Some animals reciprocate help, but the underlying proximate mechanisms are largely unclear. Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) have been shown to cooperate in a variant of the iterated prisoner's dilemma paradigm, yet it is unknown which sensory modalities they use. Visual information is often implicitly assumed to play a major role in social interactions, but primarily nocturnal species such as Norway rats may rely on different cues when deciding to reciprocate received help. We used an instrumental cooperative task to compare the test rats' propensity to reciprocate received help between two experimental conditions, with and without visual information exchange between social partners. Our results show that visual information is not required for reciprocal cooperation among social partners because even when it was lacking, test rats provided food significantly earlier to partners that had helped them to obtain food before than to those that had not done so. The mean decision speed did not differ between the two experimental conditions, with or without visual information. Social partners sometimes showed aggressive behaviour towards focal test individuals. When including this in the analyses to assess the possible role of aggression as a trigger of cooperation, aggression received from cooperators apparently reduced the cooperation propensity, whereas aggression received from defectors increased it. Hence, in addition to reciprocity, coercion seems to provide additional means to generate altruistic help in Norway rats.  相似文献

Explaining unconditional cooperation, such as donations to charities or contributions to public goods, continues to present a problem. One possibility is that cooperation can pay through developing a reputation that makes one more likely to be chosen for a profitable cooperative partnership, a process termed competitive altruism (CA) or reputation-based partner choice. Here, we show, to our knowledge, for the first time, that investing in a cooperative reputation can bring net benefits through access to more cooperative partners. Participants played a public goods game (PGG) followed by an opportunity to select a partner for a second cooperative game. We found that those who gave more in the PGG were more often selected as desired partners and received more in the paired cooperative game. Reputational competition was even stronger when it was possible for participants to receive a higher payoff from partner choice. The benefits of being selected by a more cooperative partner outweighed the costs of cooperation in the reputation building phase. CA therefore provides an alternative to indirect reciprocity as an explanation for reputation-building behaviour. Furthermore, while indirect reciprocity depends upon individuals giving preference to those of good standing, CA can explain unconditional cooperation.  相似文献

Intraspecific cooperation and interspecific mutualism often feature an asymmetry in the scope for exploitation. We investigate the evolution of indirect reciprocity in an asymmetric game, loosely modelled on interactions between cleaner fishes and clients, in which 'actors' can choose to help or to exploit a 'recipient' that approaches them, while recipients can only choose whether or not to approach an actor (based on the observation of its behaviour towards others). We show that when actors vary in state over time, in a manner that influences the potential gains from exploitation, an equilibrium is possible at which recipients avoid actors whom they have observed exploiting others in the past, and actors help when the potential gains from exploitation are low but choose to exploit when the potential gains are high. In this context, helping is favoured not because it elicits reciprocal altruism ('help so that you may be helped'), but because it facilitates profitable exploitation ('help so that you may gain the opportunity to harm'). The cost of helping one recipient is thereby recouped through exploitation of another. Indirect reciprocity is thus possible even in asymmetric interactions in which one party cannot directly 'punish' exploitation or 'reward' helping by the other.  相似文献

The nursing of non‐offspring is referred to as allonursing. Reciprocity is a hypothesized cause of allonursing, but previous studies have not strongly supported or found no evidence in support for this hypothesis. Biological market theory was applied to 25 reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) does and their calves to investigate allonursing reciprocity across bouts and within dyads and assess the diversity of allonursing partners. We also investigated whether variation in allonursing would be associated to relatedness within dyads. We recorded both the occurrence and the duration of 1027 successful allonursing solicitations. All does allonursed, and only three of the 25 calves were not observed being allonursed. Throughout the study, 234 allonursing dyadic pairs were observed. Does allonursed the calves of several does, but allonursing was not distributed evenly among all potential partners. Twenty does were members of at least 1 dyad with a high degree of reciprocity based on the number of allonursing bouts exchanged within the dyad. We found evidence of both relative and absolute allonursing reciprocity at the group level. Across bouts and within dyads, the reciprocal allonursing indexes varied greatly both for frequency and for duration, with an average tendency towards unidirectionality. Evidence of strong reciprocity within dyads was found in 32 dyads for number of allonursing bouts and in 25 dyads for duration of allonursing bouts. Across bouts and within dyads, the number of allonursing bouts received was not influenced by relatedness, allonursing bouts given or absolute rank difference. Allonursing was not interchanged for rank‐related benefits. Our results provide evidence of reciprocal allonursing at the group level, across bouts and within dyads, and reciprocal allonursing among chosen partners. Our results point to the usefulness of applying the biological market theory to allonursing and of considering allonursing as a tradable commodity, traded for itself, among chosen partners.  相似文献

