Studies on diet preferences of stream-dwelling salmonids have mostly been limited to a relatively small range in body size. This study examined the influence of salmonid body size on prey size and diet composition, and its consequences for growth, in landlocked stream-resident brown trout, Salmo trutta (2.5–61.3cm) in the Laxá River, N-E Iceland. The most common prey of the 1622 trout sampled, were blackflies, Simulium vittatum, chironomid midges and the freshwater snail, Lymnaea peregra, which represented 56.3%, 21.8%, 10.8% of the stomach content volume, respectively. In general, the Laxá trout showed a consistent, but moderate, shift towards larger prey with increased body size. The relatively stable growth and the large body size attained were probably due to the high production of small benthic invertebrates and only secondarily to the ontogenetic shift towards larger prey.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that hatchery brown trout Salmo trutta smolts, with 50% reduced or no feeding over the last 5 months before release, were more likely to migrate to the sea than individuals with standard feeding ratios. The juvenile fish were divided into three groups 176 days before release: (A) with no feeding, (B) with 50% and (C) with 100% feeding. To study their seaward migration, 40 fish from each feeding group were tagged with acoustic transmitters and tracked by automatic listening stations in the River Nidelva, Trondheim, Norway, its estuary and in the nearest marine environment. At the time of release, mean condition factor was significantly lower in group A and the fish from groups A and B had higher levels of Na+, K+‐ATPase. Significantly more fish from group A migrated to the sea, but the rate of downstream progression from release to the estuary did not differ between the three groups. In conclusion, the S. trutta smolts with no access to food in the last 176 day before release were more likely to migrate to the sea. Fish from all three feeding groups, however, appeared to smoltify and had the same rate of downstream progression to the estuary. This indicates that differences in migratory behaviour between individuals from the three feeding groups begin from the time when the fish reach saline waters. It is suggested that feeding in hatcheries has to be greatly reduced (by 50% or more) over several months to have a pronounced effect on the migratory behaviour in S. trutta.  相似文献

We have studied levels and distribution of genetic variation in nine isolated populations of Brown trout in NW Spain. In the present study, we have tried to test the importance of preservation of genetic variability for the survival of a set of isolated Brown trout (Salmo trutta) populations from the same river drainage. We screened genetic variation in three different markers, mitochondrial, microsatellites and Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), presumed to be under different selective pressures. Overall, genetic diversity varied considerably across populations and the distribution of genetic variation was similar at MHC and microsatellites; highly polymorphic populations at the microsatellite loci were also highly polymorphic at the MHC. We also observed high levels of differentiation among populations. Although we found evidence suggesting that balancing selection has influenced the long term evolution of the MHC, genetic drift seems to have eroded the effect of selection, becoming the predominant evolutionary force shaping genetic variation in some of the smaller populations. Despite current lack of variation at the MHC, these small populations seem to have remained viable for a long time.  相似文献

The stocking of hatchery-origin fish into rivers and lakes has long been used in fisheries management to try to enhance catches, especially for trout and salmon species. Frequently, however, the long-term impacts of stocking programmes have not been evaluated. In this study, the authors investigate the contribution of a stocking programme undertaken to support the rod catch of sea trout in the Shetland Islands, UK. Once a highly productive recreational fishery, Shetland sea trout catches crashed in the mid-1990s. Around the time that stocking began, increases in rod catches were also reported, with advocates of the stocking highlighting the apparent success of the programme. Using a suite of genetic markers (microsatellites), this study explores the contribution of the stocking programme to the Shetland sea trout population. The authors found that the domesticated broodstock and wild spawned brown trout from seven streams were genetically distinct. Despite extensive stocking, wild spawned brown trout dominated, even in those streams with a long history of supplementation. The majority of sea trout caught and analysed were of wild origin – only a single individual was of pure stocked origin, with a small number of fish being of wild × stocked origins. This study suggests that stocking with a domesticated strain of brown trout has made only a very limited contribution to the Shetland Islands rod catch, and that the revival of sea trout numbers appears to be driven almost exclusively by recovery of trout spawned in the wild.  相似文献

