A dual irradiation process involving aerobic thermophilic irradiation pretreatment (ATIP) and intermittent irradiation anaerobic digestion was developed to improve the digestion of waste-activated sludge. First, the effect of ATIP on further anaerobic digestion of activated sludge in batch mode was investigated. When exposed to ATIP for 24 h, the digestion reactor gave the highest methane yield, removed the most dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and showed the most effective reduction of VS compared to other irradiation times. This process was further enhanced by using an anaerobic fluidised-bed reactor packed with carbon felt in semi-continuous mode for digesting the pretreated activated sludge under intermittent irradiation conditions. Dual irradiation for 24 h followed by 60 min of anaerobic irradiation processing per day turned out to be optimal. This resulted in 65.3% of VS reduction, 83.9% of DOC removal ratio and 538 ml/g-VS of methane yield.  相似文献

Sequential anaerobic-aerobic digestion was applied to waste activated sludge (WAS) of a full scale wastewater treatment plant. The study was performed with the objective of testing the sequential digestion process on WAS, which is characterized by worse digestibility in comparison with the mixed sludge. Process performance was evaluated in terms of biogas production, volatile solids (VS) and COD reduction, and patterns of biopolymers (proteins and polysaccharides) in the subsequent digestion stages. VS removal efficiency of 40%, in the anaerobic phase, and an additional removal of 26%, in the aerobic one, were observed. For total COD removal efficiencies of 35% and 25% for anaerobic and aerobic stage respectively, were obtained. Kinetics of VS degradation process was analyzed by assuming a first order equation with respect to VS concentration. Evaluated kinetic parameters were 0.44 ± 0.20 d(-1) and 0.25 ± 0.15 d(-1) for the anaerobic stage and aerobic stage, respectively. With regard to biopolymers, in the anaerobic phase the content of proteins and polysaccharides increased to 50% and 69%, respectively, whereas in the subsequent aerobic phase, a decrease of 71% for proteins and 67% for polysaccharides was observed. The average specific biogas production 0.74 m(3)/(kg VS destroyed), was in the range of values reported in the specialized literature for conventional anaerobic mesophilic WAS digestion.  相似文献

Thermophilic anaerobic hydrogen and methane production by co-digestion of cassava stillage (CS) and excess sludge (ES) was investigated in this study. The improved hydrogen and subsequent methane production were observed by co-digestion of CS with certain amount of ES in batch experiments. Compared with one phase anaerobic digestion, two phase anaerobic digestion offered an attractive alternative with more abundant biogas production and energy yield, e.g., the total energy yield in two phase obtained at VSCS/VSES of 3:1 was 25% higher than the value of one phase. Results from continuous experiments further demonstrated that VSCS/VSES of 3:1 was optimal for hydrogen production with the highest hydrogen yield of 74 mL/g total VS added, the balanced nutrient condition with C/N ratio of 1.5 g carbohydrate-COD/g protein-COD or 11.9 g C/g N might be the main reason for such enhancement. VSCS/VSES of 3:1 was also optimal for continuous methane production considering the higher methane yield of 350 mL/g total VS added and the lower propionate concentration in the effluent.  相似文献

Two continuous stirred tanks reactors (CSTR) and four anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AFBR) were used to study the treatment of a synthetic meat waste during single-and two-stage anaerobic treatment. Four configurations were investigated; a single-stage CSTR and AFBR and the two-stage systems CSTR-AFBR and AFBR-AFBR. Startup of the anaerobic reactors was achieved within 50 days by use of a regime that included stepped increases in influent COD, methanol substitution of the substrate, and addition of essential trace metals such as cobalt and nickel. Two-stage reactors removed up to 85% of influent COD concentrations of 5000 mg/L, whereas the single-stage AFBR and CSTR removed 76 and 9%, respectively. The proportion of methane in the effluent gases increased as the influent COD concentration was increased. Volumetric production of methane was greatest for the first stage of the AFBR-AFBR system. Solids retention times calculated for the AFBRs ranged from 7 to 12 days, sufficient to support methanogenesis. The AFBRs and two-stage systems were more resistant to an influent pH shock from the operating value of pH 6.8 down to pH 3 than the CSTRs and single-stage reactors. It was concluded that high-rate anaerobic treatment systems were applicable to meat industry wastewaters and that two-stage digestion produced a better quality effluent.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to analyze the biomethanization process of food waste (FW) from a university campus restaurant in six reactors with three different total solid percentages (20%, 25% and 30% TS) and two different inoculum percentages (20-30% of mesophilic sludge). The experimental procedure was programmed to select the initial performance parameters (total solid and inoculum contents) in a lab-reactor with V: 1100mL and, later, to validate the optimal parameters in a lab-scale batch reactor with V: 5000mL. The best performance for food waste biodegradation and methane generation was the reactor with 20% of total solid and 30% of inoculum: give rise to an acclimation stage with acidogenic/acetogenic activity between 20 and 60 days and methane yield of 0.49L CH4/g VS. Also, lab-scale batch reactor (V: 5000mL) exhibit the classical waste decomposition pattern and the process was completed with high values of methane yield (0.22L CH4/g VS). Finally, a protocol was proposed to enhance the start-up phase for dry thermophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste.  相似文献

