Fundamental knowledge on the morphology, biology, ecology, and economic importance of Eriophyoidea has been exhaustively compiled by Lindquist et al. (Eriophyoid mites—their biology, natural enemies and control; Elsevier, 1996). Since that time, the number of recognized species and the economic importance of the taxon have increased substantially. The aim of this paper is to analyze and briefly review new findings from eriophyoid mites’ literature after Lindquist et al. book, stressing persistent gaps and needs. Much recent attention has been given to sampling and detection, taxonomy and systematics, faunistic surveys, internal morphology, rearing techniques, biological and ecological aspects, biomolecular studies, and virus vectoring. Recommendations are made for integrating research and promoting broader dissemination of data among specialists and non-specialists.  相似文献

Besides their potential for species identification, DNA-based methods are also routinely used for addressing ecological, evolutionary, phylogenetic and genetic questions to study several groups of Acari. However, in contrast to other plant-feeding mites and despite the economical relevance of many species of Eriophyoidea, very few scientists have dared so far to use DNA methods for the study of this group of mites; their very small size certainly has influenced this. In this review we examine the main techniques that have been used to study eriophyoid mites and discuss the results from the literature where DNA methods have provided significant advances to address several essential questions of the eriophyoid biology, e.g., to clarify suspect synonymies, to test hypothesis of cryptic species, to examine the occurrence of biotypes, especially in relation to virus ability or host-plant associations, to understand colonization patterns of invasive species, and for uses as biological control agents against invasive plants. We discuss these questions which might be related to agricultural issues, together with more fundamental aspects as the revision of the phylogeny of the Eriophyoidea. We discuss on the advantages as well as limitations of the most commonly used genetic markers and emphasize prospects and challenges of new molecular approaches. Much is now expected from molecular techniques in many fields of biology and for virtually all taxa. Eriophyoids should not be the exception.  相似文献

The nature of the damage caused by eriophyoid mites and the assessment of yield losses still require detailed studies if appropriate control and risk mitigation strategies are to be planned. The economic importance of eriophyoid mites is increasing worldwide and a lot of species have reached a permanent pest status in certain crops, while others represent a quarantine threat for several countries. Due to their relevant role in Europe and elsewhere, three eriophyoid mites that have been frequently reported in recent research, are here considered as case studies: two of them (the apple rust mite, Aculus schlechtendali, and the grape rust mite, Calepitrimerus vitis) colonise temperate fruits, while one (the tomato russet mite, Aculops lycopersici) affects vegetables. The damage assessment related to the apple rust mite has been evaluated on different apple varieties with implications for pest control. Some factors affecting the spread and economic importance of the grape rust mite have been identified. The complexity and difficulty in controlling the tomato russet mite by chemicals enhances the interest in biological control agents. Considerations on interactions between eriophyoids and host plants (e.g. resistance, varietal susceptibility), on pest management regimes (e.g. impact of fungicides, resistance to acaricides, perspectives on biological control) are presented.  相似文献

Diseases of Mites   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
An overview is given of studies on diseases of mites. Knowledge of diseases of mites is still fragmentary but in recent years more attention has been paid to acaropathogens, often because of the economic importance of many mite species. Most research on mite pathogens concerns studies on fungal pathogens of eriophyoids and spider mites especially. These fungi often play an important role in the regulation of natural mite populations and are sometimes able to decimate populations of phytophagous mites. Studies are being conducted to develop some of these fungi as commercial acaricides.Virus diseases are known in only a few mites, namely, the citrus red mite and the European red mite. In both cases, non-occluded viruses play an important role in the regulation of mite populations in citrus and peach orchards, respectively, but application of these viruses as biological control agents does not seem feasible. A putative iridovirus has been observed in association with Varroa mites in moribund honeybee colonies. The virus is probably also pathogenic for honeybees and may be transmitted to them through this parasitic mite.Few bacteria have been reported as pathogens of the Acari but in recent years research has been concentrated on intracellular organisms such as Wolbachia that may cause distorted sex ratios in offspring and incompatibility between populations. The role of these organisms in natural populations of spider mites is in particular discussed. The effect of Bacillus thuringiensis on mites is also treated in this review, although its mode of action in arthropods is mainly due to the presence of toxins and it is, therefore, not considered to be a pathogen in the true sense of the word.Microsporidia have been observed in several mite species especially in oribatid mites, although other groups of mites may also be affected. In recent years, Microsporidia infections in Phytoseiidae have received considerable attention, as they are often found in mass rearings of beneficial arthropods. They affect the efficacy of these predators as biological control agent of insect and mite pests. Microsporidia do not seem to have potential for biological control of mites.  相似文献

