The sediments at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary record a major crisis of pelagic carbonate producers (calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifera). Nevertheless, Maastrichtian-like nannofossils are found in lowermost Danian sediments. Their origin (reworked vs. survivors) is still under debate. A recently developed protocol leading to separation of the various calcareous components included in the lowermost Danian sediments allows evaluation of the nannofossil isotopic signatures across the Cretaceous-Paleocene boundary. Maastrichtian-like nannofossils found in Danian sediments record isotopic ratios (carbon and oxygen) similar to the Cretaceous ones. These results provide evidence that Maastrichtian-like nannofossils are mostly reworked at Bidart.  相似文献

Currently, coccolithophores have a widespread oceanic distribution and are reported from most latitudes, but not those higher than 65°S. Fifteen piston cores were sampled with the aim of investigating the distribution and abundance variation of Quaternary calcareous nannofossils of the Antarctic region, south of the Antarctic Divergence (> 65°S), particularly from Maud Rise, Bausan Bank, and from Weddell, Ross and Bellingshausen Seas. A calcareous nannofossil cold-taxa association is present in most of the cores examined and their discontinuous occurrence is thought to indicate key environmental relationships. The presence of calcareous nannofossils is correlated with interglacial intervals with warmer SSTs and may indicate high productivity and an open-ocean environment. Our results confirm that, during short periods of the late Quaternary, coccolithophorids occurred at southern high latitudes, in the western Antarctic basins, while in the eastern Antarctic basins they are nearly absent, suggesting more variable SSTs near West Antarctic Ice Sheet.  相似文献

本文研究了上海奉贤DY03孔的颗石藻化石。钻孔60.8-2m深度产颗石藻化石,涵盖上更新统的川沙组、南汇组,全新统的娄塘组、上海组和青浦组。颗石藻化石赋存于灰色泥、泥质粉砂或粉细砂中,但化石种类贫乏。群落面貌以Gephyrocapsa oceanica占绝对数量,Braarudosphaera bigelowii,Helicosphaera hyalina和Heli-cosphaera wallichii等偶现,属典型的单种类组合。研究依据颗石藻定量统计,划分出两个海相层:第一海相层,孔深61-40m,属上更新统川沙组和南汇组,颗石藻丰度低,属种单一,代表了海侵过程中的潮上带环境;第二海相层,孔深24.8-2.0m,属全新统娄塘组、上海组和青浦组,颗石藻化石丰度较高,并有数个属种共生,反映当时的滨岸潮上带-河口滨海-浅海近岸海湾的环境演化过程。综合前人的研究成果,认为长江三角洲全新世海侵之强度和范围都超过晚更新世发生的海侵。此外,本文仔细讨论了Gephyrocapsa oceanica的生态特征,显示其为一个盐度适应能力较强、分布广泛的暖水种。  相似文献

Piston core (PS2487-6), recovered south of Cape Town, and sediment surface samples, recovered in the area of the Agulhas Current retroflection, were used to construct paleoceanographic scenarios for the late Quaternary in a region with an important role in global water mass transfer. Coccolithophore (calcareous nannofossil) and planktonic foraminifera assemblages and oxygen isotope data were collected. Stratigraphic control is based on calibration of the δ18O stratigraphic signals with calcareous nannofossil events that are thought to be synchronous over a broad range of latitudes. Study of the surface sediments permits the characterisation of the Agulhas Current, Subtropical Convergence and Subantarctic coccolithophore assemblages. The Agulhas Current assemblage has relatively high proportions of Florisphaera profunda, Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Umbilicosphaera spp. These species are absent or present in low proportions in subantarctic waters. The abundance of coccolithophores during isotope stages 1, 5 and 7 is characteristic of relatively warm, stratified surface waters, with a deep nutricline and chlorophyll maximum, which strongly suggests that the area was under the influence of the Agulhas Current retroflection. The incursion of Globigerinoides ruber, abundant today in the Agulhas Current, also supports this interpretation. Conversely, during glacial stages 2–4 and 6, a strong reduction in warm and stratified water indicators can be observed, together with an increase in cold-eutrophic species.The interval from isotope stages 8 to 12 displays an assemblage dominated by Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica, the highest values being seen in the so-called Mid-Brunhes event, accompanied by a clear reduction in subtropical Holocene species. During the glacial interval from isotope stages 10–12, G. caribbeanica dominated the assemblage. The ecological interpretation of this species is controversial due to a clear evolutionary overprint. Isotope stage 12 is here interpreted as having been the coldest one in the period studied. It is characterised by a strong increase in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextral and sinistral) and a remarkable decrease in tropical and subtropical planktonic foraminifera. From isotope stage 13 to 18, a hiatus is interpreted. Below this hiatus the stratigraphic resolution is poorer, although the glacial–interglacial cyclicity is well defined in the Agulhas Current Retroflection area (Core PS2487-6) for the last 25 isotope stages. The glacial–interglacial cyclicity is thought to be due to a fluctuation in the Subtropical Convergence Zone, probably linked to the eastward and westward displacement of the Agulhas Current retroflection. In any case, the core studied was always in a subtropical environment, under the influence of the Agulhas Current, which was enhanced during interglacial periods. For the whole of the interval studied, increases in Calcidiscus leptoporus, Umbilicosphaera spp., and Syracosphaera spp. among the calcareous nannofossils, and in G. ruber and Globigerinoides sacculifer within the planktonic foraminifera, clearly respond to interglacial pulses, reaching maximum values during short periods close to the major deglaciations.  相似文献

