OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance (AGUS) and the incidence of subsequent clinically significant lesions. STUDY DESIGN: A computer-based search of our cytology laboratory files was performed for cervicovaginal smears diagnosed as AGUS from January 1996 to December 1996. RESULTS: In 43,456 cervicovaginal smears examined during the 12-month period, AGUS was reported in 222 (0.5%) cases, with follow-up in 191 (86.0%) (133 [59.9%] biopsies and 58 [26.1%] repeat cervicovaginal smears). Among the patients with repeat cervicovaginal smears, 1 (1.7%) had a high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, and 10 (17.2%) had persistent AGUS/atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance; the remainder were within normal limits. Thirty-three (24.8%) patients had preneoplastic or neoplastic, squamous or glandular lesions on biopsy (8 [6.0%] cervical intraepithelial neoplasia [CIN] 1, 18 [13.5%] CIN 2/3 and 7 [5.3%] endometrial adenocarcinomas). Half the patients with CIN 2/3 also had evidence of endocervical gland involvement. Squamous lesions were seen more commonly in premenopausal women, while glandular lesions were noted predominantly in postmenopausal women. Patients with a prior abnormal gynecologic history or a concomitant diagnosis of squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) had a higher incidence of significant lesions on subsequent biopsy. CONCLUSION: Our incidence of AGUS was 0.5%, similar to that in other published reports. AGUS is associated with a significant number of squamous or glandular, premalignant or malignant lesions. A majority of these lesions are high grade SIL, often with endocervical gland involvement. A small but significant number of patients had a glandular malignancy. Our results justify close and persistent follow-up for patients with a diagnosis of AGUS on cervicovaginal smears.  相似文献

Objective:  To determine the role of cervical cytology and colposcopy in the management of endocervical neoplasia.
Setting:  Colposcopy unit and cytology laboratory in a teaching hospital.
Sample:  Group 1 included 184 smears showing endocervical glandular neoplasia from 129 patients and group 2 included 101 patients with histology showing endocervical abnormalities in a 6-year period (1993–1998). Follow-up of 6–11 years to 2004 was available.
Methods:  Group 1 were identified from the cytology computer records. Group 2 were identified from histology records on the cytology database and a record of histology cases kept for audit purposes. The clinical records were examined retrospectively.
Results:  The positive predictive value (PPV) of abnormal endocervical cells in smears was 81.1% for significant glandular/squamous [cervical glandular intraepithelial neoplasia (CGIN)/cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade2 (CIN2 or worse)] lesions. The PPV of colposcopy was 93.5% for significant glandular/squamous lesions of the cervix. The postcolposcopy probability of a significant lesion when colposcopy was normal was 87.5%. The sensitivity of colposcopy in detecting endocervical lesions was 9.8%. The sensitivity of cervical smears in detecting a significant endocervical abnormality (CGIN or worse) was 66.3%. The false negative rate for cytology of endocervical glandular lesions was 4.0%.
Conclusions:  Endocervical glandular neoplasia detected on cytology is predictive of significant cervical pathology even when colposcopy is normal, which supports excisional biopsy in the primary assessment of these smears. The high concomitant squamous abnormality rate justifies the use of colposcopy to direct biopsies from the ectocervix. Cervical cytology is the only current screening method for cervical glandular abnormalities but sensitivity is poor.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate histologic findings in patients aged 50 and older whose cervical smears revealed atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance (AGUS). STUDY DESIGN: Computerized records spanning a four-year period were retrospectively analyzed. Thirty patients over age 50 had cervical smears interpreted as AGUS and had follow-up biopsies within 12 months following the abnormal smear. The most important histologic diagnosis from the biopsy specimens was correlated with the subcategory of the cervical smear. RESULTS: Five smears interpreted as AGUS, favor reactive, revealed abnormal histology in four cases: three endometrial polyps and one squamous carcinoma. Two smears interpreted as AGUS, favor dysplasia, revealed squamous intraepithelial lesions on biopsy in both cases. Seventeen smears interpreted as AGUS, favor endometrial cells, revealed abnormal histology in 13 cases: 1 endocervical polyp, 6 endometrial polyps, 3 endometrial hyperplasias and 3 adenomyosis. Six patients with smears interpreted as AGUS, unclassifiable, revealed abnormal histology in five cases: two endocervical polyps, one endometrial polyp, one endometrial carcinoma and one ovarian carcinoma. CONCLUSION: The presence of AGUS in cervical smears from women over 50 was highly predictive of abnormal lesions detected by histologic examination. Although three cancers were detected on histologic follow-up, the most common lesions detected were endometrial polyps.  相似文献

Objective:  Large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) has become standard of care in the management of cervical squamous neoplasia and with cone biopsy glandular intraepithelial neoplasia. Controversy remains about the long-term effects of this traumatic procedure. The aim of this study was to count and compare the number of endocervical glandular cell groups in pre- and post-LLETZ cervical preparations using liquid-based cytology to establish a cyto-morphological correlate of destruction of the transformation zone.
