Long-distance transplantation of seed material as done in restoration programs has raised concerns about the risks associated with the introduction of maladapted genotypes that may hybridize with neighboring native conspecifics and decrease local population fitness (outbreeding depression). We studied the consequences of gene flow from foreign provenances into local populations in the common grassland species Plantago lanceolata (Plantaginaceae). Three generations of intraspecific hybrids (F(1), F(2), and backcross to the local plants) were produced by controlled crossings between local plants and plants from geographically or environmentally distant populations. Their performance was compared to that of within-population crosses in a field experiment. Early growth in some interpopulation hybrids was significantly reduced, and this decrease in performance was higher in progeny of crosses with the local population from a different habitat than with geographically distant populations. At the end of the growing season, most fitness-related traits of the interpopulation hybrids were close to the average of their parents. Crosses with low-performing foreign parents therefore resulted in reduced fitness of the hybrids compared to the local plants and dilution of local adaptation. We conclude that the introduction of maladapted populations from distant or ecologically distinct environments might, at least temporarily, decrease the fitness of neighboring local plants.  相似文献

The time course of mortality and the mean survival time of flour beetles dying after X-irradiation varied slightly in different strains and species. Within a given strain, however, both minimum and mean survival time were independent of dose over a wide range of exposures and independent of percent mortality. These findings suggest the operation of a single mode of death in irradiated beetles, in contrast to the “hierarchy of modes of death” recognized in irradiated mammals. Invasion of blood and tissues by enteric bacteria which gain entrance through the damaged intestinal lining, and subsequent spread of such infection, have been implicated in the lethal syndrome of irradiated mammals. The present investigation indicates that bacterial invasion does not contribute to the death of irradiated beetles. This conclusion is based on the lack of influence on survival of (1) administration of neomycin at levels which eliminated virtually all bacteria from the insects, (2) crowding or isolation, or (3) maintenance of irradiated beetles on medium in which other beetles previously had been raised. In addition, analysis of the distribution of deaths among a large number of vials each containing a small number of beetles disclosed no deviation from expectation based on random distribution; thus it seems unlikely that there is any “spread” of contagion within vials.  相似文献

Sepia (eyed) D. melanogaster females were allowed to enter bottle populations of wildtype D. melanogaster flies at rare, sporadic intervals. The frequency of sepia-eyed individuals in these populations was determined much more by selective forces than by numbers of immigrant individuals. Populations with no sepia individuals averaged nearly 3 immigrant individuals; those with more than 25% (homozygous) sepia flies averaged about 6 immigrants. After 34 generations, the average frequency of the sepia gene is about 0.28; this may represent the average frequency of any allele introduced into the wildtype populations by these migrant flies.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of population size and genetic relatedness on rates of pollen gene flow into experimental populations of the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible plant Raphanus sativus. We created synthetic populations of sizes 2, 5, 10, and 20 with three genetic structures (full siblings, half siblings, and unrelated plants). Following pollination in a natural setting, we conducted a simple paternity exclusion analysis using the allozyme genotypes of progeny to measure apparent gene flow and Monte Carlo simulations to estimate total gene flow. Estimates of apparent pollen gene flow rates ranged from 0 to 100% and were similar in rank to estimates of total gene flow. There were significant effects of population size and relatedness on the rate of apparent gene flow, and there were significant population size by relatedness interactions. Populations of size 2 had higher gene flow rates than larger populations, gene flow being negatively associated with the level of cross-compatibility (as measured by hand pollinations). Gene flow into populations of size 2 was also negatively associated with the distance to the nearest population of size 10 or 20. These results suggest that interactions among demography (population size), genetics (cross-compatibility), and ecology (pollinator behavior) are important influences on pollen gene flow rates into small plant populations.  相似文献

