Some prey may signal to deter pursuit by predators. Because deterrence is not needed when risk is low or useful when capture is imminent, most signaling should occur at intermediate risk. Probability of fleeing increases with risk for various risk factors. At low–intermediate risk, more frequent signaling should occur as assessed risk associated with risk factors increases. I examined the effects of three risk factors related to immobility and movement by a predator: standing distance (distance from prey to immobile predator), directions of walking, and turning by the predator. Risk is greater when the predator stands nearer, walks toward prey vs. retreating, and turns toward prey vs. away. In the lizard Callisaurus draconoides, which signals by elevating and waving its tail, signaling was more frequent before fleeing when I stood immobile at the shorter of two distances. All the lizards fled when I walked toward them, regardless of standing distance. Fewer fled when I moved away and only at the shorter standing distance. At the shorter standing distance, signal probability was high and did not differ between movement directions. At the longer standing distance, fewer lizards signaled and only when I moved toward them. Patterns of response of signaling and escape to combinations of standing distance and turn direction were qualitatively identical. When I turned away from lizards, none displayed or fled at the longer standing distance. At the shorter standing distance, probabilities of displaying and fleeing were higher when I turned toward than away from lizards. Standing distance affected signaling interactively with directions of movement and turning in manners readily interpretable from risk. Signaling was affected by risk associated with all factors, being absent or infrequent at both high‐ and low‐risk levels but frequent at intermediate risk, strengthening evidence for pursuit‐deterrent signaling.  相似文献

Many prey flee to refuges to escape from approaching predators, but little is known about how they select one among many refuges available. The problem of choice among alternative refuges has not been modeled previously, but a recent model that predicts flight initiation distance (FID = predator–prey distance when escape starts) for a prey fleeing to a refuge provides a basis for predicting which refuge should be chosen. Because fleeing is costly, prey should choose to flee to the refuge permitting the shortest FID. The model predicts that the more distant of two refuges can be favored if it is not too far and if the prey's trajectory to the farther refuge is more away from the predator than the direction to the nearer refuge. The difference in predicted FID between the farther and nearer refuges increases curvilinearly as the interpath angle for the farther refuge increases. The difference in predicted FID between the farther and nearer refuges increases linearly as the distance to the farther refuge increases. An isocline describing where nearer and farther refuges are equally favored shows a negative curvilinear relationship between interpath angle and prey distance to the farther refuge. In the region below the isocline, the farther refuge is favored, whereas above the isocline the prey should flee to the nearer refuge.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effects of Bt cotton leaves (Bollgard II), non-Bt cotton leaves, and a mixture of Bt+non-Bt cotton leaves on larval orientation behavior, survival and development of Trichoplusia ni in the laboratory. Results indicate that in a no-choice test, more first and fifth instars remained on Bt leaves than the third instars. All larvae that remained on the leaves gradually moved to leaf edge. In the choice between a Bt and a non-Bt leaf, more first instars moved to non-Bt leaves, whereas the third and fifth instars did not show significant difference in the first 8 h, but eventually more moved to non-Bt leaves. More first instars fed non-Bt leaves than third instars and fifth instars. When larvae fed Bt leaves, 100% of first instars, 92.7% of third instars and 51.1% of fifth instars died in 108 h. Once larvae pupated, >90% developed to adults. First and third instars that fed Bt leaves developed slower but their pupae developed faster than those on Bt+non-Bt leaves, whereas fifth instars developed similar on the three types of leaves. First and third instars that fed Bt+non-Bt leaves resulted in less heavy pupae than those fed non-Bt leaves; whereas the fifth instars that survived on Bt leaves produced lighter pupae.  相似文献

