Flux density and spectral measurements were carried out on magnetic fields generated by several types of motor-driven personal appliances used near the body. Among the units tested were several for which the average flux densities, as determined at the surfaces of the appliance, exceeded 0.4 mT. Time-rates-of-change (dB/dt) for several units exceeded 1000 T/s, and several units exhibited high-frequency components in the low-MHz range. Use of such appliances, although normally of short duration, can represent exposure to magnetic fields of relatively high flux density, which may also have high-frequency components. Compared to other household and commercial sources of magnetic fields, those generated by certain motor-driven personal appliances may represent a significant contribution to time-weighted average exposure and may represent an important source of local induced currents in the body. Furthermore, high-frequency transients that represent only a minor contribution to time-weighted average exposure may generate significant instantaneous induced currents. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

We have previously reported that environmental-level magnetic fields (1.2 μT [12 milligauss], 60 Hz) block the growth inhibition of the hormone melatonin (10−9 M) on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells in vitro. We now report that the same 1.2 μT, 60 Hz magnetic fields significantly block the growth inhibitory action of pharmacological levels of tamoxifen (10−7 M). In biophysical studies we have taken advantage of Faraday's Law of Current Induction and tested whether the 1.2 μT magnetic field or the associated induced electric field is responsible for this field effect on melatonin and tamoxifen. We observe that the magnetic field component is associated with the field blocking effect on melatonin and tamoxifen function. To our knowledge the tamoxifen studies represent the first experimental evidence for an environmental-level magnetic field modification of drug interaction with human breast cancer cells. Together, these findings provide support to the theory that environmental-level magnetic fields can act to modify the action of a drug or hormone on regulation of cell proliferation. Melatonin and tamoxifen may act through different biological pathways to down-regulate cell growth, and further studies are required to identify a specific biological site of interaction for the 1.2 μT magnetic field. To explore possible biochemical mechanisms whereby electromagnetic fields of around 0.1 mT might affect immune cells or developing cancer cells, we studied intracellular calcium signaling in the model system Jurkat E6-1 human T-leukemia cells during and following exposure to a 60 Hz magnetic field. Cells were labeled with the intracellular calcium-sensitive fluorescent dye Fluo-3, stimulated with a monoclonal antibody against the cell surface structure CD3 (associated with ligand-stimulated T-cell activation), and analyzed on a FACScan flow-cytometer for increases in intensity of emissions in the range of 515–545 nm. Cells were exposed during or before calcium signal-stimulation to 0.15 mTrms 60 Hz magnetic field. The total DC magnetic field of 78.2 μT was aligned 17.5° off the vertical axis. Experiments used both cells cultured at optimal conditions at 37 °C and cells grown under suboptimal conditions of 24 °C, lowered external calcium, or lowered anti-CD3 concentration. These experiments demonstrate that intracellular signaling in Jurkat E6-1 was not affected by a 60 Hz magnetic field when culture and calcium signal-stimulation were optimal or suboptimal. These results do not exclude field-induced calcium-related effects further down the calcium signaling pathway, such as on calmodulin or other calcium-sensitive enzymes. The phenomenon of magnetic flux breakthrough into a wire array during its implosion was studied experimentally at the Angara-5-1 facility. It is shown that breakthroughs develop in the final stage of plasma production from the wire material and occur near the initial wire position. The spatial distributions of the azimuthal magnetic field within tungsten, molybdenum, copper, and aluminum wire arrays were studied using magnetic probes. The distributions of the azimuthal magnetic field B φ(z, t) along the array height in different stages of implosion were measured, and the characteristic dimensions of regions with a nonuniform magnetic field that appear during magnetic flux breakthroughs at the outer boundary of the wire array plasma were determined. The dimensions of these regions are compared with those of the regions with depressed plasma radiation observed in frame and time-integrated X-ray images. The dynamics of the distribution B φ(z, t) in regions with a nonuniform magnetic field during breakthroughs of the azimuthal magnetic flux is compared with that of the spatial distribution of pinch radiation in the frame X-ray images in different stages of implosion. The experimental data on the characteristics of spatially nonuniform breakthroughs of the magnetic flux into the wire array are analyzed using the plasma rainstorm model proposed by V.V. Aleksandrov et al. (JETP 97, 745 (2003)). The plasma density in the region of magnetic flux breakthrough is estimated.  相似文献

