This research aims to analyse the sediment capacity to buffer free sulphide release in three coastal lagoons which differ in terms of eutrophication level, tide influence and primary producer communities. A preliminary estimate of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) regeneration coupled with sulphide fluxes is also made. Sediment profiles of ferrous and ferric iron and reduced sulphur pools were determined in three stations in the Bassin d'Arcachon (South West France), in one site in the Etang du Prévost lagoon (Southern France), and in three stations in the Sacca di Goro lagoon (Northern Italy). Laboratory experiments were also conducted by incubating sediment slurries. Slurries from the French lagoons were also enriched with about 2% d.w. of organic detritus obtained from the dominant macrophytes of each site, namely Zostera noltii and Ruppia cirrhosa (Bassin d'Arcachon), and Ulva rigida (Etang du Prévost). In the Sacca di Goro, slurry experiments were conducted at two sites with different salinity range, sediment composition and hydrodynamics.Field data showed that concentrations of available iron (Fe(II)+Fe(III)) ranged from a minimum of 28.5 µmol cm–3 (Etang du Prévost) to a maximum of 275.7 µmol cm–3 (Sacca di Goro). Moreover, in the French lagoons, acid volatile sulphide (AVS) accumulation in the superficial sediment was related to ferrous iron concentrations. Laboratory experiments showed that in spite of strong reducing conditions, sulphide and SRP release was weaker in iron-rich sediments and in those enriched with the most refractory organic matter. The highest fluxes were detected in sediment slurries from the Etang du Prévost, which had the lowest iron content, supplied by 2% of the labile detritus from Ulva rigida. In this case, SRP release was directly related to sulphide production. Two factors seem significant to evaluate the buffer capacity against free sulphide and SRP release from anoxic sediment: organic matter biodegradability, which forces sediment toward reducing conditions, and iron availability, which can affect sulphide mobility as well as the iron hydroxide-phosphate-sulphide system.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal and diurnal variations in sediment-water fluxes of O2, NO 3 , and NH 4 + as well as rates of nitrification, denitrification, and nitrate ammonification were determined in two different coastal lagoons of southern France: The seagrass (Zostera noltii) dominated tidal Bassin d'Arcachon and the dystrophic Etang du Prévost. Overall, denitrification rates in both Bassin d'Arcachon (<0.4 mmol m–2 d–1) and Etang du Prévost (<1 mmol m–2 d–1) were low. This was mainly caused by a combination of low NO 3 concentrations in the water column and a low nitrification activity within the sediment. In both Bassin d'Arcachon and Etang du Prévost, rates of nitrate ammonification were quantitatively as important as denitrification.Denitrification played a minor role as a nitrogen sink in both systems. In the tidal influenced Bassin d'Arcachon, Z. noltii was quantitatively more important than denitrification as a nitrogen sink due to the high assimilation rates of the plants. Throughout the year, Z. noltii stabilized the mudflats of the bay by its well- developed root matrix and controlled the nitrogen cycle due to its high uptake rates. In contrast, the lack of rooted macrophytes, and dominance of floating macroalgae, made nitrogen cycling in Etang du Prévost more unstable and unpredictable. Inhibition of nitrification and denitrification during the dystrophic crisis in the summer time increased the inorganic nitrogen flux from the sediment to the water column and thus increased the degree of benthic-pelagic coupling within this bay. During winter, however, benthic microalgae colonizing the sediment surface changed the sediment in the lagoon from being a nitrogen source to the over lying water to being a sink due to their high assimilation rates. It is likely, however, that this assimilated nitrogen is liberated to the water column at the onset of summer thereby fueling the extensive growth of the floating macroalgae, Ulva sp. The combination of a high nitrogen coupling between sediment and water column, little water exchange and low denitrification rates resulted in an unstable system with fast growing algal species such as phytoplankton and floating algae.  相似文献

