Suckling behaviour in the brown long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Thirty-two adult female brown long-eard bats were taken into captivity. Eight individuals gave birth to single young in captivity (known mother-young pairs), 10 were lactating when captured (putative mother-young pairs), and the remaining 14 bats were non-reproductive. Bats were maintained in five groups consisting of females from sigle(n=3) or mixed (n=2) wild roosts. All bats were housed in outdoor, free-flight enclosures and fed mainly on free-flying noctuid moths. Bats were individually were determined daily (n=152) for a single gruup of bats containing four known mother-young pairs and five non-reproductive bats. The probability of a being attached to the nipple declined from 100% of records at 1-5 days of age to 5% of records at 36-40 days of age. Females were always found suckling their own young. Suckling associations were determined using infra-red sensitive video-recordings of bat behaviour within the roost box. For both known (n=8) and putative mother-young pairs (n=10), there were no records of young attached to lactating females other than their own mothers (from the same or different wild roosts).  相似文献

Greenback flounder Rhombosolea tapirina ( c. 2 g) fed to satiation had significantly ( P <0·01) higher feed consumption in the evening than in the morning whereas there was no difference between feeding times for flounder fed restricted rations (1 or 2% body weight per day) because they consumed all of the ration. Differences in growth performance were due to feeding time and ration. Carcass moisture, lipid and energy content were significantly ( P <0·001) different between rations; length gain was significantly affected by feeding time ( P <0·05) and ration ( P <0·001); weight gain showed a significant ( P <0·001) interaction between feeding time and ration. The relationship between feed consumption and specific growth rate showed that the exponential gradient was significantly higher ( P <0·01) for the evening fed fish and indicated feed efficiency for evening fed fish increased as feed consumption increased. Urea excretion increased from 12–20 to 58–63% of total nitrogen excretion at the 1 and 3% rations, respectively. Ammonia and urea excretion were significantly affected by ration ( P <0·001) and feeding time ( P <0·05). Fish fed the 2% ration in the evening had higher growth efficiency and significantly ( P <0·01) lower rates of urea excretion than fish fed 2 or 3% ration in the morning. It is suggested that the higher energetic costs associated with differences in ammonia and urea excretion contributed to differences in growth efficiency.  相似文献

Growth variability and condition of juvenile soles Solea solea and Solea senegalensis , were assessed through RNA : DNA estimates and compared to absolute growth rates. Higher mean cohort RNA : DNA ratios were observed for cohort I at the beginning of estuarine occurrence for both species (4·42 and 4·87, for S. solea and S. senegalensis respectively). Despite different estuarine colonization habits, no significant differences were observed between RNA : DNA monthly variation for both sole species within the same year ( P  > 0·05 for 2003 and 2004). Juvenile S. senegalensis showed significant differences between RNA : DNA ratios obtained for the two nursery areas ( P  < 0·001). The decrease of seasonal growth rates with fish age was similar to seasonal variation of mean RNA : DNA values. Thus the RNA : DNA pattern of juvenile S. solea and S. senegalensis reflected growth and estuarine colonization patterns.  相似文献

Juvenile (12–152 g) shortfinned eels Anguilla australis and longfinned eels A. dieffenbachia caught in New Zealand streams were fed squid mantle Nototodarus spp. 4 days per week in laboratory experiments. A linear multiple regression equation showed the amount of food eaten (0–2·7% w day−1) explained 77·7% of the variation in specific growth rates (–0·60 to +1·07% w day−1) among individual eels, while previous growth rates, water temperature (10·0–20·6°C), and eel weight (12–152 g) explained a further 5·6, 1·4 and 0·8%, respectively. Growth in length ranged from –0·3 to +0·9 mm day−1. Eels which were starved and then given high rations grew substantially faster than expected. Once growth rates were adjusted for differences in ration and other factors, there were no significant differences in growth rates between species or individual fish. Growth of shortfinned eels fed maximum rations of commercial eel food depended on fish size and water temperatures and ceased below 9·0°C. Growth rates in the wild were substantially less than the maximum possible, after seasonal changes in water temperatures were taken into account, indicating that food supplies and not low water temperatures were controlling growth rates in the wild.  相似文献