Eriophyoid mites are excellent candidates for ethological research using the approaches of behavioural ecology and sociobiology. These tiny haplodiploid mites are highly specialized plant parasites, producing galls, forming nests, inhabiting refuges or living freely on plants. They reproduce via spermatophores deposited on a substrate and without pairing, which is a fascinating, though still poorly understood, mode of reproduction widespread in some groups of arthropods. Eriophyoid males can be involved in external sperm competition. In some species they also guard pre-emergent females and deposit spermatophores beside them. Although slow-walking, the minute eriophyoid mites can disperse for long distances on air currents or specific animal carriers. After landing on a plant they can distinguish between suitable and unsuitable hosts. Biological observations on a deuterogynous species indicate that parasociality could occur among eriophyoid mites. Many eriophyoids are of economic importance. Knowledge of their behaviour may promote understanding their ecology, may resolve problems in their phylogeny and may help developing methods for their control. In this paper, attention is directed to dispersal modes of eriophyoid mites, their feeding and host acceptance, spermatophore deposition and mating, defence against predators, and social behaviour.  相似文献

Abstract:  Differences in spatial distribution and abundance of bud galls caused by eriophyoid mites (Acari: Eriophyoidea) among Carpinus tschonoskii (Betulaceae) were studied. This mite preferentially induces galls on terminal buds. Four factors influencing gall abundance were examined: host tree size, host tree's reproductive status, altitude and study site. As tree size increased, the number of galls increased to an apparent asymptote. This result suggests that tree size-dependent characteristics such as number of terminal buds, temporal pattern of shoot elongation and reproductive status influence gall abundance.  相似文献

This paper reviews the evolutionary aspects of obligate phytophagy (excluding mycophagy and phycophagy) in the mite suborder Trombidiformes. Phytophagy in the other acariform suborder, Sarcoptiformes, is limited to just a few species, amidst otherwise saprophagous or fungivorous taxa, that attack the living tissues of higher plants. The phylogenetic relationships of lineages that contain taxa of plant-feeding mites are reviewed briefly, to facilitate hypotheses about the number of times that phytophagy has arisen within the Trombidiformes. The relationship between the two most important plant-feeding taxa, the Tetranychoidea and Eriophyoidea, is so distant that their obligate phytophagy represents independent events. Outgroup comparisons allow an estimate of the relative ages when phytophagy arose. This background facilitates analyses of the evolutionary patterns of attributes relevant to phytophagy as a way of life. Styliform modifications of chelate chelicerae for predation or fungivory were fundamental pre-adaptations for effective phytophagy. Dispersal among the major lineages of phytophagous mites seems generally passive, with little evidence of phoretic behaviour. Continued individual mobility seems to be needed during ontogeny and adulthood, such that no scale-like or sac-like instars have arisen. Trends towards physogastric reproduction and ovoviviparity are not evident. Arrhenotokous sex determination predominates among lineages of phytophagous mites. The primary sex ratios are not usually highly female biased. Direct sperm transfer does not seem to have been advantageous or disadvantageous to adaptive radiations of plant-feeding lineages. Adaptive trends towards thelytoky are scattered and do not seem to have played major roles in speciation, diversification or trends towards increasing host specificity in lineages. Alternate asexual and sexual generations and life cycles on different species of hosts, as occur among families of aphid and scale insects, are not known. Among unrelated lineages of trombidiform mites, there appears to have been convergent evolution of attributes, such as those noted above, in response to similar selective pressures for a phytophagous way of life. The patterns of attributes discussed need experimental analysis and detailed documentation to test their accuracy and generality and to understand the selective pressures that have formed them.  相似文献

The twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is an important pest of impatiens, a floricultural crop of increasing economic importance in the United States. The large amount of foliage on individual impatiens plants, the small size of mites, and their ability to quickly build high populations make a reliable sampling method essential when developing a pest management program. In our study, we were particularly interested in using spider mite counts as a basis for releasing biological control agents. The within-plant distribution of mites was established in greenhouse experiments and these data were used to identify the sampling unit. Leaves were divided into three zones according to location on the plant: inner, intermediate, and other. On average, 40, 33, and 27% of the leaves belonged to the inner, intermediate, and other leaf zones, respectively. However, because 60% of the mites consistently were found on the intermediate leaves, intermediate leaves were chosen as the sampling unit. These results lead to the development of a presence-absence sampling method for T. urticae by using Taylor coefficients generic for this pest. The accuracy of this method was verified against an independent data set. By determining numerical or binomial sample sizes for consistently estimating twospotted spider mite populations, growers will now be able to determine the number of predatory mites that should be released to control twospotted spider mites on impatiens.