Sediment samples collected from coastal lagoons on the French Mediterranean (Prévost Lagoon) and Atlantic coasts (Arcachon Bay and Certes fishponds) have been studied in order to determine the population densities and the species diversity of the different groups of anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (purple sulfur bacteria, purple nonsulfur bacteria and green sulfur bacteria) present in these ecosystems. Several strains of each group were isolated in pure culture and characterized by their physiological properties. The occurrence of purple nonsulfur bacteria in organic rich sediments of the Arcachon Bay and the dominance of purple sulfur bacteria in the Prévost lagoon and Certes fishponds are discussed with respect to their community structure and abundance. The diversity differences of the phototrophic bacterial strains isolated from both environments are also discussed.  相似文献

During 1994 net sediment-water fluxes of oxygen, ammonium and inorganic phosphorus as well as sediment profiles of organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and iron were determined in three shallow eutrophic environments. Investigations were conducted monthly from March to December at five stations in the Sacca di Goro (Po River Delta, Italy). In the late summer, samples were collected from a single site in the Prévost lagoon (French Mediterranean coast) and three stations in the Bassin d'Arcachon (French Atlantic coast). In the Sacca di Goro, water-sediment exchanges of O2, NH 4 + and PO 4 3– were estimated by means of core incubation in the dark. Benthic fluxes for the French lagoons were in part determined experimentally using benthic chambers and in part from the literature. In general in the Sacca di Goro the highest oxygen uptake and nutrient release rates were found at the central sites, affected by macroalgal growth. At the sampling site adjacent to the freshwater inlet, sediment-water exchanges were principally influenced by tidal activity. In terms of organic matter and nutrient levels, sediments from the Sacca di Goro and from the Prévost lagoon, both colonised by the floating macroalga Ulva rigida C. Agardh, were similar. Sediments from the inner sheltered site in the Bassin d'Arcachon, invaded by the rooted macrophyte Ruppia cirrhosa (Pet.) Grande, showed the highest total N and P content (363 ± 157 µmol N cm–3 and 15 ± 2 µmol P cm–3 as average values in the top 10 cm of sediment), but were low in pore water ammonium and orthophosphate probably due to the high sequestering capacity of the system and/or efficient coupling between bacterial nutrient regeneration and assimilation by the plant roots. In addition the outer tidal stations in the Bassin d'Arcachon, invaded by rooted macrophytes, were low in pore water nutrients. A different trend was evident in the Prévost lagoon where the concentrations of exchangeable inorganic phosphorus and ammonium were appreciable (0.28 ± 0.07 µmol P cm–3 and 2.4 ± 1.4 µmol N cm–3 as average values in the top 10 cm of sediment). High amounts of dissolved organic nitrogen were found in the pore water at all the sites investigated showing the key role of the organic nitrogen in the recycling of nitrogen in these systems. The hypothesis that iron is a key factor in controlling phosphorus release is discussed since the Sacca di Goro, which is subject to dystrophic crises, is richer in iron than the Bassin d'Arcachon, which is a more buffered system.  相似文献

Enumeration of the functional groups of sulfur bacteria was performed in the sediments in the Bassin d'Arcachon, a mesotidal lagoon with strong tidal currents and dominant populations of seagrass (Zostera noltii), and in the Etang du Prévost, a shallow lagoon with moderate tidal fluctuations and dominant populations of floating seaweed (Ulva sp.). In addition, data were collected on the distribution of oxygen and sulfide at the water-sediment interface during diel cycles. Bacterial enumeration studies revealed highest numbers in the top two cm of the sediments for three functional groups of sulfur bacteria, these being the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), the colorless sulfur bacteria (CSB), and the phototrophic sulfur bacteria (PSB). In both systems high numbers of SRB were encountered, suggesting ample availability of organic matter. A comparison between different sites in each ecosystem showed that sediments overlain by more stagnant water were dominated by PSB, whereas those overlain by more oxygenated water were dominated by CSB. Important factors are the physical forces induced by tidal currents and the degree of daily exchange of water between the lagoons and the sea. These factors may explain the differences observed between the two systems with regard to the development of anoxic conditions, more so than the level of eutrophication. It appears that rooted plants play an important role in the introduction of oxygen into the sediments, thus enhancing the competitive position of CSB compared to PSB. Mini-electrodes studies revealed high concentrations of free sulfide at the inner site of the Etang du Prévost but very low concentrations at the inner station of the Bassin d'Arcachon, which may be explained by the high iron input of the latter, rather than by differences in the rate of sulfide production.  相似文献

