Amino acid sequences of fibrinopeptides A and B from savanna baboons, Papio anubis and Papio hamadryas, and highland baboon, Theropithecus gelada, were established. The sequences of the fibrinopeptides A from the three baboons were identical: (sequence: see text) The fibrinopeptides B were composed of 9 residues and demonstrated the sequence: (sequence see text) where X3 = Arg in P. anubis, His in P. hamadryas, and Gly in Th. gelada. Position-3 of the B peptides was the only replacement site observed among the 25 amino acid residues in both fibrinopeptides from the baboons. Based on these sequences, a molecular phylogeny for the three species of baboons was deduced. The evolutionary rates of the peptides B of the baboons and macaques were also estimated. It was observed that the fibrinopeptides changed at an uneven rate during the evolution of old-world monkeys, i.e., baboons and macaques.  相似文献

A 17 month field study of unprovisioned patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas pyrrhonotus) in Laikipia, Kenya, using both ad libitum and scan sampling techniques, revealed that the diet of patas monkeys consists primarily of gum of Acacia drepanolobium, arthropods (both free-living and concentrated in the swollen thorns of A. Drepanolobium), and other animals. This type of diet is normally found only in smaller-bodied primates. Results from vegetational transects suggest that the larger-bodied patas monkey can subsist on such a diet because gum and arthropods are relatively easily found in their habitat, thereby minimizing search time. Patas monkeys also spend more time moving and less time feeding (while not moving) than other Old World primates. The characteristic long limbs of patas may have evolved in response to feeding on small, nonusurpable, and widely distributed foods, in which access to foods is maximized while time and energy spent in terrestrial travel between food sites are minimized. DNA sequence data of the nuclear-encoded gamma1-gamma2-globin duplication region were used to examine the phylogenetic relationships of 16 cercopithecid (Old World monkey) species representing 12 extant genera. Morphology- and molecular-based hypotheses of Old World monkey branching patterns are generally congruent, except for generic relationships within the subtribe Papionina. The cercopithecids divide into colobines (leaf-eating monkeys) and cercopithecines (cheek-pouched monkeys). The colobines examined by the DNA data divide into an Asian clade (Nasalis, proboscis monkeys; Trachypithecus, langurs) and an African clade (Colobus, colobus monkeys). The cercopithecines divide into tribes Cercopithecini (Erythrocebus, patas monkey; Chlorocebus, green monkeys; Cercopithecus, guenons) and Papionini. Papionins divide into subtribes Macacina (Macaca, macaques) and Papionina (Papio, hamadryas baboons; Mandrillus, drills and mandrills; Theropithecus, gelada baboons; Lophocebus, arboreal mangabeys; Cercocebus, terrestrial mangabeys). In a morphologically based classification, Mandrillus is a subgenus of Papio, whereas Lophocebus is a subgenus of Cercocebus. In contrast, the molecular evidence treats Mandrillus as a subgenus of Cercocebus, and treats both Theropithecus and Lophocebus as subgenera of Papio. Local molecular clock divergence time estimates were used as a yardstick in a "rank equals age" system to propose a reduction in taxonomic rank for most clades within Cercopithecidae.  相似文献

The socio-ecological model predicts that the quality, distribution, and patch size of food resources determines the dominance hierarchy of female monkeys based on the type of food competition they experience. Comparative studies of closely related species have evaluated the socio-ecological model and confirmed its validity. For example, female patas monkeys in Laikipia, Kenya, form a nonlinear and unstable dominance hierarchy (i.e., egalitarian), whereas females of sympatric, closely related savannah monkeys form a linear and stable dominance hierarchy (i.e., despotic), in accordance with the model's predictions of the characteristics of food resources. I compared agonistic interactions involving food between patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) and sympatric savannah monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) in Kala Maloue, Cameroon. I found linear dominance hierarchies not only in savannah monkeys, but also in patas monkeys in Kala Maloue. The rates of agonistic interactions during feeding between patas monkeys were equivalent to those between savannah monkeys in Kala Maloue; further, these rates were significantly higher than those of both Laikipia patas and savannah monkeys. The results imply that patas monkeys in Kala Maloue are not egalitarian, but are despotic, similar to savannah monkeys. Disparity in the dominance hierarchies of patas monkeys between Kala Maloue and Laikipia were attributable to the differences in the characteristics of food resources. Although patas monkeys in Laikipia subsist on small and dispersed food resources within a high-density area, those in Kala Maloue subsisted on food resources that were clumped in intermediate-sized patches within a low-density area. This study shows that the socio-ecological model is applicable not only for interspecific comparisons but also for intraspecific comparisons.  相似文献

