This study quantifies the behavioral response of the widespread mouth brooding African cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae to progressive hypoxia. We exposed four gender/stage classes of P. multicolor (males, brooding females, females that had just released young, and non-brooding females) to progressive hypoxia and recorded the percent time spent using aquatic surface respiration (surface skimming, ASR) and gill ventilation rates. This was done for fish collected from three sites in Uganda (lake, swamp, and river) after long-term acclimation to normoxia. There was no effect of site of origin on response to hypoxia, but ASR thresholds did differ between gender/stage classes. The oxygen level (threshold) at which spent 10, 50, and 90% of their time at the surface using ASR was much higher for brooding females than for males, whereas ASR thresholds did not differ between non-brooding females and males. Similarly, the level at which ASR was initiated was much higher in brooding females than males, but did not differ between males and non-brooders, or between males and females than had just released young. The rate of gill ventilation dropped significantly in males and all stages of females after initiation of ASR, suggesting that surface skimming increases efficiency of oxygen acquisition. These results suggest that mouth brooding in female P. multicolor ASR improves oxygen uptake but imposes a cost in terms of time spent at the water surface, and this may affect maternal predation risk in low-oxygen habitats.  相似文献

In the African cyprinid, Barbus neumayeri, populations from hypoxic waters have larger gills than populations from well-oxygenated streams. Differences in trophic morphology and feeding performance between these populations suggest a reduction in feeding efficiency in large-gilled fish that may reflect spatial constraints of the gills. However, this variation may also reflect interdemic variation in diets. In this study, we describe patterns of variation in diet, gut morphology, and prey availability for populations of B. neumayeri from swamp (low-oxygen) and stream (high-oxygen) sites in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Our results indicate that B. neumayeri are omnivorous, feeding primarily on benthic prey items; however, diets differed among swamp and stream sites for certain prey types. The observed dietary differences do not provide direct support for predictions based on variation in trophic musculature; hard-bodied prey were more common in low-oxygen sites. Prey availability also differed among sites; in particular, insect abundance and richness was generally lower in the swamp sites. Gut length was longer in one of the four populations, but did not conform to expectations based on diet differences. Condition and growth rates did not differ between populations from hypoxic and well-oxygenated sites, despite observed differences in prey availability and diet, suggesting that B. neumayeri may be distributed in a way that equalizes fitness among populations in different habitats.  相似文献

In aquatic vertebrates that acquire oxygen aerially dive duration scales positively with body mass, i.e. larger animals can dive for longer periods, however in bimodally respiring animals the relationship between dive duration and body mass is unclear. In this study we investigated the relationships between body size, aquatic respiration, and dive duration in the bimodally respiring turtle, Elseya albagula. Under normoxic conditions, dive duration was found to be independent of body mass. The dive durations of smaller turtles were equivalent to that of larger individuals despite their relatively smaller oxygen stores and higher mass specific metabolic rates. Smaller turtles were able to increase their dive duration through the use of aquatic respiration. Smaller turtles had a relatively higher cloacal bursae surface area than larger turtles, which allowed them to extract a relatively larger amount of oxygen from the water. By removing the ability to respire aquatically (hypoxic conditions), the dive duration of the smaller turtles significantly decreased restoring the normal positive relationship between body size and dive duration that is seen in other air-breathing vertebrates.  相似文献

