Behavioral responses to predation risk are critical for survival but as antipredator behavior is costly, prey animals should flexibly modulate their optimum defensive responses by considering both costs and benefits, which are partly influenced by the individual characteristics of the prey. Turtles have the shell as a morphological structure that may provide partial protection against predators, but hiding into the shell may entail some high costs, and turtles should decide when to switch to an active escape strategy to safe refuges. Here, we examined how gender, body size, and sexual coloration influence inter‐individual variability of antipredatory hiding behavior into the shell of Spanish terrapins (Mauremys leprosa). We simulated predatory attacks under different conditions and measured the time that the turtles spent hidden entirely inside the shell (i.e., appearance times) and from then until the turtle started to flee actively (i.e., waiting times). Our results showed that when risk increased, appearance times increased but waiting times decreased. When turtles were in a prone position, their hiding behavior was related with their body weight with heavier turtles having longer appearance times. Also, the conspicuousness of limb coloration was important for the appearance times of males, but not for females. Thus, males with brighter coloration of the limb stripes had longer appearance times than duller ones. In addition, when turtles were overturned, males appeared out of the shell earlier than females and heavier turtles started to right sooner, but only when risk was low. However, when turtles were overturned and risk was high, they should assume that they have already been detected, making inter‐individual differences in size and coloration apparently unimportant for deciding hiding behavior. 相似文献

Recent studies have shown that melanin‐based coloration is associated with the ability to cope with stressful environments, potentially explaining why coloration covaries with anti‐predator behaviours, boldness and docility. To investigate whether these relationships are consistent across species, we performed a study in the European kestrel ( Falco tinnunculus). Similar to our results found previously in the barn owl ( Tyto alba), nestling kestrels displaying a larger sub‐terminal black tail band stayed on their back longer (tonic immobility test) and breathed at a lower rate than individuals with a smaller black band when handled. However, in contrast to barn owls, nestling kestrels with a larger black tail band were more aggressive and more agitated. Our results strengthen the hypothesis that melanin coloration is related to stress response and in turn to the reaction to predators, a very important personality trait (i.e. boldness). 相似文献

Secondary sexual trait expression can be influenced by fixed individual factors (such as genetic quality) as well as by dynamic factors (such as age and environmentally induced gene expression) that may be associated with variation in condition or quality. In particular, melanin‐based traits are known to relate to condition and there is a well‐characterized genetic pathway underpinning their expression. However, the mechanisms linking variable trait expression to genetic quality remain unclear. One plausible mechanism is that genetic quality could influence trait expression via differential methylation and differential gene expression. We therefore conducted a pilot study examining DNA methylation at a candidate gene (agouti‐related neuropeptide: AgRP) in the black grouse Lyrurus tetrix. We specifically tested whether CpG methylation covaries with age and multilocus heterozygosity (a proxy of genetic quality) and from there whether the expression of a melanin‐based ornament (ultraviolet‐blue chroma) correlates with DNA methylation. Consistent with expectations, we found clear evidence for age‐ and heterozygosity‐specific patterns of DNA methylation, with two CpG sites showing the greatest DNA methylation in highly heterozygous males at their peak age of reproduction. Furthermore, DNA methylation at three CpG sites was significantly positively correlated with ultraviolet‐blue chroma. Ours is the first study to our knowledge to document age‐ and quality‐dependent variation in DNA methylation and to show that dynamic sexual trait expression across the lifespan of an organism is associated with patterns of DNA methylation. Although we cannot demonstrate causality, our work provides empirical support for a mechanism that could potentially link key individual factors to variation in sexual trait expression in a wild vertebrate. 相似文献

Coloration in birds can act as an important sexual signal in males, yet in many species, both sexes display bright colors. Social selection may account for this pattern, with more brightly colored individuals pairing together on the best territories. Mutual mate choice may also explain this, as males investing a great deal of parental care in the offspring should be choosy about their social mates. It is less clear whether this pattern of mate choice can apply to extra‐pair partners as well. We examined western bluebirds (Sialia mexicana) to determine whether more colorful individuals tended to pair with one another, both in social pairs and between females and their extra‐pair partners. Both male and female western bluebirds display both UV‐blue structural plumage and a melanin‐based chestnut breast patch, although females are duller than males. Social pairs mated assortatively with regard to UV‐blue brightness, but not chestnut coloration. There was no evidence that extra‐pair partners mated assortatively, but males with brighter UV‐blue coloration had fewer extra‐pair offspring in their nests. Older males were more successful at siring extra‐pair offspring, despite displaying no differences in coloration compared to younger males. Coloration did not play a role in determining extra‐pair male success. These results suggest that coloration plays a role in the formation of social pairs, but not mate choice for extra‐pair partners. 相似文献