Methods:  The cytology/histology correlation audit records of the Cytopathology Department of St Luke's Hospital in 2003 and early 2004 were used to select patients with a cytological diagnosis of high grade dyskaryosis followed by LLETZ. Only those cases with post-LLETZ cytological follow-up were selected. Cases using conventional smears were excluded. One hundred and twenty slides (60 pairs of slides) in total were retrieved. The cases underwent review and all groups of >3 glandular cells in each slide were counted by AM while blinded as to whether smears were pre- or post-LLETZ. Medians were compared using a Mann–Whitney U -test.
Results:  The median number of groups of endocervical glandular cells of the pre-treatment group was 5.5 and of the post-treatment group was 2.0. There were significantly fewer endocervical glandular cell groups in the post-LLETZ population ( P  = 0.03).
Conclusions:  The number of endocervical glandular groups in cervical cytological preparations decreases significantly following LLETZ procedure. This suggests that cytological follow-up may not be as useful in glandular neoplasia cases. Few or absent glandular cell groups in post-LLETZ preparations may have implications for adequacy assessment.  相似文献

Objective: To identify in cytology, high‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesions with endocervical glandular extension in cases previously diagnosed as atypical glandular cells (AGC), analyse possible reasons for the diagnostic pitfall and document the frequency of glandular pathology coexisting with high‐grade cervical intraepithelial lesion in histology. Methods: Thirty‐nine ThinPrep® cervical smear (Pap) tests reported as AGC of undetermined significance and showing high‐grade lesions on histology [cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2 or 3, endometrial or extrauterine adenocarcinoma] were reviewed retrospectively to identify the cases of high‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesion with endocervical glandular extension, using the Bethesda 2001 system. Cyto‐histological correlation was performed. Results: A high frequency of diverse glandular pathologies coexisted with high‐grade cervical intraepithelial lesions on histology. This included endocervical glandular extension in 63%, benign glandular pathology in 33% and pre‐neoplastic or malignant glandular pathology (endocervical glandular dysplasia, adenocarcinoma in situ and metastatic breast carcinoma) in 17% cases. On cytology, the sensitivity was 40%, specificity was 80% and positive predictive value was 86% for endocervical gland extension in high‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. Conclusions: Special efforts to recognize endocervical glandular extension in high‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and glandular neoplasia coexisting with squamous intraepithelial lesions from the heterogeneous category of AGC can contribute to increasing the diagnostic accuracy. The identification of endocervical glandular extension on cervical cytology would alert the gynaecologist to perform a thorough assessment of the endocervix during colposcopy. This could also help to decide on the need to perform deeper conization rather than loop electrosurgical excision procedure to ensure negative margins when colposcopic biopsy shows CIN 2 or 3.  相似文献

In 30 patients whose last cervical smear had lacked endocervical cells, two new samples were collected, one with a cotton-tipped applicator and the other with the recently developed Cytobrush cervical brush. With the cotton swab, no endocervical cells were present in the repeat smears of 21 patients, as compared with only 3 Cytobrush smears lacking endocervical cells; the difference is statistically significant (P less than .001). Quantitatively, the cellular yield with the Cytobrush was larger. It is concluded that the use of the cervical brush to collect material for cervical smears is more effective and provides a higher yield of cells than the use of the conventional cotton swab. The importance of the presence of endocervical cells in a smear as evidence that the transformation zone has been properly sampled is also discussed.  相似文献

Cytological aspects of uterine cervical adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma and combined adenocarcinoma-squamous carcinoma: appraisal of diagnostic criteria for in situ versus invasive lesions