Calcareous nannofossils from Paleocene sediments of two boreholes (Odeska-6 and 20) from the north-western shelf of the Black Sea are examined. Five nannofossil Zones are identified according to the standard zonations of Martini (1971) and Quillévéré et al. (2002): the Chiasmolithus danicus Zone (NP3), the upper part of Ellipsolithus Macellus Zone (NP4b), the Fasciculithus tympaniformis Zone (NP5), the Heliolithus kleinpelli Zone (NP6) and the Heliolithus riedelii Zone (NP8). This biostratigraphical work allows us to correlate the Bilokamian and Kachian regional stages of the Stratigraphic Scheme of Southern Ukraine (Zernetskiy et al., 1993) to the standard nannofossil zonations and, therefore, to the International Chronostratigraphic scheme. The presence of an unconformity between the Bilokamian and Kachian regional stages in the borehole section of Odeska-6 is suggested by Linear Sedimentary Rates estimated for the two boreholes. This unconformity corresponds to the upper part of the Chiasmolithus danicus nannofossil Zone (NP3) and the lower part of Ellipsolithus Macellus (NP4a), and is estimated to last nearly 1.94 Ma.  相似文献

Middle to late Miocene calcareous nannofossil data of ODP Site 1085 from the eastern South Atlantic off Namibia were analysed to document spatial and temporal changes in surface-ocean circulation, upwelling initiation, and associated productivity.

Our data show that calcareous nannofossils constitute a significant part of the carbonate fraction throughout the investigated interval from 12.5 to 7.7 million years (Ma). Highest numbers of calcareous nannofossils (up to 38,000 × 106 nannofossils g− 1 sediment) were observed during the intervals 9.9 to 9.7 and 8.7 to 8.0 Ma. These elevated numbers of calcareous nannofossils may generally be linked to the initiation of upwelling at about 10 Ma in the studied region. In contrast, diminished numbers of calcareous nannoplankton, as in the interval 9.6 to 9.0 Ma, probably characterise time intervals of weaker productivity resulting in a decrease of nannofossil carbonate contents in the sediments of Site 1085. This decrease in nannofossil production could be one possible explanation for the major CaCO3 depression in between 9.6 and 9.0 Ma. Coccoliths of the genus Reticulofenestra are the most abundant taxa. Their occurrences are characterised by changes in the investigated time interval. In addition, Coccolithus pelagicus, Calcidiscus leptoporus and Umbilicosphaera spp. contribute a common part of the assemblage. Calcareous nannofossils account for more than half of the carbonate, with peak contribution up to 80% at 8.8 Ma.  相似文献

The oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions of planktic and benthic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils from Middle Oligocene-Early Miocene Equatorial Atlantic sediments (DSDP Site 354) indicate two important paleoceanographic changes, in the Late Oligocene (foraminiferal Zone P.21) and in the Early Miocene (foraminiferal Zone N.5). The first change, reflected by a δ18O increase of 1.45‰ inGlobigerina venezuelana, affected only intermediate pelagic and not surface, deep or bottom waters. The second change affected surface and intermediate waters, whereas deep and bottom waters showed only minor fluctuations. In the case of the former the isotope effect of the moderate ice accumulation on the Antarctic continent is amplified in the Equatorial Atlantic by changes in the circulation pattern. The latter paleoceanographic change, reflected by a significant increase in18O in both planktic and benthic forms (about 1.0‰ and 0.5‰, respectively), may have been caused by ice volume increase and temperature decrease. Both oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions indicate a marked depth-habitat stratification for planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils. Three different dwelling groups are recognized: shallowGlobigerinoides, Globoquadrina dehiscens, Globorotalia mayeri and nannofossils; intermediateGlobigerina venezuelana; and deepCatapsydrax dissimilis. The comparison of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils suggests that the isotopic compositions of nannofossils are generally controlled by the same parameters which control the isotopic composition of shallow-dwelling foraminifera, but the former are more enriched in18O.  相似文献

