Photosynthetic parameters were determined in disks from leaves of C. arabica cv. Red Catuaí and C. canephora cv. Kouillou grown in the field. Kouillou showed a relatively higher irradiance requirement for saturating photosynthesis, lower chlorophyll (Chl) content, and higher Chl a/b ratio than Catuaí. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis under bright irradiance was manifested by decreases in maximum photochemical efficiency (evaluated by the variable to maximum fluorescence ratio, Fv/Fm), as a consequence of an increased initial and a quenched maximum fluorescence. Restoration of Fv/Fm following photoinhibition in low irradiance was faster in Kouillou than in Catuaí. Chloramphenicol both accelerated photoinhibition (mainly in Kouillou) and blocked its recovery for at least 190 min in either cultivar. Photosynthetic oxygen evolution under photoinhibitory conditions was decreased by chloramphenicol; in control leaf disks this decrease was only observed in C. arabica, but with a rapid recovery within 90 min of low irradiance exposure. In both coffee cultivars, the depressed photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 was not accompanied by a concomitant lowering in oxygen evolution during reversal from photoinhibition.  相似文献

To determine the dependence of in vivo photosystem (PS) II function on photon exposure and to assign the relative importance of some photoprotective strategies of PSII against excess light, the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and the content of functional PSII complexes (measured by repetitive flash yield of oxygen evolution) were determined in leaves of pea (Pisum satlvum L.) grown in moderate light. The modulation of PSII functionality in vivo was induced by varying either the duration (from 0 to 3 h) of light treatment (fixed at 1200 or 1800 mol photons · m-2 · s-1) or irradiance (from 0 to 3000 mol photons · m-2 · s-1) at a fixed duration (1 h) after infiltration of leaves with water (control), lincomycin (an inhibitor of chloroplast-encoded protein synthesis), nigericin (an uncoupler), or dithiothreitol (an inhibitor of the xanthophyll cycle) through the cut petioles of leaves of 22 to 24-day-old plants. We observed a reciprocity of irradiance and duration of illumination for PSII function, demonstrating that inactivation of functional PSII depends on the total number of photons absorbed, not on the rate of photon absorption. The Fv/Fm ratios from photoinhibitory light-treated leaves, with or without inhibitors, declined pseudo-linearly with photon exposure. The number of functional PSII complexes declined multiphasically with increasing photon exposure, in the following decreasing order of inhibitor effect: lincomycin > nigericin > DTT, indicating the central role of D1 protein turnover. While functional PSII and Fv/Fm ratio showed a linear relationship under high photon exposure conditions, in inhibitor-treated leaves the Fv/Fm ratio failed to reveal the loss of up to 25% of the total functional PSII under low photon exposure. The loss of this 25% of less-stable functional PSII was accompanied by a decrease of excitation-energy trapping capacity at the reaction centre of PSII (revealed by the fluorescence parameter, 1/Fo-1/Fm, where Fo and Fm stand for chlorophyll fluorescence when PSII reaction centres are open and closed, respectively), but not by a loss of excitation energy at the antenna (revealed by the fluorescence parameter, 1/Fm). We conclude that (i) PSII is an intrinsic photon counter under photoinhibitory conditions, (ii) PSII functionality is mainly regulated by D1 protein turnover, and to a lesser extent, by events mediated via the transthylakoid pH gradient, and (iii) peas exhibit PSII heterogeneity in terms of functional stability during photon exposure.Abbreviations D1 protein psbA gene product - DTT dithiothreitol - Fo chlorophyll fluorescence corresponding to open PSII reaction centres - Fv, Fm variable and maximum fluorescence after dark incubation, respectively - Fs, Fm steady-state and maximum fluorescence during illumination, respectively - P680 reactioncentre chlorophyll and primary electron donor of PSII - PS photosystem Financial support of this work by Department of Employment, Education and Training/Australian Research Council International Research Fellowships Program (Korea) is gratefully acknowledged.  相似文献