This paper reports the cytological findings based on air-dried smears in a retrospective series of 143 cases of endocervical adenocarcinoma, combined adenocarcinoma-squamous carcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma drawn from the files of the BC Cancer Registry. Cervical cytology smears were available before biopsy in 131 patients, but in 18 cases the cytology showed no abnormality. Malignant changes or high-grade atypia of glandular and/or squamous cells (defined as moderate or severe dyskaryosis) were detected in 103 cases. In 46 cases, only a high-grade squamous abnormality was detected. Low-grade glandular and/or squamous lesions were detected in nine cases and one showed atypical endometrial-type glands. The cervical smears of 64 cases were reviewed in detail to determine the important cytomorphological criteria of in situ and invasive adenocarcinoma in air-dried smears, the technique used for preparing PAP smears in British Columbia. Endocervical cells were absent in four cases. Numerous (>10) groups of glandular cells were present in 51 cases. Important clues to the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma included crowding of nuclei, stratification of nuclei, loss of polarity, syncytial balls and papillary groups of glandular cells, nuclear enlargement, nuclear pleomorphism, and the presence of free-lying atypical glandular cells. Nuclear hyperchromatism, chromatin pattern, nuclear borders, nuclear membranes, and numbers and morphology of nucleoli were not helpful criteria in our material. Criteria enabling reliable distinction between in situ and invasive adenocarcinoma and/or mixed adenocarcinoma-squamous carcinoma could not be established.  相似文献

Cervex brush versus vaginal–cervical–endocervical (VCE) triple smear techniques in cervical sampling
Cervex brush sampling was compared with the conventional triple vaginal–cervical–endocervical (VCE) smear technique. Nine hundred and fifty‐nine Cervex brush smears and 1064 VCE smears were studied. All smears with both methods were technically satisfactory for evaluation. Endocervical cells were found in 90.7% and metaplastic cells in 73.3% of Cervex brush samples and in 92.5% and 64.1% of VCE samples, respectively. There were significantly more metaplastic cells in smears from premenopausal women. Low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) was found in three Cervex brush samples and in two VCE samples. High‐grade SIL was found only in one Cervex brush sample. Benign cellular changes were found in 142 Cervex brush samples and in 144 VCE samples. Sampling with the Cervex brush is efficient, simple and fast and gives high quality cervical smears for cytological evaluation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cytologic features of atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance (AGUS) smears following conization through a comparison with adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) smears. STUDY DESIGN: Fifty cervical smears, diagnosed as AGUS based on groups of crowded glandular cells that raised the possibility of AIS, from 38 patients who had conization and 24 AIS smears, histologically confirmed, from 17 patients were reviewed. Subsequent follow-up biopsies or hysterectomies in 38 patients were evaluated. RESULTS: Nuclear atypia was a more reliable feature than architectural structure in differentiating postcone effect from AIS on cytology. The predominant cytologic features of the postcone smears were crowded glandular cells with a high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio and relatively small, hyperchromatic nuclei with rather finely granular and uniformly dispersed chromatin, less distinct nuclear membranes, less frequent mitosis and presence of endometrial-type stromal cells in the background. The architecture of the crowded cells in the postcone smears was sometimes similar to that of AIS. No AIS or high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion histology was encountered in follow-up biopsies or hysterectomy specimens. CONCLUSION: The cytologic features distinguishing AGUS from AIS may be helpful in identifying the postcone effect. Since it is important to avoid miscalling the postcone effect as AIS, it is recommended that one check for a previous history of a cone biopsy.  相似文献