Body coloration serves a variety of purposes in animals. Diurnal and nocturnal predators such as spiders may use their body coloration to lure prey. We predicted here that the white patches on the forelegs on females of the nocturnal semi‐aquatic spider Dolomedes raptor lure prey, explaining why they are primarily displayed when the spider forages along the water edge. To test our prediction, we developed a color vision model assessing whether the patches are visible to pygmy grasshoppers, the spider's primary prey. We conducted a field experiment using cardboard dummies that resemble D. raptor in size, shape, and color, but with half of them lacking leg patches, and we staged interactions between pygmy grasshoppers and D. raptor with and without leg patches in a greenhouse. We found the white patches to be visible to grasshoppers. The dummies with white patches attracted more grasshopper prey than the dummies without the patches. Moreover, grasshoppers were more attracted to spiders when their white patches were present. Our results supported the hypothesis that the white patches of D. raptor lure prey. Our findings, nevertheless, could not be explained as the spider's body coloration acting as a sensory trap but it should not be ruled out. More studies on a wider range of predators and prey will give more meaningful insights into the co‐evolution of predatory lures and prey sensory modalities. 相似文献

The ‘good genes’ hypothesis of sexual selection predicts that male ornaments are favoured by female mate choice because male ornament reveals genetic quality. In species with different male reproductive tactics, variation in genetic quality among ‘sneaking’ males has rarely been investigated, as usually ‘sneakers’ are thought not to be chosen by females. Here we focused on the alternative reproductive tactic in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar Linnaeus, 1758) to test whether the skin colour of sneakers may reveal the performance traits of their offspring. A fully factorial breeding design was realized between 20 sneakers and two females using in vitro fertilization. We quantified the red and dark colorations of males and measured the survival of their progeny under semi‐natural conditions. In addition, the size of offspring and their emergence timing from the gravel nest were monitored in the laboratory. We found that darker males sired more viable offspring, whereas red coloration was negatively correlated with offspring survival. Nevertheless, darker and redder male pigmentations were linked to a delay in offspring emergence. These results demonstrate that colours can reveal individual genetic quality in an alternative male reproductive tactic, with male melanin‐based coloration being linked to both beneficial and detrimental effects for the offspring. Our results imply that sneaker ornaments may potentially play a role in both intra‐ and intersexual selection. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111 , 126–135. 相似文献

Objective: Treatment of male rodents with estradiol (E2) is associated with anorexia and weight loss by poorly understood mechanisms. We examined the role of the orexigenic hypothalamic peptide melanin‐concentrating hormone (MCH) and the appetite‐inhibiting, fat‐derived hormone leptin in mediating E2‐induced anorexia. Research Methods and Procedures: We studied the effect of E2 treatment (implantation of either E2 pellet or matching placebo) in male C57Bl/6J mice, as well as in a lean mouse model (MCH knockout mice) and an obese model (leptin‐deficient ob/ob mice). We also studied the effect of E2 treatment in the context of high‐fat diet. Results: We confirmed E2 dose‐dependent anorexia in male wild type mice fed a normal chow diet. E2 treatment was associated with a significant decrease in body fat, serum leptin levels, and arcuate hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin expression. E2‐implanted mice also showed increased hypothalamic neuropeptide Y and MCH expression. As MCH has been implicated in E2‐induced hypophagia, we performed E2 pellet implantation in MCH knockout mice and observed hypophagia and weight loss, indicating that MCH is not an essential mediator of E2‐induced anorexia. E2‐implanted ob/ob mice also had hypophagia and weight loss, indicating that leptin is not essential for E2‐induced anorexia. High‐fat diet significantly exacerbated the effect of E2 treatment, leading to a 99.6% decrease in food intake at 48 hours and a 30% loss of body weight within 1 week. Discussion: The anorectic effects of E2 were independent of MCH and leptin. Our results suggested that E2 may have effects on nutrient preferences. 相似文献