In South Africa, modified flow regimes designed to maintain ecosystem functioning at some pre-determined level are recommended for all rivers involved in major water-resource developments. One component of such flow regimes of special interest in the winter-rainfall region of the country is the small pulses of higher flow that occur in the dry season (November–April), here called freshes. Research was carried out in the Olifants River, in the winter-rainfall region of South Africa, on the link between freshes and spawning of an endemic, vulnerable cyprinid, the Clanwilliam yellowfish Barbus capensis. Experimental releases from Clanwilliam Dam on the Olifants River in a previous year showed that a greater than usual spawning success, assessed by larval recruitment levels, was correlated with hypolimnetic freshes released during the species' breeding season (October–January). In the study reported on here, a hypolimnetic fresh of the same size, duration and timing as those linked with successful spawning failed to induce spawning. Differences in the thermal regime of water releases appeared to be responsible. Two warm (19–21 °C), epilimnetic freshes of 15 hours duration were then released, and correlated with fish moving onto the spawn beds and exhibiting pre-spawning behaviour. However, the fish moved downstream away from the spawn beds when cold (16–18 °C) hypolimnetic baseflows were released for 15 hours between the two epilimnetic freshes and continually after the second one. The presence of free embryos and larval B. capensis indicated, from their developmental stages, that spawning had probably occurred before the experimental releases began, when warm (21–23 °C) epilimnetic water was spilling over the dam, and had halted once spillage stopped and hypolimnetic releases began. Indeed, the presence of dead and deformed young suggested that the cold water may have had a detrimental affect on those spawned during the earlier warmer spell. A summary table details the conditions, including the hydraulic characteristics of the spawn beds, believed to induce spawning and support early life stages of B. capensis. It is concluded that freshes released from Clanwilliam Dam at the appropriate time (October–January) should be able to increase spawning success of B. capensis, but only if the water temperature at the spawn site is at or above 19 °C and stable or rising. However, successful spawning will not necessarily lead to high recruitment if water temperatures are not then maintained at appropriate levels for some time for development of the embryos and larvae. This implies that additional epilimnetic releases will be required following critical trigger flows.  相似文献

Hypoxia and the antipredator behaviours of fishes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Hypoxia is a phenomenon occurring in marine coastal areas with increasing frequency. While hypoxia has been documented to affect fish activity and metabolism, recent evidence shows that hypoxia can also have a detrimental effect on various antipredator behaviours. Here, we review such evidence with a focus on the effect of hypoxia on fish escape responses, its modulation by aquatic surface respiration (ASR) and schooling behaviour. The main effect of hypoxia on escape behaviour was found in responsiveness and directionality. Locomotor performance in escapes was expected to be relatively independent of hypoxia, since escape responses are fuelled anaerobically. However, hypoxia decreased locomotor performance in some species (Mugilidae) although only in the absence of ASR in severe hypoxia. ASR allows fish to show higher escape performance than fish staying in the water column where hypoxia occurs. This situation provides a trade-off whereby fish may perform ASR in order to avoid the detrimental effects of hypoxia, although they would be subjected to higher exposure to aerial predation. As a result of this trade-off, fishes appear to minimize surfacing behaviour in the presence of aerial predators and to surface near shelters, where possible. For many fish species, schooling can be an effective antipredator behaviour. Severe hypoxia may lead to the disruption of the school unit. At moderate levels, hypoxia can increase school volume and can change the shuffling behaviour of individuals. By altering school structure and dynamics, hypoxia may affect the well functioning of schooling in terms of synchronization and execution of antipredator manoeuvres. School structure and volume appear to be the results of numerous trade-offs, where school shape may be dictated by the presence of predators, the need for energy saving via hydrodynamic advantages and oxygen level. The effects of hypoxia on aquatic organisms can be taxon specific. While hypoxia may not necessarily increase the vulnerability of fish subject to predation by other fish (since feeding in fish also decreases in hypoxia), predators from other taxa such as birds, jellyfish or aquatic mammals may take advantage of the detrimental effects of hypoxia on fish escape ability. Therefore, the effect of hypoxia on fish antipredator behaviours may have major consequences for the composition of aquatic communities.  相似文献

The present study focuses on the bacteriological profile of both watery ecosystem and fishes from different North and Central West Greek fish-farms ongrowing euryhaline fish species. The natural microflora of the fish and the water of their ongrowing units in selected farms were studied for a period of 20 months. The analyzed samples were mainly sea bream (Sparus aurata) 61.3% and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) 24%. In most of the watery ecosystems coming from the different sampling areas, total and fecal coliforms as well as total and fecal streptococci were abundant in all water samples. Enterococcus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas were present at a level of 3 logs cfu/100 ml. The anaerobic Clostridium perfringens was found in vegetative (21.3%) and spore forms (13.3%). It is of interest to note that pathogens as Pasteurella piscicida and Vibrio anguillarum were isolated only in a small number of samples. Staphylococcus aureus was detected in 4% of the samples, other Staphylococcus sp. in 29.3%, E. coli in 30.7%, Salmonella sp. in 1.3%, Pseudomonas sp. in 13.3%, Clostridia lec(−) in 49.3%, Bacillus sp. in 38.7%, Vibrio sp. in 18.7%, Lactobacillus and Lactococcus sp. in 36% και 29.3% respectively. Vegetative forms of C. perfringens were detected in 22.7%.Although, our results showed no significant correlations between the sea water and fish microflora, more focus on this bipolar interacting system should be necessary in order to avoid any possible disturbance in the balance of the healthy farming ecosystem with the host organisms.  相似文献