The start-up of the dry anaerobic batch digestion by the BIOCEL-concept of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) is unbalanced when a methanogenic inoculum (digested sewage sludge) is added to a total solids concentration of 35%. The unbalanced conditions are the result of the rapid degradation of easily-degradable compounds which are present in the organic fraction. Enhancement of the first start-up of the dry batch digestion was tried by applying an aerobic partial-composting step. By this aerobic treatment the easily degradable compounds are removed. After the composting step the anaerobic digestion will be limited by the conversion of the ligno-cellulose part of the organic fraction. It appeared that at least 19·5% of the volatile solids (VS) should be converted during the aerobic composting period before acid formation in the digestion was in balance with the methane formation. This amount of aerobically degraded VS means a 40% loss of potential biogas. The loss of a part of the biogas is a major drawback to the partial composting as a method for enhancing the start-up of the dry anaerobic digestion. A shorter composting period which is combined with another start-up method might be a feasible method to decrease the energy input of the dry digestion process.  相似文献

A multi stage high rate biomethanation process with novel self mixed anaerobic digester (SMAD) was developed in the present study to reduce the hydraulic residence time (HRT), increase the volatile solids (VS) loading rate, improve the VS destruction efficiency and enhance the methane yield. Specific design features of SMAD were useful in mixing the digester contents without consuming power and de-alienated the problem of scum formation. In the first phase, poultry litter having 10% total solids (TS) was subjected to high rate biomethanation in multi stage configuration (SMAD-I and II in series with UASB reactor). It was observed that gross VS reduction of 58%, gross methane yield of 0.16 m3 kg−1 (VS reduced) and VS loading rate of 3.5 kg VS m−3 day−1 at HRT of 13 days was obtained. In the second phase SMAD-II was bypassed from the process scheme keeping the other parameters same as in the first phase. The results obtained were not as encouraging as in the first phase. The study showed that multi stage configuration with SMAD design improved the anaerobic digestion process efficiency of poultry litter.  相似文献

Anaerobic co-digestion of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) and activated sludge (AS) was investigated using anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs). The effects of AS:FVW ratio and the organic loading rate (OLR) on digesters performances were examined. The mixtures having AS:FVW ratios of 100:00, 65:35, 35:65, by a total solid (TS) basis were operated at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20d. However, 30:70, 20:80, 15:85, 10:90 and 0:100 ratios were tested at an HRT of 10d. To investigate effects of aerobic and anaerobic digestion on the sludge filterability, specific resistance to filtration (R) was also determined. Increasing FVW proportions in the feedstock significantly improved the biogas production yield. The reactor that was fed with a 30:70 ratio showed the highest VS removal and biogas production yield of 88% and 0.57 L g(-1) VS added, respectively. The filterability results showed that the anaerobic effluent was characterised by a slightly better filterability efficiency of 1.6 x 10(16) m kg(-1) than 1.74 x 10(16) m kg(-1) of aerobic effluent. However, FVW addition improved the anaerobic co-digestion effluent filterability (5.52 x 10(14) m kg(-1)).  相似文献

