The importance of marmosets for comparative and translational science has grown in recent years because of their relatively rapid development, birth cohorts of twins, family social structure, and genetic tractability. Despite this, they remain understudied in investigations of affective processes. In this methodological note, we establish the validity of using noninvasive commercially available equipment to record cardiac physiology and compute indices of autonomic nervous system activity—a major component of affective processes. Specifically, we recorded electrocardiogram and impedance cardiogram, from which we derived heart rate, respiration rate, measures of high‐frequency heart rate variability (indices of parasympathetic autonomic nervous system activity), and ventricular contractility (an index of sympathetic autonomic nervous system activity). Our methods produced physiologically plausible data, and further, animals with increased heart rates during testing were also more reactive to isolation from their social partner and presentation of novel objects, though no relationship was observed between reactivity and specific indices of parasympathetic or sympathetic nervous system activity.  相似文献

The substituted glucopyranose ring structure 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (CDEX) increases the solubility of molecules by inclusion of the agent in the lipophilic interior of the ring. This property is of particular use for the administration of molecules by the intracerebral (ICV) or intrathecal (IT) routes. In concentrations up to 40% w/v (isotonic), this agent (10 microliters) effect upon nociceptive or motor function after IT injection or on EEG and general behavior after ICV injection in rats. Using 20% CDEX, there is no change in the ED50 as compared to saline on the hot plate (HP) after IT injection of morphine, D-Ala2-D-Leu5 enkephalin or Tyr-Aib-Gly-gPhe-mAib-NH2, (Aib: alpha-aminoisobutyric acid) although there is an increase in their respective durations of effect. Cyclic peptide opioids: Tyr-c[D-A2bu-Gly-D-beta Nal(1)-D-Leu] (A2bu: alpha, gamma-diaminobutyric acid; beta-Nal(1): beta-naphthylalanine(1)) or Tyr-c[DA2bu-Gly-beta Nal(1)-D-Leu] are insoluble in saline but are readily dissolved in CDEX, and display a naloxone-sensitive antinociception following spinal administration. In other studies, saline insoluble capsaicin is administered in 25% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) or 20% CDEX (15 microliters; 5 mg/ml) which result in a significant reduction in the spinal levels of substance P and calcitonin gene related peptide and an increase in the HP latency. DMSO alone, but not CDEX alone, reduces the levels of the two peptides. These data emphasize the utility of complexation with CDEX for intracerebral drug delivery and compatibility with brain and spinal tissue.  相似文献

Tamarins and marmosets are small-bodied social callitrichines. Wild callitrichines feed on exudates, such as sap and gum; particularly, marmosets are mainly gummivores, while tamarins consume gums only occasionally and opportunistically. Zoo marmosets and tamarins are usually provided with gum arabic as an alternative to the exudates normally found in the wild. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a gum feeder on the behavior and well-being of four zoo-managed callitrichines. We studied four cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus), four red-handed tamarins (S. midas), two pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea), and three Geoffroy's marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) housed at Parco Natura Viva (Italy). We conducted the study over two different periods, a baseline (control, without the gum feeder) and then a gum feeder (when the gum feeder was provided) period. We used continuous focal animal sampling to collect behavioral data, including durations of social and individual behaviors. We collected 240 min of observations per period per study subject, with a total of 3,120 min for all the subjects in the same period and of 6,240 min in both periods. We analyzed data by using nonparametric statistical tests. First, we found that the gum feeder promoted species-specific behaviors, such as exploration, and diminished self-directed behaviors, suggesting an enriching effect on tamarin and marmoset behavior. Moreover, in red-handed tamarins, the provision of the gum feeder reduced the performance of self-directed and abnormal behavior, specifically coprophagy. These results confirm that gum feeders are effective foraging enrichment tools for zoo marmosets and tamarins.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the major advantage of trichromatic over dichromatic colour vision in primates is enhanced detection of red/yellow food items such as fruit against the dappled foliage of the forest. This hypothesis was tested by comparing the foraging ability of dichromatic and trichromatic Geoffroy's marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) for orange- and green-coloured cereal balls (Kix) in a naturalized captive setting. Trichromatic marmosets found a significantly greater number of orange, but not green, Kix than dichromatic marmosets when the food items were scattered on the floor of the cage (at a potential detection distance of up to 6 m from the animals). Under these conditions, trichromats but not dichromats found significantly more orange than green Kix, an effect that was also evident when separately examining the data from the end of the trials, when the least conspicuous Kix were left. In contrast, no significant differences among trichromats and dichromats were seen when the Kix were placed in trays among green wood shavings (detection distance < 0.5 m). These results support an advantage for trichromats in detecting orange-coloured food items against foliage, and also suggest that this advantage may be less important at shorter distances. If such a foraging advantage for trichromats is present in the wild it might be sufficient to maintain the colour vision polymorphism seen in the majority of New World monkeys.  相似文献

