The early positive cortical evoked potential to somatosensory stimuli is regularly increased in amplitude in patients receiving lithium carbonate treatment. This may reflect a unique neurochemical effect of lithium since similar changes have not been observed in humans following other drugs. To investigate this finding, cortical evoked potentials to peripheral somatosensory stimulation were obtained in rats and cats with implanted epidural electrodes. In rats, increasing doses of oral lithium chloride, up to 5 meq/kg/d which approached the LD 50, produced no reliable change in the early positive evoked response amplitude. In cats, an increased amplitude of the early positive-negative cortical potential was observed in every instance and the serum lithium levels were within the range used clinically in humans. The increased cortical evoked response amplitude in cats did not directly correlate with serum lithium levels but was delayed 1 to 5 days after serum lithium levels reached their peak. The findings in cats are similar to the human studies. The negative results observed in rats may reflect important species differences regarding lithium.  相似文献

Identical facilitation of the primary response to peripheral stimuli in rats and monkeys has been induced by local superficial cooling of the cortex in the somatosensory area S1. Higher facilitation of the evoked potentials was observed in the neostriatum of rats. Correlation of the evoked potentials with primary responses was more significant with respect to temporal than amplitude parameters. In monkeys, "cool" facilitation of the cortical primary response did not result in facilitation of the evoked potential in the neostriatum. Temporal correlation between the primary response and the evoked potential was less significant, whereas correlation in the amplitude was absent. The data obtained indicate the existence of differences in functional organization of corticofugal influences upon the neostriatum in rodents and primates.  相似文献

Some childhood learning disabilities are associated with altered synchrony patterns of brain evoked potentials. Scalp recorded electrical synchrony between selected brain regions was measured in response to visual, auditory and somatosensory stimuli and compared between a group of learning disabled children and a group of normal children. Statistically significant inter-group differences revealed stimulus dependent greater inter-regional EP synchrony in the learning disabled group. These findings support the notion that some childhood learning disabilities reflect, in part, altered connections between selected brain regions.  相似文献

Key to understanding perception is the form of how sensory stimuli are represented in the evoked activity of the brain. Here, we addressed the question of which components of the evoked neuronal activity in the somatosensory cortex represent the stimulus features while trained monkeys discriminated the difference in frequency between two vibrotactile stimuli. We probed whether these cortical neuronal representations are essential to perception. The results show a strong link between the cortical representation of the stimulus and perception.  相似文献

The present study has investigated interaction at the cortical level in the human between two major components of flavor perception, pure chemical gustatory and lingual somatosensory perception. Twelve subjects participated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging study and tasted six stimuli, applied on the whole tongue, among which four were pure gustatory stimuli (NaCl, aspartame, quinine and HCl, pH 2.4 or 2.2) and two were both taste and lingual somatosensory stimuli, i.e. somato-gustatory stimuli (HCl, pH 1.6 or 1.5, and aluminum potassium sulfate). Functional images were acquired with an echo planar sequence on a 3 T system and were individually processed by correlation with the temporal perception profile. Both sets of stimuli showed activation in the same cortical areas, namely the insula, the rolandic operculum (base of the pre- and post-central gyri), the frontal operculum and the temporal operculum, confirming a wide overlap of taste and lingual somatosensory representations. However, the relative activation across areas and the analysis of co-activated areas across all runs for each set of stimuli allowed discrimination of taste and somatosensory modalities. Factor analysis of correspondences indicated different patterns of activation across the sub-insular and opercular regions, depending on the gustatory or somato-gustatory nature of the stimuli. For gustatory stimuli different activation patterns for the superior and inferior parts of the insula suggested a difference in function between these two insular sub-regions. Furthermore, the left inferior insula was co-activated with the left angular gyrus, a structure involved in semantic processing. In contrast, only somato-gustatory stimuli specifically produced a simultaneous and symmetrical activation of both the left and right rolandic opercula, which include a part of the sensory homunculus dedicated to the tactile representation of oral structures.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate augmented pain processing in the cortical somatosensory system in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). Cortical evoked responses were recorded in FM (n = 19) and healthy subjects (n = 21) using magnetoencephalography after noxious intra-epidermal electrical stimulation (IES) of the hand dorsum (pain rating 6 on a numeric rating scale, perceptually-equivalent). In addition, healthy subjects were stimulated using the amplitude corresponding to the average stimulus intensity rated 6 in patients with FM (intensity-equivalent). Quantitative sensory testing was performed on the hand dorsum or thenar muscle (neutral site) and over the trapezius muscle (tender point), using IES (thresholds, ratings, temporal summation of pain, stimulus-response curve) and mechanical stimuli (threshold, ratings). Increased amplitude of cortical responses was found in patients with FM as compared to healthy subjects. These included the contralateral primary (S1) and bilateral secondary somatosensory cortices (S2) in response to intensity-equivalent stimuli and the contralateral S1 and S2 in response to perceptually-equivalent stimuli. The amplitude of the contralateral S2 response in patients with FM was positively correlated with average pain intensity over the last week. Quantitative sensory testing results showed that patients with FM were more sensitive to painful IES as well as to mechanical stimulation, regardless of whether the stimulation site was the hand or the trapezius muscle. Interestingly, the slope of the stimulus-response relationship as well as temporal summation of pain in response to IES was not different between groups. Together, these results suggest that the observed pain augmentation in response to IES in patients with FM could be due to sensitization or disinhibition of the cortical somatosensory system. Since the S2 has been shown to play a role in higher-order functions, further studies are needed to clarify the role of augmented S2 response in clinical characteristics of FM.  相似文献

