This study involved 48 subjects of both sexes with ages ranging from 22 years to 90 years. Computerised tomography was used to scan the right and left parotid gland. Gland mean density was calculated in Hounsfield units and regression graphs drawn. A significant fall in gland density was noted with subject age but no differences were noted between male and female subjects. A significant correlation was observed between the mean density of right and left glands in the same individuals. It is postulated that the fall in gland density is related an increase in fibro-fatty tissue within the gland. This study provides evidence that age related changes occur in the human parotid gland from youth to old age. This work supports the earlier findings of Scott's who studied the superficial lobe of the parotid gland histologically and found an increase in adipose tissue in this area of the gland with age.  相似文献

Humans and domestic animals in 14.94 square kilometers of rural West Bengal were intensively studied between 1967 and 1970. In 1977, 3.81 square kilometers (25.5%) of the same area was resurveyed and all humans and cattle enumerated. The human population has increased 10% from 1969 to 1977, but the total number of children in the younger age groups has actually diminished. The cattle population has decreased 3.7% since the 1969 census, but in 1977 there were 19% fewer working bullocks present. Other significant observations relative to the primary productivity and economics of the area are noted. This research was supported by a 1977–1978 Indo-American Fellowship Award from the Indo-U.S. Subcommission on Education and Culture.  相似文献

In 1967–1970, 3.81 km2 of a densely populated deltaic area of Hooghly district in West Bengal, India was intensively studied. This same area was resurveyed in 1977 and 1987. From 1977–1987, the human population has increased 10.1%, while the number of households has increased 25%. The total number of children below 10 years of age has diminished. The cattle have increased 26.5%. The number of working-age male cattle has dropped significantly with reliance, primarily on hand tractor power for field cultivation. The number of female cattle has increased substantially. Artificial insemination and the use of temperate breeds of bulls have had an obvious impact. Improvements in the general environment were observed. This research was supported by funding from a 1986–87 Fulbright Award. The excellent administrative support of the Fulbright staff in both the New Delhi and Calcutta offices of the United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) is acknowledged. Similar assistance was provided in the upland study area by Dr. B. R. Chatterjee and his entire family at one time or another. Declines in survival and performance with advancing age (senescence) have been widely documented in natural populations, but whether patterns of senescence across traits reflect a common underlying process of biological ageing remains unclear. Senescence is typically characterized via assessments of the rate of change in mortality with age (actuarial senescence) or the rate of change in phenotypic performance with age (phenotypic senescence). Although both phenomena are considered indicative of underlying declines in somatic integrity, whether actuarial and phenotypic senescence rates are actually correlated has yet to be established. Here we present evidence of both actuarial and phenotypic senescence from a decade‐long longitudinal field study of wild insects. By tagging every individual and using continuous video monitoring with a network of up to 140 video cameras, we were able to record survival and behavioral data on an entire adult population of field crickets. This reveals that both actuarial and phenotypic senescence vary substantially across 10 annual generations. This variation allows us to identify a strong correlation between actuarial and phenotypic measures of senescence. Our study demonstrates age‐related phenotypic declines reflected in population level mortality rates and reveals that observations of senescence in a single year may not be representative of a general pattern.  相似文献

The Muslim population of the Chaltaberia village in the district of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal is divided into several wards (paras) inhabited by people of specific surnames. The frequency of endogamous marriages within surnames is greater than randomly expected ones. An incomplete reproductive isolation is observed among the five dominant surnames. Consanguineous marriages occur more often outside the village than inside. Leaving out marriages between long distances, a small median distance of 6.36 km is recorded. The neighborhood area works up to be 552.2 km2, which is rather small. There is an underlying process of breeding isolation by distance. A generation length of 21 years has been used for examining the temporal change in consanguineous marriages and inbreeding, which generally appears to increase. There is a general trend of decline in consanguineous marriages towards the southern part of West Bengal and eastern part of Assam among the Bengalee Muslims. The frequency of consanguineous marriages is 7.3% out of all marriages (N=1153) that have taken place in six generations in the population. The first cousin marriage is nearly 50% of all marriages. Patrilineal marriages are common in marriages between second and third cousins. An increase of consanguineous marriages in the younger generation was observed, but the total frequency agrees with a general trend of a decline in the frequency of consanguineous marriages among the Muslims in this part of India.  相似文献