Microwave (MW) irradiation is a relatively new possibility of conditioning and pretreating for wastewater sludge. Following its application in the telecommunications and food-industries, the environmental use of this technique has come into the limelight in recent years, and has become increasingly popular. Various publications have dealt with the examination of the effects of MW irradiation in municipal sludge-handling processes. We focused on the effects of MW irradiation at different power levels on solubilization (sCOD/tCOD), biodegradation and anaerobic digestion of sludge from the food-industry. For evaluating the efficiency of MW pre-treatment, the changes in the soluble fraction of the organic matter, the VS/TS ratio, the biogas yield, the methane content in the biogas, and the rate of batch mesophilic digestion were used as control parameters. Additionally, the energetic efficiency of MW pre-treatment was also examined. The results were compared with those of conventional heat (CH) treatments of the same sludge. The MW treatment proved to increase both the sCOD/tCOD and the VS/TS ratio. Furthermore, the biogas and methane yields increased during the digestion of the MW-pretreated food-industry sludge. A higher MW power level generally enhanced the biogas and methane production. Energetically, the most economic pre-treatment of sludge from dairy and meat processing was at a power level of 1.5 Wg−1 and 2.5 Wg−1 MW respectively; the surplus energy content of the enhanced biogas product could not compensate the extra energy demand of the stronger MW pre-treatments.  相似文献

A hybrid anaerobic solid-liquid bioreactor for food waste digestion   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A hybrid anaerobic solid-liquid (HASL) bioreactor is an enhanced two-phase anaerobic system, that consists of a solid waste reactor as the acidification reactor and a wastewater reactor, i.e. an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor as the methanogenic reactor. Food waste digestion in HASL bioreactors with pre-acidification and HASL operation stages was investigated in two separate runs. After 8 days of pre-acidification in Run A and 4 days in Run B, total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations in the leachates of both acidification reactors were similar. During HASL operation stage, TVFA and COD removal in the methanogenic phase were 77–100% and 75–95%, respectively. Some 99% of the total methane generated was from the methanogenic phase with a content of 68–70% methane. At the end of operation, about 59–60% of the added volatile solids (VS) were removed with a methane yield of 0.25 l g–1 VS.  相似文献

Characterization of food waste as feedstock for anaerobic digestion   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Food waste collected in the City of San Francisco, California, was characterized for its potential for use as a feedstock for anaerobic digestion processes. The daily and weekly variations of food waste composition over a two-month period were measured. The anaerobic digestibility and biogas and methane yields of the food waste were evaluated using batch anaerobic digestion tests performed at 50 degrees C. The daily average moisture content (MC) and the ratio of volatile solids to total solids (VS/TS) determined from a week-long sampling were 70% and 83%, respectively, while the weekly average MC and VS/TS were 74% and 87%, respectively. The nutrient content analysis showed that the food waste contained well balanced nutrients for anaerobic microorganisms. The methane yield was determined to be 348 and 435 mL/gVS, respectively, after 10 and 28 days of digestion. The average methane content of biogas was 73%. The average VS destruction was 81% at the end of the 28-day digestion test. The results of this study indicate that the food waste is a highly desirable substrate for anaerobic digesters with regards to its high biodegradability and methane yield.  相似文献

Hydrolysis of waste activated sludge (WAS) has been regarded as the rate limiting step of anaerobic sludge digestion. Therefore, in this study, the effect of ultrasound and hydraulic residence time during sludge hydrolysis was investigated with the goal of enhancing methane production from anaerobic digestion (AD). WAS was ultrasonically disintegrated for hydrolysis, and it was semi-continuously fed to an anaerobic digesters at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The results of these experiments showed that the solids and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies when using ultrasonically disintegrated sludge were higher during AD than the control sludge. The longer the HRT, the higher the removal efficiencies of solids and COD, while methane production increased with lower HRT. Sludge with 30% hydrolysis produced 7 × more methane production than the control sludge. The highest methane yields were 0.350 m(3)/kg volatile solids (VS)(add) and 0.301 m(3)/kg COD(con) for 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge, respectively. In addition, we found that excess ultrasound irradiation may inhibit AD since the 50% hydrolyzed sludge produced lower methane yields than 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge.  相似文献