We used antisera to human A and C apolipoproteins to identify homologues of these proteins among the high-density lipoprotein apoproteins of Macaca fascicularis (cynomolgus) monkeys, and NH2-terminal analysis was used to verify the homology. The NH2-terminal sequence of the M. fascicularis apoA-I is identical with that of another Old World species, Erythrocebus patas, and differs from human apoA-I at only 4 of the first 24 residues. M. fascicularis apoA-II contains a serine for cysteine replacement at position 6 and is therefore monomeric like the apoA-II from all species below apes. Human and monkey apoA-II are not otherwise different through their first 25 residues. About 20% of M. fascicularis apoC-I aligns with human apoC-I through residue 22, and 80% lacks an NH2-terminal dipeptide. Otherwise, the monkey apoC-I differs from the human protein at only 2 of 25 positions. Two forms of M. fascicularis apoC-II were identified. ApoC-II1 is highly homologous with human apoC-II, whereas an NH2-terminal hexapeptide is absent from apoC-II2. ApoC-II2 was the predominant species, and apoC-II1 appears to represent a propeptide from which a hexapeptide prosegment is cleaved at a Gln-Asp bond. Both forms of monkey apoC-II are potent activators of lipoprotein lipase. There are two polymorphic forms of M. fascicularis apoC-III, and their electrophoretic mobilities become identical after treatment with neuraminidase. Except for a glycine for serine substitution at position 10, the first 15 NH2-terminal residues of M. fascicularis and human apoC-III are the same.  相似文献

International Journal for Parasitology8: 65–68. Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) have been infected with Schistosoma intercalatum, a schistosome of increasing concern in Africa, to study definitive host-parasite relationships. A high compatibility for parasitism in the S. intercalatum-patas monkey system was demonstrated suggesting this combination for long-term investigations in which minimal parasite destruction by the host would be expected. Egg production by S. intercalatum was high. Most eggs are deposited in the large intestine, but they elicit only slight pathology. No pathologic involvement of the urinary bladder was observed, in contrast to previous investigations in which other species of nonhuman primates infected with S. intercalatum developed extensive pathology.  相似文献

Following intra-group aggression, obvious conciliatory displays are absent from the behavioural repertoire of patas monkeys, Erythrocebus patas, while many other Old World primate species show special reconciliation gestures. When 10-min focal-animal samples that began after spontaneous aggression were compared with matched-control samples, captive adult female patas followed up on aggressive interactions, interacting sooner and more often with former opponents during post-conflict observations than during matched-control observations. Almost one-third of post-conflict observations included affiliative behaviour between former opponents, which is termed reconciliation. Matrilineally related opponents were more likely to reconcile with one another than were unrelated animals. No effect of the dominance hierarchy on tendency to reconcile was found. Thus, patas monkeys showed general patterns in post-conflict behaviour that were similar to those seen in other primates previously investigated.  相似文献

Patas monkeys may be especially vulnerable to local extinction because they live in relatively small, female-philopatric groups at low densities and are strongly polygynous. We assessed a patas monkey population in Kenya's 9,700 km(2) Laikipia District over 25 years, using data collected in 1979-1981 and 1992-2004. The data were based on intensive observations of three study groups, "on the ground" counts, and surveys of Laikipia residents. In 1979-1981, a minimum of 415 patas monkeys lived in 14-15 groups. By 2000, the best estimate suggested 310-445 patas monkeys living in 13-17 groups over a greater surveyed area, suggesting that patas monkeys in Laikipia may have undergone a slight decline in numbers over time. Their distribution, however, was similar over time. The relative stability of this population has likely been the result of beneficial co-existence with large-scale cattle ranching. Outside Laikipia, substantial habitat alteration from rising human populations has coincided with the near disappearance of patas monkeys where they were previously more numerous. The small population in Laikipia, probably the largest remaining in Kenya, may therefore be critical to the continued existence of patas monkeys in that country and may be dependent on maintenance of large-scale ranches. Such land use provides patas monkeys with water and broad expanses of Acacia drepanolobium woodlands, the habitat to which patas are restricted in Laikipia.  相似文献

