Consumer-facilitated invasions have been proposed as an alternative mechanism to direct competitive exclusion to explain the replacement of native plants by exotics. In a factorial field experiment manipulating competition from the exotic plant Alliaria petiolata and herbivory by exotic mollusks, we documented that mollusk herbivory significantly reduced the survival of two species of native palatable plants, but found minimal direct herbivore effects on less palatable species, including the invasive A. petiolata. These effects were evident after one growing season on younger juvenile plants of Aster cordifolius, but only after two growing seasons on older transplants of the same species, suggesting a greater vulnerability of young plants. In contrast to our expectations, A. petiolata competition alone had no effect on any of the six native species we tested. However, competition from A. petiolata did affect the survival of the most palatable native plant when mollusks were also present. While not significant for any other single species, this same pattern was observed for three of the five remaining native species tested. The selective grazing on palatable plants that we document provides novel evidence contributing to our understanding of observed shifts in the forest herbaceous layer towards the dominance of exotic plants and unpalatable species. More broadly, our results highlight the importance of the interactive effect of consumers and inter-specific competition in forest understories via its contribution to differential survival among regenerating species.  相似文献

Plant invasions disrupt native plant reproduction directly via competition for light and other resources and indirectly via competition for pollination. Furthermore, shading by an invasive plant may reduce pollinator visitation and therefore reproduction in native plants. Our study quantifies and identifies mechanisms of these direct and indirect effects of an invasive shrub on pollination and reproductive success of a native herb. We measured pollinator visitation rate, pollen deposition, and female reproductive success in potted arrays of native Geranium maculatum in deciduous forest plots invaded by the non-native shrub Lonicera maackii and in two removal treatments: removal of aboveground L. maackii biomass and removal of flowers. We compared fruit and seed production between open-pollinated and pollen-supplemented plants to test for pollen and light limitation of reproduction. Plots with L. maackii had significantly lower light, pollinator visitation rate, and conspecific pollen deposition to G. maculatum than biomass removal plots. Lonicera maackii flower removal did not increase pollinator visitation or pollen deposition compared to unmanipulated invaded plots, refuting the hypothesis of competition for pollinators. Thus, pollinator-mediated impacts of invasive plants are not limited to periods of co-flowering or pollinator sharing between potential competitors. Geranium maculatum plants produced significantly fewer seeds in plots containing L. maackii than in plant removal plots. Seed set was similar between pollen-supplemented and open-pollinated plants, but pollen-supplemented plants exhibited higher seed set in plant removal plots compared to invaded plots. Therefore, we conclude that the mechanism of impact of L. maackii on G. maculatum reproduction was increased understory shade.  相似文献

Water use by the native vegetation that existed in southern Australia prior to European settlement was largely in balance with rainfall. European settlers altered the landscape by clearing land to grow agricultural crops and pastures, and with the introduction of livestock to graze the partly cleared, native ecosystems. The aim of this review is to contrast the hydrology of grazed, partly cleared ecosystems, intact indigenous ecosystems, and entirely cleared agricultural systems in the intensive land-use zone (350–1000 mm annual rainfall zone) of southern Australia. Since European settlement, the areas of forests and woodlands in the Murray–Darling Basin have declined by approximately 64% to make way for agricultural enterprises. Modern-day vegetation surveys estimate between 52 and 58% of the intensive land-use zone of the Murray–Darling Basin has been entirely cleared, while about 40% is in the partly cleared state (disturbed ecosystems with canopy cover exceeding 5%). The replacement of native vegetation by agricultural crops and pastures has disturbed the water cycle that existed prior to European settlement, and has markedly elevated the amount of water leaking beyond the root zone of introduced species, and contributing to groundwater systems. Estimates of annual leakage beneath the root zone of annual crops range from 0 to 63 mm per annum; however, no estimates of leakage for partly cleared woodlands exist. Yet, because the groundwater beneath partly cleared woodlands rises considerably more slowly than under entirely cleared landscapes, it is likely that less water leaks beneath the roots of grazed woody ecosystem. However, aging of these systems by livestock grazing will reduce the numbers of woody individuals and will impact on groundwater recharge.  相似文献

Summary Native grasslands are considered to be one of Australia's most threatened ecosystems, yet relatively little is known about human preferences and attitudes that contribute to continued degradation of these landscapes. In a study conducted in southeastern Australia, landholders were asked to assess the agricultural, ecological and aesthetic value of native grasslands and other rural landscapes depicted in colour photographs. The results confirm low preference for treeless landscapes. Landholders' preferences for native grassland on their own property appeared most closely related to the perceived agricultural and aesthetic value of the grassland scene. This paper discusses the implication of these findings for programmes seeking to protect native grasslands on private properties.