To study the genetic epidemiology of blood pressure (BP), data on 78 families were collected from a sedentary agricultural population of eastern India. The general levels of both systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures are found to be low (mean SBP = 106.41 mm Hg; mean DBP = 63.94 mm Hg). Trends of blood pressures with age are similar to those reported earlier (e.g., in the Framingham study). Environmental variables--e.g., occupation and tobacco use--do not have any direct significant effect on blood pressure variability in this population. Path analysis of family data shows a highly significant familial aggregation and yields a genetic heritability (maximum) estimate of 0.3 for both SBP and DBP. Sib-sib and mother-child correlation estimates are, respectively, 0.3 and 0.25. Father-child correlation estimates are 0.13 for SBP and near zero for DBP. A pseudopolygenic model yields the best fit to the data on SBP, while for DBP a proper resolution of various models considered could not be obtained.  相似文献

1. A simple, low‐cost approach to estimating population ageing was introduced based on a modified version of the captive cohort method – a technique developed earlier (Carey et al., Aging Cell, 7 , 426–437, 2008) in which information on the remaining lifespans of live‐captured medflies of unknown age is used to estimate the overall population age structure. 2. To test this approach approximately 1200 medflies near Volos, Greece were live captured from daily sampling over a 3‐month field season. 3. This simplified method reported: (i) an extraordinary post‐capture longevity of wild medflies in early season (>200 days in longest lived); (ii) a decrease of 50–75 days in the mean longevity from early‐season to late‐season flies; (iii) seasonality of frailty as indicated by the shorter‐lived flies in late autumn; (iv) cessation of fly emergence in late season as indicated by the absence of long‐lived individuals (indicating newly emerged at capture) sampled in the autumn; and (v) increase in mean age from about 20 days in early season to approximately 60 days in late season. 4. The applications of this simplified captive cohort method are discussed, including its use in the analysis of insect vector populations, Drosophila ecology and ageing in the wild, demographic toxicology, and age bias in sampling.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2012.00656.x Assessing changes in oral health‐related quality of life and its factors in community‐dwelling older Brazilians Objective: To describe changes in oral health‐related quality of life and to evaluate the associations of these changes in community‐dwelling older people. Materials and methods: In this longitudinal study a representative sample of 872 older people, living in Brazil, was evaluated during 2004. The follow‐up was carried out during 2008, with 587 older persons evaluated. A questionnaire assessing socio‐demographic information, health history, oral health‐impact profile and number of natural teeth was used. Changes in oral health‐related quality of life were categorized as improvement or deterioration. Data analysis was performed using a hierarchical approach based in a conceptual framework. A hierarchal approach was carried out using Poisson regressions. Results: Older persons living in rural areas, those who reported brushing once a day or less and older persons with fewer natural teeth had an increased chance of reporting deterioration in oral health‐related quality of life. Women and participants who received a minimum wage of less than US$219.50 were more likely to report improvement in oral health‐related quality of life. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that changes in the oral health‐related quality of life are influenced by many of the variables that were included in the conceptual framework.  相似文献

The problem was reexamined whether there is a relationship between the AB0 blood groups and incidence, severity and outcome of smallpox. In persons suffering from smallpox, and living in rural areas of West Bengal and Bihar, India, severity and outcome of the disease were registered, and the AB0 blood groups were determined. Healthy siblings were used as controls for incidence. Four series were available:

Data on anthropometric and physiological parameters were collected as a part of an ongoing biomedical research project on 197 adult Oraon agricultural labourers of the Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal, India. The analysis of the present data focuses attention towards the nature and extent of changes in adulthood in respect of anthropometric and physiological traits. The results reveal that the height increases up to 35 years of age, then declines, weight decreases after 40 years of age, although males and females do not show similar results. Physiological parameters on the other hand reveal that the blood pressure increases with age and strength parameters i.e. grip strength and back strength declines after the age of 25 years or so. However, no generalization can be made out of this, because of the cross-sectional nature of the present study.  相似文献

In view of the predominance of acidic pH levels in lateritic soils and of the importance of this soil property on growth and distribution of blue-green algae or cyanobacteria (CB), the effect of lime application on the reduction of acidity and subsequently on growth and some related physiological properties of CB have been studied. Four soils with varying pH levels were used for this purpose and three lime treatments corresponding to 0,50 and 100% lime requirement were applied to each of them. The soils thus treated were incubated under submerged condition in an illuminated chamber for 6 weeks and were drawn at weekly intervals for studies of the number, fresh mass and chlorophyll content of the developed algal mass. Increase of the pH value of the soil through application of lime improved growth and relevant physiological properties of the CB.  相似文献

