- 1.1. Treatment of isolated rat liver mitochondria with methyl methacrylate (MM) produced membrane disruption as evidenced by the release of citrate synthase, and changes in the ultrastructure of mitochondria.
- 2.2. At concentration 0.1%, MM uncoupled oxidative phosphorylation as evidenced by stimulation of state 4 respiration supported either by pyruvate plus malate or succinate (+rotenone) and ATP-ase activity in intact mitochondria.
- 3.3. At concentration 1% MM stimulated ATP-ase activity in intact mitochondria and succinate (+rotenone) oxidation at state 4 and was without effect on this substrate oxidation at state 3.
- 4.4. MM inhibited pyruvate plus malate oxidation either at state 3 or in the presence of uncoupling agents.
- 5.5. MM inhibited the NADH oxidase of electron transport particles at a concentration which failed to inhibit either succinic oxidase or the NADH-ferricyanide reductase activity.
- 6.6. The data presented suggest that in the isolated mitochondria MM inhibits NADH oxidation in the vicinity of the rotenone sensitive site of complex I.
- 7.7. The general conclusion is that MM may block an electron transport and to uncouple oxidative phosphorylation in rat liver mitochondria. The overall in vitro effect would be to prevent ATP synthesis which could result in cell death under in vivo conditions.

- 1.1. This article reviews the physiology of oniscidean isopods, a group of terrestrial crustaceans known commonly as woodlice or sowbugs.
- 2.2. The oniscideans are represented by several hundred species in 34 families and occupy habitats ranging from sea beach to woodland, grassland and desert.
- 3.3. The widespread interest in woodlice stems, in part, from their evolutionary transition from marine to terrestrial habit directly over sea beaches. Representative stages of this evolutionary transition are extant within the oniscidean group.
- 4.4. Water and water relations have featured prominently in the accession to land by woodlice; consequently, these topics have been the focus of much historical and recent research work. The present review builds on a strong foundation of behavioural research on water relations and explores the evolutionary success of these unique crustaceans from a physiological point of view, emphasizing recently published work.
- 5.5. Topics include gas exchange and effects on VO2, marsupial adaptations, water-vapour absorption, ammonia excretion, moulting and its neuroendocrine control, nutrition and osmotic regulation

- 1.1. The dietary and inter-organ cholesterol transport in the hemolymph of the bivalve mollusc Diplodon delodontus, was studied. Plasma and hemocytes were obtained after feeding labeled cholesterol to animals or injecting it into the posterior adductor muscle.
- 2.2. In both cases, cholesterol was incorporated either into plasma or hematic cells.
- 3.3. Two plasmatic fractions differing in their hydrated densities were recognized as cholesterol carriers and were isolated. They have characteristics of high density (HDL) and very high density (VHDL) lipoproteins, respectively.
- 4.4. The major lipids in the different classes of lipoproteins were free sterols in HDL and phospholipids in VHDL.
- 5.5. Neither low nor very low density lipoprotein transporting cholesterol was detected.

- 1.1. Fifteen values were determined in blood samples from six buzzards (Buteo buteo) and six eagle owls (Bubo bubo) over the 24 hr of the day.
- 2.2. Glucose, urea, uric acid, triglyceride and calcium values showed diurnal rhythms in both species. Their respective patterns of diurnal variation were compared.
- 3.3. Phosphorus, cholesterol and cholinesterase levels underwent circadian rhythms only in the buzzards. Albumin/globulin and amylase exhibited diurnal variations exclusively in the eagle owls.
- 4.4. Glutamatic oxaloacetic transaminase, albumin, globulin, total protein and creatinine concentrations did not show diurnal rhythms in either of the species.
- 5.5. Blood values of the different parameters were studied on the basis of the ranges described in birds.

- 1.1. The palmitic acid fate as substrate for the synthesis of either glycerides or other fatty acids was studied in vivo and in the microsomal fraction from hepatopancreas of Macrobrachium borellii.
- 2.2. Most of the palmitic acid administered in vivo circulated to the hepatopancreas, being incorporated mainly in the triacylglycerol (TG) fraction.
- 3.3. Palmitic acid transformations into palmitoleic, stearic and oleic acids were observed in the hepatopancreas.
- 4.4. The in vitro biosynthesis of TG in hepatopancreas was more active than in other tissues. In the microsomal fraction, palmitic acid was also incorporated mainly in TG, and followed the α-glycerophosphate pathway.

- 1.Establishing if and how organisms modulate temperature changes is an important component of understanding their thermal biology.
- 2.We used temperature-sensitive radio-transmitters to monitor heating and cooling rates between 5 and 35 °C of four Crotalus adamanteus in the laboratory.
- 3.We found no difference between heating and cooling rates in C. adamanteus. Additionally, rates of temperature change mirrored those of a biophysical model, further suggesting a lack of physiological thermoregulation.
- 4.Our findings contrast previously published studies that demonstrate active temperature control of similarly sized reptiles and demonstrate a need for more investigations of physiological thermoregulation in reptiles.