A partial cDNA clone for the 48,000 dalton yolk polypeptide gene from Anastrepha suspensa was isolated from a cDNA expression library using a yolk polypeptide antibody probe and hybridization to the Drosophila melanogaster yolk protein 1 gene. The sequenced DNA has greatest homology to the yolk protein genes from Ceratitis capitata, D. Melanogaster, and Calliphora erythrocephala and, similar to these genes, shares amino acid sequence domains with those from lipases. RNA hybridization studies indicated that the yolk protein gene expression is completely female-specific and limited to the ovaries, without apparent regulation by 20-hydroxyecdysone or juvenile hormone. This is in contrast to an earlier study which suggested, based on immunological probes, that a very low level of yolk protein synthesis occurred in fat body and was not sex-specific. Arch. There are conflicting reports on the accuracy of the thermal dissipation probe (TDP, the Granier method) measurement using the original formula, which is widely used to estimate the transpiration of individual trees and forest stands. In this article, six woody species of three wood types were used to study a possible association between TDP measurement accuracy and wood anatomical characteristics, including the vessel diameter and density, as well as sapwood depth. We found that TDP technique with Granier’s original equation underestimated the sap flux density in six species to various degrees, dependent on conduit size and sap flux. Our calibration using two conifers with small diameters and a high density of tracheids was relatively consistent with Granier’s calibration; however, because there were larger diameters and lower densities of vessels in the two diffuse-porous species, the original calibration significantly underestimated sap flow. Two ring-porous species had the largest diameters and lowest densities of vessels. In particular, Robinia pseudoacacia possessed the shallowest sap wood depth, less than a probe length. Our calibration for the ring-porous species, especially R. pseudoacacia, deviated far from the original calibration, which mostly underestimated the sap flow. The degree of underestimation was well associated with sap wood depth and the radial diameter and density distribution of conduits. Our results demonstrated that a new calibration must be operated for each species together with the sapwood depth determination and more probes may be applied for one stem in the field to obtain the more accurate sap flux. In addition, we investigated the effects of different environmental temperature and perfusing fluid composition on the TDP-based sap flux measurement. We found that an environmental temperature reduction from 25 to 0 °C did not alter the values of the maximum temperature difference (ΔTm) between a heated probe and a reference probe when there was no sap flow, verifying that ΔTm measured at night can be used as a reference in daytime.  相似文献

Knowledge of amino acid composition, alone, is verified here to be sufficient for recognizing the structural class, α, β, α+β, or α/β of a given protein with an accuracy of 81%. This is supported by results from exhaustive enumerations of all conformations for all sequences of simple, compact lattice models consisting of two types (hydrophobic and polar) of residues. Different compositions exhibit strong affinities for certain folds. Within the limits of validity of the lattice models, two factors appear to determine the choice of particular folds: 1) the coordination numbers of individual sites and 2) the size and geometry of non-bonded clusters. These two properties, collectively termed the distribution of non-bonded contacts, are quantitatively assessed by an eigenvalue analysis of the so-called Kirchhoff or adjacency matrices obtained by considering the non-bonded interactions on a lattice. The analysis permits the identification of conformations that possess the same distribution of non-bonded contacts. Furthermore, some distributions of non-bonded contacts are favored entropically, due to their high degeneracies. Thus, a competition between enthalpic and entropic effects is effective in determining the choice of a distribution for a given composition. Based on these findings, an analysis of non-bonded contacts in protein structures was made. The analysis shows that proteins belonging to the four distinct folding classes exhibit significant differences in their distributions of non-bonded contacts, which more directly explains the success in predicting structural class from amino acid composition. Debye and Waller showed how to adjust scattering intensities in diffraction experiments for harmonic motions of atoms about an average, static reference configuration. However, many motions, particularly in biological molecules as compared to simple crystals, are far from harmonic. We show how, using a variety of simple anharmonic, multiconformational models, it is possible to construct a variety of Generalized Debye-Waller Factors, and understand their meaning. A central result for these cases is that, in principle, intensity factors cannot be obtained