 We have established a technique for isolating, culturing and transforming tobacco zygotes. Zygotes were isolated by microdissection or enzymatic maceration from fertilized embryo sacs. Viable zygotes cocultured with mesophyll protoplasts underwent first division after 3 days of culture. Zygotes isolated by microdissection underwent a higher frequency of first division (61.2%) than those isolated by enzymatic maceration (30.5%). Globular embryos were formed only from microdissected zygotes, at a frequency of 8.7% after 1–2 weeks in culture. An efficient millicell device for the electroporation of DNA into zygotes was established. The electroporated zygotes divided in vitro at a frequency of 54.6% and developed into proembryos. Introduced GFP gene constructs showed transient expression in about 2.6% of the electroporated tobacco zygotes. The San Joaquin kit fox (Vulpes macrotis mutica) was once ubiquitous throughout Californias San Joaquin Valley and its surrounds. However, most of its habitat has been lost to irrigated agriculture, urban development, and oil fields. The remaining foxes are concentrated in six areas, although there are several small pockets of foxes throughout the Valley. To help conserve kit foxes, we sought an ecological understanding of the level of genetic variation remaining in these locations and the extent of gene flow among them. We collected tissue from 317 kit foxes from 8 sites and estimated genetic variability in and gene flow among sites using data from 8 polymorphic, microsatellite markers. We found no differences in both observed and expected heterozygosity between locations using Bonferonni corrected paired t-tests. We found differences in mean number of alleles per locus, even after we used Monte Carlo simulations to adjust for sample size differences. Population subdivision was low among sites (Fst=0.043), yet a matrix of pairwise Fst values was correlated with a matrix of pairwise geographic distances. An assignment test classified only 45% of the individuals to the site where they were captured. Overall, these data suggest that kit fox dispersal between locations may still maintain genetic variation throughout most of the areas we sampled.  相似文献

SUMMARY: The fundamental problem of gene selection via cDNA data is to identify which genes are differentially expressed across different kinds of tissue samples (e.g. normal and cancer). cDNA data contain large number of variables (genes) and usually the sample size is relatively small so the selection process can be unstable. Therefore, models which incorporate sparsity in terms of variables (genes) are desirable for this kind of problem. This paper proposes a two-level hierarchical Bayesian model for variable selection which assumes a prior that favors sparseness. We adopt a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based computation technique to simulate the parameters from the posteriors. A model for the conquest of a tree by bark beetles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A model for the interaction between attacking bark beetles and a tree is developed and discussed. It is shown that in addition to the more intuitive outcomes where the tree wins or the beetles win, it is also deduced that under certain conditions there may exist a stable coexistence (at least for some period of time) between the beetles and a living tree. Finally, it is demonstrated that the outcome of the tree-beetle interaction often depends on initial conditions such as the number of colonizing beetles.
These results are discussed with reference to empirical findings, as well as to the development of proper population dynamics models for bark beetles in a forest stand, and models developed for assisting forest managers in avoiding bark beetle outbreaks and for minimizing the damage caused by a bark beetle outbreak.  相似文献

Polymorphism of four enzymatic loci has been examined in 27 populations of Tetranychus urticae in relation to their geographical distribution and to two ecological parameters: open field vs. greenhouse habitats, and species of the colonized host plant. Genetic differentiation was significantly correlated to geographical distance in both types of habitat. Mite density and distribution of infested plants appear to be important factors for the population structure of T. urticae . In open field, T. urticae specimens from citrus trees were genetically more similar to other 'citrus' samples collected in different localities than they were from mites collected in the same locality on other plant species.  相似文献

Flow cytometry data of spinach thylakoid membrane preparations indicate the presence of a homogeneous thylakoid population. Fluorescence data from a flow cytometer and comparison with data from two other fluorometers show that chlorophyll a fluorescence detected with a flow cytometer has the character of maximum fluorescence (Fmax), not of the constant component (Fo). This conclusion is important since Fo measures fluorescence that is affected mostly by changes in excitation energy transfer and Fmax-Fo (the variable fluorescence) by changes in photochemistry. This was demonstrated by: 1) The light intensity as well as diffusion rate dependence of the quenching effect of various quinones (p-benzoquinone, phenyl-benzoquinone, and 2,5-dibromo-3-methyl-6-isopropyl-p-benzoquinone, DBMIB) on fluorescence yield; quenching for the same concentration of these quinones was lower at the higher than at the lower light intensities. 2) Temperature dependence of the fluorescence yield; increasing the temperature from 20 to 70 degrees C did not show an increase in fluorescence yield using a flow cytometer in contrast to measurements with weak excitation light, but similar to those obtained for Fmax. 3) Addition of an inhibitor diuron up to 100 microM did not change the fluorescence intensity. A comparison of quenching of fluorescence by various quinones obtained by flow cytometry with those by other fluorometers suggests that the high intensity used in the cytometry produces unique results: the rate of reduction of quinones in much larger than the rate of equilibration with the bulk quinones.  相似文献