Diurnal courses in net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential (), internal CO2 concentration (ci), and water use efficiency (WUE) were studied as season progressed, in relation to environmental factors in field grown Prunus amygdalus. In sun leaves PN reached maximum between 09:00 to 11:00 h and subsequently declined when high temperature and low humidity occurred. An increase was observed late in the afternoon. A decrease in gs and was found as season progressed in both years of measurements. In periods of high evaporative demand, was very low, however, it did not explain the reductions of PN in all the three periods (spring, early and late summer). Midday depression of PN and gs seemed to be related with leaf temperature (Tl) and high irradiance. Increase in ci and F0 and decrease in Fv/Fm found between 12:00 and 14:00 h corresponded to the decrease in PN. Therefore, a transient modification of photosynthetic machinery might be considered. WUE was negatively correlated with vapour pressure difference of leaf to air, that decreased during the day. The September values, higher than in the previous months, were due to the lower seasonal decreases in PN than in gs.  相似文献

Optical characteristics, contents of photosynthetic pigments, total soluble sugars, and starch, rates of gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and leaf water relations were analysed in three Vitis vinifera L. cultivars, Tinto Cão (TC), Touriga Nacional (TN), and Tinta Roriz (TR), grown in Mediterranean climate. Chl content was significantly lower in TC than in TN and TR leaves, while the Chl a/b ratio was higher. TR had the lowest net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and contents of soluble sugars and starch than TN and TC. In spite of low Chl content, TC showed the lowest photon absorbance and the highest photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2. TC had the lowest predawn and midday leaf water potential. The capability for osmotic adjustment was similar among cultivars and the calculated modulus of elasticity was higher in TC leaves. The typical lighter green leaves of TC seemed to be an adaptive strategy to high irradiance and air temperature associated to water stress.  相似文献

14CO2 fixation was observed in orchid Dendrobium flowers; its rate decreased with the flower development. Chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence in different developmental stages of flowers was compared to other green plant parts (leaf, inflorescence stalk, and fruit capsule). The photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) (Fv/Fm) of a leaf was 14-21 % higher than that of a mature flower perianth (sepal, petal, and labellum) which had a much lower total Chl content and Chl a/b ratio. A higher quantum yield of PS2 (PS2) than in the mature flowers was observed in all green parts. Flower sepals had higher Chl content, Chl a/b ratio, and Fv/Fm values than the petal and labellum. During flower development the Chl content, Chl a/b ratio, Fv/Fm, and qN decreased while PS2 and qP remained constant. An exposure of developing flowers to irradiances above 50 µmol m-2 s-1 resulted in a very drastic drop of PS2 and qP, and a coherent increase of qN as compared to other green plant organs. A low saturation irradiance (PFD of 100 µmol m-2 s-1) and the increase in qN in the flower indicate that irradiation stress may occur since there is no further protection when the flower is exposed to irradiances above 100 µmol m-2 s-1. A low Chl/carotenoid ratio in mature flower perianth as a consequence of Chl content reduction in the course of flower development suggests a relief of irradiation stress via this mean.  相似文献

