The protective role of selenium in rape seedlings subjected to cadmium stress   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
The effect of selenium (Se) on rape (Brassica napus) seedlings subjected to cadmium (Cd) stress was studied in vitro by investigating plant growth and changes in fatty acid composition, activity of antioxidative enzymes and DNA methylation pattern. Physiological experiments were carried out on seedlings cultured for 2 weeks on Murashige-Scoog (MS) media with Cd concentrations of 0, 400 and 600 μM, and on corresponding media supplied with Se (2 μM). Exposure to increasing Cd concentrations reduced the fresh weight of the upper part (hypocotyls+cotyledons) of the seedlings more strongly than that of the root system, which was accompanied by higher Cd accumulation in these tissues. In the upper part, Cd exposure led to significant changes in the biochemical parameters: fatty acid unsaturation of plasmalemma decreased, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPOX) diminished and that of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased. In contrast, the roots showed an increase in fatty acid unsaturation and in the activity of antioxidative enzymes. In both parts of rape seedlings H2O2 level and lipid peroxidation increased. Se addition to medium considerably reversed the Cd-induced decrease in fresh mass as well as the changes in lipid unsaturation and peroxidation. Se applied separately or in combination with Cd did not significantly affect the activity of antioxidative enzymes in the roots, but diminished it in the upper part. Moreover, the presence of Se in medium prevented changes in the DNA methylation pattern triggered in rape seedlings by high Cd concentrations. Two possible mechanisms for the action of Se were considered: (1) removal of Cd from metabolically active cellular sites, and (2) reduction of oxygen radicals.  相似文献

The main aim of the present study was to examine the role of selenium (Se) in ameliorating the toxic effect of cadmium (Cd) in mustard (Brassica juncea) plants. The plants exposed to elevated levels of Cd exhibited reduced biomass, pigment content, and relative water content (RWC). However, supplementation of Se restores the negative effect of Cd and increases biomass, pigment content, and RWC. Osmolyte (proline and glycine betaine) and sugar content were increased under Cd stress and further increase was observed with addition of Se. Cd decreased protein content and supplementation of Se increases it to appreciable levels. Cd also increased production of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase. Supplementation of Se decreased accumulation of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation, increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes to greater levels, and regulates Cd accumulation in roots and shoots. Ascorbic acid (AsA) and flavonoids decreased with elevated concentrations of Cd; however, tocopherol and total phenols were increased with the same concentrations of Cd. Se application maintains AsA and flavonoid content, and further increase in tocopherol and total phenols were observed with Se in the present study. Overall the results confirm that exogenous application of Se mitigates the negative effects of Cd stress in mustard plants through the regulation of osmoprotectants, antioxidant enzymes, and secondary metabolites.  相似文献

Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) may help to reduce the toxicity of heavy metals on plants growing in polluted soils. In this work, Sulla coronaria inoculated with four Cd resistant bacteria (two Pseudomonas spp. and two Rhizobium sullae) were cultivated in hydroponic conditions treated by Cd; long time treatment 50 µM CdCl2 for 30 days and short time treatment; 100 µM CdCl2 for 7 days. Results showed that inoculation with Cd resistant PGPB enhanced plant biomass, thus shoot and root dry weights of control plants were enhanced by 148 and 35% respectively after 7 days. Co-inoculation of plants treated with 50 and 100 µM Cd increased plant biomasses as compared to Cd-treated and uninoculated plants. Cadmium treatment induced lipid peroxidation in plant tissues measured through MDA content in short 7 days 100 µM treatment. Antioxidant enzyme studies showed that inoculation of control plants enhanced APX, SOD and CAT activities after 30 days in shoots and SOD, APX, SOD, GPOX in roots. Application of 50 µM CdCl2 stimulated all enzymes in shoots and decreased SOD and CAT activities in roots. Moreover, 100 µM of CdCl2 increased SOD, APX, CAT and GPOX activities in shoots and increased significantly CAT activity in roots. Metal accumulation depended on Cd concentration, plant organ and time of treatment. Furthermore, the inoculation enhanced Cd uptake in roots by 20% in all treatments. The cultivation of this symbiosis in Cd contaminated soil or in heavy metal hydroponically treated medium, showed that inoculation improved plant biomass and increased Cd uptake especially in roots. Therefore, the present study established that co-inoculation of S. coronaria by a specific consortium of heavy metal resistant PGPB formed a symbiotic system useful for soil phytostabilization.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is essential for health of humans, animals, and plants. Especially wheat is a major source of Se in the terrestrial food chain. In this study, an element analysis was optimized and the content of Ca, Mg, K, S, P, Fe, Se, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Mo in leaves, roots, and seeds were measured during growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Manu) in Hoagland nutrient solution with 5 and 15 μM Na2SeO4. Se was transported to all investigated tissues and accumulated in the seeds in proportion to used amounts. The supplementation of Se, independently of concentration, weakly modified the micro- and macro-elements content in the seedlings. In the flag-leaf stage, an increase of the Mo and S content in the shoots and the S and Cu content in the roots was found. Moreover, in the generative phase, a decrease in Ca and Fe in the roots was registered. Increased Se in the nutrient solution strongly stimulated the Se accumulation in the seeds.  相似文献