The theory of tree water flow proposed in Aumann & Ford (submitted) is assessed by numerically solving the model developed from this theory under a variety of functional parameterizations. The unknown functions in this nonlinear partial differential equation model are determined using a tracheid-level model of water flow in a block of Douglas fir tracheids. The processes of flow, cavitation, pit aspiration/deaspiration, flow through the cell wall and ray exudation in a block of approximately 79 000 tracheids are modeled. Output from the tracheid model facilitates determination of the hydraulic conductivities in the sapwood as a function of saturation and interfacial area between liquid and gaseous phases of water, the function governing the rate of change in saturation, and the function governing the rate of change in interfacial area. The models show complementary things. The tracheid model shows that capacitance, or the change in saturation per change in pressure, is not constant. When all refilling is stopped, it takes over 180 days for the hydraulic conductivity in the vertical direction to reach 1/4 of its maximal value, showing the robustness of the transpiration stream for conducting water. The shape of the functions determined with the tracheid model change with different tracheid-level assumptions. When these functions are used in the differential equation model, it is shown that cell-wall conductivity plays an important part in the lag in flow observed in many conifers. The flow velocities and rates of change in saturation predicted by the differential equation model agree with those measured in Douglas fir. Both models support the theory of tree water flow presented in Aumann & Ford (submitted) and undermine the theory that water flow in trees is analogous to the flow of current in electric circuits.  相似文献

The negative binomial distribution model is reformulated and used to demarcate a host population at a specific level of infection by defining an attribute spanning a range of parasite aggregations. The upper limit of the range specifies the boundary for the classification of the host population and provides a technique to determine the cumulative probability at any level of parasite infection to a high degree of accuracy. This approach also leads to the evaluation of the k parameter, i.e. an inverse measure of dispersion of parasite aggregation, for each fraction of the host population with a discrete level of infection. The basic mathematical premise of the negative binomial function is unaltered in developing this reformulation which was applied to data on the distribution of the trichostrongylid nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus in populations of the field mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus.  相似文献

Studying the genetic structure of vicariant species (i.e., closely related species that occupy ecologically distinct yet adjacent habitats) can shed light on the evolution and divergence of species with different ecological requirements. A previous phylogeographic study identified chloroplast DNA haplotype sharing between two vicariant tree species, one from forest (Hymenaea courbaril) and one from savanna (H. stigonocarpa) habitats. These species co-occur in the Brazilian Cerrado, a biome that encompasses forest patches and riverine forests within a savanna matrix. In order to investigate the evolutionary processes involved in the genetic divergence of these trees, we used nuclear microsatellite markers, statistical methods including approximate Bayesian computation (ABC), and leaf morphology to analyze neighboring and distant populations. Bayesian analysis revealed admixture between the species. ABC analysis supported the scenarios with the occurrence of gene flow between species during the Last Glacial Maximum or from the Holocene to the present, when compared to alternative scenarios of no gene flow or constant gene flow since divergence. However, putative hybrids did not exhibit intermediate leaflet morphology, which could be related to distinct selective pressures maintaining species integrity even in the face of gene flow. Our results suggest that despite morphological differences between savanna and forest species, interspecific barriers to gene flow might not be fully developed between vicariant tree species and that interspecific hybridization in trees from Cerrado biome may be an underdiagnosed process.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Due in part to biophysical sized-related constraints, insects unlike vertebrates are seldom expected to act as primary seed dispersers via ingestion of fruits and seeds (endozoochory). The Mediterranean parasitic plant Cytinus hypocistis, however, possesses some characteristics that may facilitate endozoochory by beetles. By combining a long-term field study with experimental manipulation, we tested whether C. hypocistis seeds are endozoochorously dispersed by beetles.