Photosynthesis was studied in relation to the carbohydrate status in intact leaves of the C4 plant Amaranthus edulis. The rate of leaf net CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance and intercellular partial pressure of CO2 remained constant or showed little decline towards the end of an 8-h period of illumination in ambient air (340 bar CO2, 21% O2). When sucrose export from the leaf was inhibited by applying a 4-h cold-block treatment (1°C) to the petiole, the rate of photosynthesis rapidly decreased with time. After the removal of the cold block from the petiole, further reduction in photosynthetic rate occurred, and there was no recovery in the subsequent light period. Although stomatal conductance declined with time, intercellular CO2 partial pressure remained relatively constant, indicating that the inhibition of photosynthesis was not primarily caused by changes in stomatal aperture. Analysis of the leaf carbohydrate status showed a five- to sixfold increase in the soluble sugar fraction (mainly sucrose) in comparison with the untreated controls, whereas the starch content was the same. Leaf osmotic potential increased significantly with the accumulation of soluble sugars upon petiole chilling, and leaf water potential became slightly more negative. After 14 h recovery in the dark, photosynthesis returned to its initial maximum value within 1 h of illumination, and this was associated with a decline in leaf carbohydrate levels overnight. These data show that, in Amaranthus edulis, depression in photosynthesis when translocation is impaired is closely related to the accumulation of soluble sugars (sucrose) in source leaves, indicating feedback control of C4 photosynthesis. Possible mechanisms by which sucrose accumulation in the leaf may affect the rate of photosynthesis are discussed with regard to the leaf anatomy of C4 plants.Abbreviations and symbols A net CO2 assimilation rate - Ci intercellular CO2 partial pressure - PEP phosphoenolpyruvate - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate - water potential - osmotic pressure  相似文献

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants transformed with antisense rbcS to decrease the expression of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) have been used to investigate the contribution of Rubisco to the control of photosynthesis in plants growing at different irradiances. Tobacco plants were grown in controlled-climate chambers under ambient CO2 at 20°C at 100, 300 and 750 mol·m–2·s–1 irradiance, and at 28°C at 100, 300 and 1000 mol·m–2·s–1 irradiance. (i) Measurement of photosynthesis under ambient conditions showed that the flux control coefficient of Rubisco (C infRubisco supA ) was very low (0.01–0.03) at low growth irradiance, and still fairly low (0.24–0.27) at higher irradiance. (ii) Short-term changes in the irradiance used to measure photosynthesis showed that C infRubisco supA increases as incident irradiance rises, (iii) When low-light (100 mol·m–2·s–1)-grown plants are exposed to high (750–1000 mol·m–2·s–1) irradiance, Rubisco is almost totally limiting for photosynthesis in wild types. However, when high-light-grown leaves (750–1000 mol·m–2·s–1) are suddenly exposed to high and saturating irradiance (1500–2000 mol·m–2·s–1), C infRubisco supA remained relatively low (0.23–0.33), showing that in saturating light Rubisco only exerts partial control over the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis in sun leaves; apparently additional factors are co-limiting photosynthetic performance, (iv) Growth of plants at high irradiance led to a small decrease in the percentage of total protein found in the insoluble (thylakoid fraction), and a decrease of chlorophyll, relative to protein or structural leaf dry weight. As a consequence of this change, high-irradiance-grown leaves illuminated at growth irradiance avoided an inbalance between the light reactions and Rubisco; this was shown by the low value of C infRubisco supA (see above) and by measurements showing that non-photochemical quenching was low, photochemical quenching high, and NADP-malate dehydrogenase activation was low at the growth irradiance. In contrast, when a leaf adapted to low irradiance was illuminated at a higher irradiance, Rubisco exerted more control, non-photochemical quenching was higher, photochemical quenching was lower, and NADP-malate dehydrogenase activation was higher than in a leaf which had grown at that irradiance. We conclude that changes in leaf composition allow the leaf to avoid a one-sided limitation by Rubisco and, hence, overexcitation and overreduction of the thylakoids in high-irradiance growth conditions, (v) Antisense plants with less Rubisco contained a higher content of insoluble (thylakoid) protein and chlorophyll, compared to total protein or structural leaf dry weight. They also showed a higher rate of photosynthesis than the wild type, when measured at an irradiance below that at which the plant had grown. We propose that N-allocation in low light is not optimal in tobacco and that genetic manipulation to decrease Rubisco may, in some circumstances, increase photosynthetic performance in low light.Abbreviations A rate of photosynthesis - C infRubisco supA flux control coefficient of Rubisco for photosynthesis - ci internal CO2 concentration - qE energy-dependent quenching of chlorophyll fluorescense - qQ photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence - NADP-MDH NADP-dependent malate dehydrogenase - Rubisco ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (SFB 137).  相似文献