Impact of sulphur fertilisation on crop response to selenium fertilisation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
UK wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has a low selenium (Se) concentration and agronomic biofortification with Se is a proposed solution. A possible limitation is that UK wheat is routinely fertilised with sulphur (S), which may affect uptake of Se by the crop. The response of wheat to Se and S fertilisation and residual effects of Se were determined in field trials over 2 consecutive years. Selenium fertilisation at 20 g ha?1 as sodium selenate increased grain Se by four to seven fold, up to 374 µg Se kg?1. Sulphur fertilisation produced contrasting effects in 2 years; in year 1 when the crop was not deficient in S, grain Se concentration was significantly enhanced by S, whereas in year 2 when crop yield responded significantly to S fertilisation, grain Se concentration was decreased significantly in the S-fertilised plots. An incubation experiment showed that addition of sulphate enhanced the recovery of selenate added to soils, probably through a suppression of selenate transformation to other unavailable forms in soils. Our results demonstrate complex interactions between S and Se involving both soil and plant physiological processes; S can enhance Se availability in soil but inhibit selenate uptake by plants. Furthermore, no residual effect of Se fertiliser applied in year 1 was found on the following crop.  相似文献

Low concentrations of cadmium cause anatomical responses in leaf chlorenchyma enhancing Schinus molle photosynthesis and tolerance.

Abstract

This work is aimed to evaluate the effects of cadmium (Cd) on leaf anatomy and photosynthesis in Schinus molle, a species that can cope with harsh environments. Seven-month-old S. molle plants were exposed over 90 days to varying Cd concentrations (0, 10, 20, 50, 125 or 250 µM using Cd(NO3)2 as the Cd source). The plants were placed in vases containing washed sand and vermiculite as the substrate and nutrient solution. Throughout the experiment, the substrate was maintained at field capacity, and the nutrient solution was replaced at 15-day intervals. After 90 days, leaves were collected and processed for anatomical analysis using typical plant microtechniques. In addition, plant growth, photosynthesis, chlorophyll content and A/Ci curve were evaluated using an infrared gas analyzer. S. molle growth was not affected by Cd. Lower Cd concentrations (10 and 20 µM) resulted in greater net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and density, Vcmax, Jmax and mesophyll thickness. However, Cd concentrations of 50 µM or greater resulted in a reduction of most of the evaluated characteristics to levels close to control. All of the tested Cd concentrations resulted in reduced chlorophyll content and stomatal size. Therefore, the effect of Cd in a tolerant species such as S. molle is concentration dependent, and at low Cd concentrations, these plants can cope with the toxicity by adjusting leaf structure and function.