Phylogenetically unrelated parasites often increase the chances of their transmission by inducing similar phenotypic changes in their hosts. However, it is not known whether these convergent strategies rely on the same biochemical precursors. In this paper, we explored such aspects by studying two gammarid species (Gammarus insensibilis and Gammarus pulex; Crustacea: Amphipoda: Gammaridae) serving as intermediate hosts in the life cycle of two distantly related parasites: the trematode, Microphallus papillorobustus and the acanthocephalan, Polymorphus minutus. Both these parasite species are known to manipulate the behaviour of their amphipod hosts, bringing them towards the water surface, where they are preferentially eaten by aquatic birds (definitive hosts). By studying and comparing the brains of infected G. insensibilis and G. pulex with proteomics tools, we have elucidated some of the proximate causes involved in the parasite-induced alterations of host behaviour for each system. Protein identifications suggest that altered physiological compartments in hosts can be similar (e.g. immunoneural connexions) or different (e.g. vision process), and hence specific to the host-parasite association considered. Moreover, proteins required to alter the same physiological compartment can be specific or conversely common in both systems, illustrating in the latter case a molecular convergence in the proximate mechanisms of manipulation.  相似文献

Batch culture experiments using viral enrichment were conducted to test the response of a coastal bacterial community to autochthonous (i.e., co-existing) or allochthonous riverine viruses. The effects of viral infections on bacterial dynamics and activity were assessed by epifluorescence microscopy and thymidine incorporation, respectively, whereas the effect of viral infection on bacterial community composition was examined by polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism 16S ribosomal RNA fingerprinting. The percentages of high nucleic acid-containing cells, evaluated by flow cytometry, were significantly correlated (r 2 = 0.91, n = 12, p < 0.0001) to bacterial production, making this value a good predictor of active cell dynamics along the study. While confinement and temperature were the two principal experimental factors affecting bacterial community composition and dynamics, respectively, additions of freshwater viruses had significant effects on coastal bacterial communities. Thus, foreign viruses significantly reduced net bacterial population increase as compared to the enrichment treated with inactivated virus. Moreover, freshwater viruses recurrently and specifically affected bacterial community composition, as compared to addition of autochthonous viruses. In most cases, the combined treatment viruses and freshwater dissolved organic matter helped to maintain or even enhance species richness in coastal bacterial communities in agreement to the ‘killing the winner’ hypothesis. Thus, riverine virus input could potentially influence bacterial community composition of the coastal bay albeit with modest modification of bulk bacterial growth. In this study, 34 anadromous brown trout (sea trout) Salmo trutta were equipped with acoustic transmitters in order to examine whether they performed avoidance behaviour in response to a CFT Legumin (rotenone) treatment in the Norwegian River Vefsna. Migratory behaviour of the S. trutta was monitored by use of 15 automatic listening stations and manual tracking in the lower part of the river, in the estuary and in the fjord. None of the studied S. trutta survived the rotenone treatment and no indications of successful avoidance behaviour were observed.  相似文献

The motility of salmonid sperm is pH-sensitive and the buffering capacity of the seminal plasma is low. The objective of the present study was to determine the extent to which sperm contribute to the buffering capacity of whole steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) semen. To determine the buffering capacity, semen and seminal plasma samples were titrated with HCl and pH measurements taken at 1-2 min. The buffering capacity of semen was not different from that of seminal plasma over the pH range 7.5 to 8.5 and was approximately 15% to 20% less over the range 6.0 to 7.0. Comparable results were obtained for the semen and seminal plasma of the chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). To assess whether the intracellular environment could influence the buffering capacity, the effects of cell disruption with n-butanol and Triton X-100 (TX-100) were determined. Over the pH range 7.5 to 8.5, the presence of n-butanol or TX-100 resulted in a doubling of the buffering capacity of the semen; TX-100, but not n-butanol, increased semen buffering capacity over the pH range 6.0 to 7.0. To determine whether the sperm's intracellular compartment might contribute to the buffering capacity over a longer duration, semen and seminal plasma samples were acidified with HCl and the pH measured over several hours. These data suggest that intact sperm contribute no more than about 25% to the buffering capacity of whole semen. The buffering capacity of steelhead semen and seminal plasma were comparably and modestly temperature sensitive. The results suggest that the sperm may contribute to the buffering capacity of the semen over a physiological pH range, however, if so, the effect is relatively small.  相似文献