A 53-year old woman with tic doloureaux, affecting her right maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve (V2), could elicit shooting pains by slightly tapping her teeth when off medication. The pains, which she normally rated as > 6/10 on a visual analog scale (VAS), were electric shock-like in nature. She had no other spontaneous or ongoing background pain affecting the region. Based on her ability to elicit these tics, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed while she produced brief shocks every 2 minutes on cue (evoked pain) over a 20 min period. In addition, she had 1–2 spontaneous shocks manifested between these evoked pains over the course of functional image acquisition. Increased fMRI activation for both evoked and spontaneous tics was observed throughout cortical and subcortical structures commonly observed in experimental pain studies with healthy subjects; including the primary somatosensory cortex, insula, anterior cingulate, and thalamus. Spontaneous tics produced more decrease in signals in a number of regions including the posterior cingulate cortex and amygdala, suggesting that regions known to be involved in expectation/anticipation may have been activated for the evoked, but not spontaneous, tics. In this patient there were large increases in activation observed in the frontal regions, including the anterior cingulate cortex and the basal ganglia. Spontaneous tics showed increased activation in classic aversion circuitry that may contribute to increased levels of anxiety. We believe that this is the first report of functional imaging of brain changes in tic-doloureaux.  相似文献

We employed voltage-sensitive dye (VSD) imaging to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of the responses of the supragranular somatosensory cortex to stimulation of the four paws in urethane-anesthetized rats. We obtained the following main results. (1) Stimulation of the contralateral forepaw evoked VSD responses with greater amplitude and smaller latency than stimulation of the contralateral hindpaw, and ipsilateral VSD responses had a lower amplitude and greater latency than contralateral responses. (2) While the contralateral stimulation initially activated only one focus, the ipsilateral stimulation initially activated two foci: one focus was typically medial to the focus activated by contralateral stimulation and was stereotaxically localized in the motor cortex; the other focus was typically posterior to the focus activated by contralateral stimulation and was stereotaxically localized in the somatosensory cortex. (3) Forepaw and hindpaw somatosensory stimuli activated large areas of the sensorimotor cortex, well beyond the forepaw and hindpaw somatosensory areas of classical somatotopic maps, and forepaw stimuli activated larger cortical areas with greater activation velocity than hindpaw stimuli. (4) Stimulation of the forepaw and hindpaw evoked different cortical activation dynamics: forepaw responses displayed a clear medial directionality, whereas hindpaw responses were much more uniform in all directions. In conclusion, this work offers a complete spatio-temporal map of the supragranular VSD cortical activation in response to stimulation of the paws, showing important somatotopic differences between contralateral and ipsilateral maps as well as differences in the spatio-temporal activation dynamics in response to forepaw and hindpaw stimuli.  相似文献

Somatosensory, brainstem auditory evoked and peripheral sensory-motor responses were recorded in rats anaesthetized with either pentobarbital or a ketamine-xylazine combination. This was carried out in order to assess which of these agents degraded responses to a lesser extent and thus would be more suitable for monitoring experimental effects. Neither of the anaesthetic agents affected peripheral sensory or motor conduction, nor were there any interpeak latency changes of the early components of the brainstem auditory response. However, pentobarbital anaesthesia resulted in an increase in latency of the initial positive component of the somatosensory cortical evoked potential and attenuation of the following negative component. During the recovery stages of ketamine-xylazine anaesthesia the longer latency evoked potential components were observed to emerge.  相似文献

