In the present paper the ability of calibration free laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) as a quality control tool to monitor the composition of different minerals present in food supplement samples belonging to Indian brands (brand-A and brand-B) has been demonstrated. LIBS spectra of these two food supplements (brand-A and brand-B) available in the form of tablet have been recorded. As reported by manufacturers of these two food supplements, LIBS spectra of brand-A contains the spectral signatures of minerals like Ca, Mg, C, P, Zn, Fe, Cu, and Cr whereas LIBS spectra of brand-B shows the presence of spectral lines like Ca, Mg and C. The spectral signatures of Na and K are also found in both brands whereas spectral signature of Ti is observed only in brand-B but these elements are not mentioned on the nutritional label of the brands. The quantitative analysis of mineral contents in food supplements has been done using CF-LIBS for brand A and brand B to verify the content of the minerals reported by the manufacturer of the food supplements. Our results show that Ca and Mg are the main matrix elements of these brands. The concentration of minor and trace elements estimated using CF-LIBS technique is found in agreement with the reported nutritional values of both the brands. The concentration of major elements Ca and Mg are also estimated from Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy which is in close agreement with CF-LIBS result.  相似文献

The risk posed by the quantity of heavy metal lead present in Ca supplements is of grave concern. Some lead levels have been measured up to the extent of regulatory limit set by the United States. Calcium supplements inevitably get contaminated with lead as both are naturally occurring elements having the same charge density. Therefore, it is imperative to indicate the level of this toxic metal in these supplements in order to create awareness among consumers. The calcium in the supplements is derived from natural as well as synthetic/refined sources (chelated or non-chelated). In this study, a sophisticated analytical technique, atomic absorption spectrometer (both with FAAS and GFAAS modes of atomization), was used for the purpose of analyzing Pb contents in 27 commonly used Ca supplements manufactured by different national and multinational companies. The daily intake of lead through these supplements was calculated. Only 10% of the calcium supplements analyzed met the criteria of acceptable Pb levels (1.5 μg/daily dose) in supplements/consumer products set by the United States. It was also found that Pb intake was highest in chelated calcium supplements whereas lowest through calcium supplements with vitamin D formulation. The Pb concentration in calcium supplements was significantly increased (p < 0.001) according to their composition. In order to validate our results from the study conducted, IAEA-certified reference material (animal bone, H-5) was analyzed for Pb levels. The limit of detection of the method used was 0.05 μg/g and a 95% lead recovery of IAEA-certified reference material (animal bone, H-5).  相似文献

Flux balance analysis and constraint based modeling have been successfully used in the past to elucidate the metabolism of single cellular organisms. However, limited work has been done with multicellular organisms and even less with humans. The focus of this paper is to present a novel use of this technique by investigating human nutrition, a challenging field of study. Specifically, we present a steady state constraint based model of skeletal muscle tissue to investigate amino acid supplementation''s effect on protein synthesis. We implement several in silico supplementation strategies to study whether amino acid supplementation might be beneficial for increasing muscle contractile protein synthesis. Concurrent with published data on amino acid supplementation''s effect on protein synthesis in a post resistance exercise state, our results suggest that increasing bioavailability of methionine, arginine, and the branched-chain amino acids can increase the flux of contractile protein synthesis. The study also suggests that a common commercial supplement, glutamine, is not an effective supplement in the context of increasing protein synthesis and thus, muscle mass. Similar to any study in a model organism, the computational modeling of this research has some limitations. Thus, this paper introduces the prospect of using systems biology as a framework to formally investigate how supplementation and nutrition can affect human metabolism and physiology.  相似文献

