OBJECTIVE--To assess level of contamination of neckwear worn by gynaecologists and obstetricians during routine working week. DESIGN--Multicentre randomised double blind crossover trial. Participants wore the same conventional ties for three days in one week and bow ties for the same period in second week. SETTING--Two teaching and three district general hospitals in the midlands, Wales, and north England. SUBJECTS--15 registrars and senior registrars. INTERVENTIONS--A swab soaked in sterile saline was taken from specific area on ties at end of first and third working days and sent in transport medium for culture on chocolatised blood and MacConkey agar for 48 hours. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Level of bacteriological growth assessed semiquantitatively (0 for no contamination; for heavy contamination) after swabs had been cultured. At end of study the participants completed a questionnaire to assess their attitude toward wearing different types of necktie. RESULTS--12 doctors (80%) completed the study. Although bow ties were significantly less contaminated at end of first working day (z = -2.354, p = 0.019), this difference was not maintained; there was no difference in level of contamination on third day. Level of contamination did not increase between first and third day of wearing the same garment. One of the 10 doctors who returned the questionnaire found the bow tie very uncomfortable. All participants would consider wearing a bow tie if it proved to be less contaminated than a conventional tie. CONCLUSIONS--Although a significant difference in contamination was established between conventional and bow ties on first day of study, this difference was not confirmed on third day and there is unlikely to be any real association between tie type and bacterial contamination. Because of its negative image and difficulty to tie, the bow tie will probably remain a minority fashion.  相似文献

The present experiment investigated the effects of skin pressure by foundation garments (brassiere plus girdle) worn during wakefulness on the circadian rhythms of core temperature and endocrine secretion. Eight healthy females (18–23 yrs) maintaining regular sleep-wake cycles for a week prior to participation in the experiment served as participants. The experiments were performed from June to August, 1999, using a bioclimatic chamber controlled at 26.5 ± 0.2°C and 62 ± 3% RH. Ambient light intensity was controlled at 500 lx from 07:30 h to 17:30 h, 100 lx from 17:30 h to 19:30 h, 20 lx from 19:30 h to 23:30 h and there was total darkness from 23:30 h to 07:30 h. The experiment lasted for 58?h over 3 nights. The participant rose at 07:30?h in the morning of the first day and retired at 23:30 h, adhering to a set schedule for 24 h but without wearing foundation garments. From 07:30 h to 23:30 h of the second day the participant wore foundation garments but did not wear foundation garments during the sleep. Rectal and leg skin temperatures were continuously measured throughout the experiment. Urine was collected every 4 h for the analysis of catecholamines. Skin pressure applied by the foundation garments was in the range 11–17 gf/cm2 at the regions of abdomen, hip, chest and back. The main results were as follows: Rectal temperature was significantly higher (p < 0.01) during wakefulness, but significantly lower (p < 0.01) during sleep with than without foundation garments. Furthermore, the amplitude of rectal temperature was larger with than without foundation garments (p < 0.033). Urinary noradrenaline was mostly lower with foundation garments throughout the day and night. The results suggest that skin pressure by foundation garments worn during wakefulness could influence the level of core body temperature and noradrenaline secretion not only during wakefulness, but also during sleep.  相似文献