Gross primary production (GPP) and respiration (R) in an intertidal Zostera noltii (Hornemann, 1832) community were estimated each month from in situ CO2 flux measurements during the emersion period in the Bay of Morlaix (France). Simultaneously, the Chlorophyll a biomass of Z. noltii leaves, associated epiphytes and sediment within the benthic chambers were also monitored. The significant positive exponential relationship established between R and the maximum daily temperature emphasized that temperature was a good predictor of seasonal variation in the community R in Z. noltii bed. In contrast, the amplitude of the fitted curve on GPP was low and represented <25% of the annual mean value (90.9 ± 15.2 mgC m−2 h−1). The Chlorophyll a biomass of sediment was high (133.70 ± 22.96 mg m−2) but it was likely constituted by detritus which did not contribute much to the community GPP. The Chlorophyll a biomass of associated epiphytes was higher in winter and varied over the year inversely with Z. noltii. Therefore, the asynchronous dynamic of primary producers could support a constant rate of production at community scale over the year.  相似文献

Arcachon Bay is characterized by extensive meadows of the seagrass Zostera noltii. Moreover, as a consequence of eutrophication, massive proliferations of the macroalga (Monostroma obscurum) have occurred since the beginning of 1990s.This paper describes the anaerobic decomposition of biomass of both species under experimental conditions by two methods. Firstly, the dynamics of decomposition were studied in situ using litter bags. The remaining biomass and the elemental composition of the decomposing macrophytes were monitored. Secondly, degradation was studied in experimental containers under anoxic conditions in which the release of inorganic nutrients and the development of fermentative and sulfate-reducing bacterial populations were followed. The decomposition rate of total biomass was faster for macroalgae than for the vascular plants, thus corroborating previous observations. However, both in situ and laboratory experiments showed that the anaerobic decomposition of the seagrass Z. noltii resulted in rapid release of inorganic N and P, and increasing C/N and C/P ratios of the residual biomass. As a result, the recycling of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus compounds was slightly more efficient for Z. noltii than for M. obscurum. Recycling of inorganic nutrients appears to be of a great importance to the whole ecosystem, because of the extensive spreading of Z. noltii in the bay.  相似文献

The role of epiphytes in an intertidal Zostera noltii seagrass bed in Marennes-Oléron Bay was assessed in comparison with the other main benthic primary producers (Z. noltii, microphytobenthos) at two bathymetric levels and on a seasonal basis. Assemblage and biomass of epiphytes were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Z. noltii and its detrital matter followed a typical seasonal pattern: microphytobenthos was present in large quantities throughout the year representing 21% of the total biomass while detrital matter, above-ground parts and below-ground parts accounted for 65, 9 and 5%, respectively. Only two species of epiphytic diatoms, Cocconeis scutellum and Cocconeis placentula, were observed on seagrass leaves. Epiphyte biomass was very low, representing on average less than 0.001% of that of microphytobenthos or leaves. This low epiphyte biomass is linked with the absence of macroalgae and also with the low biovolume of Cocconeis, which formed a monolayer of cells on leaves. This can be explained by the severe conditions of the intertidal and the high leaf turn-over of Z. noltii leaves.  相似文献