- 1.1. The capacity of five anuran Amphibians (Bufo viridis B. regularis, Rana ridibunda, Hyla arborea and Pelobates syriacus) to acclimate to NaCl and urea solutions was investigated.
- 2.2. All species could be acclimated to relatively high concentrations of urea solutions, while only Bufo viridis and Hyla arborea could be acclimated to 500 mOsm/kg or higher NaCl solutions.
- 3.3. The plasma urea concentration in B. viridis and H. arborea was elevated to levels over 140 mmol/1.
- 4.4. The sum of plasma sodium and chloride concentrations did not increase over 400 mmol/l in any species.
- 5.5. Urine osmolality, which was normally low, increased, but never exceeded the plasma osmolality.
- 6.6. In the urea acclimation conditions, urine electrolytes diminished, similarly in all species in this study.
- 7.7. It is concluded that anuran Amphibians can tolerate high plasma urea concentrations, but only those species which can elevate it, either through retention or net synthesis, can be acclimated to high salt solutions.

- 1.1. In brush border membrane vesicles isolated from eel kidneys, adapted either to sea water or freshwater environments, a Na+/H+ antiporter is present.
- 2.2. Using a calibration plot it is possible to evaluate the amount of protons that this antiporter can accumulate inside the vesicular space.
- 3.3. The activity of the antiporter seems to be affected by the salinity of the water; it is higher in animals adapted to seawater.
- 4.4. This adaptation seems to occur by a Jmax regulation of the antiporter.

- 1.1. Particulate guanylate cyclase and receptors for E. coli heat-stable enterotoxin were solubilized from the rat intestinal cytoskeletal compartment using Lubrol-PX and KC1.
- 2.2. Thirty to forty percent of the ST receptor and guanylate cyclase activities were extracted from the lipid layer with Lubrol-PX alone.
- 3.2. Seventy percent of the remaining activities were solubilized from the cytoskeleton with Lubrol-PX and KCl.
- 4.3. Guanylate cyclase solubilized from either compartment exhibited similar reaction kinetics.
- 5.4. Both high- and low-affinity classes of ST receptors were solubilized from the lipid and cytoskeleton compartments.
- 6.5. In the presence of ATPγS, ST selectively activated the guanylate cyclase solubilized from the cytoskeleton compared to that solubilized from the lipid bilayer.
- 7.6. Crosslinking experiments demonstrated a preferential solubilization of the 130 kDa receptor subunit from the cytoskeleton and the 56 kDa subunit from the lipid bilayer.
- 8.7. Development of a procedure to solubilize ST receptors and guanylate cyclase from the intestinal membrane cytoskeleton will permit purification and further detailed studies of the coupling of these activities.

- 1.1. The three sets of giant fibres in the nerve cord of Nereis virens are connected by both electrotonic and chemically transmitting junctions.
- 2.2. The paired laterals and paramedials are connected to their partners by electronic junctions. The laterals are also electrically coupled to the median giant fibre.
- 3.3. The laterals are connected to the paramedials by an excitatory chemical synapse, while in the anterior segments the paramedials provide an inhibitory input to the median giant fibre.
- 4.4. Afferent input to the giant fibres through the segmental nerves two and four is excitatory, except that to the median fibre in the caudal segments.
- 5.5. There is no evidence of the segmental origin of the lateral giant fibres, either in the form of macrosynapses or segmental cell bodies.
- 6.6. The median giant fibre originates from two groups of cell bodies in the sub-oesophageal ganglia.

- 1.1. Seven chlorinated anilines and one chlorinated benzene were tested for their ability to bioconcentrate in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) under different experimental conditions.
- 2.2. Interactions between compounds in a mixture influence the bioconcentration of some chlorinated anilines. These interactions result in either an increase or a decrease of bioconcentration, depending on the compound studied.
- 3.3. Exposure concentration can have an effect on the extent of bioconcentration of some chlorinated anilines.

- 1.1. The phenoloxidase activity, protein and carbohydrate levels were studied for 24 hr in the hemolymph of the migratory grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes after artificial wounding of the insect cuticle or the injection of Beauveria bassiana conidia.
- 2.2. Injection or wounding induced a primary response and phenoloxidase activity was found to increase within 10–60 min. The values for phenoloxidase activity in viable B. bassiana-injected insects exhibited a secondary response, i.e., an increase 24 hr after injection.
- 3.3. In wounded insects and those injected with inactivated conidia, the phenoloxidase activity receded after the initial increase and remained at low levels.
- 4.4. Protein concentrations in the hemolymph increased immediately after infection and wounding and returned to basal levels during the course of the experiment.
- 5.5. Injection of viable B. bassiana resulted in a gradual increase in the protein concentrations between 12 and 24 hr.
- 6.6. There was no apparent change in the carbohydrate levels in either B. bassiana-infected or wounded insects.
- 7.7. These results are discussed in relation to their possible role(s) and interrelationships in the immune response to infection or wounding. Furthermore, we suggest that a “factor” is released after mechanical injury of the integument.