The Upper Pliensbachian–Lower Toarcian Somma section (Central Italy), which displays alternation of limestone–marl lithotypes, was investigated for its calcareous nannofossil and CaCO3 contents. In order to evaluate the contribution of calcareous phytoplankton to the carbonate fraction of rocks a new method was applied combining a recently developed technique for nannofossil absolute quantification and measurements of nannofossil size. Our study suggests that nannofossils did not produce the bulk of carbonate mud in the studied section, although they contribute to different extents to the pelagic carbonate fraction. The contribution of both coccoliths and (mainly) the Incertae sedis Schizosphaerella to the carbonate fraction was important only in periods of reduced accumulation rates and/or during clay deposition. The highest estimated carbonate production by nannofossils in the studied section is around 83% of the total carbonate content, but in a sample containing only 12.8 wt% CaCO3. The observed limestone–marl alternations therefore result from cyclical export of carbonate mud from the shallow Latium–Abruzzi carbonate platform to the Umbria–Marche Basin and, only subordinately, from changes in nannoplankton productivity.  相似文献

Abundant and diverse calcareous nannofossil assemblages were found in organic-rich carbonate sequences which accumulated in a Campanian-Maastrichtian upwelling belt along the southeastern Tethys. The sequences studied represent the inner (shallower) and the outer (deeper) parts of the upwelling belt. The paleoenvironmental significance of selected nannofossil taxa and their utility in productivity reconstruction was established by comparing their distribution to foraminifera and dinocyst-based productivity profiles.Based on the calcareous nannofossil assemblages, a high-productivity group and a low-productivity group of species were determined. The distribution of these groups agrees well with the dinocyst- and foraminifera-based productivity curves and, hence, can be used to record paleoproductivity changes.The ratio between the high-productivity and low-productivity nannofossil groups, the Nannofossil Index of Productivity (NIP), is proposed here as a productivity proxy that can be utilized in reconstructing basinal productivity development.A quantitative analysis of the nannofossil assemblages indicates that their abundance and diversity increase towards the open sea, in the outer and less productive part of the upwelling belt. In the inner and more productive part of the upwelling belt, the nannofossils assemblages become less abundant and less diverse relative to those of the open marine environment.Micula decussata and Watznaueria barnesae are common to abundant in most samples. M. decussata becomes more abundant in poorly-preserved samples. On the other hand, the distribution of W. barnesae matches better with intermediate productivity levels.  相似文献

Stable isotopes in tree rings have widely been used for palaeoclimate reconstructions since tree rings record climatic information at annual resolution. However, various wood components or different parts of an annual tree-ring may differ in their isotopic compositions. Thus, sample preparation and subsequent laboratory analysis are crucial for the isotopic signal retained in the final tree-ring isotope series used for climate reconstruction and must therefore be considered for the interpretation of isotope–climate relationships. This study focuses on wood of Corsican Pine trees (Pinus nigra ssp. laricio) as this tree species allows to reconstruct the long-term climate evolution in the western Mediterranean. In a pilot study, we concentrated on methodological issues of sample preparation techniques in order to evaluate isotope records measured on pooled whole tree-ring cellulose and whole tree-ring bulk wood samples. We analysed 80-year long carbon and oxygen chronologies of Corsican Pine trees growing near the upper tree line on Corsica. Carbon and oxygen isotope records of whole tree-ring bulk wood and whole tree-ring cellulose from a pooled sample of 5 trees were correlated with the climate parameters monthly precipitation, temperature and the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI). Results show that the offsets in carbon and oxygen isotopes of bulk wood and cellulose are not constant over time. Both isotopes correlate with climate parameters from late winter and summer. The carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of cellulose are more sensitive to climatic variables than those of bulk wood. The results of this study imply that extraction of cellulose is a pre-requisite for the reconstruction of high-resolution climate records from stable isotope series of P. nigra ssp. laricio.  相似文献