The aquatic macroinvertebrates in two freshwater biotopes, viz. aNymphoides peltata-dominated site and a macrophyte-free site, were studied quantitatively in a shallow alkaline oxbow lake of the river Waal, the main branch of the river Rhine in The Netherlands. The research comprised the analysis of water, sediment and macrophyte samples. In the macrophyte-free site Oligochaeta and Nematocera, particularly of the collector gatherer functional feeding group, dominated the prevailing benthic community. The total macroinvertebrate biomass ranged here from 0.3 to 0.9 g ash-free dry weight per m2 of biotope.Species richness, densities, and biomass of macroinvertebrates were considerably higher in the biotope dominated byNymphoides peltata. Many taxa were found associated with the aboveground macrophyte. The sediment compartment, however, contributed most to the total density and biomass of macroinvertebrates. Nematocera and Oligochaeta were the most abundant fauna groups, whereas the largest share in total biomass was provided by clams (Mollusca). The biomass of the total macroinvertebrate community in theNymphoides-dominated site ranged from 6.2 to 7.5 g ash-free dry weight per m2 of biotope. The biomass of the aboveground phytophilous fauna ranged from 0.1 to 0.6 g ash-free dry weight per m2 of biotope. In September, when theNymphoides peltata vegetation was in its senescent phase, the largest numbers and the highest biomass of phytophilous macroinvertebrates were observed. The contribution of the shredder functional feeding group was high in this period. This, and the overall high abundance of fauna with a detritivorous mode of life, indicates the importance of macrophyte detritus as input to food chains.  相似文献

This work was carried out in a shallow eutrophic coastal lagoon (St. André lagoon, SW Portugal) which is artificially opened to the sea each year in early spring. Macrophytes, mainly Ruppia cirrhosa, are keystone species in this ecosystem covering up to 60% of its total area with peak biomasses over 500 g DW m–2. The main objectives were to study ecosystem metabolism, to evaluate the metabolic contribution to the community of the macrophyte stands and their influence in the development of thermal stratification and bottom oxygen depletion. The work combined an experimental and a modelling methodology. The experimental approach included open water, mesocosm and microcosm seasonal experiments. During these experiments several physical, chemical and biological parameters were monitored in the lagoon and in plastic enclosures (mesocosms) for periods of 24 hours. The microcosm experiments followed the light-dark bottle technique. The simultaneous use of these different methodologies allowed the analysis of the contribution of the planktonic and benthic compartments to the ecosystem's oxygen budget. The modelling work was based on the mathematical simulation of heat and gas exchanges in a vertically resolved water column, under different macrophyte densities. Several simulations were carried out, in order to investigate the importance of the macrophytes in the development of water column stratification and anoxia. The simulation results suggest that macrophytes may greatly influence thermocline and oxycline development. This influence is proportional to their biomass and canopy height. It is suggested that controlled macrophyte biomass removal of up to 25% of available biomass in summer, may be useful in preventing bottom anoxia without compromising benthic net primary production.  相似文献

The mute swan (Cygnus olor Gmelin) is one of the largest herbivorous waterbirds in the world. Its population increased dramatically over the last decades in Western Europe, leading to concerns about its potential impact on aquatic ecosystems. Indeed, swan consequences on fishponds remain poorly investigated, although fishpond animal communities and economic value both largely depend on aquatic macrophytes. We carried out an experiment in the Dombes region (Eastern France) with 96 exclosures on 24 fishponds. Our aim was to assess the impact of swan grazing on aquatic macrophyte presence, abundance and community structure (diversity and evenness) during the growing season (April to July). We also considered the potential effect of swan stay (i.e. number of swan days ha−1) and nutrient availability on macrophyte depletion. Swan grazing negatively affected the presence and abundance (% cover) of macrophyte beds, particularly at high swan density. No significant effect on dry biomass was found. Furthermore, swan grazing negatively affected community structure, suggesting that mute swan promoted the dominance of a few species in macrophyte communities. Whatever the macrophyte variable considered, nutrient availability in fishponds did not affect macrophyte depletion rate. It is speculated that both the repeated use of the same fishponds by birds and their expansion within the landscape may lead to more acute and broader consequences for macrophyte beds over the longer term.  相似文献