The physiological responses of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) to oxidative stress induced by cadmium were examined with respect to reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, antioxidant enzymes activities, and cell death appearance in wild-type SR1 and catalase-deficient CAT1AS plants. Leaf disks treated with 100 or 500 µM CdCl2 increased Evans blue staining and leakage of electrolytes in SR1 or CAT1AS plants, more pronouncedly in the transgenic cultivar, but without evidence of lipid peroxidation in any of the cultivars compared to controls. Cadmium significantly reduced the NADPH oxidase-dependent O 2 ? formation in a dose dependent manner in SR1 very strongly at 500 µM (to 5% of the activity in the nontreated SR1 leaf disks). In CAT1AS, the NADPH oxidase activity was constitutively reduced at 50% with respect to that of SR1, but the magnitude of the decay was less prominent in this cultivar, reaching an average of 64% of the C at 21 h, for both Cd concentrations. Hydrogen peroxide formation was only slightly increased in SR1 or CAT1AS leaf disks at 21 h of exposure compared to the respective controls. Cd increased superoxide dismutase activity more than six times at 21 h in CAT1AS, but not in SR1 and reduced catalase activity by 59% at 21 h of treatment only in SR1 plants. Despite that catalase expression was constitutively lower in CATAS1 compared to SR1 nontreated leaf disks, 500 µM CdCl2 almost doubled it only in CAT1AS at 21 h. The mechanisms underlying Cd-induced cell death were possibly not related exclusively to ROS formation or detoxification in tobacco SR1 or CAT1AS plants.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans and animals, and Se deficiency is a worldwide problem. Plants are a main dietary source of Se for humans and livestock. In this study we investigated the effect of two selenium-tolerant bacterial strains Bacillus cereus-YAP6 and Bacillus licheniformis-YAP7, on the growth and Se uptake by wheat plants. The bacteria-inoculated plants exhibited a significant increase in spike length, shoot length and dry biomass. Inoculated Se-treated plants also showed increased stem Se, S, Ca and Fe concentrations, by up to 375%, 40%, 55%, and 104%, respectively, and increased kernel Se, S, Ca and Fe concentrations by up to 154%, 85%, 60%, and 240%, respectively, compared to un-inoculated Se-treated plants. In conclusion, inoculation with strains YAP6 andYAP7 is a good Se biofortification strategy for wheat. Both strains showed resistance to other toxic elements, i.e., As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn and Zn. Optimal growth temperature and pH for both strains were 37°C and pH7, respectively, but both strains can grow very well at different temperatures (28–45°C) and at alkaline pH. Both strains have high Se reduction potential: strains YAP6 and YAP7 converted 92% and 32% of selenite into elemental Se within 48 h, respectively.  相似文献

Hydroponic experiments were carried out using seedlings of the wetland halophyte species Kosteletzkya virginica (L.) Presl. exposed to 10???M Cd or 100???M Zn in the absence or presence of 50?mM NaCl. Interaction between salinity and heavy metals was analysed in relation to plant growth, water status and tissue ion contents (Na, K and Ca). Results showed a strong inhibition effect of Cd on leaf emergence, lateral branch development and leaf expansion. Heavy metals induced a significant decrease in plant dry weight, water content, osmotic potential (?? S) and leaf water potential (?? w). Cadmium and Zn accumulated to higher extent in the roots than in the shoots. Cadmium increased the leaf K concentration while Zn had an opposite effect. Salinity strongly reduced Cd uptake and translocation from roots to shoots: it mitigated the Cd impact on lateral branch emergence but had no effects on plant dry weight and water status. Cadmium drastically reduced Na translocation in salt-treated plants while Zn increased it. It is concluded that complex interactions exist between heavy metals and monovalent cations in salt conditions and that Cd and Zn display contrasting behaviour in this respect. Stress-induced modification of ion content did not fully explain growth inhibition in Kosteletzkya virginica.  相似文献

Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) phytoremediation potential and its accumulation in edible and nonedible plant tissues is the function of various biochemical processes taking place inside plants. This study assessed the impact of organic ligands on Cd phyto uptake and different biophysiochemical processes of Spinacia oleracea L., and associated health hazards. Plants were exposed to Cd alone and chelated with citric acid (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Results revealed that the effect of Cd on lipid peroxidation, H2O2 production and pigment contents varied greatly with its applied level and the type of organic ligand. Moreover, the effect was more prominent in root tissues than leaf tissues and for high concentrations of Cd and organic ligands. Cadmium accumulation increased by 90 and 74% in roots and leaves, respectively, with increasing Cd levels (25–100?µM). Cadmium exposure at high levels caused lipid peroxidation in roots only. Application of both CA and EDTA slightly diminished Cd toxicity with respect to pigment contents, lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) contents. Hazard quotient (HQ) of Cd was <1.00 for all the treatments. Under nonlinear effect of treatments, multivariate analysis can be an effective tool to trace overall effects/trends.  相似文献