The Bertha armyworm, Mamestra configurata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous Nearctic insect known to feed on over 40 different host plant species, and can be a pest of canola (Brassica napus L. and Brassica rapa L.), flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in the Northern Great Plains. Bertha armyworm is known to sometimes switch hosts through between‐field movements, prompting this study to investigate its adherence to a particular host plant species after completing a period of initial development on it. In a laboratory study, larvae were reared to either their fourth or sixth instars on either intact or excised leaf tissue of one of seven host species, and were then allowed to select feeding hosts from various choices that included canola, B. napus and B. rapa (Brassicaceae), Canada thistle, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. (Compositae), flax, L. usitatissimum (Linaceae), field pea and alfalfa, Pisum sativum L. and M. sativa (Leguminosae), and lamb’s quarters, Chenopodium album L. (Chenopodiaceae). In general, Bertha armyworm larvae showed little propensity to feed on the host plant species on which they had been reared in their early life stages. Exceptions occurred for larvae reared on intact tissue of B. rapa and P. sativum, where larvae were subsequently observed feeding on these hosts significantly more frequently than on other host plants. When larvae of Bertha armyworm were reared through early developmental stages on intact plant tissue of a single host, B. rapa was frequently the choice for subsequent feeding. Movements of Bertha armyworm larvae between fields therefore appear to result from larvae that have exploited food resources in one area and are dispersing to regions of improved host plant availability.  相似文献

We studied the ability of domestic cats to distinguish familiarity based on faecal odours. This was evaluated by comparing the sniffing duration of cats?? own, familiar, and unfamiliar faeces. We found that (1) sniffing durations differed between unfamiliar faeces and the other types of faeces, (2) sniffing durations of faeces of the same unfamiliar individuals decreased over time, and (3) sniffing durations toward unfamiliar faeces increased after change of donors. These results indicate that domestic cats can distinguish the faecal odours based on familiarity. This ability could be adaptive for domestic cats to maintain their social relationships.  相似文献

The southeastern mountains of Spain represent the southernmost limit of the genus Austropotamobius and the species A. pallipes (Lereboullet). The taxonomic position of this isolated crayfish in southern Spain is not clear, being genetically close to A. italicus, but morphologically distinct. A severe decline occurred during the 1980s, especially due to expansion of the alien species Procambarus clarkii, a North American freshwater crayfish and a vector of the aphanomycosis disease. In order to design a strategy for native crayfish conservation, recent trends in native crayfish populations, influence of isolation and habitat variables on their survival and possibilities for their recovery through restocking were studied. A decline in populations was observed between 1991 and 2002 (from 26 to 14 populations), and a total extinction could be predicted within the next 13 years. Two well-defined periods of rapid extinction rates were detected, 1991–1994 (1.25 populations/year) and 1999–2002 (1.50 populations/year). Main causes of extinction for these two periods were invasion by P. clarkii and mortality by unknown causes, respectively. The isolation variables had some positive effects on survival of populations but these cannot offer a sufficient guarantee, since several cases of extinction can be affected by a large component of stochastic factors, including random catastrophes. On the other hand, survival trials and restocking experiments showed that it was possible to recover lost habitats, when P. clarkii was absent and environmental conditions were good. It is concluded that it is possible to avoid extinction of the native crayfish populations; however, the conservation strategies must be based on an urgent stocking/restocking program.  相似文献

In this study I examine the variability in calling activity of Sciarasaga quadrata over both the short (4 d) and long term (life span), and the temporal pattern to host searching by its most significant natural enemy, the ormiine fly Homotrixa alleni. Indeed, few male S. quadrata survive the entire calling season as this acoustically orienting parasitoid fly continually ‘culls’ calling males out of the population. I found that male S. quadrata commence calling over 1 h before sunset, cease around midnight and call, on average, for over 3 h within this period (range 0–11 h 09 min). There was significant concordance and repeatability in calling activity over both the short and long term, enabling me to conclude that relative differences in calling activity among males persist throughout a male's life span. There was a distinct peak to host searching by gravid female flies, with 82 % of all flies collected at acoustic traps between sunset and midnight. A positive association between call duration (time spent calling) and fly attraction was evident from multiple collections of flies at single traps. Counter to expectation, there was no significant decline in average call duration across successive collections of males, indicating that long-call-duration males were not being selectively culled by flies from the calling population. Males at the end of the calling season, when their remaining reproductive potential is low, allocate the majority of their calling time between sunset and midnight despite the high risk of fly attack. The distribution of call durations within the population was not skewed, which if heritable, indicates a lack of history of directional selection acting on call duration. Limited evidence suggests that encounters with females are rare in S. quadrata so that males may be selected, irrespective of natural selection pressure, to call for long periods of time to optimize their chance of attracting mates. The above findings are further discussed in relation to parasitoid foraging and acoustic reproductive strategies.  相似文献