A high molecular weight fraction of gelatin precipitated from a solution of Difco gelatin with polyethylene glycol has several favourable properties in gel exclusion chromatography. To manufacture the gel exclusion agent, the gelatin was dissolved in hot water, allowed to set in the cold and rendered insoluble by reaction with formaldehyde. When finely disrupted and used as bed material in columns this gel is capable of separating protein components from mixtures of proteins of widely different molecular weights. Favourable properties include elasticity at relatively low concentration, its availability and its inexpensive nature.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine (1) the most effective method of administering vitamin K to infants to prevent hemorrhagic disease of the newborn (HDNB) and (2) the safest method, in light of preliminary evidence suggesting that intramuscular administration of vitamin K is associated with childhood cancer. DATA SOURCES: A MEDLINE search of articles published between Jan. 1, 1991, and Apr. 30, 1994, with the use of MeSH terms "hemorrhagic disease of the newborn", articles were limited to those involving human subjects, from birth to adolescence, and to articles from journals indexed through Index Medicus and written in English. References of all articles found through the initial search, the earliest of which was published in 1967, were also reviewed. STUDY SELECTION: Six controlled trials met the selection criteria: a minimum 4-week follow-up period, a minimum of 60 subjects and a comparison of oral and intramuscular administration or of regimens of single and multiple doses taken orally. All retrospective case reviews were evaluated. Because of its thoroughness, the authors selected a meta-analysis of almost all cases involving patients more than 7 days old published from 1967 to 1992. Only five studies that concerned safety were found, and all of these were reviewed. DATA EXTRACTION: In controlled trials, the risk of HDNB caused by vitamin K deficiency among infants receiving different regimens of vitamin K; in case studies, method of vitamin K administration and incidence of hemorrhagic disease; and in studies concerning safety, odds ratios and relative risks of childhood cancer following intramuscular administration of vitamin K. DATA SYNTHESIS: Vitamin K (1 mg, administered intramuscularly) is currently the most effective method of preventing HDNB. The previously reported relation between intramuscular administration of vitamin K and childhood cancer has not been substantiated. An oral regimen (three doses of 1 to 2 mg, the first given at the first feeding, the second at 2 to 4 weeks and the third at 8 weeks) may be an acceptable alternative but needs further testing in large clinical trials. CONCLUSION: There is no compelling evidence to alter the current practice of administering vitamin K intramuscularly to newborns.  相似文献

Mycobacterium bovis Bacille Calmette Guérin (BCG) was first administered to humans in 1921 and has subsequently been delivered to an estimated 3 billion individuals, with a low incidence of serious complications. The vaccine is immunogenic and is stable and cheap to produce. Additionally, the vaccine can be engineered to express foreign molecules in a functional form, and this has driven the development of BCG as a recombinant vector to protect against infectious diseases and malignancies such as cancer. However, it is now clear that the existing BCG vaccine has proved insufficient to control the spread of tuberculosis, and a major focus of tuberculosis vaccine development programs is the construction and testing of modified forms of BCG. This review summarizes the strategies employed to develop recombinant forms of BCG and describes the potential of these vaccines to stimulate protective immunity and protect against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.  相似文献

Twenty primiparous dairy sheep of the Mytilene breed, which were fed with a ration deficient in vitamin A and carotenes, were divided into 2 groups of 10 animals each after a 2-month adaptation period. The animals of group A were administered vitamin A palmitate by intramuscular injection (3500 IU/kg bodyweight), while the animals of group B were used as controls and received only the vehicle of the preparation without vitamin A. Serum vitamin A concentrations increased significantly in the animals of group A compared to the animals of group B (P < 0.01) from the first 24 h post-injection and remained significantly high for 8 days, and at 10 days post-injection they reached the pre-injection levels. The serum vitamin E concentration declined significantly (P < 0.05) in the animals of group A compared to the animals of group B for 8 days, when they reached the pre-injection levels. No changes in serum vitamins A and E levels in the animals of the 2 groups were observed 20 days after the injection of vitamin A.  相似文献

