Sedimentological study of 20 piston cores from the northwestern Labrador Sea shows that thin bedded distal turbidites are important constituents of the Quaternary strata on the continental slope and rise. Sedimentation on the outer shelf (ca. 500–900 m) is dominated by ice-rafting and hemipelagic deposition. Detailed study of two outer shelf cores reveals a stratigraphic record extending to oxygen isotopic stage 9. Studies of foraminifera and dinoflagellates show that subarctic surface waters penetrated into the northern Labrador Sea during the early-middle glacial stages and pollen data indicate that northward advection of warm air masses occurred at the same time. Microfossil data indicate that late glacial stages were characterized by year around sea-ice cover and arctic surface water, and by the dominance of cold, dry Arctic air masses. Transitions from glacial to interglacial stages are marked by the presence of low salinity melt water. These data support models which postulate that open water in the Labrador Sea played an important role in supplying moisture to Laurentide and Greenland ice-sheets.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifera in a gravity core from Shatsky Rise (northwestern Pacific, water depth 2612 m) show large fluctuations in accumulation rate, species composition and diversity over the last 298 kyr. The most important fluctuations (explaining more than 90% of the faunal variance) result from variations in relative abundance of the three most abundant species: Epistominella exigua, Alabaminella weddellensis and Uvigerina peregrina. High accumulation rates of U. peregrina, a species linked to high, continuous productivity, occurred with a 100 kyr periodicity at the end of glacial stages, and correspond to high mass accumulation rates of organic carbon. Peak accumulation rates of E. exigua occurred during glacial stage 4 and the middle part of glacial stages 8 and 6, whereas A. weddellensis was dominant in the early part of stages 8 and 6, and the late part of stage 3. A high abundance of these species probably indicates lower overall productivity than a high abundance of U. peregrina, and their relative and absolute abundances may be linked not simply to the amount of organic matter delivered to the sea floor, but to the intermittent delivery of fresh, easily degraded organic matter. The overall species diversity is negatively correlated to the relative abundance of E. exigua, but not to that of A. weddellensis, implying that these species have different environmental preferences, although both have been linked to periodic phytodetritus deposition in the present oceans.  相似文献

Oxygen isotope analysis of planktonic and benthic foraminifera in piston core S-2 collected from the Shatsky Rise (33°21.75N, 159°07.70E; water depth 3107 m) provides a paleoceanographic record for the last 540 000 years in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Although peaks in the abundance of sinistral Neogloboquadrina pachyderma occur during Marine Isotope Stage 2, and particularly 6 and 12, the southward shifting of the Subarctic front did not reach the core site during these glacial periods. However, mass accumulation rates of total organic carbon, biogenic opal, and terrigenous matter contents indicate that surface productivity increased during cold periods. In addition, the C/N ratio analyzed in organic matter reached values of up to 10 during glacial periods. These results imply that delivery of eolian dust to this site was enhanced by strengthened westerly winds during glacial periods. Down-core fluctuations in δ13C values of Globigerinoides ruber and Globorotalia inflata nearly overlap, particularly during the period from 540 to 260 ka. This latter trend suggest that the subtropical surface water mass prevailed at the core site throughout that period, based upon the very small vertical δ13C gradient through water column in modern Kuroshio Current water.  相似文献

The gephyrocapsids, main component of the Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil assemblages, are here discussed as biostratigraphical and paleoclimate tools. The occurrence of the genus Gephyrocapsa is quantitatively analysed in the core ODP 198-1209B, collected in the NW Pacific Ocean. The studied stratigraphic succession covers a time interval including the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT), a highly investigated period characterized by important global climate changes. During the Pleistocene, Gephyrocapsa is extremely abundant and provides several bioevents used in biostratigraphy. In addition to the known standard events, we observe the occurrence of particular Gephyrocapsa morphogroups and significant changes in the relative abundance of G. caribbeanica. In the Early-Middle Pleistocene we identify four intervals based on the Gephyrocapsa content. Moreover, during the MPT, the stratigraphic distribution of Gephyrocapsa underlines a dominance of both the small morphogroup and the medium-sized G. caribbeanica that could be dependent on their paleoecology. Small Gephyrocapsa and G. caribbeanica seem to be more competitive than other coccolithophores during the global oceanographic variations and the re-organisation of the glacial-interglacial periodicity during the MPT.  相似文献