Kidneys from 32 autopsied Caucasian human subjects aged 16–60 were frozen then lyophilized while the flasks were kept in insulating containers. (Subjects with evidence of extensive weight loss, chronic renal failure, or carcinoma were not included). Replicate samples of cortex were removed, weighed, and wet-ashed in HNO3?HClO4. Zn, Cd, and Cu were estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with the 2261 Å line used for Cd background correction. Se was estimated by fluorescence with DAN in a Turner fluorimeter, but a #74 Kodak Wratten filter was added to minimize the 500 nm interference noted by E. Pickett (personal communication, 1980). Means and variability for the three elements in kidney cortex were similar to those in a North Carolina study as was Cd/(Cd+Zn)×100. Cortical Cd (P<0.05), Zn (P<0.10), and Cd/(Se·Zn) (P<0.05) increased with age, whereas Se showed no significant relationship with age. Age2, nonlinear effects of age, had a slight influence upon Cu (P<0.05) only if data were not adjusted for gender. There was no influence of ageper se upon Cu with or without adjustment for gender. The scatter diagrams of element concentrations plotted vs age contained several provocative “outlier” values. A positive association of kidney cortex Cd concentration, or Cd/(Se ·Zn), with postmortem indices of hypertension existed only if age, gender, and age2 were omitted from the multiple regression equation. This adjustment was not included in a similar study of North Carolina cases and appears to be the source of the major difference in their respective inferences drawn about the positive relationship of kidney cortex Cd with evidence of hypertension. This difference in statistical models does not however account for the failure of the West Virginia sample to indicate a protective role of kidney cortex Se suggested for the North Carolina subjects. Larger samples, drawn from regions differing in Se abundance, will be necessary to test the latter question adequately.  相似文献

Methyl jasmonate (MJ) is an important plant growth regulator, involves in various physiological processes of plants. In the present study, role of MJ in tolerance to oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) roots under arsenic (As) stress was investigated. The treatments were comprised of three MJ doses (0, 0.1, and 1 µM) and two levels of As (0 and 200 µM). Arsenic stress resulted in oxidative damage as evidenced by decreased root growth and enhanced reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation. However, plants treated with MJ decreased the H2O2 and O2 ·? contents in roots and have higher antioxidant activities. Importantly, results showed that MJ enhanced the redox states of AsA and GSH, and the related enzymes involved in the AsA–GSH cycle. Moreover, MJ also induced the secondary metabolites related enzymes (PAL and PPO) activities, under As stress. PAL and PPO expression was further increased by MJ application in the roots of B. napus under As stress. MJ also reduced the total As content compared with As alone treated plants. These findings suggest the role of MJ in mitigation of the As-induced oxidative damage by regulating AsA and GSH redox states and by reducing As uptake in both cultivars.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of exogenous selenium (Se) supplementation on the tolerance of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. Suryamukhi Cluster plants to cadmium (Cd) phytotoxicity at the reproductive stage. The pepper plants were supplied with Cd (0, 0.25 or 0.50 mM) and Se (0, 3 or 7 μM), individually or simultaneously, three times during the experiment. The obtained results show that Cd had deleterious effect on pepper plants at the reproductive stage. However, Se supplementation improved the flower number, fruit number and fruit diameter in plants exposed to 0.50 mM Cd. Moreover, both Se concentrations used in 0.25 mM Cd-treated plants and 3 μM Se in 0.50 mM Cd-treated plants enhanced fruit yield per plant as compared to Cd-alone treatment. The chlorophyll concentrations significantly increased in the fruits of Cd-exposed plants after Se addition. However, Se supplementation reduced total carotenoids and total soluble solid (TSS) concentrations in the pepper fruits exposed to Cd. Selenium also generally enhanced the total antioxidant activity of pepper fruits subjected to Cd. Both Se concentrations used increased mean productivity (MP), stress tolerance index (STI) and yield stability index (YSI) in plants grown in the medium containing 0.25 mM Cd. At low concentration (3 μM), Se significantly increased geometric mean productivity (GMP), STI and YSI of plant exposed to 0.50 mM Cd. The highest Cd concentration in the fruits was achieved at 0.50 mM Cd and Se application significantly reduced Cd accumulation in the Cd-exposed plants. Our results indicate that application of Se can alleviate Cd toxicity in pepper plants at the reproductive stage by restricting Cd accumulation in fruits, enhancing their antioxidant activity and thus improving the reproductive and stress tolerance parameters.  相似文献