In this article, an experiential learning activity is described in which 19 university undergraduates made experimental observations on each other to explore physiological adaptations to high altitude. Following 2 wk of didactic sessions and baseline data collection at sea level, the group ascended to a research station at 12,500-ft elevation. Here, teams of three to four students measured the maximal rate of oxygen uptake, cognitive function, hand and foot volume changes, reticulocyte count and hematocrit, urinary pH and 24-h urine volume, athletic performance, and nocturnal blood oxygen saturation. Their data allowed the students to quantify the effect of altitude on the oxygen cascade and to demonstrate the following altitude-related changes: 1) impaired performance on selected cognitive function tests, 2) mild peripheral edema, 3) rapid reticulocytosis, 4) urinary alkalinization and diuresis, 5) impaired aerobic but not anaerobic exercise performance, 6) inverse relationship between blood oxygen saturation and resting heart rate, and 7) regular periodic nocturnal oxygen desaturation events accompanied by heart rate accelerations. The students learned and applied basic statistical techniques to analyze their data, and each team summarized its results in the format of a scientific paper. The students were uniformly enthusiastic about the use of self-directed experimentation to explore the physiology of altitude adaptation and felt that they learned more from this course format than a control group of students felt that they learned from a physiology course taught by the same instructor in the standard classroom/laboratory format.  相似文献

There are currently strong incentives for increased use of renewable fuels in the transport sector worldwide. However, some bioethanol and biodiesel production routes have limitations with regard to resource efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gases. More efficient biofuel systems are those based on lignocelluloses and novel conversion technologies. A complementary strategy to these is to increase the production of biogas from the digestion of organic residues and energy crops, or from byproducts of ethanol and biodiesel production. Compared with other biomass-based vehicle fuels available so far, biogas often has several advantages from an environmental and resource-efficiency perspective. This provides the motivation for further technological development aiming to reduce costs and thereby increased economic competitiveness of biogas as a vehicle fuel.  相似文献

Fallback foods have been defined as resources for which a species has evolved specific masticatory and digestive adaptations, and are consumed principally when preferred foods are scarce. In the present field investigation, we examine fungi, fruit, and exudate consumption in one group of Callimico goeldii in order to determine the importance of exudates as a fallback food for this species. Based on a total of 1,198 hr of quantitative behavioral data collected between mid-November 2002-August 2003, we found that pod exudates of Parkia velutina accounted for 19% of callimico feeding time in the dry season. This resource was not consumed in the wet season when fruits and fungi were the most common items in the diet. In the dry season of 2005 (July), the same callimico study group did not consume Parkia pod exudates. Instead, the group ate exudates obtained from holes gouged in tree trunks by pygmy marmosets and exudates resulting from natural weathering and insect damage on trunks, roots, and lianas. Pod exudates are reported to contain greater amounts of readily available energy than do trunk and root exudates, and were consumed throughout all periods of the day, particularly in the late afternoon. Trunk and root exudates were consumed principally in the morning. We propose that digestive adaptations of the hindgut, which enable callimicos to exploit fungi (a resource high in structural carbohydrates) year-round, predispose them to efficiently exploit and process exudates as fallback foods when other resources, such as ripe fruits, are scarce.  相似文献

Unlike many other species, golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) do not compensate for a loss in weight following a brief period of food deprivation: this may be due to their adaptation for a hoarding mode of life. We studied the interaction of hoarding with deprivation and a second challenge to body weight, increasing food costs. Hamsters earned all their food in operant chambers, in which they lived. The cost of food was varied by making it available on several different fixed ratio schedules. Regardless of whether the hoard was taken away each day (experiments 1 and 3) or left intact (experiments 2 and 4), food consumption was virtually constant as cost increased, but hoarding declined sharply. Hoarding was enhanced by a short deprivation period (experiment 3) especially when the subsequent cost of food was low (experiment 4). The results suggest that hamsters do indeed show compensatory behaviour following deprivation, or when the cost of foraging is high, but its form is different from that seen in non-hoarding species.  相似文献

The use of a puzzle-feeder, as feeding enrichment, was investigated in three families of captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). The study was carried out as a simultaneous choice test between two cages: one contained the puzzle-feeder, the other contained the usual food dishes, but otherwise both were arranged similarly. The monkeys were allowed to choose whether to feed from the usual dishes, or from the puzzle-feeder which required more effort. They were observed for two sessions in which they were differently motivated to feed. The enriched cage was always visited first, the marmosets managed to extract food from the puzzle-feeder, and spent more time eating from the puzzle-feeder when less hungry. These data contribute to a wider understanding on the use, and the effects, of feeding enrichments with different captive non-human primates.  相似文献