In the premature infant, somatosensory and visual stimuli trigger an immature electroencephalographic (EEG) pattern, “delta-brushes,” in the corresponding sensory cortical areas. Whether auditory stimuli evoke delta-brushes in the premature auditory cortex has not been reported. Here, responses to auditory stimuli were studied in 46 premature infants without neurologic risk aged 31 to 38 postmenstrual weeks (PMW) during routine EEG recording. Stimuli consisted of either low-volume technogenic “clicks” near the background noise level of the neonatal care unit, or a human voice at conversational sound level. Stimuli were administrated pseudo-randomly during quiet and active sleep. In another protocol, the cortical response to a composite stimulus (“click” and voice) was manually triggered during EEG hypoactive periods of quiet sleep. Cortical responses were analyzed by event detection, power frequency analysis and stimulus locked averaging. Before 34 PMW, both voice and “click” stimuli evoked cortical responses with similar frequency-power topographic characteristics, namely a temporal negative slow-wave and rapid oscillations similar to spontaneous delta-brushes. Responses to composite stimuli also showed a maximal frequency-power increase in temporal areas before 35 PMW. From 34 PMW the topography of responses in quiet sleep was different for “click” and voice stimuli: responses to “clicks” became diffuse but responses to voice remained limited to temporal areas. After the age of 35 PMW auditory evoked delta-brushes progressively disappeared and were replaced by a low amplitude response in the same location. Our data show that auditory stimuli mimicking ambient sounds efficiently evoke delta-brushes in temporal areas in the premature infant before 35 PMW. Along with findings in other sensory modalities (visual and somatosensory), these findings suggest that sensory driven delta-brushes represent a ubiquitous feature of the human sensory cortex during fetal stages and provide a potential test of functional cortical maturation during fetal development.

Respiratory-related evoked potentials (RREP) elicited by inspiratory mechanical loads have been recorded in humans. Early RREP peaks were hypothesized to be generated by activation of neurons in the somatosensory cortex. An animal model was developed to test this hypothesis in chronically instrumented, awake, spontaneously breathing lambs. Electrocorticogram (ECoG) was recorded bilaterally with ball electrodes on the dural surface over the somatosensory region. Inspiratory occlusions were presented through a face mask or endotracheal tube as interruptions of inspiration. Occlusion-elicited evoked potentials were obtained by computer-signal averaging the ECoG activity. A short-latency positive peak was observed bilaterally in the averaged occlusion-elicited evoked potentials in all animals breathing with the facemask and 5 of 8 lambs with the endotracheal tube. Postmortem identification of the electrode location demonstrated that the ECoG was recorded in the caudal-lateral portion of the somatosensory cortex. These results demonstrate that inspiratory occlusion elicits an evoked potential in the somatosensory cortical region of awake, spontaneously breathing lambs. The lamb cortical RREP is similar to human RREP.  相似文献

In the somatosensory domain it is still unclear at which processing stage information reaches the opposite hemispheres. Due to dense transcallosal connections, the secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) has been proposed to be the key candidate for interhemispheric information transfer. However, recent animal studies showed that the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) might as well account for interhemispheric information transfer. Using paired median nerve somatosensory evoked potential recordings in humans we tested the hypothesis that interhemispheric inhibitory interactions in the somatosensory system occur already in an early cortical processing stage such as S1. Conditioning right S1 by electrical median nerve (MN) stimulation of the left MN (CS) resulted in a significant reduction of the N20 response in the target (left) S1 relative to a test stimulus (TS) to the right MN alone when the interstimulus interval between CS and TS was between 20 and 25 ms. No such changes were observed for later cortical components such as the N20/P25, N30, P40 and N60 amplitude. Additionally, the subcortically generated P14 response in left S1 was also not affected. These results document the existence of interhemispheric inhibitory interactions between S1 in human subjects in the critical time interval of 20-25 ms after median nerve stimulation.  相似文献

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) participate in the processes of postnatal neovascularization and re-endothelialization in response to tissue ischemia and endothelial injury. The level of EPCs present has been found to be directly associated with the outcome of cardiovascular diseases, and could be regulated by stimulatory or inhibitory factors. Given the close relationship between angiotensin II (AngII) and the cardiovascular system, we investigated the effect of AngII on the activities of bone marrow (BM)-derived EPCs. Cells were isolated from BM of rats by density gradient centrifugation. Administration of AngII significantly promoted nitric oxide (NO) release, inhibited EPC apoptosis and enhanced EPC adhesion potential. All of these AngII-mediated effects on EPCs were attenuated by pretreatment with valsartan or L-NAME. Moreover, both LY294002 and wortmannin abolished the anti-apoptotic effect of AngII. Western blot analyses indicated that endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) protein and phosphorylated Akt increased with the treatment of AngII in EPCs. Thus, AngII improved several activities of EPCs through AngII type 1 receptor (AT1R), which may represent a possible mechanism linking AngII and AT1R with angiogenesis. Additionally, AngII-induced NO synthesis through eNOS in EPCs regulates apoptosis and adhesion, and the PI3-kinase/Akt pathway has an essential role in AngII-induced antiapoptosis signaling.  相似文献