Seven Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites recovered during ODP Leg 177 in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean were analyzed to study the Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil record. Calcareous nannofossil events previously described from intermediate and low latitudes were identified and calibrated with available geomagnetic and stable isotope stratigraphic data. In general, Pleistocene southern high latitude calcareous nannofossil events show synchronicity with those observed from warm and temperate latitudes. The first occurrence (FO) of Emiliania huxleyi and the last occurrence (LO) of Pseudoemiliania lacunosa are observed in marine isotope stages (MIS) 8 and 12, respectively. A reversal in abundance between Gephyrocapsa muellerae and E. huxleyi is observed at MIS 5. MIS 6 is characterized by an increase in G. muellerae and MIS 7 features a dramatic decrease in the proportion of Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica. This latter species began to increase its proportions from MIS 14 to 13. The LO of Reticulofenestra asanoi is observed within subchron C1r.1r and the FO of R. asanoi occurs at the top of C1r.2r. A re-entry of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa can be identified in some cores during subchron C1r.1n. The LO of large morphotypes of Gephyrocapsa is well correlated through the studied area, and occurs during the middle-low part of subchron C1r.2r, synchronous with other oceanic regions. The FO of Calcidiscus macintyrei and FO of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa occur in the studied area close to 1.6 Ma.  相似文献

The Dole effect is defined as the difference between the oxygen isotope composition of atmospheric oxygen and seawater (currently 23.5 parts per thousand) and reflects the balance between processes and fractionations associated with O2 consumption and production by the terrestrial and marine biospheres. Isotopic records from ice cores and ocean sediments provide a means of assessing variations in the Dole effect during the late Quaternary but the biogeochemical interpretation of these changes is limited because we are currently unable to account adequately for vegetation effects on the global isotopic balance of atmospheric O2. Here, I show that the previously unquantified influence of canopy transpiration on the isotopic composition of atmospheric water vapour now closes the mass balance budget for the isotopes of atmospheric O2 under the current climate. Using this new finding, the effects of vegetation on the Dole effect have been assessed at the global scale for the mid-Holocene (6000 years ago). The results indicate that the small reduction in the Dole effect in the mid-Holocene represented a fall in the ratio of terrestrial to marine gross primary production from 1.8 to 1.0. Improved understanding of the environmental and physiological processes controlling the oxygen isotopic composition of plants and their feedback on the isotopes of atmospheric O2 offers considerable promise in quantitatively accounting for the changes in biospheric productivity associated with the Dole effect over glacial–interglacial cycles. In addition, such work should provide an as yet unexploited basis for testing the results of climate models against the oxygen isotope composition of Quaternary plant fossils.  相似文献

Stable oxygen isotope dendrochronology is an effective precision-dating method for fast grown, invariant (complacent) tree-rings and for trees growing in moist, temperate climatic regions where growth may not be strongly controlled by climate. The method works because trees preserve a strong common isotopic signal, from summer precipitation, and therefore do not need to be physiologically stressed to record a dating signal. This study explores the working hypothesis that whilst tree species may differ in their eco-physiology, leaf morphology and wood anatomy they will record an isotopic signal in their growth rings that is sufficiently similar to enable their precise dating against isotopic reference chronologies developed using dated oak tree rings from the same region. Modern and historical samples from six species (sweet chestnut, English elm, ash, alder, European beech and black poplar) were analysed and their oxygen isotopic variability was compared against an oak master chronology previously developed for central southern England. Whilst differences in the relative strength of the agreement between the different species and the master chronology are apparent, the potential for interspecies dating is demonstrated convincingly. The ability to date non-oak species using stable oxygen isotopes opens-up new opportunities for science-based archaeology and will improve understanding of a largely-unexplored, but significant part of the European historical buildings archive.  相似文献

稳定氢氧同位素技术被广泛运用于生态系统、特别是干旱区生态系统中植物水分来源的研究,其理论假设为"水分被植物根系吸收并向木质部运输过程中不发生氢氧同位素分馏"。生态系统中不同水源的氢氧同位素组成普遍存在显著差异,为从水源混合体中区分出各水源的贡献率提供了前提条件。但在实际应用过程中,诸多因素导致稳定氢氧同位素技术定量植物水分来源的结果具有不确定性。综合已有研究并加以分析,举证说明植物吸收水分相对于水源同位素变化的滞后性、水源同位素的季节性变化、蒸发作用和水源之间的混合作用对水源同位素的影响等导致植物水分来源定量结果不确定性的几个因素,以期为今后稳定氢氧同位素技术在植物水分来源领域的应用提供参考。  相似文献