Melanin‐based sexual dichromatism in the Western Palearctic avifauna implies darker males and lighter females 下载免费PDF全文
Melanins are the most common pigments providing coloration in the plumage and bare skin of birds and other vertebrates. Numerous species are dichromatic in the adult or definitive plumage, but the direction of this type of sexual dichromatism (i.e. whether one sex tends to be darker than the other) has not been thoroughly investigated. Using color plates, we analysed the presence of melanin‐based color patches in 666 species belonging to 69 families regularly breeding in the Western Palearctic. Sexual dichromatism based on melanins in at least one integumentary part involved 205 (30.7%) species. The body parts contributing more frequently to dichromatism were the dorsal areas, head and breast, whereas the less dichromatic body parts were the belly and the exposed integumentary parts (i.e. bill and legs). Regarding the phylogenetic spread of dichromatisms, 37 (53.6%) families contained at least one species with melanin‐based sexual dimorphism in the definitive adult plumage. As for the direction of the color difference, males are darker than females in a majority of species, meaning that males tend to produce more eumelanin and females tend to synthesize more pheomelanin. This survey has revealed the high prevalence of melanins in the emergence of sexual dichromatism in birds, at least in the Western Palearctic. Whether the described pattern is due to sexual selection promoting more conspicuous males or to natural selection for more cryptic females remains to be determined. Given that pheomelanin synthesis concurrently consumes the antioxidant glutathione but may also reduces toxic cysteine, sex‐biased physiological factors should also be given consideration in the evolution of bird plumages. 相似文献

Independent Mating Preferences for Male Body Size and Coloration in Female Trinidadian Guppies 下载免费PDF全文
Heather L. Auld Ryan J. P. Pusiak Jean‐Guy J. Godin 《Ethology : formerly Zeitschrift fur Tierpsychologie》2016,122(7):597-608
Although females in numerous species generally prefer males with larger, brighter and more elaborate sexual traits, there is nonetheless considerable intra‐ and interpopulation variation in mating preferences amongst females that requires explanation. Such variation exists in the Trinidadian guppy, Poecilia reticulata, an important model organism for the study of sexual selection and mate choice. While female guppies tend to prefer more ornamented males as mates, particularly those with greater amounts of orange coloration, there remains variation both in male traits and female mating preferences within and between populations. Male body size is another trait that is sexually selected through female mate choice in some species, but has not been examined as extensively as body coloration in the guppy despite known intra‐ and interpopulation variation in this trait among adult males and its importance for survivorship in this species. In this study, we used a dichotomous‐choice test to quantify the mating preferences of female guppies, originating from a low‐predation population in Trinidad, for two male traits, body length and area of the body covered with orange and black pigmentation, independently of each other. We expected strong female mating preferences for both male body length and coloration in this population, given relaxation from predation and presumably relatively low cost of choice. Females indeed exhibited a strong preference for larger males as expected, but surprisingly a weaker (but nonetheless significant) preference for orange and black coloration. Interestingly, larger females demonstrated stronger preferences for larger males than did smaller females, which could potentially lead to size‐assortative mating in nature. 相似文献

Spacing Behavior of a Non‐Larder‐Hoarding Tamiasciurus: A Study of Mearns's Squirrels in Xeric Coniferous Forests 下载免费PDF全文

In ecosystems with seasonal fluctuations in food supply many species use two strategies to store food: larder hoarding and scatter hoarding. However, because species at different geographic locations may experience distinct environmental conditions, differences in hoarding behavior may occur. Tree squirrels in the genus Tamiasciurus display variation in hoarding behavior. Whereas red (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and Douglas's (Tamiasciurus douglasii) squirrels in mesic coniferous forests defend territories centered around larder hoards maintaining non‐overlapping home ranges, red squirrels in deciduous forests defend small scatter‐hoarded caches of cones maintaining overlapping home ranges. As in other rodent species, variation in hoarding behavior appears to influence the spacing behavior of red and Douglas's squirrels. In contrast, Mearns's squirrels (Tamiasciurus mearnsi) in xeric coniferous forests neither rely on larder hoards nor appear to display territorial behavior. Unfortunately, little is known about the ecology of this southernmost Tamiasciurus. Using radiotelemetry, we estimated home‐range size, overlap, and maximum distance traveled from nest to examine the spacing behavior of Mearns's squirrels. Similar to scatter‐hoarding rodents, maximum distance traveled from nest was greater for males during mating season, whereas those of females were similar year round. Although no seasonal differences were detected, male home ranges were three times larger during mating season, whereas those of females were smaller and displayed a minor variation between seasons. Home ranges were overlapped year round but contrary to our expectations, overlap was greater during mating season for both sexes, with no detectable relationship between male home‐range size and the number of females overlapped during mating season. Overall, the results appear to support our hypothesis that in the absence of larder hoards, the spacing behavior of Mearns's squirrels should be different from larder‐hoarding congeners and more similar to scatter‐hoarding rodents. 相似文献