In fishes, alterations to the natural flow regime are associated with divergence in body shape morphology compared with individuals from unaltered habitats. However, it is unclear whether this morphological divergence is attributable to evolutionary responses to modified flows, or is a result of phenotypic plasticity. Fishes inhabiting arid regions are ideal candidates for studying morphological plasticity as they are frequently exposed to extreme natural hydrological variability. We examined the effect of early exposure to flows on the development of body shape morphology in the western rainbowfish (Melanotaenia australis), a freshwater fish that is native to semiarid northwest Australia. Wild fish were collected from a region (the Hamersley Ranges) where fish in some habitats are subject to altered water flows due to mining activity. The offspring of wild‐caught fish were reared in replicated fast‐flow or slow‐flow channels, and geometric morphometric analyses were used to evaluate variation in fish body shape following 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of exposure. Water flows influenced fish morphology after 6 and 9 months of flow exposure, with fish in fast‐flow environments displaying a more robust body shape than those in slow‐flow habitats. No effect of flow exposure was observed at 3 and 12 months. Fishes also showed significant morphological variation within flow treatments, perhaps due to subtle differences in water flow among the replicate channels. Our findings suggest that early exposure to water flows can induce shifts in body shape morphology in arid zone freshwater fishes. Morphological plasticity may act to buffer arid zone populations from the impacts of anthropogenic activities, but further studies are required to link body shape plasticity with behavioral performance in habitats with modified flows.  相似文献

Invasive species are of growing ecological concern, in part because of conflicts arising with native congeners. The European paper wasp Polistes dominulus was first introduced to North America in the 1970s, and may be displacing at least one native species, P. fuscatus. Previous reports indicate that in native territories over half of P. dominulus colonies are infected by Strepsipteran parasites, which decrease host fitness. In North America, P. fuscatus are parasitized to a lesser degree (approximately one-third), but no infected colonies of invasive P. dominulus have been reported. Because immune function is an indicator of susceptibility to parasitism, we quantified activated levels of immune function by measuring the encapsulation response and phenoloxidase activity and then compared these levels between species. Counterintuitively, our results indicate that P. dominulus has lower levels of both mechanisms of immunity. Additionally, P. dominulus displayed less self-grooming activity than P. fuscatus. We briefly discuss possible immunological explanations for this invasion success, including the selective expression of low immunocompetence.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that dioecious plants occur more frequently in dry and nutrient‐poor habitats, suggesting that abiotic stress factors could contribute to evolution of dioecy from hermaphrodite. Therefore, experimental investigations on the responses of subdioecious species, a special sexual system comprising male, female, and hermaphrodite plants, to abiotic stress factors could quantify the contribution of selective pressure on the evolution of dioecy. In this study, we evaluated the physiological responses of different sex morphs of Oxyria sinensis Hemsley, a perennial herb native to the East Himalayas, to drought stress. Male, female, and hermaphrodite plants of O. sinensis were subjected to low, moderate, and high drought stress conditions in a glasshouse. Generally, with increasing water stress, the values of most measured variables slightly decreased, whereas water‐use efficiency slightly increased. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in most of the measured parameters among the sex morphs under each drought stress treatment, indicating that O. sinensis might be well‐adapted to drought stress conditions as its typical habitat is the dry and hot habitats of xerothermic river valleys. However, nitrogen‐use efficiency was significantly higher in male and female plants than in hermaphrodite plants under high drought stress conditions, suggesting that that nitrogen‐use efficiency under conditions of drought stress might have contributed to the evolution of dioecy from the hermaphrodite to some degree.  相似文献