目的探讨超早期高压氧(HBO)治疗对脊髓完全横断损伤模型血液生化及后肢运动功能的影响。方法 55只SD大鼠随机分为A组(假手术组,15只)、B组(模型组,20只)及C组(高压氧组,20只),A组仅行椎板切除术,其余2组均行T10椎板水平脊髓完全横向切断术。B、C组均予常规护理,C组于术后3 h置于动物舱内开始高压氧治疗,10 d一疗程,共3疗程。分别于建立模型后第1~6周末,用BBB运动功能评分法评价并比较两组大鼠后肢运动功能恢复程度,术后第6周过量麻醉处死大鼠,以40 g/L多聚甲醛行心室-主动脉灌注,取脊髓损伤区标本,光镜观察损伤脊髓的组织病理学改变。检测血钙(Ca)、血磷(P)、血清碱性磷酸酶(ALP)改变情况。结果 B、C两组大鼠术后第1~6周BBB运动功能评分逐渐增高,C组在3~6周末的BBB运动功能评分均明显高于B组。B组、C组血钙、血磷在术后1、3周高于A组,血清碱性磷酸酶(ALP)术后1、3周低于A组;C组血钙、血磷在术后5、6周低于B组。病理组织切片观察C组较B组组织水肿减轻,炎性细胞浸润减轻。结论超早期高压氧治疗能促进脊髓完全横断损伤大鼠后肢运动功能的部分恢复,降低血钙、血磷含量,对脊髓完全横断损伤大鼠具有保护和治疗作用。  相似文献

Certain inherent characteristics of individuals can determine both physiological and behavioural responses to environmental challenges, which could drive a correlation between levels of corticosterone (CORT), the most important stress hormone and behavioural profiles. Therefore, CORT level may mediate consistent behaviours along the shy/bold continuum, and thus, it could serve as a pleiotropic basis for behavioural syndromes. Moreover, behavioural responses to environmental challenges may have consequences for CORT concentrations, which would also result in a correlation between physiology and behaviours even without requiring pleiotropic mechanisms. Accordingly, we investigated the relationship between CORT and behaviour in free‐living male collared flycatchers, Ficedula albicollis, using recently developed field assays. More specifically, we characterised novel object avoidance, intraspecific aggression and risk‐taking in males and related these correlated behaviours to the concentration of CORT metabolites in droppings measured by enzyme immunoassay. Individuals with higher levels of excreted CORT metabolites had no consistently higher or lower behavioural scores along the shy/bold spectrum, as avoidance of novelty, aggression and risk‐taking were not systematically related to CORT metabolite concentrations in the same direction. Moreover, environmental challenges owing to the presence of a novel object, territorial intruder and a potential predator caused no elevation in the level of CORT metabolites. Therefore, we did not find correlative evidence for CORT driving correlated behaviours through pleiotropic effects or for particular behaviours during courtship causing elevation in CORT levels.  相似文献

We have carried out a quantitative study of the state of a neuropeptide Y (NPY)-ergic system of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (AN) in rats in the norm and in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mellitus. The NPY-containing objects were identified using an indirect immunofluorescent technique; a system of digital analysis of images and a special software were used. Analysis of the morphometric parameters of the NPY-immunopositive objects within the AN sections allowed us to classify in an automatic mode such objects as neurons of various sizes, fibers, and terminals, as well as to count the number of objects of each class. In addition, the fluorescent intensity of the objects under study (directly proportional to the concentration and amounts of NPY in these objects) was determined. On the basis of these parameters, criteria of the state of synthesis and secretion of NPY and NPY-ergic innervation in the AN subnuclei were proposed. In control animals, the greatest number of NPY-immunopositive neurons and total content of NPY in the neurons and terminals were observed in the ventrolateral and dorsomedial subnuclei of the AN (vl- and dmAN, respectively); this fact points to the high intensities of NPY synthesis and secretion in these structures. The greatest content of NPY in the nerve terminals within the vlAN zone is indicative of the highest intensity of NPY-ergic afferent influences on this subnucleus. It is concluded that the approach we proposed is adequate enough for integral quantitative estimation of the state of peptidergic systems. The development of STZ-induced diabetes mellitus caused changes in the NPY-ergic system in different AN subnuclei; such changes demonstrated certain specificity. In particular, an increase in the number of immunopositive neurons and the total content of NPY in the neurons of vlAN and the ventromedial AN subnucleus (vmAN), which is evidence in favor of intensification of synthesis of the neuropeptide, was not accompanied by an adequate rise in the NPY content in the terminals located in the subnucleus under study. The content of NPY in the eminentia medianus also decreased. The above data allow us to hypothesize that the NPY-ergic system of the AN under conditions of diabetes mellitus is functionally insufficient.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The parasitic nematode Trichostrongylus tenuis has a detrimental effect on red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) at the individual and population levels. Treatment using grit coated with the anthelmintic fenbendazole hydrochloride reduces parasite infection and increases grouse density. However, a frequent and low dose of anthelmintic increases selection pressure for parasite resistance, a serious practical and economic problem. We used an egg hatch assay to test resistance of T. tenuis from 12 moors in northern England, which differed in grit treatment intensity. The anthelmintic concentration that prevented 50% and 95% of T. tenuis eggs from hatching (ED50 and ED95, respectively) did not differ among moors and were not related to treatment. We suggest annual monitoring and responsible anthelmintic use to prevent resistance so that medicated grit continues to enhance red grouse management.  相似文献