from true total mean square displacements of the atoms. We make the distinction between the intensity factors for unimodal quasiharmonic motions and those for the anharmonic, multimodal (valley hopping) motions. Only the former affect the conventional B factors. Proteins 29:153–160, 1997. Published 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The influence of a transverse magnetic field on the characteristics of the positive column of a planar low-pressure discharge is studied theoretically. The motion of magnetized electrons is described in the framework of a continuous-medium model, while the ion motion in the ambipolar electric field is described by means of a kinetic equation. Using mathematical transformations, the problem is reduced to a secondorder ordinary differential equation, from which the spatial distribution of the potential is found in an analytic form. The spatial distributions of the plasma density, mean plasma velocity, and electric potential are calculated, the ion velocity distribution function at the plasma boundary is found, and the electron energy as a function of the magnetic field is determined. It is shown that, as the magnetic field rises, the electron energy increases, the distributions of the plasma density and mean plasma velocity become asymmetric, the maximum of the plasma density is displaced in the direction of the Ampère force, and the ion flux in this direction becomes substantially larger than the counter-directed ion flux.  相似文献

Changes in the distribution of flowing erythrocytes in a straight cylinder were studied under an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The magnetic field was applied perpendicular to a cylinder, which had a 90° side vessel at the end (oriented towards the magnetic field) to detect changes in the erythrocyte distribution within the cylinder. (1) The attraction of paramagnetic erythrocytes by the magnetic field was demonstrated by an increase in the concentration (or number) of erythrocytes drawn into the side vessel. The flow of diamagnetic, oxygenated erythrocytes was unaffected. (2) The degree of attraction of the paramagnetic erythrocytes was proportional to ``(magnetic susceptibility)' and to ``(magnetic flux density) × (magnetic field gradient)' up to 10 T2/m, but it saturated at high magnetic field. The onset of the saturation depended on the magnetic susceptibility of the erythrocytes. (3) The degree of attraction depended on the hematocrit of the flowing erythrocyte suspension, with a maximum value at a low hematocrit. These phenomena are explained on the basis of the balance between the paramagnetic attractive force of the magnetic field and the collision rate between erythrocytes. We have plotted data from a number of studies on the range of radiofrequency (RF) field levels associated with a variety of environmental and occupational sources. Field intensity is shown in units of volts/meter (V/m) for electric field strength and amps/meter (A/m) for magnetic field strength. Duty factors, modulation frequencies, and modulation indices are also reported for some sources. This paper is organized into seven sections, each cataloging sources into appropriate RF frequency bands from very-low frequency (VLF) to super-high frequency (SHF), and covers frequencies from 10 kHz to 30 GHz. Sources included in this summary are the following: Coast Guard navigational transmitters, a Navy VLF transmitter, computer visual display terminals (VDTs), induction stoves or range tops, industrial induction and dielectric heaters, radio and television broadcast transmitters, amateur and citizens band (CB) transmitters, medical diathermy and electrosurgical units, mobile and handheld transmitters, cordless and cellular telephones, microwave ovens, microwave terrestrial relay and satellite uplinks, and police, air traffic, and aircraft onboard radars. For the sources included in this summary, the strongest fields are found near industrial induction and dielectric heaters, and close to the radiating elements or transmitter leads of high power antenna systems. Handheld transmitters can produce near fields of about 500 V/m at the antenna. Fields in the general urban environment are principally associated with radio and TV broadcast services and measure about 0.1 V/m root-mean-square (rms). Peak fields from air traffic radars sampled in one urban environment were about 10 V/m, 300 times greater than the rms value of 0.03 V/m when the duty factor associated with antenna rotation and pulsing are factored in. A peptide (Lymantria TE) was isolated from brains of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, which stimulates synthesis of ecdysteroid in the testes of larval and pupal insects. This ecdysiotropic peptide was purified and its structure determined to be NH2-IIe-Ser-Asp-Phe-Asp-Glu-Tyr-Glu-Pro-Leu-Asn-Asp-Ala-Asp-Asn-Asn-Glu-Val-Leu-Asp-Phe-OH using protein sequence analysis and electrospray mass spectrometry. The peptide was biphasic in activity, with maximal activity in the pupal testes at 10−13 M and 10−9 M, with a minimum at 10−10 M, and with maxima at 10−15 M and 10−10 M and minimum at 10−13 M for larval testes. A study was carried out in 1990 to guide the