We experimentally simulated the temporality of the interactions between intertidal seagrasses and phytoplankton in the context of nutrient enrichment from continental origin. Phytoplankton development was retarded after 1-day exposure to intertidal Zostera noltii Hornemann vegetation samples, with respect to control treatments. This was not explained by resource competition and we hypothesized a direct interference between seagrass leaves and phytoplankton. After separation from the vegetation in 5-day incubations, the final yield of large phytoplankton, mainly diatoms and haptophytes, was determined by nutrient loading. In contrast, Synechococcus-like cells (SYN), phototrophic picoeukaryotes and nanophytoplankton decreased after day 3, most likely due to grazing control. A second experiment was designed to test the pelagos?Cbenthos coupling in more detail. Therefore, we compared the effect of aboveground biomass of Z. noltii alone with the effect of the entire vegetation including the sediment. This experiment did not provide unequivocal support for our initial hypothesis on direct interference competition between Z. noltii leaves and phytoplankton. Surprisingly, we found a spectacular decrease of SYN, phototrophic picoeukaryotes and nanophytoplankton in treatments with Z. noltii vegetation including the sediment, which could be attributed to benthic grazing by suspension feeders.  相似文献

The density, biomass and shoot morphology of two populations of Zostera noltii were monitored from January 1998 to July 1999 at two shallow Mediterranean lagoons of Biguglia and Urbino, which differ in hydro-morphological conditions and nutrient loading. Monitoring included the principal biological and foliar parameters (shoot density, aboveground and belowground biomass, length, width and number of leaves, LAI and coefficient A: percentage of leaves having lost their apex), the organic matter contents of the sediment and the environmental conditions (salinity, turbidity, temperature, nutrient concentrations and dissolved oxygen levels). The two populations of Z. noltii displayed seasonal changes in density (1600–19600 m2), aboveground biomass (11–153 g. DW. m−2), leaf length (33–255 mm), and leaf width (0.9–1.8 mm). Temperature and turbidity were significant environmental factors influencing the temporal changes observed in the Z. noltii meadows studied. Conversely, the belowground biomass, the number of leaves per shoot and the LAI did not undergo any seasonal changes. In the Biguglia lagoon, the functioning dynamics of the Z. noltii seagrass beds are determined by the catchment area and the inputs of nutrients derived from it, whereas in the Urbino lagoon the dynamics of the Z. noltiibeds depend on low levels of water turbidity.  相似文献

Efforts to limit plant growth in streams by reducing nutrients would benefit from an understanding of the relative influences of nutrients, streamflow, light, and other potentially important factors. We measured macrophytes, benthic algae, nutrients in water and sediment, discharge, and shading from 30 spring-fed or runoff-influenced streams in the upper Snake River basin, ID, USA. We hypothesized that in hydrologically stable, spring-fed streams with clear water, macrophyte and benthic algae biomass would be a function of bioavailable nutrients in water or sediments, whereas in hydrologically dynamic, runoff-influenced streams, macrophyte and benthic algae biomass would further be constrained by flow disturbance and light. These hypotheses were only partly supported. Nitrogen, both in sediment and water, was positively correlated with macrophyte biomass, as was loosely sorbed phosphorus (P) in sediment. However, P in water was not. Factors other than nutrient enrichment had the strongest influences on macrophyte species composition. Benthic algal biomass was positively correlated with loosely sorbed sediment P, lack of shade, antecedent water temperatures, and bicarbonate. These findings support the measurement of bioavailable P fractions in sediment and flow histories in streams, but caution against relying on macrophyte species composition or P in water in nutrient management strategies for macrophytes in streams.  相似文献