Muscle proteins were investigated in two large European barbels, Barbus barbus and B. meridionalis , and in four small tropical barbels native to SE Asia: B. conchonius , B. tetrazona , B. sachsi and B. titteya . Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to analyse myosin heavy and light chains and parvalbumin isotypes from white trunk muscle. Each species could be biochemically identified. The myosin subunit and parvalbumin isotype patterns obtained for the two European barbels were similar. The Asian barbels, on the other hand, not only differed from the European species but displayed a greater diversity within their group. These biochemical results are largely in agreement with morphological and genetic data, but fail to substantiate suggested close relationships between Asian barbel species.  相似文献

The globalization of economies and trade have facilitated the spread of exotic species including the five most important freshwater suspension feeding invaders Dreissena polymorpha, D. bugensis, Corbicula fluminea, C. fluminalis, and Limnoperna fortunei. We suggest that the spread of these exotic species has not been a continuous process, but rather punctuated by periods of rapid long distance spread (jump), during which species greatly expanded their geographic ranges. Each jump has been associated with changes in the tempo of some human activity, such as the construction of shipping canals for trade, building of reservoirs for water storage and power production, political boundary changes or changes in political systems, which affected the position or permeability of national borders, human migration, changes in the mode and volume of international trade, or recent industrial practices and environmental laws. We hypothesize that the rate of spread of exotic species depends on the spatial scale of spread and may be accelerated or slowed by various human activities. In general, aquatic exotic species may quickly spread along connected waterways in a new continent they invade and soon reach their maximum range (continental scale). However, it will take much longer to colonize all isolated regions (regional scale) and longer still to spread to all isolated lakes and river systems (local scale). The difference in the rate of colonization across scales may be several orders of magnitude.  相似文献

A total of 1872 bones from a fish eagle roost at Lake Turkana, Kenya was identified and analysed to provide data on fish eagle prey and diet. The approach of this study complements field observation studies in that it provides a long‐term analysis and quantification of the diet, rather than short qualitative observations. The study found that, at least where fish is relatively abundant, fish eagles are both selective and opportunistic: selective in taking preferred fish in much greater proportions than natural availability, and also in avoiding unwanted fish regardless of abundance, but opportunistic in taking certain other species in proportion to their availability. They also show considerable selection in size and habitat preferences of prey. Non‐fish prey forms a considerable proportion of the diet, and probably represents both opportunistic hunting, possibly when conditions for fishing are poor, and killing of other predators robbing fish eagle nests.
As well as describing and quantifying the fish eagle diet at Lake Turkana, data from this study suggest that further study is needed to quantify the impact of fish eagle predation on Clarias lazera , a rare, but valuable species to the Lake Turkana fishery. The study of bird roost prey remains also provides baseline data for studies of fossil microfaunal accumulations. Scatters of bones under fish eagle roosts are common in eastern Africa, and undoubtedly contribute to many of the fossil bone accumulations recovered. One of us (DM) has noted that the taxonomic and skeletal composition of the Koobi Fora roost bears a great resemblance to some of the clusters she is analysing from Olduvai Gorge. Further similar studies will provide additional data on bird roost accumulations.  相似文献

Synopsis When dissolved oxygen concentration was near saturation in a laboratory experiment, guppies that spent (a) more time at the surface and (b) more time moving had a higher probability of being captured by a predatory cichlid fish. With decreasing oxygen concentration surface time and percent time moving increased, but prey risk decreased. In addition, the qualitative correlates of risk changed; under hypoxic conditions, predation risk was lower for prey which spent more time at the surface and in motion. Thus, dissolved oxygen concentration influences both quantitative and qualitative aspects of risk from water-breathing predators.Author to whom reprint requests should be addressed.  相似文献

