Sister-sister, brother-brother and sister-brother similarities in both tibial length and stature from one month through 10 years are in accord with the hypothesis of partial X-linkage, they reject the hypothesis of selective inactivation of an X chromosome, and they indicate that the complex that is body length is suited to simplistic analysis.  相似文献

In the wormlike chain (Kratky-Porod) model of DNA the stiffness of the chain is determined by the persistence length, a. The persistence length may be evaluated from light-scattering measurements of the molecular weight and the mean-square radius if the samples are not polydisperse or if the polydispersity can be quantitatively determined. The persistence length can also be evaluated with the aid of hydro dynamic theory from measurements of intrinsic viscosity and sedimentation coefficient. Data taken from the literature and from other studies by the authors are examined by these methods. The light-scattering method yields a value of a of 900 ± 200 Å the hydrodynamic data yield 600 ± 100 Å. These values are considerably larger than those obtained by most previous authors.  相似文献

A combined influence of stimulus orientation and structure on the judgement of length was tested in psychophysiological experiments. The subjects adjusted the test part of a stimulus to be equal in length to the reference part. The orientation of the parts of the stimulus varied in the experiments. The stimuli (three dots or the Oppel-Kundt figure, which had ten dots within the filled part) were generated on the monitor. In the Oppel-Kundt figure, the filled part was considered as a reference and the empty part as a test. In sessions of the experiments, values of errors were measured as functions of the size and orientation of the stimulus. The reference part length varied within 14–150 min arc range, and the orientation was fixed in 0°, 90°, 180° or 270° positions. The orientation of the test part varied from 0° to 360° in 7° steps. We assume, that the experiments with the three-dot stimuli yielded pure characteristics of visual field anisotropy, while those with the Oppel-Kundt figure showed the combined effect of both the components (anisotropy and spatial filtering). The data demonstrated independence of the two factors from each other in a simultaneous manifestation. The characteristics of a pure Oppel-Kundt illusion have been found to be in close correspondence with the predictions of the model of spatial filtering. Control of cell dimensions is an important but poorly understood aspect of morphogenesis. In this review, our primary focus is on control of cell length in different types of cells and cytoskeletal regulation of this parameter. Cell length is not a constant characteristic of certain cell type but of cells of fibroblastic morphology. Since cytoskeleton organization can change during different processes of morphogenesis changes in length control during cell spreading, epithelio-mesenchymal transformation and also in neoplastic transformation are discussed.  相似文献

Maximum length reached by fishes is an important parameter that is highly correlated with metabolism and most other life-history traits. However, obtaining maximum length estimates for commercial fishes has become difficult due to the extirpation of large specimens by intensive fishing. Empirical equations are presented that can be used to derive maximum length of fish from length at first maturity, and vice versa.  相似文献

Skull length is the measurement most commonly used as a standard against which other aspects of cranial morphology are compared to derive an index of relative size or proportions. However, skull length is composed of two different functional components, facial skull and cerebral skull, which vary independently and have different scaling relationships with body size. An analysis of carnivore skull shape with measurements standardized against basicranium length produced very different results than an analysis using skull length as the standard. For example, expressions of relative size of cranial measurements were reduced by 13% in mustelids and increased by 20% in canids, reflecting removal of jaw length (short in mustelids and long in canids) from the comparative standard (basicranial axis length). Cranial measurements scale with higher allometric exponents against basicranial axis length than against skull length.  相似文献

We examine variation in the rate of growth in length of breast-feeding infants from rural Bangladesh. These data were collected between November 1985 and February 1986 from two rural sites. Eighty-eight infants, ranging from birth to 4 months of age at the start of the study and their mothers were measured monthly for 4 months. Length increased linearly with age over this 4-month period (infants' average bias-adjusted R2 = 0.90). The relationship between infant rate of growth in length and attained length was analyzed by two different methods: Oldham's (1962) method of regressing rate of growth on mean length and Blomqvist's (1977) method of regressing rate of growth on estimated initial length. The methods gave similar results. The rate of growth was negatively associated with mean infant length over the 4-month period (p less than 0.001); that is, shorter infants grew at a faster rate than longer infants. For every centimeter shorter the infant was, the rate of growth was 0.1 cm/mo faster on average; the effect was greater among males than among females. The average rate of growth was greater for males than for females and greater in financially solvent households and varied by site. Infant growth rate was slower among older infants than among younger infants, as expected. However, after adjusting for mean infant length, age was no longer significantly associated with infant growth rate, although mean infant length remained highly significant. Forty-one percent of the variation in infant rate of growth in length was explained by mean infant length, sex, sex by length interaction, household financial solvency, and site.  相似文献

Terminal restriction fragment analysis is the only method currently available for measuring telomere length in Caenorhabditis elegans. Its limitations include low sensitivity and interference by the presence of interstitial telomeric sequences in the C.elegans genome. Here we report the adaptation of single telomere length analysis (STELA) to measure the length of telomeric repeats on the left arm of chromosome V in C.elegans. This highly sensitive PCR-based method allows telomere length measurement from as few as a single worm. The application of STELA to eight wild-type C.elegans strains revealed considerable strain-specific differences in telomere length. Within individual strains, short outlying telomeres were observed that were clearly distinct from the bulk telomere length distributions, suggesting that processes other than end-replication losses and telomerase-mediated lengthening may generate telomere length heterogeneity in C.elegans. The utility of this method was further demonstrated by the characterization of telomere shortening in mrt-2 mutants. We conclude that STELA appears to be a valuable tool for studying telomere biology in C.elegans.  相似文献

Inheritance of glume length and grain length in the hybrids Triticum polonicum with T. durum cv. Kharkivs'ka 19 has been studied. The results show that the "polonicumity" complex inherits as unfully recessive and monogene trait. Positive correlation between glume length and grain length has been shown. It has been revealed that more exact plant distribution to segregation classes is observed for the glume at the second floret than at the first one.  相似文献

The de novo design and biophysical characterization of three series of two-stranded alpha-helical coiled coils with different chain lengths are described. Our goal was to examine how increasing chain length would affect protein folding and stability when one or more heptad repeat(s) of K-A-E-A-L-E-G (gabcdef) was inserted into the central region of different coiled-coil host proteins. This heptad was designed to maintain the continuous 3-4 hydrophobic repeat of the coiled-coil host and introduce an Ala and Leu residue in the hydrophobic core at the a and d position, respectively, and a pair of stabilizing interchain ionic i to i' + 5 (g to e') interactions per heptad inserted. The secondary structures of the three series of disulfide-bridged polypeptides were studied by CD spectroscopy and their stabilities determined by chemical and thermal denaturation. The results showed that successive insertions of this heptad systematically decreased the stability of all the coiled coils studied regardless of the overall initial stability of the host coiled coil. These observations are in contrast to the generally accepted implication that the folding and stability of coiled coils are enhanced with increasing chain length. Our results imply that, in these examples where an Ala and Leu hydrophobic residue were introduced into the coiled-coil core per inserted heptad, there was still insufficient stability to overcome unfavorable entropy associated with chain length extension, even though the inserted heptad contained the most stabilizing hydrophobic residue (Leu) at position d and stabilizing ionic attractions.  相似文献

Human femoral neck length has a positive allometric or isometric relationship with total femoral length as shown by the reduced major axis slope based on logarithmic regression. The relatively long femoral neck lengths of Australopithecus cannot be explained solely as a consequence of small body size (contra Wolpoff, '78).  相似文献