In this paper we present the effects of different tracemakers on the redistribution of calcareous nannofossils throughout the K-Pg boundary at the Bidart section (SW France), along with their consequences for our knowledge of the K-Pg boundary event. Danian calcareous nannofossil assemblages are present in Maastrichtian samples due to infiltration into dark trace fossil infillings proceeding from the earliest Paleogene. This is evidenced by the appearance of abundant paleogene calcareous nannofossils just below the K-Pg boundary, showing the relevance of the trace fossil infillings in the context of the K-Pg boundary event.  相似文献

In this study we present the results of a detailed analysis on calcareous nannofossil assemblages from sediment cores of ODP Site 1263 (Southern East Atlantic, Walvis Ridge). This section represents one of the few complete deep-sea sections that document the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) in the pelagic realm. The PETM transient event was characterized by a brief, but intense interval of global warming, a global negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE), and widespread dissolution of seafloor carbonate sediments. Paired analysis at polarizing light microscope (LM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) documents the different “behavior” of nannofossils through the different phases of the PETM, at the onset of CIE, within the CIE, and during the recovery interval. The presence of anomalous specimens and morphotypes within some nannofossil taxa, recorded during previous LM high resolution analyses, has been further investigated in selected samples at the SEM. Besides the known representatives of the CIE-PETM “excursion nanno-flora”, as Rhomboaster calcitrapa group and Discoaster anartios, the analysis revealed the presence of peculiar morphotypes of Fasciculithus and deformed specimens of Discoaster nobilis group, Discoaster mediosus and Discoaster multiradiatus that are considered related to the anomalous amount of CO2 in the ocean-atmosphere system during the early phase of PETM. Comparative analyses were performed in few selected samples from other PETM sections located at different latitudes in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Although the anomalous geochemical conditions during the PETM-CIE interval seem to have had some influence on the nannofossil production, calcification and assemblage composition, it results that local productivity together with post depositional (diagenetic) conditions were additional important controlling factors on nannofossil assemblages. Preliminary data from Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2 or Elmo) suggest that nannofossil malformations are not exclusive of the PETM, and are associated to other episodes of perturbation of the C cycle.  相似文献

Stable isotope analyses of a uranium-series-dated stalagmite from South Africa provide a record of climate changes for the periods 4400–4000 years and 800 years ago to recent, interrupted by a prolonged growth hiatus. Generally enriched stable oxygen isotope values, interpreted here to indicate more humid conditions, occurred around 800 years ago. Subsequently a marked depletion in oxygen and carbon isotope values occurred about 600 years ago, reflecting, we believe, shifts toward drier, cooler conditions as the regional indication of the Little Ice Age. This period with depleted, yet oscillating isotope values, is replaced by a period with enriched isotopes until recent times. The record is notable for sharp shifts in isotopic values, on the scale of decades, which reflect rapid oscillations in local climate conditions.  相似文献

A high resolution calcareous nannofossil study associated with a geochemical analysis (major, trace elements, and carbon and oxygen isotope stratigraphies) was carried out in the Angles section (hemipelagic setting of the Vocontian basin, SE France) during the Valanginian positive carbon isotope excursion. The behaviour of calcareous nannofossil taxa in relation to fertility conditions was studied to elaborate new nutrient indices in this environment: a high nutrient index based on Biscutum spp., Discorhabdus rotatorius, Zeugrhabdotus fissus, (high fertility indicators) and Watznaueria barnesae (low fertility indicator); and a medium nutrient index based on Lithraphidites carniolensis (medium fertility indicator) and W. barnesae (low fertility indicator). These two indices show a major fertilization from the Stephanophorus ammonite Zone to the Trinodosum ammonite Zone, with a maximum during the positive carbon isotope excursion.Since high values of the nutrient indices are in phase with high values of chemical elements related to terrigenous material and low values of the coccolith total abundance, it is proposed that pulses of detrital inputs into the basin triggered the nutrification which, in turn, caused a biocalcification crisis of the calcareous nannofossils. Nutrification is also responsible for the reef demise in the surrounded platforms, as indicated by the increased Sr/Ca seawater ratio at that time.The intensification of the Paranà–Etendeka volcanic activity, triggering CO2 excess in the atmosphere, is probably responsible for an acceleration of the hydrological cycle, the increased weathering, and the subsequent higher terrigenous and nutrient transfer from continents to the Vocontian basin. In such a scenario, nutrification is a dominant factor controlling neritic and hemipelagic biocalcification. However, one cannot exclude that the global increase of atmospheric CO2 could generate chemical changes of the sea-surface waters, acting with the nutrification, to modify the biocalcification of the carbonate producers.  相似文献