Zn and Fe are essential nutritional elements in plants and play important roles in various physiological processes of plants. Zn and Fe are chemically similar to cadmium (Cd); therefore, Zn and Fe may mediate Cd-induced physiological or metabolic changes in plants. In order to evaluate the interaction between Cd, Zn and Fe, we conducted a hydroponics experiment to determine the plant biomass, photosynthetic characteristics, and Cd accumulation of ten ramie cultivars under Zn/Fe-sufficient or Zn/Fe-deficient conditions in the presence of 32 µM CdCl2. Ramie varied among cultivars in morpho-physiological response to Cd stress as well as Cd accumulation, translocation and distribution. Zn and Fe deficiency increased the concentration and amount of Cd in plant organs, but decreased TFstem to leaf and TFroot to stem. Cultivars with more Cd in roots and shoots showed smaller increase in Cd accumulation under Zn and Fe-deficiency stress. Xiangzhu 7 and Duobeiti 1 showed a higher capacity of Cd accumulation in their shoots. Zn and Fe deficiency decreased Pn, but increased Ci, Gs, and E in most cultivars. The difference in Cd translocation among ramie cultivars was mainly ascribed to the difference in plant transpiration.  相似文献

Main conclusion

NaCl alleviates Cd toxicity in Sesvium portulacastrum by maintaining plant water status and redox balance, protecting chloroplasts structure and inducing some potential Cd 2+ chelators as GSH and proline. It has been demonstrated that NaCl alleviates Cd-induced growth inhibition in the halophyte Sesuvium portulacastrum. However, the processes that mediate this effect are still unclear. In this work we combined physiological, biochemical and ultrastructural studies to highlight the effects of salt on the redox balance and photosynthesis in Cd-stressed plants. Seedlings were exposed to different Cd concentrations (0, 25 and 50 µM Cd) combined with low (0.09 mM) (LS), or high (200 mM) NaCl (HS) in hydroponic culture. Plant–water relations, photosynthesis rate, leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, chloroplast ultrastructure, and proline and glutathione concentrations were analyzed after 1 month of treatment. In addition, the endogenous levels of stress-related hormones were determined in plants subjected to 25 µM Cd combined with both NaCl concentrations. In plants with low salt supply (LS), Cd reduced growth, induced plant dehydration, disrupted chloroplast structure and functioning, decreased net CO2 assimilation rate (A) and transpiration rate (E), inhibited the maximum potential quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) and the quantum yield efficiency (Φ PSII) of PSII, and enhanced the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). The addition of 200 mM NaCl (HS) to the Cd-containing medium culture significantly mitigated Cd phytotoxicity. Hence, even at similar internal Cd concentrations, HS-Cd plants were less affected by Cd than LS-Cd ones. Hence, 200 mM NaCl significantly alleviates Cd-induced toxicity symptoms, growth inhibition, and photosynthesis disturbances. The cell ultrastructure was better preserved in HS-Cd plants but affected in LS-Cd plants. The HS-Cd plants showed also higher concentrations of reduced glutathione (GSH), proline and jasmonic acid (JA) than the LS-Cd plants. However, under LS-Cd conditions, plants maintained higher concentration of salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) than the HS-Cd ones. We conclude that in S. portulacastrum alleviation of Cd toxicity by NaCl is related to the modification of GSH and proline contents as well as stress hormone levels thus protecting redox balance and photosynthesis.