The prevalence of endocervical adenocarcinoma and its precursors has increased, in part due to increased diagnostic awareness of these lesions. To date, limited information has been published regarding the predictive value of glandular abnormalities in cervical smears. This study details the histological follow up of 418 cervical smears showing glandular abnormality, reported in our department over a six year period from 1993 to 1998. Histological follow up was available for 395 of the 418 smears (94.50%). The overall positive predictive value (PPV) for this group of smears was 72.66% for either significant glandular or squamous pathology (at least low grade cervical glandular intraepithelial neoplasia or CIN2 on follow up biopsy), and 55.70% for significant glandular pathology alone. Examination of subcategories of abnormal glandular smear showed that the PPV increased with the degree of abnormality reported within the smears.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Hyperplastic mesonephric remnants are an incidental finding in occasional uterine or cervical surgical specimens. We describe three cases in which such remnants were postulated to be the source of abnormal glandular cells in cervical smears. CASES: In all three cases abnormal glandular cells were seen in cervical smears. Subsequent histology showed the presence of hyperplastic mesonephric remnants that communicated with the endocervical canal and were likely to be the source of the abnormal glandular cells. We believe that the key features of these cells, which may aid their distinction from other causes of glandular abnormalities, are their loose clustering, lack of significant anisocytosis and cuboidal outlines. CONCLUSION: We aim to document mesonephric hyperplasia as a possible source for abnormal glandular cells in cervical smears.  相似文献

A case-control analysis of the endocervical status of smears that preceded a histologic diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) showed that smears which correctly predicted CIN were significantly more likely to include metaplastic cells than were smears reported to be negative. There was no significant difference between the smears with respect to the presence of columnar cells. A high level of agreement was apparent between scientists in determining both columnar and metaplastic cell status. A discussion of the definition, role and potential impact of endocervical status in the prevention of cervical cancer is presented.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare, with a retrospective study, endocervical and metaplastic cell number to identify the cytology of squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) of the cervix. STUDY DESIGN: Cytology files from March 2000 to March 2003 were reevaluated, and those with SIL were identified. RESULTS: In 8,743 cervicovaginal smears were found 70 (0.8%) SIL smears (39 low grade, 31 high grade) and 140 randomly selected smears without squamous or glandular abnormalities that were not atrophic or unsatisfactory. Endocervical and metaplastic cells counted in these smears and then classified into 5 groups were compared with each other. CONCLUSION: Women with smears containing endocervical cells are not at greater risk for SIL than those with smears lacking these cells. Women with smears containing metaplastic cells are more likely to have SIL than those without metaplastic cells. In addition, high grade lesions are more likely in smears containing more metaplastic cells.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate incidence, cytology findings and pathology outcome of atypical glandular cells (AGC) in Pap smears according to the 2001 Bethesda criteria. STUDY DESIGN: From 103,073 consecutive Pap smears, 113 (0.1%) AGC cases were identified. Of these, 91 (80%) had adequate histologic evaluation included in this study. RESULTS: Abnormal histology findings were seen in 38 patients (42%). Final pathology results revealed 14 endometrial adenocarcinomas, 5 endocervical adenocarcinomas, 1 cervical squamous cell carcinoma, 1 endometrial stromal sarcoma, 6 other malignancies, 4 endocervical adenocarcinomas in situ, 4 cases ofendometrial complex byperplasia, 1 case of endocervical glandular dysplasia and 2 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 3 with glandular involvement. Women with AGC, favor neoplasia, were more likely to have significant pathology than those with AGC, not otherwise specified, 74% vs. 33% (p = 0.002). Some characteristic background cytologic findings were also noticed in most cases of endometrial, fallopian tube and endocervical adenocarcinoma. CONCLUSION: A diagnosis of AGC is more clinically significant by the 2001 Bethesda System, especially the "AGC, favor neoplastic" category. Some background cytologic features are important because they are indicators of malignancy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify cytomorphologic features specific to microglandular hyperplasia (MGH) in cervical cytologic smears. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-four cervical smears from 24 patients obtained before the histologic diagnosis of MGH made on colposcopically directed biopsies during a period of two years (1995-1997) were evaluated. RESULTS: Of cases with MGH, 13/24 (54%) showed the presence of bidimensional or tridimensional cellular clusters made up of cubic or cylindrical glandular cells with vacuolated cytoplasm; cells with dense cytoplasm, basaloid in appearance, corresponding to immature squamous metaplasia; and subcylindrical reserve cells with small, round nuclei and scant cytoplasm. Clusters showed microlumina or fenestrated spaces, preserved polarity and absence of nuclear peripheral dispersion. In the control group these cellular clusters were found in 6/100 (6%). Statistical analysis (chi 2) showed a strong, highly significant association (P < 0.001) of the cytologic parameters selected and the histologic diagnosis of MGH. CONCLUSION: Until now, no specific cytologic parameters were described for MGH. This study underscored the value of cytomorphologic parameters described for typical cellular clusters showing microlumina or fenestrated spaces with shared party walls and an admixture of glandular cells, and immature squamous metaplastic and subcylindrical reserve cells in the cytologic diagnosis of MGH.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To review the histologic findings in patients diagnosed with "atypical glandular cells of uncertain significance, endocervical cell type" (AGUS-EC) by ThinPrep Pap Test (TPPT) or conventional Pap smear (CPS) and to evaluate the clinical value of subclassifying AGUS-EC as "favor reactive" or "favor neoplastic." STUDY DESIGN: All TPPT and CPS diagnosed as AGUS-EC (favor reactive, unspecified and favor neoplastic) from January 1998 through December 1999 and all available histologic follow-up (defined as endocervical curettage, cervical biopsy, cervical conization or hysterectomy obtained within six months of the time of an AGUS-EC diagnosis) were obtained from a computerized database. RESULTS: AGUS-EC was diagnosed in 0.77% of CPS (683 of 88,825) and 0.59% of TPPT (183 of 30,968) (P = NS). There was no statistically significant difference in any of the follow-up histologic diagnoses between the CPS and TPPT groups. The majority of the follow-up biopsies demonstrated benign processes in both groups. Patients with a diagnosis of AGUS-EC "favor neoplastic" had a greater proportion of true glandular pathology as compared with AGUS-EC "unspecified" or "favor reactive" (P < .001). None of the patients with a diagnosis of AGUS-EC "favor reactive" were found to have true glandular pathology; however, a minority of them proved to have squamous pathology. CONCLUSION: In this study there was no difference in CPS and TPPT in regard to the specificity of a diagnosis of AGUS-EC for true glandular pathology. Subclassifying AGUS-EC as "favor reactive" or "favor neoplastic" may provide valuable information for directing patient follow-up.  相似文献

Intraobserver and interobserver variability in assessing the quality of cervical smears, as measured by the presence or absence of endocervical columnar cells and squamous metaplastic cells, was evaluated. In total, 180 cervical smears representing the most important cytologic diagnoses were anonymously rescreened twice by 19 observers with an interval of six months. An absence of endocervical columnar cells was proven to correlate with a high percentage of false-negative diagnoses. Intraobserver agreement on the presence or absence of endocervical columnar cells was 85.7% between the two screenings. A predictive value of 57.7% was found for a negative scoring (absence of these cells) while the predictive value of a positive scoring (presence of endocervical cells) was 87.3%. Of the observer scorings, 83.9% concurred with the final diagnosis; there was no significant correlation between that concurrence and the number of years of experience in cytopathology of the observer. For squamous and squamous metaplastic cells in the cervical smear the predictive value of a negative scoring (absence) was only 20.6%. Compared to the final diagnosis, 69.5% of these scorings matched. A significant and relatively high correlation with the experience of the observer was found for the scoring for the presence of metaplastic cells. Even though the predictive values of these quality scorings were relatively low a significantly higher risk for false diagnoses was established when negative scorings were given. It is therefore advisable to have smears with negative scorings for endocervical columnar cells and squamous metaplastic cells always rescreened by another observer.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of endocervical adenocarcinoma has increased steadily over the past two decades. Since the Bethesda System was introduced, the diagnosis of atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance (AGUS) has also risen and now accounts for 0.46-1.83% of all cervical (Pap) smears. