elements and the cortical bone as quadrilateral shell elements. Finally, simulations were carried out using these models to evaluate the influence of variations in cortical thickness, mesh density, bone material properties and modelling approach on the biomechanical responses of the clavicle, compared with experimental data. The FE results indicate that the inclusion of density-based bone material properties can provide a more accurate reproduction of the force–displacement response and bone fracture timing than a model with uniform bone material properties. Inclusion of a variable cortical thickness distribution also slightly improves the ability of the model to predict the experimental response. The methods developed in this study will be useful for creating subject-specific FE models to better understand the biomechanics and injury mechanism of the clavicle.  相似文献

Femoral head apparent density distribution predicted from bone stresses   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
A new theory relating bone morphology to applied stress is used to predict the apparent density distribution in the femoral head and neck. Cancellous bone is modeled as a self-optimizing material and cortical bone as a saturated (maximum possible bone density) response to stress in the bone tissue. Three different approaches are implemented relating bone apparent density to: (1) the von Mises stress, (2) the strain energy density in the mineralized tissue and (3) a defined closed effective stress (spherical stress). An iterative nonlinear three-dimensional finite element model is used to predict the apparent density distribution in the femoral head and neck for each of the three approaches. It is shown that the von Mises stress (an open effective stress) cannot accurately predict bone apparent density. It is shown that strain energy density and the defined closed effective stress can predict apparent density and that they give predictions consistent with the observed density pattern in the femoral head and neck.  相似文献

Failure of bone under monotonic and cyclic loading is related to the bone mineral density, the quality of the bone matrix, and the evolution of microcracks. The theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics has commonly been applied to describe fracture in bone. Evidence is presented that bone failure can be described through a non-linear theory of fracture. Thereby, deterministic size effects are introduced. Concepts of a non-linear theory are applied to discern how the interaction among bone matrix constituents (collagen and mineral), microcrack characteristics, and trabecular architecture can create distinctively differences in the fracture resistance at the bone tissue level. The non-linear model is applied to interpret pre-clinical data concerning the effects of anti-osteoporotic agents on bone properties. The results show that bisphosphonate (BP) treatments that suppress bone remodeling will change trabecular bone in ways such that the size of the failure process zone relative to the trabecular thickness is reduced. Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) that suppress bone remodeling will change trabecular bone in ways such that the size of the failure process zone relative to the trabecular thickness is increased. The consequences of these changes are reflected in bone mechanical response and predictions are consistent with experimental observations in the animal model which show that BP treatment is associated with more brittle fracture and microcracks without altering the average length of the cracks, whereas SERM treatments lead to a more ductile fracture and mainly increase crack length with a smaller increase in microcrack density. The model suggests that BPs may be more effective in cases in which bone mass is very low, whereas SERMS may be more effective when milder osteoporotic symptoms are present.  相似文献

The keratinous horns of bovids are used in intraspecific combat to gain access to females in oestrus. Horn sheath keratin is a composite material consisting of stiff protein fibres and a pliant protein matrix. Unlike antlers, horns are permanent structures which are likely to accumulate damage during fighting. Therefore, horn sheath keratin should be resistant to fracture (tough) and insensitive to surface defects (scratches and cracks) which may weaken horns by acting as stress concentrators.
The effect of water on the toughness and notch-sensitivity of horn sheath keratin was investigated in three-point bending and tensile tests. Several measures of toughness were made on dry (0% water content), fresh (20%) and wet (40%) horn keratin, including total work of fracture, Gurney & Hunt work of fracture, critical strain energy release rate and critical stress intensity factor.
The mean total work of fracture of fresh horn is about 40 kJ/m2 which is relatively much greater than most biological and synthetic materials. Most of the work of fracture is due to plastic yielding of the matrix (50–75%); the rest is due to crack-tip specific fracture mechanisms such as fibre pull-out and Cook Gordon crack-stopping. Dehydration reduces the total work of fracture of horn keratin by preventing the yielding of the matrix.
The strength of fresh and wet horn is insensitive to notches, but dry horn is very notch-sensitive. Therefore, bovids must avoid dehydration of their horns due to the desiccating effect of the environment. The 'horning' behaviour of bovids may be a maintenance activity which ensures that the horn sheath is adequately hydrated to remain tough and notch-insensitive.  相似文献