Anticholinergics, specifically antimuscarinic agents, are the most common medications prescribed for overactive bladder (OAB). The most common side effects of these agents are dry mouth and constipation, although other more concerning effects include changes in blood pressure, pulse rate, or heart rhythm when treatment is initiated. Herbal treatments are an increasingly popular alternative for treating OAB. A 2002 survey of US adults aged ≥ 18 years conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that 74.6% of those with OAB had used some form of complementary and alternative medicine. The World Health Organization estimates that 80% of the world’s population presently uses herbal medicine for some aspect of primary health care. Women were more likely than men to use complementary and alternative medicine. The authors review the most commonly used herbal medications for OAB.Key words: Overactive bladder, Herbal medicine, Gosha-jinki-gan, Hachi-mi-jio-gan, Buchu (Barosma betuline), Cleavers (Galium aparine), Cornsilk (Zea mays), Horsetail (Equisetum), Ganoderma lucidum, Resinferatoxin, CapsaicinOveractive bladder (OAB) is defined by the International Continence Society as a syndrome that includes urgency, with or without urge incontinence, frequency, and nocturia. The prevalence of OAB is estimated to range between 9% and 16%, depending on the population studied.13 As symptoms of OAB increase with age, they can negatively impact quality of life (QoL).The cost of treating OAB is estimated to be approximately $12 billion annually in the United States.4 This estimate accounts for the direct cost of management, including protective undergarments, bedside commodes, and medical treatment, as well as indirect costs, such as those resulting from urinary tract infections and falls due to urgency and nocturia. There are also additional intangible costs that cannot be estimated such as pain, suffering, and poor QoL.The negative impact on health and the sense of well-being as well as the impairment in the ability to perform activities of daily living, has been well-documented. For example, elderly patients with OAB and subsequent incontinence are more likely to be admitted to nursing homes. Thom and colleagues reported a twofold increased risk of admission to a nursing facility for patients with incontinence.5 Urinary incontinence can also lead to anxiety, negative self-image, and isolation.4 Other problems associated with OAB include skin ulcerations and urinary tract infections. Nocturia is common with OAB and ranks among the most bothersome of lower urinary tract symptoms.6 In addition to sleep interruption and resulting fatigue, patients with nocturia may be more likely to suffer from falls and fractures, which are associated with high mortality in elderly patients. Approximately 33% of elderly people do not survive beyond 1 year after a hip fracture.7The impact of OAB was clearly reported in the National Overactive Bladder Evaluation (NOBLE) study.8 The NOBLE study represented a computer-assisted telephone interview survey that used health-related QoL (HRQoL) questionnaires to compare continent OAB patients, with incontinent OAB patients, and control groups in a nested case-control fashion. In this study, OAB was associated with lower QoL scores, higher scores on depression, and poorer sleep quality when compared with control subjects.8 Note that, although the prevalence of OAB increases with age, it should not be considered a normal consequence of aging.Anticholinergics, specifically antimuscarinic agents, represent the most common medications prescribed for OAB. The most common side effects are dry mouth and constipation.9,10 Other more concerning side effects include changes in blood pressure, pulse rate, or heart rhythm when treatment is initiated. Additional adverse events (AEs) include memory loss, cognitive impairment, and balance problems. Thus, alternative therapies not involving standard medications and their associated risks are sought by patients to alleviate symptoms of OAB.Herbal treatments represent an increasingly popular alternative for treating OAB. A 2002 survey of US adults aged ≥ 18 years conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated 74.6% of those with OAB had used some form of complementary and alternative medicine. The World Health Organization estimates that 80% of the world’s population presently uses herbal medicine for some aspect of primary health care. Women were more likely than men to use complementary and alternative medicine.10,11 We review the most commonly used herbal medications used for OAB.  相似文献