Antioxidative and growth-promoting effect of selenium on senescing lettuce   总被引:8,自引:1,他引:7

In human and animal cells, Se plays an essential role in antioxidation and exerts an antiaging function but it is toxic at high dietary intake. To increase its intake in forage and foodstuffs, Se fertilization is adopted in some countries where soils are low in bioavailable Se, even though higher plants are regarded not to require Se. To test its ability to counteract senescence-related oxidative stress in higher plants, a pot experiment was carried out with lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cultivated with increasing amounts of H2SeO4. The yields harvested 7 or 14 weeks after sowing revealed that a low Se dosage (0.1 mg kg–1 soil) stimulated the growth of senescing seedlings (dry weight yield by 14%) despite a decreased chlorophyll concentration. The growth-promoting function was related to diminished lipid peroxidation. In young and senescing plants, the antioxidative effect of Se was associated with the increased activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). In the senescing plants, the added Se strengthened the antioxidative capacity also by preventing the reduction of tocopherol concentration and by enhancing superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. When no Se was added, tocopherols and SOD activity diminished during plant senescence. The higher Se dosage (1.0 mg kg–1 soil) was toxic and reduced the yield of young plants. In the senescing plants, it diminished the dry weight yield but not the fresh weight yield.  相似文献

Willows (Salix spp.) can be used to phytoremediate soils contaminated by Zn and Cd under certain conditions. In this study, the ability of 14 Salix cultivars to concentrate Cd, Zn and S in leaves was measured in hydroponic culture with 10 and 200 µM Cd and Zn, respectively, in the nutrient medium. The cultivars showed a wide range of biomass yields, tolerance to metals, and foliar concentrations of Zn and Cd, with some cultivars accumulating up to 1000 mg kg?1 Zn, 70 mg kg?1 Cd and 10,000 mg kg?1 S with only mild phytotoxicity symptoms attributable to excess Zn. Cultivars with higher foliar Zn concentrations tended to have higher foliar Cd concentrations as well, and competition between Zn and Cd for uptake was observed. Exposure of Salix cultivars to Cd and Zn did not affect foliar concentrations of secondary metabolites such as polyphenols, but trace metal concentrations in leaves were significantly reduced (Fe and Cu) or increased (Mn) by exposure to excess Zn and Cd. Sulfur-XANES spectroscopy showed foliar S to be predominantly in highly oxidized (sulfate plus sulfonate) and reduced (thiol) forms, with oxidized S more prevalent in willows with the highest total S content.  相似文献

Biofortification of bread wheat by the transfer of useful variability of high grain Fe and Zn from Aegilops kotschyi through induced homoeologous pairing is the most feasible approach to alleviate micronutrient malnutrition worldwide. Deficiency of chromosome 5B in interspecific hybrids allows homoeologous pairing and recombination of chromosomes of wheat with those of the related species. The interspecific hybrid plants without 5B chromosome showed much higher chromosome pairing than did the plants with 5B. The F1 plants without 5B chromosome were selected and repeatedly backcrossed with wheat cultivar PBW343. The chromosome number of BC2F1 plants ranged from 43 to 60 with several univalents and multivalents. Molecular markers and GISH analysis confirmed the introgression of U/S chromosomes of Ae. kotschyi and their fragments in wheat. The BC2F2 plants showed up to 125 % increase in Fe and 158 % increase in Zn compared to PBW343 with Lr24 and Yr36. Induced homoeologous pairing in the absence of 5B was found to be an effective approach for transfer of useful variability for enhanced grain Fe and Zn content for biofortification of wheat for high grain micronutrient content.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted over 4 years at two locations in Manitoba, Canada to evaluate effects of preceding crop, tillage and phosphorus (P) fertilization on Cd and Zn concentration in oilseed flax (linseed—Linum usitatissimum L.). Canola (Brassica napus L.) and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were grown under conventional and reduced tillage with three rates of monoammonium phosphate. Flax was seeded the year following the spring wheat or canola, with or without P fertilizer, and Cd and Zn concentration and accumulation were determined in the flax tissue at 5 weeks and in the mature seed. Flax following canola had lower Zn concentration and accumulation and higher Cd concentration and Cd:Zn ratio in the tissue and seed relative to flax following wheat. Phosphorus fertilization tended to increase Cd concentration and Cd:Zn ratio and decrease Zn concentration in the tissue and seed. Effects of tillage and interactions among tillage, preceding crop, and P fertilization were inconsistent. Changes in flax Cd and Zn concentration may be due to changes in mycorrhizal colonization or by the high concentration of Cd in the decomposing canola residue. Crop sequence and P management can be used to improve flaxseed food quality, by increasing Zn and decreasing Cd concentration.  相似文献