In the bark of Populus tremula L. photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) determined as Fv/Fm decreased during winter. The strongest reduction was found after cold periods. The degree of reduction depended on irradiance since the lowest levels of Fv/Fm were found on the sun-exposed side of the stem and below thin phellem. Therefore, photoinhibition was partly responsible for the reduction in Fv/Fm. The photochemical efficiency of PS2 recovered in late April about a month before the trees got leaves. In the laboratory, Fv/Fm recovered within about a week under low irradiance at 20 °C. Rapid recovery of photochemical efficiency of PS2 in the bark may be important to reduce respiratory loss of CO2 from the stem before the trees get leaves.  相似文献

Diurnal heliotropic leaf movements, photosynthetic gas exchange, and the ratio of variable fluorescence to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) of unrestrained and horizontally restrained leaves from soybean (Glycine max cv. Cumberland) plants grown in two different water and two different nitrogen treatments were measured. Leaves of plants grown in low water or low nitrogen availability treatments displayed more pronounced diaheliotropism (solar tracking) in the afternoon and a longer period of paraheliotropism (light avoiding) at midday relative to those of well-watered, high-nitrogen-grown plants. Photosaturated photosynthetic rates and the photon flux required to saturate photosynthesis were reduced by water stress and nitrogen deficiency. Compared to horizontal leaves, irradiance on orienting leaves was nearer to the breakpoint of the photosynthetic light response curve, where photosynthesis is co-limited by ribulose biphosphate regeneration and carboxylation. This would increase the carbon return on investments of nitrogen into photosynthesis. A positive linear relationship between Fv/Fm and quantum yield of photosynthesis was measured. Leaves of low-nitrogen-grown plants had earlier and more prolonged reductions in Fv/Fm at midday compared to leaves of high nitrogen grown plants of the same water treatment. Within the same water and nitrogen treatment, horizontally restrained leaves had lower midday Fv/Fm in relation to orienting leaves. Nitrogen deficiency and water stress enhanced this difference such that horizontally restrained leaves of low water and low nitrogen grown plants had earlier and longer midday depressions in Fv/Fm.  相似文献

Leaf anatomy and the stomatal development of developing leaves of plants have been shown to be regulated by the same light environment as that of mature leaves, but no report has yet been written on whether such a long-distance signal from mature leaves regulates the total leaf area of newly emerged leaves. To explore this question, we created an investigation in which we collected data on the leaf area, leaf mass per area (LMA), leaf anatomy, cell size, cell number, gas exchange and soluble sugar content of leaves from three soybean varieties grown under full sunlight (NS), shaded mature leaves (MS) or whole plants grown in shade (WS). Our results show that MS or WS cause a marked decline both in leaf area and LMA in newly developing leaves. Leaf anatomy also showed characteristics of shade leaves with decreased leaf thickness, palisade tissue thickness, sponge tissue thickness, cell size and cell numbers. In addition, in the MS and WS treatments, newly developed leaves exhibited lower net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (E), but higher carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentration in the intercellular space (Ci) than plants grown in full sunlight. Moreover, soluble sugar content was significantly decreased in newly developed leaves in MS and WS treatments. These results clearly indicate that (1) leaf area, leaf anatomical structure, and photosynthetic function of newly developing leaves are regulated by a systemic irradiance signal from mature leaves; (2) decreased cell size and cell number are the major cause of smaller and thinner leaves in shade; and (3) sugars could possibly act as candidate signal substances to regulate leaf area systemically.  相似文献