Mutation accumulation (MA) and antagonistic pleiotropy (AP) have each been hypothesized to explain the evolution of 'senescence' or deteriorating fitness in old age. These hypotheses make contrasting predictions concerning age dependence in inbreeding depression in traits that show senescence. Inbreeding depression is predicted to increase with age under MA but not under AP, suggesting one empirical means by which the two can be distinguished. We use pedigree and life-history data from free-living song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) to test for additive and interactive effects of age and individual inbreeding coefficient (f) on fitness components, and thereby assess the evidence for MA. Annual reproductive success (ARS) and survival (and therefore reproductive value) declined in old age in both sexes, indicating senescence in this short-lived bird. ARS declined with f in both sexes and survival declined with f in males, indicating inbreeding depression in fitness. We observed a significant agexf interaction for male ARS (reflecting increased inbreeding depression as males aged), but not for female ARS or survival in either sex. These analyses therefore provide mixed support for MA. We discuss the strengths and limitations of such analyses and therefore the value of natural pedigreed populations in testing evolutionary models of senescence.  相似文献

Aeromycoflora studies above an “Aman” variety of paddy (Oryza saliva L.) were carried out for two consecutive seasons, in 1990 and 1991, in the vicinity of Barrackpore, West Bengal, by means of the culture plate exposure technique. A more or less uniform spore concentration was observed during the early part of the vegetative stages in 1990 with an abrupt increase and peak during the maximum vegetative growth period. In 1991, a uniform spore count was found up until the flowering stages. A gradual increase in spore count after flowering was recorded in both seasons with the highest peaks during harvesting, followed by a sudden decrease after the harvest. The dominant genera isolated were Aspergillus, Currularia, Cladosporium and Penicillium. Aspergillus appeared in high concentrations from the very beginning of the crop season up to the flowering stages, with a gradual fall after flowering, while Cladosporium showed the reverse pattern. Currularia and Penicillium occurred regularly throughout the crop season.

Phytopathogenic types were represented by Helminthosporium oryzae, Fusarium, Altemaria and Nigrospora. Helminthosporium oryzae appeared in the air when the plants attained appreciable vegetative growth, being seen as “brown spots” on the foliage, and reaching peak concentration during harvesting. Fusarium in contrast to Altemaria appeared regularly in the air except during the later part of vegetative growth. Nigrospora was recorded only occasionally. A considerable number of “Sterile Forms” were present throughout both seasons.  相似文献

An analysis of mollusc communities collected at 272 stations was carried out, using multivariate statistical methods. The stations ranged from the sources to the lower reaches of large rivers. Nine malacotypes succeeded each other along this upstream-downstream gradient; comments are given regarding the composition of their communities. The organisation of the 52 mollusc species included corresponds to that of a theoretical river, representative of the French hydrographic system. The reduction of the abundance and of species richness in the lower reaches of large rivers is discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Reconstruction of life history variables of fossil hominids on the basis of dental development requires understanding of and comparison with the pattern and timing of dental development among both living humans and pongids. Whether dental development among living apes or humans provides a better model for comparison with that of Plio-Pleistocene hominids of the genus Australopithecus remains a contentious point. This paper presents new data on chimpanzees documenting developmental differences in the dentitions of modern humans and apes and discusses their significance in light of recent controversies over the human or pongid nature of australopithecine dental development. Longitudinal analysis of 299 lateral head radiographs from 33 lab-reared chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) of known chronological age allows estimation of means and standard deviations for the age at first appearance of 8 developmental stages in the mandibular molar dentition. Results are compared with published studies of dental development among apes and with published standards for humans. Chimpanzees are distinctly different from humans in two important aspects of dental development. Relative to humans, chimpanzees show advanced molar development vis a vis anterior tooth development, and chimpanzees are characterized by temporal overlap in the calcification of adjacent molar crowns, while humans show moderate to long temporal gaps between the calcification of adjacent molar crowns. In combination with recent work on enamel incremental markers and CAT scans of developing dentitions of Plio-Pleistocene hominids, this evidence supports an interpretation of a rapid, essentially “apelike” ontogeny among australopithecines. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