The general model of thermoregulation of ectotherms predicts that thermally challenging environments select for evolution of thermoconformity. Studies of reptilian thermoregulation at climatic extremes are rare and, in the subarctic zone, completely lacking. Thermal characteristics of the habitat of the lizard Zootoca vivipara were studied in the subarctic zone, at the northern margin of its distribution, where lizard density was already extremely low. We found that, during the activity period, the preferred body temperatures of Z. vivipara were not available for a thermoconformer, but available for 7 h for a thermoregulator in an average day. Therefore, thermoconformity is unbeneficial and accurate thermoregulation should be the appropriate strategy. We hypothesise that the extremely low lizard abundance at our subarctic study site is caused by the short activity season and the large daily temperature fluctuations, with night temperatures occasionally falling below zero even during the activity period.  相似文献

Thick sections of Pliocene and Pleistocene biosiliceous clay and ooze were recovered by the Hydraulic Piston Corer (HPC) at three northwest Pacific sites (DSDP Sites 578, 579, and 580). They contain a well-preserved paleomagnetic record which made it possible to evaluate diatom events used in low and high latitudes in the transitional region of the northwest Pacific. Equatorial Pacific events are usually isochronous between the equatorial and subarctic regions. However, species which have short ranges in low latitudes tend to have diachronous first and last appearances in higher latitudes. All subarctic North Pacific datum species are present in the sediments at three sites which lie north and south across the subarctic front, but their ranges become shorter in southern regions. They do not penetrate into the equatorial region. Spatial distributions of these events are influenced by the paleo-position of the subarctic front. The migration of species from their home-area outwards, in the form of the first appearance, is related to the fluctuations of the subarctic front. The last appearance of species is a response to the change of the surface water temperature that is beyond the limit of tolerance of the species, or an unstable oceanic environment due to major change of climate.  相似文献

Community composition of Bacteria in the surface and deep water layers were examined at three oceanic sites in the Pacific Ocean separated by great distance, i.e., the South China Sea (SCS) in the western tropical Pacific, the Costa Rica Dome (CRD) in the eastern tropical Pacific and the western subarctic North Pacific (SNP), using high throughput DNA pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Bioinformatic analysis rendered a total of 143600 high quality sequences with an average 11967 sequences per sample and mean read length of 449 bp. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Proteobacteria dominated in all shallow and deep waters, with Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria the two most abundant components, and SAR11 the most abundant group at family level in all regions. Cyanobacteria occurred mainly in the surface euphotic layer, and the majority of them in the tropical waters belonged to the GpIIa family including Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, whilst those associated with Cryptophytes and diatoms were common in the subarctic waters. In general, species richness (Chao1) and diversity (Shannon index H′) were higher for the bacterial communities in the intermediate water layers than for those in surface and deep waters. Both NMDS plot and UPGMA clustering demonstrated that bacterial community composition in the deep waters (500 m ∼2000 m) of the three oceanic regions shared a high similarity and were distinct from those in the upper waters (5 m ∼100 m). Our study indicates that bacterial community composition in the DOC-poor deep water in both tropical and subarctic regions were rather stable, contrasting to those in the surface water layers, which could be strongly affected by the fluctuations of environmental factors.  相似文献

A new method merges conventional and quantitative biostratigraphic approaches, supported by magnetic polarity data, to develop a chronological framework for sediment core MD03-2595 retrieved on the continental rise off Wilkes Land, East Antarctica before proceeding to paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic analysis. This combined method helped to identify climatic cycles, highlight stratigraphic discontinuities and reworking, and assess regional sedimentological and diatom biostratigraphic evolution. Core MD03-2595 spans the last 0.8 Ma, from the Mid Pleistocene Transition (MPT) to the Early Holocene. A hiatus including Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 19, 18 and 17 was identified, and a decreasing trend in sediment accumulation rates from MIS 16 to the Holocene was observed. This quantitative diatom biostratigraphic dataset, placed in its own sedimentological and paleomagnetic context, provides new information regarding the paleobiogeographic distribution and ecological responses of biostratigraphically significant diatom species, such as Thalassiosira elliptipora and T. fasciculata, for the Matuyama–Brunhes (M–B) transition, and Actinocyclus ingens, Hemidiscus karstenii and Rouxia spp. for the middle and late Pleistocene diatom biozonation.  相似文献