Many beer breweries use high-rate anaerobic digestion (AD) systems to treat their soluble high-strength wastewater. Biogas from these AD systems is used to offset nonrenewable energy utilization in the brewery. With increasing nonrenewable energy costs, interest has mounted to also digest secondary residuals from the high-rate digester effluent, which consists of yeast cells, bacteria, methanogens, and small (hemi)cellulosic particles. Mesophilic (37 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) lab-scale, low-rate continuously-stirred anaerobic digestion (CSAD) bioreactors were operated for 258 days by feeding secondary residuals at a volatile solids (VS) concentration of ∼40 g l−1. At a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 15 days and a VS loading rate of 2.7 g VS l−1 day−1, the mesophilic bioreactor showed an average specific volumetric biogas production rate of 0.88 l CH4 l−1 day−1 and an effluent VS concentration of 22.2 g VS l−1 (43.0% VS removal efficiency) while the thermophilic bioreactor displayed similar performances. The overall methane yield for both systems was 0.21 l CH4 g−1 VS fed and 0.47–0.48 l CH4 g−1 VS removed. A primary limitation of thermophilic digestion of this protein-rich waste is the inhibition of methanogens due to higher nondissociated (free) ammonia (NH3) concentrations under similar total ammonium (NH4 +) concentrations at equilibrium. Since thermophilic AD did not result in advantageous methane production rates or yields, mesophilic AD was, therefore, superior in treating secondary residuals from high-rate AD effluent. An additional digester to convert secondary residuals to methane may increase the total biogas generation at the brewery by 8% compared to just conventional high-rate digestion of brewery wastewater alone. Hydrogen and methane production from desugared molasses by a two‐stage thermophilic anaerobic process was investigated in a series of two up‐flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors. The first reactor that was dominated with hydrogen‐producing bacteria of Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum and Thermoanaerobacterium aciditolerans could generate a high hydrogen production rate of 5600 mL H2/day/L, corresponding to a yield of 132 mL H2/g volatile solid (VS). The effluent from the hydrogen reactor was further converted to methane in the second reactor with the optimal production rate of 3380 mL CH4/day/L, corresponding to a yield of 239 mL CH4/g VS. Aceticlastic Methanosarcina mazei was the dominant methanogen in the methanogenesis stage. This work demonstrates that biohydrogen production can be very efficiently coupled with a subsequent step of methane production using desugared molasses. Furthermore, the mixed gas with a volumetric content of 16.5% H2, 38.7% CO2, and 44.8% CH4, containing approximately 15% energy by hydrogen is viable to be bio‐hythane.  相似文献

Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors are being used with increasing regularity all over the world, especially in India, for a variety of wastewater treatment operations. Consequently, there is a need to develop methodologies enabling one to determine UASB reactor performance, not only for designing more efficient UASB reactors but also for predicting the performance of existing reactors under various conditions of influent wastewater flows and characteristics. This work explores the feasibility of application of an artificial neural network-based model for simulating the performance of an existing UASB reactor. Accordingly, a neural network model was designed and trained to predict the steady-state performance of a UASB reactor treating high-strength (unrefined sugar based) wastewater. The model inputs were organic loading rate, hydraulic retention time, and influent bicarbonate alkalinity. The output variables were one or more of the following, effluent substrate concentration (Se), reactor bicarbonate alkalinity, reactor pH, reactor volatile fatty acid concentration, average gas production rate, and percent methane content of the gas. Training of the neural network model was achieved using a large amount of experimentally obtained reactor performance data from the reactor mentioned above as the training set. Training was followed by validation using independent sets of performance data obtained from the same UASB reactor. Subsequently, simulations were performed using the validated neural network model to determine the impact of changes in parameters like influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration and hydraulic retention time on the reactor performance. Simulation results thus obtained were carefully analyzed based on qualitative understanding of UASB process and were found to provide important insights into key variables that were responsible for influencing the working of the UASB reactor under varying input conditions.  相似文献

The effect of ultrasound and gamma-irradiation used as pre-treatments for the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures was examined. Untreated activated sludge was also subjected to anaerobic digestion at these temperatures as a control. The sonication time was 90 s using a Soniprep 150 (MSE Scientific Instruments) which operated at 23 kHz and had been adjusted to give an output of 47 W and the gamma-irradiation dose was 500 krad. The digesters were operated in a semi-continuous mode, being fed with fresh sludge every 24 h at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 8, 10 and 12 days. Over the 24 h period the differences between the digesters, in terms of volatile solids (VS) reductions and biogas production, were not statistically significant for any particular set of conditions. Thermophilic digestion performed better than mesophilic digestion in terms of biogas production, VS reductions (except at HRT of 8 days) and specific methane yields and the optimum retention time was 10 days, at both temperatures. When gas production over the initial eight hours (probably the hydrolytic stage) was examined, it was found that the gas production rates for pre-treated sludges were higher than those for untreated sludges. This was most pronounced at thermophilic temperatures and a HRT of 10 days. Sonication did not affect the numbers of faecal coliforms in the sludge. However, gamma-radiation caused a 3-log reduction and, when coupled with mesophilic digestion, gave a product which contained < 100 g(-1) TS. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion produced sludges which contained < 1 g(-1) TS irrespective of any pre-treatment.  相似文献