The experiment investigated the effects of skin pressure by clothing on whole gut transit time and amount of feces. Comparisons of transit time and amount of feces were taken between 6 young female adults with and without a girdle. The skin pressure applied by a girdle (mean +/- SD) on participant's waist, abdomen and hip region was 16.6 +/- 7.80 mmHg, 17.1 +/- 4.5 mmHg and 12.6 +/- 5.0 mmHg, respectively. The difference of skin pressure with and without a girdle was about 10 mmHg. During each experimental period of 4 days with and without a girdle, the whole gut transit time and amount of feces were measured. The whole gut transit time of each day was determined as the time between the oral intake of each day's markers and their first appearance in the stool. The whole gut transit times of the markers taken on the first day were significantly prolonged (p < 0.05) and those of the markers taken on the second day tended to be prolonged for participant using a girdle (p < 0.1). The whole gut transit time of the markers taken on the third day could not be compared because they were not excreted into the stool. The cumulative increases of feces on the third day and the fourth day were significantly reduced with a girdle (p < 0.05). These results indicate that the skin pressure by clothing has an effect on whole gut transit time and the amount of feces.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of exercise on iron metabolism in horses. Four horses were walked on a mechanical walker for 1 wk (pre-exercise). They then performed moderate exercise on a high-speed treadmill in the first week of the exercise and relative high in the second week and high in the third week. Serum iron was significantly lower in the third week of exercise than in the pre-exercise. Transferrin saturation (TS) was significantly lower in the first and third weeks of exercise than in the pre-exercise. Serum haptoglobin was significantly lower in the first week of exercise than in the pre-exercise and further significantly lower in the second and third weeks than in the first. The packed cell volume did not change during the experiment. The exercise significantly increased the apparent absorption of iron. Urinary iron excretion did not change throughout the experiment. Sweat iron loss did not change during the exercise. The exercise significantly increased iron balance. We considered that hemolysis is induced by moderate exercise and is further enhanced by heavy exercise, which decreases serum iron and TS. However, the increase in iron absorption compensates for the adverse effect of exercise on iron status. Therefore, exercise does not induce anemia in horses.  相似文献

The main results were as follows: (1) Rectal temperatures were significantly higher throughout the day and night when wearing foundation garments. (2) The nocturnal level of salivary melatonin measured at 03:30 was 115.2 +/- 40.4 pg/mL (mean +/- SEM, N = 10) without and 51.3 +/- 18.4 pg/mL (mean +/- SEM, N = 10) with foundation garments. (3) Mean urinary noradrenaline excretion was significantly lower throughout the day and night when wearing foundation garments (p < .05), but mean urinary adrenaline excretion was not different. The results suggest that skin pressure by clothing could markedly suppress the nocturnal elevation of salivary melatonin, resulting in an increase of rectal temperature.  相似文献

In order to reveal the influence of clothing skin pressure on digestion of food through the gastrointestinal tract, we examined the absorption of dietary carbohydrate and orocecal transit time of a test meal by means of a breath hydrogen test on 7 healthy young women. In this experiment, we collected breath samples from the participants wearing loose-fitting experimental garment on the second day of the experiment and from the same participants but wearing an additional tight-fitting girdle on the following day for 16 hours and 9 hours, respectively. Skin pressure applied by a girdle on participant's waist, abdomen and hip region was 15.5 +/- 0.4 mmHg (mean +/- SE), 11.0 +/- 0.2 mmHg, and 13.6 +/- 0.6 mmHg, respectively, and the values were 2-3 times larger than those of the experimental garment. The hydrogen concentration vs. time curve showed that breath hydrogen levels at its peaks (15:00, 15:30, 16:00, 16:30, and 17:00 hr) on the third day of the experiment were significantly higher than those of the corresponding time on the second day (p < 0.05 at 17:00 and 15:00, p < 0.01 at 15:00, 16:00 and 16:30). Consequently, significantly pronounced breath hydrogen excretion was observed under the "pressure" clothing condition (p < 0.01). On the other hand, the transit time of the test meal for the subjects wearing a girdle did not differ significantly from that for the subjects wearing the garment of less pressure (270 +/- 18 minutes and 263 +/- 21 minutes, respectively). These results indicate that the clothing skin pressure has an inhibitory effect on the absorption of dietary carbohydrate in the small intestine, but no effect on the orocecal transit time of a meal.  相似文献