Methods

Field studies were carried out over 4 years on six populations in southern Spain. We recorded the rate of natural fruit consumption by beetles, the extent of beetle movement, beetle behaviour and the relative importance of C. hypocistis fruits in beetle diet.

Key Results

The tenebrionid beetle Pimelia costata was an important disperser of C. hypocistis seeds, consuming up to 17·5 % of fruits per population. Forty-six per cent of beetles captured in the field consumed C. hypocistis fruits, with up to 31 seeds found in individual beetle frass. An assessment of seeds following passage through the gut of beetles indicated that seeds remained intact and viable and that the proportion of viable seeds from beetle frass was not significantly different from that of seeds collected directly from fruits.

Conclusions

A novel plant–animal interaction is revealed; endozoochory by beetles may facilitate the dispersal of viable seeds after passage through the gut away from the parent plant to potentially favourable underground sites offering a high probability of germination and establishment success. Such an ecological role has until now been attributed only to vertebrates. Future studies should consider more widely the putative role of fruit and seed ingestion by invertebrates as a dispersal mechanism, particularly for those plant species that possess small seeds.  相似文献

Single-strand conformation polymorphisms at 16S2 and COII mitochondrial genes were surveyed in 111 housefly samples from North, Central, and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Western Pacific. Forty-eight phenotypes were detected, of which none were ubiquitous, and 21 (44%) were confined to a single zoogeographical region. Nei's gene diversity index (H(S)) was 0.27 and was heterogeneous among zoogeographical regions. Phenotypes were the most diverse in the Ethiopian region and least diverse in the Palearctic and Nearctic regions. Hierarchical partitioning of the total diversity among regions (Nei's G(RT) = 0.49) indicated only a small proportion was shared. The differentiation of populations within regions (G(SR)) was 0.32. All pairwise estimates of gene flow between zoogeographical regions were less than 0.31 reproducing females per generation (mean 0.19). We conclude that housefly populations are highly structured even though the flies are mobile and easily capable of passive transport by ship and air.  相似文献

Numerous observations from recombinant systems have shown that properties such as the specific cell growth rate and the plasmid-free cell formation rate are related, not only to the average plasmid content per cell, but also to the plasmid distribution within a population. The plasmid distribution in recombinant cultures can have an effect on the culture productivity that cannot be modelled using average values of the overall culture. The prediction of the behaviour of a plasmid content distribution and its causes and effects can only be studied using segregated models. A segregated model that describes populations of recombinant cells characterized by their plasmid content distribution has been developed. This model includes critical causes of recombinant culture instability such as the plasmid partition mechanism at cell division, plasmid replication kinetics and the effect of the plasmid content on the specific growth rate. The segregated model allows investigation of the effect of each of these causes and that of the plasmid content distribution on the observable behaviour of a recombinant culture.The effect of two partitioning mechanisms (Gaussian distribution and binomial distribution) on culture stability was investigated. The Gaussian distribution is slightly more stable. A small plasmid replication rate constant results in a very unstable culture even after short periods of time. This instability is dramatically improved for a larger value of this constant, hence improving protein synthesis. For a very narrow initial plasmid distribution, a given plasmid replication rate and partitioning mechanism can become broad even after a relatively short period of time. In contrast, a very "broad" initial distribution gave rise to a "Gamma-like" distribution profile. If we compare the results obtained in the simulations of the segregated model with those of the non-segregated one (average model), the latter model predicts much more stable behaviour, thus these average models cannot predict culture instability with the same precision.When compared with the experimental results, the segregated model was able to predict the practical behaviour with accuracy even in a system with a high plasmid content per cell and a high rate of plasmid-free cell formation which could not be achieved with a non-segregated model.  相似文献