Anaerobic co-digestion of algal sludge and waste paper to produce methane   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The unbalanced nutrients of algal sludge (low C/N ratio) were regarded as an important limitation factor to anaerobic digestion process. Adding high carbon content of waste paper in algal sludge feedstock to have a balanced C/N ratio was undertaken in this study. The results showed adding 50% (based on volatile solid) of waste paper in algal sludge feedstock increased the methane production rate to 1170+/-75 ml/l day, as compared to 573+/-28 ml/l day of algal sludge digestion alone, both operated at 4 g VS/l day, 35 degrees C and 10 days HRT. The maximum methane production rate of 1607+/-17 ml/l day was observed at a combined 5 g VS/l day loading rate with 60% (VS based) of paper adding in algal sludge feedstock. Results suggested an optimum C/N ratio for co-digestion of algal sludge and waste paper was in the range of 20-25/1.  相似文献

The use of carbon-based conductive materials has been shown to lead to an increase in biogas and methane yields during anaerobic digestion (AD). The effect of these additives on AD using synthetic substrates has been extensively studied, yet their significance for wastewater sludge digestion has not been adequately investigated. Therefore, the aim of this research was to optimize the concentration of petroleum coke (PC) that is a waste by-product of oil refineries, for the anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge and investigation of phosphate removal in the AD process in the mesophilic temperature range. According to the results of the experiments, supplementing reactors with PC could significantly improve biogas and methane production. Supplementation of reactors with 1.5 g/L PC led to 23.40 ± 0.26% and 42.55 ± 3.97% increase in biogas production and methane generation, respectively. Moreover, the average volatile solids (VS), phosphate, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removals were 43.43 ± 0.73, 46.74 ± 0.77%, and 60.40 ± 0.38%, respectively.  相似文献

A methane enrichment process (MEP) was evaluated that involved air purging of recycled digester contents to strip CO2 and increase biogas methane content. The objective of this work was to determine if the aeration resulted in oxygen inhibition of microbial activities involved in anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste. To assess the degree of biological perturbation associated with the MEP, the reactor effluent was sampled twice while the MEP was operating and twice while it was not operating. Analyses were run on composite samples (representing several different sample ports of the non-mixed reactor) and samples of digester effluent entering and leaving the MEP process. The analyses included volatile organic acids (VOA), effluent solids content, dehydrogenase activity, specific methanogenic activities (SMA), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for methanogenic, sulfate-reducing, and cellulolytic bacterial species. Methane enrichment in these experiments occurred with the methane content of the biogas exceeding 90%. There were no effects of the MEP on effluent VOA concentration. The MEP had no effect on volatile solids (VS) levels of composite samples representing the non-mixed digester contents, however, VS was reduced in effluent passing through the MEP. Although MEP had an inhibitory effect on anaerobic populations leaving the MEP process, no inhibitory effects were observed in measurements of microbial activities in digester samples, including specific methane production rate, dehydrogenase, and numbers of specific organisms estimated using ELISA techniques.  相似文献

The anaerobic biodegradability of a mix of municipal primary sludge (PS), thickened waste activated sludge (TWAS) and fat, oil, and grease (FOG) was assessed using semi-continuous feed, laboratory-scale anaerobic digesters operated at mesophilic (35 °C) and thermophilic (52 °C) temperature. Addition of a large FOG fraction (48% of the total VS load) to a PS + TWAS mix, resulted in 2.95 times larger methane yield, 152 vs. 449 mL methane @ STP/g VS added at 35 °C and 2.6 times larger methane yield, 197 vs. 512 mL methane @ STP/g VS added at 52 °C. The high FOG organic load fraction was not inhibitory to the process. The results of this study demonstrate the benefit of sludge and FOG codigestion.  相似文献