Abstract: Intracerebral microdialysis combined with a sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay was used to monitor the neuronal release of somatostatin (somatostatin-like immunoreactivity, SLI) in the dorsal hippocampus of freely moving rats. The sensitivity of the radioimmunoassay was optimized to detect <1 fmol/ml. The basal concentration of SLI in 20-min dialysate fractions (5 μl/min) collected 24 h after probe implantation was stable over at least 200 min. The spontaneous efflux dropped by 54 ± 6.4% ( p < 0.05) when Ca2+ was omitted and 1 m M EGTA added to the Krebs-Ringer solution and by 65.5 ± 3.2% ( p < 0.05) in the presence of 1 μ M tetrodotoxin. Depolarizing concentrations of the Na+ channel opener veratridine (6.25, 25, 100 μ M ) induced 11 ± 2 ( p < 0.05), 17 ± 2 ( p < 0.05), and 21 ± 5 ( p < 0.01) fold increase in SLI concentration, respectively, during the first 20 min of perfusion. The effect of 100 μ M veratridine was blocked by coperfusion with 5 μ M tetrodotoxin ( p < 0.01) and reduced by 79% ( p < 0.01) in the virtual absence of Ca2+. Neuronal depolarization by 20 min of perfusion with Krebs-Ringer solution containing 25 and 50 m M KCl and proportionally lowered Na+ increased the dialysate SLI 4.4 ± 1 ( p < 0.05) and 17 ± 3 ( p < 0.01) fold baseline, respectively. Ten micromolar ouabain, a blocker of Na+,K+-ATPase, increased the dialysate SLI 15-fold baseline, on average ( p < 0.05), during 80 min of perfusion. The results demonstrate the suitability of brain microdialysis for monitoring the neuronal release of SLI and for studying its role in synaptic transmission.  相似文献

Studies have indicated that cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) gene expression is mediated by the translation of polycistronic 35S pregenomic RNA, but the involvement of some minor subgenomic RNA species is also suspected. We examined the involvement of the 35S promoter in the expression of CaMV open reading frames (ORFs) I and IV using both 35S RNA-driven and promoter-less ORF I- and ORF IV-β-glucuronidase (GUS) fusion constructs. In addition to the 35S promoter-dependent expression of both ORF I- and IV-GUS fusions, we detected the 35S promoter-independent expression of both fusion genes via subgenomic mRNAs, which were detected by Northern blotting in the protoplasts transfected with the 35S promoter-driven constructs as well as in those transfected with the promoter-less constructs. These results suggest the involvement of subgenomic RNAs in the expression of CaMV ORFs I and IV, and the operation of a dual strategy in the expression of two viral genes.  相似文献

Many polluted lakes in Europe are being restored and phosphorus concentrations have dropped dramatically in these lakes. We studied the genetic structure of Daphnia galeata over the past 30 years in Lake Greifensee, Switzerland, a period during which the phosphorus concentration in the lake reduced dramatically. Distinct genotypes of D. galeata were hatched from diapausing eggs extracted from six different time horizons in dated sediments. We compared juvenile growth, size and egg production of D. galeata reared on high-P and low-P algae to investigate whether Daphnia have evolved to grow better on phosphorus-limited algae. Our results indicate that life histories of D. galeata differed significantly between both food types. We also found significant clone effects for size and egg number. But we found no significant interaction between the depth from which the clones were selected and food quality. This means that we found no evidence for adaptive micro-evolution in response to P reduction in the lake. We discuss our results in relation to other studies that found evidence for adaptive micro-evolution in comparable time frames.  相似文献

Abstract : The NMDA-evoked acetylcholine release from striatal slices and synaptosomes was investigated in rats subjected to unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine into the substantia nigra. In slices prepared from the striatum contralateral to the lesion, the NMDA-evoked endogenous acetylcholine release was not significant at 10 μ M NMDA and maximal at 100 μ M NMDA (124 ± 19%). Conversely, in slices taken from the dopamine-depleted striatum, NMDA was effective even at 10 μ M (41 ± 4%), and at 100 μ M (196 ± 24%) efficacy was nearly doubled. In synaptosomes prepared from the contralateral striatum, NMDA maximally stimulated 20 m M KCl-induced endogenous acetylcholine release at 1 μ M (66 ± 5.1%), with lower concentrations (0.01-0.1 μ M ) being ineffective. Conversely, in synaptosomes prepared from the dopamine-depleted striatum, NMDA maximally enhanced the K+-evoked acetylcholine release at 0.1 μ M (118 ± 12.4%). Concentration-response curves of NMDA-evoked acetylcholine release in sham-operated rats could be superimposed on those observed in the contralateral striatum of the 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned animals. The present data support the view of an increased glutamatergic regulation of striatal acetylcholine release via pre- and postsynaptic NMDA receptors during Parkinson's disease.  相似文献