For pearl culture, the pearl oyster is forced open and a nucleus is implanted into the gonad with a mantle graft. The outer mantle epithelial cells of the implanted mantle graft elongate and surrounding the nucleus a pearl sac is formed. Shell matrix proteins secreted by the pearl sac play an important role in the regulation of pearl formation. Recently, seven shell matrix proteins were identified from the pearl oyster Pinctada fucata. However, there is a paucity of information on the function of these proteins and their gene expression patterns. Our study aims to elucidate the relationship between pearl type, quality, and gene expression patterns of six shell matrix proteins (msi60, n16, nacrein, msi31, prismalin-14, and aspein) in the pearl sac based on real-time PCR analysis. After culturing for about 2 months, the pearl sac tissues were collected from 22 individuals: 12 with high quality (HP), nine with low quality (LP), and one with organic (ORG) pearl formation. The surface of each of the 12 HP pearls was composed only of a nacreous layer; in contrast, that of the nine LP pearls was composed of nacreous and prismatic layers. The six target gene expressions were detected in all individuals. However, delta threshold cycle (ΔC T) for msi31 was significantly higher in the HP than in the LP individuals (Mann–Whitney’s U test, p = 0.02). This means that the relative expression level of msi31, which constitutes the framework of the prismatic layer, was higher in the LP than in the HP individuals.  相似文献

Mitochondrial haplotype diversity in 27 populations of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., in Austria was investigated by sequencing the 5' end of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. Although all populations are within the Danube drainage, 44% of all individuals carried Atlantic basin haplotypes. It is argued that the presence of these haplotypes in Austria primarily reflects introgression stemming from the stocking of hatchery-reared fish. However, several lines of evidence suggest that some natural colonization from Atlantic lineages may have contributed to the present haplotype diversity. Nonetheless, the more diverse Danubian clade is represented by regionally distinct haplotype diversity that should be protected from the continued introduction of domesticated strains of exogenous fish  相似文献

1. Around the year 2000, historically abundant populations of brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) and Atlantic salmon ( S. salar ) co-occurring in rivers flowing along the Cantabrian corridor of north-western Spain showed a dramatic decline to alarming levels. For one reason or another, fishing was not banned and fishing pressure continued to reduce the few survivors. Unexpectedly, the populations recovered 'naturally' in a very short time period to the extent that in 2004–06 numbers had attained population sizes comparable to those of the mid 1980s.
2. The population of brown trout in Rio Chaballos showed a boom-and-bust pattern concurrent with those observed across broader geographical scales. This study revisits a 22-year data set to explore the nature of the severe decline and rapid recovery of this population.
3. Recruitment was related to stream discharge in March that covers the emergence period and the earliest search stages for food. Coefficients of variation for discharge and recruitment increased over the years and were highly correlated with each other, demonstrating that increased temporal variability in recruitment is strongly linked to increased variability in stream discharge. In turn, recruitment appears to be the major determinant of year-class strength and hence, of population size.
4. A number of factors appeared to operate as resilience mechanisms, permitting the population to increase rapidly when environmental conditions are optimal. These include strong recruitment-discharge relationships, short life-span, small stocks of eggs or offspring required to fill the amount of space suitable for the youngest juveniles and a few females surviving to spawn for a second time.
5. Implications for fishery management and conservation are discussed in the context of the expectation that these populations will vary over the coming years within ranges similar to those in this study.  相似文献