Variability at seven microsatellite loci was used to survey the genetic population structure of the shortfinned eel Anguilla australis . Samples were collected from six estuaries along the east coast of Australia and from three estuaries around New Zealand. Hierarchical analysis of molecular variance of the five loci with good fit to Hardy–Weinberg genotypic proportions detected highly significant differences among samples ( F ST= 0·016, P < 0·001). The fixation index between countries ( F CT= 0·012, P < 0·001) was more than double the index among samples within countries ( F SC= 0·005, P < 0·05). An unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) tree also supported the separation of Australian and New Zealand populations, as did assignment tests, which correctly assigned 80 and 84% of the individuals to Australia and New Zealand, respectively. Isolation-by-distance appeared among samples overall ( r = 0·807, P < 0·001), but not among samples within countries ( r = 0·027, P > 0·05 in Australia; r = 0·762, P > 0·05 in New Zealand). These findings indicate that populations of A. australis in East Australia and in New Zealand may be reproductively isolated from one another. Genetic differentiation among populations of A. australis was two- to 10-fold higher than that among populations of other temperate eels in the North Atlantic Ocean, suggesting that two group of A. australis may reflect sub-species. Anguilla australis in the two countries have different genetic structures and thus require separate management. Genetic isolation between Australian and New Zealand populations indicates that juveniles recruit independently into these two regions from geographically or temporally isolated spawning areas.  相似文献

A laboratory calibration experiment was conducted to determine the relationship between nucleic acid-based variables and growth rate in young-of-the-year winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus . Three temperatures and three feeding levels were used to produce a variety of growth rates. Nucleic acid analyses were conducted on white muscle tissue using an ultraviolet absorption assay. RNA concentration (μg mg−1 wet tissue mass) and the ratio of RNA:DNA ( R RD) were positively correlated with a mass-based instantaneous growth coefficient ( G M) ( r = 0·42 and 0·72, respectively). Fifty-one per cent of the variability in growth rate was explained by the simple linear regression G M=−0·02615 + 0·00848 R RD ( P < 0·001). This model can be used to estimate recent growth rates for early juvenile winter flounder (27–52 mm standard length) at temperatures ranging from 11 to 24° C.  相似文献

Territorial three-spined sticklebacks moved 5·3 times as far as non-territorial males in 2 min ( P < 0·001) and spent 11·1 times longer in aggression in the pools ( P < 0·001). Territorial males had slightly higher condition factors than non-territorial males. Condition factor was correlated positively with the gonad mass ( P < 0·006), carotenoid concentration ( P < 0·006) and the activity of CS in the axial muscle ( P < 0·05) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in pectoral muscle ( P < 0·003). The male traits best correlated positively with female mate choice were courtship effort ( P < 0·001), coloration ( P < 0·003) and initial condition ( P < 0·025). Courtship behaviour was related to intestine mass ( P < 0·018), axial ( P < 0·028) and pectoral muscle citrate synthase (CS) activity ( P < 0·047); coloration was related to gonad mass ( P < 0·037). These muscle enzymes may be involved in ATP generation for sustained activities or in recuperation between bouts of burst activity. Females that choose to mate with assiduously courting males which bear higher CS levels may be choosing individuals that show honestly their good condition and capacity to accomplish reproductive tasks.  相似文献

A quantitative assay for the demonstration of neutralizer efficacy was developed to monitor contact lens disinfecting solutions. Adequate neutralization of disinfecting agents is essential to the accurate determination of disinfecting activity with time. This method employed the recovery of small numbers of micro-organisms from neutralizing medium containing a disinfectant. A statistical estimation of significance between treatments demonstrated that Dey-Engley medium (DE; Difco) was generally effective when tested as an agar growth medium with several bacterial test organisms. DE medium from another vendor was less effective, underscoring the need for laboratory quality control and monitoring. DE agar (Difco) adequately neutralized all solutions tested at a 1:20 dilution. The solutions included those containing DymedTM (polyaminopropyl biguanide, 0·00005%), chlorhexidine (0·005%), Polyquad® (0·001%), chlorhexidine (0·005%) and thimerosal (BP, 0·001%), thimerosal (BP, 0·002%) and Tris(2-hydroxyethyl) tallow ammonium chloride (0·013%), and a solution preserved with 115 ppm benzalkonium chloride (BAK). A modification of this medium was developed which retained virtually all of the neutralizing efficacy for the solutions tested while allowing the use of automated testing procedures.  相似文献