Whereas it is widely believed that animals native to high altitude show lower O2 partial pressures at 50% hemoglobin saturation (P50) than do related animals native to low altitude, that "fact" has not been well documented. Consequently, P50 at pH 7.4, PCO2(7.4), the CO2 Bohr effect, and the buffer slope (delta log PCO2/delta pH) were determined via the mixing technique in Peromyscus maniculatus native to a range of altitudes but acclimated to 340 or 3,800 m. PCO2(7.4) and buffer slope were substantially lower at high altitude. The change in P50(7.4) between acclimation altitudes was minimal (0.8% increase at 3,800 m), because of counterbalancing changes in PCO2, 2,3-diphospho-D-glycerate concentration, and perhaps other factors. At both acclimation altitudes there was a highly significant negative correlation between P50(7.4) and native altitude. Since pH in vivo probably increases slightly at high altitude, the data on P50 corrected to pH 7.4 are probably underestimates of the difference in in vivo P50 at low vs. high altitude. Hence these results corroborate theoretical predictions that low P50 is advantageous under severe hypoxic stress.  相似文献

Seed predation in 28 species of native legumes in the Sydney region was examined. While bruchids are significant seed predators in the Sydney region they are not the dominant seed predators group, as is the case in central America. Other important groups include weevils, anthribids and lepidopterans. In each group of seed predators studied, apart from the lepidoptera, a particular genus was closely associated with a single plant genus. The degree of seed predation varied from 85% to 3%, with only six of the 28 species of plants studied relatively free from seed predation (less than 10% seed-crop losses). Variation in the degree of seed predation both within and between plant genera could not be explained by taxonomic relationships, morphology, distribution, seed weight or seed dispersal agents. A larger data base is necessary to account for such variations.  相似文献

In micro-arrayed compound screening (microARCS), an agarose gel is used as a reaction vessel that maintains humidity and compound location as well as being a handling system for reagent addition. Two or more agarose gels may be used to bring test compounds, targets, and reagents together, relying on the pore size of the gel matrix to regulate diffusion of reactants. It is in the microenvironment of the agarose matrix that all the components of an enzymatic reaction interact and result in inhibitable catalytic activity. In an effort to increase the throughput of microARCS-based screens, reduce the effort involved in manipulating agarose gels, and reduce costs, blotter paper was used rather than a second agarose gel to introduce a substrate to a gel containing a target enzyme. In this assay, the matrix of the blotter paper did not prevent the substrate from diffusing into the enzyme gel. The compound density of the microARCS format, the ease of manipulating sheets of paper for reagent addition, and a scheduled protocol for running multiple gels allowed for a throughput capacity of more than 200,000 tests per hour. A protease assay was developed and run in the microARCS format at a rate of 200,000 tests per hour using blotter paper to introduce the substrate. Picks in the primary screen were retested in the microARCS format at a density of 384 compounds per sheet. IC(50) values were confirmed in a 96-well plate format. The screen identified several small molecule inhibitors of the enzyme. The details of the screening format and the analysis of the hits from the screen are presented.  相似文献

Global change, including invasive species introduction, has already had observable effects on migrant bird species, from northern breeding areas to wintering grounds. In this study we analyze the response of the Eurasian oystercatcher abundance to the density of an invasive clam species (Corbicula fluminea) and its potential role as biological control. As a case study, the oystercatcher population fluctuations over a 30‐yr time period, coupled with video‐recorded estimates of its feeding behavior on C. fluminea, and results from an exclosure experiment, were analyzed in the NW of the Iberian Peninsula. Results showed that oystercatchers exert a top‐down control over C. fluminea density. In addition, oystercatchers doubled its wintering numbers in a C. fluminea invaded estuary where they actively feed upon this invasive clam. Given that, the facilitative interaction between the invasive C. fluminea and the migratory Eurasian oystercatcher seems to respond to bottom‐up forces. Altogether, our results suggest that control measures applied to long term biological invasions must be carefully analyzed since non‐native species may be sustaining dependent native communities.  相似文献