Piston core (PS2487-6), recovered south of Cape Town, and sediment surface samples, recovered in the area of the Agulhas Current retroflection, were used to construct paleoceanographic scenarios for the late Quaternary in a region with an important role in global water mass transfer. Coccolithophore (calcareous nannofossil) and planktonic foraminifera assemblages and oxygen isotope data were collected. Stratigraphic control is based on calibration of the δ18O stratigraphic signals with calcareous nannofossil events that are thought to be synchronous over a broad range of latitudes. Study of the surface sediments permits the characterisation of the Agulhas Current, Subtropical Convergence and Subantarctic coccolithophore assemblages. The Agulhas Current assemblage has relatively high proportions of Florisphaera profunda, Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Umbilicosphaera spp. These species are absent or present in low proportions in subantarctic waters. The abundance of coccolithophores during isotope stages 1, 5 and 7 is characteristic of relatively warm, stratified surface waters, with a deep nutricline and chlorophyll maximum, which strongly suggests that the area was under the influence of the Agulhas Current retroflection. The incursion of Globigerinoides ruber, abundant today in the Agulhas Current, also supports this interpretation. Conversely, during glacial stages 2–4 and 6, a strong reduction in warm and stratified water indicators can be observed, together with an increase in cold-eutrophic species. The interval from isotope stages 8 to 12 displays an assemblage dominated by Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica, the highest values being seen in the so-called Mid-Brunhes event, accompanied by a clear reduction in subtropical Holocene species. During the glacial interval from isotope stages 10–12, G. caribbeanica dominated the assemblage. The ecological interpretation of this species is controversial due to a clear evolutionary overprint. Isotope stage 12 is here interpreted as having been the coldest one in the period studied. It is characterised by a strong increase in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextral and sinistral) and a remarkable decrease in tropical and subtropical planktonic foraminifera. From isotope stage 13 to 18, a hiatus is interpreted. Below this hiatus the stratigraphic resolution is poorer, although the glacial–interglacial cyclicity is well defined in the Agulhas Current Retroflection area (Core PS2487-6) for the last 25 isotope stages. The glacial–interglacial cyclicity is thought to be due to a fluctuation in the Subtropical Convergence Zone, probably linked to the eastward and westward displacement of the Agulhas Current retroflection. In any case, the core studied was always in a subtropical environment, under the influence of the Agulhas Current, which was enhanced during interglacial periods. For the whole of the interval studied, increases in Calcidiscus leptoporus, Umbilicosphaera spp., and Syracosphaera spp. among the calcareous nannofossils, and in G. ruber and Globigerinoides sacculifer within the planktonic foraminifera, clearly respond to interglacial pulses, reaching maximum values during short periods close to the major deglaciations.  相似文献

Fossil diversity and abundance fluctuations of Late Devonian (Famennian)—Early Mississippian (Tournaisian) phytoplankton assemblages were determined in a stratigraphic sequence of samples in Barberton test core 3, from northeast Ohio. Both diversity and abundance were relatively high during deposition of the lower Chagrin Shale (Upper Devonian) and both decreased during deposition of the upper Chagrin Shale. The overlying Cleveland Shale (Upper Devonian) is characterized by sharply increased abundance with a corresponding (although less marked) increase in diversity; in contrast, both abundance and diversity were at relatively low levels during deposition of the Lower Mississippian Bedford Shale, the uppermost unit of the sequence. These trends agree with the phytoplankton periodicity model presented by Tappan, which indicates large-scale extinction at the end of the Devonian. Many of the acritarch and prasinophycean algal taxa have restricted stratigraphic occurrences within the section studied, making them useful for local and perhaps worldwide correlation. The stratigraphically restricted taxa provide a basis for the proposal of five biostratigraphic zones within the Upper Famennian (Upper Devonian) and a portion of the Lower Mississippian. In ascending order occur: the Gorgonisphaeridium ohioense Assemblage Zone, the Acriora petala Assemblage Zone, the Muraticavea enteichia Range Zone, the Cymatiosphaera labyrinthica Range Zone, and the Navifusa drosera Assemblage Zone.  相似文献

A long-term record of Asian dust storms showed seven high-occurrence-frequency centers in China. The intrusion of Asian dust into the downwind seas, including the China seas, the Sea of Japan, the subarctic North Pacific, the North Pacific subtropical gyre, and the western and eastern Equatorial Pacific, has been shown to add nutrients to ocean ecosystems and enhance their biological activities. To explore the relationship between the transported dust from various sources to the six seas and oceanic biological activities with different nutrient conditions, the correlation between monthly chlorophyll a concentration in each sea and monthly dust storm occurrence frequencies reaching the sea during 1997–2007 was examined in this study. No correlations were observed between dust and chlorophyll a concentration in the <50 m China seas because atmospheric deposition is commonly believed to exert less impact on coastal seas. Significant correlations existed between dust sources and many sea areas, suggesting a link between dust and chlorophyll a concentration in those seas. However, the correlation coefficients were highly variable. In general, the correlation coefficients (0.54–0.63) for the Sea of Japan were highest, except for that between the subarctic Pacific and the Taklimakan Desert, where it was as high as 0.7. For the >50 m China seas and the North Pacific subtropical gyre, the correlation coefficients were in the range 0.32–0.57. The correlation coefficients for the western and eastern Equatorial Pacific were relatively low (<0.36). These correlation coefficients were further interpreted in terms of the geographical distributions of dust sources, the transport pathways, the dust deposition, the nutrient conditions of oceans, and the probability of dust storms reaching the seas.  相似文献