We examined polymorphism at seven microsatellite loci among sea trout (Salmo trutta) (n = 846) collected from three areas in the Limfjord (Denmark). We then assessed their potential population source by comparing, using a mixed stock analysis (MSA) Bayesian framework, their genetic composition to that of brown trout collected from 32 tributaries pooled into nine geographical regions (n = 3801) and two hatcheries (n = 222) used for stocking. For each of the three regional sea trout groups (western, central and eastern Limfjord, n = 91, n = 426, n = 329, respectively), MSA was conducted with (i) all individuals in the group, (ii) with the subset of spawning sea trout only and (iii) with the subset of foraging, nonspawning individuals only, a subset that consisted primarily of sea trout caught during their first year at sea. For all three regional sea trout groups, a higher proportion of individuals (regardless of whether they were foraging or spawning) appear to have originated from the rivers that drain locally, than from the rivers that drain in other parts of the Limfjord. This suggests (1) that sea trout, at least during their first year at sea, undertake limited migrations within the Limfjord system and (2) that sea trout on their spawning run were caught close to their natal rivers. The proportion of sea trout of hatchery origin varied widely among all three Limfjord areas and broadly reflected regional stocking histories, with high proportions of sea trout of domestic origin in the east (39.3%), where stocking with domestic trout was practised intensely at the time of sampling, and in the west (57.2%), where a programme of coastal stocking of post smolts took place over several years in the early 1990s. In contrast, in the central Limfjord, where stocking with domestic trout was largely abandoned in the early 1990s, the proportion of sea trout of domestic origin was only 8.5%. Interestingly, for all three regional sea trout groups, virtually no sea trout of hatchery origin were found among the spawning individuals, which were on average larger than the nonspawning sea trout. These results suggest that stocked domestic brown trout that become anadromous experience high mortality at sea and are therefore largely absent among the larger, spawning individuals. We conclude that sea trout of domestic origin exhibit much reduced ability to reproduce and are unlikely to contribute significantly to the local gene pool largely because of a relatively high mortality at sea before the onset of maturity.  相似文献

Copulation and/or cohabitation with a pregnant female facilitate paternal behavior in male mice. However, their contribution to the rearing of the offspring is still not well understood. Our aims were to investigate the behavior of sires toward own or alien pups; the immediate consequences of the presence of fathers on the offspring and the behavior of the mother; and whether the exposure of juvenile males to newborn siblings, in an overlapping litters context, facilitates paternal behavior in C57BL/6 mice. We found that sires behaved paternally toward alien pups at both postpartum days 3 and 7; did not affect the behavior of the mother (e.g., licking and grooming, retrieval behavior, time in the nest, and crouching postures); and reduced the time offspring stayed alone in the nest. The exposure to newborn siblings did not promote paternal behavior in juvenile males. Therefore, sires are more paternal than usually described in the literature for laboratory mice, suggesting a facultative role in the rearing of the offspring. However, juvenile male mice, in contrast to juvenile females, could be adapted to leave the nest earlier without major contribution to the offspring.  相似文献

Pharmacological opening of mitochondrial cardiac ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) channels has the chance to be a promising but still controversial cardioprotective mechanism. Physiological roles of mitochondrial K(ATP) channels in the myocardium remain unclear. We studied the effects of diazoxide, a specific opener of these channels, on the function of rat mitochondria in situ in saponin-permeabilized fibers using an ionic medium that mimics the cytosol. In the presence of NADH-producing substrates (malate + glutamate), neither 100 microm diazoxide nor 100 microm glibenclamide (a K(ATP) channel blocker) changed the mitochondrial respiration in the absence or presence of ADP. Because the K(ATP) channel function could be modified by changes in adenine nucleotide concentrations near the mitochondria, we studied the effects of diazoxide and glibenclamide on the functional activity of mitochondrial kinases. Both diazoxide and glibenclamide did not change the in situ ADP sensitivity in the presence or absence of creatine (apparent K(m) values for ADP were, respectively, 59 +/- 9 and 379 +/- 45 microm). Similarly, stimulation of the mitochondrial respiration with AMP in the presence of ATP due to adenylate kinase activity was not affected by the modulators of K(ATP) channels. However, when succinate was used as substrate, diazoxide significantly inhibited basal respiration by 22% and maximal respiration by 24%. Thus, at a cardioprotective dose, the main functional effect of diazoxide depends on respiratory substrates and seems not to be related to K(ATP) channel activity.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of environmental variation on assemblages of dragonfly larvae (Odonata). We hypothesize that there is a significant correlation between species richness, species composition, and abundance of Odonata individuals, and habitat integrity and abiotic variables. To test this hypothesis, we sampled odonate larvae at 12 streams in the Suiá-Miçú River basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil, during three different periods of the year. Local physical and chemical variables (temperature, pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solids (TDS), and oxidation reduction potential (ORP)) were measured at each site using a multi-parameter probe, and integrity was assessed using the Habitat Integrity Index (HII). The variation in richness, abundance, and composition of Odonata species was related to the environmental variables analyzed, primarily by the abiotic factors pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, and oxidation reduction potential. Our hypothesis was corroborated for the suborder Anisoptera, which showed a significant relationship with these variables, whereas Zygoptera was only related to pH. Our results show the importance of physical and chemical conditions in ecological studies using Odonata larvae as tools for the management and conservation of freshwater ecosystems.  相似文献