In saline lakes, areal cover and both species and structural diversity of macrophytes often decline as salinity increases. To assess effects of the loss of certain macrophyte growth forms, we characterized benthic and epiphytic invertebrates in three growth forms (thin-stemmed emergents, erect aquatics, and low macroalgae) in oligosaline lakes (0.8–4.2 mS cm−1) of the Wyoming High Plains, USA. We also measured the biomass and taxonomic composition of epiphytic and benthic invertebrates in two erect aquatics with very similar structure that are found in both oligosaline (Potamogeton pectinatus) and mesosaline (9.3–23.5 mS cm−1) (Ruppia maritima) lakes. Although total biomass of epiphytic invertebrates varied among oligosaline lakes, the relative distribution of biomass among growth forms was similar. For epiphytic invertebrates, biomass per unit area of lake was lowest in emergents and equivalent in erect aquatics and low macroalgae; biomass per unit volume of macrophyte habitat was greatest in low macroalgae. For benthic invertebrates, biomass was less beneath low macroalgae than other growth forms. Taxonomic composition did not differ appreciably between growth forms for either benthic or epiphytic invertebrates, except that epiphytic gastropods were more abundant in erect aquatics. Total biomass of epiphytic and benthic invertebrates for the same growth form (erect aquatic) did not differ between oligosaline (Potamogeton pectinatus) and mesosaline (Ruppia maritima) lakes, but taxonomic composition did change. In the oligosaline to mesosaline range, direct toxic effects of salinity appeared important for some major taxa such as gastropods and amphipods. However, indirect effects of salinity, such as loss of macrophyte cover and typically higher nutrient levels at greater salinities, probably have larger impacts on total invertebrate biomass lake-wide.  相似文献

St. Lucia is the largest estuary in South Africa with extensive areas of submerged macrophytes that fluctuate rapidly in response to water level and salinity changes. Epiphytes associated with submerged macrophytes were sampled during a severe drought between November 2004 and October 2005 when very low water level and high, variable salinity characterised the estuary. Potamogeton pectinatus and Ruppia cirrhosa were the dominant submerged macrophytes throughout the estuary, with P. pectinatus occurring at relatively low salinity (∼10 ppt) and R. cirrhosa at higher salinity (9–33 ppt). Zostera capensis, normally the other dominant submerged macrophyte, was conspicuously absent under the prevailing conditions. Epiphytic biomass, estimated as chlorophyll a, varied greatly between sites and over the 12 month sampling period, ranging from 10.9 to 71.7 mg Chl a m−2 leaf area for P. pectinatus and 16.9–165.0 mg Chl a m−2 leaf area for R. cirrhosa. Epiphytic biomass was twice as high in the Southern Lake where R. cirrhosa occurred, probably because the dominant epiphytes were macroalgae. An assessment of the diatom species composition of the epiphytic community indicated the dominance of only six species throughout the estuary. Neither epiphytic biomass nor diatom species composition showed strong statistical relationships with the environmental variables measured and it is believed that biological factors may be more important than the physico-chemical environment in determining epiphyte biomass distribution. Because epiphyte biomass is dependent on the presence of host surface area it will only contribute substantially to overall system biomass and productivity when submerged macrophyte area cover is high. In the St. Lucia Estuary this will occur when the water level is high and the upper level of the salinity gradient does not increase above that of seawater.  相似文献

The relative importance of potential carbon sources in the littoral of Lake Gooimeer, a lake in the centre of the Netherlands, was studied using a combination of 13C/12C-ratio analysis and carbohydrate composition analysis. The littoral is covered on the land side by a 80 m wide Phragmites australis bed. Potential carbon sources were macrophyte litter, seston and benthic algae. Samples of potential carbon sources, sediments and benthic macrofauna from inside and outside the bed were analyzed for their13C/12C-ratio and some for their carbohydrate composition. Results indicate that inside the bed, macrophyte litter was the main source of carbon for both the sediment organic matter and the benthic macrofauna, and that algal material was of minor importance. Outside the bed, production by benthic algae was the main carbon source, with seston as a second source. No macrophyte derived material could be detected outside the reed bed.Abbreviations DOC (Dissolved Organic Carbon) - SOM (Sediment Organic Matter)  相似文献