Although relatively rare, adoptions have been reported in a number of mammals, involving almost exclusively individuals of the same species, and hardly ever between species or across genera. Adoption remains poorly documented and its proximate causes are controversial. Here, we describe a unique case of a cross‐genus adoption within a small community of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) at Rangiroa Atoll in French Polynesia. It involves a foster female adopting a presumed melon‐headed whale (Peponocephala electra) calf while already mothering its presumed biological offspring. While the inclusive fitness hypothesis can be rejected for this adult female mother, acquisition of parental skills is also unlikely to have driven adoption in parallel to natural motherhood. We argue that the primiparous foster mother’s inexperience and personality may have contributed to factors driving such non‐adaptive behavior. We also propose that the adoptee’s persistence in initiating and maintaining an association with the adult female bottlenose dolphin could have played a major role in the adoption’s ultimate success, as well as the persistence of this cross‐genus adoption after the disappearance of the biological offspring. A brief discussion of adoption and hybridization within the Delphinidae taxon is included to identify how this cross‐genus adoption fits into context of marine mammal parental care. 相似文献

Testing the role of background matching and self‐shadow concealment in explaining countershading coloration in wild‐caught rainbowfish 下载免费PDF全文

Countershading, or dorsal pigmentary darkening (DPD), describes a form of vertically varying coloration, where an animal typically has a dark dorsal surface and a paler ventral side, and is widespread among mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes and insects. DPD is thought to confer concealment from predators and, in terrestrial systems, there is good evidence that the dark–light transition in body coloration acts to conceal the body's shadow. Surprisingly few studies of DPD have been conducted in aquatic environments, and thus it is not known whether the mechanisms of concealment are similar to those that operate in terrestrial habitats. In this study, we determined the role of the light environment and predation risk in determining DPD in wild‐caught populations of a freshwater fish, the western rainbowfish (Melanotaenia australis). We also examined the underlying mechanisms of DPD for concealment by testing the assumptions of background matching and self‐shadow concealment. In a subsequent experiment, we determined whether any observed variation in DPD was maintained when the visual background was manipulated in the laboratory (to induce a change in body coloration). We found that both the amount of downwelling irradiance and the level of predation risk at the collection site affected skin darkness (dorsal, ventral and overall), whereas the ratio of dorsoventral coloration (DPD) was not affected by the parameters considered. The laboratory experiment revealed that fish changed their body coloration to match their visual background, and did so by altering the relative ratio of dorsoventral skin darkness. In contrast with research on terrestrial animals, our findings suggest that the most likely method of achieving crypsis is through background matching, rather than self‐shadow concealment. It is thus possible that differences in the optical characteristics of terrestrial and aquatic environments, and/or variation in the angles at which prey are typically viewed and attacked, have resulted in divergent mechanisms of using DPD to attain crypsis. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 114 , 915–928. 相似文献

Using an automated cell counting technique developed previously (Case et al., Ecology and Evolution 2014; 4: 3494), we explore the lifespan effects of lac‐1, a ceramide synthase gene paralogous to lag‐1 in Neurospora crassa in conjunction with the band bd (ras‐1) gene. We find that the replicative lifespan of a lac‐1KO bd double mutants is short, about one race tube cycle, and this double mutant lacks a strong ~21‐hr clock cycle as shown by race tube and fluorometer analysis of fluorescent strains including lac‐1KO. This short replicative lifespan phenotype is contrasted with a very long estimated chronological lifespan for lac‐1KO bd double mutants from 247 to 462 days based on our regression analyses on log viability, and for the single mutant lac‐1KO, 161 days. Both of these estimated lifespans are much higher than that of previously studied WT and bd single mutant strains. In a lac‐1 rescue and induction experiment, the expression of lac‐1+ as driven by a quinic acid‐dependent promoter actually decreases the median chronological lifespan of cells down to only 7 days, much lower than the 34‐day median lifespan found in control bd conidia also grown on quinic acid media, which we interpret as an effect of balancing selection acting on ceramide levels based on previous findings from the literature. Prior work has shown phytoceramides can act as a signal for apoptosis in stressed N. crassa cells. To test this hypothesis of balancing selection on phytoceramide levels, we examine the viability of WT, lag‐1KO bd, and lac‐1KO bd strains following the dual stresses of heat and glycolysis inhibition, along with phytoceramide treatments of different dosages. We find that the phytoceramide dosage–response curve is altered in the lag‐1KO bd mutant, but not in the lac‐1KO bd mutant. We conclude that phytoceramide production is responsible for the previously reported longevity effects in the lag‐1KO bd mutant, but a different ceramide may be responsible for the longevity effect observed in the lac‐1KO bd mutant. 相似文献

Brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), corticotropin‐releasing factor (CRF), and hypothalamic neuronal histamine are anorexigenic substances within the hypothalamus. This study examined the interactions among BDNF, CRF, and histamine during the regulation of feeding behavior in rodents. Food intake was measured after treatment with BDNF, α‐fluoromethyl histidine (FMH; a specific suicide inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase that depletes hypothalamic neuronal histamine), or CRF antagonist. We measured food intake in wild‐type mice and mice with targeted disruption of the histamine H1 receptor (H1KO mice) after central BDNF infusion. Furthermore, we investigated CRF content and histamine turnover in the hypothalamus after BDNF treatment, and conversely, BDNF content in the hypothalamus after histamine treatment. We used immunohistochemical staining for histamine H1 receptors (H1‐R) in BDNF neurons. BDNF‐induced feeding suppression was partially attenuated in rats pre‐treated with FMH or a CRF antagonist, and in H1KO mice. BDNF treatment increased CRF content and histamine turnover in the hypothalamus. Histamine increased BDNF content in the hypothalamus. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that H1‐Rs were expressed on BDNF neurons in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus. These results indicate that CRF and hypothalamic neuronal histamine mediate the suppressive effects of BDNF on feeding behavior and body weight. 相似文献

As one of the most important traditional Chinese medicine, the quality of Polygala tenuifolia is difficult to control and a new method must be established to facilitate/assist the breeding of P. tenuifolia. In this study, UPLC/Q‐TOF‐MS‐based metabolomics analysis was performed to determine the chemical composition and screen metabolite biomarkers according to agronomic traits. A total of 29 compounds and 18 metabolite biomarkers were found. AFLP‐based marker‐assisted selection (MAS) was used to identify molecular marker bands and screen characteristic bands associated with specific agronomic traits. 184 bands and 76 characteristic AFLP bands were found. The correlation network between compounds and characteristic AFLP bands was built, so we may directly breed certain P. tenuifolia herbs with special agronomic traits (or characteristic AFLP bands), which exhibit specific pharmacological functions depending on the content of the active compounds. The proposed method of metabolomics coupled with MAS could facilitate/assist the breeding of P. tenuifolia. 相似文献

Nesfatin‐1, corticotropin‐releasing hormone (CRH), thyrotropin‐releasing hormone (TRH), and hypothalamic neuronal histamine act as anorexigenics in the hypothalamus. We examined interactions among nesfatin‐1, CRH, TRH, and histamine in the regulation of feeding behavior in rodents. We investigated whether the anorectic effect of nesfatin‐1, α‐fluoromethyl histidine (FMH; a specific suicide inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase that depletes hypothalamic neuronal histamine), a CRH antagonist, or anti‐TRH antibody affects the anorectic effect of nesfatin‐1, whether nesfatin‐1 increases CRH and TRH contents and histamine turnover in the hypothalamus, and whether histamine increases nesfatin‐1 content in the hypothalamus. We also investigated whether nesfatin‐1 decreases food intake in mice with targeted disruption of the histamine H1 receptor (H1KO mice) and if the H1 receptor (H1‐R) co‐localizes in nesfatin‐1 neurons. Nesfatin‐1‐suppressed feeding was partially attenuated in rats administered with FMH, a CRH antagonist, or anti‐TRH antibody, and in H1KO mice. Nesfatin‐1 increased CRH and TRH levels and histamine turnover, whereas histamine increased nesfatin‐1 in the hypothalamus. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed H1‐R expression on nesfatin‐1 neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. These results indicate that CRH, TRH, and hypothalamic neuronal histamine mediate the suppressive effects of nesfatin‐1 on feeding behavior. 相似文献

Die‐back disease caused by Phomopsis (Diaporthe) azadirachtae is the devastating disease of Azadirachta indica. Accurate identification of P. azadirachtae is always problematic due to morphological plasticity and delayed appearance of conidia. A species‐specific PCR‐based assay was developed for rapid and reliable identification of P. azadirachtae by designing a species‐specific primer‐targeting ITS region of P. azadirachtae isolates. The assay was validated with DNA isolated from different Phomopsis species and other fungal isolates. The PCR assay amplified 313‐bp product from all the isolates of P. azadirachtae and not from any other Phomopsis species or any genera indicating its specificity. The assay successfully detected the pathogen DNA in naturally and artificially infected neem seeds and twigs indicating its applicability in seed quarantine and seed health testing. The sensitivity of the assay was 100 fg when genomic DNA of all isolates was analysed. The PCR‐based assay was 92% effective in comparison with seed plating technique in detecting the pathogen. This is the first report on the development of species‐specific PCR assay for identification and detection of P. azadirachtae. Thus, PCR‐based assay developed is very specific, rapid, confirmatory and sensitive tool for detection of pathogen P. azadirachtae at early stages. 相似文献