Fungal endophytes of 17 genera were found in stems of four native Gossypium species (G. australe, G. bickii, G. nelsonii, G. sturtianum) collected from inland areas in Queensland, the Northern Territory, and South Australia in 2001. Phoma, Alternaria, Fusarium, Botryosphaeria, Dichomera, and Phomopsis were common, accounting for 58, 18, 11, 3, 1, and 1 % of the 281 recovered isolates, respectively, and occurring in 47, 29, 19, 5, 5, and 4 % of the 79 sampled populations. Among the four Gossypium species in Queensland and the Northern Territory, Alternaria spp. and Fusarium spp. had the greatest recovery frequency in G. bickii stems. The recovery frequencies of Phoma spp. and Alternaria spp. were significantly greater in the G. sturtianum stems collected from South Australia than in those from Queensland and the Northern Territory. Pathogenicity of 42 representative isolates was tested on cultivated cotton (G. hirsutum). All isolates caused some localized discoloration in stem tissue when inoculation was conducted with the stem puncturing method, but none of the isolates could induce any foliar symptoms during the five-week experimental period by either inoculation method (root dipping or stem puncturing), suggesting that the endophytic fungi of native Gossypium species are unlikely sources of cotton pathogens.  相似文献

Invasive geckos of the genus Hemidactylus (Gekkonidae) are spreading rapidly through urban environments in many tropical and subtropical parts of the world. The invaders have caused rapid declines in native gecko abundance in some areas, but their interactions with Australian native species remain unknown. In a small rural village near Darwin, we found that Hemidactylus frenatus is abundant around both lighted and unlighted buildings, but rarely found in surrounding bushland. It is sympatric with the larger Gehyra australis (Gekkonidae) in this disturbed site, and often forages on the same buildings, but is active mostly during the dry‐season (vs. wet‐season for G. australis) and is competitively subordinate to the larger native species. In laboratory encounters, H. frenatus fled from G. australis, and modified its refuge‐site use in the presence of the native lizard. In those same trials, the native gecko often attacked and rarely fled; and did not shift its refuge‐site selection. In field surveys, the two taxa frequently co‐occurred. However, substrate use of the invasive H. frenatus was modified by the presence of the native G. australis, consistent with competitive displacement. Our counts of H. frenatus were highest during the dry‐season, when G. australis (like most other small native reptiles) is relatively inactive. The invasive gecko thus appears to be exploiting a ‘vacant niche’ around buildings, rather than displacing the native gecko taxon. This outcome may reflect the size disparity between the native species and the invader; Hemidactylus frenatus may well have significant ecological impacts on smaller native lizards.  相似文献

Summary Thirty-nine nodule bacteria isolated from indigenous legumes in South-Western Australia were found to range in effectiveness in symbiosis withLupinus digitatus. Effective nodulation by bacteria from some of the native legumes is, therefore, probably involved in the successful naturalization of this introduced lupin.It was found that dry weights, vigour ranking and ranking visually for leghaemoglobin concentration, are all useful in the rapid assessment of bacterial strain performance in nitrogen fixation in the lupin.  相似文献

The influence of meteorological parameters on airborne pollen of Australian native arboreal species was investigated in the sub-tropical city of Brisbane, Australia over the five-year period, June 1994–May 1999. Australian native arboreal pollen (ANAP), shed by taxa belonging to the families Cupressaceae, Casuarinaceae and Myrtaceae accounts for 18.4% of the total annual pollen count and is distributed in the atmosphere during the entire year with maximum loads restricted to the months May through November. Daily counts within the range 11–100 grains m–3 occurred over short intervals each year and were recorded on 100 days during the five-year sampling period. Total seasonal ANAP concentrations varied each year, with highest annual values measured for the family Cupressaceae, for which greater seasonal frequencies were shown to be related to pre-seasonal precipitation (r 2 = 0.76, p = 0.05). Seasonal start dates were near consistent for the Cupressaceae and Casuarinaceae. Myrtaceae start dates were variable and established to be directly related to lower average pre-seasonal maximum temperature (r 2 = 0.78, p = 0.04). Associations between daily ANAP loads and weather parameters showed that densities of airborne Cupressaceae and Casuarinaceae pollen were negatively correlated with maximum temperature (p < 0.0001), minimum temperature (p < 0.0001) and precipitation (p < 0.05), whereas associations with daily Myrtaceae pollen counts were not statistically significant. This is the first study to be conducted in Australia that has assessed the relationships between weather parameters and the airborne distribution of pollen emitted by Australian native arboreal species. Pollen shed by Australian native Cupressaceae, Casuarinaceae and Myrtaceae species are considered to be important aeroallergens overseas, however their significance as a sensitising source in Australia remains unclear and requires further investigation.  相似文献