This study compares nutrient and sediment retention among rice and fish farms and wetlands in valley bottoms in southern Rwanda. Small-scale wetland, rice and fishpond experimental systems were established to measure sediment, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fluxes during a 9-month period. There were significant differences in the processes contributing to sediment, N and P retention in the three systems related to system characteristics, management practices, and seasons. Overall nutrient retention was higher in the rice and fish systems, but these systems had higher inputs and outputs of sediment and nutrients. In rice plots, resuspension and discharge of sediment and nutrients to the outflow were caused by ploughing and weeding during the first 3 months of the culture period. In fishponds, nutrients and sediment discharge were associated with water renewal and sediment removal during the last 5 months of the farming period. The undisturbed wetland plots had the lowest outflows of sediment and nutrients. Nutrient uptake and accumulation in biomass was much higher in rice and wetland vegetation than in fish biomass. In fishponds and wetlands, nutrients accumulated in soil, whereas rice plots showed a decrease or depletion in nutrient storage. To increase nutrient utilization at the plot level, sediment and nutrient discharge from land preparation and rice transplanting should be reduced by better farm practices. Within a catchment, nutrient flows can be integrated by using fishpond sediments for crop farming, by incorporating natural wetlands in crop rotations or using them as buffer zones.

The benthic oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production of undisturbed and sieved sediment cores with various values for the biomass of polychaetes collected from the intertidal mud-flat of Nanakita River estuary of Japan were measured simultaneously. The benthic oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production increased in proportion to the biomass of a dominant polychaete species Neanthes japonica (Izuka). This increase was not explained by the respiration of the animals alone. The residual increase in benthic O2 and CO2 fluxes may be due to mineralization processes in the burrow wall and enhanced diffusion caused by the pumping activity of the worms. From the average biomass of polychaetes at the study site, total benthic O2 and CO2 fluxes were estimated to be 5.2 mmol·m−2·h−1 and 7.3 mmol·m−2·h−1, respectively, at 20 ° C. The worms were responsible for 79% of the total O2 flux and 73% of the total CO2 flux but the respiration of the worms accounted for only 53% of the total O2 flux and 36% of the total CO2 flux. The residual enhanced fluxes were 26% and 37% for the total O2 and CO2 fluxes, respectively.  相似文献

Disturbance-mediated species loss has prompted research considering how ecosystem functions are changed when biota is impaired. However, there is still limited empirical evidence from natural environments evaluating the direct and indirect (i.e. via biota) effects of disturbance on ecosystem functioning. Oxygen deficiency is a widespread threat to coastal and estuarine communities. While the negative impacts of hypoxia on benthic communities are well known, few studies have assessed in situ how benthic communities subjected to different degrees of hypoxic stress alter their contribution to ecosystem functioning. We studied changes in sediment ecosystem function (i.e. oxygen and nutrient fluxes across the sediment water-interface) by artificially inducing hypoxia of different durations (0, 3, 7 and 48 days) in a subtidal sandy habitat. Benthic chamber incubations were used for measuring responses in sediment oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Changes in benthic species richness, structure and traits were quantified, while stress-induced behavioral changes were documented by observing bivalve reburial rates. The initial change in faunal behavior was followed by non-linear degradation in benthic parameters (abundance, biomass, bioturbation potential), gradually impairing the structural and functional composition of the benthic community. In terms of ecosystem function, the increasing duration of hypoxia altered sediment oxygen consumption and enhanced sediment effluxes of NH4 + and dissolved Si. Although effluxes of PO4 3− were not altered significantly, changes were observed in sediment PO4 3− sorption capability. The duration of hypoxia (i.e. number of days of stress) explained a minor part of the changes in ecosystem function. Instead, the benthic community and disturbance-driven changes within the benthos explained a larger proportion of the variability in sediment oxygen- and nutrient fluxes. Our results emphasize that the level of stress to the benthic habitat matters, and that the link between biodiversity and ecosystem function is likely to be affected by a range of factors in complex, natural environments.  相似文献