Introduced Gambusia holbrooki in a natural lagoon of southern Spain consisted of two age groups: 1992 cohort, 7-11 months old and 1993 cohort, <4 months old. In the 1992 cohort, females grew even during the gestation period at about 0·30 mm day-1. In the 1993 cohort, females displayed a high growth rate (0·55 mm day-1) and reached reproductive size in a few weeks, but stopped growing when they matured. All the 1992 cohort reproduced from mid-May to mid-June, but only 50% of the 1993 cohort reproduced, from mid-August to mid-September. Reproducing females were significantly larger in the 1992 cohort (39·8 mm) than in the 1993 one (34·8 mm). The largest 1992 females cohort had reproduced previously; the 1993 cohort had not. The mean dry weight of intra-ovarian embryos decreased to a minimum immediately before birth. These metabolic costs represented 29·8 and 31·4% of the initial weights of the 1992 and 1993 embryos, respectively. Mean dry weight of full-term embryo was significantly higher in the 1992 cohort (0·80 ± 0·129 mg; 95% CL) than in the 1993 one (0·70 ± 0·086 mg; 95% CL). With more females in 1992, cohort fecundity was considerably higher (number of embryos=7151; 63%) than in the 1993 (4193; 37%) cohort. The population completed two generations each year (spring and summer). The spring stock grew slower than the summer one but continued to grow during the gestation period, reaching larger final lengths, with more synchronous reproduction and clearer evidence of a second reproductive event. Each reproductive stock displayed its own life-history characteristics, with significant differences between mean length of reproducing females, growth rate, mean brood size, offspring size, standard fecundity and minimum length at reproduction.  相似文献

The Sr/Ca ratios in otoliths of silver Japanese eels Anguilla japonica , in Pearl River, China, indicated that both sexes did not stay in brackish water and grew in fresh water from the glass eel stage until spawning migration. This did not support the hypothesis that females tended to distribute upstream and males might be restricted to estuaries. The back-calculated total length of males at glass eel stage was not significantly different from that of females, indicating that the hypothesis that small glass eels became males and larger ones became females may not be true. The mean (±S.D.) age and total length of males at migration were 6·4±1·6 years and 48·3±4·5 cm, which were significantly smaller than for females, 8·3±1·6 years and 61·4±4·1 cm. The age of migration was related inversely to growth rate for both sexes. Growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation were K =0·21 cm year°1, L =55·7 cm and t o=-0·55 year for males and K =0·14 cm year−1, L =77·5 cm and t o=-0·60 year for females. The difference in asymptotic length ( L ) between males and females may be because females postpone migration to achieve larger size for maximizing reproductive success.  相似文献

1. Growth, density and δ13C of wood and leaf area were measured in two adjacent stands of 6 year-old Eucalyptus globulus growing in the 600–700 mm year–1 rainfall region of south-western Australia. Study sites were identical except for differences in the availability of water owing to physical properties of soil profiles and location of sites within the landscape.
2. Abundance of 13C (expressed as δ13C) in wood of trees growing on the drought-prone site (– 24·8‰±1·4) was greater than in other trees (– 25·8‰±1·2, P <0·001) throughout the 6 years and, with further development, the δ13C signatures of wood may become useful indices of drought-susceptibility in plantations within a few years of establishment. The seasonal pattern of δ13C of wood appeared to reflect seasonal variation in water availability and duration of cambial activity.
3. Basic density of wood of trees growing on the more drought-prone site (496±14·0 kg m–3) was reduced compared to other trees (554±5·3 kg m–3, P <0·001). δ13C of wood across boundaries of growth-rings suggested that drought stopped cambial activity resulting in less production of late wood and less dense wood.
4. The stand growing on the drought-prone site had reduced growth, wood yield and leaf area but identical specific leaf area. Annual growth was correlated with the previous season's rainfall. Together, these results suggested that within the same evaporative climate, drought reduces growth primarily by reducing leaf area and that there is a lag between onset of drought and reduced productivity.  相似文献