In two hybrids of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench.), C51 and C42, high nitrogen concentration (HN) increased net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) of well watered (HW) plants. Water stressing (LW plants) resulted in low PN, gs, and E in both hybrids, but the values were still higher in HN plants as compared to low nitrogen-grown (LN) plants. Intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) increased in droughted plants. This increase was much higher in LN plants as compared to HN plants. Instantaneous water use efficiency was lower in LN plants as a consequence of a greater effect of water stress on photosynthesis. Leaf water potential was reduced by water stress in all treatments. Analysis of chlorophyll a fluorescence at room temperature showed that photosystem 2 (PS2) was rather tolerant to the water stress imposed. Water stress caused a slight decrease in the efficiency of excitation capture by open PS2 reaction centres (Fv/Fm). The in vivo quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry (PS2) and the photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) were slightly reduced, while the nonphotochemical quenching coefficient (qN) was increased under the water stress. However, in hybrid C42 these characters were little or not affected by the water stress.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The mechanisms involving light control of vitamin C content in fruits are not yet fully understood. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of fruit and leaf shading on ascorbate (AsA) accumulation in tomato fruit and to determine how fruit sugar content (as an AsA precursor) affected AsA content.

Methods

Cherry tomato plants were grown in a glasshouse. The control treatment (normally irradiated fruits and irradiated leaves) was compared with the whole-plant shading treatment and with leaf or fruit shading treatments in fruits harvested at breaker stage. In a second experiment, the correlation between sugars and AsA was studied during ripening.

Key Results

Fruit shading was the most effective treatment in reducing fruit AsA content. Under normal conditions, AsA and sugar content were correlated and increased with the ripening stage. Reducing fruit irradiance strongly decreased the reduced AsA content (−74 %), without affecting sugars, so that sugar and reduced AsA were no longer correlated. Leaf shading delayed fruit ripening: it increased the accumulation of oxidized AsA in green fruits (+98 %), whereas it decreased the reduced AsA content in orange fruits (−19 %), suggesting that fruit AsA metabolism also depends on leaf irradiance.

Conclusions

Under fruit shading only, the absence of a correlation between sugars and reduced AsA content indicated that fruit AsA content was not limited by leaf photosynthesis or sugar substrate, but strongly depended on fruit irradiance. Leaf shading most probably affected fruit AsA content by delaying fruit ripening, and suggested a complex regulation of AsA metabolism which depends on both fruit and leaf irradiance and fruit ripening stage.Key words: Ascorbate, fruit quality, irradiance, shading, Solanum lycopersicon, sugars, tomato, vitamin C  相似文献

The inhibition of photosynthesis after supplying glucose to detached leaves of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) was used as a model system to search for mechanisms which potentially contribute to the sink regulation of photosynthesis. Detached leaves were supplied with 50 mM glucose or water for 7 d through the transpiration stream, holding the leaves in low irradiance (16 mol photons · m–2 · s–1) and a cycle of 9 h light/15 h darkness to prevent any endogenous accumulation of carbohydrate. Leaves supplied with water only showed marginal changes of photosynthesis, respiration, enzyme levels or metabolites. When leaves were supplied with 50 mM glucose, photosynthesis was gradually inhibited over several days. The inhibition was most marked when photosynthesis was measured in saturating irradiance and ambient CO2, less marked in saturating irradiance and saturating CO2, and least marked in limiting irradiance. There was a gradual loss of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) protein, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, NADP-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and chlorophyll. The inhibition of photosynthesis was accompanied by a large decrease of glycerate-3-phosphate, an increase of triose-phosphates and fructose-1,6-bisphospate, and a small decrease of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate. The stromal NADPH/NADP ratio increased (as indicated by increased activation of NADP-malate dehydrogenase), and the ATP/ADP ratio increased. Chlorophyll-fluorescence analysis indicated that thylakoid energisation was increased, and that the acceptor side of photosystem II was more reduced. Similar results were obtained when glucose was supplied by floating leaf discs in low irradiance on glucose solution, and when detached spinach leaves were held in high light to produce an endogenous accumulation of carbohydrate. Feeding glucose also led to an increased rate of respiration. This was not accompanied by any changes of pyruvate kinase, phosphofructokinase, or pyrophosphate: fructose-6-phosphate phosphotransferase activity. There was a decrease of phosphoenolpyruvate, glycerate-3-phosphate and glycerate-2-phosphate, an increase of pyruvate and triose-phosphates, and an increased ATP/ADP ratio. These results show (i) that accumulation of carbohydrate can inhibit photosynthesis via a long-term mechanism involving a decrease of Rubisco and other Calvin-cycle enzymes and (ii) that respiration is stimulated due to an unknown mechanism, which increases the utilisation of phosphoenolpyruvate.Abbreviations and Symbols Ci CO2 concentration in the air space within the leaf - Fm fluorescence yield with a saturating pulse in dark-adapted material - Fo ground level of fluorescence using a weak non-actinic modulated beam in the dark - Fru1,6bisP fructose-1,6-bisphosphate - Fru1,6Pase fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase - Fru2,6bisP fructose-2,6-bisphosphate - IRGA infrared gas analyser - NAD-MDH NAD-dependent malate dehydrogenase - NADP-MDH NADP-dependent malate dehydrogenase - NADP-GAPDH NADP-dependent glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase - PEP phosphoenolpyruvate - PFK phospho-fructokinase - PFP pyrophospate: fructose-6-phosphate-phosphotransferase - 3-PGA glycerate-3-phospate - Pi inorganic phosphate - Ru1,5bisP ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate - Rubisco ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase - triose-phosphates sum of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate This research was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (SFB 137).  相似文献