We see in this study the effect of high intensity exercise (90% VO2 max) in pregnant rats and their offspring depending on the length of pregnancy. The findings were compared with those obtained for sedentary pregnant rats and non-pregnant rats for similar exercise. This allowed for analysing the isolated effects of exercise (against the sedentary non-pregnant rat control group), of pregnancy and of the interaction between the two factors. For checking the effect of the length of pregnancy, each group of rats was subdivided into those with pregnancy terminated or sacrificed on the seventh, fourteenth or twentieth day of the experiment. VO2 max, post-exertion blood lactic acid level, body weight gain, food intake, feed efficiency, glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, total protein and albumin plasmatic concentrations in adult rats, and weight and number of offspring of pregnant rats were determined. Pregnancy increased weight gain and feed efficiency from the first week of the study, accompanied by a greater food intake (from the twelfth day). In the group of pregnant rats subjected to exercise, there was a reduction in weight gain percentage and feed efficiency in the first and third weeks, staying the same in the second week. A greater food intake during the period accompanied this recovery in the second week. In the group of non-pregnant rats subjected to exercise, food intake did not vary. As the weight gain percentage was less in relation to the non-pregnant control group, feed efficiency decreased. Pregnancy induced a drop in blood sugar level starting in the second week, and the exercise performed during pregnancy did not change this behavior. Pregnancy produced, however, an increase in plasmatic concentration of triglycerides and total cholesterol during the third week of pregnancy. Exercise performed by pregnant rats also did not change this behavior, but the increase observed in the third week was less. Exercise performed by non-pregnant rats did not change the blood sugar level and plasmatic concentration of triglycerides and total cholesterol during the entire experiment. Plasmatic concentration of total proteins and albumin showed a drop in the third week of pregnancy, probably due to high fetal use of proteins in this stage. Exercise performed by the pregnant group caused a lower protein drop in the third week, and in the non-pregnant group, determined an increase in plasmatic protein concentrations. The weight of the offspring of mother rats exercised until the end of the second and third weeks of pregnancy was found to be reduced in relation to the sedentary pregnant group. The group exercised until the third week showed a reduction in the number of offspring, indicating a possible fetal reabsorption. These findings confirmed that high intensity exercise can produce deleterious effects on the mother and fetus, especially when applied up to the last stage of pregnancy.  相似文献

The relationship between food intake and oxygen consumption was studied in a group of 60 rats acclimated at environmental temperatures of either 30 or 10 degrees C. Three separate experiments were performed. In the first, 28 rats were divided into two groups: control, which received 20 and 32 g of food/day at 30 and 10 degrees C, respectively, from 0800 to 1700 and experimental, which received 10 and 25 g of food/day at 30, and 10 degrees C, respectively. The experimental period lasted 6 weeks. Oxygen consumption was measured weekly at environmental temperatures of 5, 15, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C. In the second experiment, 16 rats were subjected to the same food intake as the animals in the first experiment. After 1 week, their oxygen consumption was measured at 25 degrees C over a period of 24 h. The third experiment was carried out with 16 other rats in which the control groups received the same amount of food as in the first experiment, and the experimental groups were fed 6 and 11 g/day at 30 and 10 degrees C, respectively, during 1 week. In the first experiment, no changes in oxygen consumption (per kilogram 0.67) were apparent in the experimental rats during 6 weeks. However, after 1 week on severe food restriction a significant decrease in oxygen consumption (per kilogram 0.67) was observed. A long-lasting thermic effect of food was observed in control rats from the second experiment and a rapid effect was apparent in restricted rats.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The spiny mouse Acomys cahirinus produces well-developed pups although it is a relatively small mammal (45 g). We envisioned two opposing hypotheses on the effect of early weaning on the growth rate of pups. The first predicts little effect since the increase in energy intake of dams above non-reproducing females is relatively low, suggesting that pups consume a large portion of their energy as solid food, and the pups are very well developed at birth. The second predicts a substantial effect since the 'index of precociality', that is the energy intake for maintenance of a pup as a proportion of that predicted for a rodent of its body mass, falls within values for altricial rodents, suggesting an extended maternal dependence of the young. To test these hypotheses, we measured the growth rate and food intake of pups weaned after either 7, 14, 21 or 28 days. Only three of 12 pups weaned after 7 days survived and, consequently, the latter hypothesis was supported. All pups weaned at 14–28 days survived. There was a significant decrease in growth rate during the first day after weaning in pups weaned at 7, 14 and 21 days but not after 28 days, suggesting that pups did not require parental care by day 28. Peak growth rate in pups weaned at 14 days occurred in the second week but occurred in the third week in pups weaned at 21 and 28 days. In spite of these differences, pups in all treatments had similar body mass at 64 days, indicating compensatory growth. We concluded that pups of A. cahirinus are precocial from a morphological aspect in that they are well developed at birth but altricial from a nutritional aspect in that they require extended maternal support.  相似文献