Phenomenological computational models of tissue regeneration and bone healing have been only partially successful in predicting experimental observations. This may be a result of simplistic modeling of cellular activity. Furthermore, phenomenological models are limited when considering the effects of combined physical and biological interventions. In this study, a new model of cell and tissue differentiation, using a more mechanistic approach, is presented and applied to fracture repair. The model directly couples cellular mechanisms to mechanical stimulation during bone healing and is based on the belief that the cells act as transducers during tissue regeneration. In the model, the cells within the matrix proliferate, differentiate, migrate, and produce extracellular matrix, all at cell-phenotype specific rates, based on the mechanical stimulation they experience. The model is assembled from coupled partial differentiation equations, which are solved using a newly developed finite element formulation. The evolution of four cell types, i.e. mesenchymal stem cells, fibroblasts, chondrocytes and osteoblasts, and the production of extracellular matrices of fibrous tissue, cartilage and bone are calculated. The material properties of the tissues are iteratively updated based on actual amounts of extracellular matrix in material elements at progressive time points. A two-dimensional finite element model of a long bone osteotomy was used to evaluate the model's potential. The additional value of the presented model and the importance of including cell-phenotype specific activities when modeling tissue differentiation and bone healing, were demonstrated by comparing the predictions with phenomenological models. The model's capacity was established by showing that it can correctly predict several aspects of bone healing, including cell and tissue distributions during normal fracture healing. Furthermore, it was able to predict experimentally established alterations due to excessive mechanical stimulation, periosteal stripping and impaired effects of cartilage remodeling.  相似文献

The control of the mechanical stimuli transmitted to the cells is critical for the design of functional scaffolds for tissue engineering. The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamics of the mechanical stimuli transmitted to the cells during tissue differentiation in an irregular morphology scaffold under compressive load and perfusion flow. A calcium phosphate-based glass porous scaffold was used. The solid phase and the fluid flow within the pores were modeled as linear elastic solid material and Newtonian fluid, respectively. In the fluid model, different levels of viscosity were used to simulate tissue differentiation. Compressive strain of 0.5% and fluid flow with constant inlet velocity of 10 μm/s or constant inlet pressure of 3 Pa were applied. Octahedral shear strain and fluid shear stress were used as mechano-regulatory stimuli. For constant inlet velocity, stimuli equivalent to bone were predicted in 80% of pore volume for the case of low tissue viscosity. For the cases of high viscosity, fluctuations between stimuli equivalent to tissue formation and cell death were predicted due to the increase in the fluid shear stress when tissue started to fill pores. When constant pressure was applied, stimuli equivalent to bone were predicted in 62% of pore volume when low tissue viscosity was used and 42% when high tissue viscosity was used. This study predicted critical variations of fluid shear stress when cells differentiated. If these variations are not controlled in vitro, they can impede the formation of new matured tissue.  相似文献

Trabecular bone tissue failure can be considered as consisting of two stages: damage and fracture; however, most failure analyses of 3D high-resolution trabecular bone samples are confined to damage mechanisms only, that is, without fracture. This study aims to develop a computational model of trabecular bone consisting of an explicit representation of complete failure, incorporating damage criteria, fracture criteria, cohesive forces, asymmetry and large deformation capabilities. Following parameter studies on a test specimen, and experimental testing of bone sample to complete failure, the asymmetric critical tissue damage and fracture strains of ovine vertebral trabecular bone were calibrated and validated to be compression damage ?1.16 %, tension damage 0.69 %, compression fracture ?2.91 % and tension fracture 1.98 %. Ultimate strength and post–ultimate strength softening were captured by the computational model, and the failure of individual struts in bending and shear was also predicted. This modelling approach incorporated a cohesive parameter that provided a facility to calibrate ductile–brittle behaviour of bone tissue in this non-linear geometric and non-linear constitutive property analyses tool. Finally, the full accumulation of tissue damage and tissue fracture has been monitored from range of small magnitude (normal daily loading) through to specimen yielding, ultimate strength and post–ultimate strength softening.  相似文献