The orientation of sandhopper populations is adapted to the direction of the shoreline of the sandy beaches where they live; this behaviour was shown to be inherited in some Mediterranean populations. The question was open whether this behaviour could be adaptively modified in case of changing shoreline or passive transfer to a new differently oriented shoreline. The Cap Bon beaches in north‐eastern Tunisia are particularly interesting because they belong to two different Mediterranean Basins, the central and the eastern one, and their supra‐tidal populations do not come together. This work verified the effect of experimental change of the shoreline direction in two populations of Talitrus saltator from Cap Bon (north‐eastern Tunisia) through a displacement experiment. We transferred samples of T. saltator from two different localities (Korba and Ratiba) from their original beach to the familiar one and tested their solar and landscape orientation on the new beach that had an almost opposite direction with respect to the previous one. The comparisons of the results on the home beach and the new one confirmed the use of the solar compass in both populations, as well as the importance of landscape view and optical local sky factor in adjusting the escape direction. In both populations, an increase of scatter was observed on the new beach, especially when individuals could see the landscape. Also, a clear behavioural difference between the two populations was recorded, being Ratiba population not significantly oriented to the shoreline when tested on the unfamiliar beach, while Korba population maintained its home direction also on the new beach.  相似文献

Neonate ruminants produce distress calls when captured by a predator and discomfort milk begging calls when hungry. In many neonate ruminants, the distress and discomfort calls are high‐frequency vocalizations, in which the fundamental frequency is the key variable for recognition of their emotional arousal by caregivers. In contrast, in this study, we examine the low‐frequency open‐mouth distress and discomfort calls in the neonates of two species of wild‐living ungulates, which clearly highlight vocal tract resonances (formants). In the goitred gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa), the distress calls were higher in fundamental frequency (f0) and in the first and third formants than the discomfort calls. The accuracy of classifying individuals by variables of distress calls with discriminant function analysis (67%) was significantly lower than that of discomfort calls (85%). In the saiga (Saiga tatarica), only the third formant was higher in the distress calls than in the discomfort calls. The accuracy of classifying individuals by variables of distress calls (89%) did not differ significantly from that of discomfort calls (94%). Thus, the use of acoustic cues to vocal identity and to the degree of arousal differs between the two species. Calls were significantly more individualistic in the saiga, probably because this species lives in large herds and neonates use a ‘following’ antipredatory strategy, in which vocal individuality is crucial for mother–offspring communication. In contrast, goitred gazelles live in smaller groups and neonates use a ‘hiding’ antipredatory strategy. Accordingly, mothers can rely on additional environmental cues for spotting their young and this may decrease the necessity for individualization of the calls of neonates.  相似文献

Newly hatched larvae of the cabbage maggot, Delia radicum(L.), responded to various olfactory stimuli from their host plants and oriented themselves by the concentration gradients of these stimuli. Allyl and ethyl isothiocyanate (NCS), characteristic metabolites of host Brassicaceae, elicited positive taxis, but at a higher concentrations were repellent. Benzyl NCS was neutral; only at the highest concentration was it slightly repellent. Phenyl, cyclohexyl, and butyl NCS were repellent in the highest amounts used. Volatile compounds emanating prevailingly from surface parts of plants were both attractive (hexanol, hexanal, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, linalool) and repellent (hexylacetate, cis-3-hexenylacetate, benzaldehyde, myrcene, terpinene, -pinene, limonene). While the attractiveness was associated with NCS group and with unsaturated and saturated alcohols and aldehydes with an optimal sixcarbon chain length, the repellency was probably caused by a cyclized carbon chain and an acetate group. The activity of a compound was strongly influenced by its concentration.  相似文献

1D nanostructures of soft ferroelectric materials exert promising potential in the fields of energy harvesting and flexible and printed nanoelectronics. Here, improved piezoelectric properties, energy‐harvesting performance, lower coercive fields, and the polarization orientation of poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene) (PVDF‐TrFE) nanotubes synthesized with nanoconfinement effect are reported. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the nanotubes show the peak corresponding to the planes of (110)/(200), which is a signature of ferroelectric beta phase formation. Piezoforce spectroscopy measurements on the free‐standing horizontal nanotubes bundles reveal that the effective polarization direction is oriented at an inclination to the long axis of the nanotubes. The nanotubes exhibit a coercive field of 18.6 MV m?1 along the long axis and 40 MV m?1 (13.2 MV m?1 considering the air gap) in a direction perpendicular to the long axis, which is lower than the film counterpart of 50 MV m?1. The poled 200 nm nanotubes, with 40% reduction in poling field, give larger piezoelectric d33 coefficient values of 44 pm V?1, compared to poled films (≈20 pm V?1). The ferroelectric nanotubes deliver superior energy harvesting performance with an output voltage of ≈4.8 V and power of 2.2 μW cm?2, under a dynamic compression pressure of 0.075 MPa at 1 Hz.  相似文献