为了探究中华鳖(Pelodiscus sinensis)幼体的补偿生长能力,我们对中华鳖幼鳖(平均湿重9.56g)进行如下6种处理:饥饿0(对照)、1、2、3、4周,或者食物限制4周,即只投喂体湿重百分之一的食物;然后对各组进行饱食处理直到10周的实验结束为止。结果发现在饱食期的第一周各饥饿处理组的特殊生长率均显著高于对照组(P〈0.05),但是终体重均没有赶上对照组。当饥饿或食物限制结束时,脂肪含量随着饥饿期的延长而降低,灰分和水分则表现出相反的变化趋势:脂肪含量显著低于对照(P〈0.05),而灰分和水分则显著高于对照(P〈0.05)。蛋白含量则没有显著变化(P〉0.05)。实验结束时,除了灰分外(P〈0.05),其他个体组成指标均恢复到对照组的水平。以上结果表明中华鳖幼体在饥饿胁迫下首先利用脂肪作为主要能源以维持生存,以及在该研究条件下完全的食物剥夺可以诱发其部分补偿生长反应.而部分食物剥夺则不能诱发此反应。  相似文献

The effect of energy status on the response of luteinizing hormone (LH) pulse frequency to acute short-term energy deficiency created by fasting in estradiol-treated ovariectomized Shiba goats was studied in two experiments. In experiment 1, eight goats whose mean body weight (BW) was 25.6 +/- 5.8 (mean +/- S.D.)kg were fed 500 g hay cubes daily for 1 week. Then they were fasted for 3 days. Blood samples were collected for 4 h at 6 min intervals on the last day of feeding, first, second and third day of fasting for LH analysis. The goats were divided into light (<24 kg, n = 4) and heavy (> or =24 kg, n = 4) groups for data analysis. There was no difference in LH pulse frequency between the last day of feeding and each day of fasting in the heavy group. LH pulse frequency was significantly (P < 0.05) suppressed on the second day (3.3 +/- 1.3 pulses/4 h) and on the third day (2.3 +/- 1.9 pulses/4 h) relative to the day prior to fasting (4.8 +/- 1.5 pulses/4 h) in the light group. In experiment 2, BW plus a body mass index (gBMI: (body weight (kg)/withers height (m)/body length (m)) x 10) were measured to define energy status. Nine goats (BW, 25.6 +/- 5.8 kg) were fed 500 g hay cubes daily for a week and then fasted for 3 days. Then they were divided into two groups offered either a maintenance (n = 4) or a restricted (n = 5) level of feeding for 4 weeks. The restricted level of feeding was 30% of maintenance requirement based on the BW recorded weekly. The feeding level was then adjusted to maintain BW for a further week followed by 3 day fasting for restricted animals. Blood samples were collected for 6 h at 10 min intervals on the day prior to fasting and on third day of fasting before and after the dietary manipulation. BW (26.6 +/- 2.2 to 26.8 +/- 3.8 kg) and gBMI (8.4 +/- 0.4 to 7.8 +/- 0.3) remained constant over the period prior to fasting for the maintenance animals but were significantly lower (P < 0.05) after 4 weeks for the restricted goats (BW, 26.3 +/- 2.1 to 21.5 +/- 2.4 kg; gBMI, 8.4 +/- 0.9 to 6.9 +/- 0.7). There was no significant difference in the LH pulse frequency between feeding and fasting day in both sampling periods in the maintenance group. In the restricted group, LH pulse frequency was not suppressed by fasting in the first sampling period (6.8 +/- 2.9 to 5.2 +/- 2.5 pulses/6 h), whereas it tended to be suppressed (4.8 +/- 3.1 to 1.6 +/- 2.3 pulses/6 h; P < 0.06) and was significantly (P < 0.05) correlated to body weight (r = 0.70) and gBMI (r = 0.81) after the dietary manipulation. These results suggest that the suppressive effect of short-term energy restriction (fasting) on pulsatile LH secretion is related to body energy status.  相似文献