In maize (Zea mays L., cv Contessa), nitrogen (NO3) limitation resulted in a reduction in shoot growth and photosynthetic capacity and in an increase in the leaf zeaxanthin contents. Nitrogen deficiency had only a small effect on the quantum yield of CO2 assimilation but a large effect on the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis. Linear relationships persisted between the quantum yield of CO2 assimilation and that of photosystem II photochemistry in all circumstances. At high irradiances, large differences in photochemical quenching and nonphotochemical quenching of Chl a fluorescence as well as the ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence (Fv/Fm) were apparent between nitrogen-deficient plants and nitrogen-replete controls, whereas at low irradiances these parameters were comparable in all plants. Light intensity-dependent increases in nonphotochemical quenching were greatest in nitrogen-deficient plants as were the decreases in Fv/Fm ratio. In nitrogen-deficient plants, photochemical quenching decreased with increasing irradiance but remained higher than in controls at high irradiances. Thermal dissipative processes were enhanced as a result of nitrogen deficiency (nonphotochemical quenching was elevated and Fv/Fm was lowered) allowing PSII to remain relatively oxidised even when carbon metabolism was limited via nitrogen limitation.  相似文献

We have examined tobacco transformed with an antisense construct against the Rieske-FeS subunit of the cytochromeb 6 f complex, containing only 15 to 20% of the wild-type level of cytochrome f. The anti-Rieske-FeS leaves had a comparable chlorophyll and Photosystem II reaction center stoichiometry and a comparable carotenoid profile to the wild-type, with differences of less than 10% on a leaf area basis. When exposed to high irradiance, the anti-Rieske-FeS leaves showed a greatly increased closure of Photosystem II and a much reduced capacity to develop non-photochemical quenching compared with wild-type. However, contrary to our expectations, the anti-Rieske-FeS leaves were not more susceptible to photoinhibition than were wild-type leaves. Further, when we regulated the irradiance so that the excitation pressure on photosystem II was equivalent in both the anti-Rieske-FeS and wild-type leaves, the anti-Rieske-FeS leaves experienced much less photoinhibition than wild-type. The evidence from the anti-Rieske-FeS tobacco suggests that rapid photoinactivation of Photosystem II in vivo only occurs when closure of Photosystem II coincides with lumen acidification. These results suggest that the model of photoinhibition in vivo occurring principally because of limitations to electron withdrawal from photosystem II does not explain photoinhibition in these transgenic tobacco leaves, and we need to re-evaluate the twinned concepts of photoinhibition and photoprotection.Abbreviations Chl chlorophyll - DCMU 3-(3,4-dichlophenyl)-1,-dimethylurea - Fo and Fo minimal fluorescence when all PS II reaction centers are open in dark- and light-acclimated leaves, respectively - Fm and Fm maximal fluorescence when all PS II reaction centers are closed in dark- and light-acclimated leaves, respectively - Fv variable fluorescence (Fm-Fo) in dark acclimated leaves - Fv variable fluorescence (Fm-Fo) in lightacclimated leaves - NPQ non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence - PS I and PS II Photosystem I and II - P680 primary electron donor of the reaction center of PS II - PFD photosynthetic flux density - QA primary acceptor quinone of PS II - qp photochemical quenching of fluorescence - V+A+Z violaxanthin+antheraxanthin+zeaxanthin  相似文献