To demonstrate calpain involvement in neurodegeneration in rat spinal cord injury (SCI), we examined SCI segments for DNA fragmentation, neurons for calpain overexpression, neuronal death, and neuroprotection with calpain inhibitor (E-64-d). After the induction of SCI (40 g cm force) on T12, rats were treated within 15 min with vehicle (DMSO) or E-64-d. Sham animals underwent laminectomy only. Animals were sacrificed at 24 h, and five 1-cm long spinal cord segments were collected: two rostral (S1 and S2), one lesion (S3), and two caudal segments (S4 and S5). Agarose gel electrophoresis of DNA samples isolated from the SCI segments showed both random and internucleosomal DNA fragmentation indicating occurrence of necrosis as well as apoptosis mostly in the lesion, moderately in caudal, and slightly in rostral segments from SCI rats. Treatment of SCI rats with E-64-d (1 mg/kg) reduced DNA fragmentation in all segments. The lesion and adjacent caudal segments (S3 and S4) were further investigated by in situ double-immunofluorescent labelings that showed increase in calpain expression in neurons in SCI rats and decrease in calpain expression in SCI rats treated with E-64-d. In situ combined TUNEL and double-immunofluorescent labelings directly detected co-localization of neuronal death and calpain overexpressin in SCI rats treated with only vehicle while attenuation of neuronal death in SCI rats treated with E-64-d. Previous studies from our laboratory indirectly showed neuroprotective effect of E-64-d in SCI rats. Our current results provide direct in situ evidence for calpain involvement in neuronal death and neuroprotective efficacy of E-64-d in lesion and penumbra in SCI rats. Understanding the density-dependent processes that drive population demography in a changing world is critical in ecology, yet measuring performance–density relationships in long-lived mammalian species demands long-term data, limiting scientists' ability to observe such mechanisms. We tested performance–density relationships for an opportunistic omnivore, grizzly bears (Ursus arctos, Linnaeus, 1758) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, with estimates of body composition (lean body mass and percent body fat) serving as indicators of individual performance over two decades (2000–2020) during which time pronounced environmental changes have occurred. Several high-calorie foods for grizzly bears have mostly declined in recent decades (e.g., whitebark pine [Pinus albicaulis, Engelm, 1863]), while increasing human impacts from recreation, development, and long-term shifts in temperatures and precipitation are altering the ecosystem. We hypothesized that individual lean body mass declines as population density increases (H1), and that this effect would be more pronounced among growing individuals (H2). We also hypothesized that omnivory helps grizzly bears buffer energy intake from changing foods, with body fat levels being independent from population density and environmental changes (H3). Our analyses showed that individual lean body mass was negatively related to population density, particularly among growing-age females, supporting H1 and partially H2. In contrast, population density or sex had little effect on body fat levels and rate of accumulation, indicating that sufficient food resources were available on the landscape to accommodate successful use of shifting food sources, supporting H3. Our results offer important insights into ecological feedback mechanisms driving individual performances within a population undergoing demographic and ecosystem-level changes. However, synergistic effects of continued climate change and increased human impacts could lead to more extreme changes in food availability and affect observed population resilience mechanisms. Our findings underscore the importance of long-term studies in protected areas when investigating complex ecological relationships in an increasingly anthropogenic world.  相似文献

This study provides new data on Atlantic salmon Salmo salar life‐history traits across France. Using a long‐term recreational angling database (1987–2013) covering 34 rivers in three regions (genetic units), a decline in individual length, mass and a delayed adult return to French rivers was reported. Temporal similarities in trait variations between regions may be attributed to common change in environmental conditions at sea. The relative rate of change in phenotypic traits was more pronounced in early maturing fish [1 sea‐winter (1SW) fish] than in late maturing fish (2SW fish). Such contrasted response within populations highlights the need to account for the diversity in life histories when exploring mechanisms of phenotypic change in S. salar. Such detailed life‐history data on returning S. salar have not previously been reported from France. This study on French populations also contributes to reducing the gap in knowledge by providing further empirical evidence of a global pattern in S. salar across its distribution range. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that the observed changes in life‐history traits are primarily associated with environmental changes in the North Atlantic Ocean. They also emphasize the presence of less important, but still significant contrasts between region and life history.  相似文献