Prior to reproductive maturity male and female worm pipefish Nerophis lumbriciformis are not significantly different in standard length ( L S), eviscerated mass or condition indices. Subsequently, however, mature females achieve significantly ( P  < 0·001) greater values of L S and mass. For egg-bearing males, there was no marked difference in the mass of embryos with increasing development ( P  > 0·1); similarly there was no significant divergence in condition indices calculated for males carrying embryos of increasing development. Post-brooding males, however, had significantly lower values for the hepato-somatic index than either egg-bearing or non-mated male worm pipefish ( P  < 0·001). This study suggests that male worm pipefish invest a significant proportion of their energy budget into the development and maintenance of the brooding patch, to the detriment of increased length or mass.  相似文献

The growth rates of juvenile smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata collected in Florida waters between 1999 and 2006 were investigated using length-frequency and tag-recapture data. Stretched total length ( L ST) data from 144 smalltooth sawfish (690–4960 mm) and 28 recaptures (775–2150 mm) were used for the analyses. Both methods indicated that growth was rapid during the first 2 years after birth. The L ST increased by 650–850 mm in the first year, and by 480–680 mm in the second year. Data for animals >2200 mm were limited, so growth beyond 2 years of age was uncertain. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from L ST frequency data were L = 6000 mm, K = 0·140 year−1 and t 0=−0·863 years. Growth rates over the size range for which tag-recapture data were available were similar to that from L ST frequency data. The growth rates reported are substantially faster than those previously assumed for this species and may have important implications for the recovery of this endangered species. There are conflicting data regarding the growth rates of older P. pectinata which need to be resolved with more data from the wild population before a complete understanding of the conservation implications can be obtained.  相似文献

In trout, fast growth stimulated white muscle fibre hypertrophy ( P 0·001) and hyperplasia ( P <0·01) in outer fibres but not in deep fibres. Growth analysis based on sectioned sagittal otoliths revealed the lesser gurnard Chelidonichthys queketti on the Agulhas Bank to be relatively fast growing and long lived, with ages of up to 7 years being recorded. Total length at age (mm) was described best by the specialized von Bertalanffy growth model as L T=306·1 (1 − e0·53(t+0·18)). First approximations of total, natural and fishing mortality rates were determined at 0·73, 0·38 and 0·35 year−1 respectively. The adult population was male dominated with a sex ratio of 1 female: 1·2 males with the mean size of males and females being similar. The lesser gurnard is an iteroparous species with females maturing by the end of the first year of life (195 mm L T), thereafter spawning throughout the year with reproductive activity peaking over spring and late summer. The lesser gurnard appears to exhibit similar life-history patterns to other triglid species in that it can be classified as a generalist. Generalistic life-history characteristics such as a fast growth rate, early sexual maturity at a relatively large size, a non-seasonal spawning pattern, feeding on a variety of prey organisms and the ability to inhabit various substrata could all contribute to it maintaining a high biomass on the Agulhas Bank.  相似文献

This study aimed to measure protein synthesis using a stable isotope method, investigate protein-nitrogen flux in a flatfish Pleuronectes flesus , and use the data to test the hypothesis that individual differences in growth efficiency were related to individual differences in protein-nitrogen flux mediated through differences in protein synthesis and degradation. Three measurements of protein-nitrogen flux via consumption, protein synthesis and nitrogenous excretion were made for individual flounder during a 212-day period and fractional rates of protein-nitrogen flux were scaled for a 50–g flounder to provide mean values for protein consumption (2·11 ± 0·21% day−1), protein synthesis (2·08±0·23% day−1), protein growth (0·71±0·06% day−1) and protein degradation (1·37±0·24% day−1). Mean rates of nitrogenous excretion were 0·142 mg N g−1 day−1 and 0·047 mg N g−1 day−1 for ammonia and urea, respectively. Individual flounder had different protein growth efficiencies and this was correlated negatively and significantly with mean rates of protein synthesis ( r - 0·70; P <0·05) and degradation ( r - 0·67; P < 0·05) and correlated positively and significantly with the efficiency of retaining synthesized protein ( r +0·63, P <0·05). This supported the proposed hypothesis that flounder which grow more efficiently achieve this through adopting a low protein turnover strategy.  相似文献