In order to determine whether stomatal closure alone regulates photosynthesis during drought under natural conditions, seasonal changes in leaf gas exchange were studied in plants of five species differing in life form and carbon fixation pathway growing in a thorn scrub in Venezuela. The species were: Ipomoea carnea, Jatropha gossypifolia, (C3 deciduous shrubs), Alternanthera crucis (C4 deciduous herb), and Prosopis juliflora and Capparis odoratissima (evergreen phreatophytic trees). Xylem water potential () of all species followed very roughly the precipitation pattern, being more closely governed by soil water content in I. carnea and A. crucis. Maximum rate of photosynthesis, Pmax, decreased with in I. carnea, J. gossypifolia, and A. crucis. In I. carnea and J. gossypifolia stomatal closure was responsible for a 90 % decline in net photosynthetic rate (PN) as decreased from -0.3 to -2.0 MPa, since stomatal conductance (gs) was sensitive to water stress, and stomatal limitation on PN increased with drought. In A. crucis, PN decreased by 90 % at a much lower (-9.3 MPa), and gs was relatively less sensitive to . In P. juliflora and C. odoratissima, Pmax, gs, and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) were independent of soil water content. In the C3 shrubs stomatal closure was apparently the main constraint on photosynthesis during drought, Ci declining with in I. carnea. In the C4 herb, Ci was constant along the range of values, which suggested a coordinated decrease in both gs and mesophyll capacity. In P. juliflora Ci showed a slow decrease with which may have been due to seasonal leaf developmental changes, rather than to soil water availability.  相似文献

High irradiance and relatively low temperature, which characterize Mediterranean winters, cause chilling stress in plants. Downregulation of photosynthetic efficiency is a mechanism that allows plants to survive these conditions. This study aims to address whether this process shows a regular spatial pattern across leaf surface or not. Three species (Buxus sempervirens, Cistus albidus and Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) with contrasting responses to winter stress were studied. During 7 days, macro and micro Fv/Fm spatial patterns were monitored by the use of chlorophyll fluorescence imaging techniques. In the field, the strongest photoinhibition was found in B. sempervirens, while there was almost no chronic photoinhibition in C. albidus. In leaves of the first species, Fv/Fm decreased from base to tip while in C. albidus it was uniform over the leaf lamina. An intermediate behavior is shown by A. uva-ursi leaves. Spatial heterogeneity distribution of Fv/Fm was found inside the leaves, resulting in greater Fv/Fm values in the inner layers than in the outer ones. Neither xanthophyll-linked downregulation of Fv/Fm nor protein remobilization were the reasons for such spatial patterns since pigment composition and nitrogen content did not reveal tip-base differences. During recovery from winter, photoinhibition changes occurred in Fv/Fm, pigments and chloroplast ultrastructure. This work shows for the first time that irrespective of physiological mechanisms responsible for development of winter photoinhibition, there is an acclimation response with strong spatio-temporal variability at leaf level in some species. This observation should be taken into account when modeling or scaling up photosynthetic responses.