We report 2 experiments designed to investigate the effect of people's prior beliefs concerning specific color-flavor associations on their ability to discriminate the flavor of colored sugar-coated chocolate sweets. The participants in our study judged whether pairs of Smarties had the same flavor or not. In our first experiment, the participants either performed the task with their eyes open or else while wearing a blindfold to eliminate any visual cues. We used pairs of Smarties that either did or did not differ in flavor. In making a sighted comparison between red and green Smarties, the participants were more likely to judge them as tasting the same if they believed all non-orange Smarties to be identical in flavor and as different in flavor if they did not hold such a belief. The ability of our participants to discriminate orange Smarties from the red and green Smarties was unaffected by their prior belief that orange Smarties taste different. In a second experiment, participants' ratings of their certainty of there being a difference in flavor between a red and an orange Smartie that either tasted the same or different were affected by their prior beliefs-those participants who expected a difference were more likely to report a difference than those without any such prior expectation. Taken together, these results demonstrate that people's expectations concerning color-flavor associations can modulate their flavor discrimination responses, even for a familiar food product such as Smarties.  相似文献

Pituitary and ovarian function at the end of pregnancy and during the first six weeks after delivery was investigated serially in women who fully breast-fed their infants and in women who did not. In the women who did not breast-feed the plasma prolactin level decreased rapidly and from the third day after delivery was significantly lower than in the breast-feeding mothers, reaching the normal range of the menstrual cycle by the third week of the puerperium. In the breast-feeding mothers the plasma prolactin was still raised six weeks after delivery. The levels of FSH in both groups were identical and increased over the third week of the puerperium. Plasma oestrogen fell steeply in both groups during the first two weeks after delivery. In the breast-feeding mothers plasma oestrogen remained depressed but increased in the non-lactating women, reflecting follicular development in the ovary in response to FSH; the plasma oestrogen levels were significantly higher in the non-lactating women from the 17th day of the puerperium onwards. These findings support the concept that in breast-feeding women prolactin delays the return of ovulation by inhibiting the ovarian response to FSH stimulation.  相似文献

The effects of manipulation of phytochrome state and plant age were tested on flowering strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv. Paros) using end of day far red light (EOD-FR) under undesirable environmental conditions (high temperature and long day). The first and second experiments examined the effects of EOD-FR on flower induction, level of phytochrome and carbohydrates (starch, sucrose, fructose, and glucose), which were variable along with acid invertase enzyme. In the first experiment, there was no flower emergence, but in the second experiment, induction occurred in plants exposed to 6 h of EOD-FR for 32 cycles. The third experiment tested the effect of far red light (6 h + 32 d) on plants of 8, 10, and 12 weeks of age, and induction occurred in 12-week-old plants. The results of experiments II and III indicated that in the induced plants, the amount of phytochrome (Pr) increased. Furthermore, a higher level of sucrose was observed in induced plants, but the level of starch was lower. Nevertheless, amounts of glucose, fructose, and invertase enzyme did not change significantly, although they did show a slight increase in induced plants. These results provide evidence that a light-quality pathway exists that acts on regulation of flowering time in short-day strawberry cultivation.  相似文献

Male and female rats were treated with different high doses of adrenaline for five days. Their food and water intakes and body weights were recorded. A considerable sex-difference was found on the 5th day in body weights and plasma glucose concentrations. Males had higher plasma glucose and lost more weight than females. Females ate and drank more than males throughout the experiment. The adrenaline-sensitivity of females decreased by the third day but it did not change in males. These data suggest that females are able to activate mechanisms that compensate the effects of high adrenaline levels while males are not, or their compensatory mechanisms are less efficient.  相似文献