development of a protocol for assessing residential exposures of children to time-weighted-average (TWA) power-frequency magnetic fields. The principal goal of this dosimetry study was to determine whether area (i.e., spot and/or 24 h) measurements of power-frequency magnetic fields in the residences and in the schools and daycare centers of 29 children (4 months through 8 years of age) could be used to predict their measured personal 24-h exposures. TWA personal exposures, measured with AMEX-3D meters worn by subjects, were approximately log-normally distributed with both residential and nonresidential geometric means of 0.10 μT (1.0 mG). Between-subjects variability in residential personal exposure levels (geometric standard deviation of 2.4) was substantially greater than that observed for nonresidential personal exposure levels (1.4). The correlation between log-transformed residential and total personal exposure levels was 0.97. Time-weighted averages of the magnetic fields measured in children's bedrooms, family rooms, living rooms, and kitchens were highly correlated with residential personal exposure levels (r = 0.90). In general, magnetic field levels measured in schools and daycare centers attended by subjects were smaller and less variable than measured residential fields and were only weakly correlated with measured nonresidential personal exposures. The final measurement protocol, which will be used in a large US study examining the relationship between childhood leukemia and exposure to magnetic fields, contains the following elements: normal- and low-power spot magnetic field measurements in bedrooms occupied by subjects during the 5 years prior to the date of diagnosis for cases or the corresponding date for controls; spot measurements under normal and low power-usage conditions at the centers of the kitchen and the family room; 24-h magnetic-field recordings near subjects' beds; and wire coding using the Wertheimer-Leeper method. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The avian brain undergoes naturally occurring cell death and neuronal replacement in adulthood. Little is known about how neuron survival in adult birds is regulated. However, previous work suggests that this process is open to environmental control. We now report that a reduction in day length from springlike to fall-like conditions can dramatically increase cell death in adult male canaries. Many of the dying cells are projection neurons in the motor pathway controlling song learning and production. Circulating levels of gonadal steroids were not correlated with photoperiod-induced changes in the magnitude of cell death. Our results suggest that neuronal death in adult male canaries is regulated by seasonal changes in photoperiod, and that this occurs independent of chronic changes in gonadal steroid hormone levels. Day length may serve as a predictive environmental cue to time cell death in accordance with seasonal reproduction. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Neurobiol 33: 223–231, 1997

Exposure systems that provide good magnetic field uniformity, minimum stray fields, and minimal heating, vibration, and hum, as well as capability for true sham exposure in which current flows in the coils, are needed to determine rigorously the biological effects of weak magnetic fields. Designs based on acrylic polymer coil support structures and twisted pair bifilary coil windings were employed to fabricate several different systems for the exposure of laboratory animals and cell cultures to magnetic fields. These systems exhibit excellent performance characteristics in terms of exposure field uniformity, stray field containment, and exposure field cancellation in the sham exposure mode. A custom-written computer program was used to determine the best arrangement for coils with regard to field uniformity in the exposure volume and stray field containment. For in vivo exposures, modules were made up of four Merritt four-coil sets, built into a single structure and positioned to form an octapole with fields directed in the horizontal plane. For in vitro applications, two different coil configurations were selected to produce the vertical fields required. A quadrupole system, comprising modules consisting of two Merritt four-coil sets arranged side by side to limit stray fields, was built as a prototype. In the second configuration, one Merritt four-coil set was positioned inside the other to form a concentric coil set. In both in vitro systems, exposure chambers were connected to remote commercial incubators in order to reduce ambient magnetic fields in the exposure volume. An active field cancellation circuit was developed for reducing ambient AC magnetic fields in the in vitro sham exposure chamber, when necessary. These design and fabrication approaches provide systems that offer uniform field exposures and excellent stray field containment when needed and are portable, washable, and relatively inexpensive. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Stem WC may decline during the day. Zero-flow dT m increases when WC decreases. Use of nighttime dT m in the calculation of sap flux density during the day might introduce errors.