Relative role of intrinsic density‐dependent factors (such as inter‐ and intraspecific competition, predation) and extrinsic density‐independent factors (environmental changes) in population dynamics is a key issue in ecology. Density‐dependent mechanisms are considered as important drivers of population dynamics in many vertebrate and insect species; however, their influence on the population dynamics of freshwater invertebrates is not clearly understood. In this study, I examined interannual variations in the abundance of the glacial relict amphipod Monoporeia affinis in a small subarctic lake based on long‐term (2002–2019) monitoring data. The results suggest that the population dynamics of amphipods in the lake is influenced by the combined effects of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The reproductive success of amphipod cohorts was inversely related to its initial abundance, indicating it is influenced by density‐dependent factors. Maffinis recruitment was negatively correlated with population density and near‐bottom temperature but positively correlated with food availability, which is defined as the concentration of chlorophyll a. Multiple regression with chlorophyll, temperature, and abundance of parent cohort as independent factors explained about 80% of the variation in the reproductive success of amphipods. The negative correlation between amphipod recruitment and water temperature indicates that the current climate conditions adversely affect the populations of glacial relict amphipods even in cold‐water lakes of the subarctic zone. Results of this study can be useful in environmental assessments to separate population oscillations connected with density‐dependent mechanisms from human‐mediated changes.  相似文献

Planktonic foraminiferal analyses of six deep-sea sediment cores from the central North Atlantic east of the Azores Islands between 37°N and 40°N show distinct oscillations in planktonic foramineferal assemblages during the last 300,000 years. A paleoclimatic curve has been constructed using “Total Fauna Analysis” that reveals three glacial and four interglacial episodes. Relatively minor climatic oscillations are superimposed upon the major glacial-interglacial episodes. The paleoclimatic curve is similar to previous paleoclimatic curves from the Atlantic and adjacent areas. Minor paleoclimatic fluctuations are more distinct in paleoclimatic curves from high latitudes of the Atlantic. The faunal assemblages are transitional between subarctic and subtropical assemblages. During portions of the interglacial episodes, the assemblage is dominated by Globorotalia inflata. Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextral-coiling) or Globigerina bulloides dominate during the remainder of the interglacial episodes and during the glacial episodes. Glacial episodes are also marked by particularly high frequencies of Globigerina quinqueloba and Globorotalia scitula. Interglacial episodes are also marked by increases in Globorotalia truncatulinoides, Globigerinoides ruber, and Globigerinella aequilateralis. The planktonic foraminiferal faunal oscillations in the cores are complex and cannot be entirely explained by temperature variation. Other parameters such as salinity, nutrients and biological competitin must influence the faunal oscillations. The faunas suggest no major planktonic foraminiferal faunal boundaries migrated across the area between 37°N and 40°N in the central North Atlantic during the last 300,000 years.  相似文献

In the sediments along the coastal region of Peru, certain radiolarian species have preferences to waters associated with upwelling. Such is the case forPolysolenia murrayana in the upwelling areas “fed” by equatorial water and forCenosphaera (?) sp. in the upwelling areas “fed” by temperate (Subantarctic) water.Cycladophora (?)davisiana appears to “frame” the upwelling centers, suggesting that it prefers regions near thermic fronts. The down-core records of these species, as well as records of quartz and organic carbon, are depicted in three14C andδ18O dated cores, located along the Pacific coast of South America, between 11° and 13°S. They suggest that both the eolian and oceanic circulation were more intense during the last glacial stage (approximately between 33,000 and 11,000 years ago) than during the present postglacial. At these latitudes, the intensification in circulation was not only accompanied by an increased coastal upwelling and in turn by an increased primary productivity, but also by a larger supply of Temperate waters to the area.  相似文献