How are local motion signals integrated to form a global motion percept? We investigate the neural mechanisms of tactile motion integration by presenting tactile gratings and plaids to the fingertips of monkeys, using the tactile analogue of a visual monitor and recording the responses evoked in somatosensory cortical neurons. The perceived directions of the gratings and plaids are measured in parallel psychophysical experiments. We identify a population of somatosensory neurons that exhibit integration properties comparable to those induced by analogous visual stimuli in area MT and find that these neural responses account for the perceived direction of the stimuli across all stimulus conditions tested. The preferred direction of the neurons and the perceived direction of the stimuli can be predicted from the weighted average of the directions of the individual stimulus features, highlighting that the somatosensory system implements a vector average mechanism to compute tactile motion direction that bears striking similarities to its visual counterpart.  相似文献

It has long been recognized that humans can perceive respiratory loads. There have been several studies on the detection and psychophysical quantification of mechanical load perception. This investigation was designed to record cortical sensory neurogenic activity related to inspiratory mechanical loading in humans. Inspiration was periodically occluded in human subjects while the electroencephalographic (EEG) activity in the somatosensory region of the cerebral cortex was recorded. The onset of inspiratory mouth pressure (Pm) was used to initiate signal averaging of the EEG signals. Cortical evoked potentials elicited by inspiratory occlusions were observed when C3 and C alpha were referenced to CZ. This evoked potential was not observed with the control (unoccluded) breaths. There was considerable subject variability in the peak latencies that was related to the differences in the inspiratory drive, as measured by occlusion pressure (P0.1). The results of this study demonstrate that neurogenic activity can be recorded in the somatosensory region of the cortex that is related to inspiratory occlusions. The peak latencies are longer than analogous somatosensory evoked potentials elicited by stimulation of the hand and foot. It is hypothesized that a portion of this latency difference is related to the time required for the subject to generate sufficient inspiratory force to activate the afferents mediating the cortical response.  相似文献

The neural network structure of a guinea-pig's primary auditory cortex is estimated by applying pattern-time-series analysis to the auditory evoked responses. Spatiotemporal patterns in click-evoked responses, observed by optical recording with voltage-sensitive dye, are analyzed by time series analysis using a multivariable autoregressive (MAR) model. Oscillatory neural activities with a distribution of about 10 40 Hz in the click-induced evoked responses are found in the cortical response field. The cortical regions where the distributed neural oscillations are generated are identified by pattern-time-series analysis. In addition, two types of cortico-cortical connections, unilateral and bilateral connections between the cortical points, are speculated to be the causes of oscillatory neural activity transfer. It can be said that the so-called synchronized neural oscillation, in the sense of coherency or correlation between the two evoked responses at the oscillatory frequency, does not necessarily represent real corticocortical neural connections at the evoked response points.  相似文献

The refractory effect of one stimulus upon the response to a closely following stimulus in a different modality is much less than upon the response to a stimulus in the same modality. It is therefore far more efficient to record responses to stimuli in different modalities concurrently than to record each one separately. We evaluated 2 techniques for concurrent recording. Interweaving involves recording the response to one stimulus in the intervals between recording responses to other stimuli. Overlapping occurs when two or more responses are at times being simulateneously recorded. Interweaving and overlapping reduced the time required to record auditory brain-stem responses, short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials and pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials by a factor of 3 over the time required to record each response separately. Overlapping caused no significant change in the evoked potentials. Depending upon the actual timing schedule, interweaving may distort the evoked potentials if later parts of the response to one stimulus override the evoked potential to a following stimulus. Filtering and randomization of stimulus timing may attenuate the effects of these overriding potentials.  相似文献

Evoked potentials to tones and clicks were recorded simultaneously from seven points of the auditory cortex and one or two points of the somatosensory cortex in unanesthetized cats. Comparison of evoked potentials to tones of equal loudness in the 250–7000 Hz band showed no common pattern of cortical tonotopic distribution. However, an individual dependence of the components of the evoked potential on pitch and on localization of the recording point exists for each animal. With a change in stimulus intensity the absolute and relative values of these components of the evoked potential vary. The initial positive waves are the most variable; besides the two waves already known a third, intermediate wave, particulary sensitive to loudness, was discovered. The negative wave of the primary response increases proportionally to loudness. Evoked potentials to clicks are more uniform over the auditory cortex and more stable than those to tones. Responses appeared in the somatosensory cortex to loud stimuli, more regularly to clicks than to tones. It is concluded that the parameter of pitch is reflected in the cat cortex as a complex spatially-individual distribution of the amplitude and time parameters of the evoked potentials.I. P.