Fleeing from predators and moving into protective habitats are two common antipredator behaviours in the animal kingdom. Surprisingly, the relative cost/benefit trade‐off of each behavioural option has rarely been examined empirically. Here, we investigate the interplay between decisions surrounding escape behaviour and rocky microhabitat occupancy in lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens. In high‐risk clear‐water environments, sturgeon responded to danger by evoking an escape response and by seeking cover in rocky microhabitats. However, in low‐risk turbid environments, we found that sturgeon responded to danger by seeking cover in rocky microhabitats, but not fleeing to a significant degree. Cover‐seeking behaviour may therefore be a relatively low‐cost/high‐benefit antipredator strategy. These findings highlight the importance of structural habitat heterogeneity for prey animals in predator‐dominated landscapes.  相似文献

Abstract. An analysis of dispersal directions of the barn owl showed that all individuals immigrating to Hungary came from W‐NW‐N. It was shown that immigrating owls breed in Hungary. There is no prevailing direction in emigration from Hungary. The time of fledging does not influence the direction of movement and there is no difference between sexes concerning dispersal direction. The percentages of emigrating owls is greater than that of immigrating ones. These percentages did not differ in relation to most of the analysed countries (Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Poland and countries of the former Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia) but it differed in relation to Austria. The degree and direction of introgression into and from the transition zone and the recent distribution of the phenotypes are discussed based on the comparative analysis of published European data. These suggest that the subspecies Tyto alba alba and Tyto alba guttata disappear by introgression, to form a phenotypically very variable species.  相似文献

This study is aimed at elucidating the structure of a novel T‐cell adhesion inhibitor, cyclo(1,8)‐CPRGGSVC using one‐ and two‐dimensional (2D) 1H NMR and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The peptide is derived from the sequence of its parent peptide cIBR (cyclo(1,12)‐PenPRGGSVLVTGC), which is a fragment of intercellular adhesion molecule‐1 (ICAM‐1). Our previous results show that the cyclo(1,8)‐CPRGGSVC peptide binds to the LFA‐1 I‐domain and inhibits heterotypic T‐cell adhesion, presumably by blocking the LFA‐1/ICAM‐1 interactions. The structure of the peptide was determined using NMR and MD simulation in aqueous solution. Our results indicate that the peptide adopts type‐I β‐turn conformation at the Pro2‐Arg3‐Gly4‐Gly5 (PRGG) sequence. The β‐turn structure at the PRGG motif is well conserved in cIBR peptide and ICAM‐1 receptor, which suggests the importance of the PRGG motif for the biological activity of cyclo(1,8)‐CPRGGSVC peptide. Meanwhile, the Gly5‐Ser6‐Val7‐Cys8‐Cys1 (GSVCC) sequence forms a “turn‐like” random coil structure that does not belong to any structured motif. Therefore, cyclo(1,8)‐CPRGGSVC peptide has only one structured region at the PRGG sequence, which may play an important role in the binding of the peptide to the LFA‐1 I‐domain. The conserved β‐turn conformation of the PRGG motif in ICAM‐1, cIBR, and cyclo(1,8)‐CPRGGSVC peptides can potentially be used to design peptidomimetics. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Laboratory studies were conducted on the mating behavior of Rhabditis pellio males and females, which were maintained on a culture of Flavobacterium sp. bacteria isolated from earthworms. The mean time that elapsed between first contact of the sexes and their ultimate separation was 23.2 min. However, only 5.0 min were required for copulation (the interval during which male spicules were inserted into the female vagina). Three-day-old females that were permitted to mate once on their first day of adult life produced only one-third as many larvae as did females that were permitted unlimited mating. However, the longevity of females was found to decrease with an increase in the number of matings. Both males and females that were permitted to mate daily produced the greatest number of offspring when they were 4 days old. When the initiation of mating was delayed beyond their third day of life, the number of larvae produced by females decreased. In approximately one-half of the copulations, males failed to inseminate their female partners.  相似文献