High-resolution records of diatoms, silicoflagellates, and geochemistry covering the past 15,000 years were studied in three cores from the Gulf of Alaska (GOA). Core EW0408-85JC in an oceanic setting on the Kayak Slope displays a paleoceanographic record similar to that at several locations on the California margin during deglaciation. Biologic productivity as reconstructed using geochemical and microfossil proxies increased abruptly during the Bølling–Alleröd (Bø–Al) warm interval (14.7–12.9 cal ka), declined during the Younger Dryas (YD) cold interval (12.9 to 11.7 cal kyr BP), and rose again during the earliest Holocene. At this site, the record after ~ 11 cal kyr BP is dominated by oceanic diatoms and silicoflagellates, with geochemical proxies displaying more subtle variation.Cores EW0408-66JC in the Yakobi Sea Valley near Cross Sound and EW0408-11JC in the Gulf of Esquibel contain an expanded, composite record along the southeast Alaskan margin. Core 66JC contains a detailed record of the Bø–Al and YD. Diatoms and silicoflagellates indicate that coastal upwelling and biosiliceous productivity were strong during the Bø–Al but declined during the YD. Sea ice-related diatoms increased in abundance during the YD, indicating cooler, but less productive waters. The glacial to biogenic marine sediment transition in core 11JC occurs at 1280 cmbsf (centimeters below sea floor), probably representing rising sea level and deglaciation early in the Bø–Al. Freshwater and sea-ice related diatoms are common in the lower part of the core (Bø–Al and YD), but upwelling-related diatoms and silicoflagellates quickly increased in relative abundance up-core, dominating the record of the past 11,000 years. Low oxygen conditions in the bottom water as reconstructed using geochemical proxies (U and Mo concentration) were most intense between ~ 6.5 and 2.8 cal kyr BP, the beginning of which is coincident with increases in abundance of upwelling-related diatoms. The records from these three cores jointly thus made it possible to reconstruct paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic conditions at high northern Pacific latitudes during the last 15 kyr.  相似文献

Lake Biwa is situated in western Honshu, and is the largest and oldest freshwater lake in Japan. During 1982–1983, a long core was drilled to a bottom depth of 1422 m in order to investigate the palaeolimnological record, which contains 911 m of various sedimentary units overlying Palaeozoic–Mesozoic basements. A 249.5-m core of the uppermost bed (T Bed) was palynologically examined at intervals of ca. 2 m. The investigated part of the core covers approximately the last 430,000 years of the mid-Upper Pleistocene and Holocene, and five glacial–interglacial cycles can be recognized. Ten major vegetational zones could be recognized from the bottom to the surface. The zones bearing even numbers, BW-10, 8, 6, 4 and 2, matched glacial periods in which pollen of subarctic taxa (Pinaceae, Betula) and cool–temperate taxa (Fagus, Lepidobalanus) was dominant. In the glacial periods, high pollen values for temperate conifers such as Cryptomeria, Cupressaceae and Sciadopitys indicate interstadial periods. Zones bearing odd numbers, BW-9, 7, 5, 3 and 1, matched interglacial periods with high pollen values for the warm–temperate taxon Cyclobalanopsis, or showed the characteristic appearance of Lagerstroemia, and temperate coniferous taxa (Cryptomeria, Cupressaceae). There were two vegetational types in the interglacial periods. One was the type indicated by BW-9 and 1 zones, when warm–temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees such as Cyclobalanopsis and Castanopsis showed high pollen values, and the warm–temperate deciduous broad-leaved tree Lagerstroemia was lacking. The climate of these interglacial periods seems to have been cold and dry in winter, and warm and wet in summer. The other was the vegetational type recorded in BW-7, 5 and 3 zones, where Lagerstroemia showed low pollen values, and the warm–temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees mentioned above were poorly represented. The climate seems to have been mild and wet in winter, and cool and wet in summer. The dominant pollen values for cool–temperate deciduous broad-leaved taxa such as Fagus and Lepidobalanus are very important indicators of the initiation of both glacial and interglacial periods in western Japan.  相似文献