The postnatal development of phosphohydrolase activity of glucose-6-phosphatase has been examined in the different parts of the small intestine of the mouse and compared with that of trehalase and glucoamylase. After birth, glucose-6-phosphatase is present in all parts of the small intestine and the activity is already two to three times the adult values. In the course of the first 2 weeks, the activity increases and the different parts of the small intestine show distinct patterns. One day after birth, glucoamylase activity is present in all segments, while trehalase activity is confined to the first intestinal third. During the first 2 weeks, these activities remain rather stable. In the course of the third week, when trehalase and glucoamylase are increasing, glucose-6-phosphatase activity is declining toward adult values.  相似文献

Two parallel studies on albino male rats are performed. In the first study, there is a group which underwent resection of the proximal third of the small intestine. While the other group despite resection of the same segment also has a ligated common biliary and pancreatic duct. In the second study, one group of the experimental animals is only with ligated pancreatic duct and in the other group the same duct is implanted in the initial part of the ileum. On the 15th day after the surgical interventions the amylase activity and the absorption of glucose in the small intestine are studied by the method of turned sacs "in vitro". It is established that the glucose transport does not change after the four surgical interventions. However, the amylase activity increases about twice times after resection of the upper third of the small intestine and more than 4 times after resection of the same segment with simultaneous ligature of the common biliary and pancreas duct. Only at ligating the duct, the amylase activity is decreased in the jejunum and is significantly increased in the ileum, while its implantation in the initial part of the ileum does not change its activity in both studied segments of the small intestine. It is concluded that there are unknown inhibitors for the amylase activity in the biliary and pancreatic juice. The discussed issue is why they inhibit only the enzymatic compensatory processes without influencing the transport systems of the small intestine.  相似文献

The capacity of hybrid tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus × O. niloticus [23.2 ± 0.2 g (mean ± SE)] to show compensatory growth was assessed in an 8‐week experiment. Fish were deprived of feed for 1, 2 and 4 weeks, and then fed to satiation for 4 weeks; fish fed to satiation during the experiment served as control. Water temperature gradually declined from 28.1 to 25.5°C throughout the experiment. Specific growth rate (SGR) decreased with progressive food deprivation. At the end of deprivation, body weight was lower in the deprived fish than in the control. Fish deprived for 4 weeks exhibited lower contents of lipids and energy in whole body, and higher moisture content and ratio of protein to energy (P/E) than those of the control; they also consumed feed faster than the control when normal feeding was resumed. All deprived fish showed higher food intake (FI) than that of the control during re‐alimentation; however, enhanced SGR was only observed in the fish deprived for 4 weeks. There were no significant differences in digestibility of protein and energy, food efficiency (FE) or energy retention efficiency between the control and deprived fish. At the end of re‐alimentation, deprived fish failed to catch up in body weight with the control, while content of moisture, lipids and energy, and P/E in whole body of the deprived fish did not significantly differ from that of the control. The results of the experiment revealed that the hybrid tilapia reared in freshwater showed partial capacity for compensatory growth following food deprivation of 4 weeks, and that growth compensation was due mainly to increased FI, rather than to improved FE.  相似文献

Time dynamics of maltose, glycylglycine, glucose, and glycine hydrolysis and absorption in isolated loop of the small intestine was studied in chronic experiments on Wistar rats (group 1) after their transition from the standard diet to the protein-free one with enhanced content of carbohydrates. During protein starvation, there were different changes in the rates of glucose and glycine absorption, and glycylglycine hydrolysis and absorption in isolated intestinal loop, but to the end of the 2nd week they returned to the initial levels (for glucose and glycylglycine) or increased (for glycine). The rates of maltose hydrolysis and derived glucose absorption remained at the initial levels for the first days of protein starvation, decreased on the 5th day, and did not change afterwards. Maltase, alkaline phosphatase, and amino peptidase M activities, determined in homogenates of the small intestinal mucosa (per g of the tissue) after 2 weeks of protein starvation, were lower in the rats of group 1 in comparison with the rats of group 2, kept on the standard diet. Thus, under protein deficiency the hydrolytic and absorptive capacities of the small intestine correspond to both ingested food composition, and body requirements.  相似文献