    Abstract

There is increasing evidence of diel variation in water content of stems of living trees as a result of changes in internal water reserves. The interplay between dynamic water storage and sap flow is of current interest, but the accuracy of measurement of both variables has come into question. Fluctuations in stem water content may induce inaccuracy in thermal-based measurements of sap flux density because wood thermal properties are dependent on water content. The most widely used thermal method for measuring sap flux density is the thermal dissipation probe (TDP) with continuous heating, which measures the influence of moving sap on the temperature difference between a heated needle and a reference needle vertically separated in the flow stream. The objective of our study was to investigate how diel fluctuations in water content could influence TDP measurements of sap flux density. We analysed the influence of water content on the zero-flow maximum temperature difference, dT m, which is used as the reference for calculating sap flux density, and present results of a dehydration experiment on cut branch segments of American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.). We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that dT m increases when stem water content declines. Because dT m is measured at night when water content is high, this phenomenon could result in underestimations of sap flux density during the day when water content is lower. We conclude that diel dynamics in water content should be considered when TDP is used to measure sap flow.  相似文献

The spatial distributions of the magnetic field, plasma density, and current at distances of (20–400)RS from the Sun (where RS is the solar radius) are investigated within a stationary axisymmetric MHD model of the solar wind (SW) at all latitudes in the inertial frame of reference with the origin at the center of the Sun. The model takes into account differential (with respect to the heliolatitude) rotation of the Sun and full corotation of plasma inside a boundary sphere of radius 20RS, which breaks down beyond this sphere. Self-consistent distributions of the plasma density, current, and magnetic field in the SW are obtained by numerically solving a set of time-independent MHD equations in spherical coordinates. It is demonstrated that the calculated results do not contradict observational data and describe a gradual transition from the fast SW at high heliolatitudes to the slow SW at low heliolatitudes, as well as the steepening of the profiles of the main SW characteristics with increasing distance from the Sun. The obtained dependences extend understanding of the SW structure at low and high latitudes and agree with the well-known Parker model in the limit of a small Ampère force.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to observe whether a rotating magnetic field (RMF) could change the anomalous chemical wave propagation induced by a moderate‐intensity gradient static magnetic field (SMF) in an unstirred Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. The application of the SMF (maximum magnetic flux density = 0.22 T, maximum magnetic flux density gradient = 25.5 T/m, and peak magnetic force product (flux density × gradient) = 4 T2/m) accelerated the propagation velocity in a two‐dimensional pattern. Characteristic anomalous patterns of the wavefront shape were generated and the patterns were dependent on the SMF distribution. The deformation and increase in the propagation velocity were diminished by the application of an RMF at a rotation rate of 1 rpm for a few minutes. Numerical simulation by means of the time‐averaged value of the magnetic flux density gradient or the MF gradient force over one rotation partially supported the experimental observations. These considerations suggest that RMF exposure modulates the chemical wave propagation and that the degree of modulation could be, at least in part, dependent on the time‐averaged MF distribution over one rotation.