Radiolarian and paleomagnetic studies of 59 Antarctic piston cores reveal that since the middle Gauss (t ? 3 m.y.) radiolarian faunas from the southern Ross Sea consistently have lacked certain species commonly found just to the north in the Southern Ocean. Common Antarctic species generally absent from southern Ross Sea sediments include: Spongopyle osculosus, Cenosphaera nagatai, Chromyechinus antarctica, Stylatractus neptumus, Diploplegma banzare, Prunopyle titan, and Desmospyris spongiosa. These species appear to have consistently preferred water slightly warmer than that of the southern Ross Sea. Their occurrence at intervals in cores from the northern Ross Sea and from north of the Ross Sea has been used as a quantitative paleoclimatic indicator. The resulting paleoclimatic curves reveal that the early Gauss was warmer than the late Gauss, the Matuyama and the Brunhes. Warm and cold periods during the Matuyama and the Brunhes appear to be of equal amplitude. Temperatures in the region since the early Gauss were never warmer by more than about 3°C than they are today. Radiolarian abundance and diversity appear to have been controlled primarily by changes in factors affecting their production.  相似文献

A critical review of all available data on acritarch biostratigraphy and diversity dynamics across the Late Ordovician through the early Silurian, permits a better appreciation of the potential of acritarchs for the recognition of the systemic boundary. This analysis also reveals the response of marine microphytoplankton populations to the Late Ordovician palaeoenvironmental crisis (Hirnantian glaciation). Previous zonal schemes are improved, and an updated acritarch biostratigraphic chart is proposed, plotted against the most recent chronostratigraphic subdivisions. Sections from Anticosti Island (Québec, Canada), Algeria, Morocco, and Estonia preserve the best palynological record for the investigated interval. The present analysis shows that no true mass-extinction event occurred in latest Ordovician times in connection with the well known glacial event. “Pre-glacial” Ashgill acritarch suites are dominated by species of Baltisphaeridium, Multiplicisphaeridium, Ordovicidium, Orthosphaeridium, and netromorph acritarchs. An important proportion of these taxa (excluding Ordovicidium and Orthosphaeridium) survive the onset of glacial conditions in Hirnantian (latest Ordovician) times and continues through the early Silurian. The development of morphological polymorphism appears as a response (a survival strategy?) to the establishment of glacial conditions. In glacial-related sediments of Hirnantian age in North Africa, acritarch assemblages display a burst of relative abundance and intra-specific morphological variability (polymorphism) of long-ranging taxa such as Veryhachium, Multiplicisphaeridium, Dactylofusa, Poikilofusa, and Evittia. The extinction of several species characteristic of Upper to uppermost Ordovician strata occurs near the boundary, in “post-glacial” Ashgill (uppermost Hirnantian). This extinction event is counterbalanced by the almost contemporaneous (within the limits of stratigraphic resolution) appearance of several new taxa showing already a clear “Silurian affinity”, e.g., Tylotopalla, Cymbosphaeridium, and Visbysphaera. This origination event is observable in, and correlatable between the North African, the Bohemian and the Anticosti sections, making it global in extent. The completion of the palynological turnover and the establishment of a diverse Silurian acritarch suite occurs well above the base of the Silurian, during Aeronian times. The strong survival capability of the oceanic plankton through periods of palaeoenvironmental crisis in latest Ordovician times (but also throughout the Phanerozoic) could have played an important role in the post-extinction rebounds of metazoan clades, by assuring the continuity of marine trophic resources to consumers and avoiding irreversible disruptions of the trophic chains.  相似文献

Feeding habits of the Pacific pomfret Brama japonica , ranging from 30 to 40 cm in standard length, were quantitatively evaluated using the index of relative importance and were compared between the transitional domain and subarctic region in the central North Pacific. In the transitional domain (between the subarctic boundary and the subarctic front), this species fed mainly on subarctic and transitional‐water gonatid squids such as Berryteuthis anonychus , Gonatus middendorffi and Gonatopsis borealis , the transitional‐water squid Onychoteuthis borealijaponica , and a subtropical and transitional‐water amphipod, Phronima sedentaria . These prey items accounted for 52·8% by wet mass of total stomach contents. In the subarctic region (north of the subarctic front), Pacific pomfrets preyed primarily on subarctic and transitional‐water squids, such as B. anonychus and G. middendorffi , and secondarily on subarctic amphipods such as Hyperia medusarum and Hyperia glaba . These four prey items comprised 71·6% by mass of total stomach contents. Major transitional domain prey items, such as G. borealis, O. borealijaponica and P. sedentaria , were almost non‐existent in stomachs of fish from the subarctic region. The mean wet stomach content mass expressed as a percentage of body mass was significantly higher in the subarctic region (2·35%) than in the transitional domain (0·75%), suggesting that, for this fish, prey items are more readily available in the subarctic region during summer and their northward migration is a feeding migration. Feeding strategy of the Pacific pomfret was discussed in relation to their seasonal south‐north migration.  相似文献