Most quadrupeds walk with lateral sequence (LS) gaits, where hind limb touchdowns are followed by ipsilateral forelimb touchdowns. Primates, however, typically walk with diagonal sequence (DS) gaits, where hind limb touchdowns are followed by contralateral forelimb touchdowns. Because the use of DS gaits is nearly ubiquitous among primates, understanding gait selection in primates is critical to understanding primate locomotor evolution. The Support Polygon Model [Tomita, M., 1967. A study on the movement pattern of four limbs in walking. J. Anthropol. Soc. Nippon 75, 120-146; Rollinson, J., Martin, R.D., 1981. Comparative aspects of primate locomotion, with special reference to arboreal cercopithecines. Symp. Zool. Soc. Lond. 48, 377-427] argues that primates' use of DS gaits stems from a more caudal position of the whole-body center of mass (COM) relative to other mammals. We tested the predictions of the Support Polygon Model by examining the effects of natural and experimental variations in COM position on gait mechanics in two distantly related primates: fat-tailed dwarf lemurs (Cheirogaleus medius) and patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). Dwarf lemur experiments compared individuals with and without a greatly enlarged tail (a feature associated with torpor that can be expected to shift the COM caudally). During patas monkey experiments, we experimentally shifted the COM cranially with the use of a weighted belt (7-12% of body mass) positioned above the scapulae. Examination of limb kinematics revealed changes consistent with systematic deviations in COM position. Nevertheless, footfall patterns changed in a direction contrary to the predictions of the Support Polygon Model in the dwarf lemurs and did not change at all in the patas monkey. These results suggest that body mass distribution is unlikely to be the sole determinant of footfall pattern in primates and other mammals.  相似文献

Recently it has been shown that the gene-density correlated radial distribution of human 18 and 19 homologous chromosome territories (CTs) is conserved in higher primates in spite of chromosomal rearrangements that occurred during evolution. However, these observations were limited to apes and New World monkey species. In order to provide further evidence for the evolutionary conservation of gene-density-correlated CT arrangements, we extended our previous study to Old World monkeys. They comprise the remaining species group to be analyzed in order to obtain a comprehensive overview of the nuclear topology of human 18 and 19 homologous CTs in higher primates. In the present study we investigated four lymphoblastoid cell lines from three species of Old World monkeys by three-dimensional fluorescence in situ hybridization (3D-FISH): two individuals of Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis), and an interspecies hybrid individual between African green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) and Patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas). Our data demonstrate that gene-poor human 18 homologous CTs are located preferentially close to the nuclear periphery, whereas gene-dense human 19 homologous CTs are oriented towards the nuclear center in all cell lines analyzed. The gene-density-correlated positioning of human 18 and 19 homologous CTs is evolutionarily conserved throughout all major higher primate lineages, despite chromosomal inversions, fusions, fissions or reciprocal translocations that occurred in the course of evolution in these species. This remarkable preservation of a gene-density-correlated chromatin arrangement gives further support for a functionally relevant higher-order chromatin architecture.  相似文献

An habituated group of wild patas monkeys was observed in Kenya for 550 h in 1984. Observations were made primarily during an interval that, as previous studies at the same site had demonstrated, coincided with the annual mating and conception periods. Earlier field studies of patas at other sites had reported that heterosexual patas groups had only a single resident adult male and that mating was harem-polygynous. At the Kenya site, by contrast, as many as six males were simultaneously resident and mated in the group during the conception period. Males adopted a variety of tactics to gain access to receptive females, ranging from opportunistic mating to attempts at sequestration that resembled consort behavior in other cercopithecoids such as savanna baboons and rhesus macaques. Aggressive competition for access to females took place among the males, although the number of completed copulations per male did not bear a positive relation to agonistic dominance rank. For patas monkeys, harem polygyny is only one available option within an overall mating system that is best described as a form of promiscuous polygyny, especially during periods when conception is most likely.  相似文献