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the significance of a diagnosis of AGUS using cytohistologic correlation. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of archival material from 1993 through 1996 identified 64 patients who had smears diagnosed as AGUS and had a subsequent surgical biopsy. The smears were reviewed and cytologic features analyzed and correlated with the histologic diagnosis. RESULTS: On biopsy, 3 (5%) of the 64 cases showed endocervical adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) (1 case with invasive adenocarcinoma also), 14 (22%) had a benign glandular lesion (endocervical polyp, tubal metaplasia, microglandular hyperplasia, reactive changes), 35 (54%) had squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) (15 diagnosed on the original smear), and 12 (19%) had no abnormality. Among the cytologic criteria evaluated, feathering (P = .01), palisading (P < .001) and chromatin clearing (P = .002) were shown to have a significant association with the histopathologic diagnosis of AIS/adenocarcinoma. These features were also useful in distinguishing AIS/adenocarcinoma from SIL and benign glandular changes from AIS/adenocarcinoma but not benign/reactive glandular changes from SIL. CONCLUSION: A diagnosis of AGUS correlated with a clinically significant lesion in the majority of cases. Squamous dysplasia (SIL) was the most common lesion identified. The presence of feathering, nuclear palisading and chromatin clearing increased the likelihood of a histologic diagnosis of AIS/adenocarcinoma.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: In the current study, we explore the diagnostic parameters and pitfalls in the follow-up of 123 cases of Pap smears diagnosed as high-grade atypical squamous cells (ASC-H) at our institution. STUDY DESIGN: A computer database search was performed from the archives of the Ottawa Hospital Cytopathology Service for cases diagnosed with ASC-H between January 2003 and July 2005. RESULTS: Follow-up of the 123 cases of ASC-H showed high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) in 73 patients (59.4%), low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) in 11 (8.9%), immature squamous metaplasia in 23 (18.7%), reactive squamous cell changes in 12 (9.8%), benign glandular lesions (endocervical atypia, degenerated glandular cells) in 2 (1.6%) and atrophy in 2 (1.6%). In our study, 83 patients were younger than 40 years (67.4%), with biopsy-proven HSIL found in 54 patients (65.1%). The remaining 40 patients (32.6%) were older than 40 years of age, and follow-up biopsies showed HSIL in 19 patients (47.5%). CONCLUSION: In our study, 59.4% of the cases that were diagnosed cytologically as ASC-H were found to have HSIL on subsequent biopsies. This correlation was stronger in patients below the age of 40 years (65.1% vs. 47.5%). The cytopathologic feature most strongly associated with HSIL was the presence of coarse nuclear chromatin (84%).  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the utility of indigenously prepared cell blocks (CBs) as an adjunct to a conventional smear test in providing a reliable diagnosis of clinically suspicious cervical cancer in resource-limited settings. METHODS: Eighty-six clinically suspicious cervical cancer cases underwent a conventional smear test, CB preparation from residual cellular samples and biopsies at the same sitting. Correlations were performed between these modalities in order to derive the sensitivity and specificity of the CB technique to diagnose cervical cancer. OBSERVATION & RESULTS: Out of 86 clinically suspicious cervical cancers, 72 (83.7%), 70 (81.4%) and 67 (77.9%) cases were diagnosed as malignant on tissue biopsies, CBs and smears respectively. CB-biopsy agreement in the diagnosis of malignancy was feasible in 87.5% of the cases while CB-Pap smear agreement was feasible in 92.5% of the cases. Sensitivity and specificity of CB preparation to diagnose malignancy was 92.5% and 100%, respectively, when the smear was taken as the reference test (excluding the unsatisfactory smears). When biopsy was taken as the gold standard, the sensitivity and specificity of CBs were 87.5% and 100% respectively (excluding the unsatisfactory biopsies). In 8/19 cases where the smear diagnoses were either unsatisfactory or atypical squamous cells/atypical glandular cells, CBs picked up malignant lesions. CONCLUSION: CBs prepared from the residual cellular sample of conventional cervical scrapes augment the sensitivity of the smear test. When used as an adjunct to the smear, CBs aid in providing a reliable diagnosis of cervical cancer in the majority of the clinically suspected cases and thus the biopsy load can be reduced significantly in resource-poor settings.  相似文献