We have successfully reduced populations of economically damaging Pacific mites by introducing another economically unimportant herbivorous mite to grapevines. Although this technique has proven successful in greenhouse and commercial applications, we had a poor understanding of why it worked. Experiments were conducted in a Zinfandel vineyard to assess the relative importance of different forms of competition between these two species and the importance of the timing of the introduction. The early season release of Willamette mites that occurred as shoots were first elongating reduced populations of Pacific mites, indicating that some form of competition occurred in this experiment. However, introductions of Willamette mites 4 weeks later did not reduce populations of Pacific mites. An early season release is essential for control. Control shoots did not receive additions of Willamette mites and had high population densities of Pacific mites. In contrast to this, Pacific mite populations were reduced on treatments with Willamette mites, regardless of whether the two species overlapped spatially or were separated by a barrier. This indicated that physical interference was not responsible, that induced resistance was involved, and that the effect was systemic throughout the shoot.  相似文献

This work reports the occurrence of mites predominantly predatory, phytophagous and with varied feeding habits on plants of the Atlantic Forest vegetation type of the State of S?o Paulo. The objective was to estimate the possible role of the Atlantic Forest vegetation as reservoir of these groups of mites which are also found on plants of agricultural importance. Samples were taken from 187 plant species belonging to 73 families in three vegetation types of the Atlantic Forest from February of 2001 to October of 2002. A total of 2,887 mites belonging to 163 morpho-species of 16 families were collected. Mite diversity was high, especially of predatory mites; these corresponded to 1,562 specimens of 92 morpho-species. Within this group, Phytoseiidae comprised 71% of the specimens and 62% of the morpho-species. Phytophagous mites comprised 836 specimens of 36 morpho-species. Within this group, Tenuipalpidae comprised the larger proportion of specimens (61%) whereas Tetranychidae corresponded to the larger proportion of morpho-species (64%). Mites with varied feeding habits corresponded to 491 specimens of 36 morpho-species. In this group, the larger proportion of specimens (52%) consisted of Ascidae and the larger proportion of morpho-species (42%) consisted of Tydeinae (family Tydeidae). High abundance and high morpho-species richness of mites of predominantly predatory, phytophagous and variable feeding habits were observed on 17, five and nine plant species, respectively. The results obtained suggest the importance of plants of the studied vegetation as reservoirs of predatory mites.  相似文献

The adaxial (upper) and abaxial (lower) surfaces of a plant leaf provide heterogeneous habitats for small arthropods with different environmental conditions, such as light, humidity, and surface morphology. As for plant mites, some agricultural pest species and their natural enemies have been observed to favor the abaxial leaf surface, which is considered an adaptation to avoid rain or solar ultraviolet radiation. However, whether such a preference for the leaf underside is a common behavioral trait in mites on wild vegetation remains unknown. The authors conducted a 2-year survey on the foliar mite assemblage found on Viburnum erosum var. punctatum, a deciduous shrub on which several mite taxa occur throughout the seasons, and 14 sympatric tree or shrub species in secondary broadleaf-forest sites in Kyoto, west–central Japan. We compared adaxial–abaxial surface distributions of mites among mite taxa, seasons, and morphology of host leaves (presence/absence of hairs and domatia). On V. erosum var. punctatum, seven of 11 distinguished mite taxa were significantly distributed in favor of abaxial leaf surfaces and the trend was seasonally stable, except for Eriophyoidea. Mite assemblages on 15 plant species were significantly biased towards the abaxial leaf surfaces, regardless of surface morphology. Our data suggest that many mite taxa commonly prefer to stay on abaxial leaf surfaces in wild vegetation. Oribatida displayed a relatively neutral distribution, and in Tenuipalpidae, the ratio of eggs collected from the adaxial versus the abaxial side was significantly higher than the ratio of the motile individuals, implying that some mite taxa exploit adaxial leaf surfaces as habitat.  相似文献

Eriophyoids have high potential as adventive mite species (AMS) because their small size make them difficult to detect, and can be easily distributed in world trade. Economic, social and environmental impact from adventive eriophyoid mites has been significant. Considerable attention has been given to adventive insect species while adventive mites have received little attention and little information is available for eriophyoids. This paper summarizes information on adventive eriophyoid mites, their impact, and the history of some important invasions. The status of adventive species of eriophyoids introduced as biological control agents of weeds is presented. A list of eriophyoid mites reported as invasive species worldwide is given. Pathways of concern and biosecurity actions to reduce the risk of eriophyoid mites are discussed. The need to raise public awareness of the risk and importance of these tiny organisms as AMS is emphasized. Scientific and technical challenges to deal with adventive eriophyoids are discussed.  相似文献