Summary The fibrinopeptides A and B from gorilla, organgutan and siamang have been characterized, thereby completing a study of all six extant hominoids. The gorilla peptides were identical with the corresponding fibrinopeptides previously reported for human and chimpanzee. The orangutan peptide A was also identical with the human-chimpanzee-gorilla type A, but its fibrinopeptide B had two amino acid differences. The siamang A peptide differed from the others in one of its sixteen residues, but its peptide B was identical with the orangutan B. A cladogram based on the fibrinopeptide sequences of all six hominoids indicates that five amino acid replacements and one deletion can account for the evolution of present day sequences. This paper presents the results of a study on the introduced, free-ranging patas monkey population of Southwestern Puerto Rico (SWPR). It describes information on the population size, social group composition, diet, daily ranging patterns, and patas home range during a 3 year period. The patas monkey population in the study area consisted of approximately 120 individuals in four heterosexual groups and several all-male bands. Within their home ranges (26.8 km2), the population density was 4.47 individuals/km2. Home range size among the population's four heterosexual groups varied from 3.72 km2 to 15.39 km2, and minimum daily distance traveled ranged from 0.8–2.0 km. In general, the social structure and mating system of this population parallels what has been described for African populations. However, habitat use, ranging behavior, and the quality of intergroup interactions suggests that patas of this population exhibit territorial behavior. Am. J. Free-ranging patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) from El Guayacán island, Puerto Rico, were surveyed to establish values for the hemogram, serum biochemicals, calcium, and phosphorus. Results were tabulated for males and nonpregnant/nonlactating, pregnant, and lactating females. Generalizations about the rate of behavioral development and mother-infant relations in nonhuman primates are often based largely on observations of a few closely related species of macaques. Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas)are sufficiently distant phylogenetically and distinct in their social and ecological adaptations from the well-studied macaque species that observations of their patterns of infant development and mother-infant relations may indicate to what extent macaque patterns are typical of Old World monkey species. Eight patas infants living with their mothers in an established captive group were observed for 960 hr over the first year of life. These infants showed a rapid rate of behavioral development and attainment of independence from mothers. Patas also have one of the fastest rates of sexual maturation of any Old World monkey species. This pattern of rapid social and sexual development can be viewed as a response to a highly seasonal savannah environment in which there is a premium on ability to achieve nutritional, locomotor, and social self-sufficiency as quickly as possible and to reproduce as early and as often as developmental constraints will permit. Patterns of infant development and mother-infant relations may be best understood as an integral part of a species’ overall life history pattern.  相似文献

The suborder Anthropoidea of the primates has traditionally been divided in three superfamilies: the Hominoidea (apes and humans) and the Cercopithecoidea (Old World monkeys), together comprising the infraorder Catarrhini, and the Ceboidea (New World monkeys) belonging to the infraorder Platyrrhini.We have sequenced an approximately 390-base-pair part of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene for 26 species of the major groups of African monkeys and apes and constructed an extensive phylogeny based upon DNA evidence. Not only is this phylogeny of great importance in classification of African guenons, but it also suggests rearrangements in traditional monkey taxonomy and evolution. Baboons and mandrills were found to be not directly related, while we could confirm that the known four superspecies of mangabeys do not form a monophyletic group, but should be separated into two genera, one clustering with baboons and the other with mandrills. Patas monkeys are clearly related to members of the genus Cercopithecus despite their divergence in build and habitat, while the talapoin falls outside the Cercopithecus clade (including the patas monkey). TRIM5-CypA融合基因(TRIMCyp)是一种独特的TRIM5基因形式。迄今已发现新大陆猴中包括鹰猴在内的夜猴属所有代表种,以及在北平顶猴、巽他平顶猴、食蟹猴、印度恒河猴和熊猴等旧大陆猴中均存在这种基因融合现象,但在新大陆猴与旧大陆猴中的TRIMCyp融合基因的基因融合模式和表达剪接方式不同。新大陆猴TRIMCyp融合基因是由CypA假基因的cDNA序列通过LINE-1逆转座子介导的逆转座方式插入至TRIM5α基因的第7和第8外显子之间的内含子中形成,而旧大陆猴TRIMCyp融合基因则是由CypA假基因的cDNA序列以相似的逆转座方式插入至TRIM5基因的3’非翻译区(untranslatedregions,UTR)形成。TRIMCyp融合基因在不同灵长类动物中的存在比例、基因型、TRIMCyp融合蛋白的表达以及对逆转录病毒的限制活性均有所差异。鹰猴和平顶猴的TRIMCyp融合基因研究较多,鹰猴TRIMCyp融合蛋白可能以与TRIM5α相似机制限制HIV-1的感染,而平顶猴TRIMCyp融合蛋白则丧失了限制HIV-1的作用。这两个功能截然不同的融合基因为TRIM5α作用机制研究提供了难得的实验材料,也为建立HIV-1感染的新型灵长类动物艾滋病模型奠定了科学依据。该文综述了TRIMCyp融合基因在灵长类动物中的分布、存在形式及其限制逆转录病毒复制的作用机制等方面的研究情况。  相似文献