A study of well over one thousand specimens provided proof to put the conspecifity of the two supposed species originally described asHelobdella tricarinata andClepsine nilotica beyond all doubt. Evidence is presented which indicates that the striking changes in body-shape and drastic alteration in the appearance of the tuberculation at different stages of reproduction and nutrition combined with individual variation in tuberculation, annulation, and in the arrangement and pigmentation of the eyes were responsible for earlier confusion as to the identity of this species. Since the early accounts were incomplete and contained some important errorsBatracobdelloides tricarinata is redescribed and, for the first time, comprehensively figured.  相似文献

Synopsis Because of the need for surface access for aquatic surface respiration (ASR), fish density increases were demonstrated for the open water of a floodplain lake during severe hypoxia. This indicates an O2-induced diurnal pattern of horizontal migrations between the zone of macrophyte cover and open water. Supplemental experimental investigations seem to suggest that species such as characoids,Colossoma macropomum andSchizodon fasciatum, deviate from this pattern. During long periods of oxygen depletion, they return to the region of macrophyte growth and survive there without displaying the usual kind of ASR. Mortality studies in net cages exposed in natural water bodies confirmed that only these two species are able to survive severe hypoxia beneath macrophyte cover. The possibility of an O2-input through the root system of plants is discussed. The O2-concentration has a significant influence on the locomotory behavior and the frequency of opercular movement in characoids. There is significantly less locomotory activity beneath the macrophytes during periods of oxygen depletion among those species not forced to migrate than among those in the open water regions, where normal ASR behavior is possible.  相似文献

We analyzed the role of the waterways of Belarus in the spread of aquatic exotic invertebrates through the central European invasion corridor. Present day Belarus became critically important when in the end of the 18th—beginning of the 19th century three interbasin canals connecting rivers from the Black and Baltic seas basins were constructed for international trade. These canals became important pathways facilitating the spread of aquatic alien species. For more than a hundred years, only Ponto-Caspian species colonized Belarus using ships and especially timber in rafts exported by Russia into Western Europe. In the second half of the 20th century, new vectors of spread appeared in Belarus, such as stocking of economically important invertebrates and accidental introductions. This paper is the first comprehensive review of aquatic exotic invertebrates in Belarus. Currently, 19 exotic aquatic invertebrates are known in Belarus, including 14 species of Ponto-Caspian origin. The rate of spread of aquatic invasive species in the second half of the 20th century increased 7-fold compared to the 19th—beginning of the 20th century. We found a significant positive correlation between the time since initial invasion and number of waterbodies colonized. We predict a further increase in the rate of colonization of Belarus by exotic invertebrates as well as an increase in the diversity of vectors of spread and donor areas of alien species, especially when the ongoing reconstruction of the interbasin canals will be completed and the hydrological connection between Black Sea and Baltic Sea basins will be reestablished after an interruption that has lasted for almost a century.  相似文献

Substrate vibratory information receptors are extensively studied in insects and spiders, however for water surface dwelling species little data is available. We studied the vibration receptive organs in tarsi of the water strider Aquarius paludum, using light, transmission and scanning electron microscopes, and recorded the neural activity of the organs in response to vibrational stimuli, which were afterwards analysed with a custom made spike sorting program. We found that the tarsal chordotonal organ has one set of three scoloparia: one in the tarsomere I and two in the tarsomere II, all of which consisted of a few scolopidia. The chordotonal organ clearly responded to vibratory stimulation. Furthermore, we found that a pair of large subapical emergent dorsal setae, which had been deemed mechanosensory by previous authors, are not so. In turn, four ventral subapical trichobothria that are in direct contact with the water surface during locomotion, proved to be mechanosensory. The anatomical and ultrastructural observations support these electro-physiological results.  相似文献

Abstract. Data on Culicoides imicola were obtained during studies carried out during the recent outbreak of African horse sickness in Portugal. The previous most northerly published record of C.imicola in Portugal was 38o40'N (Pégöes). In the present work the geographical distribution of this species is extended to the parallel of 41o17'N. We have also confirmed the continuous presence of adult C.imicola in Southern Portugal (Alentejo and Algarve) throughout the year. In the laboratory we obtained this species from a sample of cattle faeces and from another of soil contaminated with animal excreta. In relation to host association 57.37% of C.imicola were trapped in the vicinity of pigsties. Finally, we collected 11 ,463 Culicoides of which 12.47% were C. imicola.  相似文献