Juvenile big bellied seahorse Hippocampus abdominalis were exposed acutely and chronically to elevated ammonia and nitrite {24 h exposure: 0·01, 5·0, 10·1, 14·8 and 19·9 mg l−1 total ammonia-nitrogen [TA-N] and <0·001, 74·4, 99·2 and 123·6 mg l−1 [NO2-N] nitrite-nitrogen and 35 days exposure: 0·11, 0·55, 1·67 and 3·07 mg l−1 TAN and <0·001, 0·92, 4·67 and 9·10 mg NO2-N l−1}. Significant ( P <0·001) increases in oxygen consumption rate and ventilation frequency occurred at 14·8, 19·9 mg l−1 TA-N and 99·2, 123·6 mg l−1 NO2-N for acutely exposed fish. Oxygen consumption rate was significantly ( P <0·05) elevated at 1·67 and 3·07 mg l−1 TA-N in chronically treated fish and ventilation frequency increased significantly ( P <0·05) at 0·55, 1·67, 3·07 mg l−1 TA-N and 4·59, 9·10 mg l−1 NO2-N. There were no significant differences in growth between controls and ammonia exposed fish. Mortalities occurred at 14·8, 19·9 mg l−1 TA-N.  相似文献

Oreochromis aureus exposed during the first 28 days of exogenous feeding to constant 35° C, or fluctuating temperatures (day at 35° C, night at 27° C, and vice versa) showed significantly ( P <0·05) faster growth, least size heterogeneity and better survival rates than siblings under constant 27° C. Constant high temperatures had a strong masculinizing effect (M: F sex ratios of 7·33–19·00: 1·00 v . 0·75–0·82: 1·00 in controls reared at 27° C). Fluctuating temperatures had less masculinizing potential but still produced sex ratios significantly skewed to the detriment of females (M: F sex ratios of 2·33–11·50: 1·00). This suggests that ambient temperature may have represented a sufficient environmental pressure for the selection of thermolabile sex-determinism in this species, and presumably in other Oreochromis spp. The evolutionary advantage of thermosensitivity in Oreochromis spp. is discussed, considering a framework where individual advantages oppose, to some degree, to the population or species interest.  相似文献

The possibility of prey limitations on the growth performance of age‐0 year northern rock sole Lepidopsetta polyxystra was evaluated at three sites along the north‐east coast of Kodiak Island, Alaska, U.S.A., by comparison of observed to potential growth rates. Growth potential was measured in the laboratory across the range of temperatures encountered by this species during the first summer of life. Growth potential ( g L, mm day−1) increased with water temperature (T) between 2 and 13° C, according to: g L = 0·0151 + 0·3673·log10(T). There were significant differences in growth rate between the three field sites such that Holiday Beach fish were 7·1 mm longer than Shakmanof Beach fish by mid‐September, with Pillar Creek Cove fish of intermediate size. Temperature differences between sites accounted for less than half of this variation. The remainder may have been related to differences in prey availability among the sites in association with observed differences in sediment characteristics. In addition to the spatial variability, there was significant monthly variation in growth performance. Realized growth rates between July and August were in excess of 85% of potential. Between August and September, however, realized growth fell to 43–71% of potential indicating a decline in conditions for growth. The spatial variation in growth rates was not density‐dependent as the site with the highest fish densities (Holiday Beach) also supported the highest growth rates. The available data indicates that for this subtidal species, interannual variation in growth may be more important than site variation.  相似文献

We evaluated and quantified prenatal growth of fishers (Martes pennanti) using ultrasonography. Seven females gave birth to 21 kits. The first identifiable embryonic structures were seen 42 d prepartum; these appeared to be unimplanted blastocysts or gestational sacs, which subsequently implanted in the uterine horns. Maternal and fetal heart rates were monitored from first detection to birth. Maternal heart rates did not differ among sampling periods, while fetal hearts rates increased from first detection to birth. Head and body differentiation, visible limbs and skeletal ossification were visible by 30, 23 and 21 d prepartum, respectively. Mean diameter of gestational sacs and crown-rump lengths were linearly related to gestational age (P < 0.001). Biparietal and body diameters were also linearly related to gestational age (P < 0.001) and correctly predicted parturition dates within 1-2 d.  相似文献