Physical activity in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) is hindered because of the high risk of glycemic imbalances. A recently proposed algorithm (named Ecres) estimates well enough the supplemental carbohydrates for exercises lasting one hour, but its performance for prolonged exercise requires validation. Nine T1DM patients (5M/4F; 35–65 years; HbA1c 54±13 mmol·mol-1) performed, under free-life conditions, a 3-h walk at 30% heart rate reserve while insulin concentrations, whole-body carbohydrate oxidation rates (determined by indirect calorimetry) and supplemental carbohydrates (93% sucrose), together with glycemia, were measured every 30 min. Data were subsequently compared with the corresponding values estimated by the algorithm. No significant difference was found between the estimated insulin concentrations and the laboratory-measured values (p = NS). Carbohydrates oxidation rate decreased significantly with time (from 0.84±0.31 to 0.53±0.24 g·min-1, respectively; p<0.001), being estimated well enough by the algorithm (p = NS). Estimated carbohydrates requirements were practically equal to the corresponding measured values (p = NS), the difference between the two quantities amounting to –1.0±6.1 g, independent of the elapsed exercise time (time effect, p = NS). Results confirm that Ecres provides a satisfactory estimate of the carbohydrates required to avoid glycemic imbalances during moderate intensity aerobic physical activity, opening the prospect of an intriguing method that could liberate patients from the fear of exercise-induced hypoglycemia.  相似文献

Most European people have selenium (Se) intake inferior to recommended values that are considered necessary to ensure the beneficial action of antioxidant selenoproteins. People could therefore tend to have recourse to Se-enriched food supplements (FS) aiming to increase their Se body level. On the Belgian market, three main types of Se-rich FS are available: Se-enriched yeast, selenate-based FS, and selenite-based FS. In the present work, in vitro tests imitating gastrointestinal digestion and intestinal absorption were used to determine the bioaccessible and bioavailable fractions of Se present in one specimen of each category of FS. The aim of the study was to verify to which extent the difference in Se speciation could influence the efficiency of FS for enhancing the human Se status. Results indicated that differences exist in both bioaccessibility and bioavailability between the three types of FS, and that these differences could be related, at least partially, to the Se species profile. Overall bioavailability of the three FS was low (maximum 14 % of the original Se content). Among the three samples, the selenate-based FS produced the highest fraction of bioavailable Se, followed by Se-yeast, and finally by the selenite-based FS for which Se was almost not available at all. These results confirm the low availability of inorganic Se but were somewhat unexpected regarding the yeast-based FS since Se-rich yeasts are usually reported to contain an important fraction of available Se.  相似文献

Background

Overlapping meta-analyses on the same topic are now very common, and discordant results often occur. To explore why discordant results arise, we examined a common topic for overlapping meta-analyses- vitamin D supplements and fracture.

Methods and Findings

We identified 24 meta-analyses of vitamin D (with or without calcium) and fracture in a PubMed search in October 2013, and analysed a sample of 7 meta-analyses in the highest ranking general medicine journals. We used the AMSTAR tool to assess the quality of the meta-analyses, and compared their methodologies, analytic techniques and results. Applying the AMSTAR tool suggested the meta-analyses were generally of high quality. Despite this, there were important differences in trial selection, data extraction, and analytical methods that were only apparent after detailed assessment. 25 trials were included in at least one meta-analysis. Four meta-analyses included all eligible trials according to the stated inclusion and exclusion criteria, but the other 3 meta-analyses “missed” between 3 and 8 trials, and 2 meta-analyses included apparently ineligible trials. The relative risks used for individual trials differed between meta-analyses for total fracture in 10 of 15 trials, and for hip fracture in 6 of 12 trials, because of different outcome definitions and analytic approaches. The majority of differences (11/16) led to more favourable estimates of vitamin D efficacy compared to estimates derived from unadjusted intention-to-treat analyses using all randomised participants. The conclusions of the meta-analyses were discordant, ranging from strong statements that vitamin D prevents fractures to equally strong statements that vitamin D without calcium does not prevent fractures.

Conclusions

Substantial differences in trial selection, outcome definition and analytic methods between overlapping meta-analyses led to discordant estimates of the efficacy of vitamin D for fracture prevention. Strategies for conducting and reporting overlapping meta-analyses are required, to improve their accuracy and transparency.  相似文献