Along the Canning Basin's Lennard Shelf in Western Australia, the 80‐km‐long Oscar Range is composed of folded Palaeoproterozoic quartzite and phyllite and surrounded by limestones of the Great Devonian Barrier Reef including reef complex, related back‐reef and lagoonal deposits of the Frasnian Pillara Limestone. The range represents an exhumed cluster of palaeoislands. Near the east end of the Oscar Range, a palaeoislet is encircled by the Pillara Limestone showing outward dips that dramatically shallow to expose nearly horizontal bedding planes offshore. From shore and outward, the facies zones observed in the Pillara Limestone include unfossiliferous laminated sediments followed by biozones with abundant Amphipora and Stachyodes, and domal stromatoporoids. An additional outermost lagoonal facies with a diverse molluscan fauna preserved in fine limestone/dolostone is described in this study. High‐spired Murchisonia in a time‐averaged assemblage with other gastropods, bivalves, brachiopods and scaphopods dominate this zone. Uneven distribution of biozones is due to intermittent shoals controlled by the complex relief of basement rocks or recent erosion into underlying layers. The orientations of dendroid stromatoporoids and high‐spired gastropods were analysed to appraise the dynamics of prevailing shoal‐water settings on the inner, more sheltered side of the Oscar Range facing the Devonian mainland to the north. Oscillatory wave action is interpreted as the main agent of transport. Palaeocurrent data for the lighter dendroid stromatoporoids suggest that fair‐weather prevailing winds originated from the SE. Pebble clasts, oncoids, bivalves and gastropods indicate episodes of wave agitation and stronger wind from a SE and southerly direction.  相似文献

2010年6月10-12日, 我国华南、 江南南部稻区出现了稻纵卷叶螟Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée)的大范围同期突增。为了明确此次同期突增的虫源性质, 进一步揭示稻纵卷叶螟大规模降落的大气动力学机制, 我们利用HYSPLIT轨迹分析平台、 地理信息系统ArcGIS和气象图形软件GrADS, 对稻纵卷叶螟的迁飞过程及大气背景场进行了个例研究。结果表明: (1)粤北大范围的稻纵卷叶螟突增以外地迁入种群为主, 部分为本地繁殖种群; (2)西南低空急流为稻纵卷叶螟的远距离迁飞提供了运载气流, 稻纵卷叶螟迁飞种群的集中降落是降雨造成的, 主降区位于雨区边缘的曲江、 紫金、 佛冈等地区, 降雨区的空间分布直接导致了曲江、 南雄地区降虫量的巨大差别; (3)稻纵卷叶螟迁入峰的主要虫源地分布在广东西南部稻区, 6月上旬以阳春为代表的虫源地的双季早稻进入扬花灌浆期 乳熟期, 叶片营养恶化, 稻纵卷叶螟处于成虫盛发期, 存在为粤北大规模迁入提供虫源的可能。  相似文献

In the Blackcap (Aves: Sylvia atricapilla), a widespread passerine noctural migrant, a “migratory divide” between SE- and SW-migrating populations exists in Central Europe at about 14° E and south of 52° N. The autumn migratory directions are known to have a genetic basis and are expressed in orientation cages in captivity. Migratory directions of birds in the contact zone between the two populations were studied by analysing ringing data and by testing three groups of hand-raised individuals in orientation cages. Available ringing data are insufficient to establish migratory directions in the contact zone north of the Alps. Hand-raised birds from south-west Germany and the most eastern part of Austria oriented SW and SE, respectively, confirming directions known from ringing recoveries. A sample of birds from the contact zone near Linz (Austria) oriented SW to NW (mean = 268°) and was significantly different from both adjoining populations. This contrasts with results of a cross-breeding experiment with mixed pairs of SW- and SE-migrants bred in captivity: The F1-offspring chose southerly directions, intermediate between both parental populations (Helbig, 1991). It is suggested, therefore, that a distinct subpopulation with a large fraction of birds wintering in the British Isles has established itself in the contact zone. Differences in directional choices between groups of siblings from this area indicate that intrapopulation genetic variability is present. This may have led to a rapid spread of the novel W-NW migratory direction, because north of the Alps strong selection seems to be acting against mixing of SE- with SW-migrating populations.  相似文献
